STEM-stimulating growth through education

A child participates in “Bumpity Bump Bump,” a game that is designed to help its participants get to know each other, during a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics youth camp July 11 on Ramstein. The game’s premise is to have kids learn the name of the peer next to them in the circle, and if they can’t remember it in time, they must be in the middle. This was one of several activities the children took part in during the beginning of the youth camp to become familiar with one another.

Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For most kids, once school is out for the summer, it’s all about vacations and staying up late playing video games until the next school year comes around. But those who attended the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics youth camp July 11 to 16 on Ramstein, their summers involved coding

computer programs, constructing robots, 3-D printing and more. For five days, kids ranging from sixth through eighth grade challenged themselves in a STEM youth camp. According to Monty Bussey, 86th Force Support Squadron teen program coordinator, the topics they learned about are ones that have a large impact on society. “Throughout this camp, we are encouraging kids to develop a heightened sense of learning in some big school topics,” Bussey said. “As Americans, we

are falling behind in these areas (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Getting kids involved in these subjects will hopefully inspire them and others to not only gain more knowledge but also possibly pursue a career in these fields.” From drones to toy railroad systems, the camp encouraged the kids to think outside the box and stay open minded. According to Bussey, the camp couldn’t have See STEM, Page 3

I’m the commander’s eyes when it comes to safety. Anytime something comes up that’s safety related, people come to me and I can answer any questions they might have.” The 721 APS Airmen often find

Boat trip offers unique experiences

COMMENTARY

by Sandy Paige Contributing writer Windmills, flower-lined canals, tunnels of trees, locks, bridges, bicycles everywhere, cheeses galore, friendly smiles and wonderful memories — this was our weeklong boat trip in Holland. We started June 18 in Loosdrecht near Amsterdam and made a complete loop through Loenen, Woerden, Gouda, Utrecht and Breukelen for a total of 170 kilometers under 48 lifting bridges and through 14 locks. Some bridges opened vertically from the middle, some rotated horizontally and some were high enough that our boat could cruise under them. Most bridges were manned in a contiguous bridge house and seemed to magically open for us. We maneuvered the boat to a post where we pushed a button to open the bridge. A few were operated remotely when we came into view of a camera. At some bridge houses, the operator lowered a wooden shoe in which we could drop our passing fee. As we waited at one lock, a smiling lady played a folksong on her accordion to our delight. The recommended cruising speed was 9 kph, ideal for savoring the beautiful scen-

ery. Our boat offered four bedrooms each with a toilet, a kitchen, dining area and outside deck with lounge chairs. It was comfortable and convenient for seven of us. We docked at least once a day and sometimes several times if we spotted a city market, restaurant or museum to explore. Each night we moored at a marina for about €20 on average parking fee and most often used the shower facilities, although each toilet

on the boat offered a hand-held shower. At the marinas, we filled our water reservoir and plugged into electric power to recharge batteries for lights and computer use when cruising. We also found great restaurants and bakeries. Each morning one of our group went out for fresh bread, fruit and drinking water for the day. It was a week of amazing experiences off the beaten path.

and properly trained, especially the Airmen who are out performing these tasks, people could get really hurt or killed. It is very serious. It’s comforting to know we can perform our job well and have the equipment and knowledge to stay safe while doing our job.” Armour says when a mishap does occur, he will often hear people say they had a feeling something bad would happen. He encourages Airmen to follow through with their intuition and has one piece of advice for all Airmen when it comes to safety, both on and off duty. “Think,” Armour said. “That’s constantly what I always try to get to the Airmen. Just stop and think for a split second. A lot of the time when a mishap does occur, it’s because someone didn’t think just a little bit.”

Armour says while some may think his entire job is sitting at a desk answering the phone and emails, there are other aspects of his work. One in particular he enjoys the most. “My favorite part of the job is getting out and talking to individuals,” Armour said. “Talking to people, seeing what’s going on, even just seeing what they’re doing for the weekend. The more comfortable a brand new Airman is with me, the more likely they are to bring up a concern, and they’re where the mission is. I can go out on the line every day of the week and not see what that individual sees. It’s a different mission every day here.” Through the safety office, Airmen of the 721 APS are provided with the equipment and knowledge they need to accomplish their mission as safely as possible.

