Sweeping new regs

DUE SOON

by Kevin Jones, editor kevin.jones@penton.com

BACK IN JANUARY , the new year looked to be a big and busy one for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), both in terms of the number of items on the regulatory agenda and in their significance to the trucking industry. That hasn’t changed, though the agency continues to extend the timeline on several critical rulemakings. Complicating matters, Congress has had some ideas of its own about what’s best for trucking, with several such bills introduced along the way.

So far in 2015, the agency in January gave the green light to cross-border trucking with Mexico; in February it closed the comment period on a proposal to increase carrier insurance minimums; in May it issued a notice of proposed rulemaking on allowing drivers with diabetes to operate commercial vehicles; and in June FMCSA received the recommendation on CDL training standards from an advisory panel made up of industry representatives and other stakeholders convened under a negotiated rulemaking. From the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), trucking has

new requirements for electronic stability control systems and Phase II of the Obama administration’s truck fuel eficiency standards. Among the major actions still pending

legislation dealing with CSA, hours of service, trailer length, insurance minimums, and driver pay, to name a few. Some of the proposals would block FMCSA regs, some would strengthen

New rules on safety fitness, ELDs, coercion, and speed limiters due next month are a revamping of the safety fitness determination, an electronic logging mandate, a speed limiter requirement, a drug and alcohol testing database, possible changes to insurance minimums, and driver coercion protection. A number of these have already missed deadlines, as required by Congress in MAP-21 to be enacted by Oct. 1 of last year. Several now are set to be published by the end of September. And Congress, currently debating a new highway bill and the annual DOT budget, has proposed additional

them, and some of the bills are aimed at negating others. As the legislative process runs its course (Congress was still working to beat a July 31 highway bill deadline as this issue of American Trucker went to press), the complete list of FMCSA regulatory initiatives and publication dates scheduled for 2015 based on the July update is on pages 10-11.

Driven to leave SMALLER CARRIERS ARE BEING BURDENED BY HIGHER COSTS Increasing numbers of smaller trucking companies are foundering on the backs of higher costs and regulatory compliance, according to data compiled for the 26th Annual State of Logistics Report issued by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and presented by Penske Logistics. That trend may also be why trucking capacity will continue getting tighter, explained Rosalyn Wilson, senior business analyst with Parsons Corp. and author of the report. “You may think the demise of a smaller carrier operating just 30 trucks doesn’t matter,” she said. “But when you have 400 such companies exiting the industry, that adds up to a lot of capacity.” Wilson noted that 390 trucking companies went into bankruptcy in the first quarter of 2014 alone—carriers that averaged 27 vehicles each. She added that Donald Broughton, chief market analyst for Avondale Partners, concluded that “there is a direct link between” new federal

truck safety regulations and the rash of small carrier bankruptcies. “Many of the companies that went out of business were ordered by federal authorities to install electronic logging devices that made it easier to enforce hours-of-service rules,” he said. “As a result, those companies saw their truck utilization drop as drivers with fewer miles earned less money and quit, forcing carriers to hire and train new drivers, often at higher wages.” Wilson added that although small trucking companies represent “a small part of the industry,” they are ofen the only source of competition in the trucking market. According to IHS Automotive, new Class 8 truck registrations increased 3.8% to a total of 3.78 million vehicles at the end of 2014. Wilson pointed out that large fleets accounted for 48% of all of them. That represents a 23% rise in new registrations for fleets operating more than 500 trucks, she noted.

SmartWay lays out its Vision In 2012, the freight industry was responsible for emitting 2 billion tons of carbon globally, according to representatives from SmartWay, the EPA program geared toward reducing transportation-related emissions. They said road freight is the single-greatest emitter of CO2, emitting more than all other modes of transportation combined. Denise Kearns of SmartWay added that freight is the fastest growing source of carbon emissions, and demand for goods is rising. She said volume is expected to grow 45% by 2025 and quadruple by 2050, tripling the amount of freight emissions. To keep up with the growing demand, SmartWay has outlined its plans to expand its brand and goals to reduce the environmental, economic and social impact of transportation in the supply chain.

The SmartWay program has helped usher in greater acceptance of aerodynamic devices.

During a recent webinar, SmartWay outlined Vision 2020, its plan to reduce carbon emissions. “The goal is to stay ahead of the curve in finding ways to reduce emissions,” Kearns said. “We are working with the legacy fleets to try to improve their performance.” Vision 2020 goals are: • Catalyzing change across the entire freight supply chain

THE BUSINESS OF TRUCKING

Sleeping your way to more productivity Getting proper rest boosts on-the-job performance and ofers long-term health benefits by Tim Brady, Business Editor

Thinkstock

12 AMERICAN TRUCKER / AUGUST 2015

Over the past several months, there has been a lot of discussion concerning sleep and truckers. In June, AmericanTrucker.com posted an article covering the 10 signs a trucker needs to look for indicating that he/she needs a sleep break. In our sister publication, Fleet Owner, Executive Editor Sean Kilcarr wrote “Sleep tight: Helping drivers rest,” an article that listed many of the ailments that develop over time due to the lack of a good night’s rest. The loss of cognitive thinking, obesity, an increase in the efects of heart disease, chronic pain, and diabetes are all made worse by nonrestorative sleep.

Fatigue is one of the leading causes of many commercial motor vehicle trafic mishaps. There can never be too much information and knowledge provided on the subject. Sleep is important, not just to the safe operation of a truck, but to the health and well-being of every human on this little blue orb we call home. As Kilcarr stated, “The human need for sleep is simply not optional. It is as important as the air we breathe.” ‘CLEANING’ THE BRAIN Is your brain receiving enough shut-eye to rid itself of neurotoxins? Say what? What are neurotoxins?

