Because this booklet is printed before final semester grades are submitted, the list of graduates, honors and honor societies may not be accurate. In addition, some students may not be listed because they completed degree requirements later than anticipated and missed the printing deadline. All degrees and declaration of related honors will be confirmed and validated via official transcript, which will include all grades for courses completed through the past semester. In all cases, the actual awarding of a degree by the university is subject to verification by the Registrar. Therefore, these exercises are to be considered ceremonial.

These Alvernia Red stoles, worn by undergraduates and five-year master program students, recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of the graduate. The attached pins represent the clubs and services students participated in during their time with the university. The stoles also provide an opportunity for graduates to honor those who have helped them achieve their milestones by writing names on the inside of stole. During this time of reflection and new beginnings, student can keep the stole or present this to a family member or friend that has supported their scholarly pursuit.

Honorary Degree of Humane Letters
For over 25 years, Dr. Khalid N. Mumin has served in various capacities as a teacher, dean of students, principal and central administrator. Most recently, Dr. Mumin served as the Superintendent of Schools at Lower Merion School District. Prior to Lower Merion, Dr. Mumin was the Superintendent of Reading School District for seven years.
Beginning as a Secondary English teacher in Scotland, Pennsylvania in 1997, Dr. Mumin rose through the leadership ranks of the education system in Pennsylvania. Dr. Mumin is committed to promoting and sustaining student achievement, equity and access to educational programming for all students, as well as creating plans that are fiscally responsible.
He has been recognized nationally as a “School Board Savvy Superintendent,” and is the author of the book entitled Problem Child: Leading Students Living in Poverty Towards Infinite Possibilities of Success.
Dr. Mumin earned a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Education in Teaching & Curriculum from Pennsylvania State University, a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary English Education from Shippensburg University, and an Associate of Arts in English from Northeastern Christian Junior College.
John R. Loyack joined the Alvernia community as its seventh president in July 2019, bringing with him a powerful mix of business acumen and higher education leadership.
During his four years as President, Loyack has led a successful effort to restructure the institution, develop and implement a five-year, studentcentric, strategic plan, attract the university’s three largest incoming student classes, and secure the highest government grants and individual philanthropic gifts in Alvernia’s history.
President Loyack’s vision for the university’s CollegeTowne initiative has led the way in expanding the university in center-city Reading and downtown Pottsville. The multi-faceted initiative and partnership seeking strategy has created new academic programs in high-demand fields, expanded student living space, development of new community programming, added experiential learning opportunities for students, and has sparked economic redevelopment and new business creation in the city.
Before arriving at Alvernia, President Loyack served as executive vice president for business and administration at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre. At King’s College, he was known for his skills in team building, financial management, community engagement and an intense focus on student success.
Prior to his tenure at King’s, he spent decades as a corporate executive in the energy, transportation and manufacturing sectors, leading many businesses, including serving as president and chief executive officer of Optim Energy/EnergyCo in Irving, Texas, President and CEO of CPG International in Scranton, Pennsylvania and senior vice president and chief financial officer of PNM Resources in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In addition to earning an MBA from Lehigh University and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from King’s College, the Pennsylvania native is a certified public accountant with a long history of building relationships in the community.
