“ I want to hear your stories and hopes for Albertus Magnus.”

Dear Alumni and Friends of Albertus, I am pleased to share with you the latest edition of From the Hill. Since the excitement of this past spring’s Presidential Inauguration and annual Commencement activities, all of us at Albertus Magnus have been preparing for the start of an exciting new academic year. In this second year of serving as your president, I am even more energized to lead. On August 26, we welcomed to campus the largest incoming first-year class since 2010, with more than 150 new students, joined by nearly 30 transfers, arriving to begin their studies at Albertus. The vice presidents and I, along with so many student and staff volunteers and Frankie Falcon, had the great privilege of helping the new students move into their residence hall. Admittedly exhausted at the end of the day, it was a joy for me to be present as these new Fearless Falcons and their parents joined our community, our family. Reflecting back on my first year, I spent considerable time listening and learning about this great College, its 93-year history of Catholic and Dominican, transformative education, and the so many alumni, faculty, staff, students,

and friends who uniquely define the Albertus family. My listening and learning agenda took me throughout the New Haven area, the state of Connecticut, across the country, and even to China. And while I learned much and am now able to advocate for this College from a more informed perspective, please be assured I remain passionate about meeting with you and others in the years to come. I want to hear your stories and hopes for Albertus Magnus. With regard to hopes for the College, this fall we will begin work on developing a new shared strategic vision and plan. Our new plan will include a compelling vision and key strategic priorities, emanating from our essential mission, seeking institutional distinction and sustained financial vitality as we sharpen our focus on the year 2025, the Centennial for Albertus Magnus College. In my Inauguration remarks I shared my belief that since the College’s founding in 1925, there has never been a time where the Catholic and Dominican, values- and liberalarts based education offered at Albertus is as needed or as relevant as it is today. I stand by that assertion. I look forward to meeting with and hearing from you. The future for Albertus Magnus College shines bright, and with your input, ideas, and continued support and generosity, we will turn that bright light into a beacon of hope and change for future students in the College’s second century and beyond.

President Camille @AlbertusPres

Commencement 2018 #Albertus2018

At the 95th Commencement Exercises held on May 20, 2018, Erik M. Clemons was the institution’s first Commencement speaker in 10 years. In keeping step with the Albertus commitment to foster a community in which our students take responsibility toward social justice, peace, and the common good, this year’s commencement theme was one of service. Each of the three Honorary Degree recipients—Clemons, Dr. Harold Attridge, and Jan Attridge— have made faith and empowerment a part of their professional callings and personal missions in helping others to reach their potential. For the many inspirational, motivational, and impactful messages Clemons left with the 2018 graduates, his last words were actually two questions on which he wanted them to ponder: What is your calling? What will be the impact you make on this world? albertus.edu/commencement

2 Fall 2018

Making an Impact Having risen from a poverty-stricken childhood living in the projects of Norwalk to what he now describes as a life of privilege, Erik M. Clemons explained to the Class of 2018 that the sum of his experiences, failures, tragedies, victories, and overcomings are what brought him to this point to speak. After bouncing from high school to high school—and finally graduating—to working more than a decade sorting letters for the U.S. Postal Service, he asked himself what contribution he wanted to make to the world. With that, and the belief in the power of goodness in the human spirit, Clemons decided to enroll full-time at Southern Connecticut State University, where he worked hard to earn his degree in sociology. Clemons believed his life was a miracle, and because God had allowed him to see success as he defined it, he would devote his life to saving others similarly. He eventually founded the Connecticut Center for Arts & Technology (ConnCAT) in New Haven, creating arts-based educational environments for at-risk public school students and career training programs for under- and unemployed adults.

“…there can be no revolution until there is reconciliation.”

2018 Honorary Degree Recipients The College’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to confer the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters upon three distinguished individuals at Albertus Magnus College’s 95th Commencement Exercises. This year’s honorees were Dr. Harold Attridge, Jan Attridge, and Erik M. Clemons. The Attridges and Mr. Clemons employ and promote in their professional and personal lives the values that the College upholds as tenets of an Albertus Magnus education.

