T
he Air Force Assistance Fund kicks off its campaign Monday on Ramstein, and it will last through April 10. AFAF is a six-week campaign that raises money for the Air Force Aid Society, Air Force Enlisted Village, Lemay Foundation and Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation.
“We are challenged to be good wingmen every day, and this is just another opportunity to help someone out when they need it most,” said Capt. Jason Glitz, AFAF installation project officer. “With our donations, Airmen receive needed funds, and nobody is turned away from the retirement communities because they are unable to afford it.” AFAS provides emergency and educational assistance to Airmen of all ranks and their families. It also
provides programs such as Phone Home and Bundles for Babies, both of which are initiatives set in place to help alleviate common military life stress. The General and Mrs. Curtis Lemay Foundation lends a financial hand to widows and widowers through assistance grants for various needs. Air Force Villages offers a home to spouses and family of officer and enlisted members who died on active duty or to active-duty members
when tragedy strikes. The AFAF campaign gives Airmen the opportunity to help out their fellow wingmen, whether that wingman works right next to them or is someone they have never met. “Recently, I lost my grandmother to pneumonia,” said Tech. ELEFSIS, Greece — Airmen from the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing’s Contingency Response Group trained as landing zone safety officers during Stolen Cerberus II Feb. 2 to 14 in Elefsis, Greece. Stolen Cerberus II is a two-week flying training deployment designed to gauge both aircraft and personnel capabilities as well as improve the interoperability of the Airmen and their Greek counterparts. Several Airmen received the unique opportunity to practice skills associated with a new landing zone program, which is being piloted by the 435th AGOW. “We don’t get too many training opportunities to work landing zones,” said Tech. Sgt. George Broom, 435th Air Mobility Squadron contingency airfield manager. “This was a great opportunity to come out to Greece and work with the 37th (Airlift Squadron) on foreign soil.” The new program consists of a three-man team, including an engineer, a landing zone safety officer and an air traffic controller. “The team would have an engineer to determine if the surface can support the aircraft,” said Maj. James Greathouse, Air Mobility Command air mobility liaison officer assigned to the 21st Theater Sustainment Command. An airfield manager, who fills the role of landing zone safety officer, ensures the surface remains safe for the aircraft to use. The team’s air traffic controller potentially acts

