omen empowering women is the story behind I Am More Scarsdale — an exciting and unique retail space for clothing, jewelry and accessories in the Village Center that offers, as the name suggests … more. The “more” is the reason smart women are supporting the effort by the two Scarsdale entrepreneurs — Marcy Berman-Goldstein and Abbey Solomon — behind the grand plan. The “more” of I Am More Scarsdale is the concept that clothing builds confidence, makes women feel strong, and makes them feel great about themselves by looking great. It’s all about the know-how. How to pair jeans with tees, cashmere with leather, scarves, bags, and hats — that turn off-the-rack into on-the-go — and topped off with just the right jewelry for the finishing touch. The savvy co-owners have at their fingertips the ability to help their customers dress up or down: from casual to chic, informal to elegant, and day to night. But clothing is just the beginning at I Am More Scarsdale. Our customers are women and many of our designers are women. And then there are the relevant women’s issues: the philanthropy, and the giving back to support women’s causes that sets I Am More Scarsdale apart. The store holds informational events focusing on women’s wellness and donates a percentage of proceeds to relevant philanthropic organizations. In addition, I Am More Scarsdale collaborates with many local charities throughout the year for various Shop & Share events. It’s a win-win: great clothing for a great cause. I Am More Scarsdale is not just another retail store filling the former Scarsdale Childs Play space. Like its predecessor, it is packed with merchandise, offering the variety to please any and all customers. It may be a small store, but it has a big heart. Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Also open Sundays, October through December, from 11 a.m. to 4.pm., and always by appointment.

hy does a toothache always develop when your regular dental practice is closed? Why does a tooth break on a Sunday? Emergencies never happen when it’s convenient. Urgent Care Dental is the answer to this dilemma. Scarsdale resident Dr. Scott Loeser opened Urgent Care Dental to offer after-hours care to all in need of immediate attention for dental emergencies. No appointments are necessary. Walk-ins are welcome. This state-of-the-art, green, dental facility is staffed by board-certified dentists and a professional team experienced in emergency dentistry, who provide emergency dental services for children and adults, seven days a week, including holidays. The of-

fice can handle broken or knocked-out teeth, abscessed teeth, tooth pain, oral or tooth infections, injuries to the mouth and lips, lost fillings or crowns, and problems following dental work. Previously, those with dental emergencies would need to wait for an appointment with their dentists or head to a hospital emergency room, which oftentimes is ill-equipped to handle dental issues. A resource for patients and dentists alike, Urgent Care Dental serves the public by providing a place for people to get the care they need — when they need it. Urgent Care Dental: When it just can’t wait. Hours: Open seven days a week. Monday through Friday, from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Interior design should reflect the client’s personality and needs — not the whims of the designer. That philosophy is key to the success of the Blair Interiors Group, led by Linda Blair, ASID, who has served an impressive array of Scarsdale and Westchester clients seeking her creative eye, expertise and professionalism in the art of aesthetically pleasing environments. Whether you’re looking for a new or enhanced kitchen or bath, space planning, new furnishings and arrangements, custom cabinetry, or augmented lighting, the Blair Interiors Group “pulls it together and makes it happen,” Blair says — always to each client’s satisfaction and delight. Linda Blair, a longtime Scarsdale resident, understands the village culture and the high quality expectations of its residents. In addition to serving her clients, Blair was a 15-year member and former chairman of the village’s Board of Architectural Review, created a showhouse at the Scarsdale Woman’s Club, and provided design services for the popular Scott Room at the Scarsdale Public Library. achel Uchitel took a risk five years ago when she opened Wyatt Lily in New York City. “I wanted to create a place to shop that was different,” she said, “a place with items not found elsewhere, a place where well-known brands are paired with not-so-usual offerings.” And guess what: New York magazine named Wyatt Lily Best Children’s Store and Best Baby Gifting. And now, happily for local moms and kids, Wyatt Lily has come to Scarsdale. When you see frilly paired with New York chic, comfortable paired with trendy, pinks with purples and sparkles, you’ll recognize the Wyatt Lily look. How about fun, statement-making T-shirts while you wait? Or a tutu? It all works. Concierge baby gifting is a specialty of the shop. Talk to Rachel and her team about this popular shop-at-home service. Wyatt Lily will put together a gift box that’s specially chosen for the newborn, then wrapped and delivered. As one mom put it, “Of all the presents my baby received, the Wyatt Lily gift box was the best.” Wyatt Lily, named for Rachel’s daughter, offers carefully curated clothing and accessories for newborns through size 7 for boys, and newborn through size 16 for girls, with special attention to tweens in sizes 7 to 14. Yes, trendy moms are wearing Wyatt Lily, too. Tastemaker Rachel gives shoppers a reason to come to her store. Hours: Open seven days a week. Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday to 5 p.m.

