Welcome. Today’s activities represent the culmination of years of study and work by these graduating students who have studied at our Reading, Pottsville, and Philadelphia community based locations. We commend all of them, as well as their families and friends, for the many sacrifices made in the process of achieving this milestone. Please silence your mobile phone and other electronic devices during the program. Also, please do not approach the stage to take photos. Photos will be available on the Alvernia website after the ceremony.

Academic Hoods

The color of the velvet trim on each graduate’s academic hood represents the academic degree earned, while the satin lining of the hood represents Alvernia’s school colors of maroon and gold.

Master’s, Bachelor’s and Associate degree candidates don academic hoods during the Baccalaureate Mass and Hooding Ceremony, prior to Commencement. Doctor of Philosophy graduates don academic hoods during the commencement ceremony, bestowed by Dissertation Committee Chairs.

Affinity Stoles

These Alvernia Red stoles, worn by undergraduates and five-year master’s program students, recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of the graduate. The attached pins represent the clubs and services students participated in during their time with the university. The stoles also provide an opportunity for graduates to honor those who have helped them achieve their milestones by writing names on the inside of the stole. During this time of reflection and new beginnings, students can keep the stole or present this to a family member or friend that has supported their scholarly pursuit.

Honorary Degree of Humane Letters

An experienced senior executive and a natural at connecting people and organizations while building beneficial strategies, George S. Rice, Jr. is recognized as a global authority on generating insights, actions and planning capabilities for companies, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and government agencies.

His expertise includes public policy, community outreach, public and media relations, legislative advocacy, economic development, and international relations. Rice has planned, managed and directed local, state, regional, national and international public policy and public service efforts; designed and implemented organizational development strategies; researched and authored/ co-authored publications and articles; and has developed and conducted workshops, webinars, presentations and lectures including television, radio and podcast appearances.

Since moving on from a career in federal law enforcement, more than two-thirds of Rice’s career has involved work in a range of policy and public service arenas, including advocacy groups, foundations, professional and trade associations, and as a consultant. He has served on boards and advisory groups for non-governmental organizations and private enterprises, and as a university trustee.

Rice is also a former feature writer for the sincediscontinued digital magazine horizonmag.com and has authored two works of fiction that take the reader into the worlds of espionage and intrigue – one of which is under development as a stage production with the Plowshares Theatre Company in Detroit, Michigan.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Alvernia University and a CPM in Public Management from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
