Joann and Russ Murphy

Welcome to Pentwater

Hello and welcome to Pentwater. We are the Murphys, Russ and Joann, residents of Pentwater for eight months of the year and lifelong Michiganders. We first came to Pentwater as newlyweds in the early 1970s and returned every summer for two weeks, and any weekends we could steal away, eventually finding a piece of land to buy where we camped with our three daughters before building our home. Pentwater was a summer vacation destination for Joann as a child, a place that her godfather frequently wrote about in his Detroit Free Press column and a place that we eagerly awaited our return to each summer. When asked to share some thoughts and a Welcome to Pentwater, we felt that we should try to convey what is special about this place and know, as visitors, you will experience it yourself as you spend some time in our community. Immediately, the answers came to mind and our challenge was to paint the picture, through words, of this place we know and love and just what makes it different from other little towns that dot the coast of scenic Lake Michigan. Could it be the five block village without a single traffic light; the channel and the splendid opening into the greatest of the Great Lakes; the beach during the four seasons and the sense of calm it

creates even in its wildest of days; Hancock Street as it swells with activity as the days turn warm and shrinks as the cold advances; Pentwater schools and the pride this town feels about their students; the historic homes and buildings that line the streets; the Memorial Day Parade and the veterans who remind us of sacrifices and fill us with pride; the Pentwater Artisan Learning Center, where the sharing of ideas and talents creates friendships, perhaps the greatest of all the creations; the S.O.S. (Start of Summer) Party each June; Pentwater Homecoming weekend festivities and the generations drawn back to their roots each year; the village green, an epicenter of so many family activities; the Thursday night band concerts and chicken dance lessons; the filled churches most every Sunday; the Wednesday community dinners; the Pentwater Historical Society where the stories of those who came before us are told; the Pentwater Friendship Center; the three ice cream shops within five blocks; the bike sharing project; and a state park only blocks from downtown? From our perspective, what makes Pentwater special is the community, its CONTINUED ON PAGE 13 PENTWATER THIS WEEK 1

The course is set. Dotting the landscape are blue and yellow ramps, a red tunnel, PVC pipe hurdles, a rubber hoop and more. Youth in green shirts with a white paw print and the words “Bella’s Bouncing Buddies 4-H Club,” guide dogs of all shapes, sizes and colors through the course to show off their practiced agility. Calling advice and praise from the sea of spectators is their leader, Nancy Koposky. Though short in stature, she is commanding when it comes to teaching her charges and protecting them with momma-bear instincts. “The kids and dogs are my first priority,” she said. “I’m very protective of the kids.”

2 PENTWATER THIS WEEK

Koposky is the epitome of a real-life dog and pony show. As a horse trainer and 4-H horse leader for more than 20 years in Newaygo and Oceana counties, she turned her attention to her beloved pooches, when the group’s namesake, 10-year-old Austrailian Shepherd Bella Rae came into Koposky’s life. “Bella was fearful, so I started doing dog training,” she explained. “I got Bella at three months old and started training her at seven months old for agility in Ludington. She had an extreme fear of people.” Koposky also has a 13-year-old poodle, named Mitzi, who likes to stay home, out of the limelight. However, Koposky jokingly noted that Mitzi used to like to “go out and boss everybody around.”

AUG. 16 - AUG. 23

Since starting the group, Koposky has added an additional Australian Shepherd to her family in 5-year-old Lulu Grace who loves attention. In addition to her dogs, Koposky said she has had llamas and horses in the past and she and her husband still have Scottish Highlander dairy cows. Bella’s Bouncing Buddies, a name Koposky said the children of her group came up with, consists of 10 members and their faithful fourlegged friends. Koposky said she limits the number of participants due to her age and wants to give each as much attention as possible. Yet at 75, she is not slowing down. Pointing out her club’s members, Koposky noted that “Some are first year and some are six-year members. It all started when Maisie (Whitaker) and her dad (Eric) came for lessons. She was 8 years old and her dog

