PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT

Happy New Year! by Ryan Dunklau President of the Board, American Chianina Association

T

he year 2020 has definitely been a year that we won’t soon forget. But as I sit here writing this, I don’t want to reflect on the negative as much as I do the positive. There were numerous times this year that we could have laid down and given up, but we didn’t. Honestly, I am so proud of the determination that we as a beef industry have shown. Every time a door was shut on us, we took it upon ourselves to open another one. That is what makes the cattle industry something that I want to raise my kids in. I was just recently elected as the president of the board. I will be the first one to admit that I wasn’t sure if this was a position I wanted to hold. However, I am excited to tackle it head on. As most of you who know me know, I am a very blunt person; not always a personality that screams

“approachable.” However, I promise to do my best to address our member’s needs. “Your success is our reputation” has been my motto for a while and I hope to bring this to fruition with my new position. As we look forward to 2021, I am ready to face it head on and hope you are as well. Things will probably never be the way they were, but maybe that is a great way to improve ourselves as members and breeders. We are a resilient group of people who have always found a way to make the best of an average situation. That is what makes us “CATTLEMEN!”

CULP’S COMMENTS

THE WAY I SEE IT

by Ken Culp, III, Ph.D. Past Chairman of the Board, American Chianina Association

T

o say that our 2020 national show was impacted by COVID-19 would be a gross understatement. However, COVID-related cautions and concerns were not the only factor impacting the 2020 North American International Livestock Exposition. I spoke with several breeders that felt uncomfortable making plans to be in Louisville the week following the presidential election, after Louisville’s tumultuous, demonstration-packed summer. Entries in both the junior and open shows in Louisville for both Chianina and Chiangus, as well as most others, were admittedly smaller. (Only the junior steer show saw an increase in numbers.) With the exception of “junior show Sunday”, the weather in Louisville was balmy, the skies were clear, the sun shone brightly. Some people chose to remain outside. There was more room in the barn. Even so, the quality of the cattle in both the Chianina and Chiangus shows was stronger than ever. It’s difficult to imagine that increasing the number of exhibitors would have resulted in a more impressive championship lineup. There were some obvious advantages to this year’s NAILE. No one complained about being released immediately after the show. No one had to wait in line for a release. Even though the masks were cumbersome, I didn’t hear of anyone that came home with “the Louisville crud.” It seems that wearing a mask not only protected the wearer from an air borne virus, but also kept the adhesives, Powderful and paint out of our nasal passages. Jr. Heifer Show Breed

6

Entered Shown

Everyone was grateful to the staff and volunteers of both the NAILE and their respective breed associations for doing all that they could to ensure that the North American actually happened. We were grateful that the ACA could hold its national show in Louisville, particularly when so many other shows had canceled. In terms of the percentage of cattle that were entered versus exhibited, the biggest difference was found when comparing the number of Chianina heifers in the junior versus open shows. (Please reference table at the bottom of the page.) We lost significantly more Chianina heifers from the junior to the open show as compared to Chiangus. If we value two division shows (Chianina and Chiangus) we will need to continue to encourage (or perhaps offer incentives) to breeders and exhibitors to support our shows. Showing cattle is time consuming and expensive. But it is much easier to keep our shows than it is to lose them, then work to get them reinstated. Fortunately, responses to the Cattlemen’s Classic in Oklahoma City in January has been outstanding. We’ll have an outstanding show and have assembled an impressive set of sale cattle and genetic opportunities.

be found on the ACA website, www.chicattle.org, with a link on the homepage. The ACA LRP includes updated vision and mission statements, as well as six key objectives. These include: Vision The American Chianina Association will lead the beef industry by providing accurate, documentable information, education & developing youth leadership, and serving members. Mission The American Chianina Association promotes Chianina genetics, documents pedigree and performance information, supports youth development, and provides exemplary service to members. Objectives • Improve the perception and expand the acceptance of Chianina in the cattle industry by promoting Chianina to commercial cattlemen. • Develop promotional activities across the cattle industry. • Collect more performance and genetic data, integrating it into promotional, selection, evaluation and exhibition programs and activities. • Expand and increase the number of junior and youth programs and activities offered by the ACA. • Develop member education programs (for youth and adults). • Strengthen the economic stability of the organization by exploring and implementing new revenue sources for the ACA. The Long Range Plan is designed to provide direction through 2025. If you are interested in serving on an implementation team, please contact the office and identify the objective(s) in which you are most interested. The ACA Annual Membership meeting was held virtually on Thursday evening, December 10. Forty-one connections were identified, several of which included multiple people. With the exception of the 2019 Annual Membership meeting, it was one of the best turnouts that we had seen in recent years. Thanks to those who participated.

Farewell…

It has been my express privilege to have served the ACA as chairman of the board of directors for the past three years. My personal belief is that every person is bestowed with talents, skills, special abilities, interests and passions. These are your gifts

from God. What you do with these gifts, and how you choose to employ them, are your gifts to God. For the past three years, I have done my utmost to serve the ACA to the best of my ability. I wish that I could have done more to serve the membership and further the organization. I have great hope for the new team of officers and hope that they achieve great success for the ACA and its membership.

