W

elcome to the 2017 DTRA race season. We look forward to seeing the familiar faces of our returning racers and are thrilled to meet all the new competitors, including overseas riders, who have signed up to race and joined the DTRA family. For 2017 we bring you the biggest season to date with eight events at the best track locations the UK has. Maxxis return as our title sponsor for the Maxxis 2017 UK Flat Track Championships. Alongside all of the great venues from 2016 we return to Eastbourne which was a popular event in 2015. We will also be returning to the extremely popular Greenfield Dirt Track which will host two rounds over the weekend. Round three will see racing around the Greenfield oval for the first time, while round four takes place on the technical TT track. Alongside all other events the season promises to be the best to date. Following a great introduction in 2016 Hooligan racing returns this year. We’re proud to announce the 2017 series, which is put on by the DTRA in conjunction with Sideburn magazine, will feature four events throughout the season. For series dates and full details see page 72. While the winter may have seen DTRA racing go into hibernation it hasn’t stopped many from riding whether it has been on the beach here in the UK at Mablethorpe or racing at international events. We are proud that four of the DTRA’s Pro class riders Oliver Brindley, Alan

Birtwistle, George Pickering and Toby Hales all raced at the Superprestigio indoor flat track invitational event in Barcelona on December 17 (page 44). Another international event that saw many DTRA riders take part was the second annual Snow Quake race put on by Sideburn and Deus Ex Machina. The event, which took place on January 19 at Rosa Ring, Riva Valdobbia, Alagna Valsesi in Italy, saw some top action with Giovanni Bussei winning the superfinal (page 30). Along with several DTRA members we also went along to the Vintage Racing Spirit flat track demonstration in Lyon, France February 10-12 (page 64). Now that winter is behind us it’s time to look forwards and make the 2017 DTRA flat track season better than ever. We’d like to finish by welcoming back our army of volunteers, who not only give up their time on race day, but work tirelessly behind the scenes to make each event happen. We couldn’t do it without you. Day job? Land Rover technician. Years racing? Two years riding dirt track and 14 years riding off-road motorbikes. Why did you start dirt track riding? The pressure from Anthony Brown got too much and I eventually gave in. I went for a practice at Rye House one day on his CRF450 and I was hooked. What aspect of the racing do you enjoy the most? I enjoy the social side. Whether you’re a pro or a rookie everyone chats and socialises. Nobody has anything to hide and it’s like one big family. Of course, the racing is great both to ride and to watch. Then when you come off the track everyone smiles and there are no enemies. Too many other sports can get too serious. Best result? Finishing second to Ross Herrod in my first season of racing flat track in the Restricted class. I’ve not has any real major results. I’d been consistently racing towards the front of the class and that made it happen. Making the Pro final last year at Amman in Wales was a good feeling because that track is fast and fun. Worst crash? Luckily, with flat track I’ve not had any. I like to ride safely and stay out of trouble. Some may say you’re not trying if you don’t crash but I like to think I just know my limits.

Who’s your biggest influence? In the flat track scene Oliver Brindley. For a young lad with some amazing talent he really knows his stuff and will help anybody out with knowledge if he can. To be fair any of the fast guys will chat and share the knowledge if you ask. What do you aspire to achieve in the sport? Just enjoy it and smile because I’m certainly not going to get rich racing it. I’m going to go racing, drink beer and have a good time with friends. What’s your craziest travelling experience? I’ve done a couple of trips to Spain. Once with Justin Heavens and Brad Hardman, and another with just Justin. We went down to Noyes camp the first time which was an eye opener to different styles of track. The Spanish facilities were great. We also went to another circuit at Alcarras. It’s the most awesome track at a race circuit and was ideal for a few days of practice. Pre-race ritual? Before a race I like to make sure I’ve got plenty of gloves and goggles set-up clean and ready to use. I’m a bit fussy with my goggles. Sometimes I use roll offs and sometimes I use tear offs. It all depends on how wet or dusty it is. Then I just like to chill out before a race and keep an eye on the track and the lines. What do you do outside of the sport? I like to compete in trials and motocross (both older and modern). My life pretty much revolves around riding and prepping bikes. Beer drinking mainly happens at the events the night before.