hen the Parkway Coffee Shop opened in 1961, gasoline was 27 cents a gallon, eggs were 30 cents a dozen, Alan Shepard had made the first U.S. space flight, and Pampers introduced the first disposable diaper. That was then and, clearly, much has changed — including some aspects of the restaurant itself. For instance, the Parkway Coffee Shop is now the Parkway Café. But the Cucolo family still operates the popular restaurant. It is still the go-to place for great breakfast and lunch food in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere in the heart of the Village Center. And even though it’s not a diner (still correcting some patrons), the Parkway has that nostalgic, comfortable diner feeling that has kept generations of villagers returning —now bringing their children and grandchildren. The menu items are a hit with regulars and visitors alike, who appreciate the Parkway Café’s new California influence — especially the avocado and sprouts toppings — also the café’s famous muffins and sandwiches, and the gourmet omelets and salads. “People go crazy for them,” Robert Cucolo says. By the way, don’t miss the fun of omelets named after Scarsdalians of note. Maybe one will be named after you … Whether you choose a booth, counter stools, or the seasonal outdoor seating area, choose the Parkway Café for the food, the fun, and the familiarity of a well-loved Scarsdale institution, where people can meet, greet and eat. Hours: Open seven days a week. Monday through Saturday, from 7:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

New things are happening at Kids’ B.A.S.E. and The Little School (KBLS). Our new Tower Garden by Juice Plus is a vertical, aeroponic, indoor growing system that encourages vegetables, herbs, flowers, and many fruits to grow three times faster than with conventional gardening. And with grow lights, the gardening season becomes a year-round activity for our children. The Tower Garden comes right into the classroom so that the children can actually witness growth spurts, and pick and taste the vegetables as they ripen. Also new, KBLS is one of the first early childhood programs in Westchester to participate in a school-wide implementation of the Pyramid Model, which promotes the social and emotional development of young children. Pyramid’s leaders have introduced the KBLS staff to methods that build strong relationships, develop supportive and nurturing environments; teach social skills, empathy and emotional vocabulary; and provide individualized support when necessary — all in the context of the child’s day-to-day learning experiences. We invite your children to be a part of the KBLS day program, and the enriching new additions.

As a parent of young children, Melissa DiCostanzo looked for a nursery school where her children could make friends, develop skills for learning in fun and creative ways, and experience the world around them in a warm and nurturing atmosphere. She chose The Scarsdale Congregational Church Nursery School. So captivated by the happiness her own children had felt there and the welcoming opportunities for parents to become involved in the school’s administration and programs, she became a teacher at the school and now is its director. “My heart is invested in this school and in each child who comes here,” says Melissa, a former elementary school teacher with a master’s in special education. The school offers programs for 2-, 3-, and 4-year-olds. Its classrooms offer a range of activity centers plus special teachers for music, creative movement, Spanish and theater — all designed to inspire new interests appropriate for each age group. iana White, founding artistic director of the Scarsdale Ballet Studio (SBS), is thrilled to be celebrating the school’s 26th anniversary. A former leading ballerina of the New York City Ballet, dance has been her life’s passion since she was 3 years old. Sharing her love of ballet and her professional experience with people of all ages is her mission in Westchester. Now a sought-after international master teacher and Balanchine specialist, Diana fosters an atmosphere of encouragement, dedication and camaraderie at her school. She has assembled a world-class faculty, providing the traditional classical ballet training and coaching that enables students to achieve their fullest potential. SBS has a proud history of alumni who have gone on to dance in major ballet companies and who are regularly accepted to elite dance conservatories and colleges. But Diana and her team are just as proud of their hundreds of graduates who succeed in a great variety of professions and for whom ballet is still a significant part of their lives. Beyond extolling the rewards and benefits of ballet training for children, from their early through teen years, Diana is impassioned about the physical, cognitive and emotional benefits of ballet classes for adults — both young and the not-so-young. SBS welcomes absolute beginners through experienced dancers and will soon host classes for Parkinson’s patients. It’s never too early or too late to start dancing! Creative ballet, technique, pointe, partnering, character, and conditioning classes take place in spacious professional studios. SBS offers several performing opportunities, including an annual “Nutcracker” at the Performing Arts Center at Purchase College.

