NATO, Allies conduct long-range drills testing interoperability over Romania

NATO Allies conducted verification testing above Romania on how their air assets work together to protect NATO airspace with Integrated Air and Missile Defence assets, Aug. 24.

The verification test saw fighter and airto-air refueling aircraft from France, Spain and Türkiye come together over Romania, improving the readiness and interoperability of NATO IAMD alongside additional assets such as surface-based air and missile defence systems. During the mission, NATO Allied Air Command via the Combined Air Operations Centre at Torrejón, Spain, oversaw the procedural test analysing how these assets can be brought to work together efficiently.

“NATO IAMD provides a highly responsive, time-critical and persistent capability to achieve a desired level of control of the air, this ensures the Alliance is able to achieve freedom of action to conduct the full range of its missions, safeguarding and

protecting Alliance territory,” said Brigadier General Christoph Pliet, Deputy Chief of Staff Operations at Allied Air Command. “This mission was extremely beneficial for all participating air forces to execute and achieve integration and interoperability,” he added.

Once activated, SBAMD units provide their data into the NATO IAMD network which comprises national and NATO-provided sensors, command and control assets, and weapons systems. This joint and combined defensive network compiles the data received into one recognised air and missile picture.

“The participating fighter jets operated out of their home or deployed bases and flew into Romania with the help of critical airto-air refueling aircraft and integrated with

in-place SBAMD units. This complex mission demonstrated that NATO and its Allies are capable of conducting long-range flexible deterrence options in addition to maintaining an overall posture ready to deter and defend every inch of NATO territory,” General Pliet added.

NATO IAMD is a defensive component of the Alliance’s Joint Air Power, which aims to ensure the stability and security of NATO airspace by coordinating, controlling and exploiting the air domain. It is an essential, continuous mission in peacetime, crisis and conflict, conducted using a 360-degree approach across NATO territory, and is prepared to address the full spectrum of threats.

On Thursday, Sep. 14, 11 a.m., all 16 federal states will test their government warning system, including warning devices such as city sirens and loudspeaker trucks. A test notification will also be sent out through the German government warning application NINA (German Federal Emergency Information and News App). The goal of this exercise is to familiarize citizens with the emergency alert system used by German federal or local authorities to notify the public during major incidents, such as natural disasters, bomb disposals, and other security incidents.

US will train Ukrainian F-16 pilots, ground crews

The Defense Department will begin training Ukrainians to fly and maintain F-16 fighter jets in the coming months, Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said today.

The training is expected to begin in October at the Morris Air National Guard Base in Tucson,

Arizona, and will be facilitated by the Air National Guard’s 162nd Wing.

The U.S.-led training is “in support of the international effort to develop and strengthen Ukraine’s long-term defenses,” Ryder said.

The Netherlands and Denmark have announced their intentions to make F-16 aircraft from their fleets available to Ukraine.

Secretary of State Antony

Blinken signaled the United States’ willingness to approve the thirdparty transfer of the U.S.-made F-16s to Ukraine in a letter to his European counterparts last week.

“The training provided by the United States will complement the F-16 pilot and maintenance training that’s already underway in Europe and further deepens our support of the F-16 training coalition led by Denmark and the

Netherlands,” Ryder said. “Moving forward we will remain in close consultation with the Danes, the Dutch and other allies to ensure U.S. training complements the broader coalition training efforts.”

Ryder added that by announcing the training, the U.S. is preempting any training capacity constraints in Denmark and the Netherlands’ training pipeline to ensure the aircraft are fielded to Ukraine as quickly as possible.

He said Ukraine will ultimately determine the number of pilots that will require the training.

During a briefing last week, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said U.S. approval for the transfer would come after consultation with Congress and after completion of training for Ukrainian pilots on the aircraft.

Ryder said the complete training pipeline would likely take several months, depending upon the pilots’ proficiency coming into the course.

“Part of this training will be assessing the individual pilots’ skill level, which will help to determine how long that training will last,” he said. “Your basic, new F-16 pilot with not a lot of training on the U.S. side, that training typically lasts about eight months.”

That training includes a series of courses ranging from basic flight training to instruction on fighter fundamentals, weapons employment, combat maneuvering and tactical intercepts among other concepts.

He said training for more experienced pilots could be completed in about five months.

Beyond flight training, Ryder said the F-16s require significant logistics and maintenance training for ground support personnel that ensures the aircrafts remain combat capable.

Prior to flight training, the pilots will receive language training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, beginning in September.

The language training will ensure that all pilots have sufficient language skills to be able to fully comprehend the “complexities and specialized English required to fly the aircraft,” Ryder said.

The announcement further underscores the United States’ long-term solidarity with Ukraine as it defends itself from Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III highlighted that commitment earlier today in a statement marking Ukraine’s 32nd anniversary of its independence.