Day job? Site manager for a private school in Oxford and general fix it man. There is always a way to fix things. Sometimes you just need to think outside the box. Years racing? Going in to my fourth year at the DTRA and loving it. I’m always racing even if it’s pushing the shopping trolley around the supermarket. Why did you start dirt track racing? I had never heard of it. My cousin went to the dirt bike show and took a video of it. Then he sent it to me saying this has your name all over it. Within two weeks I booked on a course with Pete Boast and it took over. What aspect of the racing do you enjoy the most? The whole scene is great. The people are a nice bunch. I just love being on my bike and giving it my all. I don’t think I have ever been on a track where it’s so tight. I love it. Best result? It’s not about the result with me. It’s about giving my best. Don’t get me wrong it’s great to win but it’s better to have a good race and feel you had no more to give. That’s what I love. Worst crash? I’ve had a few but nothing too bad. Pain doesn’t last forever so you have to man up and get over it. Who’s you biggest influence: I don’t have anybody. I know what I like and don’t like. I will do it if I want to. I am my own man.

What do you to aspire to achieve in the sport? I just want to keep racing for as long as possible. It doesn’t matter if I am at the front or back. I just want to battle with someone. That’s what keeps me going and makes it enjoyable. What’s your craziest traveling experience? Every time I go travelling it’s an experience. I seem to get myself into situations that you just couldn’t think up. I spent Christmas and new year in Cambodia riding off road and there were some funny experiences there. Pre-race ritual? When I have a helmet with a push clip chin strap I have to make it click twice. If it doesn’t I will take it off and do it again. I also smack my helmet with my head in it. I have been known to talk and sing to myself while I ride. What do you do outside the sport? My life revolves around motorbikes. I love going trail riding and spending time with mates riding in Wales. I have just started do some off-road training days for beginners and that seems to be going well. I all so do a bit of work for the MCF for the indoor Arena Cross. That can be hard work but great fun. D

SNOW QUAKE 2017 The second annual Snow Quake event took place on January 19 at Riva Valdobbia, Alagna Valsesi in Italy. The race, put on by Sideburn and Deus Ex Machina, attracted a wealth of international racers ready to do battle with studded tyres on a challenging ice track. Many of the competitors were first time snow racers which provided seat of your pants action. The event is all about fun and as such attracted a variety of bikes from the weird and wonderful to fast tuned racers. These were split into three classes; Inappropriate - for road bikes, Racer - for flat track style bikes, and Vintage - for old bikes which were largely old enduro and motocross bikes. Alongside some funky bikes there were some great fashions on display which only added to the fun. We also loved the army blankets that were screen-printed by Deus with the event’s logo. The event delivered some top action despite the temperature falling to minus 5-degrees. At the end of the day the Superfinal saw Giovanni Bussei take the win with Marco Belli second and Jan-Willem Jansen third. ROADKILL EXHIBITION Artist and DTRA racer Ryan Quickfall recently had an exhibition of his superb artwork at Krazy Horse’s custom bike show room and cafe in Bury St. Edmunds. Quickfall’s work will probably look familiar because he’s the designer of the annual DTRA race posters and some of our clothing designs. He’s also worked for Harley Davidson, Roland Sands, Deus, Shutterstock and Barbour International to name a few of his clients, along with many magazines including Sideburn and Dice. He can also boast that Colin Edwards and Guy Martin are customers of his work. Apparently, rapper Snoop Dog has been spotted wearing one of his T-shirts. Quickfall, who has a passion for retro skate graphics, classic cars, motorcycles and vintage race posters, was showing a collection of one off original paintings alongside some of his superb and affordable prints. It was a fun evening and great to see so much of Quickfall’s work on in display in one location. MARQUEZ TAKES SUPERPRESTIGIO 2016 T The fourth annual Superprestigio invitational indoor flat track event, which took place on December 17, 2016, saw MotoGP star Marc Marquez from Spain take the win. All photos: Ian Osborne

