In the beef industry, the term “show arena means different things depending on your focus. The show ring on the show circuit is important. But in the long term, cattle that perform in the show arena called the PASTURE, and on the rail, are vital to the success of the Chianina & Chiangus breeds. Our Purebred Chiangus cattle herds perform and excel in the pastures of Texas on low inputs and when compared on the rail, continue to excel.

CULP’S COMMENTS

THE WAY I SEE IT

by Ken Culp, III, Ph.D. Chairman of the Board, American Chianina Association

F

or most of us, 2020 has become a year filled with uncertainty and change. Both uncertainty and change cause stress. For someone who is accustomed to planning, the most stressful aspect of this year is the inability to plan and organize. Through COVID-19 and social distancing, the ACA staff has remained steadfast, hard-working and committed. They are committed to the organization, their jobs and to the breeders whose memberships and registrations fund their salaries. Unlike virtually every other breed association, the ACA did not ever close its doors; the office remained open every single day. Jennifer, Cheryl, Heather and Dustin were always accessible and available by phone, text or email and continued to serve the membership. Registrations continued to be mailed out on the same day that they were received. Advertising was sold, memberships were processed, calls were answered, members were serviced. In short, it was business as usual. And, perhaps most significantly, Heather worked diligently, collaborating with Lindsey Broek from the AMAA, to ensure that a new home was found for the 2020 National Junior Heifer Show. After receiving the news in early May that we couldn’t go to Lima, Heather pulled out all of the stops to locate a new venue that not only met all of our criteria, but was located in a state with a low COVID incidence that also had relaxed (or at least reasonable) restrictions. The 2020 NJHS was a rousing success; truly a team effort. Many thanks to Heather, Lindsey, Dustin, Josh, ACA interns Megan Vanderbur and Addie Shaffer, as well as the countless volunteers who helped pull it together. We’re looking forward to 2021 in Chickasha, OK. The 2020 NJHS set several records. First, the percentage of “drop outs” (cattle entered that didn’t show up at the show) was probably the lowest in history. People were looking for a place to show their cattle. Second, we probably had the largest number of fat steers of any junior national show in history.

4

| CHIANINA JOURNAL | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2020

The quality of cattle was very high; the classes were exceptionally deep. Three contests (judging, quiz bowl and fitting) were canceled, and three contests (speech, salesmanship and photography) were conducted virtually. Showmanship was conducted in the traditional way. Thanks to EVERYONE (staff, board members, exhibitors, their families and spectators) for their help and support. The ACA Board has remained busy and active all spring and summer. Our two-day spring board meeting was conducted via Zoom with eleven of the 12 board members participating. Nine of us gathered in Sioux Falls for the summer board meeting. Some of our notable accomplishments from these two meetings are as follows: Creation of the ACA DNA Department The ACA has been processing DNA for the Black Hereford Association for several years. With the technological advances available to progressive cattlemen, and the requirement for all bulls that sire calves registered in the ACA Herdbook, as well as all donor dams, to have DNA on file, it only made sense for the ACA to offer this service to ACA members. Membership Benefits Another big change is that the ACA will no longer be offering member and non-member rates for registrations and transfers. (Non-member rates have been triple member rates.) Beginning September 1, 2020, only active members of the Association will be able to register and transfer cattle. The adult membership/activity fee is $100 and the junior membership is $50 followed by a yearly $25 activity fee. The ACA is a member-driven organization. Our two primary revenue streams are registrations/transfers and memberships. We hope that this policy will expand our membership numbers and also help keep everyone informed. (Members receive a complimentary subscription to the American Chianina Journal.)

Cow Catch Up A registration moratorium has been offered through August 31. If you need to catch up on registering some cows that either slipped through the cracks, or you initially neglected to register, you can do so now without penalty. But hurry! This offer ends on August 31, 2020. (The penalty for registering cattle over two years of age is waived.) Multi-Generational Registration Discount Ultra-low percentage Chianina cattle (those with less than 6.25% Chianina blood) almost always have more Chianina blood than can be documented, simply because all of the cattle in their pedigree have not been registered. However, the cost of registering multiple generations of a cow family can be costly. Through August 31, a special registration rate is being offered. Pay the normal price to register a calf, but pay only $25 per generation to register its dam, grand-dam, great-grand-dam, etc. Steer Rewards Program New for 2021, a multi-breed Junior National for steers is being planned. Be sure to register your steers; this Junior National will be a qualifying show for the Steer Rewards Program. Chianina steers that place in the Top 5 of state fairs and national shows qualify for cash awards. Junior All-American Points Program The Junior All-American Points Program began on May 1, 2020 and will run through April 30, 2021. State shows, state junior shows, ACA Regional Shows, the National Junior Show and the junior shows at Louisville, Denver, Ft. Worth the World Beef Expo (and any other national junior show) are all designated as point shows. Each state is encouraged to organize its own state show. Be sure to send the results to Heather for both the junior and open shows. If numbers warrant, select champions in both Chianina and Chiangus divisions. State Shows With the overwhelming majority of county fairs either canceled, or open only to youth exhibitors, it’s been a challenge for many states to schedule a state show. (I called 10 different counties trying to find one that could host our Kentucky State ACA Show.) In Kentucky, we’ve decided to hold our state show in the fall. In this way, most of us will also have spring calves weaned and broke to lead; showing them will bolster numbers and also help get them ready for sale or to show at the NAILE.

