LIFESTYLES

The four-day shopping extravaganza is a far cry from its humble beginnings. In September 1965 with 66 vendors, 11 volunteers raised an impressive $5,000 for the community. In contrast, the volunteers of the 52nd bazaar will log more than 10,000 service hours to once again raise over a quarter of a million dollars for the KMC. In 2015, a staggering $263,000 was given back to the community. So far in 2016, more than $60,000 has been awarded in scholarships, $33,000 to local schools, and almost $39,000 to various other community projects and programs that build and strengthen the local and national military community.

style and fair food choices. Each booth, operated as a fundraiser by Ramstein private organizations, features a unique offering and makes a great lunch or dinner stop. The inviting atmosphere and plenty of fest-style seating makes it an ideal place to meet up with friends and neighbors and spend time with your family. “The bazaar is a great event that not only brings families and friends together but supports the community,” said Amanda Elliot, Ramstein Bazaar chairperson. “The proceeds that go towards our organizations and programs are invaluable. I can only hope that all who attend the bazaar find a treasure for themselves or as a gift.”

NEWS

If you have spent much time in any military community, you have probably heard about the mythical Ramstein Bazaar. When you meet someone who’s been and they start reminiscing about the hangars filled with treasures — colorful Polish pottery, vintage finds, and the wide selection of wines — they get a kind of wistful look of contentment and an air of longing about them. For the last 52 years, the annual Ramstein Bazaar has been a core event in the KMC, supporting every aspect of military life. To continue in this awesome tradition, we present the 52nd annual Ramstein Bazaar: “A Year of Treasures.” Hosted annually by the 86th Force Support Squadron, working through the Ramstein Officers’ Spouses Club, this event depends entirely on the help of community volunteers to be a success. This year the bazaar takes place Thursday to Sept. 18 on Ramstein and will feature more than 130 vendors, including 20 vendors making their Bazaar debut. Vendors are carefully selected from all over Europe, including Russia, France, Poland, Portugal, Turkey and, of course, Germany. This variety means there is something for everyone. While the shopping is great, it’s not just about the vendors. You will also find a wide assortment of imbiss-

AFRC welcomes new KMC members at base intro

Kathy Keane, Airman and Family Readiness Center community readiness consultant, speaks to service members and their families during a base introduction brief Aug. 24 on Ramstein. Several base organizations brief newcomers on important community information such as housing, financial, legal and safety aspects as well as local culture.

Settling into another base can be a challenging experience, especially when you are unfamiliar with your new surroundings. Thankfully, there are people at the Airman and Family Readiness Center who are dedicated to welcoming new members of the KMC to their new duty station. Base introduction facilitators from the AFRC are responsible for making sure new KMC members are given sufficient information to familiarize themselves with their new community. While representatives from various units around Ramstein brief the newcomers about their respective organizations, Kathy Keane, AFRC com-

munity readiness consultant, and her colleagues facilitate the whole base intro program. “The base intro briefing is their first interface with the AFRC,” Keane said. “It’s just a warm, friendly face letting them know we’re the information and referral agency. As they’re transitioning in, they can get all the information they need from us. If we don’t know it, we’ll get it for them.” The purpose of the program is to provide new KMC members with their mandatory briefings, which are a part of their inprocessing. “But they also get valuable information on the services that are available here at Ramstein to help them and their families transition,” Keane said. “They get a lot of customs and cultural information.” Keane stressed the importance of base intro, saying she wasn’t able to attend it when she came to Ramstein

and wished she had received the information her participants receive today. “Unfortunately, I did not go to the newcomer’s briefing when I first got here. I was not in the workforce at that time,” Keane said, explaining that base intro is mandatory for active-duty members and optional for family members. “I wish I would have known some of the services that the AFRC had available for family members.” A base intro facilitator, along with the rest of the AFRC family, must be sensitive and compassionate toward the people they serve, Keane added. “I think they have to have a caring heart,” Keane said. “I think anybody that works at the AFRC has to care. … And we’ve got a whole slew of people there that have that: they care, they’re knowledgeable and they’re helpful.” Airman 1st Class Gregory Schroeder, 721st Aerial Port Squadron

air transportation apprentice, found base intro to be very helpful and informative. Schroeder is new to Ramstein and the Air Force and says the briefings helped him prepare for what he will face on the job and in his career. “You never know what’s going to happen, especially somewhere where you don’t know (much about). I’m excited for the adventure,” Schroeder said. “They give you a lot of information, things you need to know to get around such as things that are good to do and (things) not to do. The facilitators keep you interested. They explain things in-depth from examples that they’ve been through and give you the best advice that they could.” Whether it’s a new Airman beginning his career at Ramstein or a longtime member with many stripes on his sleeve, Keane and other briefers from the AFRC are ready to give them a warm welcome.

