The Hart - West Shore FFA Chapter was chartered in 2013 under the leadership of Hart High School teacher Elizabeth Krhovsky. Originally from Corunna, Mich., Krhovsky was raised on a registered holstein dairy and 1,200 acre cash crop farm. Growing-up she was an active member of the Corunna FFA Chapter and later served as a State Officer for the Michigan FFA Association. Krhovsky is a 2012 graduate of Michigan State University where she majored in Environmental Studies and Agriscience; with minors in Agriculture Education, biology, and science and policy. This is Krhovsky’s second year at Hart High School where she founded the Hart - West Shore FFA Chapter. When asked why she chose to teach in Hart Krhovsky explained that she was excited to take on the challenge of starting an FFA chapter from scratch. Krhovsky is described by her students as, “Someone who strives to take her teams to higher levels of competition with her competitive attitude.” She constantly pushes her students to go the extra mile in ev-

erything, whether it’s a state competition or something as simple as their homework. “Krhovsky is an excellent teacher because of her capability to connect with her students socially. She knows

what its like to be in a high school experience similar to her students. She has experiences that prove to be more similar to ours than the majority of the teachers at Hart.”

FFA members travel to nationals in Louisville By Haley Walsworth Hart-West Shore FFA

Eight members of the Hart-West Shore FFA program traveled to Louisville, Ky in late October to take part in the FFA National Convention in the Kentucky Exposition Center. The convention included over 55,000 FFA members from all 50 states. Members from the Hart-West Shore FFA Chapter included, Caleb Fuehring, Alex Comstock, Lane Stotler, Gavin Porter, Brooke Loudermilk, Haley Walsworth, Lauren Hegedus and Kaytlin Hildreth. With a long drive ahead the students awaited the memories that would be made during the National Convention. While at the convention the students experienced the career show, watching hypnotist Dr. Al Snyder and

listening to Nick Vujicic speak. The career show allowed the chapter to meet new people and learn interesting facts about agriculture jobs around the nation. During the hypnotist show Hart-West Shore FFA member Gavin Porter participated in the act by volunteering to be hypnotized. Porter and a member from another chapter entertained the crowd as if they were the band Florida Georgia Line. The members also had a chance to listen to motivational speaker, Nick Vujicic. Members took his words to heart as he spoke about difficult times around the world. As the convention came to a close the students were excited to share the knowledge they gained at the convention with fellow FFA chapter member at home.

FFA students at the Michigan FFA Broiler Chicken Contest in Fowlerville.

Students raise chickens By Sydney Scarbrough Hart-West Shore FFA Student

In September, the Hart-West Shore FFA program welcomed 150 chicks. To prep, they equipped the barns with chick guards, newspaper, sawdust flakes, red lights and a feeder and waterer. While unloading the chicks, they introduced each one to the feeder and waterer individually. The class even added CD players to keep out intruders and to entertain the poultry. Each student was required to complete chores twice a day for three

days, evenly distributing the chores amongst the class. Students periodically calculated feed intake to weight gain ratios and other conversions. Gavin Porter, Alex Comstock, Lars Matson and Lane Stotler raised a group of birds outside of the class to increase the chances of Hart-West Shore FFA placing in the broiler contest. Every two weeks FFA Advisor Elizabeth Krhovsky visited their houses to help examine the growing process and administer advice. After six weeks of vigorous feeding FFA members traveled to the

statewide chicken broiler contest in Fowlerville. Matson, Porter, Comstock and Stotler each brought five of their own birds to be judged. At the contest, the facility over-

flowed with judges, students and the birds. Schools from around the state competed, proudly presenting the weeks of dedication in the form of their best chickens. Chickens varied in

size, temperament and color. As a program, Hart-West Shore FFA earned a silver medal. Individually Gavin Porter won a silver medal as well.

FFA donates to needy families By Lauren Hegedus Hart-West Shore FFA Student

Every year, the Hart High School Student Council collects canned goods and organizes them into food baskets for local families in need for Thanksgiving. Typically, the student council goes out and buys turkeys for the baskets from local grocers, but this year Hart-West Shore FFA wanted to get involved. Giving back to the community in some shape or form is something every FFA chapter desires. It is part of the motto that every chapter follows: “Learning to do, Doing to learn, Earning to live, Living to serve.” The food basket program presented the Hart-West Shore FFA with the perfect opportunity to serve the community. The chapter raised chickens in the fall and they had recently been slaughtered. As part of giving back to the community, Hart-West Shore FFA donated around 80 chickens to the food basket program. This allowed each family to receive two chickens with their food baskets. During the week of Thanksgiving,

a group of student council executives and a couple of FFA members drove around the school district delivering baskets. Those who were home to receive the baskets showed immense amounts of joy and gratitude for the program. This showed the group the true meaning of the season. Through this donation, Hart-West Shore FFA helped 40 families celebrate Thanksgiving.