According to Bram Lewis, artistic director of the Schoolhouse Theater — the longest-running regional equity theater in Westchester — “We are the little engine that could.” Nine shows that were originally produced at this charming, 99-seat theater have traveled to off-Broadway venues. What that means for Westchester audiences is that high-quality, professional theater — often staged by Broadway directors — is conveniently available, with plenty of free parking. For instance, earlier this year the Schoolhouse produced “Love Linda, The Life of Mrs. Cole Porter,” directed by Richard Maltby Jr. The second main stage production, “A Croton Falls Christmas,” will run from Dec. 14 through Dec. 23; and a brand-new play about Henri Matisse, “The Color of Light,” written by Jessie Kornbluth, will debut on April 4, 2019. Tickets for these shows, plus one-night-only entertainments by blues guitarist Marc Black (Nov. 3); LoHud Comedy (Nov. 9); word-play punster Richard Lederer’s one-man show, “Verbivore” (Nov. 19); and a June surprise, Bram Lewis said, make a Schoolhouse Theater season subscription a cultural activity must. Hours: Call the box office or email for more information and ticket sales.

From their waking moments, 2- 3- and 4-year-olds are full of energy. That’s one reason parents are elated when they see the new, two-level, multisensory playground at the Hitchcock School. Plus, the school also has a huge indoor gym to provide the physical activity kids need in bad weather. And that’s just the start of the play-based learning experiences at the school, which is licensed by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. Here in the school’s nurturing and loving environment, under the care of professional early childhood educators, children are exposed to music, art, science, nature, and the world around them. Their language skills improve with a focus on expressing themselves, listening to others, and forming their letters and numbers as part of kindergarten readiness. A diversity of cultures and languages opens children’s eyes to the global community. And an active parents’ association keeps moms and dads involved in the school’s activities. Special needs children welcome. Programs for toddlers. Enrichment for all. he New Choral Society, under the direction of Dr. John T. King, celebrates its 25th season of presenting outstanding classical choral music to the audiences of Scarsdale and the surrounding communities. The all-auditioned, 48-member chorus will perform a season of choral masterpieces with works by Handel, Verdi and Beethoven, accompanied by an orchestra of some of the best musicians New York has to offer, as well as soloists of international fame. The season opens on Friday, Nov. 30, with an 8 p.m. performance of Handel’s Messiah Part I, with selections from Parts II and III, at Hitchcock Presbyterian Church, 6 Greenacres Ave., Scarsdale. This talented chorus calls the acoustically renowned sanctuary at Hitchcock Church home, and audiences who attend these masterful choral concerts marvel at the quality of their work. This season promises to be no different. The season opener will be repeated on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 3 p.m. On January 27, at 8 p.m., the orchestra will be showcased in An Evening of Chamber Music, featuring an eclectic program of chamber music in this intimate setting. Also featured will be a chamber orchestra work commissioned by the New Choral Society and written by accomplished cellist, Eliot T. Bailen. On March 10, the chorus will present Verdi’s masterful work “Messa da Requiem.” To end the season, the program on May 5, 2019 will feature one of the most famous finales of all times, Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” from Symphony No. 9. t’s been three years now since Prudential Centennial Realty and TriCrest Realty were acquired by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England Properties and became part of the newly formed Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Westchester Properties (BHHS). BHHS is part of the legendary Berkshire Hathaway family of companies. Industry veteran Mark Nadler, a familiar and respected name in Scarsdale and in real estate for more than 30 years, leads the Scarsdale and Larchmont offices. Scarsdale’s real estate buyers and sellers have never been in better hands. The Berkshire Hathaway name is synonymous with its leader, Warren Buffet, whose expertise and business acumen are unparalleled in today’s marketplace. Blue chip investors who have trusted his wisdom have flourished, just as real estate investors in Scarsdale can do no better than to trust the agents working under the Berkshire Hathaway name. Working out of the company’s four Westchester offices located in Scarsdale, Larchmont, Eastchester and Rye, these agents are as committed to excellence as the famous Mr. Buffet, who would have it no other way. Whatever your real estate interest — residential, commercial, corporate relocation, equestrian, waterfront living — BHHS will provide you with the kind of exceptional service that leads to successful and satisfying closings. Our clients tell us that in their real estate dealings, agents from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices

provide “the best and most innovative services they have ever experienced.” Constantly growing and evolving, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England Properties recently announced the expansion of its franchise network into the London market by signing an agreement with luxury estate agency Kay & Co. The signing marks the second global franchisee of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, following that of Rubina Real Estate of Berlin, in May. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England Properties/Westchester Properties continues its strategic expansion in the Northeast under the leadership of CEO Candace Adams, giving them a total of 55 offices, with nearly 1,800 agents. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Westchester Properties also cares deeply about their community and is consistently giving back. For the third consecutive year, BHHS has hosted a fundraising event to benefit the Sunshine Kids, a nonprofit organization that helps children who are being treated for cancer. Last year, we raised more than $25,000 for the charity. All proceeds will be used to provide the most exciting activities, trips and events — free of charge — for as many young cancer patients as possible. To work with the best in the industry, contact any of our local offices — in Scarsdale, Larchmont, Eastchester and Rye — or visit bhhsWestchester.com. Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment.

Ruffled Feathers Gourmet Rotisserie, the popular takeout spot, is now entering its 28th year, and its delicious prepared foods have become standard fare in most homes in and around Scarsdale. Owners Ken and George specialize in preparing healthy and low-fat foods using the best and freshest ingredients available. As a child, Dr. Samantha Slotnick struggled with vision problems, as do many of her patients today. Her personal experiences led her to the unique field of behavioral optometry, which blends art and science to enhance vision function. In her practice, Dr. Slotnick and her caring team apply a holistic approach to the treatment of common visual problems as well as more complex areas that interfere with how patients see the world around them and function within it. They offer highly effective nonsurgical treatment for many visual issues, such as lazy eye, crossed eyes, double vision, as well as vision problems that masquerade as — or exacerbate — reading and learning disabilities and attention disorders. Dr. Slotnick’s academic training, independent research in the eye/brain connection, and long experience with children and adults facing issues with sports performance, handwriting, reading comprehension, math, problem-solving skills, and other areas that impact academic and personal success have placed her at the forefront of this visual discipline. Her expertise, treatment strategies and successes in vision rehabilitation are sought after by other optometrists and clinicians as well as patients. Hours: By appointment.