786th CES stops Zika in its tracks Story and photos by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

With new outbreaks occurring in the U.S., many Airmen may wonder what is being done to prevent the spread of the Zika virus overseas while they are stationed here. The virus is spread through birth, sexual activity or being bit by an infected Aedes mosquito. The 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Pest Management office plays a part in stopping the virus. They do so by spraying repellent on aircraft that are traveling to any of 28 countries where the virus is known to be. “It’s very effective,” said Staff. Sgt. Antonio Gross, 786th CES pest management specialist. “The residue we leave kills an array of flying insects, so when the mosquito lands on that particular chemical, it dies. I think it’s necessary to take out one of the ways it can be transmitted, and we’re doing a pretty good job of killing the host of the virus.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most common signs of a Zika infection are fever, rash, joint pain or conjunctivitis but can also include headaches or muscle pain. An infection during pregnancy is linked to microcephaly and other birth defects. The CDC is currently reporting there is no vaccine available or a cure

Airman 1st Class Christopher Jones, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron pest management specialist, sprays repellent in a C-130J Super Hercules to prevent the spread of the Zika virus Aug. 29 on Ramstein. for the virus. The repellent is an important step in keeping the virus contained, as it would be difficult to prevent infected mosquitos from entering a plane. “Planes coming from Africa are high threats, as it’s where the main source of the virus originates,” said Airman 1st Class Christopher Jones, 786th CES pest management specialist. “We are doing something to help our members wherever they go to abate the issue.” The pest management office not only sprays

Ramstein aircraft but all aircraft in U.S. Air Forces in Europe. “When we first started this, some planes had to change their mission,” Gross said. “Planes from other countries or areas have to come here to get sprayed because we are the only one in USAFE with the material to do it.” The mission will always continue, and it is through the work of 786th CES pest management Airmen that it moves forward while keeping Airmen safe. “These planes fly all over, so if we didn’t do what we

do, they couldn’t do what they do,” Jones said. “We are putting up a protective barrier and keeping it up so the mosquitos have a hard time establishing themselves.”

KMC members get multilingual

Students attend a French course Aug. 30 on Ramstein. Registration is $85 per student for the eight-week classes, which are available to KMC members, including civilian personnel and dependents.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Force Support Squadron is offering novice and intermediate French and German courses on Ramstein. Students can learn the fundamentals of both German and French languages and should be able to speak and understand the material at a basic level by completion of the beginner’s course. Learning new languages can be an advantage when traveling, whether it

is for business or for leisure. “We want the students to take advantage of this opportunity to learn their host nation’s language,” said Koy Grant, 86th FSS Ramstein and Vogelweh community centers director. “We hope that people will gain knowledge and enjoy it.” For those who reside in a country that speaks a language they aren’t familiar with, having a community that offers these courses can help students to navigate around their new home more easily. Though learning a new language can be challenging, the eight-week courses are designed to make it easier for students to grasp the

693rd ISRG increases capabilities during Red Flag 16-3 by Tech. Sgt. Darnell T. Cannady 480th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing Public Affairs

The 693rd Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group, stationed at Ramstein, participated in the Red Flag 16-3 exercise July 11 to 29 at the Nevada Test and Training Range on Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. The mission of Red Flag is to provide unrivaled air, space and cyber combat power for America by combining available assets to create a realistic air, ground and space threat environment for combat training. This exercise provides a forum for face-to-face exchange of ideas and lessons learned between joint and combined forces. The 693rd ISRG Distributed Ground Station-4 trained while supporting various groups during the exercise. The DGS-4 team consisted primarily of Airmen from the 693rd ISRG, representing the 24th Intel Squadron, 450th Intel Squadron, 402nd Intel Squadron and 693rd Intel Support Squadron, but they were also augmented by one airman each from DGS-1, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia; DGS-2, Beale Air Force Base, California; DGS-5, Joint Base Pearl HarborHickam, Hawaii; DGS-Kansas; and DGS-Massachusetts. “The DGS-4 team was a critical element in the planning and execution of numerous missions during Red Flag,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Christopher Workinger, DGS-4 Red Flag Detachment commander. “Ultimately, we brought the combat capability of the U-2, RQ-4, National Technical Means and fusion analysis through the Distributed Common Ground System weapons system to mission commanders, aircrews and cyber and space operators during 12 missions covering defensive counterair, offensive counterair, air interdiction, strategic attack, dynamic targeting, and combat search and rescue.” Throughout planning and execution, DGS-4 Airmen interacted with