According to Maiken Nedergaard, co-director of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine, University of Rochester Medical Center School of Medicine and Dentistry, toxins collect in the brain each and every hour of the day when the body is awake. And the brain is just like other organs in the body: It requires time to flush out waste products. Researchers have known for a long time that sleep is important for restoring and strengthening specific functions in the brain linked to memory, regulating emotions, decision-making, and even creativity. Scientists have discovered that sleep also cleans the brain. This research increased awareness of the brain’s sophisticated internal cleansing mechanism, adding one more reason to get the correct amount of sleep. Previously, scientists thought the brain only cleansed itself by removing toxins through a slow and methodical process throughout the day; however, they now think these toxins are discarded more like flushing a toilet, while you’re sleeping, rather than in a slow dribble. In her research, Nedergaard called the brain cleansing system “the glymphatic system,” similar to the lymph system, which filters toxic waste products out of the body. Now here’s where the amount and quality of sleep you get becomes vitally important. Over time, if lef in your brain because you don’t get the sleep required to clean them out, these toxins will increase the likelihood that you will develop neurological illnesses like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

we sleep, letting cerebrospinal fluid flush neurotoxins through the spinal column in voluminous amounts. QUALITY AND QUANTITY What is the length of time necessary to flush these neurotoxins from the brain? According to Tara Swart, a senior lecturer at MIT specializing in sleep and the brain, “The whole process takes six to eight hours.”

The study targeted specifically the neurotoxin beta-amyloid, which has been found in clusters in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease. When the glymphatic system can’t function properly due to lack of that crucial six to eight hours of sleep, harmful toxins, like beta-amyloid, are allowed to grow in quantity. It’s not a question of how much sleep you think you need. Truckers have long said they can go with short sleep periods and still be at the top of their driving game; however, Swart says this type of bragging misses the fact that even if you don’t think you need sleep, your brain needs those six to eight hours to flush out the neurotoxins. Miss those sleep hours and you may feel fine today, but by the time you’re a senior citizen, those beta-amyloid clusters will have accumulated in your brain to the point where you don’t even know your spouse or your children. Is this a risk you’re willing to take just to prove you’ve got the bravado to sleep less and accomplish more? Past sleep research proves a rested brain performs better across the board. You’re more creative, you’re able to control your emotions, and your short- and

long-term memory function far better. You’re less fatigued and safer in everything you do, as you’re able to think more clearly. But we truckers all know there are times when catching enough shut-eye and meeting deadlines are in conflict. Swart suggests naps. Taking even 20 minutes of shut-eye is comparable to plugging in your phone battery, according to Swart. “For 30 minutes of downtime, your brain will experience improved learning and memory,” she continued. “For those fortunate enough to snag 60 to 90 minutes of rest, new connections can form, which can unleash creativity in the brain.” Outside influences (radio, TV or other interruptions) can prevent full REM sleep. According to neurotoxin researchers, a deeper sleep improves the toxin flush. One researcher said, “The more beta-amyloid you have in certain parts of your brain, the less deep sleep you get and, consequently, the worse your memory. Additionally, the less deep sleep you have, the less effective you are at clearing out this bad protein.” As a final note, this not only applies to truckers, but to every human being— even those who think they are invincible and those who own the trucking companies and businesses that service the industry. While in a year or two you may not remember this article or who wrote it, here’s to you in your golden years, enjoying all the memories of a fruitful and prosperous life. Sweet dreams.

TIRE RACK

Roadside

SAFETY by Kevin Rohlwing, contributing editor kevinrohlwing@comcast.net

DRIVER ATTITUDES TOWARDS emergency road service have definitely changed since the introduction of Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA). In the past, most operators would limp to the next truck stop or

When conditions are ideal, emergency road service doesn’t create many additional hazards. The tire servicing process is basically the same no matter where the tires are serviced, but there are diferences when servicing tires on

Driver training can lead to a safer work environment for roadside technicians rest area so they could get some time in the sleeper while they waited for the technician to fix the tire(s). But it seems like the increased attention on vehicle maintenance by enforcement oficials has caused drivers to just pull over whenever they become aware of a tire problem.

As a former technician, I’ve spent countless hours on the side of a road or highway. From the two-lane country road to a major Interstate highway, tires are serviced in all types of trafic.

the side of a road that can be significant. Most of these are related to the physical location of the vehicle and if that location is less than ideal, the risks to technicians increase exponentially. need of service are on the driver’s side, there must be enough room between the fog line and the tires for the technician to work. If the space is insuficient, then the driver needs to move the vehicle to a diferent location. It’s time for fleets to step up and train drivers to be conscious of where they pull over for tire service. In most cases, the tires are shredded so driving a few extra hundred yards or even a mile or two isn’t going to make much of a difference since the tires will be replaced. Of course, there will be times when the vehicle cannot be moved, but in situations where a safer work area is available, the driver should think about the safety of the technician.

And while I’m positive that drivers would never consciously make a decision that would endanger a roadside tire technician, I’m equally certain that they won’t even think about it unless they are educated on the subject.

Based on the preliminary analysis, it appears that the most logical solution is to just move the vehicle. If the tires in

gearboxes are being offered; more comfortable and ergonomic cab interiors are available; and more work is being done on the assembly line to ensure holes in the chassis don’t need to be drilled for body wiring harnesses.

As for capability, Class 8 truck manufacturers all boast of having the production capability to make every truck that comes off the line essentially a custom, built-to-order vehicle. That means customers can spec their new trucks exactly for the application. Thanks to the latest technology, these trucks also come from the factory with all the connectivity the World Wide Web has to offer, whether that’s remote diagnostic systems, routing and load management, or of-duty entertainment systems.

Yet there’s also simplicity: a trait becoming ever-more valued to not only make the work life of today’s commercial drivers easier and safer, but also make their trucks easier to upfit and maintain.

And efficiency—fuhgeddaboudit! These new trucks are going to be pushing mpg numbers into record territory. More automated manual transmissions and fully automatic

As a bonus and for fun, because so many truckers, when they park the rig for some home time, step out of a Class 8 cab and into a pickup, we’ve also included a brief peek at what’s new in light-duty trucks. Capability, eficiency and simplicity. It’s the mantra OEMs followed to design and produce their 2016 models, and it will assuredly be the mantra for their future truck-making endeavors as well.

