RAB inspiring next generation of service members to “Fly Like a Girl”

On March 20, I had the privilege of participating in Ramstein Air Base’s annual Fly Like a Girl event, where local missions are planned, flown, executed, and displayed by women, for women. This event showcases women working in roles normally seen as maledominated, hoping to inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

Observers witnessed the planning, organizing, preparing, executing, de-briefing, and analysis of the mission and flights, commonly referred to as sorties. The mission commander illustrated the tactical picture and the observers saw the operational picture come together, as a variety of functions collabo-

rated to make the mission possible with our mission and joint partners.

To fly like a girl, the Air Force meets operations where they occur and executes the directed mission regardless of circumstances, cultural or societal expectations, or false assumptions.

Women work HARD. Not because the job is challenging (though it can be, at times), but to prove our value, worthiness, knowledge, and experience to others.

The diversity and equal rights arguments levied are tiresome, and old. This is not about taking a stand for or against diversity or equal rights. It is setting an example, expanding the possibilities of what we can do, and what we will continue to pursue. Highlighting what women can and choose to do shows this generation — and the next — what is possible.

To see someone who looks like you, doing something you want to do, and maybe did not think was possible, stays with a person. In today’s world of influencers and online pressure, girls and women come away from social media with distorted beliefs and assumptions. Events like Fly Like a Girl provide them an opportunity to see women in action who contribute to something greater than themselves.

From maintaining aircraft, safely pumping clean fuel, managing the airfield and controlling the air space, to medical teams ready to respond, loadmasters handling cargo and passengers, pilots who fly, jumpers who drop, and so many more — Fly Like a Girl shows the world that women play essential roles with heavy responsibilities in every capacity.

Women have been a part of

history just as much as men have, from life-changing inventions, to revolutions, to combat environments — just with less coverage and less credit. We have advocated for ourselves, by ourselves, and in the 300,000 years of humanity. Only in the last 100 years (give or take a few) have laws and recognition started to change. All of us have stories to tell, but the women on my flight have amazing stories. Women who, in a career shift, enlisted months before the cut-off age of 40 to serve — because why not?

Women who wanted out of their small towns and discover who they could become. Women who, heartbroken, enlisted on a whim and changed the trajectory of their planned future. Women who fought against height standards to serve, who worked to physically stretch themselves out to qualify.

Women who joined to serve, to help, and to push themselves.

These women, and so many others like them, embody Mary Oliver’s famous quote: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

History and the public like to label and point out women’s firsts, women’s accomplishments. But, instead of categories like a female pilot, a female maintainer, a female historian. We prefer the descriptions of a skilled pilot, an expert maintainer, a fantastic historian to focus on greatness earned, not bestowed or granted because of gender. We are great Air Force members who just happen to be female. Editor’s

The 37th Airlift Squadron hosted the event with 15 units from Ramstein AB providing demonstrations, displays and a formation of four C-130J Super Hercules aircraft for students, celebrating women in various Air Force career fields.

“The biggest thing for me is being able to include young men and women and showing them the opportunities that are out there,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Kaylynn Butchko, 37th Airlift Squadron pilot. “If you set your mind to it, you can achieve anything in these fantastic career fields.”

This is the largest Fly Like a Girl event that Ramstein has hosted. Previous years featured female aircrews, but this year’s event included a career fair to help inspire students to pursue science, technology, engineering and math in the military.

“A lot of our girls don’t know what’s out there for them,” said Michele Dubé, Baumholder Middle and High School teacher. “We have girls who are coming here specifically to see what the Air Force might be able to offer them.”

Displays included aircraft tours, maintainer for a day activities, selfdefense, patrol vehicles, virtual fire trainer with extinguisher, spraying a low-pressure water hose, a K-loader and more.

During the event, approximately 120 paratroopers jumped from four C-130Js to the Ramstein AB drop zone. The jump included a jump team of nine women from the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, 435th Air Expeditionary Wing, 86th Operations Support Squadron, the 5th Quartermaster Company and the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

All four aircraft were operated by all-female aircrews. One of the four aircraft was launched by an all-female team of 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron maintainers.

