Recover the air base: 18 NATO countries participate in multinational CBRN exercise Story and photos by Senior Airman Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs NATO Exercise Toxic Trip 23, the largest chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear exercise for NATO allies and partners, was held at Koksijde Air Base, Belgium, Sep. 23-29, with approximately 500 participants from 18 NATO countries. Toxic Trip emphasizes the importance of NATO allies and partners collaborating to effectively and rapidly respond to CBRN scenarios, while also providing an opportunity to standardize decontamination systems in the event of a chemical attack or exposure to chemical agents. “It is a ‘recover the air base’ exercise to practice re-opening an airfield and getting aircraft and pilots back in the fight,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Michael Lundell, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces See CBRN EXERCISE, Page 3

COMMENTARY: October’s domestic violence awareness events call for unity to end abuse

by Department of Defense News The Defense Department is calling on the military community to help prevent abuse and support victims as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is recognized annually in October. This national observance was created to raise awareness about how to report domestic abuse and encourages community members to speak up if they suspect abuse. This year’s campaign theme is “United Against Domestic Abuse.” According to the Department’s Report on Child Abuse and Neglect and Domestic Abuse in the Military for Fiscal Year 2022, there were 15,479 reports of domestic abuse. Abusive and unhealthy relationships are not limited to military members and their spouses. They can also include those who are dating, living together or have children in common. Resources — including safety plans, protection orders and emergency services that address medical, housing, legal and counseling needs — are available to help victims.

“In the military community, we’re a family. We look out for one another, on and off the job. If you have concerns about your relationship or someone you know, there are options for reporting domestic abuse,” said Sgt. Maj. Steve Minyard, senior enlisted advisor to Manpower & Reserve Affairs. “Whether it’s concern over an unhealthy relationship, a breakdown in effective communication, or if abuse of any kind is occurring — help and support are available, often far beyond what would be available to someone outside of the military family.” The Defense Department provides resources to support individuals experiencing domestic abuse and keep them safe through the Family Advocacy Program. It also strives to help service members and their partners build and maintain healthy communication and relationship skills through counseling and education services offered by the Family Advocacy Program, as well as Military OneSource, which can be reached at 800-342-9647. Community members who see signs of abuse or have concerns can reach out to their nearest Family

Advocacy Program office to learn how it can provide support. Military members and members of their families do not have to be in a crisis to talk with a domestic abuse victim advocate. The United Against Domestic Abuse page on Military OneSource provides community members with information regarding their options for reporting abuse. If community members are concerned about their safety (or the safety of someone they know) and need immediate support, they can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233, or live chat with an advocate at thehotline.org.

CBRN EXERCISE from Page 1 Africa aircrew flight equipment command manager. In preparation for the exercise, AFE managers with the 86th Operations Support Squadron, 52nd OSS, 31st OSS and 100th OSS, completed an aircrew contamination mitigation course, which allowed them to revise the processes of decontaminating equipment, groundcrew and aircrew after exposure to chemical agents, Lundell said. Over the course of the exercise, AFE managers employed their knowledge and skills in eight different scenarios by establishing various aircrew contamination control areas and stations in response to chemical and radiological attacks. Lundell said by establishing these stations, AFE managers were able to decontaminate aircrew and groundcrew from fellow NATO nations, to familiarize them with various equipment unique to the U.S. Air Force. Additionally as part of the exercise, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron, and the 99th CES explosive ordnance disposal teams from Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, responded to simulated attacks involving vehicles and aircraft with their counterparts from France, Sweden, Italy and Belgium by removing any possible EOD hazards from the scene to ensure the safety of emergency management response teams to fulfill their part in the exercise.

Approximately 500 players and 18 countries participated in this year’s NATO Toxic Trip exercise, the largest chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear exercise in NATO.