CLASS 8 CATERPILLAR Caterpillar has introduced the CT680 model for the 2016 model year. The 124-in. BBC aluminum cab-equipped unit, which is available in both truck and tractor configuration, helps round out the OEM’s CT vocational truck line “trifecta.” The CT680 is a Class 8 set-forward-axle model that will be ofered with the 13L C13 engine and a range of transmission options, including Caterpillar’s CX31 6-speed automatic, Eaton UltraShift Plus automated mechanical transmission (AMT), and several Eaton manual gearboxes in configurations from 8 to 18 speed. Caterpillar also plans to introduce a 15L engine option for the CT680 and for the 122-in. BBC configuration of the CT660 later this year. The CT680 model includes two exterior trim levels (L and LG) to address different style and serviceability needs and both are “comparable in pricing,” the OEM notes. The CT680L features a three-piece Metton hood, three-piece chrome bumper, threepiece chrome stainless grille surround, and composite halogen headlights with incandescent park/ turn lights. By contrast, the CT680LG

comes with a one-piece fiberglass hood, three-piece black bumper and integrated fiberglass grille surround, sealed-beam halogen headlights, and LED park/turn lights. A dual external air cleaner option for more eficient air management in dirty, dusty applications will be available for both the CT680 truck and tractor configurations. Ratings on the standard C13 engine powering the CT680 range from 410 to 475 hp., with peak torque from 1,450 to 1,700 lbs.-ft. The CX31 automatic, which offers six forward speeds and one reverse, comes with two side PTO (power take of ) locations and an exclusive rear PTO slot. Drivers can choose from multiple seat options, including the Cat “comfort seat.” The

tilting, telescoping steering column and leather-wrapped steering wheel is a standard feature. The CT680 also features a curved, sloped, wraparound windshield in either a one- or two-piece design. Caterpillar adds that all of its CT trucks—CT660, CT681 axle-forward model, and CT680—are being built at a manufacturing facility in Escobedo, Mexico.

FREIGHTLINER TRUCKS The new optional AeroSmart aerodynamic package and SmartAdvantage integrated powertrain, both aimed at the Cascadia Class 8 highway tractor, are the big highlights from Freightliner for the 2016 model year. The OEM says the new AeroSmart package allows the latest aerodynamic components available for the Cascadia to be easily combined with the SmartAdvantage integrated powertrain. The SmartAdvantage powertrain combines a SmartTorque2-equipped Cummins ISX15 engine with the Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed automated manual transmission (AMT). Freightliner says this combination allows customers to quickly spec and order tractor configurations that achieve the best fuel economy possible.

Freightliner is also ofering new driver comfort options for its Cascadia and Cascadia Evolution tractor models. The second-generation Bose Ride system II truck seat suspension now features a “ride control selector” to enhance seat-top ergonomics for greater driver comfort, and a SmarTire tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) from Bendix CVS shows real-time pressure and temperature status on a dash display. A swivel mount for up to a 26-in. flat screen TV with antenna can be securely stored when not in use. On the proprietary powertrain side and to help the powertrain operate as efficiently as possible, Freightliner’s brother Detroit recently made its intelligent powertrain management (IPM) a standard feature on all Detroit DT12 AMTs paired with any heavy-duty Detroit-branded engine. The IPM system integrates preloaded terrain maps and GPS into engine and transmission functions so they “know” the route ahead, up to one mile, and can better manage the momentum of the truck in concert with roadway terrain to reduce fuel consumption. IPM also integrates seamlessly with the newly available Detroit Assurance suite of safety systems.

INTERNATIONAL Introduced at the end of last year, the Navistar International ProStar ES (efi-

International ProStar ES ciency specification) highway tractor is getting additional tweaks for the 2016 model year. The ProStar ES is available with either Cummins’ ISX15 or Navistar’s N13 proprietary 13L engine. It can be equipped with the Eaton Cummins SmartAdvantage powertrain, which pairs the Cummins ISX15 with the Eaton Fuller Advantage automated manual transmission (AMT). Recent enhancements to the ProStar ES spec’d with the ISX15 include the integration of Cummins’ ADEPT electronics suite, which includes SmartTorque2 and SmartCoast. That suite continuously makes minor adjustments to speed, power and transmission gear while monitoring current grade and vehicle mass to take advantage of vehicle momentum. The end result? Maximizing eficiency while using less fuel in the process. Navistar notes that Cummins’ ADEPT and SmartCoast features are

also available on non-ES ProStar models that are powered by the Cummins ISX15. ProStar ES models equipped with the N13 engine are coupled to an Eaton Fuller Advantage AMT and now include newly enhanced engine controls. A neutral coast feature shifs the transmission to neutral when a driver backs of the accelerator, maximizing coast time and improving fuel economy. Taken together, those upgrades enable the ProStar ES to achieve a total fuel economy improvement of 2% over the iteration unveiled in December of last year, a model that at the time Navistar said ofered a 13% fuel economy gain compared to comparable non-ES ProStar tractors. “The ProStar ES continues to leverage the latest advancements in powertrain and vehicle technologies to drive incremental gains and provide customers with the industry’s best fuel eficiency package,” says Bill Kozek, president of truck and parts at Navistar. “As part of our continuous improvement mindset, we’re not standing still, and we’ll continue to enhance this spec with increasingly more eficient components and advanced technologies.” Navistar adds that its ProStar ES and other ProStar models powered by the ISX15 or the N13 are also available with XFE 75W-90. KENWORTH The limited edition ICON 900, based of Kenworth Truck’s W900L tractor, is what the OEM put at the top of its hit list for the 2016 model year. Kenworth says it expects to sell between 1,000 and 1,500 of the limited edition tractor, which is being positioned as a “trucker’s truck.” It is being ofered with a 72or 86-in. sleeper and up to a 600-hp. engine. Kenworth is also introducing a new 76-in. mid-roof sleeper for its T680 and T880 highway tractors. Full production of that sleeper is expected to start in the fall. The OEM says that the sleeper is 100 lbs. lighter than its high-roof sleeper package and is optimized to provide a more aerodynamic profile. Operators in tanker and flatbed applications could see up to a 5% boost in fuel economy. Kenworth is also upgrading its super-fuel-efficient T680 Advantage package; it now ofers 10% better fuel economy compared to the 2013 version. That 10% gain equates to a yearly savings of more than $4,600 in fuel per