as a landing zone control officer to guide aircraft moving into and out of the air space. The team ensures there are no obstructions and the surface is free from anything that could damage an aircraft. They also set out daytime or nighttime visual aids to help pilots identify the landing zone. During the training, the team established 500-foot landing zones that allowed pilots to practice assault landings. “(During an assault landing) the pilots touch down, get the aircraft to a stop and simulate dumping cargo or offloading passengers as they may do in a tactical situation,” Greathouse said. “Then they get the aircraft back off of the ground and out of the threat zone as quickly as possible.” Broom said the small teams can set up landing zones for any tactical airlift aircraft. As such, other CRGs are looking to adopt the 435th CRG landing zone program. “It is a unique program as we are the only CRG worldwide that provides a landing zone program,” Broom said. “We are able to support many different customers across
February 27, 2015 (U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa).” The program has the added benefit in that it is also helping to fill a high demand. “Right now, in terms of the landing zone safety officer program, you’re really looking at a small group of people,” Greathouse said. “The special tactics forces that do it are a limited number in high demand.” As more Airmen are trained under the landing zone program, they can help free up that demand. “Through this program, we can train a unit with that contingency response element that can go anywhere in Africa or Europe and survey, open, establish and operate landing zones,” Greathouse said. “It really capitalizes on all of the (Air Force specialty codes) brought into a contingency response group and frees up some of the special tactics group for some of the things they should be doing.” Though the landing zone program is still getting its roots settled in CRGs, it has already been touted as a success, being recognized as one of USAFE’s top innovations in 2014.
Countries devote month to celebrate black history COLUMBUS AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. — Black History Month, or National African-American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African-Americans in United States history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted Harvard-trained historian Carter Woodson. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history. President Gerald Ford, commander in chief in 1976, called upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often
neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Since then, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. The 2015 theme, “A Century of Black Life, History and Culture,” marks a century of officially celebrating black life. Black life and history itself began in Africa, affectionately called the “Motherland.” Slaves brought history with them to the U.S. and adopted the culture of the new land, creating a unique culture known as black culture. Over time this culture transformed itself many times before becoming what it is known as today. So when you experience the celebration of Black History Month, it is an eclectic experience of food, art, music and more. During the past century, AfricanAmerican life, history and culture have become major forces in the U.S.
and the world. In the beginning few could have imagined that AfricanAmericans in music, art and literature would become appreciated by the global community. Fewer still could have predicted the prominence achieved by African-Americans, as well as other people of African descent, in shaping world politics, war and diplomacy. Indeed, it was nearly universally believed that Africans and people of African descent had played no role in the unfolding of history and were a threat to American civilization itself. A century later, few can deny the centrality of African-Americans in the making of American history. This transformation is the result of effort, not chance. Confident that their struggles mattered in human history, black scholars, artists, athletes and leaders self-consciously used their talents to change how the world viewed African-Americans. The “New Negro” of the post-World War I era made modernity their own
and gave the world a cornucopia of cultural gifts, including jazz, poetry based on the black vernacular and an appreciation of African art. AfricanAmerican athletes dominated individual and team sports, transforming baseball, track-and-field, football, boxing and basketball. In a wave of social movements, African-American activism transformed race relations, challenged American foreign policy and became the American conscience on human rights. While the spotlight often shines on individuals, this movement is the product of organizations, institutions and institutionbuilders who gave direction to effort. African-American history is rich in culture and full of struggle and triumph. Even with continued social struggles, each African-American is proud when they hear the national anthem. They enjoy and participate in the democratic society and defend this country and its freedom — those things that just make them American.

GACO turns 12, forges German-American bonds The German-American Community Office observed its 12th anniversary Feb. 19. The office, located across from the city hall in Kaiserslautern, has established itself as the contact point for all questions pertaining to members of different nations living together. Bilingual assistants representing the American military community and the city of Kaiserslautern have responded to more than 33,000 requests during the last 12 years. GACO is set up as an international drop-in point catering to both German and American citizens. English- and German-speaking employees provide information needed by American citizens who have recently arrived in the KMC as a way to help them settle quickly into their new community. The staff assists in handling administrative matters and provides cultural and recreational information. Services, such as linguistic support, afaf, from Page 1

• In an effort to better serve the beneficiaries of the 86th Medical Group, the Ramstein Clinic announced its closures due to U.S. holidays and mandatory training. Closures are as follows: March 12 (MDG training day); April 3 (family day); 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 9 and May 7. (MDG training days); May 25 (Memorial Day); June 11 (MDG training day); and June 12 (family day). This forecast will be amended when applicable. Dental volunteer program
The Ramstein Dental Clinic will start the next American Red Cross Dental Assistant Volunteer Program April 20. Applicants must attend the mass briefing at 3:30 p.m. March 30 at the Ramstein Dental Clinic, Bldg. 301. Interviews will be conducted April 1 and 2. The event will include live music, dance performances, displays and a farmers market. Organizers expect more than 180,000 visitors. Landstuhl will celebrate its Sickingen year with special exhibitions throughout 2015, and castle event days will take place May 7 to 10, featuring a medieval market and music performances.