“I’m glad to be a part of it,” said Willis. “I think it’s a great way for other career fields to share what they do with each other, and for the students to see what we do — especially as women in the Air Force.”

Dubé also expressed deep appre-

ciation for the event. Many of her students attended the event for the opportunity to visit the Air Force Academy booth and talk to recruiters.

“My message to the ladies is don’t let anyone discourage you from setting your goals,” said Butchko. “Dream as high as you possibly can.”

On- and off-base clothes dryer safety

Doing laundry is most likely part of your everyday routine. But did you know how critical taking care of your clothes dryer is? With a few simple safety tips, you can help prevent dryer related issues.

There are two different types of dryers used on-base and off-base depending on your location and type of home. Condensed water and vented dryers.

» For condensed water dryers, ensure you empty the condensed water container after every drying cycle. Condensed water can cause health problems in people and animals. Please don’t drink it! These dryers work more efficiently in cooler environments, so if possible, try to keep the room nice and cool by opening a window.

» For vented dryers, check and clean the flexible hose connected to your dryer for lint accumulation at least once a month.

More safety tips:

» Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer.

» Regularly clean the lint filter.

» Never place plastic articles in the dryer.

» Clean clothes dryer lint trap after each use.

» Keep the area around your dryer clear of clutter like boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing, etc.

» Clothes that have come in contact with flammable substances, like gasoline, paint thinner, or similar solvents should be laid outside to dry first; then they can be washed and dried as usual.

» Check the outdoor flap on vented dryers to ensure it is not blocked or covered.

» Turn the dryer off if you leave your home or when you go to bed.

If you notice that it takes longer than usual for your clothes to dry, please check your lint filter first, and if this doesn’t resolve the problem, please call our Housing Maintenance Contractor at 06371-463-9510

Fact:

The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failing to clean or maintain them properly.

Female jumpmaster inspires greatness, serves as testament to women before her

In pursuit of a change, she applied to be a National Airborne Operations Center Security team member, and was accepted.

Throughout history, women have experienced diverse hardships and have fought to overcome them.

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jacklyn Edgmond, 435th Contingency Response Group airborne jumpmaster, is one woman who has traveled the path carved by these resilient women in hopes of creating a brighter future for herself, and empowering others to follow their hearts despite being underestimated.

“There will always be people in the world who have their own personal beliefs and opinions on the female role,” Edgmond said. “That has only encouraged me to prove them wrong.”

Edgmond grew up in Ellisville, Missouri, with her older brother and was raised by her mother. She enjoyed exploring the outdoors and being in the sunshine. Because of her love for the outdoors she began competing in track and field, and cross-country in middle school. Shortly after high school, her interest shifted to strength training.

After graduating high school, she continued her education at a local community college while working a full-time job. However, Edgmond said she still felt unsure of where her future would lead her.

Knowing she wanted to do something bigger with her life, she leaned on the one person whose wisdom and personal experience most influenced her — her grandfather.

“My grandfather is the person I look up to most,” Edgmond said. “He served in the Air Force for 30 years and told me about all the opportunities the military gave him. His experience and passion for serving his country impacted my decision to join and become the only member in my immediate family to currently be serving.”

On March 17, 2015, Edgmond enlisted into the Air Force as a security forces Airman. At the start of her career, she worked 12-hour night shifts, checking ID cards at installation access points and providing security for aircraft on the flightline.

missioned officers.”

“This was the first time I did something out of my comfort zone,” Edgmond said. “While a NAOCS defender, I was given the opportunity to travel all over the world and provide fly-away security for the Secretary of Defense. This experience fueled my desire to continue to test myself.”

In 2019, she was assigned to the 435th Security Forces Squadron at Ramstein AB. Upon arriving, she was placed as an instructor for the Readiness Training Center where she taught pre-deployment training to defenders across the U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa. Two years later she moved into the Phoenix First in Security Team, and is now the team chief over 26 defenders — and the only woman on the team.

