Potholes and

POLITICIANS by Kevin Jones, editor kevin.jones@penton.com

ASIDE FROM THOSE TRUCKERS who might’ve gotten caught up in some unusual May blizzards, by the time this issue of American Trucker is out, most of us should be feeling pretty good about the beginning of summer.

Granted, summer’s not typically the best season for freight; however, if you’re still hauling afer the Great Recession, you’ve got a good perspective on what a slow freight environment really feels like. But let’s not talk about the weather, or even the economy—not much we can do about either. Rather, let’s talk about a weather- and economy-related road issue: potholes. And it’s not that there’s much exciting to say about them, though they do have some symbolic currency right now. Potholes, you see, have become a popular metaphor representing the need for the U.S. of A to wake up and realize that Eisenhower’s Interstates aren’t going to get the job done as we move further into the 21st century. If Congress can’t even agree on how to fix what we’ve got, what chance do we have to compete with growing su-

per-economies such as those of China, especially when competitors are greatly outspending the U.S. on infrastructure projects? Of course, those screaming the loud-

was an increase, and the Highway Trust Fund can’t keep up with rising construction costs. But elected oficials in Washington won’t touch a fuel tax increase with a 10-f. tanker stick.

Congress sees the need for highway investment but refuses to pay for it est about the need to spend more on America’s roads and bridges are, no surprise, the road and bridge builders and the labor unions that work for them. So some of these dire warnings need to be taken with several cubic tons of salt.

That means Congress again will kick the can down the road (the second most popular metaphor of the highway funding debate) and figure out a way to pay for what’s been promised for another few months until the money’s gone.

Finding long-term funding for highways has also been among the top priorities of the American Trucking Assns. since I started writing about the business nearly 10 years ago.

What that means for truckers is more potholes, of course—real ones. Thump.

Thing is, not much has changed. Fuel taxes, especially: Clinton (Bill) was in the White House the last time there

06 AMERICAN TRUCKER / JUNE 2015

Storybook debut By Wendy Leavitt, contributing editor

DTNA UNVEILS SELF-DRIVING INSPIRATION Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) officially presented its new autonomous truck, the Freightliner Inspiration, to the world last month, underscoring the vehicle and the company’s link to America’s “can-do” spirit with a can’t-top-this event at Hoover Dam.

Sixty high-output projectors turned the dam into North America’s largest video screen, debuting the story of the Inspiration as several hundred international news media, trucking industry analysts, and oficials looked on. “Tonight is all about inspiration,” said Martin Daum, DTNA president and CEO. “The Hoover Dam symbolizes America’s can-do spirit as little else can… [At DTNA] we are inspired by meeting the challenges faced by our customers. Inspiration drives technology leadership and ultimately customer value. Our customers are our inspiration.” The Freightliner Inspiration Truck is equipped with highway pilot sensors and computer hardware based upon a series production Freightliner Cascadia Evolution, fully certified to meet

all U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. It’s a licensed autonomous vehicle (AV) in Nevada. “Lots of the building blocks for the AV are already on the road today,” said Martin Zeilinger, director of advanced engineering for DTNA. The highway pilot links a sophisticated set of camera technology and radar systems with lane stability, collision avoidance, speed control, braking, steering, and other monitoring systems. This combination creates a Level 3 autonomous vehicle system that can perform safely under a range of highway driving conditions, DTNA noted.

“At the end of the day, the Inspiration is evolutionary, not revolutionary,” Zeilinger said. “It is a logical next step forward.” DTNA research shows that driver brainwave activity, or alertness, is 25% greater when the truck is operated in autonomous mode, a result that was reflected in the test drivers’ personal assessment of how sleepy they felt.

Volvo invests in platooning frm

Ultracapacitor use starting to grow

Volvo Group Venture Capital, a subsidiary of the Volvo Group, has invested in Peloton Technology, a Silicon Valley startup developing a truck platooning system .

Four years ago, Maxwell Technologies had an ultracapacitor-based engine start module (ESM) to show at trade shows and virtually no one knew what to do with it. But that is changing, as evidenced by the announcement that its ESM is now a factory-installed option on Kenworth Class 8 products. “Many people call an ultracapacitor ‘burst energy,’” Michael Padrnos, key accounts manager for the Eastern U.S., explained. “It’s an everyday cranking product.” Maxwell’s ESM includes up to 12 ultracapacitors that store energy to be used when starting a vehicle. The advantages are that traditional Group 31 batteries are not drained and because it’s an isolated system, the ESM will still start the vehicle even if the truck’s batteries are drained of all power. Maxwell ofers two models: the Ultra 31/900 for 4L to 6.9L engines (basically Class 3-5 vehicles) and a larger Ultra 31/1800 for 7L to 16L engines (Class