He recalls a meeting at the home of a struggling mother of three, soon to be evicted, trying to solve the age-old issue of how to not simply survive but to overcome. He told the 2018 graduates that just after the meeting with this mother, his next appointment was to attend a speech given by a U.S. Senator and those in attendance were there to discuss the current president’s policies. The home in which the speech took place was just ½ mile away from the struggling mother’s, where the living conditions were a world apart, and yet only a few people of color were present. Clemons explained that he waited for a break in the conversation to finally ask the group at large, “How is it that you all can have a conversation about and strategize around what the country needs yet the country is not represented in this room?” He went on to explain, “…there can be no revolution until there is reconciliation.” “The world sorely needs you. Are you willing to love the people? You cannot serve the people unless you love the people. You can’t love the people unless you know the people. You can’t know the people unless you are willing to sit in the suffering that they are experiencing.”

Student Outcomes #AlbertusSuccessStory

College acceptance, career, graduation. What’s next? The National Association of Colleges and Employers’ First-Destination Survey captures data to measure recent college grads’ career success six months after receiving diplomas. This annual report is designed to provide national trends in weighing the value of higher education. How did Albertus Magnus fair? According to Patrick Clifford, director of career & professional development, 63% of recent Albertus grads are employed full-time, with an impressive 91% employed in a career related to their academic major, 33% are currently continuing their education. Under 4% are either seeking employment, working part-time, or not working. Alexandria Chan ’18 transferred to Albertus and quickly realized that its smaller campus bred a tight-knit community. She found that by exposing herself to different experiences outside of the classroom—like playing lacrosse, being a Resident Assistant, and tutoring other students— she became more prepared to face the challenges of her future. Alexandria credits Career Services for empowering her in starting early on a path to career growth and development. albertus.edu/2018Graduates

Meet the Class of 2018 Academically, Alexandria Chan ’18 kept herself pretty busy as an honors double-major in Biology and Chemistry. Internships, sports leadership, tutoring, and being involved on campus benefitted her in preparation for her post-graduate career. “Although the next step is really scary, the way Albertus has prepared me, I feel like I’m ready for it.” Next up: Alexandria begins a Ph.D. program in Pharmaceutical Sciences at University of Maryland. albertus.edu/Alexandria18 For many, the college experience is the ‘home away from home.’ When your birthplace is on the other side of the world from where you’re getting your college education, those words become meaningful in every facet of your daily life. For Jemaa Mwinila-Yuori ’18, his basketball teammates became his family. Throughout his college experience he felt supported and was taught to never give up and always persevere. When the time came to graduate, his father and uncle traveled from Accra, Ghana to bask in the glory of witnessing Jemaa receive his B.S. in Business Management. “It’s a blessing for me; a lot of people would love to be in this position. I want to embrace the moment and enjoy it while

it lasts.” Next up: Jemaa has returned to Albertus to study for his master’s degree. albertus.edu/Jemaa18 As Caroline Kobierowski ’18 reflects on her growth over the past four years, she recalls being a shy, awkward freshman. Through her Albertus experience as a biology major, she is more self-assured, confident, and knows that what she wants is to teach secondary education. “I have always been drawn to biology and finding out how exactly the human body functions. I was inspired to choose teaching as a career because I just love to help students learn in any way I can. Even on a personal level, I would love to be there for them for anything they need.” Caroline secured a highly competitive summer internship at Choate and credits Albertus for the professional opportunities available to her in strengthening her skills in preparation for moving ahead. Next up: working towards a teaching certificate. albertus.edu/Caroline18 Shamain McAllister ’18 shares her degree with her whole family due to their unconditional support throughout her four years. “Everything that I do is to make them proud so that we can all

better ourselves,” she says. On campus, Shamain acted as director of student concerns and was able to implement changes like obtaining free laundry, getting better pay for resident assistants, and revamping the student center. She feels invested in Albertus because of her success in student advocacy, seeing what they fought for come to light. Shamain received her bachelor’s degree in Health Care Management with a minor in Criminal Justice. Next up: returning to Albertus Magnus College for a master’s program in Public Administration. albertus.edu/Shamain18 Dalton Sargent ’18 found ‘home’ in Albertus because of the small class sizes and personable professors, and that’s how he chooses to remember his undergrad years. Although just a stepping stone for his future endeavors, it was campus tradition that touched his heartstrings. “I will always remember Homecoming; it shows the amazing spirit of Albertus and how passionate everyone is.” Next up: Sacred Heart University to pursue his master’s degree in Public Health. albertus.edu/Dalton18