every combat capability that was present at Red Flag 16-3 and across every domain the Air Force operates in — air, space and cyberspace. Many objectives dealt with optimizing ISR operations against specific tactical problems, integrating with other USAF and joint capabilities, maximizing ISR cross-cues, and ultimately exercising and showcasing all of the DCGS’ geospatial intelligence and signal intelligence capabilities. “We got better each day,” Workinger said. “We learned with each mission and raised the bar

every day, and we eventually got to the point where the Red Flag staff and major command observers highlighted the DGS-4 team as the best they’d seen at Red Flag since the DGS crews were introduced to the exercise.” The DGS-4 team showcased the capabilities and tactics of the DCGS platform and, most importantly, how the exploitation and dissemination process can enhance a mission commander’s plan. By being present for planning and execution, they were able to demonstrate what DGS Airmen bring to the fight in terms

of GEOINT and SIGINT, and that is not widely understood by the combat air forces. “With a few very minor exceptions, we met all of our objectives and had a very, very successful exercise, but being mission complete doesn’t mean we can rest,” Workinger said. “The entire team was energized to get back to Ramstein Air Base, Germany, and integrate what we have learned into our processes here at home station. There is always room for improvement when it comes to combat capability against an ever-changing adversary.”

by Senior Airman Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Jet engines start with a deafening roar, warming the tarmac while they await takeoff into clear blue skies. Today, like most days, aircraft from the 86th Operations Group are being prepared for flight to complete daily training requirements and mission objectives. “Our mission is to fly and deploy, providing airlift, airdrop and aeromedical evacuation capabilities to units within our reach,” said Maj. Scott Vander Ploeg, 86th OG director of staff. “On any given day we can be on three or four different continents supporting the U.S. and its allies.” While maintaining a presence on multiple continents, Airmen from the 86th OG primarily support two combatant commanders. “We typically assist U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command,” Vander Ploeg said. “But we have the capabilities to provide support to other combatant commands if necessary.” The 86th OG’s operations directly tie into the 86th Airlift Wing’s mission by employing air mobility throughout the European and African theaters

with the efforts of nearly 1,300 Airmen and a fleet of C-130J Super Hercules, C-40B Clipper, C-37 Electra, C-21A and C-20H aircraft. “As a team, you guys swing from one area of responsibility to another on any given day,” said Brig. Gen.

Richard G. Moore Jr., 86th AW commander. “The workload isn’t getting any lighter, and you continue to bring back the planes we send out.” When it comes to mission completion and efficiency, members from the 86th OG continuously impress their

chain of command. “Airmen in the 86th OG are some of the most professional Airmen I’ve worked with,” Vander Ploeg said. “When it comes to the mission, they make it happen despite any challenges that arise.”

World’s biggest wine fest starts today with parade by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The world’s biggest wine fest, Duerkheimer Wurstmarkt, will start today. Bad Duerkheim, along the German Wine Street, will host this traditional fest and lure about 600,000 visitors from all over the world. Since it will be the fest’s 600th anniversary, it will begin with a parade at 4 p.m. today. More than 750 participants on floats and in walking groups will present the history of Wurstmarkt on a 3.2-kilometer route. Anybody wanting to watch the fest parade should consider coming early. Some streets will close to motorized traffic at 2 p.m. Almost 300 vendors and ride owners will provide their offers in an amusement park set up on the 45,000-square-meter fest grounds next to the Duerkheimer Fass, the world’s biggest wine barrel. This barrel actually houses a restaurant, and if it was used as a barrel, it could hold 1.7 million liters of wine. The annual wine fest will be celebrated in two parts: today through Tuesday and Sept. 16 to 19. The “Wurstmarkt,” meaning “sausage fair,” is 600 years old. It received its name from the fact that fest goers ate enormous amounts of sausages during the event in the first part of the 19th century. However, the main attraction of the fest are 36 little wine tents called “Schubkaerchler,” or “wheelbarrows,” because vintners rolled wine barrels on wheelbarrows up to Monte Sancti Michaeli, Michelsberg hill, to quench pil-

grims’ thirst in the 15th century. Each year at the end of September on Michael’s day, pilgrims visited the little chapel on top of the hill. On the way up there, vendors sold their goods. Later, church dignitaries no longer accepted this kind of pilgrimage. Market activities were relocated to the bottom of Michelsberg, and the sausage fair was born. In 1910, city officials decided to celebrate the fest earlier in September and no longer on Michaels’ day because of better weather. The Wurstmarkt was extended by a day in 1926, by seven days 1951 and by eight days in 1965. Since 1985, the fest has been nine days long. The historical wine tents will open at 10 a.m. and the rides at noon each day. Rides will include merry-gorounds, auto scooters, a giant Ferris wheel, a rollercoaster, a haunted mansion and fast rides such as Hot Shot, The King, Take Off, Shaker and Happy Sailor. There will be food and candy booths, fest tents with live bands and a wine village with wine tents. The event’s first fireworks display called “Fire Magic at Half Time,” created by a pyro technician world champion, will be lit at 9 p.m. Tuesday. during the open house. “Different entities within the WPC displayed their equipment for the families to see and try out,” said Staff Sgt. Benjamin Seefeldt, USAFE WPC network system administrator. “Some of the things that were available was our flight simulators and constructing computers, as well as games for the kids to play.” Nolder said through events like the open house, their capabilities and support become stronger. With support and understanding from families, the WPC Airmen can focus on the mission while at work, ensuring their attention and commitment isn’t obstructed.

