It is with the saddest of hearts that the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) advise that Life Member and Fellow of the Institute, Ian Fletcher was tragically killed in a car accident on Phillip Island on Christmas Day.

Ian dedicated 48 years to the AIP and was instrumental in the Southern Region for decades. Ian was a Past President, the AIP Treasurer, Southern Regional Director, AIP Board Member and more. He was recognised over the decades with a number of Distinguished Service Awards, a Fellowship and Life Membership.

Even in retirement Fletch still wanted to help the AIP so he was nominated our ‘time-keeper’ at many of our packaging conferences. Ian was given a bell and for all those that attended our conferences you would recall you did not mess with his time-keeping!

Whilst the bell may have stopped ringing Ian’s contribution to the AIP will not be forgotten.

The AIP would like to send our deepest condolences to his wife Roz, his children and grandchildren at this time.

Ian was looking forward to celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the AIP in 2023 so we will make sure he is remembered and celebrated with many of our Members in September.

So very sad to hear about the tragic passing of Ian, a member of the AIP since August 1975, also a fellow and life member whom was instrumental in the Victorian branches success since he joined.

Ian never shied away from a debate and was passionate about packaging and its place in the world.

When I become the AIP President, Ian was one of the first to contact me and passed on lots of historical records about the AIP through the 80’s and 90’s. He will be missed.

Sincere condolences to Ros and the family. Ian was a definitely a 'people person' always looking to help others. His wit and repartee will be sadly missed by his many friends. At our next catch up dinner we will all raise a glass of vintage red to honour our mate.

Vale, Ian. A truly wonderful, generous man. Being in Ian’s presence was always one of life’s great joys.

Our deepest sympathies to Ros, Marianne, Mark and family at this time of great loss.

‘Fletch’ we knew one another for so many years and you will be sorely missed by all.

What a wonderful man, now sadly gone. My friend for 38 years. Sincere condolences to Ros and family. Ian was a giving person, always the first to volunteer. Through AIP years, his role at VHRR Phillip Island and more recently with the Mission to Seamen he was always present with a big smile and willingness to help. I will miss our chats at Mostly Mozart and over a red wine at Pino’s.

On behalf of everyone at the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) we are all sending our deepest condolences to Ian’s family at this time. He was an exemplary volunteer, dedicated to the AIP and to helping ensure that the Institute grew to become the peak professional body for packaging education and training that it is today. Ian will be missed by many AIP Members across the country.

Vale Ian. A person who became a very good and supportive friend over the years. Always willing to help others and passionate about the Industry he cherished. The DK dinners became legendary, as packaging mates shared the table with banter and more than a few laughs. You will be sadly missed Ian… you made a difference, which will be your legacy.

Rest in Peace Fletch. We met in the early 1980s and almost immediately became firm friends. Ian showed me the ropes of the packaging industry of which he was equally knowledgeable and passionate. We were work colleagues for a time and I am forever grateful for his guidance and enthusiasm in a very challenging growth business.

Ian was essentially the glue that kept a group of friends in regular contact. The DK dinners will remain a huge part of his legacy as we 'solved the world’s problems' over a shared glass of excellent red. He lived an extremely full and valuable life and will be missed by many. Sincere condolences to Ros and the family.

Ian became our friend and my mentor 20 years ago through AIP and we have reta ined that easy friendship until now. Ian had a great love for his family and was very highly respected in his large circle of friends and colleagues. His dedication to the Seafarer’s Mission and also the AIP were without question. His quick wit and sense of humor endeared my wife, Mary and I, to Ian and his friendship will be cherished and not forgotten.

Our love and sincere condolences to Ros and all of Ian’s family.

About the role

About the position

As a Packaging Scientist for Yates, you will manage the technology that falls into the home garden plant health, plant protection and ‘other’ categories, ensuring that Yates delivers product innovation. The AIP Australasian Packaging Conference will be held in person in on the 28th and 29th March 2023. This will be the first time since the pandemic that the AIP has been able to run this important industry event in real life. 2023 is also a very special year for the AIP in that the Institute will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary.

The 2023 AIP Australasian Packaging Conference will be held at the Crown Promenade, Melbourne on the 28th & 29th of March and will be designed to deliver a two-day educational program that will cover a broad range of topics relating to the theme 2025 & BEYOND.

