• It was pioneering MexicanAmerican musician Carlos Santana who made the following by Samantha Weaver sage observation: “The most valuable possession you can own is an open heart. The most powerful weapon you can be is an instrument of peace.” • Those who study such things say that men who tend to be womanizers when they’re single are more likely to be jealous husbands once they’re married. • The beginning of a new school year seems a

good time to note the origin of that lunchtime favorite, peanut butter. A Canadian named Marcellus Gilmore Edson patented the product in 1884, but it didn’t become popular in the United States until 1898. That was when John Harvey Kellogg’s Western Health Reform Institute began selling it at expensive health care institutions. It seems that protein-packed peanut butter was perfect for elderly patients who had trouble chewing. • Rats tend to be right-handed, too. Or, rather, “right-pawed.” • Standing desks, stand ready: There’s a new trend in workspaces. It seems that standing up while working isn’t enough to counteract the detrimental health effects of sitting in an office chair all day. Enter Fluidstance, a company that wants to help you surf your way through the workday. Their balance boards, designed to be used with standing desks, reportedly increase heart rate and improve range of motion, allowing users to burn calories while burning their way through the mundane tasks of office life. • Driving isn’t the only activity that is dangerous to mix with alcohol. Statistics show that 40 percent of skiers who get injured in the French Alps are legally drunk. ••• Thought for the Day: “Many people consider the things government does for them to be social progress but they regard the things government does for others as socialism.” — Earl Warren © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

I just finished binge-watching “Glow” on Netflix, and I have to know if it will be back for another season. — Frank C., Albany, New York “Glow,” which premiered on the streaming network in June, will indeed have a 10-episode season two. The exact date has not yet been announced. For those unfamiliar with the series, the based-on-real-lifeevents wrestling comedy is set in 1985 and centers on Ruth Wilder (played by “Community” alum Alison Brie), a struggling actress who stumbles upon her latest gig of starring in a new concept entertainment series about women wrestlers, aka the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (GLOW). *** I saw a commercial on PBS for a movie called “Farthest.” Can you tell me what that’s about? — Kenny T., via email My New York colleague, Michael Dressel, attended the press screening of the documentary for me. Here’s what he reported back: “’The Farthest’ celebrates 40 years (and counting) of the Voyager interstellar mission. The twin unmanned spacecraft, each no larger than a compact automobile, launched in 1977 on a ‘grand tour’ of the outer planets of the solar system — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. “The two-hour film features interviews with the Voyager mission team, capturing the tension and elation of a historic mission that sent back unprecedented data and imagery. The film is both an adventure story and an aspirational tale, one in which mankind hopes to find something of itself in the vastness of space. Throughout its far-flung odyssey, the Voyager mission is an emblem of hope and human curiosity. “Included on each craft is a pressing of the Golden Record. Made under direction of famed astronomer Carl Sagan, this message in a bottle — a primer of life on Earth for any extraterrestrial being that might encounter it — includes music from Beethoven to Chuck Berry, messages of greeting, nature sounds and pictures of Earth and its inhabitants.

Alison Brie in “Glow” “In one particularly poignant moment, the Voyager craft, its mission complete, turns its camera back to capture Earth as a pale blue dot in the expanse of space, now one of the most famous images of our planet, which Sagan poetically described as the place where ‘everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives ... on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.’” *** When will “Vikings” be back? It seems like forever since there’s been a new episode. — Gian W., via email I know the wait seems long when it’s an awesome show like the Travis Fimmel-starring historical drama. Travis plays Ragnar Lothbrok, a farmer who rises to fame by successful raids into England, and eventually becomes a Scandinavian king. “Vikings,” which is based on historical events, will be back for 20 new episodes when season five premieres Nov. 29 on the History channel. At an estate sale, I purchased a set of salt and pepper shakers. What attracted me to them is the fact they are only 2 inches high. The shakers are in the design of a boot with spurs. I paid $5 for them and hope I got a good deal. — Cindy, Lakewood, Colorado Miniature salt and pepper shakers have become quite popular with collectors. I contacted a collector, who believes the set you bought could be worth about $25. You also might get a copy of the “Antique Trader Salt and Pepper Price Guide,” by Mark Moran and published by Krause Books. *** I have some Santa Clara Indian pots that date from the teens and 1920s. I would like to have them appraised, but the professionals I contacted charge a great deal for this service. Is it possible to find someone who can help me who is more affordable? — Sue, New Mexico As I often have written in this column, a free or cheap appraisal is generally worthless. Your pots are probably valuable, and you need a competent appraiser to determine just how valuable. If you can’t afford to hire a professional, then simply enjoy your pots for their beauty.

