Team Ramstein completed its first iteration of Operation Varsity, OV 24-1, for the year after a busy week of training at Ramstein Air Base, March 8.

This iteration was a continuation of OV 23-2 from May, 2023, focusing on testing the base’s readiness to operate in dispersed locations as well as our emergency response on base.

Germany’s National Parks: Hainich National Park

Even if you’ve only been in Germany for a short time, you probably know that forests are a big deal here. They are an essential part of German culture, representing a love of nature, a connection to a (far more heavily) forested past, and a desire for balance. Hainich National Park, located in the country’s wooded heartland, may just be one of Germany’s greatest forest preserves. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site,

During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the courageous women who have helped our Nation build a fairer, more just society.

Throughout history, the vision and achievements of powerful women have strengthened our Nation and opened the doors of opportunity wider for all of us.

Though their stories too often go untold, all of us stand on the shoulders of these sung and unsung trailblazers — from the women who took a stand as suffragists, abolitionists, and labor leaders to pioneering scientists and engineers, groundbreaking artists, proud public servants, and brave members of our Armed Forces.

Despite the progress that these visionaries have achieved, there is more work ahead to knock down

the barriers that stand in the way of women and girls realizing their full potential — in a country founded on freedom and equality, nothing is more fundamental. That is why my Administration has put women and girls at the heart of everything we do. When I first came into office, I established the White House Gender Policy Council to advance their rights and opportunities across domestic and foreign policy. I also released the Nation’s first-ever National Gender Strategy to advance gender equity and equality across my Administration — from women’s economic security and leadership opportunities to freedom from gender-based violence and equal access to education and health care. Women are seated at every table where decisions are

MASTHEAD

made in my Administration — from our first female Vice President, Kamala Harris, to a record number of female cabinet secretaries to the most diverse set of judges ever nominated to the Federal bench, including Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

If we want to have the strongest economy in the world, we cannot leave women — half of our workforce — behind. Since I have been in office, the economy has created nearly 15 million jobs, and we have seen the lowest unemployment rate among women in more than five decades. As we implement major pieces of legislation like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act, we are ensuring that women get their fair share of opportunities. We are increasing their access to new jobs in sectors where women have been historically underrepresented, like manufacturing, construction, and clean energy. We are championing equal pay, including issuing new regulations that advance pay equity and pay transparency for Federal workers and employees of Federal contractors.

We are making sure women have access to the resources they need to enter and remain in the workforce, including highquality, affordable child care. My Administration’s American Rescue Plan helped working mothers, especially during the most challenging times of the pandemic, by keeping the doors of 220,000 child care centers open — 90 percent of which are owned and staffed by women. Our Child Tax Credit cut the number of children in poverty by 50 percent and provided breathing room for 65 million children and their families, and we will keep fighting to restore it. I have also signed legislation that provides new protections for pregnant and postpartum workers.

To promote the health and wellness of women in America, under the leadership of Vice President Harris, we launched the Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis to combat the high incidence of maternal mortality —

especially for Black, Native, and rural women — due to systemic inequities in quality health care. We have expanded access to health care services for women veterans — the fastest growing group of veterans receiving services at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Last fall, we launched the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research to change how we approach and fund women’s health research, and pioneer the next generation of discoveries in women’s health care.

Further, Vice President Harris and I are fighting to protect women’s reproductive freedom. In 2022, the Supreme Court made an extreme decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, reversing nearly five decades of recognizing a woman’s constitutional right to choose and make deeply personal decisions about her health care. Now, tens of millions of women live in States with an extreme and dangerous abortion ban currently in effect. Across the country, women are being turned away from emergency rooms, forced to go to court to seek permission for the medical attention they need, and made to travel hundreds of miles for care. This is unacceptable. That is why I have taken action to safeguard access to reproductive care, including abortion and contraception. Vice President Harris and I will keep calling on the Congress to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade in Federal law — the only way to ensure women in every State have the right to choose.

As we lift up women’s health and economic prosperity, we also have to protect their physical security. As a United States Senator, I was proud to write the Violence Against Women Act, which helped change the culture of silence around the scourge of gender-based violence in America. When we reauthorized the law, we increased our total investment in prevention and support to $700 million for 2023 alone — the highest funding ever to protect women from gender-based violence in nearly 30 years. I have also spearheaded historic military jus-

tice reforms to better protect survivors and ensure that, in cases of gender-based violence, prosecutorial decisions are fully independent from the chain of command. Last year, my Administration released the first-ever National Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, advancing a comprehensive Governmentwide approach to preventing and addressing gender-based violence across the United States.