“The Ukrainian people have inspired the world with their courage and resolve to defend their right to live in a sovereign, democratic and free country,” he said.

“Today, as Ukraine commemorates another year of independence, the United States remains steadfast in our commitment to ensure that it can celebrate many more,” he said. “We will support Ukraine for as long as it takes in its fight for its security and freedom.”

Breaking ground, breaking a sweat: Rheinland-Pfalz soldiers first to conquer ACFT in state-of-the-art functional fitness training center

Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz and the 624th Movement Control Detachment, conducted the Army Combat Fitness Test using the recently upgraded Functional Fitness Training Center on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Aug. 9.

The HHC Rheinland-Pfalz and 624th teams are the first units to conduct the ACFT in the FFTC since its re-opening in July.

The modernized FFTC provides the space and equipment necessary for Soldiers to conduct functional fitness training aligned to support preparation for the ACFT, which is the assessment for the physical domain of the Army’s Holistic Health and Fitness System. The H2F System focuses on total health and wellness, combining physical fitness with proper sleep, nutrition, and spiritual health. As part of the H2F, the ACFT helps maintain Soldiers’ physical and mental well-being and plays a big role in the Army’s fitness culture. For more information about H2F, visit https://www.army.mil/acft/.

Located in building 229, the FFTC features a 5,000 square foot functional fitness equipment package (think rigs, racks, and bumper plates), select cardio machines (spin bikes and rowers), a combatives mat, and synthetic turf marked with five 25-meter lanes designed to withstand the ACFT sprint-drag-carry event.

“The FFTC is great — it’s got the equipment to perform a variety of physical fitness training activities from cycling to combatives, sprints and weightlifting,” said USAG Rheinland-Pfalz HHC commander Capt. Gabriela Montanez. “Having the space and the right equipment allows units and squads to conduct group physical fitness training in the same area, while being able to provide options and modifications as required for anyone with an injury or profile — without exclusion.”

The ROB FFTC’s recent upgrades are the result of deliberate collaboration and partnership between Rheinland-Pfalz garrison leaders, the Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation and the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, who united behind the vision of providing the most wellequipped fitness training center for Soldiers and Kaiserslautern Military Community members.

“I’m thrilled that we have a place for Soldiers to do functional fitness,” said USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen LaRocque. “And I must thank 21st Theater Sustainment Command, as it really was a joint, team effort to get this accomplished. The 21st provided the beautiful turf, and that, combined with our garrison equipment, created a truly phenomenal facility for Soldiers to train in.”

The ACFT is a six-event physical fitness test that includes: three repetition maximum deadlift, standing power throw, hand release push-up-arm extension, sprint-drag-carry, plank and a two-mile run. Each event is designed to assess and improve physical strength, mental toughness, coordination, and flexibility, while reducing preventable injuries — it’s a comprehensive fitness assessment.

“I tell Soldiers, when it comes to ACFT preparation, train on the events you are weaker in,” said LaRocque explaining, “I’ve seen people train hard to max out the points on an event that they’re already strong in and completely neglect to train for improving performance in the event(s) that they are weaker in. The ACFT is a comprehensive measure of fitness that factors in muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance, so you’ve got to train comprehensively, it’s not the old Army Physical Fitness Test.”

The Functional Fitness Facility on ROB is open Mon–Fri from 6-8 a.m., and Mon–Fri from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. for military use only. Military unit reservations are limited to one hour per unit, per week, or on a space available basis and unit POCs are required to attend a facility orientation. Orientations are offered during staffed hours, 6-8:30 a.m. at the facility. For more information, visit the FMWR website at: https://kaiserslautern.armymwr.com/programs/functional-fitness-rob.

The HHC Rheinland-Pfalz team is already planning more physical training events, with many Soldiers requesting to take their next ACFT assessment at the FFCT and Capt. Montanez couldn’t be more pleased, adding, “Fitness is a part of Army life! HHC Rheinland-Pfalz is taking full advantage of this facility as our team

and trains together to be all we can be.”

MPEP unites mission partners across globe

The Military Personnel Exchange Program held its annual forum in Frankfurt, Aug. 14-17.

The conference brought together 47 exchange officers from 10 countries across the globe. During the forum, each exchange officer had face-to-face time with each other and new leadership, gathered for a commander’s call, and completed required administrative tasks.

MPEP, a special duty assignment, aims to increase interoperability and build strategic partnerships between mission partners and allies, and are vital to continue building upon the crucial partnerships with NATO partners and allies.

With a total of 87 billeted slots including 84 officers and 3 enlisted, and continuously growing, exchange officers and students are embedded in host nation organizations. In turn, a service member from that host nation is stationed in the United States.

“For example, we have German officers in the U.S. and we have U.S. officers in locations around Germany that trade off and teach,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Jordan Stinson, MPEP resources advisor. “Whether it’s our airframes or our cyber technology, it elevates us and our mission partners. We are training them and they are training us.”