Edgmond is also the only female airborne jumpmaster currently in the 435th CRG. This achievement and her skills were recognized during the third annual Fly Like A Girl event on March 20, hosted by the 37th Airlift Squadron at Ramstein AB, during which she led an all-female jump from a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft as the jumpmaster.

“It was an honor to be able to lead the all-female pass of jumpers during Fly Like A Girl,” Edgmond said. “It was an empowering experience, and a reminder of how we need to break down barriers and pave the way for all the little girls who will one day grow up and what to be just like us.”

Over 900 students across the Kaiserslautern Military Community attended the third annual Fly Like A Girl event, which featured an allfemale aircrew flight as well as a career fair to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

“Throughout my 9 years I’ve been enlisted, I’ve grown tremendously both professionally and personally,” Edgmond said. “They say, ‘with rank comes more responsibility,’ and that responsibility is taking care of the airmen below me and ensuring they’re being developed as future non-com-

Edgmond said she always tries to be there for the people around her, and it is important to look at the bigger picture when guiding her Airmen. Her leadership style is doing-by-example and leaning on her people for ideas and suggestions to make decisions for the team.

“I admire Tech. Sgt. Edgmond because she is compassionate, and she not only is easy to talk to, but she gets to know her Airmen on a personal level,” said Senior Airman Dakota Spikes, 435th Security Forces Squadron contingency response team leader. “She is a leader who leads from the front. She won’t just tell her troops to do something and not be out there doing it with them.”

Her job has allowed her to work with a variety of Airmen, and her impact on them matters, Edgmond said.

“My Airmen are a reminder to me that someone is always watching and could be looking up to you,” Edgmond said. “Experiencing that myself has only motivated me to be a better leader, mentor and supervisor while serving in the Air Force.”

Being a woman in a predominately male career field has posed a few challenges, Edgmond said. However, having a strong team around her has helped her feel supported.

“I’ve been very fortunate to be surrounded by many like-minded defenders who have motivated me to succeed in every direction in life I’ve pushed myself in,” Edgmond said. “I want women to understand, you will reach points of discouragement, but never let it throw you off your tracks.”

Edgmond believes leaning on your team and building each other up regardless of your differences is important to maintaining a strong team dynamic.

“Keep your head up, eyes open and push forward,” she said. “Break through barriers and pave the way for all the little girls who will one day grow up and want to be just like you.”

Edgmond’s journey through the U.S. Air Force is one of many, but it is a testament to women paving the way for progress.

Renewing bonds: Family reconnects at 4th ASOG Marriage Retreat

In the picturesque setting of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, amidst snow-capped mountain peaks and Bavarian countryside, a U.S Air Force first sergeant and his wife embarked on a journey to strengthen their marriage.

The couple attended a marriage retreat held by the 4th Air Support Operation Group at Edelweiss Lodge and Resort from Feb. 29 to March 3.

Reflecting on the positive impact the previous retreat had on them, they returned with a shared commitment to deepen their bond.

“Last year’s retreat was so incredible, we had to return,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Curtis Cain, 7th Combat Weather Squadron first sergeant. “We came to the retreat last year with uncertainty, not knowing what to anticipate, but the transformative experience fostered by the group made a profound impact on my marriage.”

For the Cain family, the retreat provided opportunities for meaningful connection, both within their own family and other couples who attended. There was also time to spend with Capt. Rotimi Adedokun, 4th ASOG unit chaplain, who led the retreat.

“The retreat was structured in a way that allowed us to really connect as a family,” said Cain. “We had plenty of time to spend with each other and with the chaplain,

learning ways to strengthen our relationships from his seminar.”

The chaplain’s seminar was called “Reconnect.” There were four sessions of the seminar over the course of the retreat.

“Our ‘Reconnect’ sessions were meticulously designed to guide couples through a journey of selfdiscovery and mutual understanding,” said Adedokun. “Through interactive exercises and heartfelt discussions, we aimed to not only uncover hidden barriers but also provide practical tools for couples to navigate challenges and strengthen their bond. Our curriculum focused on fostering communication and empathy, empowering couples to cultivate lasting intimacy and resilience in their relationships.”

