TO OUR 13TH ANNUAL SPRING BULL SALE!

We would like to thank you all for taking the time to evaluate our program. Whether you are doing this for the first time or you are one of many of our repeat customers, it is truly humbling that you are considering the use of our genetics to be part of your next breeding decision. As well, THANK YOU to everyone who has partaken in last years sales, by bidding, purchasing, or just come to evaluate our stock.

For those of you that are not familiar with our program, it all starts at 66 Ranch with the cow. If the cow isn’t right the bull as far as we are concerned is not either. Our cows are asked to go to work here, which means grazing for many months of the year. Which in turn, lets these cows sort themselves for ease of flesh. Many of our cows are expected to graze right into February. Udder quality is extremely important here as well. We start calving in mid April for two cycles, our cows are calving on green grass. (Hopefully!) Calving at this time of year udder support is of upmost importance. Cows milking heavy on good forage with just a small calf nursing them you will find out quickly how supportive their udder is. Teat size is also very important, our cows calve in large fields and we frankly do not have time to mess with a calf that has a mother with large teats. And of course feet, everybody these days talk about it. It is super important here for the cows that have to walk long distances for forage and to water. It is also very important for the cows here that spend the summer months on our irrigated pastures. Soft and wet soil conditions will tell you really quickly which cattle have the proper feet underneath them. We breed for a moderate framed cow that will convert low and high quality forages into flesh easily, but we do not want to give up pounds at the end of the day so we are always breeding for that extra rib for length and that depth in rib area along with a good hip is where the pounds will come from in our moderate cattle. We have no time for cows that are just small, frail, narrow, and pin assed!

Our bulls on offer are ones we are proud of. Many of the bulls in the offering are a result of A.I. which most of the sires used by us A.I. were raised by us out of cows raised by us. Or were purchased bulls from another breeder with a similar mindset as us and that bull now walks our pastures here and is utilized as well in our A.I. program. We have a lot more confidence in providing our customers with a sound product when we know numerous amounts of the cows and sires in any one pedigree, because they were either raised by us or seen in living flesh at another breeders herd. And that also means stacking good cows on top of good cows in one pedigree to give you a lot more predictable product.

The yearling bulls in the spring sale offering are all the calves born in the month of April. The calves born here from May 1st to May 10th are kept separate and are destined to be in our December bull sale. The calves born from May 11th to about June 10th are kept separate as well and are the calves that make up our 2 Year Old division of our Spring Bull Sale. We feel this is a great way to offer you an excellent group of 2 Year Old bulls. These calves that are grown carefully into 2 Year Olds are never picked through or sorted through except to cull the ones we feel will not make a quality bull for you.

We of course would love it if you all can attend our sale in person, but understand the busy lives everybody leads. So if you are unable to attend you will be able to view and bid on the offering April 18th on DLMS. As well with our bull videos found on the DLMS website or on our website at www.66ranchltd.com you will be able to view each bull in video as well foot photos included in each video of each bull. We also encourage people to stop by the ranch anytime prior to the sale and go through the bull pens and the cow herd. The bulls will be available for viewing at Bow Slope Shipping Association in Brooks, Alberta in the afternoon of April 17th right up until sale time. Please come early on April 18th to view the bulls prior to sale time at 1:30 PM M.S.T. sharp!

An extremely deep sided walking bull purchased from Hamilton Farms. We selected him for his calving ease and extremely good performance. His dam is a favorite at Hamilton’s, a moderate framed cow with an excellent level udder. A walking bull at our place purchased from Hoover Angus. We selected this bull for his added growth and his absolutely perfect feet. His dam walked the pastures at Hoover’s until the age of 16 years old. They pictured her feet at the age of 14 and they are some of the straightest toes I’ve laid eyes on. Hoover No Doubt the sire, is also known for having a super strong foot. After conversations between Malissa and I over the past couple years, we thought being as we were such a maternal based program people may appreciate seeing some photos of our females in our catalogs. These photos may not be the traditional combed up, blown off “Pretty” pictures most people put in their catalogs. These are pictures of our cows in their working clothes.

For any of you that are not completely familiar with our program, we take a photo of all our cows when we tag their newborn calf. This way we can see their bags anytime of the year, and are available to show all of you our cows when their bags are at their fullest, moments after they calve.

A walking bull at the ranch purchased from the super people at Merit Cattle Co. Trent and Janelle Leibreich. We purchased him because he was in our eyes one of the longest, deepest, yet moderate herd bulls in their pen that season. But the determining factor for us deciding to own him was the maternal value he would bring. 6 of the 7 cows on the front of the pedigree were all raised at Merit. Proven, predictable maternal breeding bull here. 32H has and will continue to be bred to some of our top females at our place. Be sure to plan to retain all the heifer calves from 32H, they will be in the replacement pen and in the cow herd for a long time. 32H sires calves with exceptional foot quality. Not unexpected by the foot quality his dam has, as near a perfect foot with exceptional heel as you can find. A cow at 66 Ranch is under great scrutiny from her first calf and continuing on her entire life at our place. A walking bull at the ranch resulting from a flush we did here. We usually only seem to flush a cow here once she has proven herself, well, she was only 14 when we finally decided to flush her. Our choice of bull was also a proven bull, he lasted at our place until he was 10 ½ years old. Both the bull and dam had perfect feet at the end of their time here. A walking bull at the ranch raised by us, a “1D” son. 1D has quickly risen to the top at our place. Raising sons like 48G that are just the right type. Both 1D and 48G stamp their calves the same. Deep, soggy, soft made, moderate, easy to look at Angus cattle. Foot quality is very strong, udders on our milking daughters have been absolutely outstanding!

48G’s dam is about as good as they come, expect females out of the 48G sons to remain in the herd for a long time. With very moderate birthweight on the dam’s side and 1D having moderate birth, feel safe using 48G progeny on 1st calf heifers. Bull calves average birthweight is 78 lbs. Heifer calves is 76 lbs.

• She must calve on time

• She must nurse her calf on her own for her whole life

• She must have proper feet and legs to allow her to travel around our place into her teen years

• She must be able to carry enough flesh throughout the year to be able to graze right until February without added protein (if winter allows it)

• She must be fertile enough to get bred either by 21 days of A.I. and 21 days of a walking bull. She’s got 42 days to get bred!

• She must wean a quality calf, if it’s a bull calf, needs to be one we can sell to our commercial customers, or a heifer calf, to be quality enough to go to our replacement pen

Plain and simple, 17Z has it all. Performance, ease of flesh, leg structure, super foot, free moving, maternal. We feel we have lucked out and finally raised one that can compete with any A.I sire.
