CEO COLUMN

A WORD FROM THE CEO by Dustin Hurlbut, CEO, American Chianina Association

H

appy New Year to everyone! It has been a little while since I have written anything for news from the road and there has been a lot happen since my last article. We have had Louisville, Cattlemen’s Congress and Denver as well as our annual meeting and everything else in between. It sure seems like the last 60 days have flown by and there have been many miles traveled and lots of nights spent in hotel rooms to start the new year! Let’s go back to November and start with Louisville. There was a great turnout for numbers in the junior and open shows held during the NAILE. We had a great crowd of members and other breeders in the barn on hand watching our show. It is so impressive when we fill the ring with our division winners to pick our champions! We always have people compliment us on how good the quality of the Chianina and Chiangus cattle are that make their way to the national show. And as always, we are highly competitive in the junior supreme champion selection. While in Louisville we held our annual membership meeting with a good turnout of members on hand to listen to staff reports and hear the numbers of registrations, transfers and memberships for the year. All are up across the board for the 2021 fiscal year! Dr. Rob Sheets also gave a presentation on moving from percentages to fractions. There was great discussion between the membership about their thoughts and concerns on this topic. After Louisville it was full steam ahead preparing for Cattlemen’s Congress, the -C- The Difference National Sale and a sire directory. The sale catalog came along great and the consignors put their best in the sale. Once the catalog was done it was time to focus on the sire directory and the

4

| CHIANINA JOURNAL | FEBRUARY 2022

bulls included did not disappoint. The bulls in this sire directory will be promoted at any event where we have a booth. Louisville, OKC, Denver and Junior Nationals are our 4 major places we set a booth up and we will also take the sire directories to Ft. Worth, Black Hills Stock Show, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic & the Ohio Beef Expo. Future plans include attending some state cattlemen’s association conventions as well. After Christmas it was off to Oklahoma City for the Cattlemen’s Congress and the -C- The Difference National Sale. We ended up with our biggest shows of the year in Oklahoma City. There was quite the buzz around the barns for how good the Chianina cattle were from top to bottom. There were many classes that the 5th place heifers could have won the class under a different judge. To me, that is a huge compliment to our breed that our classes are that deep in quality. Our champions were very well represented in the Junior and Open Supreme selection as they were all pulled in the top 8 or 9 for consideration of being named supreme. The sale saw a new excitement for us as we had the largest crowd we have had in a while. The buyers ranged from breeders to commercial cattleman from 11 different states. They averaged well with the bulls averaging $7,407, open heifers averaging $7,295 and half of a bred heifer bringing $21,000. The embryo lots averaged $5,295 per lot. A full report will be included in the Herd Reference issue of the ACJ. I was then off to Denver to setup our booth in herd sire alley. The yards are brand new and state of the art so it was nice to finally see everything coming together in Denver. The crowd wasn’t the largest, the shows weren’t the biggest

but the cattle were really good and the weather was good while we were there. We had some good visitors through the booth while we were there with people asking questions on the bulls we had on the banners and everyone took a sire directory home with them. A highlight of Denver was that our very own Glen Klippenstein was honored by the Red Meat Club as the 2022 Friend of the National Western. He had a great cheering section on hand for this honor. It was good to see so many Chi breeders in attendance. I am sure Glen was very honored to receive this award with so many of his friends who flew or drove in for the dinner. Those in attendance were John Woodroof, Myron Danner, Don Esch, Dennis Clarahan, Roger Deiter, Dwight Hossle, Heather Counts and myself. I may have missed some as there were well over 150 people in attendance. We are wrapping up our Sire Test and should be getting the data back anytime from the University of Illinois and will pass

that info on as soon as we can. As we wrap up this issue of the journal we are preparing to head to the Ft Worth Stock Show and then off to the Black Hills Stock Show and Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic in February. I will see a lot of high quality bulls in the next 60 days and there are some excellent sales coming up so if you are looking for Chianina genetics to use on your cow herd be sure to let me know if I can help in any way. I will wrap up with saying it is an honor and privilege to be selected as the next CEO. I take this position seriously and look forward to continuing to help move our association into the future and promote our breed. We have so much to offer the beef industry and I am excited and honored to continue to work with our membership to share what the Chianina breed can do. See you down the road!