During the forum, each exchange officer introduced themselves with information about their exchange location and also some challenges and successes they have experienced since being part of MPEP.

“We have about 14 or 15 different airframes we are operating on to continue building the partnership agreement between

us and our partners and allies,” Stinson said. “It’s a sharing of knowledge. We are helping teach them our tactics and giving them those skill sets to elevate their military forces and are able to aid us. In return, they are coming over to the United States and teaching us their tactics.”

Because the exchange officers are globally dispersed,

they received required annual briefings like Sexual Assault Prevention and Reponse training. Additionally, members of the legal and TRICARE offices on Ramstein Air Base, briefed the exchange officers on information and resources they may not know about due to where they are stationed.

“We are there to help enhance

our relationships, gain interoperability and improve,” said Lt. Col. Kevin Thomas, MPEP commander. “[Exchange officers’] voices are the key agents of change.”

Those interested in participating in the Military Personnel Exchange Program may visit the MPEP Office Europe at Ramstein Air Base.

21st Theater Sustainment Command leads Women’s Equality Day observances

The 21st Theater Sustainment Command hosted two events in honor of Women’s Equality Day, hosted by the 7th Mission Support Command at the Armstrong Club on Aug. 18, and the 16th Sustainment Brigade at the Wagon Wheel Theater on Aug. 24. Women’s Equality Day is celebrated across the nation on Aug. 26 to commemorate the passing of the 19th Amendment, which allows women the right to vote.

Although Women’s Equality Day is federally observed on the 26, Aug. 18 also holds historical importance as this was the day that the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920. On Aug. 26, 1972, President Richard Nixon

issued Proclamation 4147, which became Women’s Rights Day. However, it wasn’t until a year later that President Nixon issued Proclamation 4236, that it officially became Women’s Equality Day.

The events centered around guest panelists featuring fellow servicewomen who have pioneered the path for women in the military. Women such as Air Force Maj. Sandra Salzman, a pilot-physician with the 37th Airlift Squadron, and Col. Adrian Sullivan, commander of Defense Logistics Agency — Europe & Africa who continue to pave the way for females in the military.

“Women’s Equality Day is extremely important because without those women who came

before, I wouldn’t be standing where I am today,” said Lt. Col. Leah Kenfield, 21st TSC equal opportunity program manager. “So being able to celebrate this and to conduct this observance is a big deal.”

The event allowed the attendees to interact with the guest panelists as they spoke about their own experiences and challenges they have faced.

“Everyone in our formation brings something to the table, and not everybody has had an easy go of it getting here. There have been trailblazers in every race, every gender, every nationality, and taking a moment to reflect on those individuals that have gone before us and have allowed us to be accomplished is huge,” said Kenfield. “And really

just taking the time to stop and reflect on our own journeys and reflect on those around us and the enrichment they bring to our formations.”

The guests and attendees tackled topics such as microaggressions, military childcare programs, career and family balance, and various barriers or obstacles they’ve had to overcome.

Obstacles such as breastfeeding mothers who were forced to pump in bathrooms. Now, laws, such as the Providing Urgent Maternal Protections for Nursing Mothers Act or PUMP Act and Department of Defense regulations, ensure every mother will have access to a lactation room in the workplace.

“The takeaway from today’s event should be the experiences of those women sitting at the table. The O-6 commander, the Air Force Major who’s a pilotphysician, the combat comms [communications] captain, the NCO [non-commissioned officer], they all bring diverse backgrounds and experience to the table,” said Kenfield. “I think it’s very helpful for the young leaders, Soldiers, and Airmen in the room.”

Kenfield goes on to say that in the future, she hopes that women will be able to overcome the mindset that they have to sacrifice family for a career to become obtainable and achievable.

“Seeing the diversity of the panel we had today,” said Kenfield. “That vast range of experience and knowledge that they can look at and say, yeah, she made it, I can make it too.”

DOD will deploy AI-enabled detection system to monitor DC airspace

An artificial intelligence-powered airspace monitoring system is set to be installed to enhance protection of the nation’s capital with the potential to scale across other Defense Department and U.S. government installations and systems

The upgraded visual recognition, identification and warning system delivers a tenfold increase in performance capability compared to the 9/11-era system it replaces, said Air Force Lt. Col. Kurtis Engelson, the materiel leader for Battle Control Systems, which oversees the National Capital RegionIntegrated Air Defense System program that partnered with the Defense Innovation Unit to utilize its commercial solutions opening solicitation process to rapidly prototype a solution and create a path for the Air Force to procure successful prototypes.

“It’s a cutting-edge surveillance, identification and tracking system that monitors and defends the controlled airspace around

Washington, D.C., part of the National Capital Region-Integrated Air Defense System,” Engelson said.