Globally, my Administration is supporting initiatives that help expand access to child care, end gender-based violence, cut the digital gender divide in half, promote women’s leadership, and more.

Thanks to the leadership of Vice President Harris, we have galvanized more than $2.9 billion in investments to advance the economic status of women around the world and ensure they play a meaningful role in the industries of the future.

This Women’s History Month, may we recognize the long, storied history of great women helping to realize our Nation’s founding promise and highest aspirations. May we all continue working to build a world worthy of the dreams and goals of all women and girls.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 2024 as Women’s History Month. I call upon all Americans to observe this month and to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2024, with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities. I also invite all Americans to visit WomensHistoryMonth.gov to learn more about the vital contributions of women to our Nation’s history.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twentyninth day of February, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-eighth.

KMC Commander meets with Kaiserslautern Deputy Mayor

The Deputy Mayor of the City of Kaiserslautern, Manuel Steinbrenner, and the 3rd Air Force Commander, Major General Derek France, establish mutual acquaintance during a meeting at the German-American Community Office in Kaiserslautern March 4.

The meeting provided an opportunity for an open exchange on various topics ranging from the American presence in the KMC to mutual assistance in times of disaster.

Mr. Steinbrenner, who is responsible for the fire department in Kaiserslautern and civil disaster management, showed great interest in German-American exchange.

He emphasized the importance of joint efforts and stressed the necessity of collaboration for shared success. Despite occasional comments on aircraft noise, Mr. Steinbrenner highlighted his appreciation of the U.S. presence in the region and its importance to Kaiserslautern. A central point of discussion was the necessity of cooperation among disaster responders, including joint

exercises and personal contacts. Mr. Steinbrenner also underscored the importance of teamwork towards climate protection.

General France explained that the 3rd Air Force is also attentive of its responsibility to be stewards of climate protection. He emphasized measures being taken to improve energy efficiency in new constructions as well as efforts to reduce

emissions overall.

Finally, Mr. Steinbrenner highlighted the importance of combining both nations knowledge in addressing global challenges, whether in the field of defense, deterrence, or climate protection. The meeting concluded by stressing the importance of continued close and constructive cooperation between the two parties.

“Brut-

Every year on March 1, the breeding season (Brut- und Setzzeit) of wildlife animals starts.

During this season, the animals give birth and start breeding. Especially in the RheinlandPfalz area, we have a lot of wildlife animals, like deer, wild boars, the European hare, foxes, pheasants, badgers, over 10.000 of bird species and many more native animals.

There are special rules during this season and everyone should be cautious with our wildlife animals. Please keep your dogs on a leash (between April 1 and July 15) especially on all meadows, fields and also in forests.

If you see a pup, a fawn or any animal baby, do not get close to or even touch them. Once a young animal is touched and carries the smell of a human with it, the mother will most likely reject it. In order to avoid that, stay on hiking trails and paths.

Always keep in mind — if you see a young animal, the mother won’t be far away.

86th OG Spouse Tour provides look into military life, mission

The 86th Operations Group hosted a spouse immersion tour to provide spouses with a better understanding of the groups’ mission at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 28.

The tour was organized to offer a rare glimpse into the daily operations and challenges faced by their loved ones.

“We wanted to create an opportunity for our spouses to not only see what we do but also to appreciate the sacrifices and commitments involved in military service,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Gerson Medina, 86th OG executive officer.

“This tour was a way to bridge the gap between our professional lives and our families, fostering a deeper sense of understanding and support.”

Spouses toured different parts of the 86th OG where they received briefs, got hands-on demonstrations and were able to see aircraft up close.

“It is all very cool and I am happy they let us do this tour,”

said Melissa Wilkinson, spouse of Capt. Luke Wilkinson, 76th Airlift Squadron C-21A pilot. “A lot of other bases do not do tours so it is great to see how my husband and his team contribute everyday.”

Over 20 spouses and family members attended the event and were given insight into the various missions the 86th OG carries out in support of the 86th Airlift Wings critical operations across the European and African theaters.

“I really enjoy learning about the different squadron’s missions and history,” said Ashley Coughlin, spouse of Lt. Col. Kevin Coughlin, 86th OG deputy commander.

“Spouses do not often see how vital the different units are to the bigger mission and seeing how they fit in, and how they do it is a great way for us to help support our spouses and their teams in our own ways.”

Through immersion tours like these, Ramstein AB and the Airmen stationed here reaffirm their commitment to supporting not only those in uniform but also the loved ones who stand behind them, united in their shared dedication to service and sacrifice.

Fitness training improves run times

Story and photos

Kaiserslautern Military Community members completed an eight-week running improvement program at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 28.