Rob’s book, “Uniquely Normal: Tapping the Reservoir of Normalcy to Treat Autism,” with the foreword by Temple Grandin, is a great resource for parents with a child on the autism spectrum, and available on Amazon.com. Here’s what people are saying: “Bernstein’s methodology, developed after years of experience in the present educational system, demonstrates a revolutionary cognitive approach to autism that departs from current practice. It is a must read for all parents and professionals dealing with children with autism.” — Douglas P. By 2060, as the nation’s 76 million baby boomers age, 9.3 million will be living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, and another 75 million will be candidates for the disease. They deserve to live with dignity. This is the mission of My Second Home, an award-winning adult day program of Family Services of Westchester in which those struggling with mind-robbing conditions benefit from physical activity, mental stimulation and social contact — at an affordable price. Trained professionals and volunteers encourage the participants to take part in offerings that include music, fitness, discussion groups and other happenings at the centers. Unique to My Second Home is the intergenerational aspect of the program in which participants interact with youngsters from the Mount Kisco Child Care Center, and Universal Pre-K in White Plains, with both age groups reaping the benefits of the connections that result. Transportation to and from the centers, a la carte breakfast, and a hot lunch round out the day. Tour the centers. See how My Second Home brings meaning to isolated lives, and respite for caregivers. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and selected Saturdays.

Where do they find this stuff? Two guys who love comics, punk rock records and books, and horror — lots of horror — started collecting maybe 22 years ago, and now they’ve put it all together in one place — NYHC Comics. A hobby has grown into a business, and serious collectors looking for the rare and in-demand, as well as the just-curious looking for fun, are having a blast checking out the inventory — comic book and movie characters, toys, masks, vinyl records, and statues. The stash gets bigger every week. “We love horror,” says Lee Farrelly, who with his partner, Debo Da Pro, opened this amazing place two years ago. Are you into zombies? How about Freddy Krueger? Maybe Spider Man for the kids? Whatever pops in pop culture, NYHC has it. “Come on in, and let’s talk comics,” they say. Hours: Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday to 10 p.m., Sunday to 5 p.m.

It’s the call every mother dreads: “Your child has head lice.” No worries. Anna Albano-Krosche, the Lice Lady of Westchester, can come to the rescue 365 days a year, “because lice is always an emergency.” Anna is Westchester’s original head lice removal expert. “I’ve been in business since 1998, and I’ve treated over 10,000 heads,” says Anna. She is the area’s only lice removal specialist with a freestanding salon. She also makes house calls. Anna frequently travels to schools and camps to do lice checks and to give presentations on head lice prevention. “I’ve been through this with my own children and myself, and I relate 100 percent to everybody who comes in,” she says. A client’s head is examined under a magnification light, then is given a 20minute, all-natural enzyme-based shampoo. Nits are combed from the hair, then the hair is rinsed, blown dry and rechecked. Clients leave the salon with a homework sheet, including instructions on how to “delouse your house.”

ath is a beautiful language — when you get it, understand it, and are successful solving its problems and equations. Now, thanks to the Mathnasium Method, kids are learning not to fear math, but to embrace it. Kids struggling with their math homework are finding their aha moments at Mathnasium, where experienced tutors turn math into a game that’s fun and engaging. It’s where kids are learning that math concepts are “really cool stuff,” according to Mathnasium owner Shane Bland, who says he was “OK as a math student,” but now sees how easy math can be. After an initial assessment to see where students are in their math proficiency, they begin working with Mathnasium instructors, specially trained to teach the method developed by Larry Martinek, who spent 40 years designing, developing and refining the Mathnasium Method, based on his extensive experience teaching math to kids. Whether problems with math surface in elementary school, middle school or high school, Mathnasium can bridge the gap between rote memorization and a true understanding of how math works. The success of the method is based on an approach that is age and developmentally appropriate for students, and based on what they already know and need to learn. As Shane Bland explains it, think about having a personal trainer in a gymnasium; at Mathnasium, you have a personal trainer in math. “I believe in the Mathnasium Method,” Shane says, “because I love seeing children succeed.” Hours: White Plains Road: Monday through Thursday, from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Central Avenue: Monday through Thursday, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m., Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.

The shop has an exquisite selection of jewelry as well, many of which are handmade by local artisans, such as bracelets by The Grand Strand Co. Necklaces and earrings start at $60 and strands start at $30. Stone and mineral pieces have a full range of price points, starting at $30. Please follow @archminerals on Instagram and visit Architectural Minerals & Stone on Facebook. Hours: Open seven days a week, generally from 12:30 to 6 p.m.

