OEDIPUS REX Weekender

Saturday, April 8th Anderson University, G. Ross Anderson, Jr. Student Center Registration: $40 Join the cast and director, Rob Homer-Drummond, for the play, Oedipus Rex, for our Saturday only Spring Weekender. Director Homer-Drummond will provide background into Oedipus Rex and casting information for the Anderson University performance. Dr. David Larson will share information about the era in which the play was written. He will also include information about the author, Sophocles (495 BC-405 BC), who was a famous and successful Athenian writer of tragedies in his own lifetime. Thus, Oedipus the King, also called Oedipus Tyrannos or Oedipus Rex, written around 420 BC, has long been regarded not only as Sophocles’ finest play but also as the purest and most powerful expression of Greek tragic drama. Sophocles wrote more than 100 plays and chose to make each tragedy a complete entity in itself—as a result, he had to pack all of his action into the shorter form, and this clearly offered greater dramatic possibilities. Dr. Bob Hanley, English professor, will enlighten us on Greek Mythology that will enhance the drama of the play. 2 | Lifelong Learning Institute

Robert has been a theatre educator for more than twenty years and has directed and supervised many plays including recent productions of Romeo & Juliet and Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth. He is known for his creative adaptations of classical work. He played Leonato this summer in the Anderson Shakespeare in the Park production of Much Ado About Nothing directed by David Larson. Primarily, though, he enjoys the mentoring portion of his job and the energy and inspiration that his students give to him. Dr. David Larson, Dean of The South Carolina School of the Arts and Professor of Theatre, states, “In college I was passionate about my faith and my art. During my master’s work, I was led to take a theatre position at Judson College, in Elgin, Illinois. My seven years at Judson confirmed my calling to work in the theatre as a Christ follower. I remain as passionate about this calling as I was in 1978.” David was the founding director of the Anderson Senior Follies, as well as director of Center Stage at Anderson (College) University, a professional performing arts series (1985-92). Week 4 Focus: A look at the many roles that music and the visual arts play in defining and preserving cultures. Mr. Al Darby received his Bachelor of Science degrees in History and in Geography from East Carolina University. He was awarded a M.Ed. degree from Southern Wesleyan University. He taught Social Studies, primarily World Geography, in Anderson School District Five for 32 years. He retired in June 2016 and served as an adjunct professor at Clemson University. Originally from North Carolina, he now lives in suburban Belton with his wife and border collie. GREAT DECISIONS Tuesday, April 11, 18, 25, May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 | 4:30 – 6:00 PM Vandiver Hall, Room 134 Registration: $20 | Teacher Recertification Credit Available Participants are encouraged to order the Great Decisions Briefing Book for $25 plus shipping. Having the briefing book in advance of each class allows participants to gain additional information about the topic. To order the Briefing Book, visit fpa.org or call (800) 477-5836 Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. April 11, The future of Europe: Mr. Wayne Watson The outcome of the United Kingdom referendum on EU membership sent shockwaves across the globe and caught British voters by surprise. The European Union has helped secure peace in Europe for the past 70 years. Amid a refugee crisis, lingering financial recession and the constant specter of terrorism, unity seems more imperative than ever. But the Brexit vote underscores the complexities of integrating an extremely diverse continent. April 18, Trade and politics: Mr. Al Darby The U.S. political mood toward trade has gone sour. One need look no further than the 2016 presidential contest for the popular narrative: trade means that China wins, at America’s expense. But do the numbers support that conclusion? The metrics used to gauge economic strength— Gross Domestic Product and balance of trade—have not kept up with the realities of modern manufacturing. April 25, Conflict in the South China Sea: Dr. Joyce Wood The South China Sea is a locus of competing territorial claims, and China is its most vocal claimant. Beijing’s interest has intensified disputes with other countries in the region in recent years, especially since China has increased its naval presence. Despite rising international pressure, including an unfavorable ruling by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, China staunchly defends its policies in the region.