Thank You…

Having concluded my leadership role with the ACA, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank three groups of people for the support over the past three years. First, the individuals who have served on the ACA Board of Directors for the past three years. These were dedicated, hardworking, compassionate individuals who stepped up to the plate, considered new options and strategies, analyzed mountains of data, read through literally tons of paperwork, attended in-person, on-line and conference call meetings and created new programs and activities, all of which were designed to benefit the organization and its membership. Second, the ACA staff members. Jennifer, Cheryl, Heather and Dustin tirelessly serve the membership, answer countless questions on a daily basis, provide exemplary customer service and, in the case of Heather and Dustin, are on call to answer their phones and respond to email virtually 24/7. Heather, in particular, pulled out all of the stops this year in planning two different national junior heifer shows in two different parts of the country; never once complaining or losing her cool. Dustin has probably logged more miles in 2020 than any staff member in recent history which is particularly impressive, considering that there were several months in which he couldn’t travel from home. Finally, I want to thank my family. It is impossible to serve in a volunteer role without the help and support of one’s family. Every time I left home on behalf of the ACA, someone stayed behind to do chores. They were also happy to share their thoughts and opinions (some of which were solicited and most of which were appreciated.) Similar to a group of people that are related biologically, the ACA is a family. As with all families, we don’t always agree, but we always rally together to support each other, team up and collaborate for the good of the family. I hope that these families will prosper for a long time. With everyone’s support and involvement, there is nothing that we can’t accomplish. That’s the way I see it.

anceled. Postponed. Rescheduled. Limited Occupation. A few words we’ve all became far too familiar with lately as our world has been taken for a loop. We can all take our own stance of agreeing or disagreeing with the policies and restriction put into place, but what can we really do? There’s always the option to take to Facebook and add to the copious amount of complaining that’s seen on our daily scroll, but with the extra time on our plate why spend it dwelling on the negatives? There’s certainly enough negativity surrounding the situation so why not focus on the positives? One positive for those of us in the beef industry includes the higher demand for meat. During the peak of the pandemic, options for people to go and eat a meal out of the house had diminished, therefore more consumers have been forced to eat more meals at home. With that being said, consumers have a lot on their mind and the market place is one sector that has became evident in. However, today’s consumers are faced with purchasing influences that don’t necessarily coincide with one another. Historically, when presented with an economic downturn, such as the one we’re currently experiencing, consumers have become more price sensitive. Yet what’s different this time around is that consumers feel the pressure to weigh out the health aspect of their food as well. Luckily for us not all consumers have listened to the false accusations that red meat is unhealthy for them. Some numbers I’ve found, presented by Midan Marketing, show approximately 51% of shoppers are preparing 91-100% of meals at home. With that, 55% of shoppers are buying and freezing meat and chicken much more than normal and 61% of shoppers are experimenting with new ways to cook meat and chicken. Also stated, 45% of consumers are purchasing a wider variety of meat and chicken than normal. Unfortunately most of us would probably agree, even with the spike in prices and demand for beef, those extra dollars being spent aren’t finding their way into our pockets. But, if we’re focusing on positives as producers, unarguably the demand for beef is there, which I believe is half the battle. REAL Beef, it’s still what’s for dinner, let’s ride on that.

STAFF REPORTS

NOTES FROM THE FIELD By: Dustin Hurlbut, Director of Sales/Marketing, ACA Field Representative

A

s I write this, Christmas is a few days away, the temps here were 55 yesterday and today I woke up to a fullfledged blizzard and 18 below zero wind chills! We have been busy working on the -C- The Difference sale book and finishing up things for the Cattleman’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Okla. It will be here before we know it. Back in November I took off for Lima, Ohio to be at the Harvest of Excellence Sale hosted by the Winegardner/Klingaman families! It was a must see set of show heifers! If you have never been to the sale I recommend you take the trip to check it out. It is a family run operation that is along for the ride with you to get you to the backdrop and to see you succeed with the heifers after their show career is over. As Tyler said in his presale speech, they want you to win worse than you want to win and no matter what, they are just a text or call away if you have any questions along the way from feeding to fitting or breeding! It was great to see so many families going through the pens of heifers before the sale. Next it was time to head to Louisville for the National Show. It had a different look and feel to it with all the COVID restrictions in place. One thing was evident though, that through anything that is thrown the way of the livestock industry we prevail no matter how many rules or hoops we have to jump through! Our numbers were down some but the quality was definitely not! One of the most impressive line ups all week

was the champion heifer drives of the Chianina and the Chiangus shows. Congratulations to Sara Sullivan on having the Supreme dustin@chicattle.org 605.380.8052 Champion Junior Heifer of all breeds at the 2020 NAILE! Be looking for a sire test update if you had a bull in the University of Illinois sire test. The calves were early weaned in December and will be fed for 60 days until they are moved to the grow safe bunks and put on test. Be on the watch out for a field day at the University in August of 2021 for a tour and meeting for the ACA members. By the time you read this, we will be on the road to Oklahoma City for the Cattleman’s Congress. We have a lot going on with the -C- The Difference Sale on January 10th and then the Junior and Open shows on January 12th. If you can’t be there for the sale be sure to tune in through cci.live to bid and watch the sale. There will be trailers headed every direction after the sale and we can get your purchases to you. Be sure to let me know if you are in need of any cattle throughout the year from bulls to show heifers or even bred females. I would be happy to assist in any way I can. Let’s make 2021 the best year yet! See you down the road. ~ Dustin