truck for the average long-haul operation when fuel cost is calculated at around $4/gal., the company stresses. New T680 Advantage specs include the addition of the OEM’s idle management system (IMS), tire pressure monitoring, wide-base tires, and predictive cruise control. The OEM’s IMS with auto start/stop is a battery-based auxiliary power unit designed to keep the cab and sleeper comfortable for up to 10 hours. The engine auto start/stop function, which will become available later this year, will provide automatic battery monitoring and engine startup when batteries get depleted to their min-

imum power levels. That will allow the truck’s batteries to be recharged while air conditioning and hotel loads are still being utilized, the OEM notes. Once batteries are suficiently charged, the system shuts down the engine and runs again on pure battery power.

MACK TRUCKS The big news from Mack Trucks for the 2016 model year is the introduction of its LR low-entry cabover refuse unit. Built with input from customers, the Mack LR model is available in threeaxle 6x4 configurations and can be powered by diesel or natural gas fuels. The OEM adds that it also designed the LR model with body builders in mind, ofering additional access points and mounting locations for wiring, controls and joysticks. Cab interior enhancements on the LR model include tilt and telescopic steering columns, power windows and power door locks, memory mirrors, in-dash air conditioning, standard in-cab LED lighting, and an instrument cluster with color LCD. The rear cab windows now wrap around the rear cab corners, improving driver visibility. The 11L Mack MP7 diesel engine is standard in the LR model, cranking out 325 to 345 hp. and

Volvo VNX 630 Tridem

The LR model is equipped with either an Allison RDS 5-speed or 6-speed automatic transmission. Mack introduced new functionality for its Pinnacle highway model aimed at bulk and liquid haul applications. Called Load Logic, the system includes a 6x2 liftable pusher axle option designed for vehicles that routinely haul out heavy and return empty. Mack says Load Logic and the 6x2 are designed to monitor trailer weight and adjust the truck’s driveline configuration to boost fuel eficiency without impacting performance. Load Logic integrates an advanced sensor in the rear suspension with the Mack mDrive automated manual transmission (AMT), enabling it to operate as a direct drive transmission when hauling loaded trailers. It then switches back to an overdrive format, enabling a 12th gear to lower cruise rpms and maximize fuel eficiency. Mack also introduced a severe-duty version of its mDrive AMT dubbed the mDrive HD, which is now the standard gearbox on its Granite and Titan trucks. The 12-speed mDrive HD is engineered to work exclusively with Mack MP7 and MP8 engines and is controlled through a dash-mounted shif pad by selecting drive, neutral or reverse. For more demanding jobsite maneuvers, the premium shif pad can be operated manually to hold a gear, downshif or upshif.

PETERBILT The top 2016 model news from Peterbilt Motors remains the introduction of its 579 EPIQ fuel efficiency tractor spec, which incorporates aerodynamic styling, an optimized powertrain, and what the OEM calls “innovative” fuel-saving technologies. The Model 579 EPIQ includes APEX, an optimized

drivetrain that pairs the Paccar MX-13 engine with the Fuller Advantage automated manual transmission. Also included are numerous aerodynamic enhancements developed through computational fluid dynamics research, wind tunnel testing, and thousands of miles of on-the-road validation. Other elements of EPIQ include a roof fairing bridge that reduces the gap between truck and trailer; enhanced chassis fairings that minimize the opening in front of the tandem axle; rubber wheel closeouts on the front axle; a durable bumper dam that reduces aerodynamic lif and drag; and a bumper-to-hood seal that redirects air around the truck. Other fairings include 18-in. sleeper side extenders with 8-in. rubber flares; rubber skirting along the chassis fairing from the quarter fender to the front of the tandem axle with rubber closeouts under the sides of the cab and sleeper; and roof fairings with an exclusive rear wall closeout. The company has launched a new set-forward front axle configuration for its flagship vocational Model 567 for the 2016 model year, along with an allwheel drive option for that same model in a set-back front axle configuration. This includes the Marmon-Herrington

MT-22H front drive axle rated at 22,000 lbs. and the Dana Spicer DS4636 drive axle rated at 46,000 lbs. On top of that, a 58-in. sleeper is now available for the Model 579 in both low- and mid-roof configurations, along with liquid natural gas (LNG) fuel system options for both its Model 579 and 567 LNG trucks in daycab configurations. Both of those models in LNG configuration are powered by the Cummins-Westport ISX12 G with up to 400 hp. and 1,450 lbs.-f. of torque.

VOLVO TRUCKS Topping the 2016 model-year list for Volvo Trucks is its new VNX 630 model designed for high gross weight applications and heavy-haul tasks like equipment hauling, oil and gas delivery, and timber transport. It is ofered with a tridem rear axle group. The Volvo VNX 630 tridem features three rear drive axles instead of two, resulting in an 8x6 configuration that can easily manage up to a 69,000-lb. rear axle load. The extra traction capabilities of the tridem axle enable the VNX 630 tridem to easily traverse steep terrain, mud, ice and other of-road conditions, the OEM notes. Equipped with

