The traction. These are clearly distinguishable on an EKG. A PAC is early and narrow (since the impulse will go through the AV node), while a PVC is early and wide (since it does not, and must travel cell to cell). My opinion is that frequent PVCs at your level is somewhere between “not an issue” and “dire.” One study showed that people who had no known heart disease but more than 30 PVCs an hour (720 in 24 hours) have an increased risk of heart disease over people with fewer than 30 per hour. The overall increase in risk is not large in absolute terms, however. Although there is treatment that can reduce PVCs, it’s not clear that this reduces the risk of heart disease, and some treatments actually increase mortality risk. I recommend treatment for frequent PVCs only if there are very bothersome symptoms that are clearly related to the PVCs, or in the very infrequent event of someone with so many PVCs that the fast heart rate damages the heart. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains the more common heart-rhythm disturbances in greater detail. Helping to Save Houston’s Pets
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m heartbroken over the ongoing disaster in south Texas and Louisiana, and especially for the thousands of pets being displaced and separated from their owners. It stirs up terrible memories of Hurricane Katrina and all the lost pets from that storm. Is there anything that we, who are in safe places, can do to help these pets and owners who have lost everything? -- Carol in Buffalo, New York DEAR CAROL: Twelve years ago, I wrote about the problems caused by Katrina’s flooding, including pets being displaced and sent to shelters across the country. There was a huge
increase of diseases like heartworm in pets who were lost outdoors for many days. Since then, a lot has changed. Disaster planning now requires that pets be considered in cities’ evacuation plans. Shelters in hurricaneprone areas have developed disaster plans that include ways to effectively manage an influx of hundreds of animals. Ahead of Harvey, many shelters in the evacuation zones transferred their adoptable occupants to other states to make room for rescued pets. Local shelters are networking more closely with each other, with national rescue groups and with the public (thanks in part to social media like Twitter) to coordinate transfer of animals to overflow shelters. For example, one shelter, Austin Pets Alive!, is taking in pets by the truckload and for several days has coordinated transfers, as well as calls for volunteers and supplies, via Twitter. You may be able to donate supplies directly to Texas shelters that need them (by ordering them on Amazon, for example) or by donating money to national rescue organizations like HSUS or the ASPCA. Can it affect other parts of the body? Is it deadly? -- Anon. ANSWER: Demodex folliculorum is a mite, a small (0.1 mm) arthropod that lives on human skin in hair follicles. There is debate whether they cause disease, specifically inflammation of the eyelids. Most opinions I read suggest they do not. However, there are reports of eye symptoms in some people with more than usual amounts of Demodex, which can be treated with medication. In most people, Demodex is considered part of the normal flora, like the bacteria and fungi we carry around as well. •••

The Hunt For Safety By Craig W. Armstrong
If you're a seasoned hunter, you've probably heard all of this before, but a refresher course never hurts. If you're new to hunting, these tips might keep you safe. Take a moment to give this a read and avoid trouble on the game trail. Humans have been hunting since the beginning of time, first for food and survival and currently for food and sport. Hunting is a way of life engrained in American culture, and many learn to do it at an early age. Because hunting involves firearms and bows and arrows, safety is important. Here are some tips to follow in the field. When dealing with firearms, one rule applies above all else: TREAT EVERY GUN AS A LOADED GUN. Guns are deadly weapons and should be respected. They should never be pointed at something you do not intend to shoot. When you are ready to fire a gun, make sure you know what you are firing at. Never shoot at movement or sound. You can't un-fire the weapon, so make sure your target is not another person. Next, consider the transportation of your weapon. Make sure the weapon's safety is on until you are ready to fire. As you walk the woods stalking your game, keep the barrel of

the gun pointed down. At some point during your hunt, you will probably need to climb something. Never climb with your gun, even if the safety is on. Ask your hunting buddy to hold your weapon while you do your climbing. Then, have them hand back your weapon to you. Do the same for them. Don't hunt alone. The wilderness can be a dangerous place. Accidents can happen and being alone can make matters worse. Should you choose not to hunt with a buddy, let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return. It is a good idea to wear hunter's orange and bring along a first aid kit. An orange vest and/or pants will allow others to see you more easily. A first aid kit won't take up a lot of room and it's better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it. Speaking of gear, make sure all your gear, including your weapon, is in working order before you set out on your hunt. Finally, don't drink and hunt. There will be plenty of time to have a few cold ones once the hunt is over. Once you fire the shot and drop the game, don't assume it's over. Check the animal and make sure it is dead. You don't want to wind up with a deer waking up in the back of your truck. Hunting is a sport with a history like no other. It is truly something the whole family can enjoy. Just make sure you follow these safety rules and use common sense.

Get Out The Blanket For Your House
August 1-September 6, 2017
Volume 12, Week 32
By Sam Erickson
With colder temperatures coming, you might be thinking about making some additions that will help your home and your pocketbook get through the winter unscathed. Many people automatically think of drafty places in the home like doorsills or older windows. It's a great idea to pay attention to these, but insulation actually has a much greater effect. Rather than a quick draft, poor insulation is like a slow sieve, leaking energy at every surface of your home. Fall is the perfect time to install more insulation in your home. The first step is to find out how much insulation you actually have. Crawl up in to your attic and look at the depth of the insulation there. That can offer you a clue about the quality of the rest of the insulation in your home. There are also numerous organizations that will
come out and do a home energy audit for you. Having an energy audit is a good idea for a number of reasons, including the fact that it will reveal the quality of insulation in hard-to-check places like inside your walls. These days, you've got several options for home insulation. Most people think of giant rolls of pink, and these rolls or batts are still readily available. Made of fiberglass or rock wool, they are easy to install and relatively cheap. They are also cut to standard widths to fit between wall studs or floor joists in the ceiling. You might also look into professional installation of loose-fill, rigid foam or foam-in-place insulation. Loose-fill insulation can be blown into place, making it useful for odd-shaped places like roofs or ducting where it can be difficult to install other kinds of insulation. Rigid foam can be applied to exterior walls and has a higher R-rating based on thickness. Each type of insulation is given an R-rating, essentially a measure of how much resistance to heat flow the product has. As you do your research, you'll quickly learn the R-values of different types of insulation. Remember that these are based on depth as well, and the resistance to heat
will change based on how much material you put into your house. Each region of the country has different recommendations for the amount of insulation you should have, so check with your contractor before proceeding to maximize your investment. Insulation is one of the most effective ways you can reduce your energy expenditures, offering a much faster return on your investment than other options. In addition to keeping your home warm in the winter, insulation can keep the heat out in the summer, doubling your investment. Once you've completed your renovation, you can cozy up for the winter under the new blanket for your house.