2020 COMMERCIAL CATTLEMAN OF THE YEAR Dry Fork Ranch – Craig, Colorado This year, the ACA was honored to award the 2020 Commercial Cattleman of the Year award to Dry Fork Ranch from Craig, Colo. The Green family raises 30 registered cows which allows them to produce bulls for their commercial operation of 350 Chi-influenced cows they run on the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. They like the Chi-influence for their longevity, mothering ability and good feet that the Chianina bring to the table. There are feedlots waiting for their cattle in the fall because the calves convert so well. Chad and family believe in the genomics side of things to make sure they are producing cattle that yield and grade for their customers. Congratulations to the Green Family! | CHIANINA JOURNAL | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021

I

hope everyone is having a great start to their New Year! My name is Shea Whaley, I am 18 years old and am a senior at Eagle Grove High School. I have a strong passion for showing cattle and being an advocate in the agricultural community. I am currently serving as an At-Large Director on the American Junior Chianina Board. I have been involved with the Chianina breed for the past 3 years and I absolutely love this breed and the people associated with it! One of my favorite things about being on the board is all the people you are able to meet and connect with, who all share the same drive and passion you have for not only the Chianina breed, but also the cattle industry as a whole. November 13-18, I attended the North American International Livestock Exposition along with fellow board members. My favorite part of the week was getting to see the other board members and catching up! I also really enjoyed getting to help with check in and help in the ring during the shows! Over the five days at the North American the Chianina Association had a total of 61 head at the junior show with 42 head of Chianina females and 10 head of Chiangus females. At the open show we had a total of 63 head at the open show with 27 Chianina females, 13 Chianina bulls, 17 Chiangus females, and 6 Chiangus bulls. Congratulations to all who exhibited at the North American International Livestock Exposition. It was a very successful week! The next big event coming up for the Chianina Association is Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Okla. It’s great to see the excitement for the show and I can’t wait to see everyone there. Good luck to all who are exhibiting in Oklahoma City and we can’t wait to see you there! The 2021 National Junior Show, “Let the Good Times Roll,” will be in Chickasha, Okla., June 19th – 24th. Information on the National Junior Show can be found on the Chianina website. As more information comes out please check out our website as well as the Facebook and Instagram pages for important updates and reminders! Entry deadline is May 3 and will be here before we know it! We look forward to “Letting the Good Times Roll” in Chickasha this June!

Change Brings Great Things by Jillian Bryant, At Large Director

I

t’s safe to say this year has been different to say the least. With social distancing, mask ordinances, and cancellations of majors, 2020 has certainly taken a toll. Not only in most peoples’ daily lives, but in the livestock industry as well. This year I have been very fortunate to be able to serve as National Chianina Queen and as an At Large Director on the Junior Board as well. It has truly been a great experience even with all of the 2020 craziness. Now as far as Majors have gone, masks were required, and social distancing was pushed. I know many people aren’t a fan of either, but the industry has really come together as a whole to let the kids show. As a showman myself I cannot express how much it means to me that we are allowed to do what we love, and are supported by so many. This year’s major season may have looked

different, but the passion was still the same. The shows were exceptional as always and we owe a lot to the people that made them happen. Personally, being able to go to my showbarn everyday and work with my animals has been the one constant of 2020. I’ve been able to be a lot more hands on with every aspect of my life, and I can definitely appreciate that. Cattle have really been the forefront of my life during 2020, and I truly believe there is no better way to spend my time than being in my barn, going showing, or being involved in Chianina Association activities. All in all, 2020 has been a wild ride, but I am most definitely glad to see where 2021 takes me, and where it takes the cattle industry as well. Changes are coming, but with change brings great things.

Super Baldies‌A cross between Chiangus Bulls and Hereford Females! In the Texas rangeland, these hybrids perform and excel for our customers. The cross of Chiangus bulls with F1 females is also proving successful with calves that excel with growth and performance. Our Purebred Chiangus cattle herds perform and excel in the pastures of Texas on low inputs and when compared on the rail, continue to excel. We would love to chat with you about our cattle and what they can do for your operation. Feel free to give us a call.

