Hart lost its first two matches in sweeps, to Western Michigan Christian and Fremont. The Pirates drove the second game of the Warriors’ loss to 28-26 before falling. In their final match of the day, Hart lost a 15-11 squeaker in game three after splitting the first two games. Shelby 3-2 @ West Ottawa Invite HOLLAND, Sept. 24 — Shelby won the Silver bracket championship Saturday at the West Ottawa Invitational after going 1-2 in pool play. The Tigers scored wins over some bigger programs at the meet. Shelby opened the day with losses to Hudsonville and East Grand Rapids, but bounced back to get a 25-23, 25-23 win over Thornapple Kellogg to close pool play. That advanced the Tigers to the consolation bracket, where they defeated Allegan 25-19, 27-25 and then edged Reeths-Puffer in the finals 25-23, 20-25, 16-14. “The girls played really well,” Shelby coach Tom Weirich said. “It’s a big tournament with lots of Class A and B schools. Smith was the Tigers’ leading defender, posting 55 digs and four blocks on the day. Tori Mussell added three blocks and Brooke James two. Kasey Morse posted 114 assists. Josh Armstrong said Hart’s two wins contstituted the team’s best matches of the season. Mason Co. Central 3, Hart 2 HART, Sept. 27 — Hart lost to Mason County Central Tuesday night in a five-game match. The Spartans earned revenge for a loss to Hart at the previous Saturday’s Onekama Invitational. Hart dropped to 3-13-3 and 0-5 in WMC play. No statistics were reported. Montague 3, Shelby 0 MONTAGUE, Sept. 27 — Shelby had high hopes of an upset going into Tuesday’s West Michigan Conference battle against firstplace Montague, but it wasn’t to be as the Tigers dropped a 25-20, 25-13, 25-13 decision. “If we serve receive well, we do well, and tonight we didn’t,” Shelby coach Tom Weirich said. “We managed (Montague star Emma) Flagstead in the front row pretty well, but they proceeded to serve us off the floor.” McKenna Peters led the Tigers (19-7-2, 3-2 WMC), with 18 digs and seven kills, and Jaren Smith also had seven kills. Kasey Morse had a nice night serving, with six aces, and also contributed 18 assists. Pentwater 3, Walkerville 0 PENTWATER, Sept. 27 — Pentwater took care of previously unbeaten county foe Walkerville Tuesday night, winning in three games, 25-16, 25-11, 25-16. The Falcons remained unbeaten themselves in West Michigan D League action, going to 3-0 and 12-6-2 overall. Walkerville dropped to 3-1 and 2-1 in WMD action. It was the first time all season that Pentwater’s full lineup was available, and the results were solid despite the group not all being 100 percent. “We took a while to get into a groove tonight,” Falcons’ coach Kerry Newberg said. “When we didn’t have Taylor (Wilkinson) and Linnea (McDonough), the other girls really stepped up play, but having them back tonight it seemed some of them took it easy and didn’t play to their capability. I am hoping we can bring it all together as our season continues and our competition in non-league games improves.” Wilkinson had a big game offensively, posting 21 kills to lead the Falcons. “Taylor Wilkinson really hit the ball hard tonight,” Newberg said. “Walkerville didn’t have an answer for her.” McDonough had 23 digs on the defensive end, another team high. Allison McGregor had 25 assists, and Julia Hall notched four aces.

Cross Country Walkerville boys 3rd @ WMD Jamboree; Merten wins again BEAR LAKE, Sept. 21 — Walkerville’s boys cross-country team had to settle for third place last Wednesday at the West Michigan D League’s third jamboree. Pentwater’s teams both finished in fourth. Tyler Sheehy and Shane Achterhof continued their strong seasons, taking fourth and fifth place respectively in the boys race. Sheehy finished in 18:39 while Achterhof came across in 18:41. Dillon Brown was 14th for the Wildcats, with a time of 20:18. Walkerville’s remaining scorers were Brandon Tyler and Diego Rivera, who placed 32nd and 33rd respectively with times of 23:25 and 23:27. Perrin Kirwin suffered a setback in his second jamboree since returning from injury, placing 35th with a time of 23:36. Emily Merten won the girls’ race for the Wildcats, coming across 37 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. She finished in 21:44. Emily Achterhof took 19th place (29:17) and Hayley Adams was 27th (31:48). For the Pentwater boys, Max Stoneman was the first finisher, coming in 13th place. His time

