The first Amerejuve Insider hit the stands in August 2013. Over the course of the year, we’ve covered growth and changes in the medspa industry and in Amerejuve itself. The Bridal Extravaganza Show is all about inspiration. Many brides and their loved ones come looking for ideas to create their perfect day, from cakes and DJs to florists, photographers, and special little details like photo booths and favors. Everything is about customization and personalization, and brides who stopped by the Amerejuve Booth realized they can refine themselves as well. At the July 2014 show, the Amerejuve booth offered prizes to use toward laser hair removal, body contouring, and facials, plus Botox on site with experi-
enced nurse Pam Dunn behind a privacy screen. Hundreds of brides stopped by the booth to be inspired to look and feel their best on their wedding day. Erin B. is getting married in April 2015, and she said she’s excited to use her Amerejuve prize for body contouring. She visited the show with her best bridesmaid, Paige S., to locate ideas for her whimsical wedding. “I’m doing citrus colors,” she said. Is Your Child at Risk for Summer Weight Gain?
Many adults worry about gaining weight on vacation, but parents may not realize the same concern should apply to their kids. A recent report from the Center for Disease Control says certain young people are particularly prone to gaining weight during time off from school. The study found that Hispanic and African-American minors are the most likely to gain weight during vacation, along with children of any ethnicity who are already overweight. The CDC report analyzed data from a nationwide sample in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, and found that Hispanic, African-American, and already overweight children and teens had the most negative effects to their weight over the summer months. Amerefit Nutritionist and Wellness Coach Saba Umar said she sees two main factors that cause summer weight gain among teens: a drop in activity levels and a change in eating habits. “Kids sleep longer, stay up late, don’t walk to or inside the school, don’t have gym class anymore or actively participate in any activities. Being at home watching tv or playing video games does not burn even half the amount of calories they burn at school,” she said, and those leftover calories are converted into stored fat. Eating habits can also be negatively affected during summer break. “Waking up late and skipping breakfast, snacking at home due to boredom, and consuming more junk food only

Bride Waliya L. plans to get married in Austin, but came to the Houston show to get ideas. “I knew it was going to be a big extravaganza, literally,” she said, and she planned a weekend trip specifically to visit the show. “We got some really good ideas.” Her maid of honor, Tanvir P., said their visit was a success. “My right brain’s real excited right now,” she said. And despite being a self-identified “non-wedding person,” Tanvir added with a laugh, “Maybe I’ll have a garden wedding.” Kelsie S. visited the show with her mother and is also planning an April wedding. Her word to describe her dream wedding is “Beautiful,” and she was getting ideas for decorations for the wedding. Since the show, she’s dreaming of adding a floral chandelier to her decorations. Major Improvements with a Mini Tuck Procedure Targets Stubborn Fat and Flab on the Lower Abdomen For men and women with persistent, exercise-resistant fat or loose skin on the lower abdomen, a mini tummy tuck may be just what the doctor ordered. A mini tummy tuck is also known as a partial abdominoplasty, and it is less complicated and invasive than a full tummy tuck. This procedure is a great option to make a small correction to the lower abdominal area that appears flabby or disproportionate compared to the rest of the body. In a mini tummy tuck, the navel position is unchanged, and usually the incisions are smaller than in a full tummy tuck. Like a full tummy tuck, it can also be paired with liposuction to create the desired results and contour to the body. In a mini tummy tuck, the loose, underlying muscle is tightened. Then, any excess skin or fat are removed to create a firm, smooth appearance. A good candidate for a mini tummy tuck is in good health, relatively fit, and is not planning any future pregnancies. Pregnancy after a tummy tuck procedure is likely to re-stretch the tightened area, undoing the results of the surgery. Cosmetic Tourism Surgery abroad can save up-front spending, but at what cost?
An unknown number of Americans travel abroad for cosmetic surgeries each year, seeking lower cost alternatives for their procedures. American surgeons warn that the lower cost may be outweighed by the possibility for complications caused by inexperienced surgeons, lax regulations, and lack of follow-up care. It’s important to remember that any surgery carries certain inherent risks to the body, such as scarring, asymmetry, nerve weakness, and other complications. Many traveling patients may assume that the cost of surgery abroad is low because of the low cost of living in other countries but the quality of care is the same. However, that may not always be the case, and the reduction in price may come from inferior materials or facilities, lack of certification, or lack of experience. “Prospective patients are not aware that the licensing conditions for plastic surgery abroad differ vastly from those in the United States,” Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj of New York told Epoch Times. “There is a consequent danger that customers will focus on the promised outcome and the apparent cost savings, rather than analyzing the medical facilities and surgical competence of the team conducting the procedure.” Another key factor for a successful, safe cosmetic procedure is follow-up care. Most surgeons follow up with patients for weeks and months following the surgery to determine whether the patient needs any slight adjustments and is healing properly. If the surgeon is in another country, however, these follow-up visits require additional travel, must be conducted over the phone, or don’t occur at all, and minor problems can quickly become worse.