A

s with all things of 2020, the look and feel of the National Show and events in Louisville were definitely different than in years past, but exhibitors came in force and brought their best for an outstanding show of high-quality animals. Numbers of cattle exhibited were down across all breeds, however, the quality in the Chianina & Chiangus shows, both junior and open, was second to none! Our members dug deep and brought the best of the best to the national stage. In the junior show, more than 60 head of heifers were exhibited on Sunday, Nov. 15. Judge Chad Holtkamp sorted his way through the cattle and selected Dunlap, Iowa native Sara Sullivan’s March 2019 heifer, JSUL Who Dat Darling 902G ET as Grand Champion Chianina Female. Whitney Walker, Prairie Grove, Ark., led the Reserve Grand Champion Heifer, JSUL Roxanne 452G ET. In the Bred & Owned Show, Grand Champion honors went to HERR Allies Mae Dream 1H, exhibited by Allison Herr, Metamora, Ohio and Reserve Grand Champion Bred & Owned Female was BWC Annie Oakley 71H, exhibited by Katy Cooper, Mayslick, Ky. The quality remained deep in the Chiangus Show as well. Kylee Myers, Wyoming, Ill., exhibited the Grand Champion Chiangus Female, LLW CARD Caroline 236G and Brooklyn Curtin, Oxford, Iowa, took home the Reserve Grand Champion Chiangus Female honors with WEIS Stella 32G. In the Bred & Owned Show, the Evans family from Campbellsburg, Ky., made a clean sweep, taking home both Bred & Owned banners. Kennedy’s heifer, GOP Greta Garbo 910G was named Grand Champion Bred & Owned Female while Brooks’ heifer, EVNS Hearts On Fire 064H, was named Reserve Grand Champion Bred & Owned Female. To top off junior show weekend, Sara Sullivan’s Champion Chianina Heifer was named Supreme Junior Heifer over all breeds, marking at least 5 times the Chianina heifer has taken home that honor! While the break between Junior and Open shows did not include the annual meetings and events of the National Show as normal, exhibitors stayed through to the open show on Wednesday, Nov. 18. More than 60 head of cattle were exhibited in the two division show and the quality again was second to none. Scott & Jared Werning of South Dakota served as judges this year and were overwhelmingly complimentary of the depth of quality of the cattle exhibited. The Chianina Bull show started the day with PRES Black Frost 906G ET, exhibited by Prescott Cattle Co., Portland, Ind. & Appalachian Angus, Waynesville, N.C., taking home Grand Champion Chianina Bull honors. The Reserve Grand Champion Chianina Bull banner went to DUNK Entitled 01H, exhibited by Dunk Cattle Co., Wayne, Neb., and Spangler Show Cattle. In the Chianina Female show, Ashtin Guyer, Robinson, Ill., led her heifer, TSSC Who’s Lizzo 907G to the winner’s circle as Grand Champion Chianina Female. Dunk Cattle Co. again found their way to the purple exhibiting the Reserve Grand Champion Chianina Female, SRR Miss Monica 10H ET. The day finished with the Chiangus show, and again the quality of cattle exhibited was superb! The Grand Champion Chiangus Bull was DAJS Black Out 93, exhibited by Evans Cattle Company, Campbellsburg, Ky.; Grand ‘Ole Place Farms, Nicholasville, Ky.; and Doug, Jane & Katy Satree, Montague, Texas. Reserve Grand Champion Chiangus Bull honors went to HIGG Allegiance 068H, exhibited by Higgins Farms, Watertown, Tenn. In the female show, GOP Greta Garbo 910G, exhibited by Kennedy Evans, Campbellsburg, Ky., was slapped as Grand Champion Chiangus Female while Cole Langston, Huntington, Ind., exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Chiangus Female, HIGG Girl Crush 93G ET. Congratulations to all the exhibitors in the junior and open shows in Louisville on an outstanding display of Chianina and Chiangus genetics.

Show Awards Herdsman of the Year Nate Tice

Each year, the exhibitors at the ACA National Show select a Herdsman of the Year. This award is given in memory of Keith Dusenberry, a well-respected long time herdsman for Rockin J Ranch in Nebraska who left the world far too soon. Voted on by their peers, this award is presented to a person who exemplifies integrity, hard work and is a true believer in the Chianina breed. Nate Tice was selected as the 2020 ACA Herdsman of the Year. Nate has worked at Sullivan Farms for 9 years. When asked to describe Nate, John Sullivan shared that “He is one of the best show barn managers in the business and possesses an all-around excellent cattle skill set. From cow-calf, to selection and matings, he is second to none. More importantly, he is a role model with integrity and a great example for Sara to look up to.” Nate has helped exhibit many champions over the years and has seen Sullivan Farms to 4 Supreme Champions at the NAILE. Nate is a Chi enthusiast and the Chianina breed is his personal favorite. Not only does he work with Sullivan Farms, he also has a cow herd of Chi-influenced cattle of his own and markets them across the country. Congratulations Nate on an honor well deserved.

T

he desire to have a career in the beef industry and a job close to home after graduating from college is how Chuck Madaris got his start in the Chianina breed. In 1976, just one day out of college, Chuck landed a job working for Ned Ellis. Mr. Ned had closed a dairy and started a beef herd, consisting of mostly dairy/Chianina cross cattle, which was fairly common in the 1970s. During this time, Chuck saw the value in the Chiangus cattle and in 1979 bought some registered Angus cows to breed to Chianina bulls. Chuck joined the Association in 1980 and registered his first calves and is still at it today. He also met his wife, Katie (Mr. Ned’s daughter), while working at the farm. And Chuck will be the first to admit that Katie is a major part of the operation. “She’s been beside me all the way through and she’s the one who