A total of 15 fitness coaches volunteered with the 86th Medical Group Health Promotions office to help KMC members improve their 1 1/2 mile run times and meet their fitness goals over the course of eight weeks.

“We work with individuals of various skill levels to help them improve their running form, running time, help them to either get ready for their fitness test, or just be more physically active,” said Catharine Cutler, 86th MDG Health Promotions coordinator.

Last year, participants saw an

average of 40-second improvement on their run time after completing the training program.

“I am able to run longer distances without having to stop to walk as often, or at all,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Ariana Ward, 86th Medical Squadron, orthopedic surgical technician. “This training has helped me improve my endurance and I have knocked a minute off my run time.”

Participants were split into groups, beginner, intermediate and advanced, with coaches that cater to their skill level.

“Every workout is laid out in a way where we do a dynamic warm up to start, then we go into the run which can be anywhere from 20 to 35 minutes depending on the skill level,” Cutler said. “Then, we’ll do an ab workout that lasts anywhere from five to 10 minutes, and a five minute cooldown.”

The program also welcomes those who are not running currently.

“There’s also a component for members that have experienced injury and want to get back into running,” Cutler said. “The walk to run is made up of members that have either experienced a chronic injury, or maybe they have a sprained ankle or knee injury and want to get back into running safely so they’re not running a mile and a half starting out.”

While the majority of participants were active duty military members, anyone with base access can train with the volunteer coaches. A record-setting 97 participants signed up for the first training course of 2024.

“The new year is a good time for people to take stock of where their wellness and overall physical health was from the previous year,”

Cutler said. “I think a lot of people want to start off the new year on a good foot.”

Regular physical activity can improve many aspects of KMC member’s overall health and contribute to mission readiness.

“I would say that mission readiness means being at your best physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally,” said Cutler. “That includes having access to healthy foods, getting adequate sleep and having some type of physical fitness routine.”

The volunteer coaches met with members three times per week over the eight-week period to provide consistent training. One of their goals was to to keep training outdoors as much as possible.

“There’s a lot of issues with seasonal depression in the winter months,” said Cutler. “Having a way to get some outdoor activity

with the sunshine can help boost mental health this time of the year.”

Volunteer coaches not only provide instruction to KMC members, but participate in the exercises as well.

“We’re not asking people to go and do something by themselves, we want to do this with you,” Cutler said. “I really enjoy participating in this program and I think that it makes a really big impact on the community in helping people reach their fitness goals.”

The current training session began March 1, and coaches are accepting late registrants for those who still want to sign up.

“Advice I would give to someone who is struggling with fitness goals would be to try and find a plan that works best for you,” Ward said. “Don’t be afraid to try new things, and push yourself to achieve your goals.”

USAG RP base operations manager turned Army Professional of the Year

In both military and civilian sectors of the U.S. government, awards are an important way to recognize those who demonstrate dedication and performance within their respective organizations or units. U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz is no stranger to having its outstanding employees stock their shelves with welldeserved accolades, celebrating their dedication and hard work to the garrison and the Army.

We recently spoke with John Cruz, base operations manager for Germersheim Army Depot, who was awarded Installation Management Command Europe’s region-wide Army professional of the year for fiscal year 2023, on Feb. 20.

First off John, congratulations on winning IMCOM’s Europe region-wide Army professional of the year! That must be a great accomplishment for you.

Thank you so much! I am very grateful to know that I am on the right track. However, I’d be remiss if I didn’t share this recognition with our garrison team for their willingness to help me out. I could not have done my work without the support coming from our garrison leadership and the team.

And wow, leading the renovation of a German Kantine kitchen that costs over $8,000. How does it feel to have been part of this renovation?

It feels great! I mean, I learned a few things during this process. Weeks after arriving to the organization, our Directorate of Public Works team presented me with a Facilities Engineering Work Request — submitted by my predecessor — to replace various outdated and unsafe kitchen equipment. Kudos to our DPW and Directorate of Emergency Services team for their continued support!

So, it seems like it was a group effort.

Indeed, it was! In essence, the groundwork had already been established even before I arrived at the organization. All I did was pick up the slack and continued where my predecessor left off. Taking on this project, I had to learn the business model for operating Kantines in U.S. installations in Germany. Thankfully, our Resource Management team got me trained up on the rights and obligations for establishing on-post, licensed

-operated Kantines. Working together with our garrison team made the renovation possible.

And not to mention, you ensured local-national employees they would receive a hot lunch without having to leave the Kaserne!