(Honey) was less than a year. I had been a horse leader and thought ‘I like dogs, let’s start a dog club.’” Koposky stopped for a moment, pointed at Maisie and Honey and said, “You’re the reason I started this club.” To which, Maisie returned a beaming smile. Since their inception, six years ago, Bella’s Bouncing Buddies is still Oceana County’s only 4-H dog club. Koposky has always been open to all breeds to participate and puts no limits on that or where they are obtained from. As part of club membership, Koposky requires parents to be present at every meeting and event. “Surprisingly, the parents love this as much as their children do,” she said. “The kids rarely miss a meeting. We meet every other Saturday in the winter and once a week in the summer.” Koposky does not do this alone, Eric Whitaker, Masie’s dad, co-leads with her and she noted that he is “so much help.” In the mix too is, Gloria Ritchie. “She came at 80 years old just to watch and now at 82, she is a 4-H leader with us,” Koposky said. “I couldn’t do this without Eric and my co-leaders. They treat me like a princess when I’m tired.” This type of training has done wonders for the children, their dogs and initially for Bella. She now readily goes up to people to be petted and still likes to get involved. She is well-loved by the group and her training shows. As Koposky spoke of her, Bella took a turn on the agility course and knew it so well, she went back to do a hurdle she had missed. Koposky marveled, stating that Bella had not done agility in five years. Bella did not go fast, but she powered through the entire course, and was led by member and co-leader Brittney Cornell. This course was set up on the Pentwater Village Green during the

Pentwater postpones dredging for 2016

PENTWATER — Because the contractor ran late on another job, Pentwater Village officials recently decided not to do any channel mouth dredging at Lake Michigan this year. Pentwater Village Manager Rob Allard told council at its Aug. 8 meeting that contractor M.C.M. Marine of Sault St. Marie got tied up completing channel dredging in Ludington, so Pentwater Village officials made the call in late July to postpone channel mouth dredging. The downside, Allard said, is the village might have to forego a $17,884 Michigan Waterways grant that would have assisted with the dredging costs. In June, council approved going forward with dredging after receiving a $55,775 quote to perform the work as M.C.M. would have a crew working in the area. Village officials said they received no reports of problems from boaters entering and exiting the A sailboat leaves the Pentwater channel into Lake Michigan Friday, Aug. 5. The Pentwater Village Council decided, at its Aug. 8 meeting to postpone this year’s scheduled dredging of the channel after channel as part of the “Back from the Mac” event last the contractor hired to do the dredging was delayed due to another job. month.

Land swap goes forward with quit-claim deed PENTWATER — Despite some concerns, the Pentwater Village Council Aug. 8 approved accepting a quit-claim deed from Pentwater Township as part of the agreement for a land swap between the two municipalities. Council voted 6-1 to accept the land swap based on recommendations by Pentwater Village Manager Rob Allard and attorney Brian Monton. Councilman Don Palmer cast the lone no vote due to concerns over the quit-claim deed, but said he’d be willing to assist village staff with grant application development in any way he can. Earlier this summer, the village traded a 1.7-acre village-owned parcel at Lansing and BR-31 across from the Lighthouse Lutheran Church for a 2.5-acre township-owned parcel on both sides of BR-31 near the Pentwater tennis courts. Allard said the exchange will allow for the village to expand its recreational op-

portunities. Allard and Monton told council Aug. 8 that after searching, a clear title for the townshipowned property could not be located. They recommended the village accept the quitclaim deed as the property has been under township-ownership since 1920 when it reverted to the township through a tax foreclosure. Monton also said he believed if anyone came forward to challenge ownership, the vil-

lage would likely win if the matter were ever taken to court. Councilwoman April Watkins asked what the cost would be to go through the quiet title procedure, and Monton estimated legal and publishing fees would cost approximately $3,000. Councilman Jared Griffis said the lack of a title to the property is a township issue, and believed township should pay any costs related to the title.

TRUSTWORTHY FOR 100 YEARS

PENTWATER — Concerns over bicyclists not obeying traffic rules were expressed to Pentwater Police Chief Laude Hartrum just prior to his monthly police activity report to the Pentwater Village Council Aug. 8. Pentwater Village President Juanita Pierman expressed her concerns about bicyclists ignoring traffic signs and traffic laws as they ride through the village. Pierman said she wanted to get the word out that bicyclists are required to obey traffic laws while riding. Hartrum said there is a large number of bicyclists in the village this year, and it has led to other problems such as vandalism and theft.