was 20:16. Iain Stewart placed 18th (20:43), Mitchell Smith was 20th (21:14) and Seth Davila was 22nd (21:38). Jake Quinn closed out Pentwater’s scoring, coming in 28th (22:57). Brianna Adams topped the Falcon girls, placing 14th in a time of 27:25. Valentina Ojeda crossed in 30:01 and took 22nd, followed by teammates Madeline Reitsma (24th, 31:31), Mackenzie Breitner (26th, 32:01) and Payton Patterson-Skuse (28th, 32:24). Shelby girls 8th, boys 11th @ Oakridge Invite MUSKEGON, Sept. 24 — Shelby’s cross-country teams competed at Saturday’s Oakridge Invitational, with the Tigers’ girls coming in eighth place while the boys finished 11th. All five Shelby girls to score set new season bests. Abby Bahena led Shelby, running 31st in the girls’ race with a time of 22:28.6. Brooklyn Jones followed in 35th place, with a time of 22:49.8. Grace Parsekian came in 41st, with a time of 23:17.3. Maya Cornaby (47th, 23:46.6) and Brittany Hubbard (73rd, 29:50.7) rounded out Shelby’s scoring. In the boys’ race, it was Nick Felt leading the way for Shelby, placing 26th with a time of 18:21.7, a personal best. Will Kidder also set a personal best, taking 47th place with a time of 19:47.7. Dylan Towne placed 60th and finished in 20:27.2, and Michael McLouth’s time of 20:56.3 put him in 66th. The fifth Tigers’ scorer was Dylan Berens, who was 76th (22:30.2). Pirate girls win GRCC Invite; boys 6th GRAND RAPIDS, Sept. 23 — The Hart girls cross-country team continued its strong performance this season by taking first place in the Grand Rapids Community College Invitational, edging Rockford by eight points. Nine of Hart’s runners posted their personal best times in the race, including Adelyn Ackley, who again dominated and won by over a minute. Her time was 17:32.8. Sierra Albus ran a strong race and finished in second, with a time of 18:45.2, and Alayna Ackley placed fifth with a time of 19:26.5. Hart also got scoring performances and personal bests from Brenna Aerts and Alison Altland. Aerts was 14th (20:31.7) and Altland placed 16th (20:48.6). “The girls are narrowing the gaps in time which has improved their team standings in the region and state,” Hart coach Terry Tatro said. The boys’ race featured six more Hart personal best times — as Tatro said, “It was a perfect day to run with overcast skies, light wind, and a flat and fast course.” Hunter Tubbs topped Hart finishers, in 17th place. His time was a personal best 17:20.3. William Schlaack came across in 18:09.7 and took 33rd place, and Abram Enns was 38th (18:15.6). The final two Pirates’ scorers finished at the same time. Jovanni Hernandez and Robbie Altland turned in identical times of 20:08.2, both season bests, but Hernandez got the nod for 73rd place while Altland was 74th. Hesperia boys 3rd @ Evart Invite EVART, Sept. 24 — Hesperia’s boys cross-country team finished third at Saturday’s Evart Invitational, six points ahead of Manton. The Panthers’ girls could not post a team score. Kyle Venne led the Panthers, earning a season-best time of 18:01.1 and finishing in fifth place in the race. Collin Nielsen wasn’t far behind, placing eighth with a time of 18:20.6. Zach Young took 12th, in a time of 18:41.6. Connor Baird narrowly missed a top-20 placement, coming in 21st with his own season-best time of 19:30.9. Jeremiah Hasty set a new personal record with a mark of 19:42.4, good for 23rd place. Brianna Bremer’s personal best time of 24:57.3 led Hesperia’s girls, and she placed 17th. Darby VanAvery was 23rd and had a time of 27:43.3. Camryn Johnson (27th, 32:44.1) and

Hart girls win another jamboree MUSKEGON, Sept. 27 — The Hart Pirates’ girls edged out Whitehall again in Tuesday’s North Muskegon jamboree, taking the top spot by five points, 30-35. Hart’s boys moved up from sixth to fifth place, and Shelby’s girls and boys were sixth and seventh respectively. Hart again had the top three finishers in the girls’ race, and Adelyn Ackley led the way for the Pirates with a time of 17:49.4. Sierra Albus finished in 18:52.0, and Alayna Ackley came in with a time of 18:59.4. The Pirates weren’t able to get any other scorers into Whitehall’s group of five finishers, as coach Terry Tatro said he was hoping for after last week’s jamboree, but they came close. Alison Altland came in 11th place with a personal best time of 20:40.8, just three seconds behind the Vikings’ fifth runner, Ellie Stevens. Brenna Aerts closed out Hart’s scoring with a time of 21:28.95, good for 13th place. Hart’s boys came in fifth and finished just three points behind fourth-place Oakridge. Hunter Tubbs turned in another top-10 performance, coming in seventh place with a time of 17:29.8.

