LITERATURE SECOND CHANCES: JANE AUSTEN’S PERSUASION Thursday, October 27, November 3, 10, 17 | 4:00-5:30 PM Vandiver Hall, Room 202 | Registration: $20; Teacher recertification credit available. Persuasion, Jane Austen’s last completed novel, explores the bittersweet experience of love lost and the possibility of love found. Anne Elliot, influenced by family and friends, rejected a young suitor only to meet him again eight years later. While marriage for a man at any age is socially acceptable, this may be her last chance. More importantly, though, this is Anne’s opportunity to right the wrong of not trusting herself to know what, and who, will make her happy. The first class will begin by discussing Chapters 1-4. Dr. Karen Zagrodnik is a lecturer of English at Anderson University and has taught college classes on Jane Austen. Her area of specialty is the long eighteenth-century British period. She considers herself both a Janeite and an Austenite. GREAT AMERICAN SHORT STORIES Monday, November 7, 14, 28, December 5 | 4:30 – 6:00 PM Vandiver Hall, Room 134 | Registration: $20; Teacher recertification credit available. Join a team of English teachers who are passionate about literature and will share their love of American short stories, introduce some great short story writers and their works, and listen to your comments about the selected American short stories each week. “The Lottery” burst on the scene in 1948, causing what has been referred to as an “incendiary” reaction from its readers. It provoked the most correspondence and telephone calls The New Yorker magazine had ever received up to that point. Mr. Henry Spann taught public school English and was an English teacher at Anderson University for 38 years. He has been fully retired since 2011. http://fullreads.com/ literature/the-lottery/ Dr. Margaret Wooten will lead a discussion on the short story, “Wakefield,” first written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and then re-written by E.L. Doctortow. The story is intriguing, and the two versions give an interesting commentary on 21st century life as compared to 19th century life. Here are the links to the stories: http://www. eastoftheweb.com/short-stories/UBooks/Wak.shtml Dr. Margaret Wooten, Professor of English at Anderson University, earned three degrees in English: B.A. from Wake Forest University, M.A. from Appalachian State University, and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. She has made various professional presentations and has taught college students all of her adult life.

Dr. Bob Hanley selected “Thank You, Ma’am” (Langston Hughes). In this short story, a young teenager discovers the hard way that you better think twice before you mess with Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. In this story by noted author Langston Hughes, Roger learns some important life lessons. This short story will be available for you at the first session. Dr. Bob Hanley serves as the Vice Provost for Academic Advising and Professor of English. He has over thirtysix years of teaching experience. His honors and awards include the Alumni Master Teacher of the Year, the President’s Award, and most recently, the 2015 Fowler- McCaskill Lifetime Achievement Award from the South Carolina Council of English Teachers. Mrs. Ann Hicks will focus on “Flight of the Snowbird” by Jean Lively. It is short, easy to read, but quite moving. It also is packed with beautiful imagery, symbolism, and other literary elements. Google to find the story on line. Mrs. Ann Hicks taught English, art, and drama in her 33 years in NC and SC. Her chief area of interest and advanced degree is in gifted education. Honors and awards include “Teacher of Excellence” by the SC Governor’s School, School and District Teacher of the Year in Anderson District Four, and School and District Teacher of the Year in Anderson School District Five.

LANGUAGES INTRODUCTION TO SPANISH Tuesday, October 11, 18, 25, November 1, 8, 15 | 4:30 – 6:00 PM Vandiver Hall, Room 202 | Registration: $20; Teacher recertification credit available. Preliminar: Greetings, introductions and goodbyes, el mundo hispano; A comer: Talk about breakfast, lunch, dinner-ordering food and beverages in a café or restaurant; De compras: Identify clothing and accessories--talk about shopping experiences; Fiestas y vacaciones: Talk about vacations, holidays and special events--express affirmative and negative ideas; De viaje: Talk about transportation, lodging and other aspects of travel--request and provide information about getting around a city or town-giving instructions. Mrs. Margaret R. Rucker received her undergraduate degree from Allen University, her M.Ed. from Clemson University and the thirty hours above the Master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. Her Master’s degree is in English education; the thirty hours above the master’s focused on Spanish studies. HISTORY SOUTH CAROLINA LEADERS IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION Monday, September 12, 19, 26, October 3| 3:30-5:00 PM | Vandiver Hall, Room 202 Registration: $20; Teacher recertification credit hours available.

WE ARE NOT ALL THE SAME PEOPLE Thursday, October 13, 20 | 4:30 – 6:30 PM | Vandiver Hall, Room 202 Registration: $20; Teacher recertification credit available.