Ramstein lifeguard course: when saving lives floats your boat Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

During the hot days of summer, many Airmen and their families head to the pool or beach to escape the heat and relax. While enjoying the water, they may not think of those who watch over them and keep them safe: the lifeguards. Many of them may also not realize that becoming a lifeguard themselves is possible through the Ramstein Aquatic Center. The center offers a weeklong course that teaches students everything they need to know to be a certified lifeguard. It covers basic first aid, CPR, various rescue scenarios and more. A full day is dedicated to CPR alone, showing students what to do in a number of situations. “It gives them a real breakdown of many different scenarios that aren’t offered in other classes,” said Andrew Broadwater, Ramstein Aquatic Center supervisory recreation specialist lifeguard and course instructor. “They’re trained on things like what to do first if there’s a drowning versus nondrowning victim, if it’s an infant rather than an adult or their roles depending on how many rescuers you have responding. All of that comes into teaching CPR for the professional rescuer that you don’t get in those lower-level courses. It’s very intricate.” For many students, the biggest draw to the course is becoming qualified in something that can lead to employment but also relates to an enjoyable pastime. “I’m an avid swimmer myself. I grew up swimming in lakes, rivers and the ocean, so this seems like a really useful skill,” said Kathryn Postma, Ramstein Aquatic Center STEM, from Page 1

been successful without having fun. “As the person that oversaw these kids, I was looking for different ways to keep things fun to help the kids learn,” Bussey said. “Kids would look forward to learning new things every day. … Our goal was to leave these kids as motivated young men and women and increase their interest in STEM.” Some of the ways they did this was by taking normal hobbies, toys or aspects of children’s daily lives and demonstrating how those were made.

Andrew Broadwater, Ramstein Aquatic Center supervisory recreation specialist lifeguard and lifeguard course instructor, demonstrates a rescue of a victim on the bottom of the pool July 14 on Ramstein. The lifeguard course taught students how to perform rescues for victims that are conscious or unconscious, face up or face down, and on the surface or on the bottom of the pool.

lifeguard course student. “I have a lot of younger cousins and sisters that I watch, so this expands the realms of things I can do, both recreationally and as a job.” While the lifeguard course may seem like a simple solution to find work, some students find the curriculum more difficult than they anticipated. Each student must pass prerequisites to show they are physically capable of providing assistance to an injured swimmer. This includes swimming 300 meters using the front crawl or breaststroke, treading water for two minutes without using their hands, and swimming 20 meters, diving down eight to 10 feet to pick up a 10-pound brick and swimming back with it in both hands. All of these skills will aid the students when it comes to a real-life scenario. “The two minutes of treading water without the use of hands and swimming with the brick, those both come into play when dealing with sub-

“Another goal of ours was to get kids off video games and, instead, learning how to code or design one,” Bussey added. “We want them to become innovators of the future.” However, Bussey couldn’t do this by just giving them the tools. He needed someone to teach the kids how to use these tools, and one of the people brought on board was Burkhard Link, 86th Force Support Squadron STEM engineering instructor. “I teach principles of engineering and applied sciences at the University of Heidelberg,” Link said. “Here at the camp,

merged head, neck or spinal injuries,” Broadwater said. “You have to stabilize the victim with both hands and bring them up to the surface, then be able to support this person and yourself above the water so both can breathe while still maintaining stabilization. It’s a lot of physical exertion.” The arduous physical side of the lifeguard course can come as a surprise to some students, but other aspects can be easier than expected. “It’s a lot harder to support another person correctly than I originally thought, but it’s also easier to get to the bottom of the pool than I anticipated,” Postma said. “It was surprising because you think 14 feet is really deep.” When a student struggles with the prerequisites, they are encouraged to take the time until the next course to practice and strengthen their swimming skills. If a student also has trouble with a particular type of rescue or technique during the class,

I am leading the classes and activities for the kids to partake in.” His role in the camp played a major part in helping the participants understand subjects and become interested, and according to Link, it’s been a worthwhile experience from his perspective. “It’s been so much fun doing this,” Link said. “I’ve come to know the kids, and they are so creative. I always feel like I’m underrating them.” For most children, once school comes back into session, getting into the flow of waking up early for class,