he race, which takes place at the Palau Sant Jordi stadium in Barcelona, brings together a selection of top racers from two wheeled motorsports. The event features three classes including Superprestigio, Open and Junior that all race on the same 200-metre long oval. All have their own final along with a Superprestigio Superfinal that brings together the top four riders from the two adult classes. What’s different at this race compared to regular flat track racing is that the competitors all have to race on 17-inch wheels with Michelin wet weather road tyres. The DTRA had their best ever line up of British stars competing with Oliver Brindley, Alan Birtwistle, George Pickering and Toby Hales in the Open Class. During qualifying Brindley, who was racing here for the third time, posted the fastest time in the Open class. In the process he beat some big names including American flat track star Brad Baker. Brindley’s time was so good that he placed second overall with only Marc Marquez from the Superprestigio class riding quicker. There was some pretty close racing from the DTRA contingent throughout the qualifying rounds. Unfortunately, Hales was involved in a crash that sent him flying over the bars. This landed him with a broken wrist and ultimately ended his evening of racing. In fact, the evening was littered with crashes thanks to loose racing from some competitors. Birtwistle rode well but didn’t shine like he did at the event in 2015. After having his van broken into during the day it was no surprise. Pickering, who was crowned unofficial best dressed rider of the day, rode well narrowly missing out on the Open main. Brindley had a solid evening of racing qualifying for the Open main. He rode well but missed out on making the Superfinal. Overall the DTRA riders did us and themselves proud. In the Superprestigio event reigning MotoGP champion Marquez was on form taking the win and secured his place in the Superfinal. Alongside the crowd favourite, who had his own fan club in attendance, it was Toni Elias, Marcel Schrotter and Xavier Simeon who scored enough points to make the Superfinal. From the Open class it was Brad Baker who led the charge. He won the Superprestigio Superfinal in 2015 and there was a lot of hype surrounding his clash with Marquez. Alongside Baker from the Open class it was Tom Chereyre, Gerard Bailo and Ferran Cardus who made the Superfinal. In the Superfinal Marquez grabbed the holeshot and blasted ahead in the 16-lap race. The speedy Spaniard pulled away avoiding trouble as he delivered a text book race to take the win. Behind, Elias chased hard to take second while Baker didn’t show his usual form as he worked hard for third. We’d like to say a big thanks to all involved in the organisation of this superb event and for giving the opportunity to the DTRA riders to take part.

ollowing a successful first event in 2016 Hells Race returns for 2017. This year the Belgium crew have secured a new venue at the Lelystad Speedway in Holland and the race will take place on 6-7 May. The race, which is located just 60 kilometres east of Amsterdam, will take place on the 280-metre short track.

There’s a campsite next door to the track with a canteen to keep you fuelled with food and drinks. Doors open on Friday for camping. There’s a great overview of the track making it great for spectators to come and enjoy the fun. The race will have a Newbie class alongside the usual Rookie, AM (restricted to up to 600cc), Vintage, Thunder and Pro classes. There is provision for tents and gazebos in the pit area and you will need an environmental mat under your bike (the size of the bike not just the engine). Hells Race will also play host to round one of the of the European Hooligan Championships put on by the DTRA in conjunction with Sideburn magazine. This class is for twins above 750cc. They need to be post 1980 with a stock frame (sub frame may be modified) and must have the front brake disconnected and feature a cut out. Ideally run with dirt track tyres because no knobbly or speedway tyres are not allowed. Who is Vince Hurst? A 55-year-old lorry driver, father of two boys and possibly the fastest grandad in the DTRA. I was born into a motorcycle mad family. My grandfather raced post-war grass track on a Douglas. He was killed on his son’s BSA Gold Star long before I was even a twinkle. The son, Don Freemantle, went on to scramble (motocross) the bike with some success and was a good grass track rider. The youngest brother, Dave, learned to ride on the same bike and went on to become a well-known trials rider winning some big events. Dave, who is now in his mid 70s, usually gets along to watch at least one DTRA event per year and still has a few bikes that he rides. It was no surprise that I’ve had competition bikes since the age of 10. I have ridden trials, grass track, speedway, motocross and now flat track without ever being much good. I’ve had a ball and don’t regret any of it. I’ve never passed my road bike test though. It has never really interested me.