Maxwell ESM

6-8). Both models provide between 900 and 1,800 cold cranking amps at start, and they recharge in less than 15 min. The ESM works in temperatures ranging from -40 deg. F to 149 deg. F. Maxwell developed the ESM in a Group 31 shell so that it can fit easily into the onboard battery location. Each ESM is designed for 100,000 starts, which, depending on how many times during a typical day the vehicle is started, could last a minimum of six years. www.maxwell.com

The technology builds on advanced safety systems such as collision mitigation and adaptive cruise control. The Peloton system electronically couples trucks through a combination of vehicle-to-vehicle communications, radar-based active braking systems, and proprietary vehicle control algorithms. “Peloton Technology has assembled a stellar team and developed a technology-based platooning solution with the potential to save a significant amount of fuel and also increase safety for fleets,” said Jonas Landstrom, investment director and head of the Americas for Volvo Group Venture Capital. “Volvo Group Venture Capital is focused on partnering with companies that help our customers increase their bottom line through technology-based solutions.” Using the industry standard SAE Type II test, a study of Peloton’s system by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency and a major fleet showed reductions in fuel consumption of 10% for the rear commercial vehicle and by more than 4% for the front vehicle, the company said. Volvo Group also noted that other U.S. and international studies of truck platooning have shown high levels of fuel efficiency improvement. www.volvotrucks.com

Drivelines, keyless entry offered on Kenworths Kenworth has added Meritor Permalube RPL Series drivelines as an option on select new Kenworth Class 8 on-highway trucks. In addition, the company has introduced a remote keyless entry system for its T680 and T880 models. Meritor’s Permalube RPL drivelines feature permanent lubrication to help reduce operating and maintenance costs with the benefit of higher torque capacities, Kenworth said. According to Kenworth, nylon thrust washers eliminate metal contact points to prevent wear, and triple-lip seals on U-joints help keep contaminants out. Advanced sealing features include an E-coated, protective steel guard that holds the slip seal securely and guards against contaminants and debris, the company said.

WASHINGTON UPDATE

Beyond compliance: CSA bonus points? Should owner-operators and carriers get some sort of recognition and regulatory reward for going above and beyond the required basics? That’s the question the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is posing, and the agency is accepting public comment on its “Beyond Compliance” initiative through June 22. To get a better handle on the concept, American Trucker checked in with Steve Keppler, executive director of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA). CVSA represents North America’s trucking regs enforcement agencies, and while the state and local authorities often work closely with FMCSA, they are not FMCSA—and they’ve even been known to disagree with the federal agency.

As Keppler explains it, the Beyond Compliance initiative could lead to improved highway safety independently of any tinkering with established roadside practices. Keppler recently walked me through his organization’s thinking. “The best compliance is voluntary compliance,” Keppler says. “When you look at the safe fleets and the safe companies, they are proactive. Just because you comply with the regulations doesn’t mean you’re going to be safe—and the safe fleets know that.” In a letter to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration last fall, CVSA called for a pilot program to explore the possibilities, saying an incentive program could lead to “a positive sustained behavioral change” among carriers. Broadly, a pilot program would address 14 AMERICAN TRUCKER / JUNE 2015

Enforcement agencies support rewarding truckers who do more than is required.

questions such as what types of safety solutions should be eligible, how should they be evaluated, and what’s the proper government role in the process? The truck inspection program has been around for decades—since long before CSA, Keppler points out. “It’s tried, it’s true. It’s tested, it’s standardized,” he says. “Yes, we have our data issues. By and large, we have a very good, strong, uniform program across the continent. You don’t want to start playing around with that.” So CVSA is looking for “a path forward” to reward operators for making good decisions and safety investments. Keppler notes “the bell-curve efect” in enforcement, with most of the attention going to the ends of the curve: On one end of the graph, the safest fleets are praised and held up as exemplars; on the other end are those

carriers with the worst safety records. “But the ones in the middle are forgotten about, and they’re making decisions every day about where they’re putting their money,” Keppler says. “Many of them, unfortunately, view safety as a cost and not an investment. And sometimes safety is put aside just to keep the wheels moving.” The notion behind Beyond Compliance is to give trucking companies a reason to make the long-term safety investment even when immediate business demands might be pressuring them to defer that spending—especially when the competitor “down the street” isn’t doing it either. “Some people respond to enforcement and fines, and some respond to incentives. You need to have a diferent set of tools in your tool box to deal with how people are going to change their behavior for the long term,” Keppler says.

THE BUSINESS OF TRUCKING

by Tim Brady, Business Editor

Loading up your contact database is critical to securing freight opportunities

loads within the lanes you service. Yes, you need to be set up on their approved carrier list before you need freight. How is this accomplished?