A distinguishing feature of this year’s retreat aside from its focus on enhancing spousal relationships was nurturing parental bonds with their children. Cain emphasized how the retreat helped him to “sharpen the sword” of his marriage and further strengthen his connections with his children.

“The first retreat really helped improve communication between my wife and I, especially since English isn’t her first language,” said Cain. “Being in Garmisch, our favorite area in Germany, made it even more special.”

The allure of GarmischPartenkirchen, combined with the intentional programming of the retreat, created an ideal environ-

ment for personal and relational growth. Cain was grateful for the retreat’s curriculum, noting its blend of structured learning and valuable family time.

“You don’t need to have any problems to go to the retreat,” said Cain. “It enhances an alreadystrong marriage; It did for mine.”

As the Cain family returns to their duties at U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden, they carry with them a renewed sense of connection and purpose.

Cain’s group commander emphasized the importance of such efforts.

“It’s crucial to prioritize initiatives like the Marriage Retreat for our Airmen and their families,” said Col. Jeffrey Mack, 4th ASOG commander. “Maintaining strong, healthy relationships at home is fundamental to the well-being of our Airmen and their ability to execute the mission effectively. When there’s peace and stability in their personal lives, our Airmen can focus wholeheartedly on their duties, knowing that their families are supported and thriving. Investing in programs that strengthen family bonds not only enhances our Airmen’s resilience but also contributes to the overall success of our mission.”

While the Cain family is only one of the couples who attended, their journey stands as a testament to the impact of morale events like these; a path leading to healthy personal lives and successfully accomplishing the mission.

Bauernstube Grant’s ride

The 76th Airlift Squadron came together for the annual Grant’s Ride memorial event March 17 at Ramstein Air Base.

This event serves as a tribute to former 76th AS communications systems operator Staff Sgt. Grant Davis who passed away in a cycling accident in 2016, and aims to promote bicycle safety within the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

According to his squadron; during his five-year tenure at Ramstein AB, Davis was renowned for his unwavering

commitment, dedication and compassion, both within and outside the squadron.

Since Davis’s untimely passing, the event has provided a means for his family, friends, and fellow service members to honor his memory, and celebrate his passion for cycling.

“Grant’s father, Jeff, came out in 2015 to do a three country bike tour with Grant, through Switzerland, Belgium and Germany,” said Lt. Col. John Field, 76th AS commander. “Grant was so excited for his dad to come out. That’s all he would talk about for the longest time.”

This year, participants of Grant’s Ride embarked on a 15-mile journey, featuring a poignant stop at the site of Davis’s accident. They placed flowers at the memorial and observed a moment of silence in his honor. No matter the circumstances, Davis’ passion for cycling would always persist.

“Grant wouldn’t have cared if it was sunny out or not,” said Field. “He would have rode if it was rainy, snowy or any type of weather. That was who he was.”

The event concluded with Field’s sharing passionate and loving words for Davis and a prayer.

700th CONS, the procurement people

Many organizations are referred to as operating like a machine. They work day-in and day-out as the gears and cogs turn to achieve the individual purposes of serving the larger apparatus. With all the nuts and bolts and other parts of the machine operating at a fast pace, it requires a lubricant to continue functioning properly. This ingredient is simple and obvious, but absolutely critical in the overall success of the mission. This machine is the 86th Airlift Wing and the lubricant is cold hard cash. Who provides this essential service to the 86th AW? That would be the men and women of the 700th Contracting Squadron.

Contracting squadrons around

the U.S. Air Force prepare, negotiate and award contracts to different companies to ensure mission essential services are able to carry out their duties and be paid and guarantee money is spent in an appropriate way to verify they avoid negligent or unethical use of U.S. government funds.

The 700th CONS originated as the 7000th Procurement Squadron in 1974 and throughout its history they have been responsible for procuring most of the materials needed to accomplish the various missions for units around the Kaiserslautern Military Community and Ramstein Air Base.

“Our mission is one that every unit on base relies on,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Ronald Abbate, 700th CONS operations superintendent. “We have our hands in pretty much every organization

on base. We have to get them the stuff they need to do their jobs and accomplish the mission.”