Step up, step in: What is a line of duty determination? by Staff Sgt. Ryan Crane U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Public Affairs During the last five years the Air Force notified the families of 232 Airmen that their son or daughter died. Although most anyone can tell you the military can be a dangerous job and being put in harm’s way is often just part of the commitment, the most disturbing part about that statistic is 212 of those Airmen died while off duty. Even more upsetting is that, because of the circumstances surrounding the deaths, some families were paid no benefits. In every case, the deciding factor came down to the line of duty determination. A line of duty determination investigation is conducted anytime a member acquires a debilitating disease, incurs a significant injury or dies under unusual circumstances, said Capt. Mikal Nuhn, U.S. Air Forces in
Europe and Air Forces Africa judge advocate. The findings determine whether or not death benefits are paid. “When a military member is seriously injured or dies, certain statutory rights or benefits accrue to the member or their family,” Nuhn said, “but only if the disability or death was attributed to military service and in the line of duty.” There are four possible outcomes of a LOD determination: 1. Condition existed prior to service and was not aggravated by service. 2. In the line of duty, not due to a service member’s own misconduct. 3. Not in the line of duty and not due to the service member’s own misconduct. 4. Not in the line of duty and due to the sevice member’s own misconduct. Nuhn explained how to avoid the fourth outcome in very simple terms. “Always behave in a reasonably safe manner, because your actions
could have unintended negative consequences for your loved ones,” he said. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take a trip to Switzerland to go bungee jumping or hit the slopes to shred some powder. As long as you take all safety precautions these activities would likely be considered “in the line of duty” and you or your family would receive benefits. However, a scenario that would likely not provide death benefits to your family is one that involves alcohol. An Airman who makes the decision to get behind the wheel after having too many drinks, puts themselves and their family at risk, even if it is not their intention. Making good choices and taking personal responsibility is the message the USAFE-AFAFRICA safety directorate continues to emphasize to the command. The wingman concept is a great safety net, but in the end, every individual is responsible for their own
actions and consequences. “By definition, all mishaps are preventable,” said Master Sgt. James Musgrave, USAFE-AFAFRICA mishap prevention manager. Accidents happen, but there are always ways to minimize or eliminate risk in everything you do. “While the younger Airmen have a good portion of the mishaps, no age or rank is immune to mishaps,” Musgrave said. “It’s more of a psychology issue than an age issue. ‘It will never happen to me’ is a common jinx if the speaker is not risk conscious.” As the Air Force Safety Center motto states: “Safety is no accident.” “Be risk aware, not inattentive,” Musgrave said. “One of the leading factors of mishaps is inattention, which sometimes is a result of boredom or a perceived absence of a threat. If Airmen are aware of the risks, they can control the ones that are controllable.”

The program went from a four-stage training curriculum with Combatives Levels 1-4, to a three stage with Basic Combatives Course, Tactical Combatives Course and Combatives Master Trainer Course. With newly educated master trainers finally making their way throughout the Army, Soldiers are beginning to see and feel the new curriculum. Soldiers from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command’s 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery and Air Force civilians attended a Tactical Combatives Course Feb. 2 to 12 on Ramstein. The changes in the MACP came after a review of the previous curriculum and its applications to the Army as a whole. Schwier-Morales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Air Force recently named an 86th Medical Group Airman the 2014 Public Health Airman of the Year. Senior Airman Allen Cherry, 86th Aerospace Medicine Public Health technician, won the award for his achievements in preventative medicine and food safety and efforts in community outreach. Cherry’s supervisor, Tech. Sgt. Ireneo Alfaro, 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron NCO in charge of force health management, said that during his two years at Ramstein, Cherry has continually surpassed the expectations and standards set before him, prompting him to nominate Cherry for the recognition. “This is the first time I have experienced maturity, credibility, hard work, commitment and dedication like this from a new Airman,” Alfaro said. “I am proud to be his supervisor.” Throughout the year, Cherry developed a malaria pocket guide that was carried into Africa by more than 5,000 U.S. military members, completed 27 details as an honor guardsman, recruiting 10 new Airmen, and secured more than $8 million worth of food for 17 countries in Europe. “I don’t want to serve half-heartedly,” Cherry said. “I want to serve to the finest of my ability and give it all I have. The Air Force wants the best of the best, so I am trying to be the best of the best that I can be.” Cherry captured the 86th Airlift Wing Airman of the Year as well as a below-the-zone promotion to senior airman. Alfaro said that while Cherry’s work was stellar, he used his off-duty time to help others.