The Kantine has been in existence for quite some time to provide daily meal services for local national employees. Replacing kitchen equipment that is 15 to 20 years of age is good for business. Not to

mention, it’s just safe to have new kitchen equipment.

Speaking of your accomplishments, what’s your favorite part of being a base operations manager?

The best part of my job is the opportunity to constantly learn and grow as well as provide base operations support to our customers in the delivery of garrison services.

Do you remember where you were when you found out you

were named IMCOM’s Europe region-wide Army professional of the year?

I just got home. My wife and I returned from a weekend trip to Mallorca. When I turned on my computer, I saw several messages congratulating me for receiving the IMCOM’s Europe region-wide Army professional of the year award.

Such a great way to find out!

Anyone you want to thank for winning the award?

Yes, I would like to thank our gar-

rison leadership for trusting me with this assignment. I thoroughly enjoy working with our garrison team. I could not have done the work I do without the support of an incredible team of Army professionals.

I know the winners get a 16-hour time off award — how will you spend the two days off work?

I am uncertain at this time, but perhaps a future weekend trip with my wife.

Weekend trips are the way to go! What else can the Army Professional of the Year brag about?

I see this as a shared recognition with the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz team. Kudos to us!

What’s a fun fact — work aside — that no one knows about you?

I am old school. Like my father, I have this fascination with quality handmade dress shoes. You know, the kind that you get to keep for a long time. All that is required is to get the shoes resoled. I actually went to the Carmina Shoemaker during my weekend trip to Mallorca. It was a wonderful experience to see and try on these quality Spanish-made dress shoes.

And lastly, favorite memory about working for U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz?

My favorite memory about working for USAG RP is the opportunity to learn and grow. In this job, I get represent the command and work closely with tenant unit commanders along with local community officials. I get to be a spokesperson for the organization — informing tenant unit commanders and local community leaders on who we are, and what we do. This is my most favorite part of the job.

Army bodybuilder brings muscle to battlefield

Army Capt. David B. Winne, a native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is an explosive ordnance disposal officer and instructor at the Naval School of Explosive Ordnance Disposal at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. The graduate from Liberty University in Virginia routinely demonstrates his commitment to physical fitness by participating in bodybuilding and CrossFit competitions.

Functional fitness journey

While many people set new fitness goals at the beginning of a new year, Winne said the key to success is maintaining a sustainable training schedule and working out together with partners.

“Complacency kills but consistency compounds,” said Winne. “Establish a training regime that is sustainable for your schedule. Too often soldiers will be overly ambitious with their training plan and crush it for a few weeks before tiring out simply because it isn’t sustainable.”

Winne started his fitness journey with bodybuilding and later shifted gears to functional fitness.

“I’ve been seriously lifting for about 15 years and always had a passion for training and bodybuilding,” said Winne. “For a while, my only goal was to lift as heavy as I can and be as big as I could but when I joined the Army, I realized I had to change my approach to training or else I could quickly become a liability to my team.”

Applying muscle to battlefield success

Fitness also contributes to success during combat missions downrange when explosive ordnance disposal technicians confront and defeat explosive devices that are designed to impair troops and impede missions.

Winne commanded the 18th Ordnance Company when it served as the sole EOD company in Iraq in 2021. During the deployment, the 18th completed almost 600 missions and defeated a wide variety of

devices, including rockets, improvised explosive devices and one-way attack explosive drones that threatened U.S. and coalition forces.

Winne says physical fitness is a critical component of the profession of arms.

“Fitness is a universal language,” said Winne. “It’s a language civilians, other units, military occupations and even other countries understand. When you have a passion for that, it opens doors that otherwise may have been closed. I can’t tell you how many relation-

ships I have built through fitness with people, units and allies that I may never have had.”

Winne added that fitness helps to forge stronger relationships with supported combat units and allied forces.

He built relationships with Danish soldiers in the gym during his deployment to Iraq that led to future training opportunities that improved unit readiness. “As leaders, we may be the only point of contact those supported units know about EOD,” Winne said.

Fitness as a way of life

Winne said his focus on fitness improves every aspect of his life and helps him to deal with the inevitable stress that comes from serving in a dangerous and demanding profession.

“I have found training to be a healthy outlet for stress and for my mental health,” said Winne. “I’m able to think clearer, deal with work stress easier and even be a better husband and father. When you’re putting yourself through grueling training sessions, suddenly the stress of work or life becomes more manageable.”

Famous golfer was a World War II Marine

Patty Berg, a founder and the first president of the Ladies Professional Golf Association, won 15 major titles and set a record that still stands for the most major wins by a female golfer. She was also a first lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve during World War II.

