USAG RP leaders outline future vision for Baumholder Military Community during visit from Rheinland-Pfalz Minister of the Interior Story and photos by Linda Lambiotte U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Rheinland-Pfalz Minister of the Interior and Sports Michael Ebling visited Smith Barracks and Wetzel Kaserne, Jan. 29. Col. Reid Furman, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander, welcomed Ebling and his staff when they arrived on Smith Barracks, outside at the Baumholder memorial monument, along with Jae Kim, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz deputy garrison manager. “Thank you, Mr. Ebling, for giving us your time today,” said Furman. “We are happy you are here to see what makes the Baumholder Military Community so special.” Furman, along with members of the garrison directorates, provided a briefing on the BMC garrison services, infrastructure, and missions, focusing on current and future construction and renovation projects on Smith Barracks and Wetzel Kaserne. “The movement of Special Operations Forces from Stuttgart to Baumholder in 2026 is associated with a $500 million construction project to accommodate approximately 1,000 new residents,” Furman said. “By then, the BMC population should reach about 11,000 people.” After the briefing, Ebling and his staff were escorted on a bus tour of the installation by garrison leaders, where Mr. Kim provided details on building plans, identified demolition targets, and highlighted the locations for the new construction projects. The tour included stops at the Castle Rock Dining Facility for lunch, at a town house, and at a stairwell apartment building intended to provide Ebling with a firsthand

look of how the Soldiers and families live on base. In the final part of the tour, the group visited Wetzel Kaserne examining the site where new and updated family housing and school construction is underway. Furman said that today was a great opportunity to see the return on investment to Baumholder. “This community is set to receive an investment exceeding $1 billion over the next 10 years,” he said. “This substantial funding will cover various initiatives, including the construction of the SOF complex, the relocation of additional forces to Baumholder, investments in Army family housing,

as well as the creation of a new Army Lodge. We are thrilled to be a part of these developments that contribute to the growth and enhancement of the community.” Furman said that much of the old housing on Wetzel will be torn down, but over the next couple of years there will be over 400 units that will be built, a great investment for not only the military community, but for the city and district of Baumholder as well. Ebling expressed gratitude for the visit and for the commitment showed by the U.S. forces. “It was very impressive to see all the construction and to get a (Right) Michael Ebling, Rheinland-Pfalz Minister of the Interior and for Sports presents Jae Kim, USAG RheinlandPfalz deputy garrison manager with the “Willkommen in Rheinland-Pfalz” Appreciation Award for his dedicated efforts in strengthening German-American relations at Baumholder, Jan. 29. round-up idea on what is happening in Baumholder,” he said. “I really appreciate the involvement of the U.S. forces here in Baumholder and their dedication to the construction projects. It reflects the complete commitment that the U.S. forces have in this area.” Ebling thanked Günther Jung, Baumholder city mayor, and Bernd Alsfasser, district mayor, for their active involvement with the Baumholder military community. He also recognized Mr. Kim, presenting him with the “Willkommen in Rheinland-Pfalz” Appreciation Award for his dedicated efforts in strengthening German-American

relations by actively supporting local events and engaging with the host community. Furman presented Ebling with an Army coin and a bottle of wine with a display box. “Throughout the Army, we give out coins. Each coin is symbolic, and the one I am presenting to you has both the U.S. and German flags on it,” Furman said. “There is no place in Germany that represents the strength of our partnership and the strong bond between the U.S. and Germany more than Baumholder does — when I see the flags side by side, I think of Baumholder,” he added.