He also served as vice president of both the Airmen’s Dorm Council and Rising Four. “I love working with the kids,” said Cherry. “I want to instill hard work and teamwork with the kids, because they are the future and, as the older generation retires, my generation and the kids will be stepping up.” Cherry is part of a large team of public health Airmen servicing the largest population of
Americans outside the continental U.S. He said he hopes he can use his accomplishment to help better the team and is grateful for their support. “I want to give a shout-out to my family, my friends and my co-workers,” Cherry said. “I am doing my work, but without their support this wouldn’t have happened.” Cherry will now compete at Air Force level for the Airman of the Year award; however, he said that no matter what, he has no thoughts of letting up and hopes he can inspire others.

He has earned two accolades in marksmanship that place him in a military tradition dating back over 100 years. Col. Miguel Castellanos, commander of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 361st Civil Affairs Brigade, 7th Civil Support Command, has earned the coveted President’s Hundred tab and Distinguished Rifleman Badge during his military career. The Distinguished Marksmanship Badge was instituted in 1884 by Gen. Phillip H. Sheridan and was broken down into two categories in 1903: the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge and the Distinguished Rifleman’s Badge. To earn one of these badges, service members must earn points in a
maximum of four shooting competitions each year. Since the creation of these accolades, 3,275 Soldiers have earned the Distinguished Rifleman’s Badge, 1,740 Soldiers have earned the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge and only 392 Soldiers have earned both, said Jay Williams, a former shooting partner of Castellanos and retired Army lieutenant colonel. “In a nutshell, to earn the Distinguished Rifleman Badge you have to come in the top 10 percent of marksmen in the country three to five times,” Williams said. “Earning this badge has been described by some as a marathon. It takes some people 10 years to become a distinguished rifleman.” The President’s Hundred tab began with the National Rifle Association’s President’s Match in 1878 and was a marksmanship competition modeled after the British Queen’s Match. In 1957, the competition was renamed “The President’s Hundred,” and the 100 top-scoring military and civilian marksmen are recognized each year. It is considered an honor even more dif-

To say the President’s Hundred tab is rare is an understatement.” Castellanos’ journey to the Distinguished Rifleman’s Badge and President’s Hundred Castellanos began shooting in seventh grade through a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program. His first shooting experiences were with a .22-caliber rifle from the prone, standing and kneeling positions. “I had an instant capability (to shoot), but I also instantly liked what I was doing,” Castellanos said. “I always wanted to shoot. I wanted to be that guy that went hunting and things like that, but no one in my family did anything with firearms.” While in JROTC, he received the opportunity to join a local Army Reserve shooting team. He enlisted as a reserve Soldier and continued his marksmanship training as a member of this team. During his college years, his position as a reservist
Kaiserslautern American afforded him numerous opportunities to develop his skills and compete. “While I was in college I would come down on orders to go train with my team or compete with them all over the U.S.,” he said. “After I made the team in 1985, I started earning my points toward a Distinguished Rifleman’s Badge, and I competed for the President’s Hundred for the first time.” Castellanos competed in multiple shooting competitions each year, leading up to the President’s Hundred Match. Each year, in addition to team competitions, he had to participate in and place high in various Army-level competitions to earn points for the Distnguished Rifleman’s Badge. Castellanos’ first two attempts at the coveted President’s Hundred tab were unsuccessful. “The competitions during the year got me prepped for the President’s Hundred Match and earned me points toward my Distinguished Rifleman’s Badge, but I didn’t make it my first two tries,” he said. “In 1985 and 1986, I didn’t make it. Chalk it up to nerves or me making the wrong wind call, I just didn’t make the right shots.” In 1987, three years after joining the U.S. Army
Page 13 Reserves, Castellanos received two pieces of good news. He had earned enough points to receive the Distinguished Rifleman’s Badge, and he earned the President’s Hundred title. “The year he (Castellanos) earned his Distinguished Rifleman’s Badge there were more Medals of Honor presented than distinguished badges,” Williams said. “To earn the President’s Hundred tab in the same year makes the accomplishment even more rare.” Castellanos said he was fortunate to earn both accolades that year, because his next goal was to become an active-duty Army officer, something that would consume a great deal of time. Today, he is a Ranger-qualified brigade commander who still enjoys shooting rifles. He said he believes the hard work and skills he learned in competitive shooting led to his success as an officer. “Shooting taught me to always maintain a positive attitude, no matter what the situation,” he said. “I made some bad shots at times, I even had days of shooting that went poorly. I always know that I would fire again the next day, and I could always do better.”