Athletic Initiatives at Albertus #FearlessFalcons

During Dr. Camille’s first year as president, he laid out an ambitious plan for strengthening student engagement, wellness, and fitness. With 42% of the overall student body—and 39% of this year’s incoming class—participating in varsity athletics, we understand that sports are a vibrant part of campus life. Whether increasing the Division III athletics or enhancing the relationship between student and faculty, the goal is to continually grow our resources. As a new school year begins, we see many of his ideas becoming reality, serving the Albertus students and surrounding community for years to come. athletics.albertus.edu

The Albertus Magnus College Athletic Hall of Fame 2018 Induction Ceremony took place on Sunday, September 16, during Homecoming weekend. Inductees are Albertus alumni who have graduated at least five years prior to nomination, have lettered for at least two seasons in one varsity sport, and represent the Falcons in a positive manner both as an undergraduate student-athlete and as an alum.

The Office for Campus Activities launched new programs for group fitness and intramural sports this year. A Kickball League, which included a faculty and staff team, allowed recreation and competition between students and staff outside of business hours. Other programs being offered include Zumba, yoga, cardio classes, and a variety of intramural sports.

At a joint press conference with the City of New Haven on April 4, 2018, Albertus announced its plans to initiate a men’s ice hockey program via a unique partnership with the City and its historic Ralph Walker Skating Rink, which will serve as the home arena for Albertus Falcons ice hockey. In addition to bringing the first NCAA Division III hockey program to the greater New Haven area, Albertus Magnus, via its hockey coaches and players, will provide leadership in developing a Learn to Skate/Youth Hockey program for the City’s children. Finding just the right person to develop and lead the new program was key. “In a deep and qualified pool of over 100 applicants,” said President Marc M. Camille, “Kyle Wallack rose to the top.” Formerly the associate head coach of the University of Vermont men’s ice hockey team, Wallack was appointed the College’s first head coach of men’s ice hockey in June. The team will begin NCAA Division III intercollegiate play for the 2019–2020 season. Director of Athletics Jim Abromaitis adds, “Kyle brings with him to Albertus Magnus Athletics a wealth of experience and a history of success. He is well-known and well-respected among all in the hockey community not only locally but nationally as well. I don’t think there is anyone more prepared to put our new men’s ice hockey program on the map.” Hailing from West Hartford, Connecticut, Wallack’s résumé includes stints as head coach of Indiana Ice USHL, five seasons as assistant coach at Yale, two seasons as assistant coach at College of the Holy Cross and three seasons at Quinnipiac.

Central Connecticut State University alum and former assistant coach Lauren Pallone joins the Falcons family as the new Head Women’s Swim Coach & Aquatics Director, beginning with a competitive 2019– 2020 season. While coaching the Blue Devils, she helped the team achieve two NCAA Championship Division I qualifiers and numerous Northeast Conference champions.

Albertus Magnus is a member of NCAA Division III and participates in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). Beginning this fall, the College will sponsor 15 varsity sports—men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s lacrosse— with the addition of women’s field hockey, women’s swimming & diving and men’s ice hockey. Honor Roll of Donors #AllInForAlbertus

Each year, through the generosity of alumni and friends, scholarships are made possible which strengthen our commitment in supporting students on their journey to higher education. At our annual SOAR (Scholarship, Opportunity, Appreciation, Recognition) Reception, we welcomed the first recipients of The Silver Horn Scholarship— an endowed fund for which over $250,000 was raised at the inaugural gala in May 2018. Without you, those who face financial hardship may not be able to realize their full potential to serve their communities. We offer you our sincerest thanks for helping us to SOAR. soar.albertus.edu/silverhornfund

As the Class of 1967 approached our 50th College reunion, a desire to show appreciation for our Albertus experience emerged. We decided that the best way to do this was to reach across the decades. The Class of 1967 Memorial Scholarship was established to provide generous assistance to students who best exemplify those core values which continue to define an Albertus education.