The conference will look at how the various industries are heading towards the 2025 National Packaging Targets and will cover topics such as refusal, reduction, reuse, recycle and circularity. The speakers will also look at what is beyond 2025 and what the industry needs to do to design out waste, eliminate problematic materials, reduce single use plastic and ensure that we are capable of collecting, sorting, recovering and recycling all the materials and packaging formats in Australia and New Zealand.

SME ARL program and ARL Marketplace update

As you may already be aware the AIP is a part of the SME ARL Program which is a new initiative to help more SMEs adopt the ARL on their packaging. The campaign is funded by the Australian Government and being delivered in partnership with the Australian Institute of Packaging, the Australian Food and Grocery Council, the National Retail Association and APCO.

The ARL Marketplace currently features a range of free educational tools, videos, factsheets, animations, and other resources including learning modules developed by the AIP. These tools provide SMEs with all the information they need to build more sustainable practices in their business. We would encourage you to register on the portal to be able to access the available resources and also share these details with your own customers.

The opportunity for packaging manufacturers

The ARL Marketplace will be a new way for packaging manufacturers to: Reach more SME customers and provide a new value-add for you existing SME customer base. Be recognised in campaign marketing and communications as an accredited supplier of packaging that's ready to label with Australia's most robust recyclability labelling program, the ARL.

Simplify the PREP assessment experience with new streamlined product groupings.

ARL Marketplace vendor program to be launched in 2023

In addition to what is already available on the marketplace a new packaging platform will be launched in May to help bring SME’s and suppliers together. The purpose of the vendor program is to provide a simple sourcing solution that connects small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with packaging formats that are ready to label with the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL). The packaging made available on the platform will be listed from a community of accredited packaging vendors.

February 2023: Throughout February, a pilot project will be conducted with a sample of representative manufacturers and labellers to test the platform technology and user experience for vendors and SMEs.

• April 2023: Applications will open to all Australian packaging manufacturers and labellers to start the vendor accreditation process. More in-depth information about the accreditation process will be available in early 2023.

• May 2023: Sourcing functionality goes live.

Expression of interest for the ARL Marketplace vendor program

The SME ARL Program is inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) from Australian packaging manufacturers distributors, wholesalers and labellers to become accredited vendors on the ARL Marketplace.

Invitations to become an accredited vendor will open in April 2023.

Businesses are invited to register their interest now to receive updates about the ARL Marketplace development process and a reminder when applications are open.

WPO Webinar: Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Programs from across the globe

WHEN: 14 March 2023

WHAT: Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging is gaining global attention and adoption. This brings to the forefront the need to harmonise EPR across diverse regions, especially given the global interconnectedness of the economy and consumer packaged goods markets. There are many different approaches to the strategy, and many go beyond providing for end-of-life services to promote responsible product design, infrastructure improvements and market development. Effective EPR is often seen as a necessary piece of the puzzle in addressing the current recycling challenges and concern over single-use packaging waste. EPR schemes aim to encourage producers to change design at the start to ensure that the materials and packaging are truly recyclable and recovered at end of life.

The intergovernmental Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) definition of Extended Producer Responsibility identifies two specific features: the shifting of responsibility for disposal ‘upstream’ from municipalities to producers and encouragement through incentives to make the design of products more environmentally friendly.

This webinar will seek to better understand what EPR really looks like in Europe, Germany, India and The United Kingdom including the revised EU Packaging & Packaging Waste (PPW) Directive, EPR legislations, eco modulation and other product stewardship programs that are working successfully. EPR programs differ around the world and this webinar will help to show you how various countries and regions are working towards lowering environmental impacts of their materials and packaging and ensuring that we have packaging that is circular by design. By attending this session you will be able to find out more about what is working and steps towards a more harmonised approach to EPR globally. The panellists will also share tips to improve EPR programs and discuss the barriers and challenges that they have experienced establishing an EPR program in their region.

Australian Traceability Shines at WORLDSTAR Awards for 2023

On January 9th, 2023 – WPO (World Packaging Organisation) announced the winners of the WorldStar 2023 Awards, and Result Group is a proud winner in the category of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables with its Australian Table Grapes Traceability Pilot..