The Black Forest is enchanting Hello, my furless followers! I hope you are having a splendid week. I recently learned a fascinating fact: the enchanted forest used in the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales is actually the Black Forest. It may come as no surprise the Grimm Brothers were inspired by this location after looking at the majestic setting that is the forest. The towering trees, the snaking trails, the monstrous cliffs and so much more just leaves you feeling like you’ve been transported to another world. Though I suspect many of you are more familiar with the Disney retellings of the famous stories, I highly suggest you take the time and make your way to the original enchanted forest. With the Black Forest being approximately three hours from Ramstein, you could make your way there almost any given weekend and live your own fairy tale. Regardless of the time you decide to make the trip, you should find plenty to do as the popularity of the area has made it a year-round tourist attraction.

The open house will allow the public to see demonstrations of the latest technology used in the treatment of TBI, such as the Neurocom, a system used to evaluate patients to determine areas in need of treatment, such as eyes, inner ear or nerves that
connect the body to the brain. Another system on display will be the Fire Arms Simulator, which is used to evaluate and observe the common task of a military TBI patient firing a military weapon. Bluetooth technology and simulated recoil are used to evaluate basic marksmanship, safety, familiarity, judgment, vision, endurance and transition between firing positions. The driving simulator, also a helpful tool used to evaluate reaction times, safety and functional vision, or to assess dual tasking and memory after a TBI, will also be on display. TBI is a blow or jolt to the head that disrupts the normal function of the brain. The severity of the TBI is determined at the time of the injury and may be classified as mild, moderate or severe. Mild TBI, or concussion as it’s more commonly known, is the most common type of brain injury sustained in the military, said Dr.
Scott Swasey, director of the LRMC TBI Clinic. In the military, the leading causes of TBI, both deployed and non-deployed, are blasts, bullets, fragments, falls, motor vehicle crashes and rollovers, sports injuries, and assaults. In the deployed setting, blasts are the leading cause of TBI. Most concussions resolve or get better within seven to 10 days. Some common symptoms that may persist after a concussion include, but are not limited to, headaches, sleep disturbances, dizziness and visual disturbances. Patients may also experience poor concentration and memory problems as well as irritability and mood swings. Recovery is different for every person and depends on the nature of the injury. At higher risk of sustaining TBIs are young men who are performing military duties or have a history of prior concussion and/or substance abuse. Anyone who
has sustained a concussion or feels they may have sustained a concussion should seek medical attention. The community is encouraged to attend the panel discussion and open house to become better informed about TBI and become familiar with the resources available locally. The TBI clinic is an open access clinic. No referrals are required. Anyone who believes they have had a TBI and are not getting better can self-refer to the clinic by calling 5904462 or 06371-9464-4462. In addition, the TBI staff will be conducting tabletop displays at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center and at LRMC during the month to raise awareness about TBI prevention and recognition in support brain injury awareness. Disney world premiere hits home for local family by Ronnie Schelby 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs Members of the KMC were invited to view the world premiere and free screening of the new Disney movie, “McFarland, USA,” Feb. 7 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s Heaton Hall Auditorium. About 30 people viewed the film. Jim Caldwell, senior vice president of Walt Disney Communications, hand-carried the movie to LRMC and introduced it, saying it was an honor to premiere it to the overseas military community. “Releasing this film almost two weeks prior to the official release date in the United States is a way to say ‘thank you’ face-to-face to the Soldiers and service men and women serving here,” he said. “It is a way for Disney to show its appreciation, and it is the least we can do.” The event took place because of a joint agreement between the Army and Air Force Exchange Service and Disney. It is the third time a movie has premiered for service members prior to being released in the U.S. “McFarland, USA” was shown a sec-
ond time at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center Gateway Cineplex on Ramstein later that day. The movie hit home for one movie viewer, Lyessa Mejia. “I’m from Delano, just one exit up from McFarland, California. We were definitely the bigger town compared to McFarland,” she said. “McFarland didn’t even have a K-Mart, so everyone had to come to Delano.” Delano is located seven miles north of McFarland and is known for being the birth place of Cesar Chavez, the famous migrant worker who fought for migrants’ rights. Lyessa’s husband, Augustin Mejia, a Soldier stationed at Rhine Ordnance Barracks in Kaiserslautern who is originally from Bakersfield, California, saw the trailer for the movie while he was redeploying from Turkey. “I had friends who were grape pickers,” he said. “McFarland, USA” is a movie about second chances. The movie, based on real events that occurred in Delano, California, in 1987, takes the viewer on a journey into the world of migrant workers, mainly vegetable pickers, who rise up early every day to work in the fields. JimWhite, portrayed by actor Kevin Costner, is the cross-country coach who believes in these young men, and the results are amazing. “Disney has a complete section devoted to smaller, inspirational sports films with a lot of heart,” Caldwell said. “They may not be big blockbusters, but they are very important stories to be told.”
Watching the movie brought up many emotions for both of the Mejias. “The movie was good. I recognized a lot of the area, even though I’ve been gone since 2006,” Lyessa said. “What I didn’t realize was how poor we were growing up.” Lyessa visits her father, who still lives in Delano, and said she will tell her high school friends to see the movie. The movie premieres in the U.S. today.