Egg Extravaganza Larry Garrett is coordinating an ACA Egg Extravaganza, which will be conducted in Louisville this fall. Donations are being sought in three divisions: Chianina, Chiangus and Italian Fullblood. The resulting calves will be exhibited at the 2022 Egg Extravaganza Show, held in conjunction with the Open Show at the North American. Half of the money raised will be donated to the ACA and will be split as follows: • 40% Promotion, Marketing, Advertising & Videos • 20% Sire Test, Steer Rewards, Show Support • 20% Junior Board Travel • 20% Rainy Day Fund/Building & Grounds The other half of the money will be paid out as premiums to the winners. Please contact Larry Garrett if you would like to donate one or more egg packages. Long Range Planning Committee The ACA Long Range Planning Committee will meet on September 17 and 18. The resulting plan will direct the work of the organization for the next three to five years. The LRP Committee consists of juniors and adults, representing every faction of the association and its membership. Additionally, external consultants will participate to help provide additional perspectives and guidance. The Long Range Plan will be presented at the 2020 National Membership meeting in Louisville on Tuesday, November 17. We hope to see you there. These are challenging times. The resilience of our staff, board members, association members and breeders continues to amaze and impress. We’ve all had to find new ways of doing business. “The only constant is change.” Our ability to adapt, both as an association and as individual breeders, will determine our levels of success, profitability and survivability over the next several years. We can’t continue to travel the same path, if, in fact, the same path even exists. We must adapt in order to survive. The number of “pop up shows” that have been scheduled on the heels of canceled state fairs is a testament to our ability to react, regroup and move forward. I’m confident that the ACA will chart a new course and continue moving forward, exploring new ways to support breeders, provide opportunities for members, expand marketing strategies and promote ACA genetics. We’re all in this together. It will require the help and support of the membership to ensure our success. That’s the way I see it.

STAFF REPORTS

NOTES FROM THE FIELD By: Dustin Hurlbut, Director of Sales/Marketing, ACA Field Representative

W

ill this so-called pandemic ever let us get back to our way of life? In the livestock industry we have never left normal. We still get up every day to do chores, breed cows and take care of our animals. If 2020 has proved anything it is that the agricultural industry is resilient in everything that is thrown at us. It doesn’t matter if you sell calves off the cow, background calves, finish your calves, sell seedstock or sell show cattle, we have all had to adapt. We always do! With that being said I have been able to start traveling again! My first outing was Livin’ on Summetime in Sioux Falls, SD for the National Jr Heifer show. It is always a long hot week and mother nature always throws a wrinkle in the week no matter the location. Yes, things were different with less contests and less gatherings of the exhibitors, but one thing is for sure, everyone was grateful to have a show to exhibit at. The quality of the stock gets better and deeper every year which is a testament of the dedication that the breeders put into mating decisions and the everyday care from day 1 of these cattle. We all know one bad day in a show heifer’s or steer’s life can ruin the end goals for the exhibitors. So, my hats off to all the breeders who see these cattle thru from breeding decisions to calving to weaning and beyond, it’s not easy! After Junior Nationals I headed off to southeast Iowa for a couple herd visits. First stop was Sexton Cattle Co. The Empire calves look great! I saw Empire heifers that they bred and they are impressive; they were uniform, good footed and maternal looking. I will be excited to see them next summer calved out and raising calves. Then we headed out to another pasture to see the Empire calves. Wow! You want to talk about a bull that stamps his calves! I would say he is an all-around bull to look at using whether you are looking at raising seedstock or some show heifers. The bull calves were stout, sound, consistent