Stayability of the Chianina Influence

by Justin Tracy, Vice-President & At Large Director

O

ne of my buddies recently told a friend, who had bought a young set of Chiangus cows, “I hope you like ‘em, because you’re gonna have ‘em forever.” And he’s right! The stayability of the Chianina breed is one of the most positive traits we can offer our customers. I, for one, know my friend made a wise investment in his new Chiangus herd, because continually investing in the development of females is not cost effective for any operation. This is why the stayability of Chianina Influence cattle is a highly profitable trait. Simply put, cows that stay in the herd longer make more money. Females that are still in the herd at 6 years of age are believed to have recouped the costs of their development and are generating income. The industry’s demand for higher growth rates and higher milk production has made re-breeding more difficult for many types of cattle. But, the Chi-Influence can help many producers overcome these issues. Fertility is the main factor used when determining a cow’s stayability. Obviously, if she breeds in the desired calving range, carries a calf every year, and raises a heavy calf, she is a valuable producer. But there are many factors to consider in a cow’s ability to stay in the herd for an extended period of time. Structure, foot quality, udder quality, teat size, docility and body condition score all factor into the longevity of a cow and how well she produces. These are all attributes of the Chianina Influence that we, as producers, know and love. Keeping breeding bulls and replacement females out of cows that have remained in the herd for many years is a good way to increase the stayability within your own herd, and add market value for your customer. Do the math on your cow families and discover what percent of cows make it to 6 years, 10 years or 15 years of age, as valuable producers. Then check that against the industry average. Chances are, you’ll find you are sitting on a goldmine in terms of marketability when it comes to fertility and stayability. When evaluating my own herd, I see the stark difference between the few 10-12 year old Non-Chi-Influenced cows that still remain, that are at the end of their production capabilities, and the many 10-12 year old Chianina cows that appear to be in the prime of life, and are still highly productive. The difference in value is undeniable. So, as we all get ready to sell our bulls this spring, consider offering some stayability data to your potential buyers to give them an idea of the fertility and longevity the Chianina breed has to offer so they, too, can take advantage of the highly productive stayability of the Chianina Influence.

2022 has brought a lot of early excitement, especially being that it’s only January! What’s that mean moving forward? Momentum. When properly capitalized on, momentum leads to growth, change and success. I think this rings true for the Auxiliary. Through the pandemic, the Ladies Auxiliary has really taken advantage of opportunities to grow and change and we’re excited to continue down this path. As mentioned in previous articles, we’ve elected to transition our focus over to having a larger footprint during the National Junior Heifer Show. For almost 50 years, the ACLA has awarded and presented scholarships to high school seniors at the NJHS, and although this isn’t changing, the number of other things we do during this week is. We will host our 2nd Annual “Come as You Are” Social, moving away from the luncheon previously held at the North American. Discussions are being finalized regarding a silent auction and we will continue offering our brand t-shirts and cookbooks. All money raised goes toward scholarships and the queen’s expenses. Speaking of queen, the Auxiliary will also be conducting interviews in Louisville, during Junior Nationals, for the ACA National Queen and Princess. Applications are due May 15th to me, kelseyculpevans@gmail.com. We continue to have a tremendous duo of young ladies serve our breed each year as royalty. Both Hannah Zeigler and Kyal Browne have done excellent work so far during their reign and are very comfortable managing their responsibilities. On behalf of the entire Auxiliary, thank you for such great representation and dedication to your duties. Scholarship applications are available online. Visit chicattle.org and go to the Auxiliary tab to access. If you have any questions, please contact Sue Comer. Happy Calving!

Down the Road

by Taylor Pinkerton, Northeast Region Director Hey y’all! Here in Indiana snow is starting to fall as winter is digging in its heels. Calving is right around the corner and another semester is starting for me here at Purdue. As I think ahead to this summer, it’s hard to believe that it’s going to be my last Junior Nationals as a board member; something that really doesn’t feel real. Let’s take a step back in time –June of 2014. I was 12, small, shy, with an older brother just starting his tenure on the Junior Board. Someone mentioned to my parents that I should run for the Chi Princess, and as luck would have it, suddenly there I was with a tiara on my head in the middle of the show ring at Junior Nationals in Grand Island. I served as the Chi Princess for 2 years, giving me a sideline view to the Junior Board and everything that came with it. I saw every smile, every word of encouragement, and the true sense of family that every kid on the board felt. It was then that I knew I would be part of something bigger than myself when I was older. Fast forward to 2019, Des Moines, Iowa. It was there that I made the decision to run for the AJCA Board of Directors as a senior in high school, so excited to start on a new adventure as I hoped that I would be able to serve the association that I grew up in. There I found myself again, in the middle of a show ring, wearing something much better than a tiara: a purple blazer. I hoped that as a board member I would be able to share my love for all things Chi cattle and give others the same experience that I was so lucky to have as a kid. What I found, however, was that I was able to do so much more than that. Looking back over the past 3 years, I truly couldn’t be more thankful for the experiences and opportunities that the Chianina Association has given me. The relationships that I’ve been able to form with so many families and individuals are ones that I know will last a lifetime and will continue to serve me well beyond my years as a junior. It’s given me the chance to connect with so many people within this industry, as well as advocate and produce change within the breed. It’s given me friends, another family, and so many mentors, all while allowing me to gain leadership experience and positively impact everyone I’ve gotten the chance to be around. These are things that I will carry with me my entire life, and things that not everyone is lucky enough to learn and experience. As my time on the board draws to a close, I find myself looking down the road into the future. I couldn’t be more thankful for the experiences I’ve had and the people that I’ve met, and this experience is something that I wish I could share with so many other individuals, but the best thing I can say is to take the chance, run for the board, and you have the potential to grow in so many ways.

