FlashPoint IP is an IP and high-level consultancy practice, specializing in strategically aligning the clients’ IP to their business model. We invited Founder Dr. Reuven K. Mouallem to profile his unique firm, which has just been recognised as ‘Best IP Firm 2016 – Israel & Recognised Leader in Patent Portfolio Management – Israel’. Please tell me about your firm, the work you do, and the types of clients with whom you work. FlashPoint IP focuses primarily on patent drafting and prosecution, and firmly considers that the ultimate goal of securing strong IP is to help build and grow the client’s venture – translating the ideas into business opportunities through effective IP strategy and management. Strategic portfolio management and counseling international clients is an integral part of the practice in a diverse array of technical fields. With a foundational expertise in US IP law, I have further gained significant knowledge about the EPC and the diversity of laws and practice among the European national systems during my LL.M. studies in Strasbourg. My knowledge of the European legal system, and how it differs from the United States, allows us to effectively counsel both European and U.S. clients with global interests in intellectual property – spanning drafting, prosecution, due diligence, legal opinions, valuations, IP analytics, IP risk assessment, and competitive intelligence. As an expert in the field, I have had the honour to lecture and lead panel forums on behalf of the EPO and WIPO. Our clients span the gamut from individual inventors, startups, and SMEs to research institutes, universities, and large multinational corporations. Within your industry, what are the major challenges/opportunities you find, and what trends are you seeing with regards to intellectual property? With economic recovery sputtering in many parts of the world, the knee-jerk reaction is to tighten the reins on discretionary expenditures. However, to avoid core competencies being mistakenly eroded, the prioritization of business, technology, and legal issues needs to be executed by intimately aligning IP strategy and management with business strategy. A strong IP culture is often lacking in many businesses, with in-house counsel not equipped or adequately-staffed to deal with the complexity of IP issues that can arise. Effective cost containment for large portfolio clients, while preserving strategic IP goals and targets remains a challenge. Opportunities exist for value-added services in proactively developing and managing complex patent strategies for budding ventures in an efficient manner as outside counsel. What is your overall mission, and what steps do you take to achieve the best possible quality of service for your clients?