Broadwater works with them until they have a better understanding. “I try to do a good job as an instructor to help people pass,” Broadwater said. “I spend extra time working with people who are struggling in certain areas. I’d say 95 percent of people who take the full course pass.” The skills taught in the lifeguard course can reach beyond the water, and those who have undergone the training often find themselves using their knowledge in unexpected situations and surroundings. “People usually get certified as a lifeguard and they have a plan, but you always end up using it outside of whatever you planned,” Broadwater said. “My first rescue was at an apartment complex two weeks after I was certified. I was a part of a skit at Vacation Bible School and wasn’t even near the pool, but I could see it from my vantage point. I saw someone jump into the deep end of the pool, and they didn’t know how to swim. I never expected to use my training there.” Broadwater also had a group of students in the course last year who were able to assist their friend who was choking because of the knowledge they attained during the class. This use of the skills taught during the course is one of the reasons people sign up. “I was really looking forward to the CPR and first-aid certification,” Postma said. “I am a babysitter, so learning this is something that’s really useful. I’ve never had CPR training, and it’s an important skill not only for lifeguarding but in life.” Through the lifeguard course, the Ramstein Aquatic Center is helping KMC members learn a new skill to better themselves and enable them to possibly save lives both in and out of the pool.

having homework and studying might be challenging. For the kids that challenged themselves at the STEM camp, however, these aspects of

school will be fresh in their heads and may even offer something new to share with their peers and inspire them to think outside the box.

Attention dog owners

Due to recent events, the Landstuhl police authorities want to stress that dog owners must ensure their dogs are walked on a leash within a city or community. Outside a city or community, a dog has to be put on a leash immediately when other people approach. There were complaints brought to the police, especially in the district Melkerei, that dogs are walked without a leash and dog feces are not removed. Dog owners must also make sure that public roads, paths, squares and parks are kept clean. Dog owners are responsible for the disposal of dog excrements. Dog owners who disregard regulations can be fined.

Summary of 2015 annual Drinking Water Quality Report Courtesy of 86th Medical Group Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight

The 86th Medical Group Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight is pleased to present Ramstein’s annual Drinking Water Quality Report. This report, which is required by Air Force Instruction and mirrors the Consumer Confidence Report required by the Environmental Protection Agency in the continental United States, is designed to inform the public about the water and services delivered to Ramstein over the past year. The goal is to provide a safe, high-quality and reliable drinking water supply. The bioenvironmental engineering flight is continually striving to improve its services and protect our vital community water resources. The 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Water Plant and Exterior Utility sections operate and maintain the KMC water distribution systems and equipment. The 786 CES personnel work 24/7 to ensure the system is pressurized and maintains sufficient residual disinfectant. The 786 CES personnel conduct daily operational monitoring to maintain the high quality of their final product — our drinking water.

Note: Grey area indicates parameters too numerous for this table. All results are available upon request; however, there were no exceedances. (MCL — Maximum contamination level; AL — Action level; Range — Range of actual measured results)

The 86 MDG Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight routinely monitors water quality throughout the systems. Each week they test chlorine and acidic levels and collect water samples for bacteriological and chemical analysis. All routine monitoring requirements are conducted in accordance with the Final Governing Standards for Germany. The FGS-G defines the parameters to be monitored, which incorporates the most stringent U.S. and German requirements — the sampling frequency, the maximum contaminant level, the notification procedures and what processes should be

initiated if noncompliance is detected, such as treatment techniques, bottled water issuance, etc. The U.S. Army Public Health Command Public Health Region - Europe at Landstuhl, a German- and U.S.-certified and accredited laboratory, performs most of the analytical requirements. The 86 MDG Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight routinely monitors over 60 drinking water parameters. The provided table shows the 2015 calendar year results for Ramstein Air Base System 1. Ramstein has five systems. The complete 2015 Annual Drinking Water Report is available at www.ramstein.

af.mil under “Other Links.” Due to the quality of the groundwater source, treatment is, for the most part, unnecessary. Chlorination is undertaken because it provides a measurable means of ensuring our water is properly disinfected. All water sources are chlorinated, except for Vogelweh, and some water sources are filtered. This is done to ensure the safest, most aesthetically pleasing product for consumers. Since Nov. 1, 2007, Vo g e l w e h , including Kapaun Air Station, has been supplied by the City of Kaiserslautern’s water provider Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern. Similar

water system information is available from SWK. The bioenvironmental engineering flight can help individuals find this information. Although the base does not hold public meetings on its water distribution systems, the 86 MDG Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight is available to address any questions or concerns you may have. Housing residents should contact the housing office at 489-6643 with any water concerns. Dorm residents should contact their building manager. Additional questions can be directed to 86 MDG Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight at 479-2220 or 06371-46-2220.