After an 18-month prototype demonstration concluded in April, it was announced that Teleidoscope, a first-time, non-traditional Defense Department vendor, was awarded a $100 million ceiling production contract. Orders for the system are already in progress and fielding is to begin this year, Engelson said.

Initial prototype and procurement funding was provided by the U.S. Air Force, and additional rocurement funding was provided by the Accelerate the Procurement and Fielding of Innovative Technologies program as part of its mission to accelerate the procurement and fielding of innovative technologies and help successful prototypes cross the proverbial “valley of death” for prototypes and move technology into production faster.

The new system leverages “market advancements in machine learning and augmented real-

ity features in surveillance cameras that assist air battle managers with their ability to identify flying objects within NCR airspace,” Engelson said.

The production effort focuses on upgrading the cameras and eyesafe lasers used for tracking and visually warning aircraft in violation of the special flight rules within the region. The updates significantly improve air defense operators’ ability to positively identify aircraft and aim warning lasers at much further ranges, Engelson said. Laser Visual Warning System provides those involved with securing the air space over the national capital region, a rapid means of contacting pilots when radio attempts have failed.

The auto-tracking capabilities of the system are applicable to full-motion video feeds, irrespective of the domain, opening the

door to augment remotely piloted aircraft video feed tracking capabilities. The software from this prototype has the potential to run on any edge device or cloud-provided, full-motion video feed. The technology has broad national defense applicability across the services for defense against asymmetric and near-peer threats like unmanned aerial systems and cruise missiles, Nick Ksiazek, the DIU program manager for the effort said.

Heidi Shyu, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering, said success and speed in fielding this technology in such a condensed timeframe exemplifies the improvements her office is driving. “We are able to rapidly identify operational needs and materialize them into usable national defense solutions. This saves time and money, but more importantly, the decision advantage gained by technologies like this will save lives,” she said.

The Washington, D.C., area is home to over 6 million people, key military bases, intelligence agencies, and federal, state and local governments.

The skies over the metro area are filled with commercial and military air traffic and an increasing number of privately owned drones. Protecting this metro area from air threats by terrorists and adversaries is the National Capital Region-Integrated Air Defense System, a component of the North American Aerospace Defense Command

Should an aerial threat materialize, an integrated air defense system is activated by DOD.

Finding remains of missing Service Members a diplomatic success story

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency has been searching for remains of U.S. military members in 45 nations.

Besides bringing closure to their loved ones, this effort has strengthened America’s diplomatic ties with those nations, said the agency’s director, Kelly McKeague, who spoke virtually today with the Center for a New American Security.

The Defense Department partners with the State Department in this effort, as well as the local population of each country, he said.

When the agency sends investigative or recovery teams to those nations, local residents are usually employed to assist, McKeague said.

“Villagers from far and wide descend upon the site and help the team with the labor that’s associated with that particular excavation,” he said. “We are projecting American values in a positive way. And more importantly, for many of these cultures and many of these citizens, it’s an opportunity to give back.”

McKeague provided three examples.

In the South Pacific islands of Papua New Guinea, Palau and the Solomons, they revere ancestors who have passed away.

“When they hear of our teams coming into their village to look for what they call ‘our grandfathers,’ it’s an amazing dynamic. Some of our team leaders who are captains and master sergeants are made tribal chiefs, which I think is an incredible dynamic in that peopleto-people contact. … It’s also a means of projecting soft power in

terms of American values at the local and regional level,” he said.

In 1985, just 10 years after the last U.S. servicemember left South Vietnam, the government of Vietnam approached the United States and said that they wanted to cooperate with the United States, because they knew that finding missing Americans is important to us, McKeague said.

That conversation took place amid economic sanctions and trade embargoes with Vietnam, and predated normalization of relations 10 years later, he noted.

Take Out from 11:00 - 21:00 & Delivery from 17:00 - 21:00

Today, Vietnam is a prosperous, stable country, due in part because they manifested their trust in the U.S. by unconditionally cooperating in the recovery of MIA remains.

Vietnam’s expertise in recovering remains is outstanding, McKeague said. During the COVID19 pandemic, when agency personnel could not travel, Vietnam’s teams unilaterally excavated remains of U.S. service members.

One of those remains identified was Navy Cdr. Paul Charvet, an A-1H Skyraider pilot shot down over

North Vietnam on March 21, 1967.

About two years ago, the agency received those remains from Vietnam and identified him. His mother, then 101 years old, was on hand to receive the news that her son had been found, he said.

“What an incredible moment that was, made possible because the American-trained Vietnamese recovered those remains that we then identified,” he said.

South Korea, another big success story, approached the United States about 20 years ago and said that they still had about 300,000

people missing from the Korean War, and they asked for help from the U.S., McKeague said.

The agency helped South Korea set up a similar agency. “Their laboratory rivals ours in terms of expertise. We have had joint scientific exchanges. We’ve had joint operations,” he said.

McKeague said his greatest wish is that North Korea will resume repatriation of remains of U.S. service members.