supported me in buying a few cows right at the beginning and to try and build our own operation also.” Today, Chuck & Katie operate a multi-breed cow/calf seedstock operation in partnership with their son, Charlie, and their daughter and sonin-law, Kathleen & Bradfield. Chuck believes the Chiangus breed is a true all-around breed. The cattle excel in the feedyard and on the rail, but have great maternal aspects as well. The family has a successful annual bull sale every October, but Chuck admits that didn’t happen over night. “It’s a slow process to develop a market for seedstock cattle. I’ve been at it for 40 years and it really took 25 years before I ever really had a market for bulls. You have to raise good cattle and you have to sell them and evolve it over a period of time. You start a

bull market by raising bulls to sell and selling them and then people will start to see that the bulls work and will come back again and again. But you won’t just start selling seedstock for high dollar at the beginning. You have to be willing to sell them low for a while and then build on the momentum.” Chuck said his goal has never been recognition; “his goal was to provide for his family through the cattle industry.” The passion to earnestly care for, and the passion to, year by year, select improved quality has been a character trait of Chuck Madaris at CK Cattle from the beginning. He and his family are humbly thankful for successful accomplishments through the cattle industry and great Chianina genetics.

rad got involved with the Chianina Association at an early age showing heifers at county fairs and state fairs. Today, he operates a cow/calf operation consisting of 110 head of cows. His focus is mainly on raising club calves and maternal seedstock for replacements. One of his favorite memories is

raising a Chianina heifer in 1988 that sold to Tom Federspiel and went on to be the Reserve Grand Champion Chianina heifer at the 1990 National Western Stock Show. Brad has continued to raise Chianina cattle throughout the years because they often offer that extra muscle and show ring appeal compered to other breeds. He also added

that he has made several friendships along the way that he will cherish for a lifetime. When asked what advice he would impart on new members he said, “Always strive to make your cows better.”

om Farrer got his start with Chianina cattle in 1972. He AI’d cows to 4 Continental breeds and found the best results in vigor and quality were calves sired by Chianina bulls. Today, Farrer’s Stock Farm runs 250 cows and markets club calves, bulls, females and genetic packages. He continues to raise Chianina cattle

for their show ring presence and because the older bloodlines have greater vigor. Tom’s favorite memory is judging the National Show in Louisville in 1997 and his favorite animal is Silver Dollar. When asked what advice he would give to new breeders, he said, “Try to raise what your customer group

admires, however, don’t change your breeding program just because of various results from show to show.” He also commended the board of directors for doing a good job of maintaining interest in the breed considering a changing environment and continued movement to vertical integration.

A

chance meeting in 1978 with Allan Poe from Black Champ Ranch is all it took to get Ward Lane hooked on Chianina genetics. Mr. Poe convinced Ward that he could increase weaning weights on his calves significantly with a Chianina bull. He bought his first Chianina bull in 1979 and found out that Allan Poe was right! Ward believes one of the best qualities of Chiangus cattle is their “do ability.” They raise structurally correct calves that wean heavy. “In our country, their legs and feet let them cover a lot of ground in our large pastures. The Chi cattle are smart and with the proper handling and culling are gentle and easy to work with.”

| CHIANINA JOURNAL | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021

Ward’s involvement with the breed includes serving as president of the Southwest Region Association as well as serving on the ACA Board of Directors. Ward added, “My enjoyment of being a member of the ACA is association with members who are engaged in our breed, seeing the efforts of improving the quality of the cattle year after year. My enjoyment on the ranch is having a herd of Chiangus cattle that are generations long on our ranch.” Ward’s herd of both Black and Red Chiangus are thriving in the Texas range. He adds, “Young producers have a great opportunity to develop a herd of Chi cattle. I feel that the potential

for our cattle is very good, and a young cattleman or woman will have a good future with the Chi cattle.”

What prompted you to start raising the Chianina breed Growing up, my dad and grandpa Culp had a herd of Shorthorns. My cousins were very successful Hereford breeders and exhibited the Grand Champion Steer at the 1967 Indiana State Fair. In the 1970’s, the continental breeds completely changed the cattle industry and exhibiting black crossbred steers became very popular. We needed an out-cross that would produce crossbred steers. Dad took us to visit Rob Sheets farm where we saw half-blood Chianina calves that were taller than their mothers, and who got down on their knees to nurse. In 1980, I visited Blue Sky Farm in Kearney, Mo., and purchased a ¾ black, polled Iroino X Ferrero bull calf. I named him Blue Sky Senator and showed him that fall in Louisville where he was calf champion in the Percentage Show. (Glen Klippenstein judged. At that time, the Chianina show was the largest in Louisville and lasted two days. There were two divisions shows; Fullblood and percentage. The minimum percentage registered and shown was a quarter blood.) We kept that bull until he was 8 years old. By that time, nearly all of our cows were black. What was your involvement in the association (board, committee, etc.) I am currently serving my fourth (non-consecutive) term on the ACA Board of Directors. We’ve shown at 23 National Shows (21 of which have been consecutive from 2000 through 2020) and have shown at 20 NJHS (19 of which were consecutive with Brittany, Kelsey and Laurel.) All three of our daughters have served on the Junior Board, and all three have served as the National Queen. Both Nancy and Kelsey have served on the ACA Ladies Auxiliary Board of Directors. My son-in-law, Derek, is currently serving on the ACA Board of Direc-

tors. I was honored to be selected as Herdsman of the Year in 2011.

