Welcome to our spring edition of Trends! Forget about the dreary cold weather or any references to winter, spring has sprung, and this issue is all about home and garden ideas resources.

and

Personally, spring is my favorite time of the year. It is something about life reemerging from my garden that always brings a certain sense of excitement. As most of my staff would tell you, I’m an avid gardener and resident green thumb at the AFRO, which is why I’m so excited we’ve chosen to focus on home and garden trends. I can’t wait to read about new ideas for cleaning up my garden from winter debris. And maybe I’ll incorporate a new herb garden to add a little spice to the gourmet dishes served at this year’s garden parties. We also wanted to share with our readers stories that will enrich their lifestyles from finding the right neighborhood to buying their first home to renovating a current home with a new look to the bathroom or kitchen. Our decorating spread shares with readers trend for reinventing the look of your home. Who knows, I might just find an interesting design concept to incorporate in my own home. As you read this issue, I invite you to find ways to spring forward in your life and in the lives of others. Whether it is volunteering as a mentor, cleaning up your neighborhood, or simply living healthier, make an effort to spring yourself forward. Best,

ver the past decade, Baltimore suffered a loss of population as people migrated to the perceived greener pastures of the suburbs. But now, due to the work of neighborhood organizations and wellplaced incentives, the charm of the city is drawing people back. For the first time in many years, according to Anna Custer, executive director of Live Baltimore, the city experienced a population bump. While access to major roadways and other strategic locations, the public transportation network and housing value in the area played a role, the appeal of the neighborhoods is the real draw. And while all of Charm City is pretty great, a few

A variety of initiatives are in place, spearheaded by the Reservoir Hill Improvement Council – which

Located in the northeastern part of the city, it is bounded by Harford Road, Sinclair Lane and the Herring Run stream. The area consists largely of brick row houses with classic front porches, filled with timeless amenities like hardwood floors and fireplaces. “Belair-Edison is a beautiful neighborhood, close to downtown and close to Aberdeen,” said Mark Sissman, president of

For more information on this neighborhood, start with the BENI website at www.belair-edison.org. Another neighborhood getting a lot of attention is Reservoir Hill. This area of central Baltimore includes Druid Hill Park, the Baltimore Zoo and Druid Lake, and is bounded by North Avenue, Reisterstown Road and the Jones Fall Expressway. This neighborhood consists of very large town homes, most in historic Victorian style, with spacious rooms, high ceilings, decorative mantles and hardwood floors. Because Reservoir

Purchasing a home will most likely be the largest investment in your lifetime, so become as knowledgeable as you can. The purpose of counseling is to become informed of the roles and responsibilities of all the professionals involved and to understand the entire buying process. “A realtor has a vested interest in getting you into a home. A loan office has a vested interest in getting you a loan. I cannot stress it enough - do your research first,” said Reginald Exum, assistant vice president with M&T Bank’s mortgage division. Government agencies offer many resources for first time homebuyers, free of charge. The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development works with

is comprised of two parts. The first part covers the roles of the lender and realtor, CDA loans and Baltimore City initiatives. The second part includes one-on-one counseling to discuss each participant’s readiness to purchase a home. Participants are asked to discuss their income and expenses during this private counseling session with credit professionals. Grants are available to those who successfully complete the program. For more information, call 410-523-8150.

Save! Save! Save!

John and Latosha Palmer moved into their three bedroom, four bathroom home in the Windsor Mill area just one day after walking down the aisle and couldn’t wait to start a family. On Jan. 15, the couple welcomed Jaylan Arielle Palmer into the family home. “We wanted room to raise a family, live comfortably and entertain guests. We even had room to build a recording studio in the basement,” they said.

Earnest money is money deposited by a buyer that is applied to the purchase price and other expenses. “An earnest money deposit shows the seller that you are serious and capable about purchasing a home,” said Lachele Kellam, a licensed real estate agent in the Baltimore area since 2003. If the goal is to have $6,000 saved to cover a down payment, be sure to set aside at least $500 a month for an entire year. And that $500 should not make or break you financially. If so, that’s an indication this is not the best time to consider purchasing a home. Once you determine how much you would like to save for the down payment, do not touch those funds. Exercise self-control. Consider the big picture. Just imagine turning the key to the door of your big, beautiful home.

you can. Once again, keep in mind what the end goal is. Nothing should get in the way of heading down the road to financial stability and homeownership.

