You know what.... I’ve been sittin’ here thinking about what I wanted to say in my catalogue opening letter and I’ve realized a couple of things just now. This Bull Sale catalogue is way far more than just a bull sale. The older I get the more of the little stuff I am starting to appreciate more and more. It is the 28th of February and it’s -5o C outside, the sun is brilliant and there’s absolutely no wind today. We have just a couple of inches of snow on the ground, the mountains behind my house are absolutely stunning and my kids have been playing outside all afternoon. I have a beautiful wife, my kids have all four of their grandparents, we have a great group of friends all around us and I am happy and very content in the changes and choices I am making for the Brylor Ranch program!! So you will have to forgive me and get over it that my schedule and Grant & Laura Lee’s extremely busy schedule didn’t coincide this year and get any pictures taken for this bull sale catalogue – I was busy with kids, cows and 4-H! So come to Fort Macleod on the 25th and 26 of March and see them in color! I want to make three main points for this year’s opening address for our Bull Sale –

Congratulations to all the survivors that remain in the cow business from the last ten+ years since May 20th of 2003. Enjoy the times we are seeing right now on our prices in our beloved industry. I will always remember the Englishmen telling me at Farmfair in 2003 & 2004 that BSE is the best thing that could happen to your country... in the long run. Times will get better they said. It took eleven years but they were right!

I am going back to a more non-association propaganda kind of a Bull Sale! 90+% of the purebred bull sale catalogues that come in the mail today only put in adjusted weights on their bulls. Do you know how long it would take to run a 2000 head calf sale in October/November if we had to stop and adjust all the weights on the calves in the ring to 205 Day Weights? Actual weaning weights and yearling weights are actual and there is no getting around that fact. It’s sort of like telling the truth – there’s only one version of it!

Everyone is asking me what one bull is going to cost this year? I am not sure but that’s the beauty of the free market/discovery kind of auction system we have! I tell ranchers this though, stay in your comfort zone or level that you have been buying bulls at... plus the additional extra value you get when you salvage your bull. Example – if you’ve been buying at the $4 - $5000 range, then add the extra $2 - $2600 you get nowadays for your cull bulls when you are done with them.... and be at the same great quality bulls as usual in the sale of your choice.

MEET THE JUDGE FOR 2015 ...
Mr. Dick Hardy This year being our 10th Anniversary of hosting the Little Royal, we wanted a cowman who truly represents the perseverance and determination it requires to be a part of our industry, to also be the one to sort the pens of heifers. Dick Hardy is a stockman -– both horses and cows. He, along with his next generation, ranch in the beautiful foothills of the Rockies about twenty miles south of Pincher Creek where raising top quality Angus cattle is a standard on his ranch and a real benchmark. A true gentleman, we are honored to have Dick sort the heifers to mark this 10th Anniversary Little Royal Show & Sale!

My name is Carsen Dunlop. I was born and raised on a mixed farm and ranch west of Granum and for as long as I can remember I have been very involved with it. My family’s agricultural history goes back many years and I hope that there are many more to come. Both the farming and ranching aspects of the agricultural world are very important to me and I like working with them hand in hand. If someone asks what I enjoy doing on my leisure time, I will usually tell them that I like to work and as funny as that sounds, agriculture is my passion and I enjoy pursuing it. I have been involved in agriculture basically my whole life. When I was young my parents made sure that I was able to be a part of whatever was going on and even if I wasn’t being of any help, they would always allow time. I can remember going on many riding trips taking cows to the hills for summer and bringing them back in the fall as well as countless hours sleeping behind the seat of the tractor. I give my parents and grandparent’s credit for making sure I was involved and I think that is the reason that I enjoy it as much as I do today. I am currently attending Lethbridge College in the Agricultural Sciences program which offers classes in both the plant side of things whether that’s grain or pasture, and the animal side. I am presently in my second semester of my first year and after the two year program has concluded my plan is to take my newfound knowledge and bring it back to the farm and use it to the best of my ability. My name is Kayla Trotter and I was born and raised on Lazy S Farms, just southwest of Fort Macleod. I am very active in rodeo and I love fitness training. I am currently enrolled in the Agriculture Technology program offered by the Lethbridge College for this coming up fall semester. As the Sales Manager for MasterFeeds, my Dad has had a major influence over my 3 brothers, 2 sisters and I. Every breakfast, lunch and dinner table discussion would eventually evolve to some sort of agricultural issue. Grain and cattle prices were usually the main topics. Growing up in and around agriculture has helped me understand important life skills such as perseverance and also how to make wise investments with your money. Each calving season, my siblings and I are given a calf and when they are sold each October, the money goes right into a savings account. On my 18th birthday instead of being given some sort of material gift, my parents gave me a cow calf pair, a gift that will continue to give year after year. With both of these examples I was able to learn how to invest my money into something that is going to give me some sort of profit back, rather than just purchasing material items that have no return value. Agriculture has always been a big part of my life and I am excited to expand my knowledge towards something I will be passionate about everyday. I consider being brought up around livestock and farming a great privilege, and I look forward to getting a job that helps further the already thriving industry. Scholarship Recipient Kayla Trotter