BOARD MEMBER BIOS

NEW BOARD MEMBER BIOS Four new board members were elected to 3 year terms on the Board of Directors in October. Colton Prescott was elected to serve the Northeast Region. Neal Branscum, Nate Tice & Jeff Miller were all elected to serve as At-Large directors.

Colton Prescott – Indiana – Northeast Region Director Prescott Cattle Company was started in 2010 by Colton and Hunter Prescott as a multi-breed program. We have since made it our focus to raise high quality Chianina and Chiangus cattle. Today a majority of our cows are all either Chi or Chiangus. We have been selling and showing Chianina cattle at the local, state and national level for the past 8 years. We plan to keep expanding our operation in the future and keep getting our customers involved with the Chi Association at every level of competition. We look forward to working with other breeders across the country in various activities to help educate and help others realize the quality of cattle within this breed. While serving on the board of directors, I hope to accomplish many things. First, I plan to educate cattle enthusiasts, and breeders in other breeds, about the qualities of the breed. Some cattle producers in other breeds make negative comments from time to time about our breed. We need to make it a point to educate them about the qualities and advantages they gain through incorporating some of our genetics into their composite breeds. I also would like to help develop new programs that can help breeders, and junior members, market their cattle at state and national shows. Some of these programs would be a good way to bring more young and upcoming families

18

| CHIANINA JOURNAL | FEBRUARY 2022

into our breed and to show Chianina and Chiangus cattle. Lastly, I would also like to get feedback from the different producers in our region and see what we can do as a board to help them in any way that we can. Developing events and different programs could make a major impact on the Chianina association, as well as the cattle industry in general.

Neal Branscum – Kentucky – At Large Director The History of Ard Ridge Cattle Company dates back to the late 90’s. We have been members and involved in the ACA since the early 90’s and now my youngest, Kat Branscum, is a Junior member who will continue to breed and support Chi influenced cattle moving forward. I see the Chianina influenced cattle having advantages especially in the Composite space for maternal longevity, foot and udder quality, while the male counterparts are athletic and work in diverse conditions. As a member of the board I would like to see our breed and Association continue to grow and support youth programs but also increase commercial relevance and get the message to the right targets for the value of the CHI influence in all sectors of beef production. Chiangus bulls are loaded with muscle and athletic breeding ability and the Chiangus cow is the longest lasting and most productive cow available.

Nate Tice – Iowa – At Large Director Growing up in eastern Pennsylvania, my connection with the Chianina breed started at an early age. I grew up exhibiting Chi-influenced heifers and steers and my roots only progressed from there. I grew up just down the road from Tim Schaeffer and what started as two young boys with big dreams evolved into an operation that raises and promotes Chianina genetics. Schaeffer-Tice was founded in 2007 and has quickly found success at all levels. Schaeffer-Tice enjoys the opportunity to work with young exhibitors and their families and help them achieve success. Currently, I am the show barn manager at Sullivan Farms where we have produced numerous national champions. I was also selected by my peers as the 2020 Chianina Herdsman of the Year. Serving on ACA board of directors next to my friends and colleagues will truly be an honor. As someone who has experienced all facets of the industry, I know the experience and knowledge that I bring to the table would be beneficial in helping the breed grow. In a time that is critical for agriculture, in particular the livestock sector, I think it is important to appeal and listen to all cattlemen and women of the breed and continue to grow involvement through registrations as well as members.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS CONT..... Jeff Miller – Indiana – At Large Director My dad, as a young man, started with two Angus heifers with his brothers and the herd grew to approximately 100-150 brood cows. My brothers and I all showed cattle through our 4-H careers and finally won the Indiana State Fair Steer Show in 1976. After all of us boys finished 4-H, we concentrated on selling show steers and heifers. We sold the first

Supreme Champion Heifer at the Indiana State Fair. We sold her for $1,500. She was a Chi cross. From there our family has sold show cattle to almost every state in the Union. I’m proud of what I do and am very blessed to have been able to have friends within this breed of cattle that I will have my entire life. I believe the Chianina breed has always been one of the premier breeds of our industry. But I feel like we’ve wanted to be like other breeds instead of our own unique breed. Chianina influence is probably in a very high percent of the 4-H Junior steers and heifers that make it to the backdrop pictures, all the way from county fairs to Denver.