As part of the celebration, the Village of Pentwater is trying to showcase a DVD filled with fantastic recognizable areas of Pentwater “Throughout the Years.” Claudia Ressel-Hodan is looking for reel to reel “old film”, Super 8, VHS, DVD clips showing family and friends in recognizable areas of the village. Shake, Wag and Roll fundraiser for L.A.S.S.I. Koposky said that this is the fourth year Bella’s Bouncing Buddies have performed at Shake, Wag and Roll. She also added that they have been to the Oceana County Medical Care Facility and the Pentwater library, among other places, with the dogs. As an additional learning project for her 4-H Club, a friend of Koposky’s, who makes fancy dog collars, provided pre-cut material for each member to make their dog its own show collar. The dogs had these on display and each shone in the sunshine with its array of green, white and silver sequined material. After completing the agility course, the group moved over to the pavilion on the village green to perform tricks. Carly Califf had her dog, Rocket, move through her legs as she walked across the pavilion. David Routley, and his dog, Patch perform their “famous box trick” where Patch climbs into and sits in boxes of various shapes and sizes on command. Koposky and Cornell then had Bella pick up an array of dropped objects and return them to Koposky. Eric Whitaker, who had been announcing for the entire exhibition said, “We all need a dog like this to pick up around the house.” Koposky said to those gathered that the biggest thing Bella has picked up is a garbage pail lid. As Koposky spoke, Bella picked up a fly swatter, a bottle and a flower pot. She then stood her front paws on a plastic container that had her name written on pink duct-tape encircling it and moved around it on Koposky’s command. Next up was Cornell’s brother, Eddie, and their dog Oliver, who jumped through a hula hoop. In the mix of agility and tricks were also Alayna Hammerle and her dog Oliver, a.k.a. Dozer, as he likes to knock things over; Kaylee Tanner and her dog Sam; Abbi Schroeder and her dog Zeb; and Caela Schroeder and her dog Fudge

,who did a great trick of jumping up and sitting on her walker. Koposky returned to center stage again, this time with Lulu and explained and performed several learned commands. She explained the command “by me” can be used when a dog takes off and they will come back after hearing the command. Lulu never missed a beat. Koposky then explained “front,” stating “a dog can be anywhere in the house or in the field and when they hear this they will come and sit in front of you.” She went on to say that when they worked on this command with the group, they started at 30 feet and eventually got up to 120 feet and the dogs would still come. “When you want to teach a dog a new thing, do it five times and they start to pick it up,” Koposky advised. “Dog training is not easy” Koposky said, adding that when it came to learning the ropes, divine intervention stepped in each time. “I’ve been really blessed. When I needed to go to the next level, someone would come into my life and raise my expertise level.” Koposky teaches reward-based training. “For a correct response, they get a treat. I teach the

kids to use a marker word. They like to use ‘yes’, which tells the dog ‘you did what I wanted and get a treat.’ The kids can use a clicker, but they find it hard to use when guiding their dog.” she explained. “There is no discipline, it is all reward-based.” The exhibition in Pentwater is helping the club prepare for its judged showing at the 145th annual Oceana County Fair in Hart Aug. 23-27. The dogs and their owners have four events to strut their stuff in: agility, rally, obedience and tricks. Koposky explained that rally is an obstacle course that has numbered signs to

indicate what maneuver must be performed at each. Bella’s Bouncing Buddies will be at the fair Tuesday, Aug. 23 starting at 4 p.m. Aside from showing skills, Koposky has looked to showcase other learning experiences for her group. “One time the kids did

paintings of their dogs and taught the dogs to swipe their paw to paint on a picture.” “I love working with these kids. It’s a wonderful group. I’ve watched them grow so tall I can hardly see over them anymore.” Koposky said. “They keep me off the couch. We have so much fun.”

DDA, Pentwater Arts Council to unveil ‘Purposeful Art’ Bike Stand Monday Pentwater will welcome its first piece of “street art” Monday evening, Aug. 22 as the Pentwater Village Downtown Development Authority and the Pentwater Arts Council unveil a “Purposeful Art” Bike Stand at the corner of Hancock and First streets. The concept behind the all metal bike stand featuring a fish theme was the winning design in the Pentwater Arts Council bike stand contest submitted by Pentwater sixth grader Aiden Shotwell. Shotwell’s design was one of a number of ideas submitted to the arts council by Pentwater students and residents. Shotwell’s design captured the judges eye and was selected as the winner, according to Pentwater Arts Council member Mary Stiphany. Contest judges included a well-formed group of community members and artists from the Artisan Center, Paul O’Grady, Dick Johnson, Gene Davidson, Kendra

Flynn, Ted Cuchna, Claudia Ressel-Hodan and Stiphany. The team of judges believed Shotwell’s design could be transformed into reality, represented Pentwater and had the artistic desired look, said Ressel-Hodan. After the design was approved, engineer Paul O’Grady got to work making a CAD drawing, did the cutouts and sent them to be powder-coated. Once it was powder-coated, artist Larry Pazol provided the finishing touches painting colorful fish, to give it a truly unique appearance. Shotwell’s name will be featured on a plaque located on the bike rack and he will be awarded a $50 check from the Pentwater Arts Council. “This is a excellent example of how Pentwater works as a community,” said Ressel-Hodan. The unveiling of the new bike rack will be followed by a Monday night bike ride led by the Pentwater-Hart Bike Trail Committee. The group hosts a leisurely 3-mile ride through Pentwater every Monday at 7 p.m., and usually meets at the top of the village green at 7 p.m.