with added eye appeal. If you are out and about looking at cattle be sure to give Lyle or Stephanie a call; they would love to show you dustin@chicattle.org around and it is definitely worth the 605.380.8052 time to stop. Next I stopped by Randall’s for a new member recruitment and to answer questions on getting their herd caught up on registrations. Then I was off to meet with Dennis Clarahan. He asked me to stop and talk with and meet a good friend of his, G. Walker. It was a quick stop but a good one. G. had a lot going on the day I stopped by but it was well worth the stop. I will definitely be stopping back to see the cow herd. Last stop of the trip was Clarahan Farms and they were working a group of pairs when I got there. Running them through and pouring them for flies then hauling them to a different pasture. Dennis told me to get on the ranger with him and away we went looking at pairs, herd bulls and replacement heifers. We spent 3 hours on the ranger going from pasture to pasture looking at high quality Chiangus cattle. It was mostly all connected and in the back pasture Dennis pointed out to me the eagle nest that has been there for 5 years. They finish all their calves that they don’t keep for bulls or replacement females. Definitely worth the stop to see the Clarahan’s operation. If you’re looking for a herd bull be sure to watch for their bull sale the end of March every year. Dennis also told me that people often ask him if he could live anywhere where would it be and he always says Harper, IA! As always, the cattle are great but the people are better!

very breed association is a community of like-minded people that come together for a common interest. At the Chianina Association, our versatile breed allows our community to be comprised of breeders of all sizes that encompass every method of cattle production. But in order to build and fortify a strong association that supports all members and lasts well into the future, development and growth must come in the form of involvement, communication and leadership from within the community. Registrations are the simplest way to build a solid foundation. Registrations increase numbers and memberships, which brings dollars to the association to form new programs and create more marketing and sale avenues. If you are a breeder who registers only a few of your best animals, consider taking advantage of the Cow Catch Up Program until August 31, and register a few more. Register your Chianina steers and use the Steer Rewards Program to promote your product to junior members and make ties with young people and their families. Participation in shows and expo sales allows breeders to gain exposure while building a larger marketplace for individual operations and the breed. Attending these shows and sales helps make new client connections, meet new breeders, find new genetics and strengthen the Chianina divisions. More exposure for your product will ultimately mean more sales for your operation, which in turn brings in new members and more funding for the Chianina community. Engagement with juniors will encourage them to become members or get more involved in the breed, which ultimately builds markets at the local and regional level. When you sell a Chianina animal to a junior family, register and transfer that animal to help a young person get started in the breed. Offer advice and guidance to a family that may be looking for a mentor, and encourage them to get involved in regional and national competition. The Chianina Association has a strong junior program which can greatly enrich the experience of junior families. And strong youth involvement ensures the prosperity of the community for the future. Communication with local and national representatives about your goals, needs, and ideas helps shape the association’s agenda. Each board member brings his or her own set of ideas and perspectives to the job, but hearing from individual producers helps form a well-rounded approach to create programs tailored to suit the needs of all its members. If we bring a “we” approach to shaping our community, we can build the association to encompass solutions that work for breeders in all sectors of production. Leadership at the local, state or national level will bring the change you hope

BOARDS OF DIRECTORS

The Strength of Community‌Continued to see. When we each take on a leadership role, we can gain exposure for our operations while actively shaping our community for the better. Volunteering with your local 4-H or FFA chapter can help develop young peoples’ love and understanding of the industry. Starting a state Chianina association, or becoming a state officer in an established state association, can help build markets and involvement, maintain or create local Chianina shows and sales, and help connect producers with customers. Running for national office will offer an opportunity to strategize with other board members and producers on a national level to build the breed into something stronger than it is today.

As busy cattle producers we may not all have time to spare, but we all have individual talents and unique perspectives that, when shared, can help strengthen our community and propel our breed forward. When we all do our part, we can build a strong Chianina community.

Things I could not be more excited to do: 1. Serve as the 2020-2021 AJCA President!

H

i everyone, I’m Taylor Pinkerton and I was just elected as your AJCA President, and I could not be more excited for the year ahead. I hope everyone had a great time at this year’s Junior National show in Sioux Falls! In 2009, my family crammed into my dad’s pickup and headed to Springfield, IL for our first ever Junior Nationals. When we got there, we had no idea what we had gotten ourselves into. My brother’s heifer was in raging heat during the show, my parents lost me more than a few times around the fairgrounds, and we ended most days dirty, sweaty and with a huge smile. That was the first of 14 Chi/Maine Junior Nationals in a row. Every summer, we pack up pretty much everything we own for my absolute favorite week of the summer. There’s nothing like the heat of competition, good food and the best people this industry has to offer. Over the years, I have served as the ACA Princess, made some of the best friends, and now, I get the privilege of serving as the President of the AJCA – something I’ve dreamed about doing since I was 12. While this year has looked different than most, I believe that it has made every moment, no matter how small, that much sweeter. We were so lucky to have been able to host this year’s show in Sioux Falls, and I am so excited to get things rolling for the upcoming year with the rest of the junior board. Some days, I find myself thinking about how easy it would be for it all to be gone – the laughs with my dad, the excitement of seeing my friends at shows, the lessons learned from the work in the barn. If there’s anything I have learned from being stuck at home for the past 3 months, it’s that there’s no replacement for some peace and quiet in the barn, and no replacement for what showing cattle instills in each of us. I can’t wait for the upcoming year, and hope to see you all at NAILE!