I have a paperweight made by Michael O’Keefe. Is it worth keeping? — Ben, Chesterfield, Missouri Michael O’Keefe, a glass artist based in Seattle, is best known for his three-dimensional paperweights featuring soft, subtle colors. His work is easy to identify, since each piece is signed and dated on the bottom. O’Keefe’s paperweights are quite collectible, but only you can determine if the one you have is worth keeping. *** I have an old frame that has rounded glass and wonder if it has any value. — Mary, Minnesota I examined the picture you sent me, and I think your frame was made during the 1930s and is probably worth about $50. Since you didn’t send measurements, it could be worth a little more or a little less, depending on size. *** I have a child’s book, “Mickey Mouse in the Wild West,” published by Walt Disney. It is in fairly good condition. What can you tell me about it? — Mark, Missouri Your book was published in 1973 and is worth about $6.

Anxious Dog Needs Socializing DEAR PAW’S CORNER: No matter what I do, I can’t get my 1-year-old shorthaired pointer, “Blue,” to act appropriately around other dogs. I tried taking him to the dog park a few times since adopting him, but he becomes hard to control after seeing dogs on the other side of the fence. How can I socialize my dog? -- Frustrated in Cincinnati DEAR FRUSTRATED: At the risk of being blunt, forget about the dog park for a while. Blue needs to be able to respond to basic commands like “sit” and “stay,” and he needs to remain calm in situations with other dogs. Neither of these things is happening when you take him to the dog park. Blue’s behavior suggests he’s worried about the situation that you’re taking him into. Who are those dogs? What is this place? Is it safe? He doesn’t know, and he doesn’t know what to do, and he’s acting up. You must find what Blue’s anxiety triggers are. Chances are he is getting stressed well before he reaches the park. How do you do this? Teach Blue a basic command, like “sit” or “lie down,” until you are confident Blue will do it immediately. Later, on your walks, give him this command. If he responds well, he’s probably calm and focused, which is good. If his response falters or he doesn’t obey at all, something is up -he’s getting distracted or stressed. Blue needs to develop confidence that he will be OK in unfamiliar situations. There are a number of methods to do this, and you can learn how by working with a trainer on ways to ease him into new environments. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Bad Sofa? Upholstery Could Be The Answer. By Tresa Erickson

The sofa in your sunroom has definitely seen better days. The cushions sag, the fabric is stained and the pillows are torn. The time has come to throw it out, right? Maybe, but then again, maybe not. Take a good look at that sofa. Is the construction solid? If so, then having it reupholstered might be the more cost-effective solution.

Before you start looking for fabric, inspect your sofa carefully. Is the frame sturdy? Is it free of rot, mildew and other signs of water damage? Are the springs in good condition? If so, it might be worth saving and make a good candidate for reupholstering. If you have no experience in reupholstering, you will probably want to hire someone to do the job for you. Look for an upholsterer just like you would any other professional. Get recommendations from friends and family, conduct interviews and ask to see a sample of their work. Check out references, compare pricing and choose the one that works best for you. Once you have found an upholsterer, have them check out your sofa and make sure it is suitable for reupholstering. If they give you the go-ahead, you may start the search for fabric. Depending upon shape of the piece and your tastes, you may have your sofa reupholstered in one or more fabrics. Check with your upholsterer. They may have some suggestions and perhaps even some samples to show you. If not, shop at stores that sell upholstery fabric and select several suitable for your décor that will hold up to wear and tear and resist stains. Keep in mind that the more texture in the fabric, the better it will hide stains. You will need several yards of fabric, 20 or more, so pay attention to the price per yard. Ask for samples of the fabrics you choose. That way, you can see how they will look in your sunroom at various times of the day. Once you have selected fabric, speak to your upholsterer. They may be able to order it for you at a discount. If they can’t, they should be able to tell you how much to purchase. Once you have selected fabric, take a sample of it to your upholsterer and go over the details with them. Determine how you want the fabric to run on your sofa, whether you want welt and what, if any extras, you would like to have on your sofa. Make sure you and your upholsterer are on the same page. Having your sofa reupholstered will take time, but it might be less expensive to go that route than to buy a new sofa. Find out all of the details and then make your decision.

