From the Publisher... Top Ten Things I Am Thankful For… As I pondered what I would write about, I just couldn’t come up with a lot of serious stuff. Most of the time, I talk about what has happened to me as it relates to whatever is in the magazine. I do know a lot of veterans, and I am genuinely thankful for every one of them. So, while wondering what I should do, I kept thinking of all the really simple things I am thankful for. 10. I am thankful to live in the great state of Texas. I didn’t get here until I was 25 years old, but I have no plans to leave in my lifetime. I plan to go to heaven one day, but that’s another story. 9. I am thankful that I am married. I hate to think what the dating scene is like now and don’t want to know. 8. I am thankful that as this issue hits the stands, I will be in Montana, enjoying the hot tub outside my back door and relaxing. Mike, of course, will be fishing. Is that the spa calling my name? 7. I am thankful for my pool. If you have ever really wanted a pool, splurge! If you are like me, getting a nice above-ground pool is well worth the money. Trust me on this one! And you will have a nice tan at the end of the summer. 6. I am thankful for my grandkids and great-grandkids. Grands are just that – grand. The great makes them that much more special. I hope to see my newest great-grand in the next few weeks. She is beautiful! 5. I am thankful that I don’t lie on social media and say everything is always wonderful. Nobody has a perfect life. Everybody has their faults. Quit believing it and start believing in yourself instead! 4. I am thankful for all my friends who go out of their way to do kind things. For example, someone told me they thought they saw my daughter Jaclyn’s photo on a billboard for Texas DPS, where she is a state trooper. There were so many of you willing to try to help me find it and take a pic. Unfortunately, it turned out to be someone other than Jaclyn but that did not stop my wonderful friends from moving mountains to help me. Thank you to Pam Rogers, who solved the mystery! 3. Dogs. Period. 2. My children, Michael and Jaclyn. They have made my life incredibly joyful, soulfully sad, and often irate, whether at you or someone who hurt you. You are what life is about. And for the number one thing… 1. My wonderful husband, who absolutely drives me crazy at times but is the best husband ever. I think I will keep him. Even if Facebook believes he is bad and constantly kicks him off. I will still keep him.

A FAMILY TRADITION

It is not a coincidence that all three Allen siblings joined the military. Daniel Allen, Brenna Gooding, and Patrick Allen all enlisted, following their family's generational footsteps. "My father's dad was in the Army, and on our mother's side, our grandfather and his five brothers were all members of the armed forces. Three were in the Army, two were in the Navy, and our grandfather was in the Air Force. Our oldest female cousin was also in the Navy, and our mom was a 'military brat,'" Brenna says. "Also, all three of us looked up to my grandfather. He was one of the most influential people in our lives, and it made sense for military life to be important to us."

Though each sibling felt tied to the family tradition, they also had their reasons for enlisting. "Daniel went to college for two years and wanted to experience more than just staying in Texarkana. Patrick and I joined while we were still in high school," Brenna says. "All three of us wanted to travel, and we liked the structure and stability of the military. We also have similar morals and viewpoints on life." 012

All three siblings joined the Air Force, even though they could have enlisted in any branch. "Honestly, the Air Force is the best! If anyone asks me about the military, I always recommend the Air Force as a top choice," Brenna says. "Yes, our grandfather was a big factor in our decision, but the opportunities were literally 'the sky is the limit' in every way. All branches take a certain character to join and serve a unique purpose. My siblings and I are just a little partial to the Air Force." Today, Brenna, Daniel, and Patrick have left the military, but they still use the skills and trades they learned from serving in their civilian occupations. Daniel worked with ground radio in the Air Force, which involved electronics, machinery, and troubleshooting. Now, he works as a machinist for Ledwell. Patrick is a firefighter for Texarkana, Arkansas, and Brenna, who served as a flight medic, is now a respiratory therapist with Little River Memorial Hospital. "All three of us still have a deep passion for service and learning," Brenna says.