What do you enjoy about the ACA? Although most probably don’t recognize our association’s relatively small size as an advantage, we are much more “nimble” and able to change more quickly and easily than larger associations. We are small enough that its possible to develop a personal relationship and interact with most of the other breeders across the country. The ACA is extremely service oriented and youth-focused. We have a dedicated and proficient staff. I appreciate all of these advantages. What do you feel are the best qualities of Chianina cattle? No other beef breed adds the “style” or “look” that an infusion of Chi genetics contributes. Chiangus cows are terrific mothers. They are functional, have tremendous longevity and are no-fuss cows. They have good feet and udders, don’t prolapse and last forever. I don’t believe that we’ve ever effectively marketed the maternal advantages of the Chiangus cow. Was your family involved in the operation? Dad and I purchased our first Chiangus bull (although he was called a “Percentage Chianina” in 1980.) For the past 40 years, dad provided most of the daily care of the cows. Until 2019, the show cattle all stayed in my barn. Now that Brittany, Kelsey and Laurel have completed their junior careers, my barn is relatively empty. However, Kelsey and Derek keep their barn full.

Do you have any advice for a young producer starting to raise cattle? It took me way too long to decide what kind of cattle I wanted to raise. Once I (finally) decided that I wanted to raise Chiangus breeding stock, it became much easier to focus and select for the traits that are important to me. One of the biggest advantages of Chianina and Chiangus genetics is versatility. These cattle can be successfully bred a variety of ways. There is a market for many different kinds of cattle, but I believe that its easier to focus on and raise cattle if you have one specific breeding objective in mind. Anything else you’d like to add? My involvement in the ACA and on the board of directors has resulted in some of the most rewarding experiences of my life. All three of our daughters have benefited immensely through their participation in our junior program. I have met people and made life-long friends with people from all over the country who share my interests and values. I encourage everyone to take full advantage of their membership in the ACA and the AJCA. Not only with you benefit personally, but the association and our organization will as well.

Bulletin Proposed Rule Changes to ACA Rules of Registration

The ACA Board of Directors has proposed the following rule changes for the Rules of Registration. The first reading was held at the December 2020 board meeting via Zoom.

1st reading on addition to Rules of Registration (Ineligibility) Culp discussed the omission of animals eligible and ineligible for registration within the rules of registration. Schrick moved to adopt the following rules: 1. Date of birth issue. A natural calf born less than two hundred eighty-three (283) days after the birth of its dam’s previous calf shall not be eligible for registration. 2. Uncertain or unknown parentage. Whenever the eligibility for registration of any Italian Fullblood, Chiangus or Chiford animal is in doubt because of uncertain or unknown parentage, DNA-marker-typing or blood-typing and parent verification by the Association shall be required. If through DNA-marketer-typing or blood-typing and parent verification is found to have incorrectly listed parentage, the animal will not be eligible for registration as an Italian Fullblood, Chiangus or a Chiford, respectively 3. Skin color. The skin color of all Italian Fullblood and Chiangus animals for which application for registration is made must be BLACK, except that animals having birthmarks or white hairs on black skin may be eligible for registration. An animal with white skin above the underline, in front of the navel or on leg, foot, or tail, shall not be eligible for registration. In the event that a registered animal is dis-

36

covered to have ineligible white skin, its registration shall be null and void, and the Certificate of Registration must be returned to the Association for cancellation. Sexton seconded. Motion carries. This constitutes as the first reading.

BOARD MEMBER BIOS

NEW BOARD MEMBER BIOS

Four board members were elected to 3 year terms on the Board of Directors in October. Keith Schrick was newly elected to serve at an At-Large director while Justin Tracy was re-elected to at At-Large position. Ryan Dunklau was re-elected to represent the Northwest Region and Andy Higgins was re-elected to serve the Southeast Region.

Justin Tracy – Nebraska – At Large Director It is my honor to serve a second term on Chianina Board of Directors and I am looking forward to the opportunity to meet more Chianina breeders and discuss with each of you ideas to better the breed through the Association. For those of you who aren’t familiar with my background and time working on the board, here’s a little about me. Growing up in Alliance, Nebraska, my father, Dr. Mark Tracy, DVM, was a veterinarian in one of America’s largest cow/calf practices, which afforded me an early education of this industry I have spent my life in. My brothers and I were active in junior cattle programs, showing steers at every level, which offered my first experience with Chianina cattle. Upon graduating from Kansas State University, I had the opportunity to work for many successful cattle operations. I’ve experienced programs spanning 6 breeds in every aspect of cattle production, from cow/calf to packing house, and I have seen first-hand the benefits of using Chianina-influenced genetics. I’m convinced, there is no other breed that combines maternal and carcass traits with as much flexibility to meet the needs of any program better than Chianina. This experience, in-part, is what led me and my wife, Kaylee, to focus on Chianina genetics in our own program, located in Southwest Nebraska.