WPO (World Packaging Organisation) is a unique organisation contributing the growth of a sustainable global packaging.

In another record year, the Awards registered 488 entries, from 41 countries, growing from 440 competitors from 37 countries in 2022. “These numbers confirm that WorldStar is the most prestigious and important packaging award in the globe”, celebrates Soha Atallah, WorldStar Coordinator and WPO Vice President of Events.

Packages eligible for WorldStar Awards are those that have already received a national or regional packaging award from a packaging competition that is recognised by WPO , during the last 2 years.

In 2022 Result Group was awarded Silver in 'Outside of the Box Design' with the Australian Table Grape Association (ATGA) traceability pilot for the 2022 (AIP) Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards .

The Australian Table Grapes Traceability Pilot is one of the largest traceability and authentication projects deployed in Australia. The outstanding achievements are the result of collaboration between Australian Table Grape Association, Agriculture Victoria, Perfection Fresh Australia, GS1 Australia, and Result Group . More than 840,000 units of table grapes, including bunch bags,

clamshells, and cartons, were labelled with a unique serialised QR code, further enhanced with the use of GS1 Digital Link standards and exported to over 15 markets in the Asia Pacific Region.

“Agriculture Victoria is delighted to have been part of this award-winning pilot program by funding and partnering with the Australian Table Grape Association to pilot the use of Results Group traceability software with growers and exporters in the sector. We are committed to working with industry to implement new traceability systems that maintain Australia’s competitiveness in international markets and ensure the safety and trustworthiness of produce delivered to overseas consumers. It’s a fantastic outcome to receive this industry recognition and I congratulate everyone who has been involved in this pilot program,” stated Agriculture Victoria Chief Executive, Matt Lowe.

To assist grape growers to connect with consumers and supply chains as well as consumer safety and quality standards, Result Group introduced an industry customised traceability platform, a label printing and management programme, NiceLabel, as well as process automation and scanning technologies, designed to collect end-to-end shipping data. The overall concept was to sell more Australia table grapes by proving authenticity and provenance. Setting high-quality Australian produce in a space of its own... all done with virtually no disruption to current grape harvest and packing processes.

Australian Traceability Shines at WORLDSTAR Awards for 2023

Traceability is often viewed as an 'evolving' technology, the recognition of an Australian company developing Australia’s export credentials 'challenges' that theory. The technology exists, has been deployed and it can be done cost effectively, delivering a strong return on investment.

We are really proud of the pilot and thank the Victorian Government for their support of the project. Thanks also to technology provider Result Group and producer-exporter Perfection Fresh for agreeing to participate in the pilot. To win a world award is an exciting achievement for the Australian Table Grape Association. There was a lot of thought and strategy that went into our traceability pilot to make sure it would be a success.”

The process of the traceability project starts at the farm, where the polybags that will be exported to over 15 markets in the Asia Pacific Region are given unique serialised GS1 Digital Link - enabled QR code labels. Labels also provide crucial traceability information about consumer pack units, cases, and pallet numbers, as well as time and temperature tracking information that was captured through the cloud database, in order to combat all types of food fraud.

The digital twin integrated in the QR code labels ensures that each one is unique and traceable.

Officer, Perfection Fresh commented, award recognises the strong collaboration between a

team of experienced and skilled stakeholders working together to overcome challenges and achieve a result, Perfection Fresh was proud to be part of this pilot project. Packaging is the most important touchpoint for customer and consumer communication. This technology gave us, as a brand owner, the opportunity to ensure product safety and quality across the supply chain as well as obtain direct feedback from users on our product experience.”

Opal, JBS Australia win WorldStar award

Acollaboration between renewable packaging and paper business Opal and Australia’s largest animal protein processor JBS Australia has seen the pair recognised with a 2023 Worldstar global packaging award.

Opal devised an innovative corrugated cardboard dunnage solution to minimise product movement during transportation that can costly in damage and food waste.

JBS Australia group manager sustainability Sam Churchill said the solution lined up with the company’s sustainability commitment, which included working with customers and supply chain partners to increase the recycled content and recyclability of its packaging, as well as reducing the amount of packaging material used and waste within its operations.