Living Our Mission #DominicanPillars

Study. Prayer. Community. Service. The four Dominican Pillars are the foundation of campus life at Albertus. The College is rich in tradition and—although there is a willingness to evolve—we are reminded that the groundwork laid by the Dominican Sisters of Peace helps to foster the pursuit of truth, the willingness to serve, and the desire to create a more just and humane world. albertus.edu/DominicanMinistries

Sr. Ana González, a native of Mexico, recently made her Temporary Vows, marking her commitment as a member of The Dominican Sisters of Peace. This step, lasting at least three years, is a significant milestone in the journey to becoming a perpetually-vowed member. Having come to the United States at the age of 10, she first encountered the Dominican Sisters at Loyola University New Orleans, from which she graduated in 2002. After receiving her master’s degree in Communications from the University of Texas at El Paso, Sr. Ana reviewed her life. “I had my master’s degree, was turning 30, and had been working for 10 years in a job I liked, but still felt empty inside,” said Sr. Ana. “I felt defined by what I was doing, not who I was. As I searched, the question of entering religious life began to surface. I hadn’t seriously considered it before, but recalled my interaction with talented, educated, dynamic Dominican Sisters of Peace. I could feel something in me being stirred that was blossoming and life-giving.” Sr. Ana serves as coordinator of international admissions at Albertus Magnus, a founded ministry of the Dominican Sisters of Peace.

The Evolution of Tradition #AlbertusTradition

Albertus is rich in tradition, strengthened by our Dominican faith. We are reminded that through ritual we are grounded and recognize that it propels us forward to grow, to evolve. The oldest tradition on campus is the Candlelight Ceremony, symbolizing the passing of the light of knowledge by seniors to incoming students. This linking of ‘old’ and ‘new’ marks the search for truth in all its dimensions. This year’s Ceremony took place on September 6 as part of the first Convocation and students declared their vow to uphold the principles of honor in their academics, to abide by the regulations of the College, and to act respectfully with members of the community. As President Camille implored them to reflect upon, “How will you grow your light over the next four years? Will you coast along or will you challenge yourself? Will you learn or will you lead? Dare to dream… Prepare to soar…We may soar fearlessly as Falcons. I look forward to soaring with you.” albertus.edu/convocation

Athletic Hall of Fame

Celebrating the 93rd year since its creation, this year’s Founders’ Day ceremony took place September 21, 2018. It has been the tradition of the College community to honor the pioneering women of the Dominican Sisters of Peace and their continuing sponsorship of the mission of Albertus Magnus College. The Celebration began with a welcome by President Camille and introductions by Sr. Anne Kilbride, O.P. The first presentation, “Dominicans: Business Leadership as Mission,” was led by Sr. Patricia Twohill, O.P., Prioress of the Dominican Sisters of Peace. After guests enjoyed lunch and an art exhibit at MacDonough Gallery featuring “The Jamaica Mission Experience,” the afternoon panel continued with “Business Leadership as Service” as several alumni speakers, moderated by William Aniskovich, chair of the Business and Leadership Department, described how they incorporate the four pillars of a Dominican education into their careers. The highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of the VERITAS Awards, presented to an individual or group whose dedication complements and supports our mission, as well as demonstrates service to community, the pursuit of truth (VERITAS), exemplifies Dominican values and holistic education, witnesses a life of integrity, and embraces social justices based on the common good. This year’s VERITAS Awards were presented to two individuals who connect the Business and Leadership programs to the Dominican tradition of the College: Dr. Nancy Fallon ’79 and Dr. Clara Munson. Dr. Fallon began her career at Albertus in 1990 and is now a full-time tenured professor who serves as director of the accounting program. She has assisted in the creation and implementation of the major in Finance, oversaw the development of new programs in Entrepreneurship, Health Care Management and Personal Financial Specialist, and created the MS in Accounting Program. During her tenure she has attended and presented at numerous conferences and has been a member of and chaired many Albertus committees. Dr. Munson also began her career at Albertus in 1990 and is a full-time tenured professor. She has served as the International Accreditation Council for Business Dr. Nancy Fallon ’79 Education (IACBE) representative, been awarded a fellowship at the Yale School of Management Executive Program, attended and presented at numerous conferences, and has been a member of and chaired many Albertus committees. In addition, Dr. Munson has led a mission experience trip for a group of business students to Jamaica in conjunction with the Dominican Sisters of Peace where they assisted adults in developing business plans and worked with youth and children’s programs.