“North Korea presents a great opportunity … that might one day lead to better relations,” he said.

Welcome to our informational series on driving in Germany.

Last week we discussed idling of engines. This week our driving topic is when and correctly driving in a traffic circle.

The same rules for traffic circles apply in Germany and the U.S. We were asked from multiple people to share basic

behavioral rules in local traffic circles as there seem to be many misunderstandings (I can think of at least two traffic circles in the area that are complicated).

The basic rules are:

• When wanting to enter a traffic circle, yield to vehicles already in the traffic circle.

• Cars in the traffic circle have the right of way.

• Use a turn signal when exiting the traffic circle.

• The direction of travel is right.

• Use caution when entering, driving in and exiting a traffic circle.

When there are traffic lights in the traffic circle, those dictate the rules.

Next week, we’ll discuss bicycling in Germany.

Florida National Guard activated as hurricane Idalia approaches

Hurricane Idalia reached Florida’s west coast Aug. 30.

Idalia “may bring a life-threatening storm surge to portions of the Florida Gulf Coast, as well as strong winds and significant flooding across Southeastern states,” according to a Federal Emergency Management Agency report posted to its website on Aug. 29.

FEMA is closely coordinating with affected states and stands ready to provide support. FEMA Incident Management Assistance Teams are deployed to affected areas to provide support as needed and additional supplies and teams are on standby, according to the report.

The Florida National Guard has been fully activated with a mobilization of over 3,000 guardsmen in position across the state for preparedness and response efforts, and an additional 1,800 guardsmen are on their way to the state, said Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, who held a news conference on Aug. 29.

“This is a storm that we are

certainly taking seriously, the state of Florida is taking seriously, in terms of not only making sure that we have the appropriate number of people in the state of Florida to help with any response that’s needed but also prepositioning any assets or any forces that might be needed in the aftermath of the storm,” Singh said.

Singh also provided an update to the relief efforts in the aftermath of the western Maui wildfire.

As of Aug. 29, approximately 580 National Guardsmen, 133 additional Defense Department personnel and 119 Coast Guardsmen are actively engaged in the coordinated response, she said.

U.S. Army Pacific is executing mission assignments from FEMA. The most recent mission assignment is potable water distribution support, she said.

Navy mobile diving salvage unit teams from Pacific Fleet concluded their dive operations on Aug. 28. Joint Task Force 5-0 continues search and rescue activities with the Hawaii National Guard teams, the FBI and the

Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, Singh said.

Super simple swaps to reduce waste

With our planet slowly falling apart, we see words like ‘zero waste’ and ‘sustainability’ floating around the internet and feel guilt-tripped by people with 2 oz. waste jars that hold a year’s worth of trash. The truth is, you don’t need to be zero waste, never go on vacation and only wear hemp shirts from now on. There are so many super simple swaps that make for a great alliteration, save you some money (though sometimes only in the long run) and really help reduce your waste without jeopardizing your daily conveniences in any way. You’ve probably already started bringing your own bag to the grocery store and maybe even opting for package-free produce or taking public transport when you can but since there’s always more to be done, here’s a handy list of products to add to your arsenal in the battle against pollution.

I often have people tell me that they don’t throw their trash in the ocean so they’re fine. Unfortunately it’s not quite that easy and if you’ve ever taken a stroll along a river and stuffed your candy wrapper in a full bin on the side of the path there’s a good chance that the wind blew it right into the water and a few weeks later a fish choked on it. That might sound a bit extreme but it is ultimately the course of things and the reason we need to stop it at the source. After all, if your bathtub was flooding your bathroom, you wouldn’t reach for a mop first. You’d turn off the tap. That is exactly what we need to do with plastic.

A helpful little thing to remember in the process of being a bit more green are the five R’s of Sustainability:

Refuse: Say no to freebies and things you know you don’t need.

Reduce: Cut back on clothes shopping and opt for natural fibers when you do (microplastic gets into your water with every round of laundry). Trust me, I know how good it feels to buy that 7th plain white T but with 2,700 liters of water being needed for one t-shirt, it’s time we find a way to make retail therapy more sustainable. Get addicted to buying single, lonely bananas for example. Most people

opt for bundles and the single ones will get tossed out. #justiceforbananas

Reuse: Bring reusable mugs, water bottles, bags and straws to avoid single-use anythings. Buy second hand and sell /donate clothes you no longer wear to give them a new life. See below for tips.

Recycle: Recycling is a touchy subject because statistics hint that up to 90 percent of recyclable waste does not actually get recycled. Nonetheless, make sure to separate your trash to give them their best chance. Go for recycled toilet paper and paper towels as they take significantly less water and resources to be produced but don’t rely on the general concept of recycling to justify huge amounts of plastic wrappers. See above for what to choose instead.