“Participating in this exercise assured our NATO allies of our support, while also enhancing and developing each country’s CBRN competencies by training together,” Lundell said. “Our near-peer threats have these same capabilities. It’s important we exercise together to ensure we know how to work with each other should we have to in a real-world scenario.” Along with AFE and EOD, addi-

tional emergency management teams included those from the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron; 52nd CES, Spangdahlem Air Base; 341st CES, Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana; 31st CES from Aviano AB, Italy; 60th CES from Travis AFB, California; and 2nd CES from Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. To further integrate NATO forces, these EM Airmen ran CBRN reconnaissance and incident con-

trol teams who secured the scenes by sampling and identifying various chemical agents, and, when able, performing tactical combat casualty care to injured personnel prior to medical teams’ arrival. Ultimately, the exercise created common standards, and established uniform procedures for joint operations in the future. “The exercise was extremely beneficial and allowed each coun-

STATE OF THE ART: by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs State of the Art is a series introducing Germany as a whole, but also highlighting an individual state or “Bundesland” every month. This month we’ll finish our tour around the last “new state” of Brandenburg to circle in on our final destination and Germany’s capital Berlin. Brandenburg completely encompasses the City of Berlin and was inherited by “Albrecht der Bär” who established the Margraviate of Brandenburg in 1157. The 29,640 square kilometer state with 2.5 million inhabitants is a land of water with 3,000 natural lakes and 30,000 kilometers of waterways. Sanssouci and a Dacha colony Its capital is Potsdam, just south-west of Berlin with the State Parliament and Dr. Dietmar Woidke of the Social Democratic Party as Minister President since 2013. The city has 180,000 inhabitants, making it the largest city in the state. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Potsdam is famed for its 16 palaces, castles and magnificent buildings. The most prominent one is Palace Sanssouci with its illustrious gardens, built by Prussian King Frederick II as his summer residence 1747, the French name can be translated to “without worry.” Other attractions include the spacious pedestrian area with cafes and restaurants among stylish buildings and a Dutch quarter.

Berlin,

Alexandrowka, a Russian dacha colony with small wooden cottages was built in 1926/27. The Babelsberg film studios were established in the 1920’s. Heavily destructed during the war, the city has returned to its old glory. Berliner Luft Heading north-east we’ll reach our final destination Berlin. The city is not only the capital of Germany with the Bundestag and Bundesrat as federal government and Kanzleramt (seat of Chancellor Olaf Scholz) but is also a city state of its own. On a state level Berlin is governed by a Senate with Kai Wegner of the Christian Democratic Party as head of state, entitled “Regierender Bürgermeister” (Governing Mayor of Berlin). He is the leader of the Senate in the Rote Rathaus (Red City Hall) and has been in office since April. Berlin is Germany’s largest city with 3.7 million inhabitants on an area of 877 square kilometers, but it has not always been the capital. According to a popular operetta written in 1904, the “Berliner Luft, Luft, Luft” has a special air, or flair that cannot be compared to any other city. A mighty Berlin Bear If you’ve ever wondered why a bear is the heraldic animal depicted on Berlin’s coat of arms, there are two theories. One says that the bear can be traced back to “Albrecht der Bär,” who founded the Margraviate of Brandenburg. The other suggests that the bear has been on the coat of arms since 1280 and is derived from the Slavik word “berl,” which means a swamp. About 7,000 years

Brandenburg ago the area around Berlin was a jungle, which led to various swamps, wetlands and waterways developing throughout the millenniums. A bear is a symbol of strength and perseverance and the people of Berlin have shown these traits on a rollercoaster ride full of bustling, dramatic and exciting events throughout history. Let us start our city tour in an elegant horse-drawn carriage through Brandenburger Tor to be greeted by Quadriga on top, coming from Brandenburg along “Unter den Linden” Boulevard in the year 1791, and stepping into a journey through time. Early Years The core of Berlin can be attributed to the two towns of “Cölln” on the Fischerinsel (Fisher Island) and Berlin across the Spree River. The two towns formed close economic and social ties and profited from staple rights on two important trading routes leading south to Italy and from Belgium to Novgorod in Russia. In 1701 Frederick I crowned himself as King of Prussia and declared Berlin as his new capital, replacing Königsberg (now known as Kaliningrad in Russia). The town quickly grew and merged with the four cities of Cölln, Friedrichswerder, Friedrichstadt and Dorotheenstadt under the official name “Royal Capital and Residence of Berlin” until 1871. The city prospered, and prestigious buildings were erected, parks and walking paths along the Spree River were created and the city experienced overall beautification. The world famous Brandenburger