a Volvo D16 engine that delivers up to 600 hp. and 2,050 lbs.-f. of torque, the VNX comes standard with the Volvo I-Shift automated manual transmission and features a mid-roof sleeper configuration. The company also introduced a new 6x2 lifable forward axle option for select models that automatically adjusts to load weight changes and ofers 4x2 operation under certain conditions. Ideal for bulk haulers or general freight operations, the OEM says key benefits of “adaptive loading” using this 6x2 liftable forward axle option include greater fuel eficiency, improved traction, lower maintenance costs, and increased driver productivity. Volvo has also rolled out a version of its I-Shif AMT dubbed the I-Shif SD for “severe duty” on- and of-road applications that require frequent shifing. The I-Shift SD is available on Volvo’s VHD truck models when spec’d with the OEM’s proprietary D11 and D13 engines. It’s standard on VHD straight trucks rated at 66,000 lbs. GVWR or higher and tractors rated at 125,000 lbs. GCWR or higher. Finally, Volvo is introducing a “super direct drive” option to boost fuel efficiency by lowering engine rpms at a given vehicle speed, a concept called downspeeding. By using a direct drive I-Shift AMT, the package ofers additional fuel eficiency benefits compared with conventional direct drive transmissions, the OEM explains. Made available for order this year, Volvo’s super direct drive option is designed for linehaul applications that operate in top gear at a GCWR of 80,000 lbs. or less with maximum engine torque of 1,850 lbs.-ft. The super direct drive spec incorporates Meritor’s 2.28 ratio for its 14X tandem drive axle and RPL35 driveline. Meritor has fortified the design by enlarging

the pinion system to accommodate extreme torque levels associated with downspeeding.

WESTERN STAR The start of full production of the 5700XE tractor introduced last year is the big news from Western Star for the 2016 model year. The 5700XE features a 126-in. BBC with a set-back axle and is available with a range of sleeper configurations. The XE in the Class 8 truck’s name stands for “extreme eficiency,” in part to help highlight the 5700XE’s aerodynamic hood, roof, chassis and cab fairings—all designed to reduce drag and increase fuel eficiency. Western Star adds that the 5700XE features a swept-back four-piece bumper with an under-bumper valance to further help boost aerodynamic eficiency, along with halogen headlights optimized for both aerodynamic performance and visibility. A new visor is engineered to work in conjunction with the slope in the 5700XE hood’s rear air ramp to direct airflow over the cab without any aerodynamic penalty. Optional chassis side fairings reduce drag by up to 6% while still providing

easy access to batteries and the truck’s diesel exhaust fluid tank. The 5700XE can be spec’d with a Detroit DD13, DD15 or DD16 engine and comes standard with a Detroit DT12 automated manual transmission that can be mated to any of them. For ultimate fuel eficiency, customers can select the integrated Detroit Powertrain featuring the new downsped Detroit DD15 engine rated at 400 hp. and 1,750 lbs.-ft. of torque, Detroit DT12 transmission with Intelligent Powertrain Management (IPM), and Detroit axles with specific configurations and gearing. Drivers will appreciate the inside of the corrosion-resistant galvanneal lightweight steel cab of the 5700XE. Western Star has added an adjustable steering column and steering wheel featuring integrated controls that help drivers focus on the road ahead. Finally, the 5700XE is equipped with the proprietary Detroit Virtual Technician remote diagnostic service. This is part of the Detroit Connect suite of integrated telematics solutions, which also includes Visibility fleet sofware and the forthcoming On-Board Tablet as options for the 5700XE.

CLASS 1-3 FORD MOTOR The big news from Ford for the 2016 model year is the addition of more options for its Transit van and its popular F-150 pickup, which underwent a major overhaul for the 2015 model year. The OEM is making its SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system an option for the 2016 Transit. It is also boosting the number of available configurations for the Transit to 58, up from 47 in model year 2015, thanks to the addition of dual sliding cargo doors on Transit medium- and high-roof vans. All 2016 Transit vans and wagons come standard with a rearview camera and trailer hitch assist technology. Trailer hitch assist automatically engages when the vehicle is shifed into reverse and displays a graphical overlay on the screen that helps guide drivers when lining up a hitch with a trailer. On top of that, Transit cutaway and chassis cab customers have the option to display the area behind the vehicle on the rearview mirror. Ford’s Pro Trailer Backup Assist will be ofered as an option on the 2016 model F-150. The technology limits vehicle speed while letting the customer steer the trailer with a control knob as the truck steers its wheels. To operate, the customer rotates a knob to indicate how much the system should turn the

trailer. The feature automatically steers the truck to turn the trailer. Ford’s gaseous-fuel prep package for F-150 pickups equipped with the OEM’s 5L V8 engine allows the truck to operate on either compressed natural gas (CNG) or propane.

GENERAL MOTORS Topping the 2016 model upgrade list for General Motors is the addition of a 2.8L Duramax turbodiesel engine for its GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickups. The OEM says that technical details and Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy estimates for those pickups—brought back to life in the 2015 model year—will be available closer to launch. Speaking of fullsize pickups, GM is rolling out several new changes. For starters, an 8-speed automatic transmission is now standard on Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups (along with

the high-end GMC Yukon Denali/Yukon XL Denali models) equipped with the OEM’s 420 hp., 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engine. The GM-developed Hydra-Matic 8L90 8-speed is about the same size and weight as the Hydra-Matic 6L80 6-speed automatic, but its 7.0 overall gear ratio spread is wider. This provides a numerically higher first gear ratio to help drivers start of more confidently with a heavy load or when pulling a trailer. The 8L90 also enables numerically lower rear axle ratios, which reduce engine rpm on the highway. Select 2016 model Chevrolet Silverado and Silverado HD pickup models are also expected to feature a new “prognostic” maintenance capability called Proactive Alert. This is provided via the vehicle’s OnStar 4G LTE onboard wireless network in combination with fleet management tools from Telogis. Bi-fuel package options allow Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD pickups to operate on CNG. A dedicated CNG option on the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana cargo and passenger short-wheelbase vans is available for the three- and fourtank system. The bi-fuel CNG option will be available on all Silverado and Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD single-rearwheel models. GM also revealed the fuel economy ratings for its City Express cargo van.

VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.

GM says the City Express is rated at an EPA-estimated 24 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, resulting in 25 mpg combined. This is due to the van’s 2.0L dual-overhead cam inline 4-cyl. engine matched to a continuously variable transmission.