During my first term on the board, I focused my attention on the expansion of commercial marketplaces by helping to create the Chianina Sire Test, for the purpose of collecting hard data on the performance of Chianina genetics in a commercial feeder cattle situation. I initiated the creation of the DNA Department to make genetic testing easier, more accessible and cost effective for our breeders. I am currently working to bring a Whole Herd Reporting program to the breeders to make recording data beneficial for the breeder and the Association. In my first term, I served as Chairman of the Genetic Testing and Abnormalities Committee and was honored to serve as Vice President of the Board of Directors in 2020, and again in 2021. I believe an expansion of commercial marketplaces, coupled with strong promotion of Chianina genetic benefits, as well as support for a strong junior program, can work in tandem to advance the goal of expanding membership. And, I hope to be a sounding board for our members to share ideas and concerns to achieve breed objectives and add benefits for our breeders.

Ryan Dunklau – Nebraska – Northwest Region Director

| CHIANINA JOURNAL | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021

Ryan Dunklau is from Wayne, NE and owns and operates Dunk Cattle Co with his wife Crystal and their four children, Hadley, Wyatt, Blayne and Kyler. While also farming,

he runs a cow/calf operation with a large Chianina influence and strives to provide customers with cattle that perform both in the show ring and in the pasture. Prior to operating Dunk Cattle Co., Ryan attended college at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and came from a large farming/ feedlot background that nurtured a love for raising functional cattle that suit his everyday life and production goals while still performing in the show ring. Ryan is excited to continue to bring a young, ambitious and open-minded perspective to the Chianina board. Additionally, he looks forward to helping Chianina cattle stay in the forefront of the show ring while continuing to improve the value of Chianina cattle in the commercial market. Aside from a young, fresh perspective, he believes young people are the future of the Chianina breed, and the key to continued success. Therefore, as an Association we need to continue to prioritize our young people and support their involvement in the Chianina Association and the cattle industry as a whole. He is excited to continue to serve you on the board, and help improve the Association that his family will continue to be involved in.

Keith Schrick – Texas – At Large Director A fourth-generation farmer/rancher, Keith Schrick has been involved in the beef industry all of this life. He showed Angus heifers in FFA

and that led him to Oklahoma State University where he received a B.S. in Agricultural Education. Keith’s involvement with the Chianina breed began in June 1974 when he began using Chianina semen on commercial and Angus cows. From that start, Keith has raised percentage and fullblood Chianina. Keith operates Schrick Land & Cattle, LTD in Millsap, Texas, in partnership with his wife Dana, and their sons, Jason & his wife Andrea and their children Jaden & Allison; and Josh and his wife Erica and their children Kagen and Kooper. Schrick Land & Cattle has been a mainstay in the Chianina breed for over 40 years. Over the years, SLC has raised and exhibited many champions at shows on the regional, state and national levels. Sons Jason and Josh were both involved with Chianina cattle growing up and that tradition is being carried on in the next generation with the grandchildren. herd of Chianina fullbloods is continuing to grow that part of their operation. The purpose of adding fullbloods back into the herd was the expand the genetic base in their Chianina and Chiangus breeding program. It is their intention to continue breeding Chianina fullbloods to strengthen overall bloodlines. “I am excited to continue to be involved in shaping the direction of the Chianina breed into the future,” Keith said. “I have seen many changes in our breed since the beginnings and I believe we are positioning our breed to play an even larger role in the future of the beef industry.”

Andy Higgins – Tennessee – Southeast Region Director Andy Higgins is a native of Watertown, Tennessee where he and his family have

been involved with Chiangus cattle for his entire life. Their herd consists of approximately 80 cows. His family markets their cattle through online sales yearly, along with private treaty sales on the farm. He received his Bachelor of Science in 2009 at Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in Agribusiness. He currently works as a realtor and auctioneer in the Middle Tennessee area with Parks Auction Company. He also has a photography business for purebred cattle sales across the Southeast. During his years as a junior member, Andy served on the AJCA Board of Directors where he held several offices including the Chairman. He has served on the ACA Board of Directors for the past three years. Andy is looking forward to serving another term to help insure the best interests of the membership while helping to promote the breed to it’s fullest extent.

Sheets moved that the ACA does not collect DNA on Top 5 at all majors. Motion died from a lack of second. Evans moved that the ACA reserves the right to collect DNA on all ACA registered animals at any time. Garrett seconded. Foster amended the motion to refer to the Rules Committee. Garrett seconded. Amendment carried. The new motion states that the Rules committee will further explore the right to collect DNA for any ACA registered animal at the ACA’s request. Garrett seconded. Motion carried. Evans moved to explore the opportunity to have a Chianina sale at the Ohio Beef Expo. Higgins seconded. Motion carried. Tracy talked about potential for a Commercial Dam yearly fee structure. After much discussion, it was tabled. Herd prefix requirements Tracy discussed consistency for herd prefixes across breeds. Digital Beef allows multiple users within one membership account. In order to maintain the integrity of each membership account, the board felt the need to assure all parties are aware of the authorized users.