Baumholder Fasching royalties visit military community on Smith Barracks Story and photos by Linda Lambiotte U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Baumholder Fasching royalties visited the Baumholder Military Community on Smith Barracks, Feb. 8. Prince Julian II. and Princess Vivien I., Baumholderer Karnevalsgesellschaft (Baumholder Fasching Club) marched into the Hall of Champions welcomed by Lt. Col. Jeffrey Keenan, commander of the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion and Command Sgt. Maj. Roy Orren, 44th ESB, who introduced them to the individual company commanders and first sergeants. Princess Vivien pinned the Baumholder Rosenmontag pin on each one of them. Later, Prince Julian II. and Princess Vivien I. relieved LTC Keenan and CSM Roy Orren from duty and took over reign. They reigned at Baumholder until Ash Wednesday. “We hereby relieve Lt. Col. Keenan and Command Sgt. Maj. Orren of their command, as your new regents we command: Tomorrow you will all not be on duty until 9 a.m.,” said Princess Vivien I. As a sign of submission, LTC Keenan and CSM Orren received the Fasching Medal of the Session and the certificate of disempowerment. “It is a privilege for the Fighting 44th to once again participate in the Fasching festivities,” said Keenan. “Baumholder has a rich and deep connection between the community and the U.S. Service Members.” After coordination with the commander, the prince and princess had another surprise in store. “Battalion, attention! Dismiss,” said Princess Vivien I, ordering the battalion to stand down early. “It’s something very special when a battalion is in formation in honor of our visit”, said Dirk Kaps, BKG-Chairman, “a unique tradition.” Karneval, Fasching, Fastnacht, or Fasnet is the period between Nov. 11 and Ash Wednesday in Germany, also known as “the Fifth Season of the Year.” “It is an honor to continue this tradition and connect our soldiers with the customs of our host nation,” said Keenan.

Bright smiles for bright futures

Celebrating National Children’s Dental Health Month Hello young explorers, February is a special month because it’s National Children’s Dental Health Month. This is when we highlight and learn how to keep our teeth healthy and shiny. Our teeth help us eat, speak, and smile. Let’s find out how we can take care of them. Tip 1: Brushing - Your Daily Adventure • Choose the right toothbrush: Find a small, soft-bristled toothbrush that fits comfortably in your mouth. Some toothbrushes have fun characters on them — pick your favorite! • Use fluoride toothpaste: Use a peasized amount of fluoride toothpaste or a size of rice grain for 3-year-old or younger. Remember: It’s not candy, so don't swallow it! • Brush for two minutes: Spend two minutes brushing your teeth, twice a day. You can time this by singing your favorite song or setting a timer. • Don’t forget the corners: Brush all surfaces of your teeth — the outside, inside, and the chewing surfaces. Gently brush your gums too. • Rinse and spit: After brushing, rinse

your mouth with water and spit it out. Tip 2: Flossing - The Hidden Treasure Hunt • Floss daily: Flossing removes food and plaque from between your teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. • Gentle glide: Use about 18 inches of floss, wrapping most of it around your middle fingers. Hold the floss tightly and gently glide it up and down between your teeth. • Curve and clean: Curve the floss

around each tooth and slide it beneath the gum line. Be gentle and make sure you floss behind your last teeth too. Tip 3: Healthy eating for healthy teeth • Crunchy fruits and vegetables: Eating crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots can help clean your teeth. • Limit sugary snacks: Too much sugar can cause cavities. Try to have healthy snacks like yogurt or cheese instead.

Tip 4: Regular dental visits • See your dentist: Visit your dentist twice a year for a checkup and cleaning. Your dentist is a tooth expert who can help keep your teeth strong and healthy. Taking care of your teeth is an important part of staying healthy. By brushing, flossing, eating right, and visiting your dentist, you’re on your way to a bright and healthy smile. Happy brushing and happy National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Be a brain warrior during Brain Injury Awareness Month A traumatic brain injury is defined as the disruption of normal brain function caused by a blow or jolt to the head, which can be from a blast wave or a physical impact. While such injuries do occur during deployments, they are even more common in garrison, due to athletics, combative training, winter sports, falls, and motor vehicle crashes. Most people are familiar with the term “concussion,” which refers to a mild traumatic brain injury. Concussions can easily go unrecognized, because sometimes they occur without loss of consciousness or other visible signs. March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. All service members and their families benefit from the awareness that concussions can be serious and are worth evaluation. The Defense Health Agency’s Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence reports more than 460,000 TBI diagnoses in the military health system since 2000. This March, The Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence is promoting awareness of brain injuries with information and resources about how to protect, treat, and optimize your brain.