South Carolina deserves more credit for its role in the Revolutionary War than is generally realized. Its critical place in the final outcome of the war was due to the leaders we will spotlight like the traditional heroes Francis Marion, Daniel Morgan and Nathanael Greene. We will also look at notorious British leaders like Banastre Tarleton and Lord Charles Cornwallis. Dr. Bonnie Ledbetter is a graduate of Ohio State, Western Reserve, and Tulane, where she received her Ph.D. She served on the Texas A & M history faculty and the Clemson faculty.

In a series of two sessions, the focus will be on three different subjects, all Native American. The first is “The Chief Vann House.” A presentation and discussion will be on Cherokee James Vann and his son and the Home in Chadsworth, Ga. Neither was a chief, and the house belonged to the son who was evicted. Both men would qualify as richest men in North America but led lives of war, torture, and political intrigue from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War. Next, let’s move to the Plains and begin a Dance society that swept across the plains from Omaha to the Blackfeet in Canada with tribes paying as much as 200 horses for the right to perform. We will use early B/W photograph and museum examples to show the people and regalia of this society. Finally, our next topic will be on Southern Trade silver mostly from England but some Native made that is housed by the state of Alabama in their Archives. Attention will be given to the wearing of these decorative pieces and will share some from my collection. For our second class on October 20, let’s meet in the lobby of Vandiver Hall at 4:00 PM to enjoy some authentic fry bread and honey before class. Mr. Jim Ross is a retired educator who taught for many years among the Native Americans in Oklahoma. He is a frequent contributor and speaker at conferences such as Material Culture of the Plains Plateau and Prairie in Omaha, Nebraska; Lewiston, Idaho; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Billings and Helena, Montana. He is a frequent contributor to journals.

YOU CAN’T GO TO NEW YORK (GEOGRAPHY) Wednesday, September 21, 28, October 5, 12 | 4:30 – 6:00 PM Vandiver Hall, Room 202 | Registration: $20; Teacher recertification credit available. This class will examine the basic elements of the study of Geography, with particular emphasis on Human Geography. Topics will include population issues, human-environmental relationships, cultural diffusion and acculturation, global urbanization, and resources and resource management. Discussions in class will be participantdriven, with specific topics being determined by the interests of the participants. Mr. Al Darby received his Bachelor of Science degrees in History and in Geography from East Carolina University. He was awarded a M.Ed. degree from Southern Wesleyan University. He taught Social Studies, primarily World Geography, in Anderson School District Five for 32 years before retiring in June 2016 and served as an adjunct professor at Clemson University. Originally from North Carolina, he now lives in suburban Belton with his wife and border collie. EVERYDAY LAW 101 Wednesday, October 19, 26, November 2 | 4:30 – 6:00 PM Vandiver Hall, Room 202 | Registration: $20; Teacher recertification credit available. RELIGION AND THE ARTS GOD SPEAKS THROUGH DRAMATISTS Monday, September 12, 19, 26, October 10 | 2:00 – 3:30 PM Anderson County Library, Room A | Registration: $20 Through modern drama, the sensitive ear can hear the voice of God. Often, the playwright is not aware that he is carrying God’s message in his depiction of the human condition. Yet, as we sit in the theatre listening or in our armchairs reading, the characters and the overall framework of the play make us aware of human need and of God’s concern for us in similar situations. In this four-week course, we will examine plays by four twentieth century dramatists who acquaint us with the plight of men and women much like us. You will have the chance to re-enact scenes from Eugene O’Neill, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and Neil Simon. Then we will discuss what we have seen and heard. Rev. Lawrence Webb is an avid play goer, play reader, and sometimes community theatre director. He is a minister, author, and Anderson University emeritus professor. He teaches the long-running Baraca Radio Sunday School Class from Anderson’s First Baptist Church on air at 107.7 FM and 1280 AM on Sunday, 10-11 AM, and online 24/7 at www.andersonfbc.org/baraca.

CHRISTIAN ART HISTORY Monday, October 3, 10, 17, 24 | 4:30 – 6:00 PM Vandiver Hall, Room 134 | Registration: $20 The survey of Christian art will be a journey through images beginning in the Byzantine period through our contemporary time. Learners will engage in discussion after a brief introduction to each period’s historical context and style. Of central importance to the discussion will be how the artist advances the Christian message through his or her artistic conventions and how patronage may or may not have influenced the final project. Learners will be encouraged to think critically about the utility and limitations of visual media in conveying theological themes. Mrs. Stephanie Totty Patterson is a graduate of the University of Virginia (B.A. in Art) and of Duke University with a Master of Theological Studies. She is currently Minister to Students and Families full time at Boulevard Baptist Church.