Exchange deputy director focuses on making lives better for KMC Courtesy of Army & Air Force Exchange Service Public Affairs Army & Air Force Exchange Service Deputy Director Mike Immler is making it his mission to ensure the Exchange is doing all it can to serve Airmen and Soldiers in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. “The Exchange is dedicated to making the KMC a community, ensuring Airmen, Soldiers, retirees and their families have a place to shop and dine that they can be proud of,” Immler said. To better understand how the Exchange can best meet the needs of the community, Immler toured the Kaisersalutern Military Community Center Exchange, food court and Express during his visit to Ramstein July 15 to 16. He also met with Col. Brandon Hileman, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander, to discuss how the Exchange can provide the best support possible. A BE FIT shop recently opened inside the KMCC Exchange, giving the section the look

and feel of a major sporting goods store. The concept shop features name-brand athletic wear and footwear for men and women from national brands including Under Armour, Adidas, Nike and Brooks. Ramstein and Pulaski express stores were recently upgraded, including an expanded Snack Avenue and the addition of Hunt’s Brothers Pizza. A new island cooler is stocked with goodfor-you items for healthy eating on the go, including fresh fruit, salads and fruit cups. In recent months, the Exchange has opened the restaurants Popeyes, Dunkin’ Donuts and Via Vai, bringing more dining choices to military families. A GNC is on the horizon for the mall as well. If Soldiers and Airmen can’t find the products they need in the KMCC Exchange, they can go to www.shopmyexchange.com, which has been improved to make shopping and order fulfillment easier, Immler said. “The Exchange online store is continually being updated to ensure the best brands are just

a click away,” Immler said. “Being able to shop the Exchange online for an expanded product assortment is a key part of our efforts to provide a consistent experience on the internet or on the installation.” Every time Airmen or Soldiers shop at the Exchange or www.shopmyexchange.com, they are generating funds to help make life better in the KMC. “For every dollar earned, historically 67 cents comes back to the military community, a dividend to quality-of-life programs,” Immler said. “Last year, sales at the Kaisersalutern Military Community Exchange generated more than $664,523 on behalf of quality-of-life programs. Every time shoppers buy from the Exchange, they are improving their community.” Immler is the first civilian deputy director of the 120-year-old organization, which employs approximately 35,500 associates worldwide. In addition, 35 active-duty service members are assigned to the Exchange.

86 SFS welcomes new MWD

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Almost all Airmen can remember their first few months in the Air Force — going through the Military Entrance Processing Station, entering Basic Military Training, moving on to technical school and finally making it to their first duty station. But not all who serve come on two legs. Many may not realize the journey a military working dog travels to become one and how it can paral-

lel to their own journey into the Air Force. The 86th Security Forces Squadron welcomed a new MWD, a 2-year-old German Shepherd named Rogo, to their ranks June 29. He is fresh out of training from the 321st Training Squadron at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, the gateway to the Air Force for Airmen and MWDs. “Rogo has a great temperament for an MWD, meaning he can be trained easily,” said Staff Sgt. Bernardo Cortes, 86 SFS MWD trainer. “This is what you want because the MWD is able to learn tasks fast without

having to stay stuck on what we call the ‘teach stage.’” Before Rogo underwent training at Lackland, he had a few requirements to pass to be selected as an MWD. To start with, he had to fall under specific height and weight measurements and had a full medical examination for diseases and problems with hips and elbows. He was also tested for gun shyness, aggressiveness and basic searching behavior. This is similar to Airmen going through MEPS and BMT to ensure they are physically and mentally capable of being in the military.

Once it was determined Rogo was a good fit for the military, he went to tech school, or at least his version of it. For 156 days, he was taught obedience, aspects of patrol and explosive detection. “What the MWDs are taught at Lackland is the bare basics,” said Staff Sgt. Lance Oakes, 86 SFS MWD trainer supervisor. “Much like Airmen going through tech school, they are taught the basics of how to perform their job. What we do when they arrive here is hone and sharpen those skills. The MWDs will know the commands, but sometimes they will or will not follow them. We work with them to ensure they obey every time.” There is a 90-day trial period for MWDs to see how they will work in their new home. During this time, Rogo will be tested on multiple scouts, building search, patrol tasks, detection training, obstacle course, basic obedience and exposure to multiple real-world environments. “The purpose is to expose the MWD to as much as possible to see if they are good candidates to be operational in the field,” Oakes said. “If they have discrepancies, they can be sent back to Lackland AFB and another MWD will be sent to replace them.” Luckily for Rogo, he seems to be adjusting well and shows promise with his training. “All of us in the Kaiserslautern Military Community should feel a little safer,” Cortes said. “Whether it is at night or during the day, Rogo will be on the job, protecting our freedom and keeping the bad guys in check.”