Improve your credit score Most banks have a bill pay feature that allows you to enroll your monthly bills to be automatically paid on the same day of each month. This alleviates the stress of writing countless checks and the good payment history will boost your credit score. And only charge items on a credit card that you are able to pay off immediately. For more tips on how to improve your credit score, check out www.myfico. com/crediteducation. The higher the score, the lower the interest rate. “A large part of our financial literacy campaign is to coach individuals on expense tracking, budgeting, debt reduction and improving credit scores. We urge individuals, young and old, to take advantage of our free resources and to become educated,” said Vicki Clark, director of Housing And Financial Literacy for the Greater Baltimore Urban League.

Get pre-qualified Getting pre-qualified involves a loan professional reviewing your income and expenses to determine the type of mortgage payment you can afford. “My job is to help the potential buyer establish a realistic timeframe to get into a home,” said Exum. This is determined by viewing pay stubs, W-2 forms, an updated credit report, bank statements and the work and rental history of the past two years. Although these documents assist in determining the creditworthiness of the applicant, Exum said a potential buyer should have a better understanding of their personal affordability than an expert. There can be hundreds of

loan programs at a given time. “Don’t let anyone, including a professional, tell you what type of loan to get. Allow them to make recommendations of the programs that best meet your needs,” he said. After prequalification, refrain from making any large purchases such as a car or entertainment system. “A prequalification is valid for about 120 days but must be updated every 30 days,” Exum said.

Now that you know how much of a home you can afford, it’s time to find a qualified professional to guide you through the process. Get referrals from family members, friends and coworkers, or log onto the National Association of Realtors website (realtor.org) for a directory of qualified professionals in your area. Lending institutions require property insurance before closing to protect the investment. Make sure to read the policy to see exactly what is covered. Many policies do not cover water, earthquake and flood damage.

involves the resolution of two issues: confirming the fulfillment of the promises in the sales contract and finalizing the buyer’s loan and the associated disbursement of funds. There is a lot of paperwork in this process. Generally the buyer has the opportunity to read the contract prior

to sitting down at closing. Because the contract contains many pages, a thorough review ahead of time is recommended. This is also the best time to ask the seller and their agent any questions. It’s very important to be prepared for the disbursement of funds phase of the transaction. Any funds to be presented to the other party should be in the form of a certified check or money order. The title representative will accept funds and cut checks for all involved parties, including the seller and brokers. Congratulations, you are officially a homeowner. This is a very emotional time with feelings of excitement and accomplishment. Although you’ve just crossed a large hurdle, you aren’t done yet. Post-buying counseling is just as important as pre-purchase counseling. Advice on how to stay on top of mortgage payments, foreclosure prevention and maximizing your investment is also offered at the Greater Baltimore Urban League.

esigning on a dime? Throwing the party of the season? Some quick and easy fixes will make your home ready for a spring

party. Whether you are looking for sophistication, functionality, fun or all three, here are some tips on how to make your living space an oasis. Remember, the most important elements for making your place special are designs that reflect you, like photos of family and friends, things you’ve collected and examples of hobbies. The cheapest and easiest way to change the look and feel of your space is to paint. You will be amazed at the transformation that occurs with a fresh coat of paint. Before you start, you need to assess the shape of your space and come up with a color scheme that complements the furniture you already have. Some of the popular color schemes this season, from Benjamin Moore, are a mellow palette of greens and golds combined with plenty of light in the soft yellows to add symmetry. One accent wall is painted a handsome sage green, balanced by the buttery yellow below the chair rail. Accent walls should usually be positioned opposite an entryway to visually balance a room. A darker gold covers the other three upper walls, playing off the yellow tones below. Crisp linen white trim ties the room together, running along the chair rail, molding, and trim. The two-color wall scheme works great in a low-ceilinged, boxy room, where the small square proportions need a colorful jolt. It also works well in a room where attention needs to be deflected from odd architectural proportions. The rich orange on the two side walls visually pulls them in toward the center. The lighter green on the window

wall pushes that space outward. Both shades are bound together by a crisp band of glossy white trim. The entire color scheme could be reflected in a carefully chosen painting, with a red tree, blue sky, and earth tones. When considering such a color scheme for yourself, take into account that dark colors appear to advance, while light colors appear to recede. It’s important to remember not to test paint with a paint chip. Apply a 4 feet square of the color on a white wall to asses how it looks in the room. Many paint stores, such as Stebbins Anderson LLC of Towson, carry small