FACT: When in business, you will lose customers—many times through no real fault of your own. It may be that a shipper is bought out or merges with another company, has a reduction in their business for the lanes you service, or the management changes. The reasons are numerous and varied. Customers will come and go. FACT: Micro- and small carriers that are prepared for this inevitability are the

16 AMERICAN TRUCKER / JUNE 2015

ones that continue to grow and evolve. So, how do you prepare for the time when you will lose a valued customer? Constantly and continually prospect for shippers with loads that will fit into your freight lane models. Don’t wait until you’re desperate to find a shipper. The best way to be prepared and to operate seamlessly is to always have a list of prospects on hand. You need a goto list of companies that have available

Compile a list of prospective shippers to contact. This requires more than just a name, phone number or email address. Take the time to research each prospect. Start the research process by creating a file (either digital on your computer and/or a physical file for the full research package). It’s also important to understand the process of becoming an approved carrier—you can’t do a request for proposal (RFP) without being an approved carrier.

VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.

The following information should be included in the prospect profile: • Company name, address(es), and location of originating freight • Name of decision-maker for establishing relationships and name of person responsible for assigning freight to trucking companies, plus their email, phone, and fax information • Website address and social media pages so you can track changes and see news about the company • Type of product the company manufactures or handles that works with your operation • Size of company in gross revenue per year and (when possible) number of loads shipped • By what date or dates does it accept requests to be placed on the approved carrier list? Being on the approved carrier list for a shipper is the first step necessary to haul loads. If you are not on the list, then you will be lef with empty trailers when the RFP window opens. • On what date or dates does the company send out RFPs? Some shippers only do this once per year. And some send out RFPs every six months, while a few send out quarterly. If it’s March when you need freight and RFPs are sent out in September, then it might not be the shipper to contact in March. (Although come mid-summer, if you’re still in need of additional hauling opportunities, then that’s when you’d make contact.)

• Keep notes on all conversations or correspondence (emails, faxes, etc.) you have with anyone in the company. What should you have at your fingertips when you’re ready to call a prospect? • Have your trucking company’s profile/package on your desk, including insurance, authorities, lanes, services, etc. • Have a ready explanation of how your services will benefit your prospect. • Have a pen/pencil and a notebook in front of you at all times to take notes. • Make sure you have your prospecting proposal memorized so it doesn’t sound like you’re reading it. • Leave a couple of messages on your own voice mail to warm up. • Open your prospect’s website and keep it open. • Smile and dial. If they say “no” or “not interested,” they’re not rejecting you. Just move on to the next prospect that could be a gold mine for your transportation company. To be successful in finding new customers, it’s imperative you’re prospecting on a weekly basis not just when you need more freight. Murphy’s Law of Freight Prospecting says that “you’ll find more freight when you don’t need it than you will when you do.” The more you prospect on a regular schedule, the easier the process

VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.

becomes. You become accustomed to the “no” and “not now” responses and move on to the next shipper on your prospecting list. Here’s your action list for prospecting:

1 Identify two to three potential shippers each week. 2 Research and assemble a prospect profile file for each one. 3 Call at least two of the prospects identified with the intent of being placed on their approved carrier list, and get the dates when they accept RFPs. 4 Regardless of call outcome, make sure you leave a positive impression of you and your carrier. A good rapport with each company and each contact person within that company will be very useful in the future. As any company can attest, the business environment evolves and changes. While a company may not need your services now, that can change in a year or two. Establishing a good rapport the first time can be all that’s needed during the second attempt to land them as a customer. 5 You may encounter some resistance from prospects. They’ll tell you that business is slow, or they don’t have any loads. Remember that persistence is key. Remind them you’re more interested in being placed on their approved carrier list so when business does improve and more loads are available, you’ll be ready to provide the RFP. Then continue to follow up with them.

TIRE RACK

Exaggerated

CONCERN by Kevin Rohlwing, contributing editor kevinrohlwing@comcast.net

WHEN THE NATIONAL MAXIMUM SPEED law was passed in 1974 as part of the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act, the primary purpose of the 55 mph speed limit was to reduce gasoline consumption. By the

of trucks on the highway are not capable of speeds greater than 65 mph. However, there are still a significant number of trucks that are not governed, so they can travel at speeds much higher than posted limits.