86th Dental Squadron readies USAFE Airmen

Cleaning tools rest on a table while a dentist operates on a patient at the 86th Dental Squadron July 1 on Ramstein. The dental team at Ramstein is not only responsible for ensuring the dental health of those within the local area but also of those at 250 geographically separated units.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Nicole Keim 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Readiness to deploy at a moment’s notice is a top priority for Airmen within U.S. Air Forces in Europe, and the 86th Dental Squadron plays a critical role in ensuring members across the KMC are worldwide qualified. As the biggest USAFE dental clinic, days are never dull for the dental technicians, with the responsibility to tend to more than 250 patients a day from across the KMC. They not only ensure the dental health of those within the local area but also those at 250 geographically separated units through a point of contact that checks to ensure USAFE Airmen are deployment ready. “Teamwork is essential in accomplishing the mission here,” said Tech. Sgt. Matthew Larsen, 86 DS support flight chief. “It’s essential because of our high volume of patients. … This is such a large machine. All the Airmen in the clinic help each other

and work together to be wingmen because if one person drops out it can be a burden.” The clinic is comprised of a clinical and a support section. Services offered here include general dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, endodontics, oral surgery and preventative dentistry, and it has both an area and base dental lab. With more than 1,000 patients walking through the door every week, it is no surprise that there are approximately 130 personnel working at this facility to keep the gears oiled and things running smoothly. With such a large customer base, it presents a particular challenge, Larsen explained. “This job has taught me to be compassionate and caring and to listen and empathize,” Larsen said. “It taught me not to look at a patient as a number but to (listen to their needs). We see many patients all the time, every day, so we address and treat those patients like they are the first one, each and every time. That way

Senior Airman Benjamin Martinez, 86th Dental Squadron oral preventative technician, cleans the teeth of a patient July 1 on Ramstein. when we are speaking to them or listening, a rapport is built, and they know that you are genuine and care about their needs.” Once an Airmen leaves to a deployed environment, there is no surety of quality dental care, so it is a priority to care for members before they leave. “The dental team is a critical piece of the mission here at Ramstein because we need folks to be able to deploy at a moment’s notice,” said Chief Master Sgt. Johnny Grassi, 86 DS chief enlisted manager. “Sometimes, some dental work that needs to be done cannot be done in a single day. Generally in a deployed environment, there’s usually a very (limited amount of dental care) that’s out there. If someone needs anything done, the chances are slim that it can be fixed out in the field. A lot of times they will have to send the member back (to home station), so we want to minimize that.” Being prepared around the clock is crucial in worldwide readiness,

Larsen explained. “All of the services we provide ensure Airmen are dentally ready,” Larsen said. “It’s important because it is a part of total health. We have to be physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally prepared when we are deployed. You have to be medically ready so that you can do your job.” Although different from many stateside or smaller overseas assignments, the clinic on Ramstein teaches Airmen valuable lessons that give them a broader view of their impact on the mission. “For an Airmen to be stationed here, it’s a great opportunity because we have every specialty that Air Force dentistry provides,” Grassi said. “From a technical aspect, they can leave here and be very wellrounded and competent going to their next base, even possibly more so than a dental assistant with more rank.” The dental team at Ramstein continuously provides care to Airmen so that they can remain “Forward, Ready, Now.”

7th Mission Support Command welcomes new commander by Maj. Daryle Sewell 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs The 7th Mission Support Command welcomed its new commanding general at a change of command ceremony July 9 on Daenner Kaserne. With Maj. Gen. Duane A. Gamble, 21st Theater Sustainment Command commanding general, presiding over the outdoor ceremony, 7th MSC colors were passed from outgoing command-

ing general Brig. Gen. Arlan DeBlieck to Brig. Gen. Steven W. Ainsworth. DeBlieck assumed command of the 7th MSC in July of 2014. During his tenure, the unit participated in numerous joint international exercises, to include Anakonda Response ’16 in Papa, Hungary, and Daimel ’15 in Manzanares, Spain. The 7th MSC also deployed personnel in support of the African Ebola Response mission. The unit was re-designated

as a mission support command in 2015, bringing it in line with other Army Reserve organizations outside the continental United States. In his parting words, DeBlieck reflected on the success and failures of expanding the U.S. Army Reserve strength in Europe. “In many cases, we struggled at our first, second and third tries to do things. But in each iteration, we improved, and that’s what counts,” DeBlieck said.