Protect It is important to prevent brain injury whenever possible. To avoid motor vehicle accidents, a common cause of concussion, drivers should obey all traffic signals and practice defensive driving. Both children and adults should wear helmets whenever one is made for the sport or activity. This includes cycling, skateboarding, or rollerblading. Everyone should remain aware of drivers and other people to avoid collisions during these activities. In the summer, observe safe swimming practices; running near pools and shallow diving should not be allowed. During winter, it is important to clear away snow and ice at home, maintaining awareness of potentially slippery surfaces when in public. Falls on icy paths cause concussions each year. Those who enjoy skiing and snowboarding in the winter should exercise caution and wear a properly fitting helmet. Treat Stop and seek medical help if you think you or someone else may have experienced a concussion. Health care providers can evaluate possible concussions and guide the recovery process. Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s TBI Clinic provides specialized

evaluation and care, including management of ongoing conditions after concussion. Symptoms such as headache, dizziness, balance difficulties, vision problems, depression, anxiety, and more can persist after head injury, and targeted therapy may be required for recovery. The LRMC TBI Clinic can be reached at DSN 314-590-5601 or +49 6371 9464 5601; no referral is needed. Full recovery and return to duty is the goal!

You can stay up to date on the latest research, publications, and guidance for brain health, injury, and recovery via the resources on www.health.mil/TBI. Caregivers, there is plenty for you there as well. Additionally, your health care providers are excellent sources of information and answers to specific questions regarding TBI and related symptoms. They can help guide a gradual return to normal activity after a concussion to ensure safe and complete recovery. Optimize Restful sleep is key to wellness, including that of the brain. Exercise improves focus and memory. You can eat for brain health, too! Dark-colored berries and fruits,

dark chocolate, green tea and walnuts are a few foods which supply antioxidants to combat harmful free radicals. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acid, a critical nutrient for brain tissue, include avocados, nuts, and fish — especially salmon. Whole grains provide long-lasting fuel for brain function. Finally, mental exercise — reading, learning, logic puzzles, strategy games, social activities and new concepts build strong connections in the brain. Universal recommendations to avoid nicotine, drugs, and alcohol are true for brain wellness as well. Be a brain warrior! Your brain is yours for life. Take care of it.

Reflections on farewell of a beloved pastor by Chaplain (LTC) Todd Cheney U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz

The average tenure of a Protestant Christian senior pastor in the United States is less than four years. In other words, much like professional sports coaches, ministry in the U.S. is a revolving door. The COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2022) exacerbated pastoral care and ministry and sadly, many U.S. churches closed their doors. Several pastors — due to burnout — left pastoral ministry altogether. Pastor Burkhard Zill is a bright, shining example and exception to the above, dreadful statistic. Pastor Zill and his wife, Heike, arrived in Baumholder, Germany, in 1993, just a few years removed from German reunification. Jan. 28, the Zills were farewelled by their adoring church family and also Baumholder village friends who could count on Pastor Zill during times of trial and tragedy. Pastor Zill’s devoted pasto-

people, is a tribute to Pastor Zill’s impact. Some of my favorite historical heroes are local church pastors. They are spiritual leaders that may not rise to the level of celebrity or powerful politician. However, they are the unassuming, selfless, care-providers that keep a community moving forward during adversity and change. The German-American friendship in Baumholder has lasted more than 70 years. So much has changed in those years and with it many threats to freedom that both Germans and Americans cherish. And I believe it is because of community leaders and spiritual care providers like Pastor Burkhard Zill that has enabled the bond of shared interests and values between our two nations. To my fellow pastor and friend — Pastor Burkhard Zill — well done, good and faithful servant. May the Lord bless and keep you and Heike as you enjoy a muchdeserved retirement.

The former Roman frontier, and perhaps the most famous of them all, ‘protected’ the Roman empire for 300 years starting in AD 122 when the emperor Hadrian (no need to explain the wall’s name now, is there?) was reigning over it. The very popular long distance walking trail stretches across 84 miles from coast to coast but there are plenty of opportunities for short or day hikes along the way, all of which come with breathtaking views.