• Here’s a great recipe for DIY dishwasher pods for use in your automatic dishwasher: Mix 2 cups of baking soda, 2 cups of borax, a half cup of salt and 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil. Stir in 1/2 cup vinegar and allow it to settle. Then scoop it into an ice-cube tray and pack tightly. Let it dry overnight, then pop your pods out into an airtight baggie or jar. Label and store in a cool place. Use one per washing cycle. • To get paint splatter off your hands after painting, try this old kitchen trick: Wet hands and then pour sugar or salt into palms. Use it as an abrasive to scrub paint away. • Waxed paper can shine a kitchen or bathroom faucet. Simply use it to buff away the marks. No spray cleaner necessary. • “If you have dirty blinds, keep in mind that spraying them with a liquid is going to turn the dust to muck.

Radish Crostini With Herbed Butter “Firsts” come to mind as fall approaches. First smile, first tooth, first day of school. The list continues for a lifetime really, if we had the inclination to keep track. Even those little milestones missing from developmental charts are highlights of growing, changing and understanding the world around us -- like planting a bean in an empty milk carton in elementary school, and being amazed when it grows right before our eyes. Another first! Remember that? I do, and that’s when my curiosity about growing things in dirt took root. The following spring, I bought radish seeds with allowance money and dug right in to plant the easyto-grow vegetable in a small quadrant by Mom’s sunny flower garden. When the green seedlings grew 3-4 inches tall, I learned to thin out the neat little rows. (Little did I know then that the supernutritious, mild-tasting and tender microgreens I plucked from the soil would become the culinary trend they are today for garnishing soup, pizza and open-faced sandwiches.) Harvesting mature rosy-red radishes less than three weeks after planting was rewarding for an impatient kid like me. Then, as temps began to drop in August, I eagerly planted the remaining seeds in the packet for a successful second harvest come September. Now is a good time to plant radish seeds for fall.

Choose a traditional easy-to-grow variety, or try something new, like heirloom watermelon radishes for their green exteriors and rosy flesh. Whether you grow your own, or buy a colorful bunch from your market, enjoy dipping radishes in coarse salt for a classic French-style snack, slice and toss for a crunchy addition to a lettuce salad or try this yummy crostini appetizer using herbed butter that kids will love to stir up and slather on toasted baguette halves.

RADISH CROSTINI WITH HERBED BUTTER 1 stick soft unsalted butter (8 tablespoons) 3 tablespoons chopped fresh chives or fresh dill with extra for garnish Sea salt 1 medium baguette sliced in half lengthwise and grilled on cut side 8 radishes sliced in rounds Freshly ground black pepper In a small mixing bowl, combine soft butter with chopped chives or dill. Spread butter over cooled baguette halves. (If you have extra herb butter, use as a topping on vegetables or meat and fish.) Slice bread, add radish slices and top with ground pepper and chopped herbs. Arrange on a large platter and serve as an appetizer. •••

Trying to Fire Bad VA Employees The Department of Veterans Affairs doesn’t typically air its dirty laundry in public, but a recent press release included the headline “MSPB forces VA to take back fired official” -- just when we thought they were able to unload bad employees. In April 2017, the director of a VA medical center was demoted. The center kept running out of critical supplies because it had no inventory system, and the surgical supplies they did have were frequently kept in dirty storage areas. The VA Office of the Inspector General report used the phrase “the highest level of chaos.” In three years there had been over 190 reports of compromised patient safety. Multiple serious surgeries had to be canceled due to lack of equipment. In short, the place was a mess. The VA demoted the medical director within hours. In June, President Donald Trump signed the VA Accountability Act, which speeds the process of getting rid of rotten employees. Enter the VAOIG, which found another reason to fire the guy: As part of yet another investigation of this employee, it discovered he had been sending VA emails to his personal accounts as well as to his wife, emails that contained sensitive personnel info as far back as 2012. He refused to give her email address, claiming spousal privilege (which didn’t stop the VAOIG from finding it, of course). The guy was fired. One day later, the Merit Systems Protection Board issued a stay order: The VA couldn’t fire the guy until the MSPB waded through his claim of a wrongful termination. The former director is back at work, on the payroll, but in a role that keeps him away from patient care. The Office of Special Counsel will assess the information in light of the act the president signed in June.