MERCEDES-BENZ A new compact van is what Mercedes-Benz USA is touting for the 2016 model year. The Metris will be available in October in passenger and cargo configurations. It is 202.4-in. long, 75.9-in. wide and 74.8-in. high and is powered by a 4-cyl. gasoline engine producing 208 hp. and 258 lbs.-ft. of torque. An optional eco stop/start function is incorporated with its 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic transmission. Like the Sprinter, the Metris is packed with a variety of safety advancements, including six airbags for the cargo van. All models will feature standard attention assist, crosswind assist, and standard load-adaptive electronic stability control.

Ram 1500

RAM TRUCKS The ProMaster City van is a compact version of the fullsize ProMaster and is designed to appeal primarily to two types of customers: small individual trade businesses that don’t have “heavy load” requirements and delivery companies. The powertrain combines a 2.4L Tigershark gasoline-fired I-4 engine cranking out 178 hp. and 174 lbs.-ft. of torque matched to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy numbers are 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The 9-speed automatic is a ZF-designed transmission built under license by Chrysler at its Kokomo, IN, plant.

with unique tuning; a new steering calibration; and a sofer rear stabilizer bar for improved dynamics. The Ram 1500 Rebel will be available exclusively as a crew cab model with a 5-f. 7-in. bed length in 4x2 or 4x4 configurations. Both are powered by a 3.6L Pentastar V6 generating 305 hp. and 269 lbs.-f. of torque. Also available is a 5.7L Hemi V8 engine cranking out 395 hp. and 410 lbs.-f. of torque connected to the TorqueFlite 8, Ram’s 8-speed automatic transmission.

TOYOTA

The long-awaited 2016 Titan XD fullsize pickup was unveiled by Nissan earlier this year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Titan is touted to be the first in a new line of fullsize pickup models.

The van’s compact MacPherson front axle strut suspension includes large-diameter shock absorbers, steel springs, and a solid stabilizer bar combined with an independent, bi-link rear suspension.

Powered by a Cummins 5L V8 turbocharged diesel engine cranking out 310 hp. and 555 lbs.-f. of torque, the Titan XD crew cab will be the first release in a line that will ultimately feature three cab configurations, two frame sizes, three powertrain offerings, and five grade levels. Eventually, the Titan will have multiple powertrain choices, including a gasoline V8 and the company’s first V6 ofering in this class.

On the pickup side of Ram’s ledger, the OEM introduced a Ram 1500 EcoDiesel HFE (high fuel efficiency) model that gets a reported 21 mpg in city driving and 29 mpg on the highway for a combined rating of 24 mpg.

Redesigned from the ground up, Toyota’s 2016 midsize Tacoma pickup features a new V6 gasoline engine option that the OEM says will provide more power while sipping less fuel. The truck will be powered by a 2.7L 4-cyl. engine or a new 3.5L Atkinson cycle V6 equipped with Toyota’s D-4S technology, which uses both direct and port injection. The engines are paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission with electronic shif. The V6 can also be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, the OEM notes.

Ram also introduced an of-road package—the Ram 1500 Rebel. The Rebel package features a 1-in. raised ride height for improved of-road approach, departure and break-over angles; Bilstein-supplied front and rear shocks

The Tacoma’s tailgate features an integrated spoiler for improved aerodynamics along with what Toyota calls an “easy lowering feature,” which allows it to slowly drop without slamming down.

Buildingtrust Reputation is at the heart of Santa Monica Seafood’s decision to lease WHOLESALE DELIVERY The Food Safety Modernization Act, the most sweeping reform of food safety laws in more than 70 years, aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifing the focus from responding to contamination to preventing it. As provisions of the legislation are implemented by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the burden to meet the mandate falls especially hard on companies like Santa Monica Seafood. The largest seafood distributor in the Southwest, processing more than 32 million lbs. of fresh and frozen seafood annually, Santa Monica Seafood operates a 120,000-sq.-f. processing and distribution facility in Rancho Dominguez, CA. There, seafood arrives daily and is parceled out on pallets for local delivery by truck, or transported in 53-f. trailers to one of the company’s cross-dock facilities in Las Vegas, NV; Phoenix, AZ; San Diego, Sacramento and Atascadero, CA. From its distribution locations, the company uses medium-duty trucks with refrigerated bodies to make deliveries to highend restaurants and about 500 grocery stores, including several major chains. Each truck makes 17 to 25 stops daily.

“We’ve had a reputation for providing the highest quality seafood since my two

26 AMERICAN TRUCKER / AUGUST 2015

great uncles started this business in 1939 as a seafood market and restaurant,” says Vince Cigliano, director of special projects. “We are the only U.S. seafood company to be globally recognized with both ISO 14001 and FSSC 22000 food safety certifications. “We don’t compromise and that commitment funnels all the way down the distribution chain,” Cigliano continues. “Our reputation is riding on the trucks we use to make deliveries. Our customers expect us to turn around seafood orders in a matter of hours, so it goes without saying that reliable trucks are essential to our success.” Santa Monica Seafood has opted for a full-service lease program for its trucks, the majority of which are with PacLease through Rush Truck Leasing and Pape Kenworth in Fresno. “A full-service lease provides premium truck and maintenance services that help us make sure we’re presenting a great image and serving our customers efectively,” Cigliano says. “In addition, we have

flexibility, which helps keep our operation running eficiently. With the PacLease national account program, for example, we can move trucks from one location to another, depending on our needs. We also have access to various locations for maintenance. PacLease provides a mobile service unit at our main facility, something that saves us a lot of time.” PacLease supplies 18 trucks in four locations. Included are Peterbilt Model 325s and Kenworth T270s with 14- and 16-f. bodies and Peterbilt 337s with 18-f. bodies. The units feature Paccar PX engines and Allison automatic transmissions. American Truck Bodies & Repair supplies bodies and lifgates. The company specs Carrier Supra and Thermo King T-800-50 refrigeration units and uses cargo temperature sensors with Telogis sofware. “Our brand is very strong and these trucks and technologies reinforce our image,” Cigliano states. “That is important to us, especially as we continue to realize an annual growth rate of 20% in demand for our quality seafood.”

