“ Now, it is our time to add to that history, to create a bold and bright Albertus for tomorrow.”

Dear Alumni and Friends of Albertus, For a new college president, each and every day is filled with “firsts,” and this greeting to you is a very meaningful first for me. A few short months ago, I began my tenure serving as the 14th president of Albertus Magnus College. My passion and excitement for this great College grow stronger with each passing day, and it is a privilege to welcome you to the stories in From the Hill. I look forward to meeting and greeting you in person, on campus, and as I travel around the country in the months ahead. I am on a learning and listening tour. In addition to meeting with so many of our faculty, staff, and students, I’ve met elected officials, members of our faith communities, business and education leaders, and so importantly, our alumni. Recently, I was honored (and nervous!) to throw the ceremonial first pitch to alumna, trustee, and former Albertus softball player Tabitha Wazorko Manafort ’94 at the ribbon-cutting for the Shea Softball Complex (see story on page 3). We are excited to bring our Falcons softball games back to the heart of campus.

We are moving forward through innovation and purpose. Yet undeniably, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us: the pioneering Dominican Sisters who founded Albertus; the faculty, who continue to nurture our students; and the alumni who, decade after decade, use their Albertus educations to change the world for the better. Now, it is our time to add to that history, to create a bold and bright Albertus for tomorrow. In eight years, Albertus will celebrate its centennial, an historic milestone achievement. Together, our Albertus family will set the bar at nothing less than excellence. The legacy of Albertus alumni—the stories, traditions, and achievements chronicled in this edition of From the Hill— demonstrate the impact of our values- and liberal arts-based education and mission. We are preparing for a future that holds great promise for a vibrant and thriving Albertus. The theme of this issue is Legacy: Past Present Future. I invite you to explore the legacy of the #FearlessFalcons— in the classroom, on the court and field, and across the world. I want to hear YOUR stories. Call, email, tweet at me, follow my blog, or please come to an event and say, “hi.” I look forward to meeting you, and I am honored to serve as your president. Gratefully,

Marc M. Camille albertus.edu/firstonehundred

Legacy of Giving #AllInForAlbertus

Larry Cole ’97 was the first person to sign up for the innovative New Dimensions program here at the College in 1994. “I am proud of my alma mater for being a pioneer in providing educational opportunities for working adults. Even now, in retirement, I am grateful for the opportunities, experiences, and relationships that my Albertus education has afforded me,” he said. In 2015, he and his wife, Kathy, created and kicked off the AMpower Fund to provide financial assistance to non-traditional students, empowering them to keep on the path to a degree. The AMpower Fund now is endowed by an unrestricted bequest from the estate of Anna Fraulo ’48. When he heard the news, Cole could not speak for several moments: Anna Fraulo was the teacher who helped him make it through high school. “She saved my life.” The AMpower Fund will help many others to make dreams come true. albertus.edu/soar

There is a need, now more than ever, for an Albertus education in our global society. What will your Albertus legacy be? “W

e refer to students whose family members before them have also attended the College as legacies. Their presence is part of the legacy of a particular family line, a tradition that continues,” says Carolyn Behan Kraus ’86, vice president for development and alumni relations, herself the daughter, granddaughter and grandniece of alumnae. From a philanthropic perspective, Kraus notes that the idea of legacy is leaving one’s mark—“it is a treasure to share with the generations yet to come. An affirmation of the value of an Albertus education and what that means for the students of today and tomorrow.” Legacy, in fact, touches every part of the Albertus experience.

Philanthropy: builds buildings; adds and enhances academic and social programming; supports our student-athletes; allows the College to offer scholarships and grants to students of all ages; and the Fund for Albertus harnesses the power of unrestricted thinking and unrestricted possibilities…allowing the College to direct funds where they are most needed. The Generosity of Dr. Carol Ann Shea ’45 Dr. Carol Ann Shea ’45 was born in 1925, the year of the College’s founding, and died at the age of 90 in 2015. Her deep love for Albertus is reflected in her bequest to Albertus of more than $3.7 million, the largest unrestricted bequest received by the College. An English major at Albertus, she went on to earn an M.A. from Southern Connecticut State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. She had a lifelong career in education, starting as an elementary school teacher and retiring as an associate professor teaching in Southern’s graduate program. James O’Connor Shea, Carol’s brother, had deep respect for the excellent education his sister received here at Albertus. In her honor, he, too, left a bequest to the College, also unrestricted, of more than $1.1 million.