Livin’ for Summertime – Huge Success by Payton Jackson, Public Relations Officer

T

he 2020 Maine/Chi Junior Nationals was scheduled to take place in Lima, Ohio. However, due to COVID-19, we learned that we would no longer be Livin’ on Lima Time for Junior Nationals. This was heartbreaking! Livestock exhibitors worked all spring to get their cattle ready for their state fair. However, many were canceled due to the pandemic. Hearing the news of yet another show canceled and preventing us from showing off our hard work was devastating. Thankfully, the dedicated American Chianina Association staff quickly found Sioux Falls, SD as the new host site. A huge thank you is needed for everyone who had a hand in putting on this junior national. Hundreds of livestock families made the trip to the Mount Rushmore State to exhibit their cattle under the CDC

health recommendations. The show was a little different with social distancing guidelines, but the atmosphere of fun and laughter was not taken away. Not only were Grand Champions named, but a new set of Junior Chianina Board Members were named for 2020-2021. The 2020 Livin’ on Summertime Chianina Junior National could not have taken place without this association masterminding and executing a wonderful show for the juniors. Hope to see everyone in Louisville, Ky. for the North American International Livestock Exposition!

A special Thank You to the 2019-2020 AJCA Board of Directors for their hard work and dedication this year! You helped make the Junior National a great success!

I stared at my computer screen for some time while thoughts ran through my head as to what I should write. Typically, I’m not at a loss for words and writing comes easy but something about this day is different. As summer winds down and kids begin to head back to school, I’m sure there is both excitement but fear inside all of us. Personally, I’m looking forward to Kennedy and Brooks starting school, although, coming to terms with the fact that they both are old enough has me in complete denial. Of course, as we navigate through regulations and mandates, remaining positive and forward thinking will help us all overcome this. The Ladies Auxiliary had an exceptional set of applicants this year for our annual scholarship. They included; Brooklyn Curtin, IA, Savannah Garrett, IN, Dalton Dicks, KS, and Kaylee McInvale, TX. In addition to the application, each applicant was required to undergo a virtual interview, a portion newly added for 2020. Collectively, the interview committee conducted interviews and thoroughly enjoyed talking with each applicant. In the end, the Auxiliary awarded three, $1,000 scholarships and one, $750 scholarship. Without looking through past documents, this may be the most we’ve awarded within a single year. I think this speaks volumes for the juniors involved within the AJCA. Congratulations to each scholarship recipient and best of luck as you begin your college years! The Auxiliary crowned new royalty during the NJHS in Sioux Falls. Jillian Bryant, Fulton, MO, will serve another year as the ACA National Queen. She was the 20192020 ACA National Queen and we’re honored to have her representing the Auxiliary and the ACA/AJCA for another reign. We too, had an excellent set of applicant for the Princess contest; Kyal Browne, Waxahachie, TX, Paisley Nelson, MO, and Reagan Beneker, OH. A very tough and close interview process sorted these young ladies. Kyal Browne was crowned as the 2020-2021 ACA National Princess. We too, congratulate these young ladies and look forward to their year! It wouldn’t be an Auxiliary article if our brand t-shirts weren’t mentioned. Still available and can be shipped. Please contact me if you’d like to purchase. Shirts are 1/$20 or 2/$35. The purchase of these shirts helps fund our Queen throughout the year. Dr. Pearse Lyons once said, “It’s not about making money, it’s about making a difference.” Heather, without a doubt, made a difference this summer. Her exceptional ability to plan and execute any task, especially a junior nationals, is something that she should receive endless gratitude for. It’s no doubt, without her knowledge, levelheadedness and ability to communicate openly and professionally, an event like this would have never happened. I think we all owe her, Dustin and the entire AMAA as well a special THANK YOU for ensuring our families could participate in the annual event we have all come to love. I look forward to seeing everyone in November on the green shavings. Until then, prayers and best wishes for each and every one. ~ Kelsey