DeBlieck expressed sincere gratitude and pride to unit members. “At the heart of the 7th MSC are the outstanding Soldiers and their families,” DeBlieck said. “Over the past two years, you have demonstrated Army Reserve capabilities by volunteering to fill gaps within Army Europe formations. I am honored to have been given the privilege to lead you.” Gamble praised DeBlieck. “He has been at the heart

of the employment of the U.S. Army Reserve in Europe. Arlan’s leadership has resulted in seamless integration with European active component forces,” Gamble said. “His list of accomplishments and the successes of the 7th MSC is long and would make anyone proud.” DeBlieck’s next assignment will be the commanding general of the 81st Regional Support Command at Fort See 7th MSC, Page 11

Ainsworth comes to the 7th MSC from the 94th Division Sustainment Command at Fort Lee, Virginia, where he served as both the commander and the deputy commander for the Sustainment Center of Excellence. Ainsworth assumes command at a time when the Army has been adjusting to a higher than expected operations tempo with reduced manpower and resources and heavier reliance on the Reserve component. “Command is about the unit, mission and the Soldiers. It is an honor, and I am humbled to be the next commander of the 7th MSC,” Ainsworth said. “We will work to expand our capabilities and capacities in order to support the 21st TSC and the fivepillar strategy for Strong Europe. We will continue to represent the U.S. Army Reserve in Europe with honor and dignity.” Gamble welcomed Ainsworth to the 21st family. “You’re taking command of unit made up of soldiers who execute their missions with reflexive competency,” Gamble said. “Steven’s wide and diverse career skill sets and ability to take on multiple challenges will serve U.S. Army Reserve Europe well.” The 7th MSC is the only Army Reserve unit fully based in Europe. The 7th is trained and ready to provide forward-stationed consequence management command and control capabilities, civil support teams, civil affairs forces and all other assigned U.S. Army Reserve units in support of U.S. Army Europe and 7th Army. The command has nearly 1,000 Soldiers assigned to 22 reserve units stationed throughout Germany and Vicenza, Italy.

USAEUR CG, other senior leaders visit the 361st Civil Affairs Brigade

Lt. Gen. Frederick B. Hodges, U.S. Army Europe commanding general, shakes hands with a Soldier in a chemical protective suit during a visit July 9 on Daenner Kaserne. Hodges emphasized the U.S. Army and Army Reserve's strategic role in Europe against both conventional and unconventional threats.

by Sgt. Daniel J. Friedberg and Lt. Col. Jefferson Wolfe 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs A group of senior leaders, led by the commanding general of United States Army Europe, visited the 361st Civil Affairs Brigade to learn more about the unit’s capabilities and accomplishments. Lt. Gen. Frederick B. Hodges visited Soldiers of the 361st Civil Affairs Brigade during a visit July 9 to Daenner Kaserne. Other senior leaders who attended included Maj. Gen. Duane Gamble, 21st Theater Sustainment Command commanding general; Maj. Gen. Patrick Conboy, U.S. Army Reserve Command deputy commanding general (operations); and Command Sgt. Maj. James Willis, Army Reserve senior enlisted leader. Leaders and Soldiers from the 361st briefed Hodges on various aspects of the command’s capabilities and recent

accomplishments. The 773rd Civil Support Team, the only such unit in the Army Reserve, showcased the unit’s consequence management capabilities during the outdoor tactical briefing featuring the newest equipment fielded by the unit. “The purpose of this briefing was twofold: to provide Lt. Gen. Hodges with greater situational awareness of the 361st Civil Affairs Brigade and to back brief him on how the 361st is working to support the five pillars of a Strong Europe and his Strong Europe 2016-2017 guidance,” said Col. John Novak, 361st Civil Affairs Brigade commander. The briefings highlighted current and projected partnerships; Humanitarian Assistance and Humanitarian Civil Assistance civil affairs assessments conducted from 2012 to 2015; the brigade’s culturally attuned, linguistically diverse and experienced Soldiers; and how all of the unit’s actions are nested with-

in the five pillars for Strong Europe, Novak added. “The brigade fits into USAREUR’s Strong Europe plan by providing trained and ready civil affairs teams and companies, movement control teams, the only civil support team in the Army Reserve, and human resource and engineering professionals to Army Europe,” Novak said. These capabilities give the 361st the flexibility to assist commanders in all phases of joint operations and some areas of Army support to other services, said Maj. Nathan Gardner, 361st Civil Affairs Brigade operations officer. “Some of our young service members showcased their unique cultural, linguistic and civilian skills that we bring to the fight, and many were recognized by Lt. Gen. Hodges for their service,” Gardner said. It was a busy day for the Soldiers of the 361st Civil Affairs Brigade and the 7th Mission Support Command.