Heat-related problems arise for tires when speed is increased late 1980s, Congress had raised the maximum speed limit to 65 mph and in 1995, the authority for establishing speed limits was returned to each individual state. Since then, maximum highway speeds have ranged from 55 to 85 mph. While there is a lot of debate regarding the relationship between speed and fuel consumption, most fleets have made the decision for over-the-road drivers by governing trucks to 65 mph. Whether they are motivated by costs or safety, the fact remains that the majority

18 AMERICAN TRUCKER / JUNE 2015

With speed limits over 75 mph, the speed capability of truck tires has been called into question. In most cases, it’s just another example of investigative reporters trying to “uncover” a safety issue that potentially puts the motoring public in danger. The default speed rating for most highway truck tires is 75 mph. In fact, it’s safe to say that unless the sidewall of a truck tire or casing includes information that restricts the maximum speed, then the maximum is 75 mph.

when it comes to the performance of truck tires; when speeds are higher, the possibilities of heat-related problems are going to increase. Manufacturers have a built-in safety factor, so short-term periods where the speed may exceed the 75 mph maximum should not be a problem if the inflation pressure is suficient for the load. If the inflation pressure cannot support the weight of the vehicle, then excessive speed is only going to determine when, not if, a failure occurs. Contrary to recent investigative reports, the sky is not falling as the result of higher speed limits. Highway safety has not been compromised. Durability is the name of the game for truck tires and casings, so speed is not going to be a major factor for most fleets in North America. And when the 75 mph speed limit is exceeded for minimal distances, there is still a builtin safety factor. As long as the tire has enough air.

Heat is the single most important factor

“There is no opportunity to be less than world class in service. That’s an absolute must.”

by Kevin Jones, Editor Kelly Rhinehart, as co-owner and founder of Roady’s, spends time every day pondering where the trucking industry and his truck stops are headed, both in the near future and for the next generation. That encompasses everything from reconsidering restaurant layouts, to changes in freight delivery patterns, to how to handle trucks that run on electricity, and the potential impact of driverless trucks. But while devoting some time to plan 10 or 20 years ahead will certainly pay of for those who get it right, truck stop operators first have to tend to today and the next quarter. Surprisingly, in these digital and connected days with new apps for everything, the trend in truck stops is decidedly retro. A personal touch, it seems, is more important than technology when it comes to keeping truck drivers happy—although technology certainly plays an important role. “We’re purposefully trying to be what drivers used to like about truck stops. And what they like is old school truck stops,” Rhinehart says. “They like the independence of being in Louisiana and having a ‘gator burger,’ but they also like to go up to Seattle and have the local cofee cake. They’re stopping in truck stops 2.1 times a day, and if it’s the same thing over and over, life gets pretty tedious.” So for Roady’s locations, about 350 from coast to coast, managers feature the same 88% of oferings as the other stores, but they’re also directed to make that remaining 12% uniquely their own—“what sets you apart.”

“There is no opportunity to be less than world class in service,” he says. “That’s an absolute must.”

Roady’s routinely does parking lot surveys, and they’ve found that a lot of drivers never set foot inside the stores.

And that refocus on the customer is one of the positives that came out of the recession and trucking downturn from 2008-2010.

“They get their fuel and they go to the parking lot. But we want those guys,” Rhinehart says. “How can we meet their needs?”

“We’re embracing the truck stop. Travel centers, travel plazas. That was all a hot button for several years. What we do recognize today is truck drivers are way more professional. That’s not their carriage or demeanor, but what’s expected by their employers is way diferent than it used to be,” Rhinehart explains. “Their time demands keep getting increased with all of the administrative things they have to stay on top of. They have computers on board and electronic logs.

As a result, Roady’s has put employees in the parking lots trying everything from cleaning headlights to delivering a soda and a candy bar.

“They don’t have to come into the truck stops to use the phones or rent a computer or even to use WiFi,” he continues. “There are lots of diferent opportunities for them to be connected with their families, their banks, everything. So we need to meet them where we are.” Rhinehart tells of a restaurant remodel whose business went down with the upgrade. Turns out, removing counter seats and adding booths wasn’t what truck drivers wanted. “It makes you a better driver when you’re talking to a buddy, finding out what he’s doing and telling him what you’re doing,” he continues. “It makes the industry stronger, and those relationships can last.”

REACHING OUT And that’s exactly the strategy adopted by North America’s largest truck stop chain. “Driver service champions,” or DSCs, are now out on the fuel islands and in the parking lots at 125 Pilot Flying J locations, reports Ken Parent, chief operating officer at Pilot Flying J. DSCs help direct traffic, solve problems with fuel transactions, and make sure the driver feels welcomed—and that his time is not being wasted.

From a facilities perspective, Pilot Flying J’s new concept focuses on presenting a clean, updated look and safe, comfortable feel. The PJ Fresh Marketplace, likewise, explores healthy choices in driver food options. Technological innovations also are about providing choices to drivers, helping them get in and out quickly to be more productive in their workday—“whether they want face-to-face interaction, or to utilize the kiosk to print a receipt or reserve a shower.”