Carol Shea was a member of the Prospect Hill Society, the group honoring those alumni and friends who have indicated that they are remembering the College in their estate plans. A visit to our Planned Giving site will provide you with information about the Prospect Hill Society. If you are interested in exploring ways you can support Albertus Magnus College through a bequest or other planned giving program, please contact your attorney, financial advisor or Carolyn Behan Kraus, vice president for development and alumni relations, at 203-773-8502 or cbehan@albertus.edu. Golden Society Brunch and Reunion All members of the Golden Society received invitations to attend the first annual Golden Society Brunch and Reunion held on April 29. The College inducted the class of 1967 into the Golden Society and also presented the Alumni of the Year Awards to Barbara Popp Murphy ’58 (Alumni of the Year) and Diana Velez ’12 (Premier Achievement Award). The day included a festive champagne brunch with live jazz, a liturgy in memory of deceased classmates, tours of the campus, and tea in Rosary Hall. All alumni, especially members of the Golden Society, are welcome to attend the Golden Society Brunch & Reunion celebrating the Class of 1968 on April 28, 2018. albertus.edu/goldensocietygallery Be sure to send in your nominations for Alumni Awards. For information or to download the form, go to albertus.edu/ alumniawards.

From left: Ruth Decko Sullo, Mary Ann Wiedl, and Mary Ann Kosydar Sopoliga, members of the Class of 1967, celebrated their 50th Reunion and induction into the Golden Society in April.

On Friday evening, October 13, Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro, the author of “The Least Among Us-Waging the Battle for the Vulnerable,” opened the College’s inaugural Homecoming weekend with a talk and book signing. Congresswoman DeLauro is a tireless and determined leader in the fight for working families. During more than 25 years in Congress, she has been—and continues to be—on the front lines of the most important battles to protect and strengthen the social safety net she believes represents our responsibility to one another to help each other in a time of need. Also on Friday, the College hosted a “Party in the Pub,” with young alumni and students providing an opportunity to reconnect before the Homecoming festivities the following day. Hundreds of alumni, parents, and friends traveled back to New Haven on Saturday to join students, faculty, and staff for the traditional athletic competitions, including women’s tennis and volleyball, and women’s and men’s soccer. Local food trucks, student organizations and Falcon fans celebrating under the always popular Hospitality Tent packed the campus. Members of classes ending in 2 and 7 celebrated milestone reunions and all guests shared in the thrilling last President Camille Follow minute victory of the men’s @AlbertusPres soccer team over Rivier Dinner w/alumna, Terry Hudak ’84 University. With 2:19 @terryhudak. So much passion and remaining in regulation, hope for her alma mater. Love Albertus Senior Matt Stoll secured alumni stories! #FearlessFalcons the home win on Senior Night for the Falcons. On Sunday, the College community participated in a lively, music-filled, celebratory mass presided by Reverend Jordan Lenaghan, O.P., and enjoyed brunch in the Dining Hall. Legacy of Social Justice #AlbertusTradition

Norman Siegel, civil rights and civil liberties lawyer, kicked off a week-long celebration of the Power of Words. His Constitution Day topic, “Freedom of the Press: More Important Than Ever,” centered on several landmark decisions that focused on the rights guaranteed in the United States Constitution do extend to all Americans. He pointed out that,

“ …the U.S. Constitution is a radical document: it is about freedom, justice, and equality for all.”

For many years, Siegel served as the executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, on the frontline of some of New York City’s most critical civil rights and liberties struggles. albertus.edu/constitutionday

Our Founders, Our Heritage, Our College. The Power of Words Founders’ Day 2017 launched with President Camille in an early morning radio interview inviting the community to the Albertus campus. Throughout the day, student art work inspired by the Power of Words was on display in the MacDonough Art Gallery, and faculty and student writings were featured in Rosary Hall. The entire campus participated in reading Viktor Frankl’s “Man’s Search for Meaning.” If you haven’t guessed, Writing and the Power of Words was the theme of our 2017 Founders’ Day Celebration.

Sr. Diana Culbertson, O.P., opened the on campus activities with “Remembering the Words.” Her talk was followed by the Candlelight Ceremony, the oldest Albertus tradition, where seniors pass the light of knowledge on to the freshmen.

The day continued with a lively all campus picnic including an exchange of thoughts, ideas, and words through a community book swap.

A powerful panel made up of Albertus students, faculty, staff, and alumni shared reflections during a presentation of “Words Inspire: How Words Changed My Life.”

The day concluded with a very special presentation of the VERITAS Award to revered professor, Dr. Susan Cole, and a reception in Bree Common.