“This innovative product has resulted in tangible cost savings and operational efficiencies. By reducing our packaging footprint, we are meeting our sustainability objectives for the benefit of our business and customers, and providing positive environmental outcomes,” Churchill said.

Opal said dunnage is usually constructed from expanded polystyrene (EPS), which can’t be easily recycled and ends up in landfill. Its dunnage solution is a column-like corrugated structure, offering a sustainable, 100 per cent recyclable cardboard alternative to non-recyclable EPS,

supporting the phase out of problematic and unnecessary single-use plastic packaging under Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Targets.

The dunnage also provides enhanced transportation and distribution efficiency for JBS Australia as it accommodates 1800 boxes per pallet compared to traditional EPS dunnage, which enables only 200 boxes packed per pallet.

Opal Fibre Packaging group general manager Brad Hinds said Opal was committed to providing its customers with sustainable, innovative solutions.

“We are delighted to be recognised on a global scale through the WorldStar global packaging award in the transit category. By collaborating with our customers, we can design and produce products that can deliver on functionality, supply chain efficiency, and sustainability,” Hinds said.

The dunnage was previously awarded Gold in both the Sustainable Packaging Design of the Year Industrial sub-category and Outside of the Box Design of the Year at the Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards in 2022.

UltraGuard™ Solutions for improved barrier properties in polyethylene

UltraGuard™ Solutions by Milliken is a line of performance additives that brings value to polyethylene parts by improving barrier properties. It can be used in films, and in injection molded, compression molded, and blow molded parts.

These additives cut by up to 50% the transmission rate of any substance (such as moisture or oxygen) that passes through the polyethylene bottle.

White opaque HDPE bottles are commonly used for OTC (over-the-counter) drugs, prescription drugs and nutraceutical products because they have good moisture barrier and light protection properties. Barrier enhancement in HDPE pharma bottles is particularly valuable because it can help to extend the potency of drugs toward the end of their shelf life.

As an added benefit, UltraGuard Solutions also provide sustainability benefits. To meet the barrier requirements, pharma bottles typically have much thicker walls than needed from a purely functional point of view. PE resin formulated with these additives enables bottle makers to reduce the weight of these bottles by up to 20% while still providing enhanced barrier properties. These lighter-weight bottles, therefore, use significantly less material and lessen their overall impact on the environment.

Sustainable Design Training course

The AIP also ran a well-attended training course on Sustainable Packaging design principles and how all sized businesses can embed them into their design processes. 1. Why did you join the AIP? What benefits do you believe the AIP offers all their members?

L eigh: Bec oming a member of the AIP was important to me, firstly to connect with a community that is heavily invested in the future of the packaging industry, and as an extension to this, learn from this networks knowledge and experiences. This Institute ensures that it's members are well informed on industry developments via various communications, newsletters, webinars, seminars, trade and networking events.

2. How long ha ve you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise?

Leigh: I have been a part of the print industry since I was 17 years old, starting as a Graphic Designer and since working in various roles including Print Sales, Paper Sales, Digital Media Manager, General Manager of Sign, Display and Digital and most recently General Manager of Labels & Packaging.

I hav e been very fortunate to work within the Ball & Doggett Group over the past 14 years (previously Focus Paper and BJ Ball Group). Ball & Doggett is owned by the Ovol Group, who specialise in global distribution of print and consumable materials. Given this e xposure to various areas of print over the years, I have a diverse skillset and extensive knowledge of the industry.

3. Wha t is your current job role and what are your responsibilities?

Leigh: My cur rent role is General Manager of Labels & Packaging within the Ball & Doggett Group. My core responsibilty is to oversee the strategic direction of various categories within the Labels & Packaging division, which include Cartonboard Packaging, Flexible Packaging, Food Service & Industrial Packaging, Plastic Packaging and Self-Adhesive Roll Label.

Supporting each of these ca tegories with supply chain management, inventory management, product development, sales strategies, key account management, marketing and M&A strategies all form a part of my responsibilities within this role.

2022 AIP Career & Salary Report now available

For the second consecutive year the AIP has released the key findings from the 2022 Career & Salary Survey for the Food & Beverage industries.