COVER STORY

Similarly, the chain is rolling out a mobile point-of-sale device, a “line buster,” that will allow a roving store clerk to just swipe a customer’s card to complete a transaction. They’re also expanding an “assisted checkout” program to provide a fast and easy self-service option.

“We’re not taking the benefits of the technology to decrease our labor,” Parent says. “We’re actually increasing our customer service representatives.” Indeed, this focus on the “personal touch” is becoming something of a “competitive differentiator” among the 2,500 or so truck stops across the United States. Darren Schulte, vice president of membership for NATSO (formerly known as the National Assn. of Truck Stop Operators), explains that his organization recently did a “snap survey” of 100 or so truck drivers at a NATSO-member location. The operator thought the main selling point of his location revolved around maintaining low fuel prices. Not so, notes Schulte. “The number one reason the drivers we surveyed said they selected this gentleman’s location? The friendliness of the staf,” he says. “Low fuel prices actually ranked third, with the quality of food in second place.” Schulte also suggests that NATSO’s research indicates that the “fundamentals” make a huge difference in the truck stop industry today, with the personal touch packaged together with clean showers, clean facilities overall, and more focus on specific customer attributes. 22 AMERICAN TRUCKER / JUNE 2015

Love’s Travel Stops

Behind the scenes, Pilot Flying J has invested in technology to greatly reduce the amount of time employees spend resolving transactions, freeing them up to spend time assisting customers, Parent notes.

An attendant at a Love’s TirePass lane is trained to check tire pressure and tread during a truck fuel stop.

“It’s really critical to understand the specific customers using your particular location,” he says. “Are they owner-operators or company drivers? Do you get a lot of pet owners?” Schulte also notes that the truck stop industry is returning to its roots in a way by splitting into two distinct camps: the full-service facility and the fuel-and-go location. “Historically, everyone tried to provide everything—washers and drivers, truck washes, repair shops, etc.,” he points out. “Today, though, with the hoursof-service rule changes made several years ago, time is money. So now drivers and fleets stop based on whether they need just fuel and food or if a longer stop for maintenance or overnight parking is needed.” Yet even the short-term “fuel-and-go” locations are deploying the personal touch, Schulte adds. “One of our members developed a ‘food while you fuel’ option so [drivers] could place an order while refueling their truck. Then it gets brought out to them by a ‘truck hop’ server,” he explains. “It’s a way to make that stop, however short in duration, a more friendly experience. And making it

more personal may convince that driver and/or fleet to use that truck stop again down the road.” CHECK YOUR TIRES, DRIVER? Speaking of returning to roots, many drivers today might be too young to remember when fuel pumps came with attendants dedicated to quick and convenient vehicle service. Those days are coming back for truckers.

Indeed, about three years ago, a Love’s focus group suggested that tire care was a critical issue, and fleets and operators needed help making sure tires were properly inflated and the tread was up to spec. The tricky part, of course, was that drivers couldn’t be stuck sitting around while the tires were being rechecked. The result is the TirePass program. Based on a technology that assesses tire pressure and tread depth with a handheld device, TirePass works from a dedicated fuel island at Love’s locations. When a truck arrives to fuel, an attendant connects all of the tires on the tractor and trailer to a tire inflation system on the island. The handheld device then communicates with the inflator, which fills the tires to the

proper pressures. As the attendant removes the hoses, he checks the tread. The sofware behind TirePass allows customers to set the tire specs for a vehicle or a fleet, so when a truck pulls up and its QR code is scanned, the inflation system is set accordingly.

TirePass is installed and expected to be operational at 90 locations by the end of summer in the first phase. Love’s is also exploring other services that might be offered at the island, although Jensen declined to reveal more details. Going forward, new Love’s locations will be built with the TirePass lane, and current locations eventually will be retrofit with the system. “These trucks are on the road all the time, and some of them—especially the trailers—don’t get back to the yards very often. So being able to keep [tabs on] casings, to track a tire through its entire life, has always been very tough,” Jensen says. “This idea was to ‘let us help you manage the tire from cradle to grave.’ The drivers appreciate it because it’s a hard, tedious job to check the tires every day. We can help make that easier for them.” CHECK YOUR OIL? Ryder doesn’t operate a national truck stop chain, but the leasing company does have more than 400 fueling lo-

And here’s the selling point: “All this happens in the time it takes the driver to fuel,” Dan Jensen, Love’s director of tire care, says. “When he’s done, we’re able to give him a report that gives all of the specifics of that visit. If a fleet is signed up, they’ll get reports that automatically let them know that they have a truck at a Love’s that has a specific tire out of spec. That gives them a chance to react to it, save some casings and some fuel consumption—all the things that come with proper inflation.”