Edgar Omar Diaz ’21, representative for the Class of 2021, received the official class banner from Class of 2017 representative Taylor Boynton at the Candlelight Ceremony during Founders’ Day.

Attendees received copies of the US Constitution during Attorney Siegel’s talk. Members of the Student Justice League conducted voter registration drives during both Constitution Day and Founders’ Day.

Legacy of Science #AlbertusNSFSSTEM

The first five students to receive scholarships under the National Science Foundation S-STEM (Scholarship in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) grant to the College are getting used to their schedule of classes, labs, and lectures. They are enthusiastic and looking forward to making a difference in the world. Read about their ambitions in the quotes at right. In addition to scholarships, the NSF grant supports activities intended to increase the number of graduates who are prepared to enter the workplace or pursue graduate studies in one of the STEM fields. Dr. Patricia Compagnone-Post, professor of biology, is the principal investigator for the grant. Among other STEM-related activities coming up this year are a speakers’ series, a Women in Science program, and a STEM Graduate School Fair, including Simmons College (Nursing and Health Sciences), Quinnipiac University (School of Health Sciences), University of St. Joseph (School of Pharmacy), Sacred Heart University (Health Professions and Nursing Programs), and Yale University Health (Volunteer Office) among others.

“ I hope to become an emergency physician. Shadowing a doctor in the emergency room, I witnessed a death caused by a heart attack.… There were so many people doing all in their power to save that man. Right then, I realized this was the place for me.” — Maria Bernal Portillo ’21, Hill Regional Career High School, New Haven, CT

“ I hope to find a way to apply my interest in chemistry to helping people in the future. Whether I become a toxicologist, chemical engineer, or a pharmacist, I want to be able to make a difference in whatever career path I choose.” — Daniel Halloran ’21, North Haven High School, North Haven CT

“ My passion grew stronger for the sciences once I was able to make and conduct my own experiments…. I was intrigued by the topic of epidemiology because researching disease discovery was very appealing to me; and finding a cure for a disease is a goal I have set.” — Kimberly Keller ’21, Biotechnology, Research and Zoological Studies High School, Bridgeport, CT

“ I have always been fascinated with science; however, I never knew what I was going to learn would spark a profound passion in my life for STEM.… The potential of STEM fields, research, and careers seemed endless to me, and I was genuinely excited to discover more.”

Women Ahead of Their Time In 1927, Marcella O’Grady Boveri arrived at this fledgling college to establish a department of science. She brought with her an amazing background for a woman of her time: in 1885 she was the first woman to graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a concentration in biology; she had received a fellowship for advanced study in comparative zoology and embryology at Bryn Mawr College; and she became a full professor at Vassar College at the age of 30. In 1896 she traveled to Germany, to the University of Wurzburg, where she was the first woman accepted to the science program there. At Wurzburg, she studied with Theodor Boveri, director of the Zoological-Zootomical Institute, and one of the world’s first cancer researchers. She and Boveri married in 1897, and they worked together on the chromosome theory of cancer until his death in 1915. She remained in Germany until 1926, when she returned to the United States for what was meant to be a brief visit. From a chance conversation with a former student, she learned that the new liberal arts college on Prospect Hill—Albertus Magnus College—was looking for a distinguished woman scientist to establish its science department. She accepted the College’s offer on February 17, 1927. Science courses were popular. Under the guidance of Madame Boveri and Dr. Dorothea Rudnick, 14 out of the 38 members of the Class of 1942 majored in science or chemistry. Eight members of the class were among a group of 100 women from across the country considered qualified by the U.S. War Department for work as civilian laboratory assistants at the Fort Monmouth Research Labs in New Jersey. They replaced male engineers and scientists who had volunteered or were drafted into World War II. Over the years, Albertus science graduates have gone on to careers as a pediatric cardiologist, surgeon, biology and chemistry teachers at the high school and college levels, post-doctoral researchers, and in many other fields. Madame Boveri spent 16 years at Albertus, guiding and encouraging Albertus women in science to go on to graduate work. Her legacy is the many women and men who have built their careers in science on the foundation she established here.

“ I am very interested in the S-STEM program and the many opportunities it offers…. Math and science have always been passions of mine. The idea of being able to help others excites me, whether it is through research in new treatment or a career in mathematics.” — Andrew McGovern ’21, East Haven High School, East Haven, CT

In July, President Camille stopped by to welcome 14 Connecticut high school students attending a molecular biology workshop, designed by Dr. Patricia Compagnone-Post, professor of biology and principal investigator for the STEM grant. The workshop, offered at no charge to participants, will be held annually as part of grant-related activities. This year’s workshop students conducted laboratory experiments and computer-based activities to analyze the gene controlling bitter taste.