Rot: If you live off base, your landlord will provide a separate trash container for organic waste. You might also want to consider setting up a compost pile in your garden, which is a great way for children to learn about the natural process of rotting. Whenever you can, go for packaging that can rot as it will become one with nature again without leaving a trace.

bottle wherever you are: uni, school, work, airport, a public bathroom while shopping etc.

Coffee mugs can be great souvenirs and mine are either bamboo to make them compostable or more than 5 years old. I can’t imagine traveling without these and no matter how full my backpack is, there is always room for them. It’s tempting to think ‘it’s just one coffee cup’ but if 8 billion people share that thought, a catastrophe is unavoidable. Bonus: most cafés give you a discount if you bring your own mug and you save the money in the long run.

Straws

Straws are a big topic right now and while I personally think they distract a bit from the bigger waste problem, it is certainly a place to start. If you haven’t seen the turtle video yet, do so now. I’ll wait. Americans alone use 500 MILLION straws a day. Straws are made from soft plastic, which is basically impossible to recycle and are used for such a short time that it stresses me out to think about them.

(remove the white bits first) and a twig of rosemary soaked in pure vinegar, which can be bought in glass bottles, for about 2 weeks and then topped up with water at a 1:1 ratio. Smells fresh and is a true warrior when it comes to those nasty white limestone stains in the kitchen and bathroom.

A few more things to consider:

Sustainable staples in my household

Again with the alliteration. Here are some products that I use on a daily basis.

Coffee and tea mugs and water bottles of all sizes. I agree that I probably don’t need this many (note to self: see ‘reduce’) but they are sooo pretty. Ok seriously though, I do not leave my house without either of these.

The chilly’s bottles have fantastic designs (and it is a daily struggle of mine not to buy more of them) and keep your water cold for 24 hours or warm for 12. They also do coffee mugs and food containers. German tap water quality is superb and there is no need to drink bottled water instead. You might want to get a water filter but it’s fine straight from the tap, too, and you can refill your

Bathroom essentials

Shampoo, shower gel, conditioner and hand soap bars. They take some time to get used to but are completely zero waste if you buy them at Lush or come wrapped in paper if you get them at a drugstore. The tins are ideal for traveling. Bonus: no worries getting through airport security with a carry-on.

Reusable cotton pads. Simply throw them in a laundry net and add to your next washing cycle. Air dry and you’re done. Either make them yourself by cutting squares out of old cotton t-shirts or order them online on amazon or etsy.

Toothpaste tabs. Another one that takes a while to get used to but can be bought in bulk (paper) to cut back on plastic tubes.

Coconut oil. Perfect for moisturizing and a great shaving cream substitute. Always available in glass.

Bamboo toothbrush (and case). Can now be bought at almost every drug store or organic supermarket for not much more money than plastic ones. The case is from hydrophil and great for traveling. (Hydrophil donates 10 percent of proceeds to Viva Con Agua, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing clean dinking water and sanitary facilities to countries without either)

Cotton dental floss. Comes in a little glass jar and is compostable. Safety razor. At circa €30, it’s not the cheapest but it’ll last a lifetime and the blades are very cheap to replace. Check out bareaya.com

At home, I use metal or glass straws that come with a little cleaning brush and on the go I have a handy key chain with a foldable straw inside.

Final Straw had the original idea but there are much cheaper options online. Simply take it wherever you go and you’ll never need to ask for a straw again.

Use beeswax wraps and tupperware instead of cling film. Cling film can’t be recycled and produces methane when it breaks down in landfill so it’s an overall inconvenience to the planet. Instead, you can store food in old jars or tupperware in the fridge or freezer or cover bowls with beeswax wraps, cotton sheets made water resistant with wax that can be rinsed and reused over and over again. They often have cute designs and can be bought at gruene-bude.de

Introduce meatless Mondays in your household. Being meat free once a week already cuts down your meat-related emissions by 1/7.

Dish

brush

I bought this one at Alnatura but they can be found pretty much everywhere these days. The handle and head are made from wood. The brush can be replaced and is 100% compostable.

Go for plant milk from time to time. One glass of milk requires 0.6 kg of CO2, 1.6 sq. m of land and 120 liters of water to make it to your table. Oat milk on the other hand only produces 0.2 kg of CO2, requires 0.2 sq. m of land and merely needs 15 liters of water. Just something to think about. Check for a bulk food store around you. Unverpackt in Kaiserslautern and Schüttgut in Stuttgart and Bio Unverpackt in Wiesbaden sell a wide range of produce, candy, grains, oils, toiletries and zero waste supplies. Remember to bring your own bags and containers and you’re good to go. If you don’t have any yet, you can also buy some at your respective store. See wastelandrebel.com to find the zero waste store closest to you.