This decision is retroactive. Stoppel seconded. Motion carried. Heather Counts will email the board with any NAILE updates as they become available. Foster moved to adjourn, Garrett seconded. Avg. $3,000 A day and a half before the Chuck Madaris family hosted their annual “Headquarters Sale,” Hurricane Zeta blew through, knocking down trees and power lines; bringing some rain to the region. While Zeta probably prevented some customers from physically attending the sale, bidding was still brisk and demand for CK “slick hided” cattle was very strong. The evening before, on Thursday, October 29, The Madaris and Evans families hosted a pre-sale gathering, featuring a steak dinner with all of the trimmings and some excellent local entertainment. I was pleased to recognize CK Cattle as a 40 year breeder during the Thursday evening social. During the 40 year breeder presentation, I highlighted seven aspects which I believe distinguish Chuck Madaris and contribute to his considerable success as a Chiangus breeder. These seven include: • Chuck stays true to his vision; he is committed to his breeding goals. • Chuck is a purebred breeder that thinks like a commercial man. • Chuck believes in performance testing. When the ACA undertook its Sire Test, we sought out one of the most proven, reliable bulls, CK Cowboy 2CA, to use as a benchmark sire in the ACA – University of IL sire test. • Chuck knows his customers and understands their needs. • Chuck is family oriented. CK Cattle is a multi-generational family owned and operated program. • Chuck Madaris has the utmost integrity. He is honest and

56

| CHIANINA JOURNAL | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021

true to his word. • Chuck is extremely loyal. The bonds of friendship that he forges are strong and last forever. The CK Cattle Headquarters Sale is a true production sale, featuring cow-calf pairs, bred females and yearling, long-yearling and two-year old bulls of three breeds. When Chad (Cracker) Johnson finally slammed the hammer down on the last lot, 157 lots had traded hands. The three high-selling Chiangus bulls were all two year olds; two of which had seen service in the Madaris herd this summer. The high selling bull was lot 44, a BC Total Power 2CA grandson (sired by CEF Gentle Ben 2CA), who sold to long-time Chiangus breeder and family friend, Dennis Clarahan of Iowa. This 1CA bull sold for $7,750 for half–interest, for a $15,500 evaluation. He was 24.22% Chianina blood. The second high selling Chiangus bull was the lead-off hitter in the Chiangus offering. Lot 41, who was exactly 25% Chianina blood, was out of a half-blood cow, sired by WGM Friggio 2564X (a son of Friggio I). He traded at $9,500. The third high selling Chiangus bull was lot 50, a 17.27% Chianina PCA that combined RDD FTR Direction 1655R, WOCR Double Star, CK Motivator and RDD Tracker. The gavel dropped on him at $9,250. The bargains at the sale were the Chiangus cow-calf pairs. Ranging in price from $2,100 to $3,100, most had fancy heifer calves at side. Watching the Madaris crew load out cattle after the sale is a sight to behold. Chuck offered a $50 discount on every bull sold through the sale that was settled for and loaded out the day of the sale. There was a long line of trailers waiting to take advantage of that opportunity. All of the cattle are worked from horseback. It was fun to watch the talented horsemen astride their well-trained horses work those cattle easily and quietly. After watching six pairs and four bulls loaded onto a trailer bound for Bowling Green, Ky., I asked Kathleen (Madaris) Evans if that was the volume buyer. She smiled and said “not quite.” Cattle sold into ten states. That evening, following the sale, Chuck took a group of us on a pasture tour. The fall born calves were arriving; he needed to check the pastures. I was privileged to chauffeur Wayne Miller and John Woodruff. If you’ve never had the opportunity to spend some time talking with that pair of foundation breeders, you’ve missed a real education. We followed Chuck through three pastures, processing and tagging new calves. Just before we ran out of darkness, Chuck

showed us one of his half-blood cows, sired by a WGM Italian Fullblood bull. She was an impressive specimen; structurally correct, sound, feminine fronted yet big topped and wide pinned. She wasn’t black, but wasn’t quite brindle. I’m convinced that if that type of big bodied, moderate framed half-blood cow could be produced in volume, there would be a steady market for them. Katie and her circle of friends fed all of us again that evening. The crowd that night was a “who’s who” of Chiangus breeders and former board members. It included Wayne Miller, John Woodruff, Dennis Clarahan, Val Shields, Jerry Morehead, Jan Johnson, Jerod Simpson, and, of course, all of the Madaris and Evans families. CK Cattle is truly a multi-generational, family operation. Everyone knows their job and does it easily, quietly, and seemingly effortlessly. The skills and personalities of each family member are very different; and they have put their particular skill set to good use in a most efficient way. From my perspective, Chuck is still the captain of the ship. However, one quickly realizes that he has delegated complete segments of the program to the next generation. And, once delegated, he doesn’t meddle or second guess. As a scholar of “generational differences” I found it fascinating to see how Chuck has accurately assessed the strengths and preferences of Charlie, Kathleen, and Bradfield and melded them together to the greatest benefit of the entire organization. And, it doesn’t take very long to understand the integral role that Katie plays in the program. While hers may not be the “starring role” in the production…she is so much more than a “supporting actress.” Without Katie, the show definitely would not go on. The strength of the ACA is not found in the DNA of our cattle, or even in the breed’s versatility. Rather, the real strength of our association is woven into the individual breeders and families whose fabric forms the rich tapestry of our organization. I’m grateful that the Chuck and Katie Madaris family have devoted the past 40 years to breeding and raising Chiangus cattle. They have gone far beyond the call of duty in building our breed and association.