May 2, Saudi Arabia in Transition: Mr. Mike Kay As Saudi Arabia struggles to adjust to the drastic decline in oil revenue, Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman attempts to boldly transform the country and shift more power to the younger generation. At the same time, many countries such as the U.S. point out the lack of democracy, women’s rights and human rights in Saudi Arabia, and blame its promotion of Wahhabism, an extremely conservative version of Islam, for creating jihadists. May 9, U.S. Foreign Policy and Petroleum: Dr. Joyce Wood What is the effect of U.S. petroleum security on foreign policy? For 45 years, the country has alternated between periods of energy security and insecurity, sometimes able to wield petroleum as a useful instrument of foreign policy, sometimes not. Despite the so-called “energy revolution,” the U.S. today is by no means disentangled from foreign dependence and global trends. May 16, Latin America’s political pendulum: Mr. Mike Kay The pendulum of Latin American politics is swinging rightward once again. Yet as the “pink tide” recedes, the forces of change have more to do with socioeconomics than ideology. Dramatic economic and political crises have coincided in countries like Brazil and Venezuela. Still, the final result for Latin America may be the emergence of centrist, pragmatic modes of governance, and with them, opportunities for the U.S. to improve relations. May 23, Prospects for Afghanistan and Pakistan: Dr. Joyce Wood Major internal conflict has plagued Afghanistan for four decades. The U.S., for its part, has conducted military operations in the country nearly continuously since 9/11. Today, war with the Taliban persists, and tensions between the U.S. and Pakistan have gradually deteriorated. As his time in office drew to a close, President Obama limited further withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. The incoming administration has a choice: will it maintain the status quo, completely reverse the Obama administration drawdown or withdraw completely? May 30, Nuclear Security: Mr. Wayne Watson Nuclear nonproliferation was a top priority for the Obama administration. While the Iran Deal was a diplomatic victory toward this end, major threats persist from both state and non-state actors. Countries like North Korea, Russia, and India and Pakistan continue to challenge nonproliferation efforts. The possibility that terrorists will carry out an attack using a “dirty bomb,” made from captured nuclear materials, looks increasingly real. Mr. Al Darby received his Bachelor of Science degrees in History and in Geography from East Carolina University. He was awarded a M.Ed. degree from Southern Wesleyan University. He taught Social Studies, primarily World Geography, in Anderson School District Five for 32 years before retiring. He served as an adjunct professor at Clemson University. Mr. Wayne Watson has a BA in History and M Ed. He completed Air Command and Staff College and Air War College. He is a retired Lt. Col, USAF and served as a History teacher for 20 years. Dr. Joyce Wood teaches history at Anderson University and has been instrumental in locating and archiving many historical items as part of the preparation of the Centennial History for that celebration by Anderson University 2010-2011. Mr. Mike Kay earned a Bachelor’s in Accounting from Drexel University with a minor in Communication. His interest in history was sparked by his father who kept the house filled with books and magazines on history. His Dad also wrote several books, monographs and articles about Post Office history.