Homemade all purpose cleaner

Many cleaning products contain ingredients that are just as harmful to the environment as a straw. Once they’re in our water they are everywhere and pollute our rivers and water supplies. Thankfully there are lots of eco-friendly brands that use organic ingredients but if you want to go all out and save some money, I suggest making your own. This is simply old lemon/ any citrus peels that I freeze until I have enough

Get a calendar that tells you what fruit and vegetables are in season and shop accordingly. Choose regional products whenever you can.

The most important thing to remember is that every action has consequences and while that can make you feel bad about every steak you eat, what it should really do is remind you that all these little swaps and steps have the power to make a difference one straw or almond milk macchiato at a time. USAG Rheinland-Pfalz holds relinquishment of responsibilities ceremony

The U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz bid farewell to its top enlisted leader during a ceremony held at Armstrong’s Club on Aug. 25.

Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen J. LaRocque relinquished his responsibilities after two and a half years serving as USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s command sergeant major.

“Command Sgt. Maj. LaRocque

loves being a Soldier,” said Col. Reid Furman, USAG RheinlandPfalz commander, who presided over the ceremony. “There is a saying that says ‘leaders build leaders’ — no one does that better than him.”

Furman praised LaRocque’s ability to effectively communicate, while solving problems and overcoming challenges.

“It all starts with people,” he said. “He is a leader, mentor, and instructor. He is the number one advocate for Soldiers across the Garrison footprint, and he’s the

leader you want on your side when making tough calls.”

LaRocque is heading to Joint Base Lewis-McCord in Washington, where he will serve as the command sergeant major for the 7th Infantry Division.

U.S. Army Support ActivityBlack Sea Command Sgt. Maj. Ronis Gutierrez will serve as acting command sergeant major pending arrival of Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch in October. Wrensch previously served as the command sergeant major for the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vicenza, Italy.

“It was incredible to see from behind the curtain what makes an installation run,” said LaRocque. “I am truly amazed by our garrison employees and all that they do to better the lives for everyone in our Army community.

“I often say that the biggest difference maker in anything is the simple act of caring, and we clearly have a lot of employees that are passionate and care about those they serve,” LaRoque said. “I am truly humbled to have been the Garrison command sergeant major for such an amazing group of people.”

Italy is famous for piazzas, towers, museums, sunshine, and tourist shops around every corner. Turin is not like most places in Italy. The weather is generally temperate. Most tourist hordes in the north of Italy opt for Milan, Florence, and Venice. As a result, the city feels…different. In a good way.

Turin also has a cool history. Celtic tribes established a city in the same spot hundreds of years before the Romans (the Po River was a good place to be), and Turin was the first capital of the unified Kingdom of Italy from 1861-65.

The city has so many cool things to do, it’s almost difficult to choose. Here are seven great places to start.

1. Must-see: Turin’s Royal Residence

The crown jewel (almost literally) of Turin, the ‘Royal Residence’ is actually a series of gorgeous buildings that contain some of the city’s best destinations, including a palace, library, armory, art gallery and archeological museum.

No royal residence would be complete without some spot-on royal gardens. Turin doesn’t disappoint. Visitors to the Royal Garden will feel like they’ve stepped into another, very green, era.

2. Church of the Holy Shroud (St. John Cathedral)

The Holy Shroud (commonly known as the Shroud of Turin) has been rumored for centuries to be the cloth in which Christ was buried. Though definitively proving that claim isn’t easy, the cloth still contains the image of a face and is treated like a holy relic. No matter what you believe, the visit

to St. John Cathedral is worth it. It’s also incredible to see (and learn more about) the incredible high-tech approaches used to secure and preserve the Shroud.

3. Porto Palazzo

Love shopping? Love buying fresh vegetables or snapping photos of mouth-watering food displays? Then the Porto Palazzo is for you. Even if you don’t love shopping or food, you’ll still have a blast here. Located in the heart of Turin, Porto Palazzo is one of the biggest markets in Europe. You can get lost there. Seriously. But it’s the best kind of lost.

4. Egyptian Museum

The oldest (and one of the best, after the Museum of Antiquities in Cairo) Egyptian museum in the world is in Turin. Founded in 1824, the Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum) contains an excellent collection of sarcophagi, statues, and other relics from one of the

oldest civilizations in the world. Open daily, the museum is also great for kids.

5. Catch a Juventus match

For soccer (or football, as it is called in Italy) fans, Turin’s local team can be a bit polarizing. Some fans detest Juventus FC like they might detest the Dallas Cowboys or the New York Yankees, mostly because Juventus is (and long has been) one of the best teams in the world. The team also inspires something like religion among the locals, which is why catching a match in Turin is an incredible cultural experience. As a bonus, some of America’s top players, including Tim Weah and Weston Mckennie, have recently played with Juventus.

6. Head to the Alps

Turin is the perfect jumping-off city for outdoor Alpine adventures during all four seasons. You’re less than an hour from hiking, skiing, cycling, via ferrata, and some of

the most extraordinary natural terrain in all of Europe. In a lot of ways, Turin feels like a very big mountain town — sort of like an elegant Italian cousin to a place like Denver.

