Activating Youth Leadership

Activating Youth Leadership in Mauritius - it is with this vision 12 months ago, we started on the path to challenge and develop young people in the country. When living in a world that is hugely shaped by the Generation Y of young people, who are represented by characteristics of being passionate, globe trotters and staying constantly on top of innovation, information and technology, it is very important for thriving companies and countries alike, to truly identify and cater to the growth needs of these future leaders . This is the generation of people whose energies when channelized in the right way can create a better future for our world. The global features of Generation Y are as well applicable to the young people in Mauritius-that is why AIESEC has the goal to empower them to be in demand in today’s highly competitive world and at the same time, drive positive change in their communities. The development of these young people play a major role in the success of Mauritius tomorrow.

Having been founded only 3 years ago in the country, but with an experience of empowering leadership across the world for over 60 years, AIESEC in Mauritius has been able to activate young people across 5 institutions of higher education. Today our membership counts over 220 students, present on campuses of UoM, UTM, MITD, CTI and the Middlesex University. This year we grew by over 200 % in membership and over 360 % in the realization of international internships, both incoming and outgoing. AIESEC has so far provided over 80 Mauritian students, access to the international internship program who went to Italy, Bahrain, Malaysia, Poland, India and other countries. Making this growth happen, from 66 to over 300 international opportunities for young Mauritians and internationals in such a short time, is an amazing result for our organization, which clearly shows that the youth of the country is highly ambitious. Young talented people are the main asset for any business or institution. Their immense capacity has no limits and outperforms any expectations. Being a fast growing country, Mauritius supports the development of youth recognizing it is the main resource to the success of the country. The power of youth is amazing and can generate tremendous results and ensure a culture of achievement, excellence and innovation in our societies. Harnessing youth innovation, creating opportunities for them and being a truly impactful platform which opens a world of choice, is the story of AIESEC in Mauritius and globally. 2010-2011 was the year of bringing the world to Mauritius and positioning this highly potential country as a land of opportunities within the AIESEC network of 110 countries. I am very excited about what the future holds for AIESEC in Mauritius and truly believe that it can be one of the topmost countries in our global network with the support of the corporates and the government here.

Thank you Yuliya Dmyterko President 2010-2011 AIESEC in Mauritius

Mauritius 10-11

The year of the growth of AIESEC in Mauritius has its own ambition to activate Youth Leadership across Mauritius! The year started with over 50 members who were part of AIESEC in University of Mauritius. As being the largest Youth Leadership organization that creates a platform for youth to discover and develop their leadership potential. Today AIESEC in Mauritius is spread across 5 campuses across Mauritius! AIESEC International Internship Program and membership nowadays is accessible to the students of UoM, UTM, MITD, Middlesex and CTI institutions. Today AIESEC in Mauritius is creating international internship opportunities for various stakeholders: companies, NGOs, institutions, students. Already over 80 Mauritian young people went abroad with AIESEC on various professional internships in Poland, Malaysia, Kenya, Italy, Bahrain, India, China and more. Moreover the organization this year has witnessed incredible growth in the global ranking of AIESEC within 110 countries. Mauritius for today occupies 38 places among the 110 countries growing by 28 positions in only one year! It is due to the immense growth in membership and the will of young people to grow by exploring the opportunities which AIESEC provides.

Performance report

Membership is the main asset of our organization, it was a big priority in the year 2010-2011 to increase the local membership and make AIESEC more accessible on various university campuses. Today, AIESEC is present besides UoM in UTM and MITD and even has its first few members from CTI and the Middlesex University. AIESEC members are involved in the international internship program and social impact projects on various relevant issues in Mauritius, taking on leadership roles to learn in practice team management-all of this with the main goal to develop themselves as change agents. The membership is between 20-24 years in age and their academic backgrounds range between economics, management, engineering and social studies.

In the year of 2010-2011, AIESEC in Mauritius facilitated over 300 international internships for Mauritian students and international students who did their management, development and technical internship in Mauritius, in the corporate, NGO and community development sectors. Absolute growth of internships is due to the fact that, this year it was a priority to keep the increased membership involved in the internship program to facilitate and create opportunities for NGOs and companies to take top young talent from abroad, to work on various projects. This year companies like HSBC, Rogers, Technology10 and RT Knits experienced international AIESEC talent in their work environments.