SPOT LIGHT on an

by Timothy Brady Roy Richards How are maintenance and repairs handled? Do you use an OEM shop (truck dealer or engine manufacturer shop) or an independent truck repair shop? For any minor repairs, I take my trucks to a local independent truck repair shop. Routine PMs are done while I’m on the road by TA/Petro Truckstops. Major repairs are done by the OEM manufacturer’s dealer of the truck, i.e., Kenworth, Freightliner, Volvo. What are the major challenges you face with your maintenance/repair program? How do you handle them? I really don’t have issues with maintenance/repair programs. I don’t drive equipment that is unsafe, and I don’t allow my employees to drive unsafe equipment either. I know things break, so I get them fixed ASAP through an aggressive PM program.

What do you do regarding maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime? I do daily pretrip inspections and evening post-trip inspections. I am under and around my truck at least twice a day looking for any problems that may arise, checking for leaks (oil, fluid, or air), checking brakes, and wheel seals.

Owner-operator Roy Richards was honored as AMSA’s 2014 Super Van Operator of the Year—Lifetime Achievement Award. Richards earned the award because of his illustrious 35-year career as an Allied driver and owner of Farley Brothers of Lancaster Inc. His company has three tractors and seven trailers and runs 48 states. The truck he uses is a 2009 KW T2000 pulling a 1996 53-f. Kentucky trailer.

What are your mileage/time intervals on preventive maintenance? The PM on my truck is done between 10,000 and 12,000 mi. Depending on how busy I am, this could be every four to six weeks.

How do you determine when it’s time to replace a truck or trailer? When it costs you more each month to repair your equipment than it would cost you for a monthly payment for a newer piece of equipment, it’s time to replace it.

Do you stock any parts for your trucks or purchase as needed? I purchase as needed.

What are your specs for your trucks? Are you able to find these on the used market? Do you purchase used and customize them to your specs? I always purchase good used equipment. I make sure it has low miles, 400,000 to 500,000; an APU unit; and a sleeper. The motor must put out at least 475 hp. I prefer a manual transmission. They’re available and I usually purchase them through Arrow Truck Sales.

How do you ensure good mileage from tires? Which brand of tires do you prefer? Do you use retreads? I never use retreads on my tractors or trailers. I would rather pay for new tires than take a chance of peeling a cap in hot weather. If you want your tires to last, you must check the tire pressure at least once a week. Also, if you see abnormal wear, this is a good sign that the tire is underinflated. I use Michelins as my steer tires, Bridgestones as my drive tires, and BF Goodrich on my trailer.

SHOP TALK

In-cab support BY SEAN KILCARR, EDITOR-AT-LARGE GENERAL MANAGER JAMES WILLIAMS COMPANY

J&L CONTRACTING LLC, SPRINGFIELD, MO OPERATION

Fleet hauls rock and dirt as well as rental construction equipment and other oversize loads

PROBLEM

SOLUTION

Hauling heavy loads not only puts a regular beat-down on commercial equipment, they also ofen require the use of some old-fashioned truck specs such as 18-speed manual transmissions.

To start with, the fleet tries to attract veteran drivers skilled in manual shifing. Williams also specs the company’s trucks with “a lot of chrome and a lot of stainless steel.”

James Williams of J&L Contracting understands such issues intimately. His fleet of 40 trucks, including 13 dump trucks, four tractors hauling “end dump” trailers, four “roll back” trucks, and 14 Caterpillar-brand tractors equipped with 13L engines, works quite hard hauling construction-related materials throughout Oklahoma and Missouri.

“Getting drivers to take pride in their ride means that they will want to take care of [the truck],” Williams explains. “We have our own wash bay on site, but our drivers will clean up their rigs on their own, too.”

While some of that equipment is outfitted with Caterpillar CX31 automated mechanical transmissions (AMT) and Eaton Corp. UltraShif AMTs, the rest feature 18-speed manual transmissions. This is because all those gears are necessary to get a 100,000-lb. load up and moving— ofen in some not-so-nice conditions. To keep those Cat trucks up and running and in great shape takes some extra work on the part of J&L’s drivers and technicians—with an unusual twist thrown in where the 18-speed transmissions are concerned.

28 AMERICAN TRUCKER / AUGUST 2015

Keeping a truck clean and sharp-looking helps at the weigh scales, Williams adds, as it’s the vehicles coated in grime with rust on the wheels that are the ones usually more apt to be pulled over for inspections. But that doesn’t mean J&L just goes for surface impressions, skimping on maintenance along the way. “We change our engine oil every 15,000 mi., check our filters frequently, and make sure all of our maintenance is up to date,” he stresses. “We have our own shop, but we also use our local Cat dealership.” When it comes to an 18-speed manual transmission, Williams says, how it gets shifed day in and day out will determine how much maintenance it will require over time. That’s why when J&L brings on a new

driver who’ll be piloting a company tractor equipped with an 18-speed manual, they get a co-pilot during their first few weeks at the helm. And that co-pilot ofen tends to be a J&L maintenance technician. “First, we run our new guys through a detailed overview of how we do things. We go over all of the paperwork that is required. [We explain to them] that they need to wear a hard hat, jeans, and boots on the job. They need to know how to run any heavy equipment that they’ll be hauling, as they’ll need to load and unload it at jobs sites,” he says.

A technician co-pilot will then be assigned to the new driver, and it is his job to closely monitor how that driver shifs the 18-speed manual gearbox. Not only will the co-pilot make sure that the driver does not overwork the clutch, he will go over other details as well.

“Those are the guys who will be tagged to fix those transmissions should anything go wrong, so that’s why we send them out with our new drivers,” Williams points out. “They will be very blunt and tell [the new drivers] exactly how to shif those 18-speed manuals properly. It’s a very good way to get the right shifing habits established at the front end, and that helps us reduce our maintenance costs over time.”

TIRE INFLATION UNDERINFLATED TIRES on commercial vehicles decrease fuel eficiency; increase downtime, maintenance and replacement tire costs; and reduce safety, says Josh Carter, CEO and co-founder of Aperia, producer of the Halo Tire Inflator, a self-powered, bolt-on inflation technology for drive and trailer axles on trucks, tractors and trailers. “Automatic tire inflation technology has been proven to deliver optimal pressure maintenance.”