7. Let’s talk about food (and drink)

It’s no surprise that a city in Italy might be famous for food. But Turin has a different scene than what you might find in Tuscany or the Veneto. Turin is in Piedmont, which means the food is exquisite and the people are down to earth, which is a brilliant combination.

If you love coffee and pastries, you’re in luck. Turin is famous for its pastry shops, and rightfully so. The city’s bakers and pastry chefs give the best French chefs a serious run for their money. Visitors will find an incredible selection of beautifully designed (and great-tasting) cakes, meringues, tarts, and so much more.

And then there are coffee shops. Turin is famous for having a dozen or so historic cafés, each of which is packed with cultural and political history. Some, like Café Al Bicerin or Café Fiorio, are more than 200 years old. And, of course, it’s Italy. Great espresso can be had anywhere in the city. If you like cheese, fine chocolates, gelato, and wine, you’re in luck, too. The Piedmont region has dozens of delicious cheeses, and Turin has more than 200 shops that specialize in wine.

Getting there

By car, Turin is 7.5 hours from Kaiserslautern or Wiesbaden, and around 6.5 hours from Stuttgart. Many low-fare air carriers offer direct flights to Turin. For train options, check with Deutsche Bahn.

ABC IN KMC: Grape harvest

If you’re a lover or even connoisseur of great wines, or rather prefer fruity grape juice, you’re just in the right place to be. Germany is one of Europe’s largest winegrowing countries and the state of Rheinland-Pfalz produces two-thirds of the country’s fine wines.

The Moselle and Saar valleys along with Rheinhessen are wellknown grape growing regions. Most of the vineyards are on or very close to the 50th latitude, which is rather unusual in international comparison. High quality and successful viticulture is only possible based on a special unique meso and microclimate condition.

The “Deutsche Weinstrasse” (German wine road) stretches 85 kilometers from Rheinhessen in the north to the French Alsace region in the southwest and ends at Deutsches Weintor (wine gate). Many famous towns such as Bad Dürkheim, Neustadt and Landau lie along the way and the region is renowned for vineyards as far as the eye can see

on flat plains in close proximity to the Rhine River. The special mild climate zone provides 1.800 hours of sun a year.

Another famous viticulture region is along the Moselle and Saar rivers, but on steep slopes with up to 60 percent inclines. Approximately 60 million vines grow along the steep hills where the winding rivers reflect sunlight onto the slopes and warm the vines to ripen to a plentiful harvest.

The Celts were the first to cultivate white grapes along the banks and slopes of the Moselle river almost 3000 years ago. The Romans refined the winemaking process, improved the quality and eventually introduced darker red grapes. As wine consumption of the Romans grew along with the empire throughout the centuries, soldiers and civil servants were paid with wine, rather than coins, and even slaves received a daily ration.

About 9.25 million hectoliters (2.4 million gallons) of wine are produced annually in Germany and approximately 257,000 hectoliters (6,789,221 gallons) alone are exported to the United States.

September marks the beginning of the harvest season which can last until December. Large state-ofthe art grape harvesters can pick the grapes on even surfaces. The machines are able to pull the actual grape fruits off the small twigs and leaves by shaking and rattling them before they are conveyed to a large container. However, the vineyards on the steep slopes of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers have to be picked by hand, a very tedious and backaching task, with thousands of harvesters working with century old techniques.

After the initial grape press-

ing process, also known as keltering, the premier wine produced is called “Federweisser” (feather white) because of its milky, white color. Although very sweet in taste, it also has a high alcohol content and is often sold in containers in little booths along the roadside.

A tradition that comes with the season is delicious and spicy “Zwiebelkuchen” (onion cake) together with the semi-processed wine. The warm dish, more of a quiche than a typical cake, with onions and bacon bits, is a perfect complement to the fizzy new wine. Freshly pressed, pure and sweet grape

juice is also a perfect alternative for those that prefer a non-alcoholic delight.

After the first winter frost in late November or early December, the very last grapes are handpicked and processed into a sweet, rare and expensive “Eiswein” (ice wine). Wine festivals take place in almost every village throughout the season and Neustadt/Weinstrasse is the host of the German Weinlese Fest (wine harvest fest) with a parade and a wine village set up with wooden booths to celebrate the harvest season. The German Weinkönigin (wine queen), required to have a broad knowledge about the different types of grapes and wines and their making, is crowned for a year. This year the festival will take place Sep. 22 to Oct. 9 with a parade on Sunday, Oct. 8.

Bad Dürkheim hosts the world’s largest wine fest called “Wurstmarkt,” which will take place Sep. 8-12 and 15-18. The “Fest des Federweissen” is scheduled in Landau Oct. 12-15. Don’t miss out on these special occasions in Germany’s largest wine producing state.