spaces. The shelving provides additional space for displaying collections. Adding a plant, photographs, a candle, a vase or books on some shelves on various levels, creates depth, texture and color in the previously ho-hum space. A tasteful and affordable option for a vase is the Cherry Sparkle Vase in red available at Target. Buy two or three of varying heights and width for grouping on a shelf. Macy’s also has many great knick knacks perfect for bringing your new shelving system to life, such as beautiful and inexpensive Ansel Adams framed prints. Another nice touch are B. Smith Lodge Scented candles available at Bed Bath and Beyond. Macy’s stocks cute throw blankets for your couch to add color and visual interest to the living room. A colorful throw can help cover worn spots or stains on your couches. Couch slip covers are also a quick and trendy fix. An area rug adds color to a room and anchors your furniture, without destroying hardwood floors. The tank and bowl are usually two separate pieces but a few onepiece toilets are also available. Gravity tank toilets are relatively inexpensive, with retail prices for two-piece toilets ranging from $100 to $1,000 and one-piece models costing a little more. When replacing a toilet, there are a few things to consider. Standard toilets come in both round and elongated shapes. Many 6-litre tanks are smaller and may not cover the same wall area as your previous toilet. If the wall behind your toilet is unfinished, you should measure the tank size prior to shopping for a new one. Also the toilet 16 Trends

pedestal and basin combinations, and vessel and countertop sinks. Most popular these days are the vessels and countertop sinks because they are more contemporary, sleek and very stylish. They range from $100 to over $600. Tubs are generally the largest investment in one’s bathroom. There are soaking, whirlpool, air and clawfoot tubs; each offering specialized features to meet your everyday needs. Of the four designs, the air and clawfoot tubs will range from $200-$6,000 and the whirlpool and soaking tubs will be a bit pricier. that helps relieve aches and pains from overexertion and stress. And most importantly, the tubs are designed to selfdrain so that mold and fungi will not collect in the piping system. The air tub is designed to give an even massage that calms and soothes the entire body, unlike the whirlpool that targets specific areas of the body. They have an air system that provides a steady stream of bubbles from holes positioned along the bottom of the tub, and sometimes the back and sides, that produce thousands of air bubbles for an overall hydrotherapy massage. Each hole forces heated air into the tub. Vintage, clawfoot style tubs are the latest in bathroom design. They are offered in cast iron, acrylic, jetted and bubble-jet designs. A fresh coat of paint will do wonders for a space. The hardest part of this step is picking the color. Once that has been accomplished, make sure to choose the proper type of paint. resistant paint. Semi and high gloss paints have no pores for mold to grab onto to grow. Although pricier, it is well worth the added expense. Another option is to add a mildewcide to the paint before using it. Also important is properly preparing the surfaces before painting by cleaning with detergent and rinsing thoroughly. Another useful tip is to apply lotion before painting to allow for easy cleanup should paint come in contact with your skin. Lining a paint tray with plastic wrap or aluminum foil will allow for quick, easy cleanup as well. Rollers are ideal for even coverage; coat well in paint but avoid over saturating. These tips are sure to have your bathroom looking as if a pro did it. Bathrooms can be open and inviting, warm and relaxing, or cool and fun. Any amateur designer can create a great escape with appropriate accessories and coordinating colors. Try your hand at designing a bathroom to compliment your lifestyle.

“Updating a bathroom can easily cost over $15,000, including labor and materials. When working on a budget, it is wise to plan ahead and many of the projects you can do yourself,” said John Palmer, owner of JP Construction Inc. “You must develop a checklist of what needs to be done early on to eliminate splurging. Make a budget and stick to it,” he said. Here are the basic instructions for a few common projects that you can do yourself and save a wad of cash .

Replacing a toilet seat Most toilet seats are manufactured in two different sizes, and replacement seats are made to fit them. To replace

the toilet seat, you will need the toilet seat, a wrench, penetrating oil and bolts.

1. To take off the original seat, remove the two nuts on the hinge and lift the seat up and out. You may encounter rusted bolts that are difficult to remove. To solve this problem, apply penetrating oil to loosen them. Allow the oil to sit for a while and then proceed to remove. Use a wrench, a deep socket wrench or even a hacksaw to remove difficult bolts.

2.

Once the original seat is removed, clean off the surface of the toilet where the old seat rested.

3.