Brenna Gooding

United States Air Force call at the drop of a hat, and they can do the same with me. Time or distance doesn't matter to us." In addition, Brenna says that her time in the service amplified her love for her country. "I still get teary-eyed when I hear 'Taps' played. It gets in your blood and never truly fades," Brenna says. “Once an Airman, always an Airman.” Brenna spent ten and a half years in the United States Air Force, and in that time, she had many experiences that made her proud; however, one moment stood out. "Being asked to serve on medical detail when former President Obama flew into Maxwell AFB, AL, for the memorial of "Bloody Sunday" in Selma, Alabama, was truly an honor," Brenna says. "My experiences taught me always to have integrity, service comes before self, and strive for excellence in all you do. As long as you have faith, God will see you through whatever comes your way." Brenna Gooding joined the United States Air Force in 2005 when she was 18 years old. Not only was she following the family tradition, but she knew she wanted to serve her country as a flight medic. Her mother, a "military brat," gave her an accurate picture of military life. "I expected the training to be physically and mentally taxing, and I expected my military brothers and sisters to become an extended family, all of which was true," Brenna says. Even though she knew what to expect, Brenna said her time in the Air Force exceeded those expectations. "It was more than I could ever imagine. I loved caring for my patients, having a sense of purpose, and fulfilling my missions," Brenna says. "Also, I made lifelong friends I can A LT M a g a z i n e | N o v e m b e r 2 0 2 3

Brenna says that her time in the service improved some of her daily habits. "I intentionally try harder to pay attention to detail," Brenna says. "My career in the military and, now, in the medical field requires it." After serving, Brenna says that the Bible verse John 15:13 is forever changed. "The verse says, 'Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends,'" Brenna says. "With Veteran's Day coming up, it's always nice to be acknowledged, but we didn't serve for that. We served for our loved ones, our brothers, our sisters, our husbands, our wives, and our children. We served to preserve the rights and freedoms of our future generations. Just understand we sacrificed so others don't have to."

013

Daniel Allen

United States Air Force learned how to be a good manager of people and how to respond to the ways that people take my leadership when I am placed in that role," Daniel says. "I was already a fast learner, but based on how many people you learn from in the military, you have to be able to pull vast amounts of information from someone who may not be very adept at teaching." For three of his nine years in the Air Force, Daniel worked at the Air Force Research Lab, and he is very proud of his contributions to major projects. "We were developing non-lethal weapons to use during service. My name is listed on the development documents from what is known as the Active Denial System," Daniel says. "If you really want to know what that is, you can look it up on YouTube. Most of the information about it is declassified now. But for the sake of this article, it is a directed energy weapon that uses microwaves to heat the surface temperature of targets."

Daniel Allen was 20 years old when he joined the United States Air Force. Though he had initially enrolled in college, he was not satisfied. "College wasn't very stimulating, and I felt I could do more if I joined the military," Daniel says. "I chose the Air Force because my grandfather was a retired Air Force Master Sergeant. I greatly respected him for that, among other things." Most of the ideas and expectations Daniel had about the military came from movies and stories from his grandfather. "The actual experience ended up being a cross between the two," Daniel says. "The movies dramatize everything to an extreme degree, but the stories from my grandfather always made it seem more relaxed than it turned out to be." Before the Air Force, Daniel says he was a very shy person who had difficulty speaking publicly, but his time in the service changed that. "The military made me the polar opposite of what I once was. I also 014

While serving, Daniel says that the word "exhausted" took on a whole new meaning. Though people use the word flippantly, Daniel experienced profound exhaustion from being pushed to the limit. "You aren't allowed to quit. You have to keep pushing. It makes you question just how far a human body can go," Daniel says. "During an exercise in Germany, my squad and I were in a simulated scenario where the other teams were killed, so we had to cover our camp for 104 hours straight: no sleep, barely any food, and just enough water to stay awake. You reach a point where you stop being sleepy, kind of hallucinate, and think that you can do anything. It's very enlightening but also scary. That is really being 'exhausted.'" Daniel spent nine years on active duty, and one of the biggest lessons he learned came from broadening his horizons to different cultures and lifestyles. "The Air Force showed me how different cultures experience the world," Daniel says. "When people say that it's a very small world, they haven't really experienced much of it." Patrick Allen

United States Air Force many of the things that stick with me are the insults I received from drill instructors, all unfit for publication!" Looking back on his time in the Air Force, Patrick says that he is proud that he served. "I found a new level of respect for this country and what it takes to uphold this way of life," Patrick says. As Veteran's Day approaches, Patrick says that he is a bit uncomfortable receiving praise from strangers for serving. "I know that there are many different viewpoints on this topic, but I would prefer that civilians take it upon themselves to learn more about the history of this country and the U.S. military," Patrick says. "I hope this would help others better comprehend and appreciate the absolute miracle that America's founding and ideals have brought humanity as a whole."