Abbate emphasized the critical role their mission plays in supporting every unit on the base, underscoring their broad reach and essential function.

“We are responsible for a lot of units all over the place,” Alvarez said. “We have to ensure each and every unit is supplied. That can be difficult at times, especially at the end of the fiscal year. We juggle a lot of different requests and it doesn’t matter how difficult it is, we still get it done.”

At the heart of the squadron’s mission is adaptability. In an ever-evolving landscape, they must remain agile and responsive, capable of navigating complex regulations and swiftly adjusting to shifting priorities. Whether it’s sourcing critical medical supplies

during humanitarian missions or acquiring cutting-edge technology to enhance combat capabilities, the 700th CONS stands ready to meet the Air Force’s diverse needs with precision and efficiency.

“Our customers’ needs are always changing,” said Staff Sgt. Vida Alvarez, 700th CONS contracting specialist. “Since our customers’ requirements are changing we have to also change our processes. We have to be flexible to do our jobs or else we cannot provide the services the base needs.”

As requirements shift, she stresses the importance of corresponding changes in processes to ensure the squadron remains responsive and capable of meeting the base’s demands. Building on this sentiment, Abbate underscores the significance of diversity within the squadron. Highlighting the array of cultures and personalities

present among their team, Abbate suggests that diversity serves as a catalyst for innovation.

“We have a very diverse group of people here from various backgrounds,” Abbate said. “This is critical for us because you never know who can have the next big idea that can help us navigate an issue and become a new standard. We are always open to new ideas and fostering an environment where our Airmen can grow and become the leaders of the future the Air Force needs.”

The 700th CONS epitomizes resilience, adaptability, and unwavering dedication in ensuring the operational success of the 86th AW. Their tireless efforts behind the scenes underscore the intricate interplay of individuals and units that collectively uphold the mission and project power across the globe.

Baumholder Military Youth of the Year to compete for European title in Naples, Italy

The Baumholder Youth Program, Child and Youth Services Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation, recently named their Boys and Girls Clubs of America local Military Youth of the Year.

Keandre Anderson, a member of the Youth Program, was selected by a panel of judges to represent the Baumholder program and will now compete at the European level at the BGCA event held in Naples, Italy, Aprill 18-21.

“Keandre has been in our Baumholder CYS programs for 13 years,” said Ryan Flynn, Youth Programs director, Baumholder CYS, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. “He is kind and friendly, always open and looking to help peers or introduce new people to programs and activities he enjoys.”

Keandre is involved in soccer and robotics and, according to Flynn, he has a love of all things technology and plans to pursue his education in a tech related field.

Flynn added that Keandre is a resilient military youth and

a great example of the positive impact CYS programs can have on youth who are looking to do great things in their future.

“He’s done the work, and through the BGCA’s MYOY program, he’ll be able to tell his story on a greater stage and expand his impact,” said Flynn.

The annual BGCA MYOY program seeks to discover youth leaders from across the entire BGCA movement to serve as brand ambassadors for BGCA.

Youth members must have a good knowledge and involvement in BGCA programs through militaryconnected youth centers.

“Youth members must write four essays about what matters to them, their personal growth, their youth center experience,” said Flynn. They must complete two community letters of recommendation, prepare a 3-minute speech, sit through an interview panel, and prepare a professional resume and cover letter.”

This process demands a significant amount of time and effort from youth who are already balancing school, sports, and other activities, making it a major commitment, said Flynn.

“Keandre was the only youth to finish the entire MYOY process/packet for Baumholder. The European event in Naples will feature approximately 10-15 youth from around all branches of service,” Flynn said. “We often practice Keandre’s speech and interview questions on weekends and nights, so he keeps his ‘game face’ on!”

Flynn contacted Liberty Fejeran, the president of the Baumholder Community Spouse Club, to inquire whether the club would consider providing financial support for Keandre. The BCSC was more than happy to assist and provided a $300 grant to cover the cost of his new suit and shoes for the Naples event.