There are few as deeply vested in the history and community of Albertus Magnus College as Rosanne Zudekoff. As an alumna, former President of the Albertus Alumni Association, former member of the Albertus Board of Trustees, major donor to the College, and a valued 22-year member of the College’s Communications, Marketing, and Alumni Relations teams, we are fortunate that she has assured us that she’s just a phone call away from her Albertus family. Rosanne received the Alumna of the Year Award for Loyalty and Service to the College in 1995, and the VERITAS Award in 1996. Indeed, the College continues to be blessed with Rosanne’s service, guidance, and inimitable style. Rosanne joined Albertus in 1996 after an illustrious 31-year corporate career with SNET (Southern New England Telephone) where she held several positions in Public Relations and Corporate Relations, including Director of Internal Communications, Director of Creative Resources, Director of Information, and Director of Media Relations. She started at SNET in 1965 as a writer for the employee magazine. Immediately following her Albertus graduation with a degree in English, Rosanne’s first job was as an editorial assistant for a research publication at Yale. Rosanne’s commitment to the City of New Haven is legendary. She has served on the boards of the New Haven Free Public Library Foundation; New Haven Sister Cities, Inc.; the New Haven Colony Historical Society (now the New Haven Museum); Fund for Women & Girls of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven; and the Quinnipiack Club. Community Outreach #AlbertusGarden

The Community Garden, which is located in the Sansbury Hall backyard, provides beauty to the College and bounty to the community all summer long. Through the efforts and dedication of faculty and staff, it has become a campus resource integrating high impact practices (HIP) and experiential learning into course studies. Equally important, as the campus is located adjacent to the Newhallville section of New Haven (a neighborhood affected by high levels of unemployment and food insecurity) the project has allowed Albertus to address serious social and economic issues and contribute back to the community as a committed partner. According to Dr. Ross Edwards, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and one of the leads in this project, by the end of this season’s harvest, five collections of vegetables will have been donated to St. Ann’s Soup Kitchen. The goal in the 2018–2019 academic year will be to engage more students and local organizations to promote the health and well-being of our neighbors. albertus.edu/CommunityGarden

Building a bright future in which others may thrive At Albertus, experiential learning is highly regarded not just for the value students gain through internships, volunteer work, and research, but also for the depth of knowledge garnered through the physical and emotional experience of ‘doing.’ One of the groups on campus that focuses on such practices is People Helping People, lead by student advisor and assistant director of career and professional development Wiley Dawson. The club, which involves students, faculty, and community in service projects and civic engagement initiatives, allows the chance to respond to social issues like building homes for families in need through the Habitat for Humanity organization. This past March, a group of nine students and three faculty spent one week in Bridgeport honing skills and learning life

lessons that cannot be taught in a classroom. Over the course of physically demanding 8-hour long days, students worked in a warehouse to pre-fabricate the parts of the home, some picking up tools for the first time. Valuable lessons like learning to really listen before following directives, being assertive versus being aggressive, and taking safety precautions became the foundation upon which the ground was laid for building their involvement. The students kept journals throughout the week, broke bread amongst the members of the community in which they were helping to rebuild, and presented at Experiential Learning Day in April to share with the rest of the college. For the students, the Habitat for Humanity project changed their lives forever. For the recipients, it has given them a chance to succeed with the support of newfound friendships.

Being Neighborly in New Haven “For any college that is part of the New Haven community to make meaningful contributions… we have to be a meaningful partner,” said President Camille at an East Rock Community Management Team meeting in November 2017. By inviting members of the community to use campus facilities, attend events, volunteer for College service projects, and offer suggestions, he encouraged collaboration.