The Chianina breed adds style and longevity to Chianina influenced breeding stock. I’m not saying the show ring is our answer, but we have to have numbers to raise some eyebrows. I’ve always loved the Chianina breed, and what really makes it exciting to me is the fact you can cross them with anything and see an improvement that first cross. As a member of the board I hope to build unity among other breeders and board members. We’ve all got our own agendas that work best for our part of the country, so let’s strive to get everyone on the same page of raising good quality Chianina cattle, no matter the percentage or color.

2021 ACA National Show Awards 40-Year Members

T

he ACA celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2012 and every year since has honored those members who have maintained membership for 40 years. This year, we were privileged to honor 11 members. Recipients of the 40 Year award are: • Fitzpatrick Chianina/ Thomas C. Fitzpatrick, West Terre Haute, IN • Bret Whitten, Bovina, TX • Oak Ridge Farms Inc./Rick

• • • • • •

Seehase, Logansport, IN Larry Wayne Ott & Family, Avilla, IN Mid Continent Farm/Gregg Stewart, Washington, KS Gehrke Farms/Garland Gehrke Family, Delavan, IL Aimee Dusenberry Wilkins, Bennett, IA Guyer Cattle Co./David Guyer & Family, Robinson, IL JB Farms/Jeff Boddicker, Newhall, IA

Excerpts of information submitted by some of the honorees is included below. We hope you enjoy reading and learning a little bit about these 40 Year members and their commitment to the breed.

Gehrke Farms/Garland Gehrke Family – Delavan, Illinois What prompted you to start raising the Chianina breed? Chianina cattle were very unique at the time. The cattle possessed an athletic quality and were very lean.

Was your family involved in the operation? Yes, we were all involved. We grew up on a farm and it gave us an excellent opportunity to raise cattle.

What was your involvement in the association? My sister, Georgia, was a Chianina Queen. Our family also helped organize the 2010 Junior National in Springfield.

Do you have any advise for a young producer starting to raise cattle? People love to eat beef. The cattle industry can open many opportunities for a cattle producer.

What do you enjoy about the ACA? All of our family grew up showing cattle. The fellowship between cattle breeders within our breed is one that is strong and welcoming. What do you feel are the best qualities of Chianina cattle? Chianina bulls can change a cow’s calf in her first mating faster than any breed available. The cows longevity and udder quality are some of the best.

Anything else you’d like to add? I wish my mom was able to be with me to accept our breeder award. Kathie was an integral part of our operation and enjoyed being involved in the Chianina Association. In closing, I would like to thank my father, Garland. He gave me the opportunity to stay involved in the cattle industry. Three long-time breeders who heavily influenced my

decision and desire to breed Chianina cattle were Jerry Adamson, Roger Deiter and Barb Ohlrichs. I have met many people in the breed throughout our 40 years. Admiration and respect are two things I’m proud to say have developed in my friendships. God bless and may Chianina cattle strive in the future.

Jody Foster congratulates Troy Gehrke of Gehrke Farms on reaching the 40 year membership milestone. FEBRUARY 2022 | CHIANINA JOURNAL |

2021 ACA National Show Awards Satree Show Cattle/Doug & Jane Satree – Montague, Texas What prompted you to start raising the Chianina breed? In 1981 Chianina genetics were the “deal” and the hot breed for show steers!! Doug was the herdsman for Hartman Cattle Company which focused on Chianina breeding cattle and show steers. Those big white Chianina bulls were all the rage and black half-blood Chi bulls were the sire of most steer show champions. After moving on from Hartmans our focus was raising show steers which were mostly out of Chianina based bulls. What was your involvement in the association? An active member – since the mid1990s we have been active in raising and showing Chianina breeding cattle with our first National Show Grand Champion in 1999. Our daughter Katy participated in the long term planning meetings in 2020. What do you enjoy about the ACA? We love the cattle. We love the diversity of the people. The ACA mem-

bership is made up of people who are dedicated to the breed and to raising good quality cattle. The staff is great – helpful, friendly, knowledgeable and dedicated to the Chianina breed. It is a member focused association. What do you feel are the best qualities of Chianina cattle? • Calving Ease • Hybrid Vigor • Added substance/muscle Is your family involved in the operation? Our daughter Katy and her husband Sam Rucker are very involved in the operation. Katy owns numerous Chianina and Chiangus cattle. Do you have any advice for a young producer starting to raise cattle? • Learn from others • Pay attention to what is working for the programs you respect and would like to emulate • Keep your integrity and stay within

your values – stay true to yourself and your program • Enjoy your successes and learn from your challenges Anything else you’d like to add? We can’t believe it has been 40 years since we started raising Chianina cattle. We truly enjoyed our involvement with the Chianina breed, fellow Chianina breeders and the ACA.

Fullblood Chianina cattle have been a staple at SLC since the 1970s. We invite you to visit the ranch and view the cattle. We have bulls and females, both fullblood and Chiangus, for sale at all times. The Schrick Family Ranch located in Millsap, TX • 817-597-8970