cations around the country to service Ryder lease, rental and contract maintenance customers. Ryder is rolling out a new handheld computer system to streamline the fuel transaction process. The units are capable of reading RFID and scanning barcodes. The device captures the vehicle ID and odometer reading, among other data, and relays it to the reporting system, explains Scott Perry, Ryder’s vice president of supply management and global fuel products. “What’s unique about our model is we’re one of the few remaining full-service fueling networks,” Perry says. “We have company employees who are actually manning our service islands, interacting with our customers’ drivers, validating information around the vehicle being fueled, and then actively fueling the vehicle while they’re also performing other safety and maintenance checks as a walk-around inspection. We find that definitely leads to a higher level of checks and balances around the transaction.” Ryder’s been doing it this way for 83 years, he adds, and still sees it as an important service. The inspection points—whether engine fluids or

VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.

trailer lights—all contribute to customer uptime. And while it’s admittedly “old school,” the complex technology that comes with modern trucks demands more expertise than was required of a corner service station attendant a generation or two ago. “They definitely play a role in helping to support the proper use of diesel exhaust fluid, for instance, and they ofen get asked about lights that may come up on the dash. They definitely get asked a lot of questions about the performance of the vehicles, and they play a role in our environment of creating a write-up or a service order if they find something out of compliance,” Perry says. “They really are the eyes and the ears for interacting with the drivers, the intermediary between the driver and the shop to expedite the engagement and make sure we get that truck back on the road as quickly as possible.” And these interactions get back to the customer through the Ryder web portal. Likewise, fuel reporting is configured according to the fleet’s needs. “As the technology continues to evolve

JUNE 2015 / AMERICAN TRUCKER 23

COVER STORY

around dispenser systems and the use of RFID, and how you’re validating the transaction, we continue to look at how that can be integrated to help make that as automated and concise and clean as is possible,” he concludes. DATA, DATA EVERYWHERE Integrating vehicle telematics, routing, and fleet management systems with truck stop data—whether customer loyalty information, fueling details, or maintenance—is an obvious opportunity.

But an area where truck stop operators are especially interested in helping themselves and, more importantly, the trucking industry overall, is providing information on the availability of parking spaces. Indeed, technology already exists that can track parking spaces, keeping up with how many spots are available. With modern communications technology, truckers on the road should be able to check that parking availability. According to Roady’s Rhinehart, the hurdle is that for such a solution to be truly effective, most if not all of the spaces along a lane would need to be in the database. And that will require cooperation among the truck stop groups and even state highway departments as a uniform standard is developed and shared. Rhinehart estimates that Roady’s could develop the technology within a year, but he anticipates that an industry-wide deployment will take three to five years. Likewise, Parent hinted that Pilot Flying J has some announcements in the works for later this year featuring new technologies “that provide easy solutions to help drivers be aware of where parking is available and where potential spots are to park that night.”

24 AMERICAN TRUCKER / JUNE 2015

Pilot Flying J is also working on upgrades to its loyalty program, using technology to better target what’s important for each customer. “Since we are large, we have over 60,000 driver panel touch points per month. So scale affords us the chance to get a tremendous amount of feedback from professional drivers,” Parent says, noting a driver app designed to gather customer reaction to service and oferings, and suggestions for improvement. MORE THAN A TRUCK STOP Next-generation truck stops, while maintaining the personal touch, also will continue the trend of expanding services.

Roady’s, which is in the same family of businesses as Truckstop.com and uDrove, has a number of “tech-y” solutions available to customers, including the ability to integrate with a trucking company’s dispatching sofware or TMS. As for technology to benefit the owner-operator, the group touts itself as a “one-stop shop” for not only truck stop services, but for load matching, decision-making tools, and factoring and financing. In addition to opening more locations, Love’s is expanding oferings as well, including financial services, CNG fueling, adjacent hotels, or just rolling out on-site storage facilities. “We’re looking outside of just the travel stops,” spokeswoman Kealey Dorian says. “How can we serve drivers? We continue to examine how we can broaden what we ofer.” The truck stop business will continue to evolve along with the trucking industry, of course. “Truck stops made a ton of money of of pay phones once,” Rhinehart recalls.

Drivers can expect more self-service kiosks.