Hiking The full hike starts at Wallsend on the east coast of England and ends in Bowness-on-Solway on the west coast. Of course you can also start in the west and head east. Some hikers skip a few miles by starting in Carlisle. The amount of days it will take varies on how many miles you are looking to hike in a day but the average is about 8 with 4-6 hours of walking in a day. Hillwalktours has a handy potential itinerary to help you plan your adventure. There is even an option to have your baggage transported to your accommodations so you only need to bring a small backpack on your hike without the stress of packing as lightly as possible for your trip. Hadrianshaul starts at £7 per bag per daily transfer. There are a few stretches where you can actually walk on the wall.

The wall used to be 10 feet wide and 16 to 20 feet tall but in many places there is not much more than a foot or less left. Nonetheless, just the thought of this massive construction having stood where you are standing all those years ago is quite impres-

Leonie and Maggie visiting ruins of Roman houses.

Since we only had 2 days in the area, we didn’t hike the wall but went on a circa 3-hour walk from our hostel to Housesteads and took a bus with the number AD 122 back to the hostel.

Birdoswald Roman Fort This visitor center has an insightful exhibition on the wall’s history and exhibits the longest standing stretch of the wall as well as other Roman artefacts.

Birdoswald is one of 16 forts along the wall, though this is the best-preserved one. The familyfriendly site is owned by English Heritage, admission costs £8.30 per adult.

Where to stay YHA has a hostel right next to the wall, The Sill, but there is also a hotel, The Twice Brewed Inn, right next to it. Accommodations in Carlisle are a great option as well. For all the little towns in between, I suggest checking out booking.com or airbnb.com. Camping and heated bunks are also an option. Hillside Farm bunk barn and B&B in Burgh by Sands near Carlisle is a beautiful working farm with private rooms and bunk beds. It’s pretty much in the middle of nowhere and you will have to brake for cows during the drive but it’s as idyllic as it gets and I even got to feed the chickens, which decided the 5 star rating for me. Bonus: they have a super cute dog, Roy who has perfect fur and watched the sunset with me so it’s definitely one of the top places I stayed at maybe ever.

Carlisle is the biggest city in the area and perfect for any big city needs like shopping or dining out. Foxes is a little independent café offering delicious coffee, hearty breakfasts and lunches. Hell Below is a vegan-friendly restaurant with great cocktails and a delicious lunch and dinner menu. House of Meg in Gilsland is close to the wall and has excellent scones and tea as well as a cozy outdoor seating area. The Twice Brewed Inn also offers drinks and dinner. Don’t underestimate the museums’ tea rooms as well for they always have excellent sandwiches with mainly locally sourced ingredients.

Vindolanda and Roman Army Museum The Roman Army Museum consists of three different galleries; one on the Roman Army and its empire in general including the different ranks, roles and armors while the second gallery focuses on the work at Hadrian’s Wall and the third highlights the daily life of the multi-cultural army on the site. A 3D movie will transport you back in time and let you experience the wall as it would have looked 2000 years ago. Vindolanda shows the history of the Roman reign with outstanding historical artefacts including the wooden Vindolanda writing tablets, the oldest surviving handwritten documents in Britain. Military buildings, stores, shops, houses and two bath houses can be explored thanks to more than 40 years of active archaeology.

The Service Culture Spotlight program highlights employees who demonstrate excellence in customer service, contributing to the wellbeing and quality of life for service members, families, and the broader community. “Our mission is carefully constructed and crafted,” said Paul Hossenlopp, deputy garrison commander, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. “We provide infrastructure, services, and protection, with a particular focus on great customer service. All our customers should receive a warm welcome, focused attention, and a sincere ‘thank you.’” Starting in 2024, the command has reviewed and revamped the Installation Management Command’s Service Culture Spotlight Program for U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. “We wanted to make this a special honor, elevating it to a monthly award that is presented by the commander in our monthly town hall, so that our whole community can see the great people doing great things in this organization,” said Hossenlopp. “We are really excited about this new initiative.” Hoyer manages both the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and Child and Youth Services safety programs, and is a proven problem-