Livin’ For Summertime

2020 National Junior Heifer Show, Sioux Falls, SD

T

he 2020 National Junior Heifer Show was an exercise in perseverance. After learning that the show could not go on as scheduled in Lima, Ohio, the hunt was on for a new location that could host our annual event safely and allow our families to enjoy the event they have grown accustomed to. After weeks of researching numerous options, Sioux Falls, SD became home to the 2020 NJHS! Even though location and plans changed, our families loaded up and headed north for a week of Livin’ for Summertime! Some contests were held virtually prior to the show, while others went on as normal in person. After a whirlwind of a week, we wrapped up our event with outstanding, high-quality shows! In what was the largest steer show ever at junior nationals, Carson Rieck of Iowa swept the Progress Steer Show, taking home both Grand Champion Owned & Grand Champion Bred & Owned Progress Steer honors, with Maggie Johnson of Indiana claiming the Reserve Owned Progress Steer award. Reserve Grand Champion Bred & Owned Progress Steer went to Casey Besse of Illinois. In the Prospect Steer Show, it was another sweep, this time by Parker Schwarz of Kansas. His steer walked away as Grand Champion Owned & Grand Champion Bred & Owned Prospect Steer. Beckett Winegardner, Ohio, exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Owned Prospect Steer while Kennedy Evans of Kentucky showed the Reserve Grand Champion Bred & Owned Prospect Steer. In the Bred & Owned Bull Show, Parker Schwarz again found the winner’s circle, exhibiting the Grand Champion Bred & Owned Bull, while Macey Banter of Indiana took home the Reserve honors. In the Owned Chianina Show, Sara Sullivan found her way to the top to take home the Grand Champion Female banner and Ashtin Guyer from Illinois walked away with Reserve Grand Champion honors. In the Bred & Owned Show, Claire Sennett exhibited the Grand Champion and Whitney Walker exhibited the Reserve Bred & Owned Female. In the Chiangus Show, Brooklyn Curtin exhibited the Grand Champion Owned Female while Kylee Myers took home the Reserve honors. In the Bred & Owned Show, Kennedy Evans walked away with the Champion Female honors and Reserve Female accolades went to Kaylee Rowlett. Congratulations too all the juniors on an outstanding week in Sioux Falls!

Multi-Generation Registration Discount Program

Do you have calves to register, but have neglected to get their ancestors registered? Here’s your chance to catch up on those back generations at a reduced rate. From now until Aug. 31, 2020, the ACA is offering a reduced rate on registering older generations when submitting a current calf registration. The current calf will be charged at its normal rate, but any generations back will be just $25! That’s a savings of $20/head on any and all generations after the calf, females or bulls. Take advantage of this special to catch up on those missing registrations and get your herd caught up. Be sure to call Jennifer or Cheryl at the office to take advantage of this special.

Cow-Catch Up Now Thru Aug. 31!

A registration moratorium has been offered through August 31. If you need to catch up on registering some cows that either slipped through the cracks, or you initially neglected to register, you can do so now without penalty. But hurry! This offer ends on August 31, 2020. (The penalty for registering cattle over two years of age is waived.)

Important Registration Reminders Genetic Testing Reminders Before submitting registrations to the ACA, please note the following policies regarding Genetics Testing & DNA Info: • All ACA registered bulls born after January 1, 2017 must be DNA parent verified before their progeny can be registered. • All ACA registered natural calves born after January 1, 2019 out of a cow that is fifteen years of age or older at birth of the calf must be DNA parent verified. • AI Sires & Donor dams for embryo calves must have genetic testing and DNA

46

Bulletin parentage on file before calves will be registered. • All sires (natural or AI) of all breeds must have DNA on file before calves will be registered. If you have questions regarding this policy, please call the office.

ACA Creates DNA Department

The ACA has been processing DNA for the Black Hereford Association for several years. With the technological advances available to progressive cattlemen, and the requirement for all bulls that sire calves registered in the ACA Herdbook, as well as all donor dams, to have DNA on file, it only made sense for the ACA to offer this service to ACA members. Watch for more information coming soon.

ACA All-American Program Changes

At the spring board meeting, the ACA board of directors made the following updates to the ACA All-American Program, effective with the 2020-2021 show season. • The minimum number of shows required to qualify was lowered to two shows (from the previous three). However the maximum number of point shows used to tally points will remain at five. This applies to both the open and junior programs.

Membership Requirement to Register Cattle

Effective Sept. 1, 2020, anyone registering cattle with the ACA must be an active member. There will no longer be non-member fees. If you are not an active member when you register, you will automatically be charged a membership renewal or new membership fee. If you have questions, please contact the ACA office.

Egg Extravaganza Moved to Louisville

The Egg Extravaganza event has been moved to take place with the ACA National Show events in Louisville in November. This move will allow more time for breeders and members to select embryo packages to donate and allow for more excitement to build around the fun and important event. Watch for more details in future issues of the ACJ. For more information or to consign an embryo package, please contact Larry Garrett at 765-969-0154 or Dustin Hurlbut at 605380-8052.