Sideli Tile & Stone has quickly become known for its unique, customer-centric approach. A husband-and-wife team, Megan and William first opened their doors in September 2017. Their Main Street showroom in Dobbs Ferry was designed with the goal of forming a personal connection with each client. A window nook with comfy chairs for browsing design books awaits. There’s a marble bar for laying out tile samples and a wide inventory that is artfully staged around the store for your viewing pleasure. They carefully listen to their customers and their tile needs and desires, and piece together a wonderful experience for each and all. “We help customers find the look they are envisioning, but most importantly, our team guides our clients to what is functional and complementary to their space and budget,” says Megan. The next step in the Sideli process is a trip to your home — to look over the space and lay out samples to solidify the tile plan. Since they also offer expert installation, during that visit they will take measurements and can schedule your project through completion. Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and by appointment.

“Everyone should have a beautiful home.” That’s what Betsy Helmuth thought 13 years ago, when she founded Affordable Interior Design — the antidote to highpriced design solutions. “What about people like me?” she wondered. “How does the everyday working family create stylish rooms and welcoming environments?” Answer? Affordable Interior Design, a project road map that tells clients exactly what to get, where to put it, and where to buy it — maybe Ikea, maybe Pottery Barn — places that offer good design essentials at reasonable prices. They begin with a questionnaire that helps the team get to know you and your design goals. An in-home consultation solidifies the concept, which is followed by a comprehensive plan that includes a layout and detailed shopping list — even wall paint and artwork. You make the purchases, follow the plan and — Viola! — a spectacular result, created by Betsy and her team, inspired and carried out by you. It’s easy, affordable and stress-free. Residential and commercial clients welcome to call, or stop by the storefront in Dobbs Ferry. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Private parties and classes on weekends. Design services by appointment.

n the age of online purveyors and discount merchandisers, high-quality men’s tailoring is all but gone — but not quite. Nigel’s in downtown Hastings, has revived the concept of the well-dressed man — the look that immediately says, “This man knows fabric; this man understands fit; this man recognizes quality.” Presiding over Nigel’s is Ali Khatami, an alumnus of Pincus Brothers-Maxwell, one of the venerable names in men’s tailored clothing, and of HickeyFreeman, the American suit manufacturer. Now, with his own brand called “Nigel’s Drape,” modeled after Savile Row suits and other iconic English city and country garments, but with a casual American sensibility, Khatami is making the collection available at his own retail store in Hastings as well as through a wholesale division for top-of-the-line haberdashers across the country. At Nigel’s, the tailored man can purchase readymade or made-to-measure bespoke suits and outerwear, accented by curated accessories, including broadcloth shirts, cashmere sweaters made from the finest yarns, Italian-made jeans and trousers, bench-made shoes, and seven-fold silk ties and pocket squares. Womenswear, too. “Why shouldn’t a woman enjoy the luxury of suits and coats made from menswear cloth?” Khatami observes. “Why can’t a tailored woman bask in the elegance of the finest cashmere sweaters and accessories?” At Nigel’s, she can. “There is always a market for quality,” Khatami says. “There is a soul in well-made clothing.” Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

As wise homeowners know, regular maintenance is cost-effective. And one of the most important ways to maintain the integrity of your house, as well as its good looks, is with a quality paint job. Service Unlimited has been offering Old World craftsmanship to homeowners for more than a quarter of a century. The success of the company is all in the name: Service Unlimited. We are housepainters, but the application of paint is at the end of the job, not the beginning. First comes power-washing to create a clean surface, then scraping off cracked and flaking paint, followed by sanding rough areas. The next step is to apply fresh caulk around doors and windows to prevent moisture from rotting out wood frames. Other pre-paint services include reglazing windows, nailing down loose boards, filling in nail holes, applying a primer/sealer coat of paint, and only then the finishing coat. From Cape Cods to multistory mansions, Service Unlimited means superior customer service, including daily cleanup and exceptional workmanship. Just ask our customers. Office hours: Call anytime.