Hands on in the classroom By Genevieve Gottardo Hart-West Shore FFA Student

From executing different sutures to learning how to bandage a pet or taking TPR (temperature, pulse and respiration), Hart-West Shore FFA students have been engaging themselves in activities for the vet science unit. Suture (a type of stitch used to help close up a wound): FFA students used yellow sponges and needles to practice continuous and noncontinuous sutures. Students soon found out how tricky it is to make a perfect stitch teaching them how many veterinarians have truly mastered the art. Bandage: Students were asked to bring in household items that could be used for a bandage. Examples of items students brought in included; plastic wrap, ponytail holders and washcloths. They even practiced by wrapping them around each others arms and legs. TRP: Students learned to take the • Contributed photo temperature of canines and felines. Hart-West Shore FFA members hosted a labor auction as a way to get the community involved and raise money for the purchase of their official FFA jackets; each jacket costs $50. Students were “purchased” in exchange for four hours of labor. The auction was ogranized by FFA students and turned out to be quite successful raising $1,800; enough money for each participant to receive a FFA jacket.

The Hart - West Shore Agriscience Advisory Board monitor finances and organizes events and activities for Hart-West Shore FFA. Made up of local farmers and industry professionals, all the members possess profound knowledge in agriculture. The support of local community members, farmers and agribusiness is essential to the program since it inspires young individuals to get involved in the agriculture industry. The board also advises what the best plan of action is for succeeding in awards and competitions. The goal of the advisory program is to help further the Hart-West Shore FFA program and aims to inspire area youth to get involved with local agricultural programs. The board works with the West Shore ESD to establish a budget for the FFA program, which determines events program members can take part in. In the past, this budget has helped the FFA program build the chicken coop and three barns, located behind the school and purchase greenhouse supplies and learning tools for the classroom. The collaboration between the ESD and the advisory board aims to enhance and ensure the Hart-West Shore FFA Chapter’s future.

FFA members at the Oceana County Medical Care Facility.

By Gavin Porter

During the Christmas season Hart-West Shore FFA members went Christmas caroling at The Oceana County Medical Care Facility. The idea of going Christmas caroling at the nursing home came up during one of the chapter’s meetings. All members agreed and advisor Elizabeth Krhovsky contacted the OCMCF to schedule the visit. FFA students met the morning of the visit and traveled to the OCMCF on a school

bus. Upon their arrival Krhovsky handed everyone five pages of carols to sing. The FFA students entered the facility and started to sing as they made two laps around the halls of the facility. Some of the residents were still asleep while others were in their doorways and common areas listening to them. It was great to see everyone’s smiling faces and the staff seemed to enjoy it as well. FFA students had a blast going and on the way home a few members were already talking about more ways Hart-West Shore FFA ccould volunteer.

Hart-West Shore FFA Student

A trio of Hart-West Shore FFA members, Lars Mattson of Ludington and Gavin Porter and Alex Comstock of Shelby, attended the Farm Bureau Future Farmers of America Discussion Meet at Ravenna High School in November. The discussion meet featured FFA students competing against each other in a formal discussion to come Comstock to an agreement on a given topic. Each student was given 30 seconds to state their opinion, followed by a 15 minute open forum discussion, and the contest ended with each giving a one minPorter ute conclusion. The meet consisted of a preliminary round followed by a final round. Comstock and Porter advanced to the finals and compete against each other and four other FFA Mattson students. Comstock was awarded first place and was to competed at the state meet in Grand Rapids.

Animal science is hands-on with livestock

FFA students, from left to right, Lauren Hegedus, Jessica Riggs and Haleigh Schaner show off the program’s baby lamb, Daisy, just days after she was born.

By Amanda Ponce Hart-West Shore FFA Student

The Hart - West Shore FFA barns are full of animals this month; currently housing two female goats, two sheep and one baby lamb, with more babies on the way. One of the sheep has delivered a baby lamb that the class decided the name Daisy. The program’s other sheep is due to have a lamb at the end of the month. The goats are also expecting to have their offspring in March. All of the animals were donated to the program. The sheep came from Shiawassee County Farmer, Dennis Matthews

while the goats were donated by Shiawassee County producer, Dawn Reha; friends of FFA Advisor Elizabeth Krhovsky. The animals are used as teaching aids for the program’s vet science unit. Students were able to give vaccinations and dock the tail with the assistance of Merten Farms of Hart. Students are also learning the skill of responsibility. Students are required to complete chores twice a day; this includes feeding, watering, grooming and cleaning pens. This summer several of the FFA members will purchase the animals from the FFA Chapter and show them at the Oceana County Fair in August.