Tor was constructed from 1788 to 1791, intended to be the highlight of the boulevard “Unter den Linden” lined with lime trees. The boulevard greeted visitors entering the city and the gate was topped off with a copper figure depicting Eirene, Goddess of Peace, steering a chariot with four horses. The Quadriga was originally positioned facing Brandenburg. In October 1806 French troops marched through the gate and Napoleon had the Quadriga removed and taken to Paris. In 1814 the Prussians retrieved the figure and re-mounted it in opposite direction facing the city. The famous gate has become a symbol of turmoil and destruction, but also hope and reconciliation throughout time. In 1871 the city was declared the capital of the German Empire under Emperor Wilhelm I and Otto von Bismarck became Germany’s first elected chancellor until 1890. The mighty Reichstag building was completed in 1884 and Berlin experienced an economic upswing after industrialization and a rapid growth in population. By the late 1890’s Berlin had become an industrial city with 800,000 inhabitants and poor sanitary conditions led to the construction of public toilets and bath houses, and a modern wastewater system was installed throughout the city. It also evolved into the main railway hub and economic center of Germany. Turn of the century Improvements to the infrastructure were made and the first subway was opened in 1902. Cultural sites were established, museums opened,

music performances played a leading role, and the Opera House and Theater (Schauspielhaus) were built. The world famous and luxurious Adlon Hotel at Pariser Platz near Brandenburger Tor was opened in 1907 and welcomed prominent guests such as politicians, actors and wealthy families. Berlin was far from the battlefields on the western front during World War I that began in 1914, but residents experienced hunger and deprivation during the time, as many young men were drafted into the military, including farmers (and their horses) leading to a shortage of vegetables and produce. Women were forced to work in factories or take over typical male professions of the time to support their families. Roaring Twenties At the end of the war in 1918 the Weimar Republic was proclaimed with Berlin remaining its capital until 1933. The city quickly regained momentum in the post-war years and evolved into a boom town with entertainment, a wild nightlife scene, loud and smoky pubs opening at every corner, elegant coffee houses, liberal fashion for women and a boost for emancipation. Writers, painters and humanists swarmed to Berlin and paved the way to an impressionist movement. Ernest Hemmingway visited the city for longer periods on four occasions, actress and singer Josephine Baker adored Berlin, while actress Marlene Dietrich born there started her career on various theater stages before making her way to Hollywood.

Free-spirited Sixties After the disaster both West and East Berliners carried on with their daily lives, but many East Germans deserted the country while they saw a chance. An estimated 2.8 million East Germans fled from 1949 to the early sixties.

Booming Fifties With an overall upswing of the economy, often referred to the “Wirtschaftswunder” (economic miracle), Berlin soon recovered in the early fifties and job opportunities opened for both West and East Berliners. Despite the separation, both sides could fairly easily transit the zones. However, the next dark cloud was already looming when about one million East Germans, 100,000 alone in Berlin, stood up in peaceful protest against the political and economic situation. They raised their concerns about growing social problems, paternalism and repression. June 17, 1953, the East German government responded with bloody brutality and at least 55 persons died during the protests and about 10,000 were arrested, while Soviet tanks were positioned and ready to fire. The broad boulevard leading up to Brandenburger Tor is called “Strasse des 17. Juni” in honor of the bold people who risked their lives. Until 1989, June 17 was observed as a public holiday in the Federal Republic.

Business flourished in West Berlin, a bustling new city center evolved around the KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens, Department Store of the West) and the elegant shopping mile Kurfürstendamm (Ku’damm) near train station Bahnhof Zoo while West Berlin rose like a phoenix in new splendor. Beach vacations in Italy and Spain became popular and travel was affordable for West Berliners. East Berliners were faced with low incomes, a poor infrastructure and jobs directed to them in staterun companies and production sites under depressing circumstances. Anyone that spoke their voice risked being sent to Bautzen, the most dreaded prison. Tension was rising during the Cold War era and East Germans encountered tighter restrictions and harassment when passing the access points to the western sector, and travel was limited to neighboring East Bloc countries. Again, dooms day was on the horizon and despite rumors spreading throughout the country and wooden barricades and barbed wire fences springing up, the East German government insisted that there was no intention of building a wall. Truth hit on a sunny summer day Aug. 13, 1961, when the last open access point to West Berlin was blocked and the first brick walls were being built. Realization quickly dawned on West Berliners that they were in the process of being encircled by a wall, while East Berliners watched in awe and desperation as the golden sun set in the west.