The Landstuhl Youth Center will host an event on April 5 at 5 p.m. to kick off the Month of the Military Child. During the event, Col. Reid Furman, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander, will sign an official proclamation designating April as the Month of the Military Child. We invite everyone to attend and show their support for our exceptional military children.

Celebrating leaders in Air Force

U.S. Air Force Airmen ruck to celebrate Women’s

Family Member Connections Project.

An under-desk treadmill quietly hums in the background of keyboard chattering from above in the office of U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Juana Schoonmaker, 86th Airlift Wing Ramstein Law Center noncommissioned officer in charge of military justice. Her steady strides allow her to keep her balance while she works, unruffled by the moving belt beneath her feet. Towering stacks of documents are neatly arranged on a table nearby, set in a backdrop of memoirs from prior duty stations and artwork from her children. The most recent item to be put on display in Schoonmaker’s office is a glass trophy, indicating she is the recipient of the 86th Airlift Wing 2023 NCO of the year award.

Paralegals hold an instrumental role in the U.S. Air Force, providing critical support in all judicial and nonjudicial matters. This supporting role is often executed behind the scenes in a position with low visibility.

“I was shocked,” said Schoonmaker. “There are so many people doing amazing things throughout the wing. It’s humbling to know that I was among great peers in competing for this award.”

Schoonmaker has demonstrated a high degree of commitment to service and excellence leading to this award nomination. In 2023, she was put in charge of two sections of the 86th AW Ramstein Law Center. Both roles, which are typically each held by senior noncommissioned officers, she single handedly filled as a technical sergeant.

Her dedication and drive have resulted in many other impressive accomplishments including her efforts that revolutionized training for paralegals Air Force wide, and her efforts founding the Joint Exceptional

Schoonmaker helped obtain $150,000 in funding to improve assistance and inclusivity for Exceptional Family Member Program families United States European Command wide. She did this all while working towards earning her second master’s degree.

The list of Schoonmaker’s notable achievements continues on, but one of her attributes that outshines any trophy on display is her passion for the people around her.

On several occasions, Schoonmaker and her family spent the majority of their weekends driving to other cities to support Senior Airman Nicholas Mendez, 86th AW Ramstein Law Center general law paralegal, while he played baseball for a local team.

“It meant a lot to me as a single Airman living alone overseas for the first time,” said Mendez. “She showed me how it feels to have leadership that deeply cares about their Airmen.”

The core values of the U.S. Air Force serve a moral compass for Airmen as they navigate their military careers. A large part of the value “integrity first,” is accountability. Schoonmaker feels supporting Airmen while hold-

ing them accountable is a valuable skill that will garnish mutual respect and teach discipline.

“Juana isn’t shy about advocating for her Airmen and prioritizes their success, wants, and needs,” said Senior Master Sgt. Dane Ryan, 86th Airlift Wing Ramstein Law Center superintendent. “You see a lot of people do this, but where she shines is the fact that she doesn’t let anyone skate by. If you’re working with Juana, you’ve got to be on your game because she will be, too.”

Schoonmaker embodies all the core values: integrity first, service before self and excellence in all we do. Her devotion to her job, team and the community, continues to propel her and those around her forward.

“As a senior noncommissioned officer, I look for qualities in my NCOs like confidence, competence, respect, humility, accountability and trustworthiness,” said Ryan. “Juana has every one of those traits.”

For Schoonmaker, working hard and caring for others comes naturally. She encourages leaders at all levels to take care of themselves, their people, and their mission to fly, fight, and win.

ABC IN KMC: Healing with horses

A unique event unfolded in the village of Hütschenhausen, near Ramstein Air Base in late February. The Bund Deutscher EinsatzVeteranen and Mirascon Insurance Agency hosted the event for German veterans and their American counterparts in the spirit of camaraderie and healing. This event, set against the backdrop of shared military experiences, aims to foster understanding, support and a sense of community. One of the remarkable features of this event is the emphasis on rehabilitation, with a particular focus on the therapeutic benefits of horse-assisted activities for wounded soldiers.