12 Annual Report 2010-2011 Breakthrough in Activating Leadership

Mauritius 10-11 AIESEC provides a variety of leadership roles to its members on local and national levels. This year we have experienced an absolute increase of 32 leadership roles which were offered to members of AIESEC in Mauritius to prove themselves in - managing project teams, leading functional departments to facilitate the incoming and outgoing internship program and, managing events and conferences. A leadership role in AIESEC is defined as an opportunity to manage a team of minimum 3 people for a minimum of 2 months. It is a unique opportunity for young people to learn strategic management, setting and achievement of goals and reporting, and in the process develop leadership competencies that will bring value to their future.

AIESEC in University of Mauritius The first and biggest Local Committee of AIESEC in Mauritius, AIESEC UoM has 125 members and realizes the most number of exchanges in the country. Despite being in the organization for only 8 months, I applied for the role of Local Committee President faithfully believing it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience awaiting me and I was right. Like Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step”. I took this step and it is definitely one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. AIESEC University of Mauritius did not have the best possible start, but as we moved through the year, we capitalized on different opportunities, growing rapidly. We had only 17 members when the year 10-11 started. Since then, we’ve had an almost 300% growth in Exchange and 500% growth in membership. This experience was so fulfilling mainly, because I had the amazing opportunity to work with a lot of remarkable persons who unquestionably inspired me with their will to impact society. We aspired to greatness and in the face of setbacks, showed the indomitable will to move forward and finish strong, in the process setting legendary benchmarks in AIESEC University of Mauritius. These past 12 months have been a voyage of discovery -a 365 days trip that altered the very course of my life. Sean Fourmacou President 2010-2011 Local Committee AIESEC in University of Mauritius

Local Committees

AIESEC in University of Technology Mauritius. AIESEC opened its doors to the students of the University of Technology Mauritius in September 2010 with the establishment of a local chapter on the campus. For the high potential students of the university, AIESEC meant a lot of opportunities. The first and biggest ever project of AIESEC in Mauritius was realized by the Local Committee of AIESEC in UTM. The project ‘LEAD Green’ with the focus on sustainable development was organized by Mauritian members who are students at UTM and in the framework of the project, they brought to Mauritius, 20 international university students from over 12 different countries like Brazil, Guatemala, Germany and Egypt to name a few. The 20 Internationals and 20 Mauritians together, took the first steps as youth to raise awareness on the issue of sustainable development in the country. So far, we have also sent abroad for international development internships, 10 local students to India, China and Malaysia. Nowadays the students are creating more reciprocal opportunities to bring the world to Mauritius. Taking the challenge of leading AIESEC in UTM has been one of the most incredible experiences of my life. It has helped me to understand my place in this world, create an international network of peers, and organize the local membership around one idea of developing themselves and other young people as agents of positive change in Mauritius. Andy Yu President 2010-2012 Local Committee AIESEC in University of Technology Mauritius

AIESEC in Mauritius Institute of Training and Development AIESEC in MITD realized the recruitment of its first members in September 2010, who would be the pioneers in implementing the AIESEC Experience in the Institute, offering more young people the opportunity to access the global network of AIESEC, through projects and internships. It has been a totally new experience working with international students in the ‘Teach Mauritius’ Project wherein we have been together delivering soft skills training to students of MITD. I could never imagine seeing such dramatic change within young people, when exposed to dynamic learning environments such as that within this project. We are very happy to have started AIESEC in MITD, bringing thousands of students, the world of opportunities that AIESEC is! Sidick Unuth Expansion Initiative Responsible 2010-2012

Outgoing Exchanges

AIESEC as a global organization runs a lot of programs which facilitate leadership development, connecting youth to the corporate, development and education sectors of the society in turn giving them the needed exposure and experience. As a result, one of the key programs is the Global Internship program which offers youth across the globe an opportunity to go on an international internship, which is one of the most intense experience AIESEC offers and links together our global network. Every country as an entity of the global network sends and receive students for international internships. The program is divided into Incoming Exchange Program and Outgoing Exchange Program.