Last year the club donated almost €35,000. “Donations did go to American Kindergraves, Kaiserslautern High School senior class, Baumholder Hospitality House, Terre des Hommes, Atlantic Academy, Lebenshilfe, and many other children’s and charity institutions,” said Marlein Auge, the club’s corresponding secretary. The Pfennig Bazaar will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 9, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 10 and 11. His military career soon faded in the background leaving him more time to reconnect spiritually. “While in seminary working on my master’s degree I met some old friends who were commissioned chaplain candidates,” he said. “After some convincing, I thought it would be a great way to finish up my master’s degree. I also figured I already did six years in the Army. This couldn’t possibly be more intense, so I gave it a shot.” Finishing Officer Training School with a pair of gold bars on his collar and a new outlook on life, Boyd said he was excited to be a part of the family business again. “Throughout my early years, I was still trying to figure out what to do with myself,” the major said. “OTS helped me realize what my purpose in this world is, and so began my life as an Air Force chaplain.”
Not long after becoming a captain, Boyd experienced his first deployment to the Middle East, spending time in Egypt, Kuwait and Iraq. “My career has been full of great experiences but there hasn’t been anything like that deployment,” he said. “It was 2003 and we were in the middle of a war … I could see the stress, pain and hopelessness weigh on the people around me. Of course, I felt I had to try and do something. “So during my first worship service, I met with the civil engineer guys and dug a big hole, placed a fuel bladder in it and filled the hole up with water,” the chaplain continued. “Then I held a baptism; a lot of people rededicated their life to God that day.” Though there were occasions when he questioned his path, Boyd said he never regretted becoming a chaplain. Despite a tragedy, he said he held his faith at his side and is proud to have continued a legacy paved by his forefathers, becoming the warrior he knew he was meant to be.