The Bund Deutscher EinsatzVeteranen plays a crucial role in connecting German veterans who have served in various deployments around the world. Established as a support network, the association aims to address the unique challenges faced by these veterans upon their return. The German-American brunch was a testament to the organization’s commitment to fostering international bonds and promoting healing among veterans.

U.S. veterans have found supporting agencies, such as The American Legion, with its European commander Robert Gray, and the Wounded Warrior Project. Being able to connect with others who faced similar challenges and trauma can be a crucial part of healing

and moving forward. Especially for family members, who are often left alone, it would be great to meet others affected who understand and can fathom the situation, and then engage in exchange and mutual support.

Support for German soldiers and their families is rather young and the Bund Deutscher EinsatzVeteranen was founded in 2010 upon an initiative to accompany and assist veterans and their families in their struggle facing traumatic experiences during deployments and combat. The association offers family weekend events, such as wandering with alpacas, climbing or just barbequing in a casual setting. It is open for any veteran, regardless of nationality.

Bernhard Drescher, German veteran from Berlin and Chairman of the Association, was pleased about the overwhelming outcome of the meeting and said that it had hit just the right nerve, in implementing a German-American initiative to deepen connections of veterans of both nations. A large number of U.S. veterans attended the event and valued their opportunity to meet German comrades.

A further unique aspect of the German-American get-together was the incorporation of horse therapy as a rehabilitation tool for wounded soldiers. Equine-assisted therapy has proven to be effective in addressing physical and psychological trauma. The presence of horses provides a therapeutic environment where veterans can reconnect with themselves and others.

Horses are known for their

intuitive ability to sense emotions, making them ideal companions for those dealing with the aftermath of trauma. The calming and grounding effect of interacting with these majestic animals can contribute significantly to the healing process. Activities such as grooming, riding, and simply being in the presence of horses offer wounded soldiers a holistic approach to rehabilitation.

Thais Krings and Ursula Weishaupt from Wermelskirchen traveled to Hütschenhausen with their two therapeutic horses Ari and Amira to demonstrate how riding therapy is designed and how contact with a horse as co-therapist can have a positive effect on the psyche of the person suffering from PTSD. The two experienced therapists are convinced of the theory “two legs carry your body, four legs carry your soul” (author unknown).

The Bund Deutscher

EinsatzVeteranen and Mirascon are planning further meetings in the future and a field service, organized by the Reservist Association Westpfalz, under the motto “We who served” is scheduled for April 27, starting at 10:30 a.m. There will be drinks, a barbecue and a church service with the blessing starting at 1:30 p.m. with the blessing of motorcycles and their riders at RK-Heim Hütschenhausen, Steinbruch. Event info: https:// www.reservistenverband.de/, or for general information, visit: https:// www.veteranenverband.de/ or contact: office@veteranenverband. de (English spoken).

APRIL 14, 2.30/4.30 P.M., OTTERBERG

Experience a unique tour that brings history to life in a fascinating way. This covered wagon tour takes you through the monastery in Otterberg on a rustic horse-drawn covered wagon. Using virtual reality goggles, participants immerse themselves in times long past: from the time of the monastery in 1254 to the Walloon town in 1615. The wind in your face, the jerking of the wagon and the clattering of the horses’ hooves allow you to immerse yourself in those times. The highlight of the tour is the atmosphere of the imposing Otterberg Abbey Church with its exciting history. Here, participants experience history live - no longer virtually, but with the real, massive, yellow sandstones that characterize this building. English tours are available on April 14, May 27 and June 22 and start at 2:30 or 4:30 p.m. Individual appointments can be arranged for groups of 9 to max. 11. For further information and booking, visit: https://www.otterbach-otterberg.de/tourismus or Tel. 06301-607800.

The field service will start at 1:30 p.m. For more information visit: https://www.reservistenverband.de/. Also see ABC in KMC on Page 15

GARTENMARKT

APRIL 28, 10 A.M. – 6 P.M., ABTEIKIRCHE PLAZA, OTTERBERG

Sixty-four vendors will present plants and flowers for garden lovers, handcrafted items out of clay, wood, stone, metal, textile and paper. There will be an information booth about wild bees, culinary delights, a children’s program and the monastery herb and flower garden (behind the church) will be open for visitors. There will be an organ concert at 12:30 a.m., the Blue Light Band Band of the Polizei Presidium Ludwigshafen will perform at 4 p.m., and Günther Mannweiler will entertain visitors with music in the historic district.

