Amerejuve to Add New Technology

New Treatment Corrects Skin Imperfections

The best treatments work with the body, using its natural processes to revitalize and renew – they just give a little encouragement from the outside. Amerejuve is pleased to announce it will soon offer eMatrix, a device that works on the same principal: stimulating the body’s natural processes to make you look good and feel good. eMatrix from Syneron and Candela heats deep layers of the skin to create a smoother, more rejuvenated appearance. This process treats mild to moderate wrinkles, superficial skin discoloration, and textural irregularities such as acne scarring.

Amerejuve will soon offer eMatrix, a device from Syneron Candela that creates smoother, more youthful skin, such as in this treatment for acne scarring.

eMatrix applies energy to specific, small areas in the skin in the shape of a matrix. As the untreated skin surrounding these areas responds and heals, it produces new collagen and new skin cells, creating a smoother, more elastic and more youth-

ful appearance. This treatment takes about 10-20 minutes and has minimal downtime. eMatrix will be offered at Amerejuve soon. Call (713) 960-6262 for a free consultation. ■

Project Pink 2013 Fights Cancer in Style

Amerejuve and other sponsors were pleased to help make Project Pink 2013 a success.

Project Pink 2013 celebrated breast cancer survivors in style and encouraged women to focus on early detection of the disease. “Breast cancer has been revolutionized,” said Dr. Craig Theissen, a radiologist at North Cypress Medical Center. “With early detection, you will survive. … Breast cancer is not a death sentence.” At the fundraiser, held October 19 by the North Cypress Medical Center with sponsors such as Amerejuve MedSpa and Cosmetic Surgery, survivors and doctors spoke with the same goal in mind – to encourage early detection and prompt treatment. Early detection is possible when women perform monthly self-exams, have yearly mammograms starting in their forties and fifties, and research their family history to see if they or their loved ones might be at greater risk of developing the cancer. Many of the women in attendance were themselves survivors, and were honored with crowns and flowers at the event. Several survivors shared personal stories of their journeys with breast cancer.

It was also a great team-building experience to share with a friend.” Both intend to run again next year “for the camaraderie, the exertion, the pain, and the challenge to push beyond the total awesomeness what we accomplished this year,” Panthagani said. “Finished on our feet!” ■

Eye Opener Blepharoplasty Offers Dramatic, Refreshing Change to Overall Look Our eyes have a major impact on our appearance – they play a huge part in your expressions, and even whether other people recognize you. Unfortunately, eyes are not immune to aging. Droopy eyes with baggy skin around them make the whole face look tired and aged, while bright, open eyes look younger, fresher and more alert. Blepharoplasty is the technical name for a surgical eyelid lift, and this surgery can have a major impact on the appearance of the face, particularly the upper portion. Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper lid, the lower lid, or both, depending on the needs and goals of the patient, board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ravi Somayazula said. The surgery focuses on removing or lifting excess, droopy skin, muscle or fat to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes. “Every patient is a little bit different,” Somayazula said. An important part of any cosmetic surgery is discovering what the patient wants and then determining the best strategy. “Some people know exactly what they want, they cut out all the nitty gritty and go straight to it,” Somayazula said. “Other people, they say ‘I just don’t like the way my face looks, I’ve been told I look tired.’” Somayazula said he often asks patients to articulate as specifically as possible what they want to correct. “If there’s one thing about your face that bothers you the most. If they can vocalize that issue, then they’re a good candidate,” he said. For some, if their

concern is really about the lower portion of their face, such as the neck or cheek area, a facelift is a better option. Patients can choose to have both a facelift and a blepharoplasty, though Somayazula noted his recommendation would be to combine the surgeries only if it is a facelift and upper blepharoplasty. Otherwise, he recommends performing two surgeries to reduce the length of time spent conAfter Before tinuously in surgery, Blepharoplasties can target droopy upper eyelids and which is safer for the puffy lower lids to have a dramatic effect on the overall patient. look of the face. Surgery Suite Ask the Surgeon

Am I a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty targets loose, droopy tissue around the eyes that can create a tired appearance or even reduce field of vision.

As with any cosmetic surgery, good overall health is important for being a good candidate for a blepharoplasty, also called an eyelid lift. Because the surgery involves the eyes, there are also factors, such as high blood pressure and certain eye conditions, that increase the risk of complications for the surgery and preclude a patient from being an ideal candidate. Dr. Ravi Board certified plastic Somayazula surgeon Dr. Ravi Somayazula said a key step is to make sure the surgery is the right one for the results that you want. Many people begin to feel unhappy with their reflection in the mirror as they age,

but they may only have a general complaint that they look “old” or “tired.” Narrowing down to the specific areas that create that effect, such as loose or droopy skin around the eyes, cheeks, chin, or neck, is an important part of the initial consultation. “All those things can be corrected, but they need to be teased out,” Somayazula said. For patients who are most concerned with their eyes and the upper portion of the face, a blepharoplasty is often the right choice. For others patients, other procedures may create a more significant change and better address their goals. Acne Problems Causes of Adult Acne Pinpointing the cause of acne can help find the best way to treat and prevent it.