LITERATURE JANE AUSTEN’S SEND-UP OF THE GOTHIC: NORTHANGER ABBEY Monday, April 3, 10, 17, 24 | 4:30-6:00PM Vandiver Hall, Room 134 | Registration: $20 | Teacher Recertification Credit Available While Northanger Abbey was Jane Austen’s first completed novel, it was published only after her death. Austen’s satire of the popular late eighteenth-century gothic novel presents the story of Catherine Morland, a naïve teenager who imagines herself the heroine of a gothic story, encountering an unknown and dangerous world. As a young woman experiencing love for the first time, though, Catherine becomes the heroine of a very different type of story. Participants are encoruaged to read Chapters 1-5 before the first class meeting. Dr. Karen Zagrodnik is a lecturer in English at Anderson University and has taught classes at the college level on Jane Austen. Her area of specialty is British literature of the long eighteenth-century. She considers herself both a Janeite and an Austenite. MEET THE INDUCTEES! Monday, March 6, 13, 20, 27 | 4:30 – 6:00 PM | Vandiver Hall, Room 134 Registration: $20 | Teacher Recertification Credit Available The South Carolina Academy of Authors (SCAA) will induct four outstanding writers native to the state in Florence in April 2017: poet Cathy Smith Bowers, historian Dan T. Carter, Washington Post columnist Jim Hoagland, and author Arthenia Bates Millican. Each week we’ll explore some of their writings, learning why they’re worthy of this prestigious honor. For the first session, participants must download “Six Poems” written by Bowers at www.storysouth.com/poetry_features/2007/09/ six_poems.html. The instructor will provide handouts for subsequent sessions. Ms. Marybeth Evans, former Community Services Coordinator for the Anderson County Library System, is a member of the Board of Governors of the South Carolina Academy of Authors. KATE CHOPIN’S THE AWAKENING Monday, May 1, 8, 15, 22 | 4:30 – 6:00 PM Vandiver Hall, Room 134 Registration: $20 | Teacher Recertification Credit Available Kate Chopin’s short novel, The Awakening (1899), is taught in so many classes. It lends itself to a variety of interpretations because it changes with each reading. It can be read as Romanticism, Naturalism, or Realism because there is ample proof to support each argument. The class will focus on Chopin’s life as well as the poetic language and imagery of her writing. Dr. Nancye McClure grew up in Mississippi, moved to SC, obtained BA in English from Erskine in 1976, MA from University of South Carolina in 1990, and Ph.D. in literature from University of Mississippi in 2001. She retired from Missouri State University, West Plains, in 2013 as Professor of English, emeritus.

SHORT STORIES TO INTEREST US Tuesday, February 7, 14, 21, 28 | 4:30 – 6:00 PM Vandiver Hall, Room 134 | Registration: $20 | Teacher Recertification Credit Available For our first class, National Book award winner Colum McCann’s short story “Everything in this Country Must” (the title story of the eponymous collection which features two stories and a novella) explores the tragedy and heartbreak of the recent Irish Troubles via the brief but tragic encounter between an Irish farmer and a British army patrol. The story’s narrator (the farmer’s young daughter) finds herself caught between childhood innocence and the fault-lines of Irish history, further exposing the deep-seated fears and distrust that continue to haunt AngloIrish relations. Dr. Jim Haughey teaches Shakespeare and 20th century British literature. His most recent publication was an essay on Irish war poets which appeared in The Oxford Handbook of 20th Century Irish Poetry (2012). He received the 2013 Michael Boles Excellence in Teaching Award at Anderson University. “Hills Like White Elephants” is one of Ernest Hemingway’s most famous and best loved stories. Although he has sometimes been criticized for his portrayal of female characters, you may feel differently this time. See if you can determine the subject of the dialogue, a word that is not even mentioned.” Mr. Henry Spann taught public school English and was an English teacher at Anderson University for 38 years. He has been fully retired since 2011. In the Ron Rash short story, “The Ascent,” we encounter Jared, a fifth grader who confronts the childhood challenges of a crush on homeroom schoolmate Lyndee Starnes while she barely recognizes him as human. At the same time, he must shoulder the adult responsibilities that come when his parents overindulge in drugs and the family must suffer the consequences. His life gets even more complicated when he makes a frightening discovery in the woods that promises to solve his problems and reveals much about his character. Come join us in this story that shines a light on Southern folk and reveals the goodness found in people as well as the dark side of humanity. Dr. Bob Hanley earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from Clemson University and the Ph.D. in English Education from the University of Georgia. In addition to teaching in higher education for thirty-six years, he has provided a variety of presentations at the local, state, and national level on topics ranging from Pat Conroy to diversity education. Active in the South Carolina Council of Teachers of English, he has served this organization in various capacities including president. Published works include book chapters, feature articles, book reviews, and poems. Dr. Margaret Wooten will pair “Greenleaf” by Flannery O’Connor with “Revelation” by Flannery O’Connor. Both stories feature O’Connor’s signature portrayal of a moment of grace, that moment when one sees himself or herself as God sees him or her and thus is open to God’s grace. Dr. Margaret Wooten, Professor of English at Anderson University, earned three degrees in English: B.A. from Wake Forest University, M.A. from Appalachian State University, and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. She has made various professional presentations and has taught college students all of her adult life.