Berg was born in Minneapolis on Feb. 13, 1918. Her father, Herman Berg Sr., was a grain merchant and member of the Chicago Board of Trade and Minneapolis Board of Trade. Both he and Berg’s mother, Theresa Berg, supported their daughter’s athletic aspirations.

During her teen years, Berg played quarterback on the 50th Street Tigers football team in Minneapolis. She was the only girl on a team that included Bud Wilkinson, who went on to become a football coach for the University of Oklahoma.

Also during her teen years, she played amateur golf and then professional golf. In 1934 she began her amateur golf career and won the Minneapolis City Championship and by 1938 was the Associated Press Woman Athlete of the Year — the first of three times she was awarded that honor.

Berg joined the Marine Corps at age 25, serving from 1943 to 1945. Already a world-famous golfer, the news media was interested in learning why she signed up.

In an interview with a reporter from The Pittsburgh Press newspaper, Berg said she chose the Marine Corps because her childhood heroes, Bernie Bierman and Paul Kennedy, were Marines serving during World War II. Bierman had been the head football coach at the University of Minnesota, and Kennedy was Berg’s cousin.

During the war, Berg played benefit golf matches to raise money and awareness for the war effort. In 1944, she purportedly raised $3 million for the war, a large sum of money in those days.

She was also a Marine Corps procurement officer in the Eastern Procurement Division in Philadelphia.

During her career, Berg won 15 major championships: the

U.S. Women’s Open (1946); the Western Open (1941, 1943, 1948, 1951, 1955, 1957, 1958); and Titleholders (1937, 1938, 1939, 1948, 1953, 1955, 1957).

She shared a tip with golf enthusiasts: “Don’t rush. Play one shot at a time just like you live one day at a time. And don’t think beyond the ball. The minute you think beyond the ball, that’s when you see all the trouble.”

When Berg was inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame, she quipped: “I’m very happy I gave up football.”

The association now gives the annual Patty Berg Award to the person who makes the greatest contribution to women’s golf.

Berg died in 2006 at the age of 88.

Emigration from Emerald Isle

According to a 2020 census, 191 million Americans — making up 57 percent of the population — have European roots. After Germans, the second largest group is said to be descendants of Irish immigrants, which make up 11 percent of the population of the United States.

In the mid 1840’s the population of Ireland was about 8.5 million inhabitants, with a large part of them living in rural areas as farmers who mainly cultivated potatoes. In the early 1840’s a blight infected potato crops leading to bad harvests throughout Europe. The blight is a fungus which infects the leaves and stem, turning the potato into a mass of pulp. This not only led to starvation and disease in Ireland itself, but also caused social unrest and about 100,000 deaths throughout the mainland of Europe as well.

The most severely affected areas in Ireland were in the West and South, where the Irish, or Gaelic, language was dominant. The period became known as a Drochshaol, translated as a bad life in Gaelic. Overall, the effects lasted up until 1855 and is today referred to as the Great Hunger, the Irish Famine or just the Famine.

During this period about one million people died of starvation or diseases that came along with malnutrition. The worst year was 1847, which became known as Black 47 and caused the population to decrease by 25 or more percent, in some areas up to 67 percent. In addition to the populace facing hunger, this also led to an increase of petty crime. Theft of a loaf of bread could lead to imprisonment, mainly in England due to Ireland being under English occupation.

Prisons in England were overflowing and since the crown was in the process of colonizing Australia, a person could easily find themselves being deported to Sydney. It is confirmed more than 40,000 convicts were sent to Australia, often sentenced to working on farms for seven years. Some Irishmen may have returned, but many just stayed and this accounts for the high number of Irish descendants in Australia. More than two million people, 9.5 percent of the Australian population, reported Irish ancestry in a 2021 census.

Between 1845 and 1855, at least one million people left Ireland via packet ships, steamboats and barques. The era is noted as one of the greatest exoduses from an island in history. Some emigrants were so

poor they literally offered their last shirt for passage to the United States or Canada and boarded famine ships, often referred to as coffin ships. The vessels were in an unseaworthy state, had a lack of clean drinking water, poor sanitary conditions and enforced the spread of disease. It is noted between 20 to 50 percent of passengers died during or shortly after their perilous 3,000-mile voyage. A female humanitarian organization in New York was highly alarmed but deter mined to help. They welcomed the ships with clothes, blankets and care packages of food and necessities upon arrival.