Bred & Owned Requirements Updated

At the July 2020 meeting, the ACA Board of Directors approved an update to the Bred & Owned rules for junior cattle effective immediately. The new rules read as follows: • Junior members may create a joint sibling junior membership (initial fee of $150 with an annual activity fee of $75). • Each sibling must maintain their own active individual junior membership. • Animals will remain in the joint sibling membership, but at the time of entry for NJHS (or NAILE If animal was not exhibited at NJHS), it will be designated which junior will be exhibiting the animal for bred & owned via entry forms submitted by each junior member. • The animal must be exhibited by the same junior for the entire show season (May-April) in order to qualify for Bred & Owned. • Animals may not be co-owned with a farm or adult member. Joint ownership is limited to siblings. • Calves born to bred females that are transferred from one sibling to the

joint sibling membership will still qualify as bred & owned to any of the siblings in the joint membership. If you have questions regarding this rule, please contact Heather Counts, Director of Shows & Activities, at 517-214-0927 or by email at heather@chicattle.org.

Join us in

Louisville !

20 years ago, a group of Chianina breeders envisioned an event that would offer elite genetic opportunities to anyone interested, with the goal of not only raising funds for the ACA, but also paying a large “winner takes all” premium to the top placing animals from these genetic packages! In 2002, the culmination of this Egg Extravaganza event took place at the ACA National Show in Louisville where the resulting calves from the elite genetic packages were shown, and the winner of the female and bull divisions took home the prize money of well over $15,000! With the vision of Larry Garrett, the idea of the Egg Extravaganza has been reborn! Dig deep, consider consigning elite genetic packages, team up with fellow breeders to form syndicates that allow you to purchase these top caliber genetics at top dollar prices, and stake your claim for the high dollar prize money in 2022!

Goal: Rules: Sale: Show:

• To raise $150,000-$200,000, with the money raised used to market and promote Chianina cattle, as well as support the junior programs of the AJCA. • Each lot will include 3 embryos of the same mating • Divisions for Chiangus, Chianina & Italian Fullblood • ALL embryos will be DNA tested for parentage; resulting calves must be registered with the ACA & parent verified • All resulting calves must be entered in the 2022 National Show • One pregnancy per lot guaranteed • Egg Extravaganza auction will be held in conjunction with 2020 ACA National Show Events in Louisville, Kentucky in November • Breeders encouraged to create syndicates to increase buying power & create excitement • Embryo packages will start at $3,000 • Egg Extravaganza show will be at the 2022 NAILE, immediately following the National Show • A 3-division show will be offered (Italian Fullblood, Chianina & Chiangus) • Half of the money raised from the sale of embryo packages will be paid back as premiums in the show. • Funds raised from the sale of embryos in each of the 3 divisions will be paid out as premiums in the respective divisions

For more information or to consign embryos, please contact Larry Garrett at 765.969.0154 or Dustin Hurlbut at 605.380.8052. Watch for more information on auction in the next month.

On the Road Again… I

54

A Swing Through West Texas by Ken Culp, III

n a “normal” year, I spend a lot of time in airports and on airplanes. Truth is, I love to fly. Little did I know that when I flew home from Fort Worth on February 2, that I would not board a plane for four months. Like most people, by the time June rolled around, I was tired of social distancing. Air fares were cheap, and I was looking for a place to go. I was scheduled to speak at a conference in Minneapolis the first week of June (the cancellation of that conference turned out to be a blessing in disguise! No one needed to be in Minneapolis in early June.) So, instead of flying to Minneapolis, I flew to Lubbock, Texas. I’ve known the Fosters for twenty years. We first met both Dave and Jody’s families at the 2000 National Junior Heifer Show, held in Louisville. (Will and Brittany are the same age; Segayle and Kelsey were born 14 days apart.) However, I’d never been to Fosters, and decided that it was time to visit. I met Segayle and Jody at the ranch. We first stopped at the show barn, which is a highly functional, older building, that makes efficient use of all available space. Well insulated and equipped with a tie rail, misters, and enough fans to combat a hurricane, it’s not fancy, but has been home to more national champions and All-Americans than most of us will ever own. (Now that I think of it, the same thing could be said for the show barn at Talmo Ranch.) As expected, the show cattle were in good shape and were ready to show. Herdsman Hoyt and Crystal McInvale, together with their daughters Kaylee and Avery, were busy rinsing and blowing the cattle. There was a lot of air moving through the barn! The working pens, alleys, handling system, and runs are impressive. Adjacent to the show barn, and connected with an alley, is a barn with a concrete floor that houses the handling system, including two chutes. It is set up to facilitate every function on a cattle ranch, plus working cattle on sale day, its complete with an in-floor flush system to handle manure and make cleaning the barn a snap. I was more than impressed. After they drug me out of that barn, we walked through the pens and runs, which flow right down to the highway. An incredibly well

thought-out system. SyAnn took time to drop by with Kaden and Korbin, which was a real treat. The three Foster sisters have always been incredibly polite and well-spoken. These are traits that are being passed on to their children. Kaden stuck his hand out, looked me square in the eye, and said “nice to meet you, sir.” I was impressed. With Hoyt behind the wheel, we drove through a pasture filled with pairs. I have to admit, it was the first time I’d ever been in a pasture with a sprinkler irrigation system. The cows were in good flesh and were nursing husky calves.

