A
dams County native Wes Minnich says, “I have always had a passion for cars.” And, this passion of his definitely shows in his work. Above & Beyond Vehicle Reconditioning, located in Bluffton, Indiana, is a 5 star-rated business providing a number of automotive services. The ribbon cutting of his new business was held on November 15, 2016. However, Wes’s journey in this field began many years ago. Before Wes was even old enough to drive, he discovered a love that would become a business opportunity and continue throughout his adult years. It all started with an auto mechanics class at South Adams High School.
Wes began detailing vehicles at the age of 14. Having a strong work ethic, as well as a natural talent for the work, he later took a job at a Chrysler dealership in Bluffton in 2000. Wes started at entry level and worked his way up, experiencing all sides of the industry. He began in detailing before moving into parts, service and sales. In 2008, Wes went to work at Expert Transmission, gaining even more knowledge on automotive services and details. In order to launch his own business, Wes traded services for an inexpensive minivan that would enable him to transport chemicals. His entrepreneurial dream quickly materialized into a successful business.

Wes says the main goal for the time being is to provide professional, dealership-quality detailing. In the future, he might branch out and establish his own dealership. As a local business owner, Wes likes to be involved in the community. His company sponsors baseball teams, along with a car show coming up this July. When Wes isn’t working at the shop, he is usually operating his other business. He goes straight from work at Above & Beyond to Pizza King in Geneva. Wes and his wife Helen took over the wellknown restaurant in January of 2015. His duties at Pizza King include: managing employees, making sure everything is running smoothly, all supplies have been ordered, ensuring the coolers maintained, and seeing that customers are enjoying the famous smorgasbord and the fabulous pizza.
Time management has been important in dividing Wes’ attention between both businesses, but he says it can be done while still enjoying life. In his free time, Wes enjoys being with his family and vacationing at Lake James with his wife of 17 years and their two children, Deven (14) and Dana (9). S
ometimes a comment made in passing is stored away somewhere in our brains and pops up on a future date to make a big change in someone’s life. Brooks and Barb Fetters know this experience firsthand. In 1859, Samuel and Elizabeth Purviance built a house on the south side of the river in Huntington, Indiana. It became a hub of hospitality. For the next 105 years, the Purviance family lived and entertained in the house on the hill. A local church purchased the home in 1965, and it was used as a worship center, fellowship hall and even a haunted house. When wrecking balls threatened in 1987, Gene Gernand purchased the house and used it for various businesses.
In 2013, Huntington Mayor Brooks Fetters was on a tour of historical homes. Someone made a quick comment to Brooks that he and his wife, Barb, would be the perfect couple to live there. That evening, Brooks mentioned it to his wife, and they never spoke of it again. Fast forward to the fall of 2014. “I was ready to do something different,” remembers Barb, a registered nurse of 30 years. “I didn’t know what it was, but I wanted to do something different.” She recalls turning to her husband and saying, “Help me figure this out.” It was then that Brooks remembered their conversation about the Purviance House.

“We called the owner up and asked if it was for sale. We made an offer on it, and she accepted it,” says Barb. “We sold our house after just 28 days in November and December,” Brooks adds. “We worked hard, and God took over.” In a short five months, the Fetters converted the house into both a residence and a bed and breakfast. They added three bathrooms, a kitchen and a garage. Three guest suites with private baths were created. Great care was taken to preserve the original feel of the house. “It needed that loving touch,” Barb says. “The wooden floors are original. All I did was mop them on my hands and knees with Murphy soap, the old-fashioned way.” “The shutters, floors, hardware and the fireplaces … it’s all the original,” Brooks proclaims proudly. Guests are amazed by the craftsmanship that went into the original house.
The Fetters have simply refurbished many things. “We’ve been able to bring back everything to its original state,” Brooks says. With the help of Indiana Landmarks, the Fetters have been able to pick period correct paint colors. There have been a few major changes. Brooks and Barb gutted and replaced the kitchen and put in laundry facilities, something the original house did not have. “We just made it functional,” Barb explains. “It took about a year for it to feel like home but, boy, it is a comfortable home now.” “It’s the perfect kind of house to live in, but to share, too,” Brooks adds. The Fetters have their own private suite upstairs, above the kitchen, in the old servant’s quarters. “We don’t use the grand staircase in the foyer, but we go up the narrow steep stairs off the kitchen,” Barb says. “It is perfectly situated to give us privacy and allow our guests privacy.”