Soon after, the German Democratic Republic was declared Oct. 7, 1949, and East Berlin became its capital.

Devastating Forties After six years of raging war, weary survivors and millions of displaced sighed in relief after Germany’s total capitulation May 7, 1945. By then about 70 percent of the city was destroyed, including the severely damaged Brandenburger Tor, the Kaiser Wilhelm Church (now known as Gedächtniskirche) and a large part of living quarters were in ruins. With husbands and brothers having fallen, encamped as prisoners of war or impaired by war injuries, courageous women and older children set out to clear the rubble and debris in a concerted effort without heavy equipment and only minimalistic tools. Women used their bare hands, buckets or wheelbarrows to transport debris onto carts on tracks. The

material was then hauled away and piled up on a total of twelve mounds around the city. The most famous and highest one is the “Teufelsberg” with an altitude of 120 meters, later turned into a park with a magnificent view and is Berlin’s highest “mountain.” These women gained fame as the “Trümmerfrauen” (rubble women). As the rest of Germany, Berlin was divided into four occupational zones with French, British and U.S. forces in the western and Soviets in the eastern part of the city. On the best path of restoring the once splendid city in its isolated position amid the Soviet zone, disaster struck again when the Soviet forces directed a blockade of all three transit routes and water ways leading to West Berlin in June 1948. Berliners faced starvation with a shortage of supplies, but Allied Forces were quick to respond and conducted an airlift from June 24, 1948 to May 12, 1949. Many of the dangerous flights sortied from Rhein-Main Air Base in Frankfurt. One young U.S. pilot came to be known as the “candy bomber” or “uncle wiggly” as he would “wiggle” the wings of his aircraft upon approach to Tempelhof airfield to let the children know that he was on the way. Gail Halverson passed away in 2022 but will always be cherished by “his” Berliners. The next history changing event occurred May 23, 1949, when the Federal Republic of Germany was founded and the quaint city of Bonn was declared the provisional capital.

Dramatic Thirties The stock market crash in 1929 eventually also paid its toll on the jolly times in Berlin, unemployment rose, inflation increased. The rising power of the National Socialistic regime in the nation clutched its angry claws over Berlin and moved into the Reichstag decorating it with large red flags. To put Germany into a more positive light, the Olympic Games were held in the city 1936, a massive stadium was built for 100,000 spectators and other impressive structures, such as the Reichsbankgebäude (Reich Bank building) and a system of underground bunkers were constructed during this period. As the situation deteriorated, critical literature was burned, liberal critics were arrested and antisemitism increased. After the annexation of Austria in March 1938, the city was declared the capital of the “Greater

German Reich.” On Nov. 9, 1938, nine of the twelve synagogues were set on fire during the “Reichskristallnacht,” Jewish shops were plundered and at least 1,200 individuals were deported. Berlin was on the verge of a total economic and political collapse as 90 percent of government officials were released from office, leaving the city in a state of limbo. About 90,000 of the 160,000 Jewish citizens were able to flee, many to the United States or Canada. Events culminated on September 1, 1939, when Germany declared war on Poland and Berlin became the starting point of World War II, and the city experienced its first heavy bombardment in August 1940.

Graphic

The city reached its zenith as a world capital, renowned for its leading role in science, technology, arts, the humanities, the film industry, city planning and higher education. In 1921 Albert Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. With increasing traffic including automobiles leading to chaos, the first traffic light was installed at Potsdamer Platz in 1924, with a policeman manually regulating the lights from a protected cabin. The Berliner Funkturm (radio tower) was opened in 1926, lovingly called “langer Lulatsch” (long lanky) by Berliners.