When Dr. Marc M. Camille became the 14th president of Albertus Magnus College, he stressed his belief in building a stronger city-school partnership to various community management teams. Over the course of last year, he has made good on his word by attending meetings for Ronan-Edgehill Neighborhood Association, East Rock Community Management Team, and Newhallville Community Management Team to improve relations and communication.

Albertus Receives $300K Department of Justice Grant

Business Club Travels on Mission Trip to Jamaica

In late August, Albertus Magnus announced that the College had been awarded a grant totaling $300,000 by the United States Justice Department’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW). This grant, one of only three awarded to Connecticut colleges, allows Albertus Magnus to proactively strengthen services and raise awareness on campus throughout the surrounding community so that victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and/or stalking will be more likely to come forward and seek support. The funds will help develop and implement the Safe and Sound Students (SASS) Project, which will serve to formalize the commitment between the College and our community partners, further strengthening its response to any type of violence taking place on campus and within the community. Albertus Magnus Vice President for Student Services Andrew Foster said, “This grant provides the financial resources, training, and opportunity to create an even safer campus environment for our students.” Additionally, it will help to increase rapid response and effectiveness should an incident occur and build the capacity with campus systems to prevent such incidents from happening in the first place. “We look forward to supporting our students and to the opportunity to work closely with our local partnering agencies,” said Director of Residential Life and Community Standards Samantha Quinn, deputy Title IX coordinator.

Professor of Management and Business Club faculty advisor Dr. Clara Munson traveled once again with students to Jamaica on a service mission in 2018. Sr. Jean Poor, member of the leadership team of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, has been involved in the Jamaica mission for several years. She, along with several international partners, have built projects with children, teens, adults, and people with disabilities in very poor sections of Jamaica. Because of this strong Dominican connection, the Dominican Sisters of Peace were willing to secure funding for Albertus students and their own experiential immersion trips to Jamaica. For our students, these programs can teach far more than what they learn in the classroom through contemplation, alongside faculty. According to Sr. Anne Kilbride, O.P., assistant to the President for Dominican Mission, Jamaica has a high unemployment rate despite its wealth of creative and innovative thinkers due to lack of resources available postgraduation. On this mission trip, Albertus students’ main objective was to lecture on how to start and maintain a business. This phenomenal experiential learning opportunity— to present themselves in front of adults and teach them, while in a new and sometimes threatening environment— taught them camaraderie, teamwork, and cohesiveness. “How the four pillars live out here are very important,” said Sr. Anne. “These people are very vulnerable, very poor in our eyes, but very rich in joy and life in their own culture. We learn this through the four pillars of Dominican life.”

Why Choose a Dominican Education? While at Albertus Magnus we are blessed with religious presence on staff, the future of Dominican education falls largely in the hands of dedicated lay women and men, carrying out the mission of sisters and friars who founded many of these colleges. Their wisdom, faith, leadership, and knowledge is carried out as the vision and basis for our institutions. These men and women are entrusted to preserve its legacy, nurture the culture and engage the spiritual heritage for generations of students to come. The basis upon which a Dominican education is founded is the pursuit of truth (veritas), the integration of study and contemplation, seeing God in all things, compassion and justice, and engaged scholarship. The Albertus Magnus community engages in four pillars of the Dominican faith every day: study, prayer, community, and service. So why invest in a Dominican education? It is the Dominican tradition to not serve solely as an individual, but together as a community. Whether in a classroom, a laboratory, a garden, or a dorm, students and professors learn from one another in an atmosphere of openness and truthfulness. It is through conversation, sharing and mutual insight that one grows. Promotion of the common good is the sum total of having people of all walks of life reach their fullest potential, socially, economically, emotionally. As Erik M. Clemons said in his commencement address to the graduating class of 2018, he thanked President Camille for fostering an environment where students and faculty not just reach out, but do real outreach. And for this reason, a Dominican education will always be relevant.

PRAYER: our hearts are expanded, where we see the world as a bigger creation and feel God’s hand in things beyond our own lives; COMMUNITY: we see the strength in community and realize that to make an impact we must participate; SERVICE: at the end of a college career we understand how our world is tied together with other people’s worlds.