His daughters have beautiful udders and are big, growthy cattle. He has had very few calves equal his own birth weight which proves the point that the birth weight column is all relative to how you use an individual bull in your own program. Skor ranks in the top 1% for both Weaning Weight and Yearling Weight and Carcass in Canada and is now breeding cows for Danny & Val Adamson at Forrestburg, AB.

Since making old Arson the high seller at the SSS Sale in 2009, we’ve done with him exactly what we intended... made a pile of money with him! His sons have sold extremely well, his daughters are fast becoming some of the best young cows and his scarce semen has been selling up to $500 U.S./straw. He ranks in the top 2% on Weaning Weight and top 1% on Yearling Weight and Carcass Weight. Interesting to note about this bull, I didn’t always think as highly of him as I do now. He died three years ago and his sons in the sale this year are yearlings... you must have a fairly good opinion of a bull to take the time to A.I. to him, eh? His rare and very valuable semen will primarily be used for ET work now.

Wander puts a nice dark color into his calves, a nice pattern and lots of hair. Wander is now deceased and his progeny will now be limited.

Iceman was part of the pair of 3/4 brothers that were the high selling lots back in our 2013 Bull Sale. Both bulls, 1Z and 8Z, each brought $29,500 to Hazel Bluff and Red Rock respectively. 8Z went on to be syndicated in the USA at $4000/share to five different ranches and 1Z was a feature service sire for the Hazel Bluff Dispersal in 2013. His first calves have been off the charts for calving ease and unprecedented growth and style. No semen has been sold on Iceman 1Z but the market seems to be very receptive to the idea. TERMS & CONDITIONS OF BULL SALE TERMS - The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at Fort Macleod, Alta. The right of property shall not pass until settlement is made. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released. RETAINED INTERESTS - Brylor Ranch is initiating another new program for retaining the right to possibly use a few of the bulls in this 2015 sale. Instead of retaining a 1/3 semen interest in selected lots, we will instead reserve the right to collect 100 straws of semen on any bull in the catalogue at our expense and the buyer’s convenience. Buyer otherwise owns the bull, except in the case of bulls denoted as 1/2 interest lots. BIDS - Every animal entering the sale ring will be sold to the highest bidder A floor price will apply to each animal consigned.
DELIVERY POLICY FOR 2015 • Our new delivery policy implemented in 2013 to get back to
more of a commercial cowman’s way of doing things will apply to our 2015 Bull Sale as well. For years now I’ve stated that 99.9% of the commercial cowboys know it takes three things to go to the bull sale 1) your catalogue, 2) your checkbook, and 3) your trailer!! We would geatly appreciate it if you could bring your own trailer but if you absolutely cannot bring it or you are a “SUS” buyer (Sight Unseen) or going on export down south, then we will help out in any way we can; otherwise... The settlement table look will be in this order: Starting on the left - The sale clerks to take settlement In the middle - Brenda of Pincher Creek Agencies to insure your new purchases On the right - Kody Kropius, our trucker buddy, to help you get your bulls home within a few days of the sale. No bulls, other than the export bulls that require health testing, will be going back to Stauffer Ranches this year. We know and trust that all of our commercial customers can understand this new policy because that is the way it happens every day at every auction market in the country after a sale.
DISPUTES - In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid.