According to AIP Executive Director, Nerida Kelton MAIP, the AIP 2022 Career & Salary Survey report was developed in partnership with the IoPP, to provide a more detailed breakdown of the people who make up the industry including their roles, education, experience, career satisfaction, concerns and salaries. The survey covers Australia and New Zealand and also all roles within the industries. The Australia and New Zealand report aligns with the same offering developed by the IoPP for the rest of the world.

“The 2022 Career & Salary report has some interesting findings and certainly highlights one of the key challenges that the industry has right now which is upskilling industry professionals in the science and technical side of all materials and pack formats.” Mrs Kelton said.

AIP Education Director, Prof. Pierre Pienaar FAIP, CPP added that "the Career & Salary Report provides a summary of salary levels for packaging, but also gives a general indication of how well qualified those that are currently working in the packaging industry are. The data also indicates that although well qualified, i.e.,

Attaining these qualifications will go a long way in improving the overall knowledge and skillset in the industry, and to ensure that a technical knowledge void is filled with suitably qualified people. We need more packaging knowledge professionals and education helps us get exposure to new ideas and concepts that we can use to appreciate and improve the world around us, and the world within us.” Prof. Pienaar said.

• 46% of the total respondents work in Food followed by 13% in the Beverage industry.

• 11% indicated that they work in packaging materials.

Job Function

• 30% of the total respondents indicated that they work in Packaging Technology/Design.

• This was followed by Marketing/Sales at 15.90% and 11.20% in Research & Development.

• 38% of the total respondents are very secure with their job, while 33% are ‘somewhat secure’.

Global Packaging Design for Recycling Guide now available in Arabic, Spanish, and Czech.

The World Packaging Organisation (WPO) is pleased to advice that Global Packaging Design for Recycling Guide has been translated in to three additional languages to help even more packaging technologists to design out waste at the start.

According to Nerida Kelton, Vice President Sustainability & Save Food, from the WPO, "In order to be able to apply recyclable packaging design, a certain fundamental knowledge of sorting and recycling processes is necessary. Packaging must, therefore, be suitable for state-ofthe-art sorting and recycling processes in addition to its basic functions (e.g., storage, transport, product protection, product presentation and convenience).”

" The global Packaging Design for Recycling Guide is a starting point to understand Best Practice examples using state-of-the-art technology that can then be applied and tailored to suit the recovery and recyclability capabilities and infrastructure on a regional and local level. The latest translations of Arabic, Spanish and Czech have been developed in collaboration with country based WPO Members who are passionate about helping to educate their members about circular packaging design,” she said.

WPO Board Member Ayman Sbeih, who is also the Chairman of the Palestinian Federation of Paper & Packaging Industries (PFPPI) was the lead coordinator in the Arabic translation.

"Translating the Global Packaging Design for Recycling Guide into Arabic was extremely important to ensure that we take steady steps based on scientific foundations towards achieving a circular economy that contributes to addressing challenges that face the world in terms of climate change, the environment and the preservation of natural resources,” Mr Sbeih said.

“The Arab designer generally has a great deal of ability and talent to develop modern designs compatible with the present requirements in terms of promotional aspects of different products as well as practical and environmental aspects.”

“This global design guide will help designers in Arab countries to better understand design rules for packaging materials in order to recycle them and reduce their impact on the environment, and also reducing the use of non-renewable natural resources in the manufacture of these materials, which contributes to alleviating the burdens on these resources and integrating the economies of Arab countries into the concept of circular economy and its applications,” he said.

The Spanish translation was coordinated by WPO Board Members Silvio Colombo from the Argentine Packaging Institute (IAE) and Mariana Soto Urzúa, the Packaging Centre of Chile (CENEM).

“The Spanish guide, together with a wide range of initiatives that IAE and CENEM already undertake will undoubtedly contribute to stimulating discussion, awareness and education in the circular economy, the environment and sustainability,” Mr Colombo said.

“We aim to circulate this guide across the entire region to embed best practice sustainable and circular design principles in all businesses,” he said.

The Czech translation was coordinated by WPO Board Member Iva Werbynska, Managing Director, Syba in partnership with Tomas Martoch, Senior Manager, ECR Community.