Education Activity contacted us asking for recommendations on what to do with several pallets of antibacterial wipes they had left over from the COVID-19 pandemic,” Cruikshank said. “During his inspection at FMWR facilities, Mr. Hoyer realized that fitness centers always use those types of wipes to disinfect equipment and was able to get eight pallets of wipes trans-

ferred to FMWR for use inside the fitness facilities. In doing so, he not only saved the command $27,000, but also saved $3,000 to DODEA in disposal fees — and benefitting our environment by keeping those un-used wipes out of the waste system.” Col. Reid Furman, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander, thanked Hoyer for his service and

presented him with an Army coin. “This is such a well-deserved award, I am proud we are presenting this to Curt,” said Furman. “When we do our walk-throughs at CYS, he is always there with us, active and engaged, looking for problems to solve. I just wanted to say, thank you.” Hoyer was also presented with a $250 on the spot cash award.

ABC IN KMC: Baumholder Graphic by Alex Oakenman/Shutterstock.com

by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs When talking about the Kaiserslautern Military Community most people will think of the area in and around Kaiserslautern. But, many don’t realize that the community of Baumholder, located about 50 kilometers north-west, is officially a part of the U.S. Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, which is headquartered at Rhine Ordnance Barracks in Kaiserslautern. Baumholder, pronounced ‘baum’ (as in town), literally means “pretty or lovely tree” and is located within the county of Birkenfeld. The total number of residents within the District of Baumholder, including 13 villages and the city of Baumholder, has 9.700 inhabitants and additionally about 8,000 U.S. military and civilian members and their dependents. This adds up to a remarkable 42 percent of the total population. The community was first officially mentioned as “Bemondula” in a documentary in 1156 and was later held by the Bishop of Verdun. In the early 20th century, Baumholder became a garrison town when the Wehrmacht built barracks and a Military Training Area. After World War II, being in the French occupational zone, French forces were stationed there until 1951 when the U.S. Army took over the barracks buildings and expanded the installation. This later developed into one of the largest U.S. garrisons in Germany and Smith Barracks as well as Wetzel Kaserne are still home to the 16th Sustainment Brigade and other units, such as the 95th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 16th Special

Troop Battalion, 5-7 Air Defense Artillery regiment, 44th Expeditionary Signal BattalionEnhanced, and the 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion. The small rural city of Baumholder experienced a considerable economic upswing in the 1950’s when bars, dance and music halls and cabarets popped up one after the other. Residents found job opportunities in their war-torn region and many a farmer or house owner became a landlord or lady overnight to house the over 20,000 members at that time. But, not all was fun and games and “boomtown” Baumholder quickly became known for its wild nightlife and bar fights far beyond the region. Although it was never stated by name, the town gave inspiration to a trilogy on German television in 2021 entitled “Ein Hauch von Amerika” (A breath of America). The series tells a story of struggle, farmers protesting to keep their fields, misunderstandings between the local population and the “occupants,” but also of mutual respect, friendship and love between Germans and Americans. Baumholder has a lot to offer when it comes to military history and an interesting place to visit is the regional museum “Goldener Engel,” where there are photographs, music, press articles and artefacts depicting how the “American way of life” was brought to a small agricultural town. There is also a historical room at the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Baumholder Military Community headquarters, building 8698, which displays the military history of Baumholder. The site is looking forward to the Special

Operations Forces in Stuttgart relocating to Baumholder in 2026 and in preparation a $500 million construction project will provide homes to about 1,000 residents. RheinlandPfalz Minister of the Interior, Michael Ebling, recently visited the site to inform himself about the current and future infrastructure at Baumholder Military Community. Baumholder has a quaint historic section and night watchmen Dieter Heinz and Ernst Schmitz will lead you through the old town on a walking tour. You can learn about the history and visit the Alte Rathaus (town hall) and Schmiede Bier (blacksmith shop). The “Dicker Turm” is part of the city wall and was built as a thick round tower. Romantic couples can enjoy an extraordinary wedding ceremony from May through October. English tours can be arranged upon request at the city administration/tourist office at email: tourismus@vgv-baumholder.de The Stadtweiher, a natural lake in the middle of town, has a section dedicated to swimming free of charge, relaxing and a kiosk offers snacks and drinks at Strandterrassen. An adventure playground for children to climb and explore and a boule area is a fun place to spend time with family and friends. A number of clubs and associations offer sport activities such as soccer, athletics, city runs, a dog sports club, golfing, fishing and a bee-keepers association to name a few. Baumholder was the host of the Rheinland-Pfalz-Tag (State Fair) in 2007. A number of local U.S. Army units participated in displays along with the German Bundeswehr und U.S. Air Force counterparts. The whole town became one giant and color-

