GLAD YOU’RE WELCOME TO LIVING IN SCARSDALE, an all-inclusive guide to Westchester County’s grand village in a park and its Edgemont neighbor. Here you will find out what makes Scarsdale a unique Westchester oasis in which to live, work and play, as well as experience some of the sights and special tidbits only known by seasoned Scarsdalians.  Long known as The Village in a Park, Scarsdale is a community full of volunteerism, academic excellence and high achievement, all with ties to the very beginnings of American settlement. There’s much to be explored and uncov-

ered in the village. We hope Living in Scarsdale will be your guide.

One of the few municipalities in New York to function as both a town and a village, Scarsdale’s 317 years of history have groomed it to be one of the premier communities in Westchester County, with a history richly steeped in volunteerism and thoughtful, community-based approaches to governance and problem-solving. Each of the village’s five neighborhoods plays home to their own character and elementary school, but, when it comes time for middle school, and high school after that, Scarsdale’s children unite under one roof and participate in one of the most successful and celebrated public school systems in the country. So too do the residents of Scarsdale’s five neighborhoods unite in choosing the village’s elected leaders as well as during any of a number of happy events during the year. Individual achievement and acumen in furtherance of the communal good, that’s often what Scarsdale is all about, and it’s a tradition that’s served this village well for decades. So continue into this guide and find out whether or not the Underground Railroad stopped in Scarsdale, who has the best, and only, late-night snackfest around town, how the local real estate market has been trending, how something called platform tennis — now usually just called paddle — came to be and, just maybe, who the heck Caleb Heathcote was. It’s all part of Living in Scarsdale. Welcome home.

Edgewood

Edgewood occupies the southeastern portion of Scarsdale and was named, quite literally, for its location at the edge of the woods. It includes the neighborhoods of Arthur Manor, Drake-Edgewood and part of Berkeley-in-Scarsdale. A family-oriented Scarsdale neighborhood, Edgewood has a close-knit solidarity to it. Many families walk their children to school and children often play in the streets. The Edgewood School Historical Society, founded in 2006, currently holds the only historical database in all of the elementary schools.

Fox Meadow also houses the Scarsdale Public Library and the multi-purpose Betty Taubert Girl Scout House. A majority of Fox Meadow’s houses were built in the 1920s and 30s, giving the neighborhood a charming, historic feel.

Greenacres Situated in the northern-most point of Scarsdale, Greenacres borders Hartsdale on its west side and White Plains on its east. With its parks, fields and close proximity to downtown White Plains,

Scarsdale’s most centrally located neighborhood was named after Scarsdale settler and New York City’s 31st mayor, Caleb Heathcote. The Heathcote section also includes the Sherbrooke Park, Murray Hill Middle and East Heathcote neighborhoods and its borders line both White Plains and New Rochelle. Heathcote Elementary School opened its doors in 1953, gaining national coverage in McCall’s magazine for its modern campus style. Scarsdale’s only middle school is also located Continued

EXPLORE Quaker Ridge The southernmost neighborhood in Scarsdale took its name from Scarsdale’s early Quaker settlers. Its eponymous elementary school opened in 1947. Quaker Ridge is known for its variety of available outdoor sporting opportunities. It is home to many of Scarsdale’s golf clubs, including Quaker Ridge, and the county-owned Saxon Woods course. Quaker Ridge also houses Scarsdale’s municipal pool complex, as well as Scarsdale’s premier riding stable, Boulder Brook Equestrian Center. Its neighborhoods include Secor Farms, West Quaker Ridge, Scarsdale Meadows and Colonial Acres.

Edgemont While Edgemont homes have a Scarsdale ZIP code, 10583, the 2.76-square-mile community is actually an unincorporated section of the town of Greenburgh. Nonetheless, Edgemont has a distinct personality and community of its own. Its smaller size fosters an intimate and community-based environment. Edgemont’s hilly landscape and cozy atmosphere is exact Added features like golf courses and a nature center help to distinguish each of