In addition, many tenants were evicted from their lots by their English landlords as they could no longer pay their annual dues, usually in the form of potatoes or other vegetables. Their last resort was to move into a workhouse or offer hard labor for food working on schemes, such as heavy construction projects building roads. Some were forced to pawn their clothes and ended up freezing in a lack of appropriate clothing or died of mere exhaustion. By 1847, a work house in Skibbereen was so overcrowded that one person was allotted two square feet to live and sleep on, while others passed away on the streets and often enough had to be buried in mass graves.

On a more positive note, there were also humanists who made instrumental efforts in supporting the Irish during this devastating time. The Jeanie Johnston was a three-mast barque, built in 1847 in Quebec, Canada, and was originally intended as a cargo ship. It quickly switched its purpose to transport people and provide relief from the famine instead. She made her maiden voyage from Blennerville in Tralee, County Kerry, with 193 passengers on her voyage to Canada in 1848. Humanitarian captain James Attridge joined the ship and made 16 transatlantic voyages between 1848 and 1855. During these voyages, Attridge moved 2,500 passengers, without a single loss, and returned to Ireland with timber on board.

A remake of the historic ship can be visited and its history explored in Dublin. The ship is docked on the River Liffey alongside the Famine Memorial on Customs House Quay in remembrance of the country halved through death and emigration.

As word spread around the world, many countries offered monetary donations and Native Americans in the United States sent shiploads of corn to the island. Additionally, the Choctaw tribe raised $170, equal to $6,200 today, in an effort to help the starving Irish. A sculpture in the form of feathers

is located in Cork, Ireland, to commemorate this act of kindness.

Irish immigrants were not always warmly welcomed. Many found themselves in gloomy ghettos or poor slums of large cities such as New York, Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia, which also served as immigration ports. Most Irish immigrants pulled through, working jobs such as constructions, garbage removal staff, as factory workers or entertained passersby with traditional music.

Some ventured on and founded cities such as Dublin, Georgia, and Butte, Montana, where 25 percent of inhabitants claim to have Irish ancestry. Irish people were instrumental in helping to build and develop large cities with muscle power, perseverance and their well-known sense of humor. Following generations managed to create a strong foundation in society and eventually prosper, while some families came to wealth and engaged in political life.

One widely known family is the Fitzgeralds, originally from County Limerick, who immigrated during the Great Famine between 1846 and 1855. Some married members of the Kennedy clan, another group of Irish immigrants and their descendants. Their most famous character was

President John F. Kennedy, who was proud of his lineage and stated the following during his trip to Ireland in 1963.

“When my great grandfather left here to become a cooper in East Boston, he carried nothing with him except two things: a strong religious faith and a strong desire for liberty,” said Kennedy. “I am glad to say that all of his great-grandchildren have valued that inheritance.”

The Irish not only brought their faith and optimistic mindset to the United States, but also music that shaped history. Some country music rhythms find their origins in traditional Irish tunes with fiddles and drums. The largest Irish festival, known as St. Patrick’s Day, is dedicated to Patrick, who was instrumental in Christianizing the island in the fifth century. Every year, the Chicago River turns green March 17 and gives occasion for large parades and bustling parties in green.

Another tradition brought by the Irish is Halloween, originally adapted from the Celtic celebration of Samhain and observed on the eve of All Saints Days on October 31. Whiskey brought from Ireland and Scotland served as forerunners of modern distilleries today, not to forget Irish stew or Guinness beer.

A number of other prominent characters have Irish roots, such as George Clooney, Barack Obama and Mariah Carey. And, last but not least, over 800 email addresses on the Air Force global system begin with the prefix “Mc”, such as McFarland and McIlrath, in addition to a number of O’Connell, O’Brian, Kennedy and Murphy.

If you feel that you have Irish or even partially Irish roots, use your time while stationed in the in the Kaiserslautern Military Community to visit the enchanting emerald isle. It’s only a hop and skip away and holds a world full of history, stories to tell and many opportunities to trace your roots. Make discoveries on the rolling hills with a thousand shades of green which gave the island its name, or dream of Celtic times along the Wild Atlantic Way. Meet the wonderful and helpful people, experience their special humor, and with the luck of the Irish, you may even encounter a leprechaun on the way. Fáilte go Éirinn.

Special thanks to the Skibbereen Heritage Centre with Terri Kearney and her team for special insight to the Famine Story. Anyone interested in in-depth information, can study her book or indulge in the “Famine Diary” by Gerard Keegan based on a true account of an emigrant around 1847.

OV 24-1 from Page 1

“OV 24-1 is a combined effort from the 86th Airlift Wing Inspector General office and wing inspection teams to evaluate our wing’s ability to survive and operate in a contested environment,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Kai Gose, 86th AW IG readiness planner.