Reid Furman, USAG RheinlandPfalz commander, in his opening remarks. “Your presence here today makes this event truly special.” The United States Army Europe Band and Chorus performed for an audience of nearly 500 people for the ninth year. The event was paused in 2020 due to the Covid19 pandemic but resumed in 2021 stronger than ever. The two-hour event included classical and contemporary music arrangements, to include “Africa” by Toto, “Oh, happy Day” by Edwin Singers, and other beloved hits. U.S. Army Europe Band and Chorus members conclude their performance at the German-American Friendship Concert held at the Fruchthalle in Kaiserslautern, Oct. 3.

Col. Reid Furman, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander, and Petra Lessoing, host nation advisor, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, welcome the audience to the GermanAmerican Friendship Concert held at the Fruchthalle in Kaiserslautern, Oct. 3.

Furman thanked the audience for attending and expressed the importance to cherish such opportunity to interact as friends and neighbors. “It is with our sincere gratitude that we take this opportunity to say thank you to this great city and its people, who provide a homeaway-from-home for our military members, Civilians and families,” Furman said. “This concert is for you.” In the seven decades the U.S. armed forces have been in the Kaiserslautern area, American and German people have interacted as friends and neighbors — creating long-lasting friendships that make the Western-Palatinate state a unique place to live and work.

“I am always happy to give out the free tickets at the GermanAmerican Community Office,” said Petra Lessoing, host nation advisor, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. “Germans are standing in line waiting patiently to get a ticket, and they appreciate this gift and the German-American friendship.” Even though organizing the event takes a lot of work and coordination, it is very rewarding, she said. “I truly appreciate the help received from my garrison colleagues. Teamwork is what made this event so successful. “Some of our guests even wrote me ‘Thank You’ notes after the concert, expressing their gratitude,” she added. “They want to

let us know that the live performance was a wonderful experience, and it certainly lived up to their expectations.” Romana Clodius, a resident of Otterberg who has lived in the Kaiserslautern area most of her life, attended the concert for the first time, and said she had a great time. “I was impressed by the hospitality, politeness and professionalism of the American hosts,” she said. “I particularly enjoyed the second half of the concert because of the musical atmosphere, and I really appreciated the kind words of Col. Furman. “I am looking forward to next year’s performance!”

made reflective headbands and doctor’s kits filled with images of items like bandages, syringes, cotton balls, and more. By dressing and acting like a doctor, and other medical professionals, with their stuffed friends, the museum hopes to develop early inspiration in considering a field in medicine. One museum visitor said, “My favorite part was seeing doctors tell my girls if you can dream it, they can be it.” Family fitness was the most active station. USUHS med students showed the children and their bears a variety of stretches that encourage blood flow and can help them avoid injuries. Hearing was the final station before the children’s teddy bears received a clean bill of health. Showing real equipment children often find intimidating at a doctor’s office, audiologists Dr.

Tasha Cantelmo, U.S. Army 1st Lt. Carly Halley, and Dr. Hannah Willison invited the young visitors to test their stuffed friend’s ears to become more relaxed with the process. “The Teddy Bear Clinic provides a unique opportunity to highlight the role of military pediatrics and military audiology in a friendly setting that allows us to emphasize the historical and current value of military medicine to the nation,” said Schierkolk. The museum’s public programs provide forums for informal learning that connect the mission of the Department of Defense museum with the public. Unfortunate weather didn’t stop the Sep. 23 Teddy Bear Clinic at the National Museum of Health and Medicine. After an absence of the event due to COVID-19, children once again donned lab coats and guided their stuffed animal “patients” to several stations to learn about healthy habits and the body. Stations were led by Walter Reed National Military Medical Center pediatric residents, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences medical students, and audiologists from the Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center and WRNMMC. After a short welcome into the museum, the young visitors came upon their first station focused on immunizations and vitals. The children were invited to listen to their teddy bears’ hearts, take their blood pressure and temperature, and administer a shot. “These interactive stations help the children understand the procedures they see and experience when they visit a doctor’s office,” said Public Programs Manager Andrea Schierkolk. “Hopefully the children feel more comfortable in a medical environment after this event.” They continued their teddy bear doctor appointments at the dental station where, with the help of a giant teeth model, USUHS med students showed them how to properly brush and floss their teeth. Across from the dental station, children drew their favorite meals on paper plates. A team made up of a WRNMMC pediatric resident, a USUHS med student, and a museum volunteer docent taught the children the importance of a balanced diet, emphasizing everything in moderation. The nutrition station was not the only one where the children were invited to craft. Guided by WRNMMC pediatric residents, they

Driving in Germany by German American Community Office We’re back with yet another article in our driving series — this week, we’ll explain the German right before left rule.