Visit Lange’s on any weekday afternoon and you’ll find it filled with enthusiastic teens and parents, but there’s another demographic most aren’t aware of, The Sunday Morning Club. “If you come in at 8 a.m. [on Sunday mornings], this table here will be full of older gentlemen,” Mejia said, gesturing to the back corner of the restaurant, near the pizza station. “They will come here and chat for hours and, of course, have coffee, doughnuts and breakfast.” Beside the food, which Mejia says he thinks is the main draw, the gentlemen also enjoy their favorite restaurant in the rare slow hour. “They come here and have a peaceful time,” he said. VIVIAN Her search for world-class spine surgery brought her back home. When even the smallest tasks caused her severe pain, Vivian Scrocca went to see her doctor who told her she would need back surgery. Fortunately Dr. Andrew Casden, a top spine surgeon from New York City, had just joined the White Plains Hospital Center for Orthopedic & Spine Surgery. Dr. Casden and his partner Dr. Jared Brandoff performed a minimally invasive procedure that eliminated Vivian’s pain and got her back on her feet the same day. Now, Vivian can enjoy gardening and vacations with the grandkids once again.

Ramsey Farm: A Scarsdale hidden gem RAMSEY FARM, LOCATED AT 17 RAMSEY ROAD, might come as a surprise to visitors — an organic farm that sells flowers and produce from April to December. “We try to grow the freshest food possible,” said John Ramsey, who, along with his wife, Elena, owns

and operates Ramsey Farm. John’s grandfather started farming in his backyard during the Great Depression, but it wasn’t until the 1950s he and his family began selling fresh produce to Scarsdale residents, a tradition they’ve kept for the last six decades and four generations.

he Scarsdale Woman’s Club offers women in Scarsdale and surrounding communities educational and cultural enrichment programs held in Rowsley, its beautiful 19th-century manor house on Drake Road. Members work together on philanthropic projects. On Wednesday afternoons the club sponsors free lectures and demonstrations open to the public. Members enjoy additional programs on art, community affairs, education, literature, music and many other subjects every week. Evening and morning programs were recently added. Donations of clothing, household items and books are accepted at the club’s Carriage House. Tag sales raise money for charities supporting women and children. Books are distributed where needed throughout the world. Prospective members can learn more about club activities

at the annual Open House on Thursday, Sept. 13, 1-4 p.m. Rowsley was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. It is an attractive venue for private parties, community meetings and weddings. The club is conducting a centennial capital fund drive to raise $150,000 for needed improvements, including a handicapped accessible bathroom and a generator to prevent damage to the house during power outages. Donors will have the satisfaction of helping preserve and improve a vital Scarsdale institution. Checks made out to the SWC Centennial Fund are tax-deductible and will be gratefully received at 37 Drake Road, Scarsdale, NY 10583. The Scarsdale Woman’s Club looks forward to a second century of education and philanthropy. For more information, go to scarsdalewomansclub.org, email swc1918@verizon.net or call 723-0024.

F YOU’RE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO ENJOY the weather during the spring and summer months, there are many recreation opportunities in Scarsdale.

First up are the tennis courts. If you like to

work on your drop shot, serve or overhand smash, there are 26 tennis courts across the village at Crossway Field, Wynmor Park, Brite Avenue Park, Scarsdale High School and Scarsdale Middle School. A permit is required to play at each of the courts. They are available at village hall. Thinking about bringing friends and family from out of town to play singles or doubles? As long as you have a permit, the courts are open to both residents and their guests. If you already love regular tennis, maybe

court with a small, spongy ball and wooden paddles. The courts are surrounded by a 12-foot wall made of tightly stretched wire. During play, the ball is allowed to hit the wall, similar to racquetball and squash. The name “platform tennis” is derived from the elevated platform on which the sport is

played. Each of these platforms have heating equipment which can melt ice and snow. You can find the special courts at Brite Avenue Park and Scarsdale High School. There are also paddle courts at Fox Meadow Tennis Club, which is a private club. **** The Scarsdale Pool Complex is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Like the tennis

courts, residents need a membership for the pool, which can be purchased online. There are programs for all ages at the pool, including private swimming and diving lessons, classes for toddlers and special memberships for seniors. **** Scarsdale also has its share of recreational sports leagues for students including basketball, tennis, soccer and softball. Baseball is offered through Scarsdale Little League, about which you can learn more at scarsdalelittleleague.com. There are also programs for adult golf and adult softball. For more on the many Scarsdale recreation opportunities call the village’s recreation department at 722-1160.