OHA survey empowers KMC service members by Airman 1st Class Trevor Calvert 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs An Overseas Housing Allowance and Utility Expense Survey is open from Jan. 1 to March 31 by the Department of Defense and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Military Compensation Policy Directorate. The survey collects data from uniformed service members stationed overseas and living in private housing about utilities and recurring maintenance expenses. Approximately 44 percent of members in the Kaiserslautern Military Community took the survey in 2023 and the feedback caused an increase in utility allotments of 10 percent.

KMC members who receive OHA, live in privately leased housing, and have been stationed in Germany for over 6 months are eligible to take the survey. The results of the survey will have an impact on future utility and OHA rates. The survey is optional and requires approximately 15 minutes to complete and should be done by a service member or a spouse with knowledge on their home expenses. Spending time to accurately take the survey allows the DOD to set equitable OHA rates for service members. ful fairground with about 100,000 visitors on three days. The surroundings offer further places of interest such as an Oven Museum in Reichenbach that displays 40 antique and ornamental woodfired ovens from three centuries. There is also a special exhibition that focuses on the time of the plague that wiped out about half of the population and the obscure means of combatting the pandemic with leather masks. National Park Hunsrück-Hochwald is partially in Rheinland-Pfalz and in the neighboring State of Saarland. The large, combined forest area is a “hot spot” for biological diversity. The largest number of wild cats in Europe live in the park, who are very shy and need plenty of space and undisturbed nature. As long as they are kept on a leash, the park is also very frisky friendly for your furry friends. To deepen the ties between Germans and Americans a regular “German-American Stammtisch” takes place every other Wednesday. https://www.facebook.com/people/Deutsch-amerikanische-Freundschaft-inBaumholder and Baumholder has been a sister city to Delaware, Ohio since 2011. Don’t miss out on exciting activities and festivities around the year, with the 33rd Old Town Festival taking place in August, a Triathlon Competition in June, as well as a Christmas Market in December. Baumholder may be a small community but has a great impact on the Westpfalz Region. For more information about the District of Baumholder, visit: https://www. vgv-baumholder.de

However, learning to speak German — even a little bit — is a golden opportunity. The benefits of speaking multiple languages are many and proven. And you’ll never be in a better place to improve the level of your German language skill. Unfortunately, many of the traditional modes of language acquisition, like in-person classes, aren’t available right now. Fortunately, however, there are plenty of other options (most of them free) to help you rapidly improve your ability as a German speaker. Here are five tips to get you on your way.

Online courses can occasionally be available through organizations that traditionally offer in-person classes. For example, the Kaiserslautern Kreisvolkshochschule often offers online beginner courses. Ask around at your installation, as well. 4. Put in the time Once you’ve got goals, a partner (or a sense of adventure), and a way to learn, it is important to put in the time. Consistency is often more important than volume: for example, 10 minutes a day every day will take you further than one hour a couple of times a week. Find a way to make sure you’re putting in the time, even if it’s something as simple as a putting a daily checkmark on your calendar.

1. Start with “Why?” This is especially important for adults who are just starting to learn a language. Be very clear about why you want to learn. Is it to be able to navigate common situations, like grocery store shopping or calling in take-out pizza orders? Is it simply to be able to say hello to your neighbors in the hopes that you can someday start a conversation with them? Or would you like to master the language? Keep the reasons for — and the benefits of — learning German at the top of your mind. If you’re clear about why this is important to you, it is much more probable that you will stick with it.

shape. If you have a partner, you’re far likelier to accomplish your goals. Buddies can keep you motivated when you’re not feeling like it, and they can help you give you gentle nudges when you need to keep moving. As a bonus, you’ve also got someone with whom you can practice. Even better: find a native German speaker who will chat with you regularly. You’ll never be in a better location to do so.