The reasons for staying at the house are as varied as the places the guests come from.
Hospitality is the corner stone of The Purviance House. The Fetters’ mission is simple.
“We do get a lot of university traffic, business traffic, but also people coming in celebrating birthday, anniversaries, or weddings,” Barb says.
“This house is all about hospitality. Helping people experience Huntington’s great hospitality. Having people feel welcome to the city,” Barb says. “We want people to enjoy the house, the city, the county, and just the people that call Huntington home.”
“Every once in a while, we get people at the backdoor at 8 o’clock, wanting to know if we have a room. Sometimes we do, sometimes we don’t.” Guests are free to roam the house, or simply stay in their suites. “It’s amazing how many people enjoy sitting out here [in the living room]. It’s just their space,” Barb comments. “And when they are out here, they almost always like to include us. That’s the fun part,” adds Brooks. “We’re available and accessible, but we are not obtrusive.”

am Bergdall took advantage of many opportunities over the past twenty years to learn the finer points of the apparel embroidery business, while also dabbling in screen printing, decals, banners, wall graphics and the like. “I’ve been in the business with different companies for 20 years,” says the owner of the new-to-Decatur business, Bear’s Den Embroidery & More. When Pam learned that Hotcakes in Bluffton, Indiana—where she’d been employed the last three years—would be closing its doors in May of 2017 with the retirement of the owners, she faced a dilemma. “It was either look for a new job, or go into business for myself.”
Pam made the decision to launch her own company in the field that she not only loved, but one in which she had gained a level of expertise and a recognized reputation. The next decision was where to locate the business. Pam says she and her husband Don concluded, “We live in Decatur and thought it would be nice to have it close to home.” The final decision—what to name the business—came easily to Pam. “Anyone who knows me, knows that I like and collect bears. I knew the name had to have the word bears in it.” She’s also fond of visiting Tennessee, where her favorite species, the black bear, is common.

A location on Second Street became available, and Pam and Don purchased the building in May of 2016. With the help of family members, they restored the flooring in the portion of the building that would house their store back to the original floors. Pam continued working at Hotcakes, and the Bergdalls spent many late evenings and weekends making the necessary improvements, taking advantage of their own and family members’ carpentry skills. On August 19, 2016, Bear’s Den Embroidery and More opened for business. “I bought the embroidery equipment from Hotcakes,” Pam says, pointing out the electronic automatic embroidery machines. Business logos and all manner of patterns are digitized via an embroidery program on the company computer. It’s the designing and application of these embroidery designs that Pam enjoys most. Apparel featuring the names, logos, and mascots for area schools make up a large portion of the ready-made inventory in the store’s showroom. Letter jackets are also available. A huge “orders” board on the wall keeps the staff on track. Many of the embroidery and heat transfer orders are for custom apparel decoration work that covers the gamut, from business logos on polo shirts or jackets, to hats and t-shirts for local youth sports teams to baby blankets and onesies commemorating births and first birthdays.

“People love personalization. We can personalize almost anything, even ties and suspenders,” Pam shares. “Can you do something like this?” customers ask, often toting a picture of a design or customization they hope Pam can create. “That’s the fun part of the job.” The “more” portion of the business offers a variety of signage applications, including window and vehicle/equipment decals, banners, and lettering for corrugated plastic signs. Vehicle or window decals can be self-applied by the customer, or Bear’s Den staff can install them. Basic alterations are also available for any type of apparel. “We had people asking us three to four times a week to hem jeans, put in a zipper, or some other type of alteration.” So, Pam gladly added those services at The Bear’s Den. “We’ve taken off so fast,” says Pam with a slight shake of her head and a big smile. mouth circulated the news that the experienced embroidery designer and signage creator had opened her own shop. Past satisfied customers followed Pam to The Bear’s Den. While the winter months tend to bring a slow-down for this type of business, she reports they noticed only a slight decrease this past January through March. The first signs of spring brought the usual flurry of orders for youth sports team apparel. “I hope to expand more into wall graphics,” Pam notes. Graphics cut from a special material that will not damage drywall have become a trend in home décor, one that Pam sees as an area of expansion for the business. As they catch their breath from the business’s promising launch, Pam and Don are also considering the addition of screen-printing for apparel and signage options. While Pam once held aspirations to be an elementary school art teacher, she is content to let her

artistic flare blossom in the area of apparel decoration and signage— an outlet that has served her well for two decades and counting. Currently, one side of the building on Second Street is rented by DZ Gaming, while The Bear’s Den occupies the other side. Future plans for the 4000-square foot upstairs include several apartments. The operating of the business continues to be a family affair. Don handles much of the heat transfer work, as well as the bookkeeping, in addition to holding a full-time job. The Bergdalls’ daughter Jessica, who recently became the county sanitarian, helps out, and a couple of friends are employed at the new establishment, as well. There’s plenty to keep them all busy.
The Bergalls’ goal at the end of the day? Pam says, “We want our customers to be satisfied.” The Bear’s Den maintains very user-friendly business hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays; and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. ind a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.� --Mark Twain Penny Wiseman has always been drawn to visual arts and designing. After graduating from Wapakoneta High School, she went to Raleigh, North Carolina to live with her great-aunt and study fashion design. While living and studying there, she learned quite a bit that didn't come from books and classrooms. When a local businesswoman decided to close her interior design business, Penny did a lot of muscle work for her, helping pack