Graphic by vectorlab2D/Shutterstock.com

When does the right before left rule apply? At intersections when there are no traffic signs, when there

are no traffic lights and when there is no police directing traffic. There is also a special sign, a black x on a triangular sign (see graphic), that means “right before left.” It is put up in areas where traffic rules have recently changed or where traffic is a little bit more complex. In 30 speed limit zones, the right before left rule applies automatically unless there are other signs designating different rules.

The right lane rule does not apply at intersections that are driveways, parking lots and dirt tracks that lead up to a regular street. How does the right before left rule work? When approaching an intersection where the right before left rule applies, let your vehicle come to a halt and check if there is a vehicle to your right. If there is, the vehicle to your right has the right of way. As soon as that vehicle is gone, you are free to go. The right before left rule often also applies in residential areas so please be extra careful in those. There is a nice website that explains some of the driving rules and some of the more difficult traffic situations well in English: https://routetogermany.com/ drivingingermany/right-of-way Next week, we’ll turn to defrosting windshields during the fall and winter season and let you know what you shouldn’t do.

693rd ISS Airmen implement ACE in Operation EASY MAC

Participants of Operation EASY MAC pose for a group photo at Ramstein Air Base, Sep. 20.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 693rd Intelligence Support Squadron executed Operation EASY MAC at Ramstein Air Base, Sep. 19-21. This exercise showcased the ability of the 693rd ISS to provide intelligence analysts with deployable communications capabilities over a three-day, crossorganization exercise. “With the support of the 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron and the 1st Combat Communications Squadron, this event showcased the 693rd Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance Group’s ability to deploy intelligence capabilities in an austere environment,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Kyle Hawn, 693rd ISS special missions flight commander. “By combining the 693rd ISRG’s operations and requirements with the capabilities of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, this exercise was the perfect venue to shape future requirements for various units across United States Air Forces in Europe, Air Forces Africa, and Air Combat Command.” Day one of the exercise began with the initial setup of a Mobile Intelligence Continuity of Operations site, which consists of a temporary, sensitive, compartmentalized information facility and intelligence gathering equipment that was provided by the 1st ACOS. Ten units from across USAFE and ACC worked together to assemble the COOP site. “The COOP site enables Airmen in intelligence career fields to per-

form their duties using Agile Combat Employment,” Hawn said. “This displays the vision that the 16th Air Force has for cyber Airmen being used in an operational capacity combined with intelligence Airmen having agile capabilities.” According to Air Force Doctrine, ACE is a proactive and reactive operational scheme of maneuver executed within threat timelines to increase survivability while generating combat power. Airmen implemented ACE by building a T-SCIF where they accomplished their duties of data collection in a simulated, challenging environment. “The Airmen were put through various scenarios to challenge their ability to operate under difficult circumstances,” said Staff Sgt. Carl Jackson, 693rd ISS noncommissioned officer in charge of the cyber mission assurance team. “This training is vital to having Airmen that are always ready to accomplish the mission despite the operational environment.” This exercise not only refines Airmen’s current skill sets, but it also provides insight on what the 693rd ISS can improve to ensure the success of missions to come, Hawn said. “Without the great efforts made by the 435th AGOW and the 693rd ISRG, Operation EASY MAC would not have been the success that it was,” added Capt. Briana Grant, 1st ACOS operations flight commander. The mission of the 693rd Intelligence Support Squadron is to innovate, progress, sustain and maintain information systems and technology assets for Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations.