2. Find a partner Learning a language is like getting in

3. Find a language app that works for you There are several online options that

are great for beginners and experts alike. For Americans living in Germany, here are some ideas: Army MWR libraries in Europe offers an excellent and comprehensive program through Mango. Using this free online resource can be very useful. There is no shortage of free online apps that can be used via mobile or in a desktop environment. Popular choices include Memrise, DuoLingo or Babbel. These can be especially useful for learning or reviewing the basics.

5. Put your pride aside This is so important, especially for adults. Don’t worry about looking (or sounding) like a fool. It’s the only way forward. So try what you learn as often as you can, especially with local citizens (remember, you live in Germany!). Start small, with greetings and basic phrases. Learn to ask, “Sprechen Sie Englisch?” before saying anything else. If someone says yes, you’ll know you’ve got a safe audience with whom to speak German. The more you use your language skills, the faster you’ll improve!

by German American Community Office Is there a chimney sweep obligation? Yes, home and property owners in Germany are obliged to have their fireplaces regularly inspected by a chimney sweep — this applies to sweeping, checking, and measuring heating systems as well as inspecting the actual chimney. What does a chimney sweep do? Today, chimney sweeps keep an eye not only on the chimney but also on all heating, exhaust, and ventilation systems in a house. They check the safety, operability, and fire proofness of heating systems. Furthermore, they measure emissions of all kinds, and whether chimneys are working efficiently, and gas pipes are tight. How often does the chimney sweep have to check? There is no general answer to this question. The intervals depend on the type of heating system, normally one to three times a year. Will I be notified prior to the chimney sweep? Yes, usually they drop a note in your mailbox or notify your landlord. So, if you find a

Schornsteinfeger note in your mailbox with a date, do not just throw it away, but get with your landlord or make sure to be at home at the time and date specified. If you cannot make it, ensure to call the chimney sweep’s number to arrange for a new date to not miss the deadline. Information Should this happen, the office then sets a second deadline. Depending on the federal state, this failure to comply costs a fine of 40 to 100 euros. If the homeowner/tenant lets the second deadline pass, the authority will act itself and have the door opened. There is a reason for the authority’s power: for safety reasons, fireplaces and chimneys need regular maintenance. This extra service can cost several hundred euros - and that too for the homeowner. Can I simply change my chimney sweep? Yes, if you and your chimney sweep not get along with each other or often have unpleasant discussions, or you simply find him too expensive, you can change him. However, as the homeowner/tenant, you are obliged to notify your district commissioner of your new chimney sweep and that the tasks have been

completed. The process, is however, rather complicated and might be best handled by your landlord. Do not confuse chimney sweeps with “smoke detector inspectors.” There have recently been reports about individuals dressing up as firemen, knocking on your door and claiming to be inspectors to ensure that your smoke detectors are properly installed. These types of inspectors exist, and they also drop a note in your mailbox. However, if you are renting a house, the inspection of the smoke detectors belongs to the responsibility of the landlord, unless otherwise stated in your rental contract. If your rental contract states that the landlord takes care of this matter, then he should notify you of the inspection date.

Should these “smoke detector inspectors” unexpectedly knock at your door, use extreme caution, they could be burglars trying to steal or scout out your home for valuables. Also see graphic on Page 15 on the topic. Chimney sweeps bring you luck! Germans love their chimney sweeps as they are said to bring luck. Practically seen, they ensure that chimneys, pipes, and furnaces are in order and protect your house. But some Germans believe that if you pinch a chimney sweep to get a bit of soot, turn the buttons on their traditional dress with black hat and a chimney broom, or even kiss them on the cheek, this will bring good luck to the person that spots the chimney sweep. Little Schornsteinfeger are also often presented as a gift for a prosperous new year.