up the tools of her trade. Around the same time, Penny's aunt took it into her head to educate her niece about visual arts and travel. As a result, Penny left her ideas of fashion design behind and decided to pursue a career of interior design. "Those early experiences in North Carolina really helped push me toward interior design and art," Penny explains. "Fashion designing just didn't mean as much to me as interior design had begun to mean." She returned to the Midwest and attended Ohio State University and then Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW),
where she received her degree in interior design (through Purdue). While there, she met the man who would become her husband, and, together, they found and purchased a house that would be an inspiration, as well as home.
"Before I did my first window treatment, I had never actually made draperies! I learned quickly and did all the work myself," Penny remembers. "Later, I worked with local seamstresses, who were artists themselves."
"The family of David Humphreys Miller, the Van Wert-born painter, first owned our house on south Washington Street," Penny says. "The second owner was Dorothy Jones and her husband; she was also an artist.
More jobs continued to come to her. Never using any advertising beyond than word-of-mouth, Penny built a business helping people create beautiful living spaces. For many years, window treatments were the main focus, until the recession of 2008.
“The attic has a wonderful studio space, and the English Tudor Revival style of its design was beautiful and inspiring. We signed the papers for it as quickly as we could!" In the meantime, Penny and her husband started a family, and soon, she began to wonder if she could do something to help earn a living for the family. In 1994, Penny began doing window treatments for close friends—including draperies, valances, curtains, and blinds.
"People seemed to have other things to spend money on," Penny reflects. "I turned more to color and design consultation and redoing entire rooms, rather than just windows or carpets." With her background in historical design and architecture, Penny also works with antiques and collectibles. "I'm a big fan of eBay," Penny says. "I've been able to purchase many pieces that are simply gorgeous or very unusual and use them in room

renovations." Her attic space/ office has become the storeroom for many eclectic pieces that are awaiting a permanent home in the area. As a rule, customers come to Penny through other customers and friends. "I first set up an appointment to view the room or rooms the client would like to redecorate," Penny explains. "I interview the client to determine his or her likes and dislikes, I make measurements, and I share the pros and cons of the space. “The shape and dimensions of the space will often determine what sort of arrangement we can do with furniture and, also, can suggest different color plans."
Although she orders in furniture, as well as fabrics and accessories for the rooms, Penny does try to work with what the client already owns. "Of course, I will try my best to include pieces and colors the room has, but I also try to be as clear as possible about what my recommendations are." In order to create both an artistic and a livable space, Penny does space planning and will work with contractors who are doing physical changes to a house. "Part of my job is to give my opinions on what will and will not work in a room, based on what the customer wants the room to be and do. I work directly with contractors to make sure measurements match and furniture fits in new rooms and renovated spaces."
After gathering ideas, including photos, swatches, and color palettes, Penny makes a second appointment to present what she feels are the best ways to put the room together, based on her knowledge of color and design, as well as the customer’s own preferences. From then, the job is all about ordering fabrics, furniture, and accessories, and, sometimes, creating draperies and rugs. There may be other appointments needed as new ideas and pieces come across her desk that she thinks may set the room apart. On her website, you can view several rooms in Van Wert area homes that Penny has designed. She works both with residential spaces and public spaces, including the offices of Roger Okuley, DDS; the entrance and human resource offices of Central Mutual Insurance (located just
across the street from her home); and, even the draperies that hang behind the judge in the county courthouse. "I now have grandchildren, and I don't work as much as I used to," Penny says. "However, I'll continue working as long as possible. When your job is your passion, it's not something you can just stop doing. I'll probably be doing design work for many years yet."

ess than ten years after the Revolutionary War ended, U.S. troops and a large confederation of Native American warriors clashed in a bloody battle on the banks of the Wabash River. Natives destroyed the hodgepodge U.S. Army, composed of militiamen, raw recruits and 180-day specials.
She explains, “The states of the new country were not interested in forming a strong, united country.” The citizens were resistant to a strong central government and national army. “Their histories told them that countries’ strong armies inevitably were used on their own people. But, the Battle of the Wabash changed all of that.”
Were it not for the historic defeat in what is present-day Fort Recovery, Ohio, the United States of America might have been quite different than the nation we live in today. Nancy Knapke, who serves as Site Manager at the Fort Recovery State Museum, calls the Battle of the Wabash “a watershed moment in United States history.”
Nancy adds, “President George Washington knew at this point, the very future of the United States was at stake. Realizing they might lose all they had fought for in the Revolutionary War, the states came together and agreed to form a strong union, complete with a real United States Army. This was the turning point in U.S. history.