Agencies from around base fired on all cylinders to push their Airmen throughout a week of simulated conventional air, ground, chemical and cyber attacks meanwhile the 86th AW’s airlift operations continued its mission in various locations, after dispersing its C-130J Super Hercules fleet around U.S. Air Forces in Europe.

“We made a lot of strides in practicing Agile Combat Employment and learned what it’s going to look like for the future of the mobility community,” said Capt. Dave Carruth, 86th AW IG, director of inspections. “We focused on what command and control looks like between our dispersed assets and home station. We learned how we need to communicate with our geographically separated units while Ramstein AB is under emergency situations.”

While OV 24-1 was held primarily to meet annual readiness training requirements for the 86th AW, there was also an active shooter scenario that incorporated the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and 521st Air Mobility Wing, making this multiwing exercise a unique combination between readiness and emergency management procedures.

“The main takeaway from the exercise is that the 86th AW and our mission partners are postured for success,” said Gose. “We’re more focused than ever on improving readiness and our ACE tactics in the future.”

OV 24-2 is scheduled for later this summer and will focus on testing emergency management capabilities.

ABC IN KMC: Decades of dedication

Most active-duty personnel in the Kaiserslautern Military Community have an average assignment time of two to four years, government service personnel sometimes longer. German Armed Forces colleagues might spend three to four years at one duty location, but a thirty-year tenure is extraordinary even for Bundeswehr standards.

This year two members of the German Support Unit, part of NATO AIRCOM Headquarters at Ramstein, can each celebrate 30 years of service and dedication to the base and its organizations along with uncountable memories. They witnessed the completion of a second runway, the opening of the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center, German guards at east and west gates, and a tent city on the flightline.

Stabsfeldwebel (equivalent to Senior Master Sergeant) Michael Chelius and his civilian counterpart Uschi Wiemer both work as personnel staff assistants in the support unit and together reflect on six decades packed with changes, challenges and a few chuckling moments.

Chelius is responsible for personnel related issues, but in addition to his regular duties was also a driving force for daily operations at Deutsches Haus. He acted as the manager of the popular restaurant on the north side of the base that was run by the Bundeswehr. It offered active-duty and civilian members of all nations an opportunity to meet, enjoy a German style lunch or an after-hour refreshment. Chelius also planned themed events, barbeques, organized excursions in the local area and hosted a number of prominent guests. One of them was a former Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, who coined him and topped off his collection of already 29 coins. He chuckles at the memory of events called Friendship Cookings, where high-ranking

general officers competed as cooks, and the Pentagon even pre-ordered meals.

Uschi Wiemer is the personal assistant to the commander of the German Support Unit, Lieutenant Colonel Markus Werther, and handles personnel matters, correspondence, invitations to events, processes incoming and outgoing personnel and has welcomed and said farewell to ten different commanders. She mentioned that working in an all-military environment as the only civilian took time to get used to, but wouldn’t want to miss a day. She recalls the year 1995 when her first female active-duty colleague in the medical field joined the unit and was excited to welcome even more female colleagues in 2001 when the Bundeswehr opened all career fields to women.

The German Support Unit has held close ties to the 86th Airlift Wing and various United States Air Forces/Air Forces Africa departments over the decades and was paramount in handling a multitude of challenges throughout the years.

Shortly after the terror attacks on 9/11 in 2001, Bundeswehr personnel was augmented to handle and monitor incoming

traffic at entry points to secure the safety of all personnel and residents on U.S. installations. The German Support Unit was crucial in handling the process, accommodating and feeding German troops and assisted in organizing base tours to familiarize them with the premises. The augmented troops, which could be air force, army or even navy personnel, managed to get an inside glimpse of one of the heavy aircraft in close coordination with the 86th Airlift Wing Host Nation Office base tour program.

In addition, the unit played a significant role during Operation Allies Welcome in 2021, helped set up tents, established a field kitchen for augmented staff and provided support for distinguished visitors during the largest ever humanitarian operation on the flightline.

More recently, Chelius, Wiemer and their comrades at the German Support unit assisted with facilitating support staff, providing transportation and meals during large conferences, such as the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, hosted at Ramstein Air Base on several occasions, and in close cooperation with the 86th Airlift Wing protocol office.

OHA survey empowers KMC service members

An Overseas Housing Allowance and Utility Expense Survey is open from Jan. 1 to March 31 by the Department of Defense and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Military Compensation Policy Directorate.

The survey collects data from uniformed service members stationed overseas and living in private housing about utilities and recurring maintenance expenses.

Approximately 44 percent of members in the Kaiserslautern Military Community took the survey in 2023 and the feedback caused an increase in utility allotments of 10 percent.