The units conducted a change of command ceremony to welcome the 7th MSC’s newest commander, Brig. Gen. Steven W. Ainsworth, just hours before the senior leaders visit. Hodges emphasized the U.S. Army and Army Reserve’s strategic role in Europe against both conventional and unconventional threats. Hodges also spent time with the Soldiers, asking detailed questions about training readiness and Army standards. He also gave praise and encouraged active dialogue with the Soldiers he spoke with. “I’m always trying to learn, even in my old age,” Hodges said. Making suggestions to improve the camouflage netting draping the vehicles arrayed before him, Hodges stressed the continued need for the strategic positioning of U.S. Army and Reserve forces in Europe. He reminded the Soldiers,

many of whom were seasoned in conflicts against unconventional combatants in South East Asia, not to forget that there are potential conventional adversaries facing the United States and to be tactically ready for those threats too. “They may have planes or drones, and if they find you, they’ll put a rocket on you,” Hodges warned. Hodges’ visit was very positive, Novak said. “He is an insightful, personable and caring senior leader focused on leader development and fostering a learning organization throughout Army Europe,” Novak said. “I believe that Lt. Gen. Hodges was generally pleased with the four hours he spent learning more about the brigade, its amazing Soldiers and its activities in support of Strong Europe.” Editor’s note: Maj. Daryle Sewell, 7th MSC Public Affairs, also contributed to this report.

405th AFSB welcomes new leadership team by Sgt. Maj. Michael Pintagro 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs

The 405th Army Field Support Brigade welcomed a new command team and thanked its departing predecessors during a unique combined change of command and responsibility ceremony held July 11 at NCO Field on Daenner Kaserne. Col. Rodney H. Honeycutt replaced Col. Todd S. Bertulis, who took command of the AFSB in August 2014. Command Sgt. Maj. Mark A. Morgan replaced Command Sgt. Maj. Stanley O. Richards, who assumed responsibility during the same ceremony two years ago. Distinguished leaders, logisticians and guests from across the region and even higher headquarters stateside joined German allies, Family members, friends, brigade personnel and well-wishers for the morning ceremony. The outgoing commander played a key role in such major initiatives as the establishment of the European Activity Set in Europe, creating EAS sites in Mannheim, Lithuania, Romania and Bulgaria in the process. During Bertulis’ tenure, the AFSB reset more than 700 mine resistant all-terrain vehicles at Leghorn Army Depot, Italy, to meet industrial standards, established a logistics support team to assist U.S. Army Africa and deployed a brigade forward command post to Poland in support of Anakonda ’16. Bertulis, a product of the Chicago suburbs who calls Wood Dale home, will serve as deputy director of logistics at U.S. European Command in Stuttgart during his next assignment. The outgoing command sergeant major, who served as senior enlisted leader of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command as well as the 405th AFSB during the last quarter of his tenure, spearheaded important qualityof-life initiatives such as the Civilian Wellness and Fitness Program and organized training events reinforcing safety, security and leader development in addition to his role in operational missions. The Phenix City, Alabama, native will serve as logistics sergeant major at U.S. Army Africa headquarters in Vicenza, Italy, during his next assignment. Maj. Gen. Kevin G. O’Connell, commanding general of Army Sustainment Command — the AFSB’s higher headquarters — presided over the ceremony. The Clinton, Maryland, native thanked guests Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, the U.S. Army Europe commanding general, and Maj. Gen. Duane Gamble, the 21st TSC commanding general, for their support of

405th personnel and mission requirements. The 405th AFSB command team, O’Connell said, “has done amazing things for the past two years. We have seven of these AFSBs across the globe,” he noted, “but none have done things like the 405th.” The organization “synchronized all the acquisition, logistics, technology efforts across the Army materiel enterprise, which has enabled the Army Service Component Command — USAREUR — and the geographic combat commanders to operate with the full range of military options. The 405th has enabled USAREUR and the European Command to protect our nation and its vital strategic interests by preventing conflict, maintaining forward presence, building partnerships, assuring allies, deterring adversaries and conducting operations throughout Europe. “They’ve greatly enhanced USAREUR’s readiness posture,” O’Connell added, citing such accomplishments as the expansion of the Army Prepositioned Stocks program, establishment of vital training facilities and support to rotational forces as well as organizations across the region. He also noted 405th efforts extended beyond the continent, including