We drove back to Jody’s house and Segayle gave us a tour of their home. Jody and Shawnda live in the home that was purchased by Jody’s grandparents in 1960. Jody and Shawnda have remodeled and added on to it extensively, but have done so in such a meticulous fashion that the additions are virtually indiscernible from the original structure. The outdoor living spaces (including an outdoor kitchen and pool) are magazine quality. Shawnda was preparing for a party that evening; it’s a home built for entertaining. The inside is filled with lots of photos and memorabilia of Senee, Segayle and SyAnn. It’s a home that’s filled with love. We finished up at their D & G Cotton Gin. Jody started the tour at the very beginning, from the perspective of unloading a truckload of newly harvested raw cotton. I, of course, interrupted with a million questions, which he patiently answered. David pulled in and Jody handed me off to his brother, who runs the gin. It was my first visit to a cotton gin, and it was unlike anything that I had ever seen. I’m not the least bit mechanical, so the entire process was both fascinating, and more than a little overwhelming. But it was very interesting, nonetheless. David was patient in explaining the process and walking me through the gin. DarLee (David’s wife) was in Amarillo that day, so, unfortunately, I didn’t get to visit with her. All five of the Foster kids have aged out of the Junior Program; four of them have children of their own and Segayle is completing her first year of service on the ACA Board of Directors, following in her Dad’s footsteps, who served two terms on the board and was chairman in 2003. Fosters are currently “between generations” in the American Junior

Chianina Association and our junior program. The influence of cattle that Fosters have either bred or campaigned on a national level is hard to describe. “Kendall Marie” (57 progeny), “Cisco Gold” (38 progeny), “Nevada Nights” (32 progeny), “Sunflower” (23 progeny), “Daisy” (29 progeny) and “Excellence” (22 progeny) (to name just a few) are females have made an incredible influence on the breed, while “Aces High” (220 progeny) and “Long Shot” (71 progeny) each made a tremendous impact as sires. The Fosters returned to Louisville and exhibited the National Champion Chiangus Female in 2018. We look forward to their increased involvement and influence on our breed and association.

hile I was in the “neighborhood” I called on Charles and Kay Burk. I first met Charles and Kay at the 1980 National Show in Louisville, where I had the extremely good fortune of being stalled across the aisle from them. As I recall, they exhibited six head that year in Louisville, one of which was their famous “Hershey” heifer (purchased from Blue Sky Farms in Kearney, MO.) I must confess that I don’t remember a lot of about their cattle that year (I was showing my very first Chiangus, although the term “Chiangus” had not yet been developed …. Fullbloods and Percentages were shown.) What I do remember is that people were drawn to Charles and Kay Burk like magnets! Charles has this larger than life persona; he never met a stranger, and he treats new acquaintances just like old friends. And Kay Burk was about the classiest lady that I’d ever seen; especially in a cattle barn! With her straight, jet black hair, parted down the middle, attired in catalog-quality and adorned with an impressive array of turquoise, she looked like an Indian princess. Charles & Kay Burk were among the very first breeders in the United States whose goal was to raise multi-generation Chiangus. The CJB prefix has long been associated with high-percentage, multi-generation Chiangus cattle that exude quality. There aren’t many serious Chiangus breeders today that don’t recognized the name “CJB Flash PCA” and appreciate his impact on the breed. At any rate, I had called and visited with the Burks a couple of weeks previously, and Charles was telling me about this “old Chiangus bull” that Kay was feeding. “CJB Mr Flasheta 3T” was born on December 15, 2007 (making him nearly 13 years old)! I knew that I had to see him. CJB Mr Flasheta 3T (366764) traces three times to CJB Flash PCA and his maternal grandmother is the legendary CJB Careta 2CA cow. “Mr. Bull” (as Kay affectionately calls him) is 50.19% Chianina but is exceptionally moderate in frame size. Of his eight grandparents, seven have the PCA designation. Mr. Bull has never had his feet trimmed, and his feet are remarkable. His hoof size and shape is unbelievable and indescribable. This is a thick, meaty, moderately framed bull that would fit right in today. I don’t believe that I’ve ever seen a 12 year old Chiangus bull before; Mr. Bull’s coal black hide is slowly becoming interspersed with flecks of gray. A search of Digital Beef on the ACA website reveals that CJB Mr Flasheta 3T has no offspring recorded with the ACA. I asked