KMC members who receive OHA, live in privately leased housing, and have been stationed in Germany for over 6 months are eligible to take the survey. The results of the survey will have an impact on future utility and OHA rates.

The survey is optional and requires approximately 15 minutes to complete and should be done by a service member or a spouse with knowledge on their home expenses.

Spending time to accurately take the survey allows the DOD to set equitable OHA rates for service members.

To take the 2024 OHA and Utility survey, please visit https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/ Overseas-Housing-Allowance/OHA-DataCollection-Surveys/

After a pause during the pandemic period, bi-lateral military trainings, shooting competitions and other joint German-American military activities are picking up again and the two are looking forward to reviving closer relations and deepening ties.

One humorous memory both Wiemer and Chelius share with a smile was during a computer training at NATO headquarters in their early years. Happily married Wiemer shared an office with Chelius for years, but they both needed to sneak along a narrow path in a wooded area near the Recreation Center to reach the headquarters building. This soon stirred silly rumors, in particular, when Wiemer gave birth to her daughter Michelle months later.

Uschi Wiemer is looking forward to her retirement at the end of the year and plans to travel with her husband Manfred and their dog. Michael Chelius will end his military career in March 2025 and spend his time riding his mountain bike in the Bavarian Alpine region. Together they can look back upon sixty years of service with unforgettable memories and rewarding friendships at Ramstein Air Base.

has an incredible tree canopy walk, is tailor-made for families, and is an unbeatable day trip.

Why beech forests matter in Hainich National Park

Germany looked very different 200 years ago. No autobahns, no factories, no air bases, no ski lifts. Instead, there were forests – often made up of ancient beech trees, which were one of the primary life forms to take up residence in Germany when the last ice age ended 10,000 years ago. According to europeanbeechforests.org, two-thirds of the country would be covered by beech forests today, if it weren’t for human intervention. The beech tree matters in Germany.

It’s one of the reasons why Hainich National Park is so cool. There are thick stretches of primeval forests populated by centuries-old beeches. They represent a direct connection to the past, and a concerted effort to preserve and grow these forests for future generations. Primeval beech forests are home to thousands of different plant and animal species, which makes visiting them a fantastic experience.

The Canopy Walk – A must-do

A highlight of any visit to Hainich National Park is the Baumkronenpfad, or Canopy Walk. This incredible elevated loop walk high above (sometimes more than 100 feet!) the forest is a can’t-miss destina-

tion. Visitors are treated to breathtaking views, loads of good information, and a whole new perspective on the forest and all the life it holds.

The walk is accessible for all visitors (including those with strollers or in wheelchairs), and is open all four seasons. Adventurers can even pick their way across a hanging rope bridge!

Hainich National Park’s ‘Jungle for Families’

The park does a fantastic job of catering to families, and makes education fun for learners of all ages. It’s also a fun place for Tolkien fans. Legends of elves and

gnomes have been around for generations, and the park offers a ‘secret gnome village’ playground with a picnic area that young kids (and even some older ones, not surprisingly) love. Kids also love the Wildkatzenkinderwald, or Wikakiwa for short, which bills itself as a primeval woodland playground for kids. That is a technical definition, and and mostly accurate. For parents, Wikakiwa is a sure-fire way to get the kids to sleep well on the car ride back home.

Speaking of wildkatzen, nearby Wildcat Village, open year-round, is a must-see for animal lovers. Germany is famed for its

wildcats, but they are elusive creatures. At Wildcat Village, though, you can get up close and personal with lynxes and the small, fluffy wildcats that call Hainich National Park home.

The park’s MärchenNaturPfad Feensteig, or Fairy Tale Path, is also a must for families. An easy, 1.5 mile-long trail, it offers 14 different stations that give visitors insights into some of the most marvelous mythical creatures from old German bedtime stories. Tales of giants, dwarves, talking animals, and more emerged from forests just like this one. You’ll be enchanted in no time.

A dream for cyclists

The park is certainly excellent for walkers and families. It’s also amazing for cyclists. Hainich National Park has three dedicated cycling routes, covering more than 50 kilometers, that plunge cyclists deep into the heart of the primeval forest.

There’s a circular route that is ideal for families or for those who are interested in a leisurely approach to seeing the park. For those who are a bit harder core, either the yellow or red routes will do. Neither is too gnarly in terms of the types of tracks used, but there is quite a bit of uphill (and downhill, sometimes steep) for both routes.

Getting to Hainich National Park

By car, Hainich National Park is 3 hours from Kaiserslautern, 2.5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 4 hours from Stuttgart. The park is open year-round.