What’s in your wheeled collection? There is the Yamaha YZ450F that I started flat track on. This is now raced by my son, Sam Hurst #116, who goes faster on it than I ever did. Git! I currently ride a 2015 Suzuki RMZ450 that was my first ever brand new bike. I had a TL125 that was a month old when I was 14 but never a brand new one until the Suzuki. There’s also a Honda CRF100 I recently bought because it was a bargain. I thought it would be good to train on after riding them at Pete Boast’s indoor flat track school. I just need somewhere to ride it. I also have a 1976 Bultaco Sherpa 350 in the workshop in a thousand pieces. It belongs to my uncle and I am restoring it slowly.

How did you end up racing with the DTRA? In the early 70s I saw On Any Sunday and spent a lot of time tearing around the garden being Mert Lawill or Gene Romero on my push bike. I fell in love with flat track and must have watched the film 100 times. I still watch it. Forward to 2011 and I had the YZF, which was Sam’s at the time, in the workshop and he wasn’t getting a chance to use it, so I thought I might do the odd motocross. I hadn’t been racing for about seven or eight years at this point. Then I saw the flat track on Motors TV and booked a day at Pete Boast’s training school. I loved it and started converting the bike. It would have been a nightmare without all the help I got from Pete. I turned up at Leicester and came within inches of winning my first race. While I was still feeling like Billy Big Balls about this I hit a fallen rider in my second race. It literally brought me back down to earth breaking my tibia and fibula. I’ve not missed a meeting since and always look forward to the next one. It’s the most fun I’ve had on a motorcycle and some of the best people I’ve ever had the privilege to mix with. I’ve not got long left in the Pro class at my age but I’m pleased to be there at the moment even if I do need a telescope to see the leaders. D

intage Racing Spirit held a demonstration of flat track racing at the Two Wheel Show in Lyon on February 10-12 and the DTRA were there to take part and snap a few shots. It was a first in France with a 200-metre indoor dirt oval specifically made for the event. With over 100 riders taking part it was a great spectacle and showed those visiting the show what flat track was all about. From the UK Anthony Brown and Geoff Cain showed their flat track skills along with many talented French riders who often race with the DTRA including Dimitri Coste, Frank Chatokhine, the Decombard family and Pierre-Alexandre Treust. It was a fun weekend and good to see some old faces, as well meeting lots of new friends, several of which said they are hoping to come along and try racing with the DTRA. We hope those who said this make it along and look forward to inviting you to join the DTRA family. We’d like to say a huge thanks to Sebastien Gerodias from Vintage Racing Spirit for inviting us and putting on a good show. ollowing the success of European Super Hooligan Championships in 2016 the series returns for 2017. The DTRA has once again teamed up with Sideburn Magazine to bring you this European series with four events at some of the most popular races on the flat track calendar. Bikes permitted in the Hooligan Class need to be post 1980 twins that are 750cc and above with unmodified frames, must have the front brake disconnected and feature a cut out. No knobbly tyres are permitted. This racing is more about fun but expect some top class riding regardless. Round Round Round Round

adult solo classes • All riders must be aged 18 or over on 01 January in that competitive season • The top three riders in each season will be removed from the novices and will be promoted to the short track Restricted Class for the following season Machine Type: 2 Stroke – 125cc to 500cc, 4 Stroke – 250cc to unlimited Note: If a rider wishes to be upgraded prior to this or is competitive enough to start racing with us and contest the Pro-Class or the Restricted Class they may request permission from the series organisers. Any such request will be reviewed by the organisers and may be granted solely at the organiser’s discretion.

Get a Licence To race or practice with us you will need to hold a valid MCF Licence. These are available on the MCF website. Day Licences will also be available at our meetings if required. Day Licences are charged at £15 per day for 2016.

Details of each race are included in the race regulations which are issued when the entries open. Entries are made through the DTRA web shop. Entries are all prepay only.

• Singles, four stroke – 600cc to unlimited • V-twins and multi-cylinder four strokes – 600cc to unlimited

Note: Riders on equipment that does not meet the above specification but deemed suitable may also ride in the class but will not be eligible for championship points.

Intermediate Class • For riders aged 10- 15 years on the 01 January in that competitive season • Machines must comply with the technical regulations for the Junior/ Intermediate/Youth classes and the general MCF flat track regulations

Senior Class • For riders aged 14 – 17 years on the 01 January in that competitive season • Machines must comply with the technical regulations for the Junior/ Intermediate/Youth classes and the general MCF flat track regulations