Outgoing Exchange Program Under the Outgoing Exchange Program, we offer young talented university students and recent graduates the opportunity to go for different kinds of internships abroad in different sectors to practice what they have learnt in university and get a professional experience. By going for an AIESEC internship, students not only get to work with a company in a different country, but they also acquire a deeper understanding of its market, people and working culture. The internship also lets them explore their own working style and gives them a practical work experience, which contributes to their personal and professional development, ultimately making them an employee of choice amongst top graduates. Since 2008, AIESEC in Mauritius has successfully sent more than 80 local Mauritian students to different countries and facilitated their international experience. AIESEC in its Outgoing Exchange

AIESEC in Mauritius has been working for the past 3 years to extend our international internship opportunities to more young people in the country. Our goal is to connect all our different kinds of internship opportunities to the university students and recent graduates in Mauritius, although last year the pool we capitalized on the most is the International Development Internships. The main reason for this is that, these internships are only 6- 8 weeks long and most of the internship program participants last year were undergraduate students who found the duration very convenient as it was the same as their mid-term university breaks.

Experience of Manishka Kistamah - Curtin University of Technology "AIESEC has opened an endless range of development opportunities for me, challenged me to take them and become a person I never thought I could be today’’ It all started last year, when I was studying at the Charles Telfair Institute. I was eager to be well equipped with the knowledge and experience I would need once I leave University, to start work. However, very soon I realized that my studies were providing me with a lot of theoretical knowledge and not much practical experience. I began to search for something that would enable me to develop my professional skills and I came across AIESEC. I went on an internship to Wuhan, China and had the most amazing experience. During my six-week long internship, I discovered a wide range of cultures as I was living and working with students from countries as varied as Kazakhstan, Brazil, Russia and China. It was not that hard for me to adjust in China although I did need some time to adapt to the new environment which meant speaking Mandarin to drinking a lot of tea whenever I was out with my new friends. My work consisted of educating high school students on environmental issues, as well as attending workshops and doing presentations of my country and culture. I would recommend anyone to go on internship and have this lifechanging experience. Being an AIESECer is an awesome experience!

Manish story in Poland My name is Tejasweeraj Auckel (Manish) and I have been in AIESEC since 2008. I finished my University education in May 2010 and decided to go for an internship. AIESEC was here to provide me this wonderful opportunity to experience something new and different. I decided to go to Poland, Local Committee Wroclaw for my internship because after I finished my studies I wanted to discover new things. My experience in Poland has truly been a life-changing experience. I have spent 7 months here now and have met people from so many different countries. I am working in a project called AIESEC University, in the scope of which I am giving beginners and intermediates, French courses in universities and high schools. My students are aged between 15 to 45 years, and for me being able to give these lessons is something I am very proud of. I was responsible for creating this language program, and as well, conducting individual assessments and evaluating the students’ progress. I work with a team of 8 – 15 people who have come from different countries to teach their native language. Having been exposed to their many languages and cultures, I have learnt some Spanish and Russian myself. At a multicultural fest called the AIESEC Global Village that the Local Committee Wroclaw organized- their biggest yet, I had the opportunity to proudly represent Mauritius to a globally diverse audience and at the same time, learn so much about other countries, traditions and cultures. The welcome I have received here is incredible- I have made friends with many local people expanding my experience beyond AIESEC. I have experienced the traditional style of a Polish home, family and food and even celebrated Christmas Eve in a typical Polish way which is completely different to how we celebrate it in Mauritius. In the end, I would say after 7 months of living here in an entirely different country without my family and having to be independent, has helped me to broaden my horizons and gain invaluable experience.