Patrick Allen was only 18 years old when he enlisted in the Air Force. "My mother, prompted by my unruly behavior as a teenager, told me, 'I hope you get a football scholarship or go in the military because your behavior will not be rewarded by me paying for you to act a fool in college,'" Patrick says. However, Patrick was not the first in his family to join the military. He had an older brother and sister in the Air Force, so he knew what military life would be like. "In the six years I spent in the military, I learned that poor behavior and a bad attitude was counterproductive to personal growth and success," Patrick says. "The utility of selfdiscipline was definitely my biggest takeaway." Patrick says many words and phrases took on new meaning in the military. "It really has a language of its own," Patrick says. Pete Penny

Marine Corps and Army National Guard

Pete Penny decided to join the military to follow his family’s legacy. “My maternal grandpa was a Marine, and my paternal grandpa was in the Army,” Pete says. Pete was 25 years old when he joined the Marine Corps. “At the time, I figured I would see the world and meet new friends, and I was extremely proud of earning the title of ‘Marine,’” Pete says. “Deployment to Iraq was definitely an eye-opener for me. Also, the word 'field day' will never be the same. A field day in the Marines is far from it!”

018

Then, at 36 years old, Pete joined the National Guard. “I spent 14 years between the Marines and National Guard,” Pete says, “In that time, I learned to eat, sleep, and drink water every chance you get. Also, teamwork gets things done quicker.” For Pete, the best way to celebrate veterans is to say “thank you.” “Also, respect the American flag,” Pete says. “There have been too many coffins draped with one.”

Michael Rayburn United States Navy

After he graduated high school, Michael lacked a clear direction for his career, but he knew he did not want to go to college. “There were many reasons why I decided to enlist. I had many family members who had served in the military,” Michael says. “I also wanted to travel, and I knew there were great benefits such as the GI Bill, VA loans, and medical and dental care.” Even though he initially did not know what to expect, Michael says that the Navy offered his family some wonderful experiences and opportunities throughout his 20-year career. “I was able to visit 26 countries, and I even lived in England for three years,” Michael says. “Also, even though I wasn’t ready for college when I was 18, I got a Bachelor’s Degree in history and a Master’s Degree in business.” While serving, Michael was trained to be a 022

cryptologist but gained many other skills and on-the-job experience. “I have been a safety officer, HAZMAT and respiratory training officer, a financial counselor, and a training officer. I’ve also been a member of several shipboard fire teams and a member of the crash and smash team doing helicopter operations,” Michael says. “I’ve also been a coxswain who drives small boats and a master helmsman who steers ships in and out of ports and through narrow straits like the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal. I’ve held these positions in addition to performing countless other duties.” In his 20-year military career, Michael learned how to build a team and delegate responsibility, skills that served him well in his later civilian career. “I had to realize that I couldn’t solve every problem on my own,” Michael says. “This has helped me tremendously as later on, we opened a vending A LT M a g a z i n e | N o v e m b e r 2 0 2 3

machine company in Texarkana, and then we opened Oxi Fresh Carpet Cleaning in Texarkana, TX, and Sherman, TX. Then, we also acquired both Oxi Fresh of Shreveport and Bossier.” Michael’s experiences in the service also taught him the value of caring for others. “It’s important to try to offer guidance, insight, or help. I really learned the importance of serving others,” Michael says. “This was one of the reasons I ran and was later elected as a Justice of the Peace in Miller County, where I currently serve.” Michael says he was proud to serve his country and represent the United States in the 26 countries he visited. However, he especially appreciates his experiences in his last six years as the Lead Financial Counselor at the largest Navy command in the world, the National Security Agency at Fort Meade. “I had approximately 30 financial counselors that served under me. It was very rewarding helping young sailors understand their finances and the dangers of debt so that as they grew in their personal lives, they weren’t creating burdens that would impact their work life and their families. It was also a great feeling helping those that may have made the wrong financial choices when they were younger see that there was a way to gaining financial freedom and becoming debt free,” Michael says. “I still reach out to some sailors five years later to be that accountability partner and make sure they are still achieving their financial goals.”