“General Anthony Wayne was put in charge of this new army and, modeling it after the old Roman legions, he created the beginning of what would become the strongest military force in the world. The Battle of Fort Recovery in 1794 proved the viability of the army, led to the signing of the Treaty of Greenville in 1795, and ultimately proved the U.S. would survive.” After retiring as an elementary principal, Nancy took the position at Fort Recovery State Museum so she could continue in education—in this case, about the history of her community. “I had always loved history and loved telling the Fort Recovery story,” she says. “I have a passion for the community of Fort Recovery and saw this as a way to give back and to interest others in our history.” The Fort Recovery Historical Society first displayed artifacts in the balcony of the local public library sometime after it was built in 1938. When the library relocated in 1968, the state historical society took possession of the facility, planning a military museum that would commemorate the historic post-Revolutionary War battles that took place nearby. The Fort Recovery State Museum was completely renovated in 2010.

Other features of the Fort Recovery State Museum include its Native American Alcove, historic local photographs of the old town of Fort Recovery, an awards display, and a gift shop/book store. Guided tours are available by appointment and can be tailored to fit the specific needs and schedule of guests. Tours can even be arranged outside of regular seasonal hours. The Fort Recovery State Museum receives nearly $7,000 a year from the Ohio History Connection, in addition to admission fees and gift shop receipts. But, Nancy says, “The most significant support comes from patrons of the museum.” More than 150 patrons have contributed over $15,000 annually for the past two years. “This is the main funding that allows the museum to achieve its vision, mission and goals.” Because of these donations, the historical society has been able to make the facility entrance and exterior
grounds handicap-accessible, renovate restrooms, and make other needed repairs and updates. “It also provides funding for all of the museum’s special events,” Nancy points out, “including special monthly speakers.” The museum hosts guest speakers on Sunday afternoon once a month from May through September. History is strewn across the village of Fort Recovery. According to Nancy, there are many other sites of historic interest in Fort Recovery, including the reconstructed fort, two log cabins, a walk-by museum, and Franke Walkway—all located on the grounds of the state museum. Visitors might also be interested in seeing: the General Butler Marker, designating the spot where General Richard Butler was killed and scalped in the Wabash battle; Fort Recovery Monument, which marks the burial site of nearly 1,000
soldiers and officers killed in battle; Pioneer Cemetery and the Samuel McDowell Monument there; Indian Point, a site that honors the Native American tribes who fought on the Wabash and later signed the Greenville Treaty; colorful downtown murals depicting local historical events; and, Krenning Historical Park, which connects the Fort Recovery State Museum to Main Street.

t's a brave new world we live in today. What was yesterday's science fiction is today's reality, not just in our personal lives but also in business. Any business that wishes to grow and remain profitable in the 21st century has to become "cloud-savvy." Josh joined the company in 2014 after working with new technology on his family's farm. With public access to the cloud a fact, the next concern for a business is security and privacy. This is especially true of wireless technology, which many businesses now utilize. Essential Solutions will work with each business' network to make sure it is totally secure, and they will continue to audit security issues periodically. The very technology that Essential Solutions sells to businesses enables it to provide immediate customer service. "We used to have technicians out in the field working on hardware and software problems," Darin shared. "There were a lot of miles put on company vehicles! “Nowadays, we have the ability to remotely work with clients' devices to uncover problems, such as
hardware issues, software issues, or outside intrusions such as viruses or malware. Our technicians no longer need to go to the client's physical address to work on problems. Some of them even work from their homes, virtually doing service calls." Essential Solutions uses a "ticketing" system. A client needing technical support simply opens an online "ticket" on the ES website. Each ticket is given a unique number which then can be tracked online for progress and solutions. The history of support requests is kept in a searchable archive for the client to use. In this way, support requests are streamlined, and customers can receive immediate support any time of the day or night. Questions that pop up when you consider the state of current technology and the speed of its evolution are: Where is this technology leading us? What might be the next step?
When Darin considers these questions, he smiles and responds, "I believe the Internet, as we first thought it, will cease to exist. Instead, just as the technology of indoor plumbing, electricity, and telephone communications became part of the background of our lives, the Internet or cloud will be such a part of our daily lives that we will cease to marvel at it or treat it as something special or new. In fact, this is already true for the generation of children growing up now.