“Then we turned the phone rooms into computer rooms. Now they’re TV rooms or workout rooms.” Certainly, the business has come a long way from the days when load boards were literally that: bulletin boards with load oferings pinned to them. Then came the electronic listings and drivers racing each other from the television monitor to a pay phone, all chasing the same load. So Roady’s is keeping an eye on the growing trend in shuttling freight and last-mile handofs. Possibilities range from making parking lots more convenient for trailer drops to actually operating local delivery fleets. Pilot Flying J, likewise, is on the lookout for new opportunities. “How do we leverage technology to make it easier for the professional driver in everything that they do?” Parent concludes. “We understand the importance of the role the driver has in moving freight across America. There is a driver shortage, and we can help by just providing a great experience, show a generous amount of hospitality, and being a home away from home, in addition to a safe environment.”

The Cox fleet management team also coordinates with Cox Conserves, the company’s national sustainability program.

While its name is ofen associated with cable television, Internet and telecommunications services provider Cox Communications, Atlanta-based Cox Enterprises also incorporates Cox Automotive and Cox Media Group. Some of the company’s major brands include Autotrader, Kelley Blue Book, Manheim and Valpak. “Fleet is a shared service across all parts of Cox Enterprises,” says Jim Bigelow, director, Enterprise Fleet. “We coordinate and work to bring together the resources of fleet, operations and safety teams, and department users to field an efficient, productive and safe fleet.” What Bigelow calls a “well-rounded team” also brings to bear the resources of Manheim, a provider of vehicle remarketing services. “We’re all part of one company, so the Manheim shop managers and technicians operate under the Cox fleet umbrella,” Bigelow explains. “We’re also rolling out Chevin Fleet Solution’s FleetWave sofware system-wide through the third quarter of this year. “We issued an RFP based on a need for a system that captures fleet details across

When a supplier approaches Cox or the company identifies a new technology, the Cox Conserves team researches its environmental impact and potential for a favorable return on investment. “For example, we tested natural gas vehicles, but infrastructure and operational challenges led us to conclude they are not the right fit for our operation,” Bigelow says. On the other hand, Cox is continuing to invest in Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans, which are now specified with an engine sofware package that makes the diesel-powered vehicles even more fuel-eficient. The company is also dis-

cussing new ideas for lighter weight and more eficient aerial devices. Supplied mainly by Altec and ETI on Ford chassis, bodies and buckets now include electric-hydraulic hybrid units. Also ongoing is a pilot test of the XL Hybrids XL3 hybrid electric drive system on Chevrolet Express vans. With an anticipated ROI of about three years, XL Hybrids’ bolt-on solution may make sense for vehicles on urban routes where its regenerative braking can help save fuel.

As a shared service among all Cox companies, fleet decisions are business decisions, Bigelow notes. “For that reason,” he says, “we’re moving to standardize vehicles when it’s feasible, but only afer users’ needs are met. Simultaneously, we’re aligning replacement cycles to better manage purchasing and to take advantage of the latest and most eficient vehicle oferings.” Overall, Bigelow concludes that the Cox Enterprises fleet is the beneficiary of a world-class team of professionals. “Those resources give us the ability to do everything first class,” he says.

quired extra shop time to swap out the depleted batteries.

For many fleets, batteries are almost always an aferthought in the daily crush of trucking’s operating needs—until something goes wrong and a jump-start is required. That’s when things get expensive and not just in terms of dollars and cents.

SOLUTION

“The average cost of a jump-start is over $300,” explains David Baker, vice president of maintenance at nationwide flatbed hauler Boyd Bros. Transportation. “But that’s before you factor in the cost of vehicle downtime, much less the extra aggravation of the driver.” To try and eliminate that issue, Baker says Boyd bought the best quality lead-acid batteries on the market. Yet, the batteries on its tractors wore out in about 18 to 22 months because of the harsh environments endured by Boyd’s trucks, especially in frigid winter weather. And with its tractors on a 4- to 41/2-year trade cycle, Baker says that meant Boyd had to replace the vehicle’s entire battery set (comprised of four batteries per truck) three times per cycle. Not only did the company spend a lot of money on extra batteries, it also re-

In 2010, Boyd began preparing to switch from the diesel-fired auxiliary power units (APUs) it had been using since 2006 to ones powered by electricity. Baker says that at the time, the fleet knew it needed a diferent battery type, especially since its drivers would be relying on the APU for some 12 to 14 hours worth of power during their of-duty time. “Switching to an electrically powered APU meant doubling the truck’s battery set, increasing it from four to eight batteries,” he explains. “We couldn’t keep doing what we were doing.” For Boyd, absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries ofered the best solution. Though they cost 30 to 35% more than the lead-acid variety it used, Boyd found the AGM batteries lasted a complete tractor trade cycle and reduced roadside jumpstart incidents per winter season by over 90%. Specifically, Baker notes that the Trojan OverDrive AGM 31 battery it now specs to be factory-installed in its Navistar ProStar

VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.