STREET FOOD FESTIVAL

APRIL 26-28, CITY CENTER, LANDSTUHL

Enjoy a weekend with your favorites foods and try something new. There will be food trucks with American, German, Mexican favorites, and sweet and hearty desserts to go along with them. Let your mouth water as your meal is freshly prepared right on the spot!

TAG DER OFFENEN TÜR POLIZEIINSPEKTION (OPEN HOUSE)

APRIL 28, 10 A.M.-5 P.M., BAHNSTR. 54, LANDSTUHL

Have you ever wondered what a typical police inspection in Germany is like? Now is your chance to peek behind the scenes at the open house and learn about the responsibilities and of duties of the German Polizei and “friend and helpers.” A great opportunity, and without getting into any trouble!

feel of the city that makes me think it is alive. Berlin is a gigantic, beautiful living thing which affects all those who walk its sprawling streets in some minute way. Berlin may be crowded and sometimes a little clustered too, but it is alive! Here are five reasons you’ll love Berlin, too.

1. Brandenburg Gate

The Brandenburg Gate, the icon of the city of Berlin, is perhaps the most visited landmark in Germany. The gate has played many important roles during the 300 years since it was first built. It has been considered a symbol for war, peace, terror, victory and unity, as well as it is an embodiment of change and the adaptability for Germans.

The citizens of Germany hold it in very high esteem and with good reason. It is where Ronald Reagan said the famous words “Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” I personally went out to see it at night; the lighting brings the statues atop the gate to life. The history of the place is palpable, and the very air is thick with it. Definitely something you should make time for.

2. Museumsinsel

Berlin’s richness in history is clearly reflected by the large number of museums that are sprawled across the beautiful city. The most important museums are all conveniently located in one spot called “Museumsinsel.” The Museum Island on the Spree River is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The museums here are full of interesting and important historical artifacts from antiquities like the famous Ishtar gate of ancient Babylon and the bust of Egyptian queen Nefertiti. Berlin’s Museum of Natural History has perhaps the world’s largest mounted dinosaur skeleton. I found the trip extremely educational and interesting, an enlightening experience. I took away much from just one visit.

3. Fernsehturm the TV Tower

Fernsehturm was built in the 1960’s in the section of the city that was once called East Berlin. The TV tower is the tallest structure in Germany with a breathtaking height of 368 meters! The observation deck at the top of the tower provides a beautiful view over the city of Berlin, and on a clear day the visibility from the observation deck is said to be over 42 kilometers.

You may have been told that the Fernsehturm is called “Telespargel” or maybe you’ve heard another strange nickname. I visited the tower multiple times as I simply couldn’t get enough of the Berlin skyline. It has a vantage point like none other.

4. Food

Ah, German cuisine is truly a delight! The first thing you need to try in Berlin is Currywurst. Currywurst is the name used for a fast-food made up of slices of delicious German hot sausages, seasoned with ketchup and curry powder. It was invented in Berlin and is said to be the most popular fast food in Germany. I personally went to Konnopke’s in Prenzlauer Berg and I found it better than most other joints in the city.

5. The Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall holds an important position in history and was the famous symbol and passage between West and East Berlin during the Cold War. Sometimes called

Checkpoint Charlie, it is said that it was used by many German Democratic Republic or GDR citizens to go from East to West Berlin.

Also, the famous Berlin Crisis standoff between U.S. and Soviet tanks took place at Checkpoint Charlie in 1961. And at “Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, Mauermuseum” you can see some of the most interesting escape vehicles used while the country was divided, including the one-man submarine and some other exhibits that document the time during the division.

Getting there

Berlin is between a 6 to 7 hour drive from Kaiserslautern, Wiesbaden and Stuttgart. The most relaxing way to travel is to let Deutsche Bahn do the work and jump on a train instead.