According to Iva Werbynska, Syba "A number of environmental laws have come into force in Europe in recent years with the transition to the circular economy. The main priority is prevention and longterm care of the entire supply chain."

“The legislation deals with the production of consumer goods, reuse, recycling, reparability and recoverability and this requires better product design and sustainable packaging. This is where the Global Packaging Design for Recycling Guide comes into play.”

“As we need to keep the material in circulation for as long as possible the guide will help packaging designers to change their thinking, provide a new approach to packaging and help to steer planning in the right direction. Right now packaging technology is at the beginning of a new era," she said.

The new translations are in addition to English, German, Georgian and Hungarian and are all available for free to download on the WPO website.

Packaging and food waste balance needed to achieve targets

Balanced discussions and efficient actions, with a focus on packaging design, are what’s needed to achieve the country’s waste and packaging targets. This was the key takeaway at the recent State of Play in Australia for Food Loss & Waste webinar. Jan Arreza reports.

CONDUCTED BY NERIDA KELTON , executive director of the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP); Mark Barthel, CEO of Stop Food Waste Australia; and Sam Oakden, voluntary agreement manager of Stop Food Waste Australia, the webinar explored the key challenges involved reducing food waste in Australia, and where the opportunities lie.

In addition to covering the 2025 National Packaging Targets, the webinar also highlighted the 2030 National Food Waste Strategy, the roadmap to meet these targets, how industry can get involved in the Australian Food Pact, the Fight Food Waste CRC, and Stop Food Waste Australia.

“The challenge is that the industry tends to just focus all of the

discussion on the 2025 National Packaging Targets, and that’s an imbalanced focus, as we need to really take into account the 2030 Food Waste Targets too,” Nerida Kelton said.

“We need to make sure that when a brand is talking about sustainable packaging design, that they are looking at both targets, and I recommend everyone considers both the 2030 Food Waste Targets and the 2025 National Packaging Targets equally in your design discussions. We need a holistic systems approach to sustainability as well a evidencebased decisions”

Barthel, who gave an overview of food loss and waste, both globally and in Australia, and also highlighted some of the things

that can help the country deliver on its 2030 Food Waste Targets, agreed with Kelton’s sentiment.

“Food waste is a monumental challenge that affects everyone in the food value chain, and we all need to act now to deliver Australia’s target to halve food waste by 2030, and it will take unprecedented action by governments, industry, investors and the community to achieve this goal,” Mark Barthel said.

“In terms of packaging, we’ve seen in our case studies from other countries’ best practice in this space, that when date labelling is done right and you get

consistent information to consumers, they respond really well, and ultimately it helps them to reduce food waste.

“New processing technologies extend shelf life, including everything we’ve seen in packaging innovation such as modified atmospheres, diagnostics packaging, active and intelligent packaging –they all massively help in this space.”

In terms of the AIP itself, Kelton announced during the webinar that the Association is now a supporting signatory to the Australian Food Pact, along with already being a core participant of the Fight Food Waste CRC, and a founding partner of Stop Food Waste Australia.

“With the Australian Food Pact, we work with our signatories in four key areas: to embed new criteria into design, buying and sourcing; optimise whole supply chain to produce more with less; find innovative ways to make the best use of waste and surplus food; and influence consumer and business behaviours and reduce food waste,” Sam Oakden said.

And providing a sneak peak of what’s coming in 2023, Kelton also announced the Association’s

Tool (DIRECT) is a cloud-based software tool that was initially developed by the RMIT University, and with support from the Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre (CRC).

The Australian Food Pact

The Australian Food Pact is a voluntary agreement that follows a proven international way of reducing food waste, focusing on prevention, reuse (donation), and food chain transformation and innovation.

It is a powerful partnership of organisations who operate along the farm-to-fork food supply chain and represents a major step towards the country reaching its food waste reduction goal of 50% going to landfill by 2030.

• Target 1: Making the most of every scrap – by donating any surplus food or transforming it to create new business or societal value.

• Target 2: Designing and sourcing more sustainable products in the first place, with waste prevention in mind.

To further assist with this ambition, Kelton also highlighted another new solution business can implement to help fight food waste –a new software tool that promises to save food businesses millions of dollars by helping to identify and track the true cost of food loss and waste.