support of forces employed by “three separate combatant commanders.” Bertulis followed O’Connell to the podium, thanking key leaders as well as partner organizations across the region, praising the Soldiers and Civilians he led during his tenure, and welcoming his successor. “The units and personnel arrayed before you represent the many who get after the daily workload to ensure the delivery of readiness to our maneuver brigades, storing and providing materiel for our Army and supporting the communities throughout Europe,” he said. Noting several critical partnerships and accomplishments, including “Anakonda ’16 and the first deployment of the forward command post in over seven years,” Bertulis emphasized the scale and variety of efforts across the breadth of the command. “What all of you do every day is tremendous,” he said, “and important.” Richards praised his teammates during his remarks, emphasizing the outstanding contributions of the Civilians who comprise the vast majority of the brigade’s work force and the small but energetic contingent of noncommissioned officers who “made up in quality” what they “gave up in numbers.” “From the growth of the European Activity Set here in Germany and out east to the renaming and refocusing of

our Italy battalion to leaning forward in the creation of a new 405th AFS battalion, we’ve truly been through a dynamic time and have accomplished much,” he said. “So yes, like everyone else in the Army, we were busy these past two years. But it’s been a learning and wonderful experience. I’m truly thankful to have been a part of it.” Honeycutt, the ceremony’s final speaker, pledged to keep his remarks brief and followed through on the commitment. The incoming commander thanked his senior leaders, predecessors and event cadre for their support in a concise speech sprinkled with humor and direct address. “Team 405th, you are an amazing organization that has accomplished tremendous feats of sustainment,” the Asheville, North Carolina, native said. “I have been watching for the past year and was always amazed at your dedication to mission accomplishment. Command Sgt. Maj. Morgan and I are excited to be joining your team.” The new mission won’t impact the incoming commander’s commute. A distinguished logistician who headed major support and sustainment organizations from Korea and Hawaii to Fort Bragg to Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, Honeycutt served as chief of support operations with the 21st TSC at nearby Panzer Kaserne until assuming command. A scholarSoldier who holds an undergraduate degree in criminal justice and master’s degrees in strategic studies as well as logistics, Honeycutt taught military science at university level. The incoming command sergeant major, a combat-tested expeditionary leader who served during nine cumulative Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom deployments between 2001 and 2009, spent much of his remarkable career with Ranger regiments. The Beaumont, Texas, native served most recently as command sergeant major of the 25th Special Troops Battalion in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. The AFSB serves as a conduit between Army Materiel Command headquarters and organizations across the region, providing and coordinating tactical, operational and strategic sustainment to ensure theater readiness and enable commanders to conduct the full range of military missions in support of USAREUR and U.S. Army Africa. Among other critical strategiclevel missions, the AFSB manages and maintains APS for use in expeditionary operations. The brigade also provides Installation Management Command-Europe garrisons and personnel valuable supply, maintenance, transportation and life support.

They didn’t exactly give eyesight to the blind, but Knight Brigade Soldiers helped Bulgarian allies see the light during a training mission held in late June. The Soldiers assigned to the 317th Support Maintenance Company, 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, educated Bulgarian counterparts on the capabilities and use of night vision devices June 29, advancing bilateral interoperability. The Bulgarians, assigned to the 4th Artillery Regiment at Asenovgrad, learned about repair systems, standard operating procedures and maintenance facilities during the annual event. Bulgarian leaders shed light on the situation. “I’m pleased with the facilities and knowledge of our American

counterparts,” said Bulgarian army Capt. Ivan Kostadinov, 4th Artillery Regiment. “This is my first time having a relationship with American Soldiers and it’s been good.”

Bulgarian enlisted Soldiers also expressed their appreciation for the eye-opening opportunity. “I am impressed with the organization, the facilities, and the

Soldiers,” said Bulgarian army 1st Sgt. Evelina Servedzhieva, 4th Artillery Regiment. “I saw the logisticians work at a high level at the training.” The training fostered trust and reinforced U.S. commitment to the security of its allies in the region. “Localized small-scale teams trained with our Bulgarian allies,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Carlos Heron, 317th Support Maintenance Company electronic systems maintenance technician. “The training improved their processes and developed better operational capabilities.” The training built upon past events. “Working with our NATO partners from Bulgaria this week allowed us to study the similarities and differences between our forces,” said Sgt. Khano Neal, 317th Support Maintenance Company computer detection systems repair NCO. “Training like this helps build stronger partnerships.”