Unexpected eastern Germany When most people think of east Germany, they think of Berlin, or Dresden, or the brooding forests and ancient rivers near the Czechia frontier. They rarely think of one of Germany’s most beautiful national parks. Which is all the better, if you’re an adventurous traveler. Lower Oder Valley National Park is a gem, and you may just have the place to yourself if you’re there on the right day. Frequently flooded (with water, not visitors) during the spring, the park’s vast wetlands are made up of a mixture of salt and fresh water — which makes it unique in all of Germany. Also fascinating: the park shares a border with Poland,

and staff work with their Polish counterparts to manage the vast natural reserve (as you’ve probably notice, birds pay no attention whatsoever to borders). Visitors, too, can easily move back and forth between the two countries while visiting the park. There is also wildlife, and lots of it. More than 280 species of birds (which make up about half of that number), mammals, and amphibians can be found in the park. In the spring and autumn, the place is filled with migrating ducks, cranes, and geese. Some days, it feels like paradise.

through dense forest and past beautiful floodplains. You can (and will) feel completely alone and part of the natural environment, all at the same time. The Wild Forest Trail is brilliant during any season, even winter. The best part? Depending on when you go, you’ll see different plants, flowers, birds, leaf colors, and much more. The trail also winds through the what are aspirationally called the Densen Mountains. They’re not really mountains – more like little rounded hills. But the place is so beautiful, you won’t mind.

Wild Forest Trail One of the highlights of Lower Oder Valley National Park is the aptly named Wild Forest Trail. This seven-kilometer parth roams

Mescherin Observation Tower Even if you would never consider yourself a birdwatcher, the Mescherin Observation Tower is a must-do. It’s an excellent feat of

architecture (kids, especially, love running up and down the sort-of steep steps), and sits right next to the Oder, the river from which the park takes its name. Once you stomp up to the top, stop and take in the view. The tower offers magnificent perspectives over the Staffede Polder (which is a piece of land that has been reclaimed from a natural body of water). From up top, you get an incredible feel for the richness and diversity of Lower Oder Valley National Park. Warm weather tip: take a guided canoe tour When the weather is warm (generally from mid-July to midNovember), visitors can take guided canoe tours of Lower Oder Valley National Park. This is an

outstanding way to get up close and personal with all the wonders that surround you, and to learn a ton about them in the process. Sometimes, you’ll literally almost run into a beaver (though the birds generally don’t get too close). For safety reasons, only guided tours are allowed. Because the marshland is maze-like, only park staff are allowed to put canoes in the water.

Getting to Lower Oder Valley National Park By car, the park is 7 hours from Kaiserslautern or Stuttgart, and 6.5 hours from Wiesbaden. The park also makes for a great day trip from Berlin: it’s only an hour away by car. Photo by RadekD/Shutterstock.com

Ms. Elke Sittel of the Host Nation Office welcomed the visitors at West Gate and led them on a windshield tour around the north side of Ramstein Air Base. The group was able to view the housing area, schools, sports facilities and learn about responsibilities of Headquarters Air Command and its international support units. The group then proceeded to a working lunch with discussions on exchange of information and future participation of Civilian Personnel Office members at

labor law lectures in Heidelberg. With a workforce of over 2,000 local national employees on Ramstein Air Base, the Civilian Personnel Office strives to stay up to date with German employment laws and regulations. After lunch, the base tour led the group past fire station I and

the Ramstein control tower to the fire department’s exercise aircraft, as well as a view of the two runways. A bit later, the group was especially excited about the opportunity to set foot on one of the U.S. Air Force’s largest cargo aircraft, a C-17 Globemaster. Senior Master Sergeant

Trevor Derr, Lead Production Superintendent of 721 AMXS welcomed the group on board the aircraft and explained the layout and capabilities of the aircraft along with Ms. Sittel. The group was very impressed about the size of aircraft, its multipurpose use with a cargo load capacity of

about 77 tons, and the ability to transport 102 paratroopers or be modified for aeromedical evacuation. The visitors were astonished that the load master is required to always keep a close eye on materials and even has a “balcony” for a better view of the equipment inside the aircraft during flight. In addition, the visitors had the opportunity to climb up onto the flightdeck where Technical Sergeant Sean McPadden and Senior Airman Tristan Walsh explained instruments and features and patiently answered dozens of questions. At the end of the visit, the guests highly enjoyed the opportunity of a group photo and did not want to leave the aircraft and its friendly personnel, as there was still so much to be asked about the aircraft and the job of the maintainers. The group thanked all parties involved and would like to express special appreciation to 721 AMXS, Senior Master Sergeant Derr and his team for their support.