about them. It seems that the Burks sold the bull to a commercial breeder. When he passed away a couple of years ago, his widow contacted the Burks, asking if they’d like to buy the bull back. They drove over to see him and Kay wrote a check. Surprisingly, Charles and Kay have not yet collected their bull. I encouraged them to do so; finding a PCA Chiangus bull that is also a half-blood is virtually unheard of these days. In fact, he may be the only halfblood PCA bull in the world. I hope that they’ll get him collected and offer his semen for sale. This bull could still make a remarkable impact upon the breed. The Burk home is a showplace; a museum. A testament to the past and a documented history of the lives of Charles (Buck) and Kay Burk. The home was built by Kay’s grandparents. They moved into it four years after they married (they were married just before their senior years in college.) Kay modeled in college, then taught first grade for 14 years. Charles spent most of his life as an Agriculture teacher. After they had both taught for 14 years, they took 10 years off and supported themselves by breeding and showing multi-generational Chiangus cattle. They had the good fortunate of meeting J.T. Pass. J.T. made two important acquisitions from CJB. First, he purchased

their entire show string, which consisted of six head. Later, he came to the ranch to see the cowherd. He was so impressed with the CJB Chiangus herd that he made an offer on the entire herd. Buck said no. J.T. countered with a second offer. Buck still shook his head. J.T. came back a third time and this time, instead of shaking his head “no”, Buck stuck out his hand and shook on it. CJB Flash PCA went with the herd to J.T. Pass’s. J.T., in turn, featured Flash in his next production sale. Wayne and Jill Miller had their eye on him and wouldn’t be denied. Flash went home to Talmo, where he lived for the rest of his days. Fortunately, while the Chiangus herd went home with J.T., Buck and Kay kept their herd of purebred Angus cows, which they used to make more Chiangus. After their 10 year hiatus from teaching (having retired their debt at the bank), Buck returned to the classroom, while Kay began managing a high end specialty store and eventually became the head buyer. (Kay confided that she sold $1,200 blazers to women and dressed Miss Texas.) She continued to model women’s clothing for a western store. Charles and Kay Burk will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary on September 5. Kay told me “I’ve been married so long that I don’t remember what it was like to be single.” To which Buck responded (with his tongue firmly in his cheek and a twinkle in his eye) “Kay might not remember what it was like to be single, but I sure do!” To which Kay replied “Yes, and sometimes he acts like it, too!” I enjoyed a wonderful visit with the Burks. I can’t wait for my next visit.

ACA Spring Board Meeting April 3-4, 2020 • Via Zoom The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm CST on Friday, April 3. Staff Reports: Jennifer informed the group that everything is running smoothly in the ACA office. They are continuing to work daily and practicing safe social distancing within the headquarters building. Cheryl provided some numbers for registrations, transfers and membership for the 2020 year-to date. The Board of Directors broke into committee meetings at 1:23 pm. Saturday, April 4 Call to Order at 9 am. Present: Culp, Tracy, Higgins, Sexton, Foster, Dunklau, Sheets, Garrett, Stoppel, Winegardner, Evans, and staff members Hurlbut and Counts. Absent: Gaddis Officer’s Reports Secretary’s Reports The December 19, 2019, January 28, 2020, and February 10, 2020 minutes were reviewed. Sexton moved, Garrett seconded to accept the minutes as presented. Motion carries. Treasurer’s Reports The Treasurer’s report was presented and reviewed. Discussion was entertained. Sheets moved, Foster seconded to accept the Treasurer’s report. Motion carries. Staff Reports: Counts recapped Louisville, Denver and Ft. Worth shows. The Herd Reference Edition of the ACJ is coming together nicely and should reach mailboxes the first part of May.

The Youth Beef Industry Council conference in Denver was canceled for 2020, so the AJCA board met via Zoom last week and discussed the NJHS and award ideas for that event. The AJCA board application has been updated and is now posted on the website. Counts attended the Oklahoma Youth Expo, where 85 head of Chi cattle were exhibited and the champion Chi female was Supreme Champion. The 2020 NJHS plans remain as-is and will be evaluated on a bi-weekly basis. Hurlbut reported of his travels to the Fort Worth Stock Show, Ward Lane’s, the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic and Justin Tracy’s. He is working on several projects including the Egg Extravaganza, a new marketing and promotional video and the sire test and gave a updates on each. Liaison Updates Chiangus Classic Chairman Ty Sexton joined the meeting and gave updates on the Chiangus Classic. If the NJHS is not able to be held this summer, the Chiangus Classic will move away from NJHS this year. Much discussion followed with Sexton answering questions from the board of directors. Currently, nominations are due May 1 but that is subject to change. Auxiliary The Ladies Auxiliary has elected new officers. A secondary education scholarship is in the works and the current scholarship application has been revised. The auxiliary is very active and proactive currently. AJCA The AJCA Board of Directors application has been revised. Planning is going well for the 2020 NJHS and some changes will be made to simplify the check in process including contest score cards being included in the exhibitor packets.

Committee Reports: Performance & Genetic Abnormality An in-house DNA department was discussed. Bundle packages would be available for genetic testing.