Legacy of Service #AlbertusCampusMinistry

Since its founding, the Albertus community has continued the legacy of service. Student volunteers have many opportunities to practice civic engagement and social responsibility as they develop community leadership skills. The mission of the College encourages students to contribute to their communities and to become moral leaders in a complex world. Faculty, staff, and alumni also give of their time to the many service organizations in Greater New Haven. In recent years, this commitment has expanded through Alternate Spring Break, Dominican Volunteers USA, Habitat for Humanity, and other programs.

Six members of the Business Club, along with Dr. Clara Munson, spent a week in Jamaica in July, teaching young adults of Riverton, a landfill community just outside Kingston, the fundamentals of starting a business. The Albertus team: front row, l–r: Janet Rios ’19, Elizabeth Falcigno ’17, Dr. Munson, and Laurel Flanagan ’18. Back row: Max Pelloth ’17, Zach Monti ’20, and Justin-Michael Tharau ’17. An Albertus group will be returning to Kingston next July to do two projects: one with the youth of Riverton on Starting Your Business and a lecture series for the adults of St. Theresa parish, also on Starting Your Business.

Fanjeaux

Habitat for Humanity

Each year, groups of faculty, administrators, and students from U.S. Dominican colleges and universities gather in Fanjeaux, France, to learn and apply the Dominican charism to their work and studies back home. Dr. Christine Atkins, associate professor, director of the Honors Program, and coordinator of foreign languages, and Christine Puglisi ’19, a rising junior biology and chemistry major, represented the College at the Summer Study Program this year. St. Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, lived in Fanjeaux centuries ago. Participants shared similarities and differences, mostly similarities, about their institutions, had group discussions, and stimulating conversations. They learned about the early history of the Dominican Order, not out of books, but by walking the same paths St. Dominic walked, looked over the Seignadou, the same hill from which Dominic viewed the valley.

Spring Break destinations are usually warm and sunny. Not so in Logan, Ohio, where weather called for layers of warm clothing and hoodies. Seven Albertus students, members of the Service Club, spent an Alternate Spring Break helping to build a Habitat for Humanity house. It took a long, eight-hour drive in an Albertus van driven by Wiley Dawson, internship coordinator in Career Services, to get there, but the week’s experience was well worth it, according to the student-workers. Students who participated in the project are Nicole Brown ’17, Sasha Byrd ’20, Taylor Chamberlain ’17, Jake Curello ’17, Laurel Flanagan ’18, Nadja Malvares ’17, and Theresa Towne ’17.

Feathered friends often need help; fortunately, there are volunteers ready to be their protectors. Dr. Hilda Speicher, professor of psychology and coordinator of the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, is a volunteer for the local Audubon Society. She worked with other volunteers to build an osprey platform. For two years, there were no chicks. This year is the first time there are chicks. All reports noted that the chicks were very big, healthy looking, and have fledged.

Dominican Volunteers USA

Preaching in Action Conference

After graduating in 2016, Emili Dubar spent a year in Chicago with the Dominican Volunteers USA. It is an organization that places young men and women all over the country to serve disadvantaged communities. “I lived out the Dominican Pillars of community, prayer, study, and service throughout my year, and because of this, I felt a sense of support that I’m not sure I would have gotten from other services,” she said. Service, or Ministry, was a major part of her year. She worked at Visitation Catholic School on the South Side of Chicago, where she was an assistant teacher to a class of 27 students. “Being a Dominican Volunteer was one of the most exhausting, stressful, and sometimes frustrating things I have ever done.… I cannot wait to go back some day to see the students I taught graduate from the eighth grade. It was truly a life-changing experience.”

Alicia Dealmeida ’20, Jason Howell ’20, and Korina Zelaya ’20 attended the Preaching in Action Conference with Sr. Joan Scanlon, O.P., coordinator of campus ministry. Held this year at Molloy College in Rockville Centre, New York, it brings together students from Dominican colleges and universities in the United States to learn more about the charism of preaching and how that charism can be incorporated into their own lives, then passed on to others. Students have the opportunity to experience themselves as preachers, using art, dance, drama, and music. Individual reflection is shared with others in small groups. Mentors from all the colleges also participate in the entire conference. Each group commits to President Camille Follow bring the experience back @AlbertusPres to their college. “This Albertus Magnus men’s basketball gear experience will have a on its way to @CoachSampsonUH. Our major impact on my life,” thoughts and prayers are with everyone said Jason Howell. in the Houston area. 4:50 PM - 8 Sep 2017
