During the Fall 2011 semester, an architecture design studio at Auburn University's SAPLA explored ideas begun at the Alabama Design Summit. Led by Prof. Sheri Schumacher and in partnership with Steve Cox of International Expeditions, both Summit participants, Third Year architecture students investigated innovative and sustainable design initiatives and activities. The projects aim to improve the social, economic and cultural conditions of the underserved Gee’s Bend, Alabama community. The design proposals aim to communicate the compelling cultural and social history of the community for future educational travel groups visiting Gee’s Bend, encourage economic development and increase the benefits of local assets in Gee’s Bend, Alabama.