like Iraq, Afghanistan, across Europe, and Asia, or any of the other countless places service members have served.” For several years, Michael volunteered with Honor Flights. This nonprofit organization started in Columbus, Ohio, and he encourages others to look into the organization as a way to serve and honor veterans. The mission of Honor Flights is to fly veterans, primarily from WWII and Vietnam, to Washington, D.C., to see the memorials built for them. “The flights are free to the vets and offered all across the country. Every vet also has a sponsor that goes along with them on their trip,” Michael says. “This is a great way to meet veterans who served worldwide, see some incredible landmarks, and hear their stories. Many of our veterans have a lot of stories to share if we are willing just to listen.”

As Veteran’s Day approaches, Michael thinks that the best way civilians can show appreciation is to learn more about the military’s accomplishments and share that information with the younger generations. “Don’t forget those at Arlington or any other National Cemetery,” Michael says. “Don’t forget those that fought in places A LT M a g a z i n e | N o v e m b e r 2 0 2 3

MAKE YOUR FILES FINDABLE WHEN YOU LEAVE THEM TO YOUR HEIRS ESTATE & GIVING

Living life and facing death can be liberating – and it doesn’t have to be hard.

Depending on the source, about half of Americans know they should have a will but don’t. And a National Library of Medicine study found that in 2017 only a third of us had completed end-of-life forms that outline our wishes for comfort and care during that final transition. Not surprising, maybe, since the process can be confusing and perhaps distressing when considering our own mortality. What may be surprising is the fact that the unpredictable pandemic may have shifted Americans’ attitudes toward codifying our wishes in a very practical sense.

The why

It seems, despite living through a once-in-a-century pandemic, our interest in actually completing the task still wavers. However, top of the list of benefits is peace of mind – saving cost, time and heartache. Doing the work to have everything in place means medical professionals will be guided by your voice, your loved ones won’t have to bear the burden of guessing what you would want, and you’ll know that your heirs will receive the accounts and assets that you intended for them. It may not make it easier to say goodbye but should make the aftermath a lot easier. Another beautiful potential benefit, perhaps even the most important one? Quelling the potential for intra-family strife during an already stressful time. Proper planning could help protect sibling and family relationships, which can get ugly when it comes to medical and financial matters. Experts recommend making your wishes clear and communicating them well before your passing, particularly if you’re part of a blended family.

The what

You’ll want to put some strong safeguards in place. Ask your medical and financial professionals if you need any or all of these documents. Don’t be intimidated. You don’t have to codify everything at once, and many are fairly straightforward. The more emotional tasks like writing letters of love or an ethical will, which outlines your values, may actually be the hardest.

Financial power of attorney. Durable powers of attorney give someone permission to make decisions on your behalf – anything from communicating with your cable company to dealing with banking, real estate, business and legal matters. POLST forms outline physician orders for life-sustaining treatment for those with serious conditions, indicating things like whether you’d like CPR, mechanical ventilation, feeding tubes or ICU treatment. Medical power of attorney. Sometimes called a living will or advanced directive, this outlines medical treatments you want and those you don’t and authorizes a proxy to make decisions for you.

A last will and testament.

Beneficiary forms. For insurance policies, retirement accounts and some other assets, the beneficiary form prevails over the will. A declaration of guardian appoints someone to look after your minor children. A trust. In many states, a living trust can be used to transfer assets and personal property in an orderly and more private manner than a will and can even stipulate special provisions such as age-based distribution so young adults don’t inherit all at once.