Install the new seat and secure by tightening the bolts and screws. Be sure not to over tighten. You may

need to remove the seat in the future. Palmer mentioned that toilet repair kits are available to replace the existing mechanisms in the tank. These can provide optimal performance from your unit. They range from $6 to $20.

itchen remodels are one of the most popular remodels made by homeowners because it offers a great return on investment as well giving you the opportunity to simplify your daily routines. An effective design is crucial when planning a kitchen remodel. It’s quite simple. When choosing cabinets, pick what you like. There are many options available. Maple is the most popular wood for cabinet doors but there is also cherry, hickory, pine, alder and mahogany to choose from. If wood is not your thing, cabinets are also made of polyester and plastic laminate, stainless steel and glass. You aren’t done yet. Selecting your door style is just as important. Choices range from flat to raised to curved, and may be plain and simple or intricately carved. In more traditional kitchens, you’ll find inset and lipped doors; partial overlay and full overlay provide the clean lines associated with more contemporary designs. New countertops will give your kitchen space an entirely different feel and look. Granite countertops are definitely top of the line. They’re beautiful and durable, but costly. Hiring a professional to properly install granite counters is recommended. Wood is warm and creates a homey feel, but must be properly sealed to maximize the look of your investment. Concrete is durable, but extreme heat can cause warping and standing moisture can discolor the surface. Laminate countertops are less expensive and scratch resistant, but can become scorched by hot pots. Changing the floor can have a dramatic effect on the look of a kitchen. When deciding where to invest your money, consider whether you have pets and children. Although the look and feel of the floor is important, it should also wear well. Laminate floors may be the easi-

est to install and maintain and can be placed on top of an existing floor. Vinyl is ideal for budget-conscious projects. Available in an array of colors, it is also easy to install. Ceramic tile is easy to clean and also wears well. Wood is a classic look but a large concern is the ability to scratch easily. How the space is lighted will impact not only the look, but the functionality of the space. When deciding on a lighting scheme, there are three basic types of lighting: general illumination, highlighting and accenting, and task lighting. General illumination maintains a specific light level in a room. In a kitchen such illumination may include

Simply pick what appeals to you but, be sure to make informed decisions. recessed and over-cabinet lighting. Incandescent lights, which tend to be more yellow, and fluorescent lights, which are whiter, are good types of general lighting. Highlighting and accenting brings the light level up to about three times the general illumination level in order to point up a specific feature, such as a decorative range hood and carved cabinet doors. Toe-space lighting, makes cabinets appear to float above the floor; and over-cabinet lighting makes cabinets look higher by expanding the space above them. Task lighting provides illumination for specific tasks, such as cooking, reading, etc. It can be located on the wall above the work area or under the cabinets above the area. Kitchen sinks are hitting the market in cool designs too. There are many styles to choose from. Undermount sinks are popular due to their seamless appearance. These can only be

installed in a concrete countertop or other solid material. A self-rimming sink has a rolled and finished edge which makes it very easy to install. A single bowl sink has one large basin and is ideal for kitchens. Double and triple bowl sinks are also available. An apron front sink has a large bowl with an exposed front panel that works best with country style décor. European gourmet sinks have become quite popular in recent years in the United States due to their unique features and styles. Today’s kitchens are used for a multitude of activities like cooking, eating, entertaining, and the gathering of friends and family. There are several techniques used in creating a user-friendly kitchen design. The work triangle focuses on the arrangement of the refrigerator, sink, and stove and is used to create an efficient workspace in the kitchen. The goal is to make the distance from each of these areas far enough to not feel cramped and close enough to carry food and dishes without strain. One way to organize the items you stored in the kitchen is to include a walk-in pantry. This allows a homeowner to quickly search through cabinets and drawers. They localize the kitchen traffic, providing more open space in the work triangle. Pull-out pantries can also be used for kitchens that are tight on space. Every inch of space in your kitchen can be used to store many items. Consider installing tall cabinets that go up to the ceiling. Also add shelving inside to maximize storage space. For larger items such as pots and pans, consider adding a hanging rack to free up some space in your cupboards. Now, that doesn’t seem so hard. With so many styles to choose from, you are on your way to designing your dream kitchen. Simply pick what appeals to you but be sure to make informed decisions. Certified professional are on hand at home improvement retailers like Home Depot and Lowes. Trends 21

The do-it-yourself kitchen

Updating your kitchen, your way By Robin Akinwale hy not treat your kitchen to a few upgrades? After all, the family kitchen is one of the most utilized spaces in the home. It’s the place where people gather to talk or share a meal. What do you have to lose? Doing it yourself can save you money. John Palmer, owner of JP Construction Inc., shared a few easy do-it-yourself projects that will make any kitchen more appealing. Compiling a checklist of tasks, which he recommends, can eliminate the possibility of exceeding your budget.

alignment. Press down slightly as you lay the tile to force it into the mortar. If you are using spacers, install one between each tile as you place the tiles on the wall.