Andrew Whitney placed 17th with a time of 18:02.8, and Abram Enns also reached the top 20, in 19th place. His time was 18:17.6. Also scoring for Hart were William Schlaack (25th, 18:39.8) and Nahum Rodriguez (40th, 20:00.8). Shelby’s girls came in sixth place, but had a great day as a team with the top four runners posting personal best times. Brooklyn Jones led the Tigers by coming in 17th place with a time of 22:07.5, and Abby Bahena and Grace Parsekian placed 20th and 21st respectively, with times

Week 6 kickoff caught another scoring pass from Tanner shortly thereafter to tie the score at 12. The Tigers went on top in the fourth quarter on a Kristian OberlinTristan Hill touchdown connection, but Hart’s late rally turned that play into a footnote. Blake Jones paced Shelby, rushing for 101 yards on 19 carries in a losing effort. Tanner was Hart’s top runner, going for 99 yards on 14 carries in addition to his big passing day. Aguilar totaled 111 yards receiving on four catches, and McGhan and Gus Gale combined for 108 more. Hart moves on to its homecoming game this week against Mason County Central. The Spartans have been struggling in a big way since losing quarterback Austin Tyndall to a season-ending knee injury against Shelby, having put up only 13 total points in three losses since. That said, MCC was a playoff team last season, and Witteveen knows the Spartans will come in having made the necessary offensive tweaks. “They have a lot of good athletes, good kids,” Witteveen said. “I highly respect (MCC coach) Scott Briggs. It will be a tough ball game. Like any team that loses an exceptional ballplayer, they have adjustments to make and they’re making them.” Travis Tyndall, MCC’s top running back, moved to quarterback for last week’s Spartans’ loss to North Muskegon, which should provide the visitors with a new and challenging look for the Hart defense to stop. Shelby, too, has a homecoming showdown this week, taking on Ravenna. The Bulldogs will come in with a 3-2 record, but those two losses came against the class of the WMC in Montague and Oakridge. Ravenna signal-caller David Thompson ranks as one of the most dangerous athletes in the area, and he will be a handful for the Shelby defense, just as he was against Hart in a week three victory. Attempts to reach Shelby coach Lorenzo Rodriguez were unsuccessful.

of 22:24.8 and 22:27.99. Maya Cornaby was Shelby’s fourth personal best runner, in 35th place with a time of 23:35.5. Rounding out Shelby’s scoring was Brittany Hubbard, in 67th (27:51.4). Nick Felt paced Shelby’s boys with a personal best time of 18:01.9, coming in 16th. Dylan Towne was 43rd (20:18.4) and Will Kidder was 48th (20:38.2). Shelby’s remaining scorers were Tony Green (65th, 22:18.4) and Roman Burill (67th, 22:30.8).

improving to 3-2 with a 51-0 shutout of the Indians. The Panthers’ running game looked back to its explosive ways in the game, with the top two backs each averaging over 10 yards per carry. Kanin Witte went for 114 yards on just 10 attempts, scoring twice, and Gerrit Yates put up 91 yards and a score on nine attempts. Yates also caught a 21-yard touchdown from Brendan McAree, Hesperia’s only completion in the game. “Our focus was really good,” Hesperia coach Doug Bolles said. “After the loss to MorleyStanwood in week three, we’ve been locked in at practice and have prepared ourselves for our last two contests. We know we’re at a point where we can’t look past anyone.” Gage Balkema and Jake Klemundt combined for 101 more rushing yards, each scoring a touchdown. Balkema led Hesperia defensively with eight tackles, one of which earned his defense a safety, and had an interception too. Witte also picked off a pass. The Panthers’ defense also put up points when Yates forced a fumble on a sack, giving Kevin Schooley an easy scoop-and-score touchHesperia vs Lakeview down from 37 yards away. “Balkema and Witte have Hesperia had no trouble at all with White Cloud Friday night, really been key contributors

this season on defense and especially these past two weeks, as we’ve given up one score in two games,” Bolles said. Things pick back up for the 3-2 (2-1 Central State Activities Association Silver) Panthers this week, though, as they play host to Lakeview. Hesperia easily beat the Wildcats last year, but Lakeview enters this game with a 3-2 record and an impressive win over Kent City most recently in the rear view mirror. “We’re going to have to play a great game, which we will be prepared to do,” Bolles said. “They have an athletic backfield and they are very well coached. They run the veer and run it well. We must stay disciplined and bring the pressure.” Hesperia knows its margin for error is slim. With a very tough contest at Muskegon Catholic the only remaining road game on the schedule, the Panthers’ beating their opponents at home is likely their most navigable route back to the playoffs. “One of our goals is to take care of business and win all of our games at home,” Bolles said. “If we do that, the playoffs will be reached. But it’s one practice at a time, one game at a time.”