Physical fitness Local sports club holds half-marathon March 22 resources found locally in KMC by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
by Alysha Brandy Fitness program manager Ramstein’s Airmen are dedicated to maintaining their physical fitness and are truly “Fit to Fight.” With a 98.5 percent pass rate on the fitness assessment, personnel demonstrated that with personal dedication and great support, they can achieve an outstanding overall fitness standard. There is a fitness community just waiting to provide outstanding nutritional and fitness advice. The 786th Force Support Squadron fitness centers currently offer more than 50 classes at the Vogelweh, Northside and Southside fitness centers each week. These classes range from intense indoor cycling classes to relaxing, but physically challenging, yoga classes. One of the popular classes, PT Boot Camp, is offered for free at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday at the Northside Fitness Center. This class is geared toward building muscular endurance and strength, which can lead to increased performance on the Air Force fitness assessment. The fitness centers also offer many events and programs to keep members active and motivated to stay fit. One of the upcoming events, the power lifting competition, will be held March 14 at the Vogelweh Fitness Center. Weigh-ins will begin at 9 a.m. and the competition begins at 10 with prizes for the top overall male and female competitors, as well as the highest weight lifted in each weight class category. Participants can register at the Southside Fitness Center through March 6. Other incentive programs offered throughout the year are the running, cycling, power walking, stepping, strength training and racquetball clubs. Each incentive club participant can track their progress at the front desk of the fitness centers and receive a prize when a milestone is reached. The fitness center’s partners, Outdoor Recreation and the aquatic center, also offer fitness options, such as the climbing wall, water aerobics and lap swimming. Health promotions, located behind the Southside Fitness Center, offers body fat measurements via the BodPod, as well as nutritional advice. Through partnerships, Airmen and families have many options to stay physically fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

he running division of the sports club TSG 1861 Kaiserslautern will hold the 34th annual half marathon March 22 in Kaiserslautern. The 13.1-mile course with variations in height is free of traffic and leads through the scenic surroundings of Kaiserslautern. “Each type of runner can participate in this half marathon,” said Angelika Hausser, one of the sports club’s organizers. “Beginners might just want to complete the course, and regular long-distance runners want to beat their personal best time.” The start and finish area will be the Bertha-von-Suttner School (Schulzentrum Süd), Im Stadtwald, 67663 Kaiserslautern. Follow the signs that say “Stadion” and “Halbmarathon.” Start will be at 9:30 a.m. and finish will be around noon. Registrations can be made from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the school lobby. The 15th annual U.S. Air Forces in Europe Martial Arts Tournament will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday for children ages 7 to 18. HOMBURG FLEA MARKET
I went to the much-anticipated flohmarkt in Homburg last Saturday, and let me just say that it did not disappoint!! Friends have raved about this year-round, once-monthly market that takes place every first Saturday of the month. Less than 30 minutes from Kaiserslautern/ Ramstein area, 1 1/2 hours from Wiesbaden and 2 1/2 hours from Stuttgart, Homburg hosts the biggest flea and antiques market in Southwest Germany. It is held in a large open area called the Forum, in front of the Homburg town hall (Rathaus) and district office. The market takes place from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
lot of sellers pack up as early as 1 p.m. You can bring your own snacks and drinks, but there are a couple of stalls with hot food and drinks. Bring your market cart and bags with you, as well as euro coins and small bills. Sellers will frown if you try to pay with a 50-euro bill for a 5-euro item. Vendors are willing to negotiate, so don’t be afraid to haggle! A small notepad is handy when discussing prices with non-English speaking sellers, and for writing down your address if needing to have a large piece of furniture delivered to your home. Yes, delivery and/or holding furniture can often be arranged!
Treasures abound Vendors come from Luxembourg, France and Germany. There’s a good mix of antique sellers and professional dealers, as well as local folks cleaning out their garages and basements. I saw hand-embroidered linens, WWI and WWII memorabilia, Villeroy and Boch dishes (the company’s main plant is nearby), German and French fine bone china and pottery, vintage postcards and stamps, demijohns of different sizes, wine crates and beautiful antiques. I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of vendors despite the nippy weather. More sellers participate during warmer months – sometimes close to a thousand vendors (!), a local mentioned.