4.

Install partial and specialty tiles. Place a full tile in the leftover space at the end of a row and scribe a line on the tile where it needs to be cut. Use a tile cutter or motorized tile saw to cut any partial tiles in a straight line. Curved or notched tile can be cut using a tile nipper. Be careful. If you try to nip off too large a piece, you can end up snapping off much more than you wanted.

scrape off as much grout as possible.

8. Clean the tiles, remove the remaining grout with a wet sponge. Have a large bucket on hand and refill it with clean water often. Just as you did with the float, wipe the sponge diagonally over the tiles. Wipe over each grout joint only once; repeated wiping could pull the grout out of the joint.

9. After the grout has dried to a haze, which takes less than an hour, use a soft cloth to buff away the grout film.

Doing-it-yourself can be challenging, fun and a learning experience for your entire family. And if it involves saving cash, why not tackle a project head-on.

5.

Apply grout. Once the tile is in place, and you’ve waited the recommended time for the mortar to set, typically overnight, you can apply grout. If you’ve used tile spacers, remove these first by pulling them out with pliers.

6.

Mix grout, if necessary, then spread it over the tiles with a grout float. Press down on the float to force the grout into the joints.

7.

Squeegee off the excess. To remove the excess grout, hold the float at an angle so the bottom edge acts like a squeegee. Skew the float diagonally as you wipe it across the tiles. This way, the edge of the float can safely span the joints without falling in and squeezing out the grout. Continue working the area until most of the excess grout has been removed. Wipe down the float, then go over the area one more time with the float held nearly vertical to

Painting the cabinets This project requires degreasing cleanser, a screwdriver, sandpaper, primer, a paint, paintbrush and sprayer.

1. Clean the cabinets. Make sure they are free of all grease, grime and food residue. It may be easier to simply remove the doors first.

4. Paint the cabinets. There are several ways to apply the paint. A pneumatic sprayer is the best way to get a smooth and glossy finish. But you can still get a great finish by using a high quality paintbrush. 2 1/2” to 3” would be ideal.

5. Add additional coats. Lightly apply your first coat and let it dry completely. Once that is complete, add your second coat. 6. Once the doors are painted and fully dry, hang them back up and enjoy the bright, clean and renewed space that you’ve worked so hard to achieve. Doing-it-yourself can be challenging, fun and a learning experience for your entire family. And if it involves saving cash, why not tackle a project head-on. All materials needed for these projects can be found at your nearby home improvement store. These simple tips can save you thousands. Find more easy do-it-yourself tips at diynetwork. com and hgtv.com.

2. Sand the cabinets using a piece of fine grit sandpaper, 150 or finer. The sanded surface will allow the primer to hold onto the cabinet surface. 3. Apply primer. If your cabinets are already painted and you are re-painting them the same color, it is OK to

skip this step and go ahead and apply the paint. But if your cabinets are stained and you are trying to cover up the natural wood grain with paint, you must prime them first.

od – pouring hot tap water in a small container, adding your seeds evenly to the water and allowing them to sit covered for up to 24 hours – can produce lovely spring blooms that germinate days faster than normal growth time. Another tactic for early produce of thriving blossoms makes for great family time and is a fun way to get young children involved. Together, line the inside of jars with sandpaper, toss in some seeds, then screw on the lids and shake, like instruments, to the beat of a song. After your karaoke, disassemble your instruments and plant the scarred seeds in pots with moist soil, watering as needed and, together, watch them grow. Keep your garden growing Remember it’s very important to water and weed your plants early and often. When watering, be sure to saturate the soil thoroughly and make sure there’s ample drainage. Watering deep allows plants to grow strong roots, which will insure growth for seasons to come. Weeding keeps your garden clear of pesky plants that can strip the soil of nutrients the herbs need to survive and it makes the garden look attractive and clean.