Experience of Technology 10 with AIESEC's Global Internship Program. From the recruitment of our first intern in 2009 to being the national design partner, dealing with AIESEC Mauritius has been an absolute delight. As an outsourcing service provider, Technology10 deals not only with an international customer base but also works with foreign based suppliers and partners. In 2009, we learned about AIESEC and engaged a Colombian intern to add a South American touch to our German, Polish, Indian, British and Mauritian pool of resources. It is always difficult to find a candidate that ticks all the boxes, which is why the patience and persistent follow-up of AIESEC Mauritius was much appreciated again in 2011 when we engaged a Bulgarian resource. The commingling of all these nationalities brings about a real cultural sharing atmosphere in the office with international lunches organised and cheering during international sports events like the football world cup. In 2010, AIESEC approached us to assist them with some design work for their website and printed marketing material. Technology10 did not hesitate to establish a formal relationship as national design partner with the young, energetic and charming team of AIESEC, Mauritius. It is always refreshing to have the members of AIESEC Mauritius at the office to discuss about their projects. No doubt that the young generation benefiting from the AIESEC experience will be among the leaders of tomorrow and contribute to make the world a global village living in peace and harmony thanks to the rich multicultural journeys of travelling all over the world.

Diversity of Projects The main reasons for doing the Incoming Exchange Program is that it gives local AIESEC members, the opportunity to interact with the corporate, development and education Sectors in Mauritius as well as the chance to work with their peers from around the world, which develops greatly their interpersonal and professional skills. This past year, as part of our Incoming Exchange Program, we ran social projects on different issues in collaboration with local NGOs and companies. Projects were run by the Local Chapters at the University of Mauritius, University of Technology and Mauritius Institute of Training and Development on relevant topics which made an impact on the society.

Communication

With increased operations and the fact that AIESEC in Mauritius is the biggest youth-driven organization in Mauritius, one of our priorities was to increase our external visibility and improve the internal communication within the AIESEC Network. It was critical to capitalize on the different communication channels and keep our stakeholders updated about the rapid development of the organization. In October 2010, the National Team met with the President of Mauritius, The Right Honorable Sir Anerood Jugnauth, G.C.S.K., K.C.M.G, Q.C., who has always been concerned about the empowerment of youth in the country and has been immensely supporting AIESEC since its inception here. AIESEC in Mauritius has had over 20 media appearances in print including big national newspapers like L’Express, Le Matinal, The Independent, Le Mauricien, News on Sunday and L’Eco austral. Every event - National Conferences and Social Impact Projects have been broadcast on the National News in the country. In November with the support of our new Design Partner, Technology10, we successful revamped the national website (www.aiesec.org/mauritius) which is now accessible to a wide variety of AIESEC stakeholders and provides users with an entire overview about AIESEC and its activities, as well as, information about upcoming projects and opportunities to be engaged with AIESEC. Over the year, AIESEC was present as well on various business and non-corporate events in order to extend the platform to a wider audience in the country. For internal communication within the AIESEC Network, we have effectively increased usage of our global virtual platform (www.myaiesec.net) for our members to have the opportunity to connect with like-minded young people across the 110 countries to, develop their leadership skills, share knowledge, exchange opinions and effectively manage operations of AIESEC.

National Team 11-12

AIESEC in Mauritius Member Committee 2011-2012 For me, youth signifies positive energy, passion and ambition. I truly believe AIESEC is the best platform for young students, which directs their positive energy into something constructive that they will cherish throughout their life. AIESEC in Mauritius, after existing for 3 years now has achieved a lot merely because the youth has started to understand the amount of experience and learning they can get by being a part of this organization. Initially this was a major challenge for the organization- but only due to the fact that it was new. Now the membership is growing as awareness of the organization is rapidly increasing day by day amongst students. The past year has been incredible in terms of work done and results achieved- the impact we’ve had through various projects is amazing. There has been an active involvement of the corporate, governmental and developmental sector in our activities, which has helped us create various opportunities for the local youth to understand the nuances of people and organizational management and, in the process develop their personal and professional skills. It is absolutely crucial that their involvement continues, as the next year we want to reach out to more young people-to create more life changing experiences and have a greater positive impact on society. Sustainability is also a very important factor for the organization this year as it has grown tremendously the past year in terms of its reach, impact and organizational results.