why their service member’s contribution is so important. “The families of the Warrior Preparation Center may not really understand what we do here,” said Capt. Sarah Nolder, U.S. Air Forces in Europe WPC flight commander. “This open house gave the families insight into what their family member’s job is. If they can understand what their loved one is doing, they can better support them, which in turn supports the success of our mission.” The WPC is made up of many different detachments. TODAY:

Penne Parmigiano & Balsamic and

Olive Oil Italian Dressing

Ingredients pasta (for 4 people) 1.5 pounds penne pasta, dried ½ cup fresh parmesan, shaved (use a knife to shave the parmesan) 2 cups cream 2 tablespoons green pesto (see recipe from August 19 edition - just delete the lime juice for this recipe) 1 tablespoon olive oil ½ tablespoon minced garlic ½ teaspoon salt for boiling pasta ¼ teaspoon ground white or black pepper Boil the pasta in salted water. Cook the pasta until it is ¾ done, a bit more than al dente. This is going to be probably around 8 minutes. Strain noodles from boiling water. In a skillet heat olive oil on medium heat. Add pasta and cream and let simmer for 3-4

minutes. Add pesto and parmesan. Let this simmer for 1-2 minutes, then add salt and pepper to taste. You can serve this with a nice ciabatta bread and tossed salad with balsamic and olive oil dressing for a nice quick meal.

Ingredients dressing (for 4 people) 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons good quality extra virgin olive oil 4 tablespoons water ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon white pepper ½ - ¼ teaspoon sugar ½ cup finely diced red or purple onions Fresh basil to taste Mix all ingredients and drizzle on salad. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is made by only using the pressure of the stones pressing on the olives to extract the olive oil. No heat is involved. This takes hours. If heat is used to extract the oil you, then it is robust olive oil. Love our recipes? Let us hear about it! Contact us at ads@KaiserslauternAmerican.com for feedback or recipe suggestions. We would love to hear from you!

THE DRAMATIC BURG ELTZ

Story courtesy of MilitaryInGermany.com read more at the http://militaryingermany.com/the-dramatic-burg-eltz I remember when we first moved to Germany, I found myself mesmerized by castles. I actually saw a Facebook post where someone mentioned that they had lived in Europe for over two years and they were tired of castles. What? I was seriously offended. How can you ever see too many castles?

Most Impressive Fast forward three years and I get it. However, a visit from my daughter prompted a day trip to a medieval castle nestled in the hills above the Mosel River between Koblenz and Trier. Burg Eltz is owned by a branch of the same family (the Eltz family) that lived there in the 12th century and 33 generations ago. Burg Eltz is the castle that has impressed me the most and is now my favorite castle in Germany. Even in

a region where it is almost impossible not to stumble over some castle ruins, this castle really stands out. Not many things are more associated with Europe than castles; and after visiting Burg Eltz, I have to say it’s one of the best I have ever seen. Why? Well, let me tell you why. That WOW Factor Burg Eltz sits in a lush green valley, hidden away from main road traffic. It is the first castle that has ever actually taken my breath away as we rounded a corner in the shuttle and got a look at the view. Unlike the vast majority of castles along the Mosel and Rhine Rivers, this was one of the few that has never been destroyed or badly damaged. Burg Eltz’s setting is simply stunning, as it sits perched on a rock and surrounded by thick-wooded hills and the babbling Elzbach creek on three sides. This was apparently a strategy, since the location was perfect for exacting tolls on passing traders, which provided much of the early wealth to Burg Eltz’s residents. Getting There You can reach the castle on foot by the scenic fifteen-minute walk through the woods from the parking lot or taking a much longer hike

Photo by Jaroslav Franicsko / Shutterstock.com

from a nearby town. On the other hand, you can cheat like we did and take the shuttle. Either way, you will have a “wow” moment when you round the corner and see Burg Eltz lying before you.

tours include a visit to the rustic medieval kitchen and stately Knight’s Hall, where the families gathered for large feasts and conversation.

Inside the Castle Walls Once inside the castle walls, the main courtyard is a hodgepodge of design styles, reflecting the fact that three different branches of the family once resided in the structure together.