tractors required only four jump-starts per week over the course of this year’s winter months versus last season’s average of 21 jump-starts per week. “With such a dramatic decrease in the number of dead batteries, our drivers avoided the unnecessary downtime of having to wait for a battery jump-start,” he says. Baker adds that the longer lifecycle of the AGM batteries has helped cut the fleet’s battery-related maintenance expenses by 50%. “We first started out using AGM batteries as replacements for depleted lead-acid units,” he explains. “We wanted to show a return on investment via retrofits first before switching over to them wholesale and in greater numbers for our battery-powered APUs.” Based on Boyd’s calculations, the AGM batteries paid for themselves in about a year because of their added longevity, durability, and reduced maintenance. Trojan says its deep-cycle OverDrive AGM 31 battery delivers 730 cold cranking amps even in extreme weather conditions. It is protected by heavy-duty plate construction; corrosion-resistant grid design; use of high-density, low-porosity paste; and tough polypropylene exterior casing.

IDLE CONTROL IDLING PRESENTS A CHALLENGE . While driver comfort is essential, idling is costly—in higher fuel expenses and accelerated engine wear, and to the environment. Increasingly, fleets are looking to integrated idle management systems offered by truck and engine manufacturers as the answer.

“Integrated idle management solutions reduce engine idling to save fuel, lower carbon output, and extend engine life,” says John Moore, Volvo Trucks product marketing manager-powertrain. “The measure of an integrated idle management solution’s value is increased fuel eficiency and lower operating costs.” “Beyond fuel and engine wear savings,”

ous parameters within its PowerSpec tool. “Customers can adjust desired idle speed to the optimal level,” explains Spencer Dell, senior marketing communications specialist. “Additionally, the idle shutdown parameter gives operators the flexibility to limit idle time for increased fuel economy while still balancing the need for cab heat and air conditioning.” All current Detroit engines include an idle shutdown timer with several modes and overrides that can be selected based on a customer’s needs. The DDEC Optimized Idle feature, activated by drivers, reduces idle time by running the engine only when it’s needed to keep oil temperature be-

Systems cut fuel and can improve aerodynamics says Kevin Baney, Kenworth chief engineer, “a not-so-obvious benefit for fleets in an integrated idle management system is that it frees up frame rail space. Packaging the system inside the vehicle means you don’t have to extend the wheelbase, which not only helps with maneuverability but also addresses the challenge of closing the tractor-trailer gap to improve aerodynamics.” Cummins enables the setting of numer-

30 AMERICAN TRUCKER / JUNE 2015

tween factory set limits, the batteries charged, and the cab and sleeper at a desired temperature. Volvo Trucks customers can enable automatic idle shutdown during the truck ordering process and choose a preprogrammed value in a range from 1 to 300 minutes. Customers also can choose to activate ambient override, which allows the engine to run and the air conditioning or heating system to operate when the outside air is above

or below a preselected temperature. Mack’s integrated idle management enables fleets to program engine shutdown parameters into the vehicle electronic control unit. These parameters, which can be set for as few as three minutes, shut the engine down once the preset idle time limit is reached. For Paccar and Cummins engines, Kenworth ofers its Idle Management System, and Peterbilt delivers the technology in a product called SmartAir. Four batteries that are isolated from the starting batteries power the factory-installed, battery-based solution. System components, integrated with existing sleeper HVAC systems in certain models, include a remote condenser installed on the exterior back wall of the sleeper, a DC compressor and evaporator. International Trucks ofers customized idle shutdown control strategies that vary according to time, ambient temperatures, and application demands. The system’s idle shutdown timer automatically shuts down the engine but leaves electrical accessories active until the key is turned of. A battery-powered HVAC system is available in sleepers. Fleets have alternatives in integrated and auxiliary idle control solutions. Based on applications and needs, these systems can save fuel and engine maintenance costs, and reduce health efects from emissions and noise.

UNTREATED DPF FRONT

TREATED DPF FRONT

LOWER YOUR COSTS OF DPF OWNERSHIP TIRED OF FIGHTING DPF REGENERATION ISSUES?

UNTREATED DPF OUTLET

There’s a simple and cost-effective solution! Independent tests prove soot production in the

TREATED DPF OUTLET

combustion chamber is reduced by 60% or more when using EnerBurn. EnerBurn will allow your diesel engine to burn the fuel more completely, thereby reducing soot production. Because EnerBurn lowers the burn temperature of carbon (soot), your DPF will automatically regenerate as the flter was designed to do. Your DPF will clean itself “on the go” keeping your truck or bus in the feld and out of the dealership for flter service. If you want to keep more money in your business by reducing DPF maintenance expenses and fuel costs, you need EnerBurn.