Hormone Imbalance

This is particularly true for women. Fluctuating hormones from menstruation, menopause, and starting or stopping birth control can lead to acne.

Stress

Not Just For Teens: Acne Can Arise at Any Age Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, and it’s on the rise among adults, particularly women. While the condition is often associated with teenagers, adults can have acne in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond, meaning Acne forms when a pore or follicle becomes many adults are facing clogged. wrinkles and acne at the heads, whiteheads, papules, cysts, same time. and nodules. Stress encourages the body to produce androgens, which in turn cause skin to produce more oil that can clog pores and cause acne.

Family History

Adults with a family history of acne are more prone to having acne.

Hair and Skin Care Products

Some hair and skin care products can clog or aggravate skin that is prone to acne. Adults who are acne-prone should ensure all products have one of the following phrases on their labeling: non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic, oil-free, or won’t clog pores.

Medication

Acne can be a side effect of some medications. If this is the cause, your physician may be able to switch to a different medication. If not, other steps will need to be taken to control the acne.

Underlying Medical Cause

Some medical conditions can cause acne. For this type of acne, it should clear up once the underlying cause has been found and treated. Source: American Academy of Dermatology

Amerejuve Targets Acne, Scarring with Array of Services Adult acne is frustrating and embarrassing, but Amerejuve can help. After a thorough consultation, Amerejuve experts can recommend a number of lifestyle changes and treatment options to help control acne and the scars it leaves behind. Maya Malik, a medical esthetician at Amerejuve, finds people with acne often make common mistakes. “They’re using the wrong product that has oil, and also they’re not cleaning properly. They’re using over-the counter stuff that doesn’t make any difference,” she said. Diet can also contribute to acne, especially dairy products. For active acne, Amerejuve offers

Results vary between patients, but most are happy with their results, Somayazula said. By eating a healthy diet, protecting skin from the sun, and avoiding smoking, most patients will see the results last for five to ten years. Ask Roxy!

PROJECT PINK, from Page 1 Jennifer Linton-Ellis, 44, first discovered a lump during a self-exam a little over a year ago. “I thought it was the end of the world,” she said, but, because it was caught early, her treatments have been successful. “It’s scary, yes. But as long as you detect it early, we can take care of it.” Survivor Gina Scott said those with a family history of breast cancer should be tested for the BRCA gene, which has been strongly linked to breast cancer. She tested positive for the gene, and she encouraged other members of her family to become tested. Several tested positive, including both her sisters and her daughter, and they have been able to take steps for early detection and prevention. “Having breast cancer was not a tragedy, as I was able to save my sisters’ lives and possibly my daughter’s,” she said. In addition to information and inspiring stories, Project

You Too Can Be Anti-Cellulite

What causes cellulite? Cellulite is the lumpy, dimpled appearance skin can develop after puberty (usually on the legs and derriere), and it happens when fat cells protrude through the connective tissue under the skin. Sorry ladies, it is way more common for us than for the guys because our connective tissue doesn’t hold fat in as well. There are a lot of ideas out there about Roxy what makes you more likely to have cellulite, Baldwin including hormone changes, activity level, diet, genetics, and even the clothing you wear (No tight undergarments around you tush)! What can I do to get rid of cellulite? Unfortunately, if you’re prone to cellulite, diet and exercise aren’t going to get it all, though losing weight can help decrease the appearance of cellulite. Remember, even people who are underweight can have cellulite. If you’re at a healthy weight and still have cellulite (not fair, right?), you’re going to need to take direct action. Many of our body contouring services help reduce the appearance of cellulite. For example, VelaShape uses bi-polar radio frequency with vacuum and mechanical massage to reduce the appearance of cellulite, and Vaser Shape combines ultrasonic therapy and massage to reduce its appearance. scarring. This scarring can be minimized, however, by treating acne when it first begins to appear, and Amerejuve also offers a number of services that address the scarring acne can leave behind. Acne is graded on a scale from 1 to 4, with 1 being mild and 4 being severe. Mild acne can usually be treated with topical products that do not require a prescription. More severe acne, particularly if it also presents with cysts or nodules, may require more aggressive treatment in order to clear the acne and prevent scarring, such as laser and light therapies or chemical peels. Prescription medications may also be needed in some cases. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends several simple steps to control acne, including gently washing the face twice a day with lukewarm water, shampooing hair regularly, avoiding sun exposure, and avoiding touching the face or other areas prone to acne whenever possible. If these steps aren’t enough, Amerejuve offers a number of services to help clear skin and heal and reduce the appearance of scarring from acne. Call (713) 960-6262 for more information. ■