By employing tire inflation optimization practices, Carter points out that tread and casing life is improved and fuel economy improvements are possible. According to FMCSA research, an increase of up to 2% in fuel eficiency can be achieved.

designed to manage tires that are both under- and overinflated, explains Matt Wilson, business unit director of controls, Hendrickson Trailer Commercial Vehicle Systems. “The system is able to respond to changes in ambient air temperature,” he explains. “When a vehicle is exposed to large swings in temperature ... the potential exists for tires to end up significantly above the desired target pressure, so TireMaax Pro will maintain the target pressure regardless of changes in ambient temperature.” Dana has introduced a tire pressure management technology for linehaul tractors. The integrated, electronically controlled internal axle system is currently undergoing road testing. It

Maintaining proper pressure leads to a boost in mpg John Morgan, senior product manager of trailer products, says the Meritor Tire Inflation System (MTIS by P.S.I.) ofers reduced tire wear, increased fuel economy, and fewer tire-related service calls. Also available is ThermALERT, a wheel-end heat-sensing technology that provides warning of abnormally high wheel-end temperatures. The Hendrickson TireMaax Pro tire inflation system has been specifically

automatically initiates periodic pressure checks, inflates tires to the optimum pressure as needed, and can also equalize pressure in all tractor tires. Daniel J. Harding, senior product engineer for Stemco, notes that the latest enhancement to the company’s Aeris automatic tire inflation system is a trailer-nose-mounted display called SmartSense that visually identifies which wheel end is leaking and includes an additional visual indicator

for wheel ends that frequently require filling. SmartSense’s zero power display information remains visible for repair personnel even on untethered trailers. Beginning later this year, the SmarTire tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) from Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems will be released as a factory-installed option on Freightliner Cascadia and Cascadia Evolution models. The system, which is also sold as an afermarket kit for retrofit on almost any commercial vehicle, joins the Bendix SmarTire solution for trailers in the company’s product line. “We are also enhancing the serviceability of the SmarTire system,” says Jon Intagliata, product manager of TPMS and trailer electronics at Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems. “New options will allow for sensor programming without the need to use a separate diagnostic tool because each wheel-mounted sensor will come with a rim label mounted externally near the valve stem with the sensor’s unique ID code printed on it. Another option when using the Bendix display will be the ability to program a sensor to simply remove 5 psi of air from the tire.” System manufacturers point out that online calculators estimate ROI based on a range of variables, including vehicle configuration, mileage, fuel economy, price of fuel, and number and cost of tires and tire-related service calls.

Urgent: Special Summer Driving Notice

To some, sunglasses are a fashion accessory…

But When Driving, These Sunglasses May Save Your Life!

Drivers’ Alert: Driving can expose you to more dangerous glare than any sunny day at the beach can… do you know how to protect yourself?

T

he sun rises and sets at peak travel periods, during the early morning and afternoon rush hours and many drivers find themselves temporarily blinded while driving directly into the glare of the sun. Deadly accidents are regularly caused by such blinding glare with danger arising from reflected light off another vehicle, the pavement, or even from waxed and oily windshields that can make matters worse. Early morning dew can exacerbate this situation. Yet, motorists struggle on despite being blinded by the sun’s glare that can cause countless accidents every year. Not all sunglasses are created equal. Protecting your eyes is serious business. With all the fancy fashion frames out there it can be easy to overlook what really matters––the lenses. So we did our research and looked to the very best in optic innovation and technology. Sometimes it does take a rocket scientist. A NASA rocket scientist. Some ordinary sunglasses can obscure your vision by exposing your eyes to harmful UV rays, blue light, and reflective glare. They can also darken useful vision-enhancing light. But now, independent research conducted by scientists from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has brought forth ground-breaking technology to help protect human eyesight from the harmful effects of

Eagle Eyes® Lens

simulation Slip on a pair of Eagle Eyes® and everything instantly appears more vivid and sharp. You’ll immediately notice that your eyes are more comfortable and relaxed and you’ll feel no need to squint. The scientifically designed sunglasses are not just fashion accessories—they are necessary to protect your eyes from those harmful rays produced by the sun during peak driving times.

solar radiation light. This superior lens technology was first discovered when NASA scientists looked to nature for a means to superior eye protection—specifically, by studying the eyes of eagles, known for their extreme visual acuity. This discovery resulted in what is now known as Eagle Eyes The Only Sunglass Technology Certified by the Space Foundation for UV and Blue-Light Eye Protection. Eagle Eyes® features the most advanced eye protection technology ever created. The TriLenium® Lens Technology offers triple-filter polarization to block 99.9% UVA and UVB—plus the added benefit of blue-light eye protection. Eagle Eyes® is the only optic technology that has earned official recognition from the Space Certification Program for this remarkable technology. Now, that’s proven science-based protection. The finest optics: And buy one, get one FREE! Eagle Eyes® has the highest customer satisfaction of any item in our 20 year history. We are so excited for you to try the Eagle Eyes® breakthrough technology that we will give you a second pair of Eagle Eyes® Navigator™ Sunglasses FREE–– a $99 value! That’s two pairs to protect your eyes with the best technology available for less than the price of one pair of traditional sunglasses. You get a pair of Navigators with stainless steel black frames and the other with stainless steel gold, plus two micro-fiber drawstring cleaning pouches are included. Keep one pair in your pocket and one in your car at all times. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. If you are not astounded with the Eagle Eyes® technology, enjoying clearer, sharper and more glare-free vision, simply return one pair within 60 days for a full refund of the purchase price. The other pair is yours to keep. No one else has such confidence

THE ORIGINAL DUMP BEDLINER

• Less sticking and freezing of loads

• Helps Detect Valve Stem leaks, Tire Damage, and Stress Cracks – KTB Liquid Tire Balance is green and will show any valve, rim, or tire leaks. This results in increased safety and less down time.