It’s a Big Fight Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor’s world press tour was a brilliant marketing scheme that now has the entire world talking about the fight. Mayweather, at 49-0, is putting it all on the line to go 50-0, eclipsing Rocky Marciano’s record of 49 straight wins. He is a master showman and knows how to push people’s buttons better than anyone since Muhammad Ali. For at least his past 20 fights, Mayweather has played the villain, and he plays it with such sincerity that it’s really hard for a lot of people to root for him ... but you’ll watch, and he’ll keep cashing those $100 million checks. But Conor McGregor also is undefeated as a boxer. And he is a WORLD CHAMPION fighter. He is not a novice by any means. In terms of the pre-fight smack talk, there is little doubt that McGregor had the bigger mouth (and funnier lines) but that being said, the incessant profanities and racial allegations have unfortunately ruined much of that tour for posterity. Mayweather, knowing how to manipulate, has tried to frame this fight in racial terms. He claims that McGregor slurred him, he wants to go that way and give himself enough motivation to win and win BIG. McGregor, in turn, rightfully accused Mayweather of being a wife-beater.

© 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

That’s certainly not what this country needs right now. Mayweather needs to ditch that angle or else they should just call off the fight. First of all, it was already implied: We know that McGregor is white and Mayweather is black. To frame this fight as yet another “great white hope” misses the mark entirely, and it needs to stop. So, we know McGregor talks a big game. But this fight is something special, I can tell. It’s literally the biggest fight since Ali-Foreman in terms of hype. I’ve studied McGregor’s tapes, and this guy really has a shot at winning. He’s a FIGHTER; dismissing that is ridiculous. He beat the brakes off of Pauli Malignaggi, according to the leaked tapes of his second sparring match with McGregor. And while the clip of the fight shows a definite push and not a knockdown, the 20 seconds before that showed sweat spraying off Malignaggi’s head and him bailing into the ropes. It was an unfair fight because Paulie is older and out of shape, but I’m certain Paulie very much got the better of him in the early rounds. But the films — and his highlight reels from the UFC — show that McGregor has stunning accuracy and is a killer counterpuncher. He’s going to come out with savage fury and try to score the biggest upset in boxing history. McGregor is in serious shape and really believes he can do it. Self-actualization in action. He says he can break Mayweather’s guard, and I believe him. His biggest worry is being disqualified for an illegal strike. My money’s on McGregor. We soon shall see. Color Choices By Tresa Ericjson

Ask someone what their favorite color is, and chances are they won't say a neutral like white or gray. Ask someone what color their car is, however, and chances are they just might say a neutral. White, silver, black and gray are the most popular car colors in America and in many places around the world. Sure, there are various shades of white, silver, black and gray, but the fact remains that they are all neutrals. So, why do car buyers go for neutrals? There is no one clear answer, but many point to the investment factor. A car is a major

investment, and buyers need a car color they can live with for a long time to come. A bright yellow car at age 18 might be fun, but not so fun a few years later. Purchasing a different color of car is not an option for most people, nor is having the exterior repainted. Resale also factors into the equation. Bright yellow will not appeal to as many buyers as white or silver will. To ensure their car sells easily later, many buyers will purchase a neutral color. Neutrals also tend to hide dirt and damage better than bolder color choices. Lot selection may also play a factor in color choices. Pass by a few car lots, and you'll probably see more neutral colors than bold. Dealers know what color of cars are more likely to be bought and stock their lots with them. So, yes, while you might encounter some orange, red, blue and green cars, chances are they will be located in a sea of white, black, gray and silver. Budget, of course, is always a factor. Often, the bolder the color choice, the higher the price of the car. Bolder colors like red and orange require specialty paint, which increases the cost. While you may not notice the increase in the sticker price, you will most certainly see it should you order a car directly from the factory. Specialty reds, oranges and the like can add hundreds of dollars to the final price. Buyers may not care to fork over the cash for a specialty color, especially if there are other extras more important to them, like heated seats. Having a warm seat to slide into in frigid temperatures might outweigh

the need for a fiery red exterior. While neutrals are the most common car colors and therefore the easiest to find and buy, that doesn't mean buyers have to settle. There are various shades of white, silver, black and gray available from pearl white to matte black. As for buyers who have their heart set on a bolder color, they will find it. However, it may cost them, both in terms of time and money.