The where and how

If you need help getting started, first get organized. Discover what you already have. For example, you may already have a healthcare proxy. From there, make an appointment with an attorney who specializes in estate or elder care law to review what you have and help you fill any gaps. Include your financial advisor to ensure you’ve made a plan for all relevant assets. You may want to also make an advanced care planning appointment with your doctor. Often this can be done remotely (two 30-minute appointments are covered by Medicare, as is advanced planning for a cognitively impaired patient). Be sure to ask so you’ll know what your financial liability may be. Once gathered, store all relevant paperwork in one place. Some prefer a binder in a safe deposit box, but another secure way may be an online vault that allows you to grant differing levels of access to those you trust most. Just make sure your family members and right hand professionals know where to find these important documents and how to access them.

The who

Last, but certainly not least, make time to share your decisions with those they’ll affect. Talk to your loved ones about your healthcare and financial plans and preferences, where important documents live and how to access them. Your advisor can help you set up regular family meetings to address who inherits what and why, as well as other details. Of course, the most important thing is to take the time to tell your family just how much you love them. Raymond James is not affiliated with any organizations mentioned. Suzie TK Snippets

By: Suzie Tyler

COVID changed our world! For some, it was an opportunity to make money! But others found it as an occasion to serve! Neighbors and churches helped where they could. Shelves, for the first time in my lifetime, were empty! We were unable to find basic food needs and supplies of toilet paper, Lysol spray, or hand sanitizer. It gave us a new feeling of fear never experienced before by most of us! People became afraid of the dreaded diagnosis. Some died from a lack of the correct treatment and medication. Many were afraid to go out in public without hazmat attire, a mask, and carrying a can of Lysol spray. Others refused to wear any protection. Several guidelines were basic rules of cleanliness, like washing your hands and covering your mouth when you sneeze, that we should practice daily, but were misplaced in our behavior habits. Today, things are back to a sense of “normalcy.” I hope we can remember to continue the basic rules of hygiene, not just for protection from COVID but also for flu, colds, and other communicable diseases. We will never go back to what it was before COVID, but hopefully, we can learn from the experience and move forward more knowledgeable than before the pandemic. The biggest lesson I want to glean from it is to be prepared for the next crisis, regardless of what it is. Physically and spiritually. I am eating healthier, which has made an enormous difference in how I feel. I can breathe easier, my sinuses are better, and my energy level is higher! Even lost a few pounds. What have I done? I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables that aid in preventing inflammation, and please do not faint; I am cooking again! I plan to keep my faith and remember that I have a Heavenly Father who loves me and cares about my problems. November is cooler weather as we prepare for the holidays and winter months with a new year on the horizon! It is also my birthday month, with another year added to the notch on my belt! Have a great month, and love your neighbor as yourself. We are all in this together!

Fish Tales with Mike Brower How to get divorced in one holiday season… Now is the time to be getting the fishing gifts you want in the ear of whoever will be buying Christmas. If you wish a forward-facing sonar (FFS), you need to find ways to get the hint out to the gift giver. Things like talking about how seeing sideways underwater is so lame, how you don’t fish sideways, or how you feel emasculated by not having a FFS.

Tasty Donuts Donut • Croissant • Kolache • Fruit Sticks • Burrito Biscuit • Muffin • Coffee

Get creative with reasons to spend that money on fishing, not on the kids’ college or Christmas presents. I mean, they live there rent-free and don’t need gifts. You must let your spouse know that if you had FFS, you could win more money fishing and the edge it would give you. Then, work that into how you can break even on entries and expenses and not lose money, which would mean more money for food or enough to go out to eat at some fast-food place or buy shoes for the rug rats. Be creative and convincing; for goodness sake, keep a straight face. Publisher’s note: I was asked to give this piece a title. I did. LOL ~ Debbie

What a place to be...waking up in the mornings, overlooking the lake on SW Arkansas best kept secret, Beautiful Lake Erling. Privacy, seclusion, and serenity, all while watching the deer, turkey, and other wildlife in your own back yard. You are steps away from some of the South’s best fishing. These beautiful lots with lake frontage are limited and are beginning to sell quickly. This is a gated subdivision with limited access. Lakefront property is extremely hard to find and availability is very limited on this lake. B.A.S.S. ranked Lake Erling the top 100 lakes in the United States.