Showing it off: The evolution of the garden party Updated garden parties still hold romance, magic By Bobi Wood When we imagine the garden parties of our great-grandmothers’ days, we picture party goers in wide-brimmed sunhats tied with ribbons and flowers, their hands protected with delicate white gloves. The food served would include cucumber and watercress sandwiches. The tables were spread with crisply starched white linen and damask, and crystal glassware spar28 Trends

kled against the setting sun. The mood and atmosphere was one of heightened elegance. Even if you haven’t worn a sunhat since a disastrous attempt at a Southern Belle look worn as a bridesmaid’s gown back in 1976, you can still enjoy garden party magic. Today’s garden party is still elegant, but it’s a little more casual. Garden party fare of yesteryear was prepared entirely indoors, then dis-

cretely transferred to the garden and laid out in dishes surrounded by ice cubes to keep everything cold. Today, the preparation of food outdoors by the guests provides focal activities and opportunities for conversation during springtime gatherings. The addition of the element of fire, be it over a has-itall gas grill or a humble hibachi, adds an element of drama and romance all its own. And, let’s face it, it provides something for the guys to do.

Instead of cucumber sandwiches, try grilled salmon served with a cucumber-dill salad.

Grilled Salmon with Onion and Lemon Here’s a delicious grilled salmon recipe with lemon that’s great for summertime entertaining. This is simple to prepare in larger quantities for your event. Total time: About 30 minutes Serves 2 • 2 large salmon fillets • 1/2 stick butter • lemon pepper • lemon slices from 2 lemons • onion slices from 1 onion Remove the skin from the salmon fillets before cooking. Rinse the salmon fillets, and bring to room temperature. Take the top portion of your broiler pan out and spray with cooking spray. Lay the salmon fillets onto pan, and season with lemon pepper. Add your onion slices right on top of the salmon fillets. Next add the lemon slices. Cut your butter into small chunks and place on top of the onions and lemons. Put on the charcoal grill with

indirect heat for about 15 minutes until done.

Cucumbers in Dilled Sour Cream Overwhelmed by the garden’s onslaught of cucumbers? Here’s a tasty way to put them to good use. These cucumbers are perfect with fried chicken and outstanding on grilled hot dogs! Note: Salting the cucumbers draws out excess moisture and helps keep the salad from getting overly watery. Total time: About 30 minutes Makes about 2 cups 1 large cucumber, halved lengthwise, seeded, sliced into 1/4 -thick half-moons • 1 t. kosher salt • 3 T. mayonnaise • 3 T. sour cream • 3 T. red onion, minced • 2 T. white wine vinegar • 1 T. sugar • 1 T. chopped fresh dill • Scoop seeds from halved cucumbers with a spoon. Place cucumber slices in a colander; sprinkle with salt, tossing to coat. Let stand for 15 minutes, then rinse and

pat dry with paper towels. Combine mayonnaise, sour cream, onion, vinegar, sugar, and dill in a mixing bowl. Add cucumber slices and toss to coat. Let salad stand for at least 5 minutes before serving, or chill for up to one day. In olden times, servers would discretely remove leftovers and used serving containers. But today, most of us have to do our own dishes, so we’re grateful that fine bone china has been replaced by fabulous dishwashersafe plastic pieces that can withstand the trip to garden and back. Also gone are the white linen tablecloths, costly to purchase and time-consuming to maintain. Bamboo or hemp placemats are the modern-day equivalents because they’re trendy, easy to clean, and can be thrown into the compost heap when they outlive their usefulness. As in yesteryear, a springtime party requires liquid refreshment. But don’t labor over trying to recreate grandma’s Manhattan recipe. Instead, serve up ice-cold white sangria at your garden party. Our white sangria recipe, below, refreshes the palate with the aroma and flavor of fresh granny smith apples. It serves six, and is easily increased for larger parties.

Cover pitcher with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours. (Overnight is best.). Add the Gran Marnier, Riesling, Lemon Juice, Vodka, and sugar to the pitcher. Add soda up to 2 inches from the top of the pitcher. Add the Granny Smith Apple to the pitcher. Stir well, pressing the fruit as you stir. Serve over ice (with extra soda, if you want). Fruit can be used for additional batches, simply cover with rum and continue with step 4. In the springtime, our hearts turn to thoughts of love, just as our grandparents’ did many years ago. What food better evokes amore than chocolate? Our new spin on a recipe for chocolate-covered strawberries, below, can be used to prepare this time-tested dessert in a cinch. We substitute shortening for the paraffin used in earlier incarnations of the recipe. For an even more elegant presentation, drizzle white chocolate over the milk chocolate for an elaborate look evocative of lace.
