Chapel holds dinners for those in lodging Story and photo by Jacob Corbin

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Office

Your first week, and those that follow, can be a little rough. Facing jet leg, culture shock and dealing with a big move can all be stressful. On top of that, you have to figure out the age-old question … “what’s for dinner?” The U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Chapel has stepped-up to help with at least one of those, bring ing dinner for those staying in the Wiesbaden Lodge. “It’s a nice way to welcome people to the community and to tell them about our Chapel programs,” said USAG Wiesbaden Chaplain Lt. Col. John See ‘Dinners’ on page 8

Arthur Chee doesn’t hear very well. Ask him a question or introduce yourself, and he may ask you to write it down. But it’s only because he wants to understand, and he has no shortage of stories to tell. After all, “Mr. Chee” as he is known, has 93 years’ worth. The former employee of the Wiesbaden Army Lodge, still a fixture in the community, shared a few one afternoon at the lodge. The Air Force veteran laid witness to post-World War II Europe, survived the Vietnam War and traveled just about everywhere. But his story began in Hawaii, born to parents of Asian descent, to which he credits his work ethic. “The people of Hawaii, especially the Asians, did all the hard work on pineapple and sugar cane plantations,” he said. He went to Catholic school and at some point (some of the details are murky more than 80 years later), he was drafted as a classification specialist at Schofield Barracks in

Then he enlisted in the Air Force, and was promoted from private to staff sergeant in nine months — an accomplishment he proudly mentioned twice. He came to Europe in 1945. “When I came over it was nothing but bombed-out buildings and ashes,” he recalled. Since then, he was stationed in Ramstein twice, Wiesbaden three times and Lindsey Air Station

twice. Bad Kissingen, Munich, Paris and London were also stations, and he travelled all over – once driving from Munich to Monaco because he “wanted to see what it was like.” “All the millionaires had yachts in the harbor and the ladies used to wear furs in the dead of summer,” he said. While stationed in Saigon during the Vietnam War, and then northern Thailand, he visited Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tokyo and the Philippines while on R+R. At Clark Air Base in the Philippines, he observed the Filipino natives who lived there. The men took care of livestock and crops, and the women worked as house maids and cooks and in the military laundry shop. But a favorite destination? He has none — “I have no favorite place because each place is different and unique in its own way,” he said. All the traveling left little time for long-term relationships. He mentioned only a brother and sisterin-law in Hawaii, no children or See ‘Service’ on page 3

Commentary Feedback:

How are you dealing with the summer heat?

Sgt. Phillip Pearson “I’m from Florida. I’m always hot because I’m always outside. I love it except when I’m in my room where there’s no AC.”

Sgt. Maj. Ronny Rämsch “Actually I use a fan because in Germany we don’t have A/C. I keep my windows and doors closed during the day and open them up at night.”

Maj. Mark Van Horn “I bought new fans, started making ice tea, and I don’t drink coffee anymore because it’s too hot.”

Maj. William Matheny “This is easy. I’m from South Carolina so this is too easy. It was 106 when I flew out.”

Racquel Thompson “Just living through it. We have A/C in the MJ office with fans constantly going and drinking lots of water.”

Walking up and down the incline to the parking lot caused immense pain and you are forced to do the same thing upon leaving. I understand the ACP configuration is temporary but this was not well thought-out for those of us with a disability. Response: Thank you for bringing this concern to our attention. Our Directorate of Emergency Services will authorize vehicles with handicapped passengers to pull up near the guard building for sign in — we are installing a sign that will indicate this. Sign-out can also be accomplished by an able-bodied person taking the sponsor ID card to the guard house. Thanks again for your comment as it will benefit other disabled community members.

Aukamm parking

Susan P. said: I wanted to point out a parking problem in Aukamm. When you turn right onto Westfalenstrasse people are frequently parking on the side of the road by the trash cans, causing problems for the right-of-way in that small passing area, especially when they have sports in that field. A no-parking sign really should be put there. Response: Thank you for your comment on the parking along Westfalenstrasse. We will look at it and determine the best solution to provide safe travel in that area. I appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

Legal Advice: Doing business in Germany U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Legal Office This article provides basic information on compliance with host nation registration and tax laws for those considering pursuing a self-employment activity in Germany. In accordance with the governing international agreements between the U.S. and Germany, business activities of U.S. personnel in Germany are generally subject to all applicable host nation laws. Such activities could include services provided under a contract with the U.S. government such as referees, organists, financial advisors and fitness instructors. Also included are those engaged in independent activities, such as Family child care providers, Pampered Chef organizers, consultants, teachers, translators, personal trainers, artists, DJs, etc. It does not matter whether the activity serves American citizens only or whether it is performed solely on a military installation. Business registration There exists no general licensing requirement for businesses in Germany. However, many business activities – not all – require registration with the local trade office (Gewerbeamt). At the trade office, you will submit your business plan and will be asked to fill out a questionnaire. If your business activity requires registration, the trade office will automatically inform the tax office (Finanzamt). The trade office will furthermore inform you if any other permits (see under 4. below) are required to perform your business activ-

ity. A registration fee will be charged. The Wiesbaden trade office is located at Alcide-de-Gasperi-Straße 2, 65197 Wiesbaden and is open Monday from 8 a.m. to noon, Wednesday from 8 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 6 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. Taxes Persons engaged in business activities are generally required to pay German income tax (Einkommensteuer). Their business may also be subject to turnover tax (19 percent Umsatzsteuer), in which case it must bill their customers value added tax (VAT). If the business is considered a trade (Gewerbe) and generates earnings beyond a certain threshold, municipal trade tax (Gewerbesteuer) is another consideration. Therefore, any business activity – whether it requires the registration of a trade or not – must be registered with the local tax office and be assigned a tax identification number (Steueridentifikationsnummer). If your business activity does not require registration with the local trade office, you must contact the tax office yourself. The Wiesbaden Finanzamt is located at Dostojewskistraße 8, 65187 Wiesbaden and is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m. to noon. Your business plan should contain an estimate of expected annual receipts and expenses. The tax office will set up a quarterly payment schedule based on your input. Once your business has gone into operation, you must keep records of receipts/expenses (Einnahmenue-

berschussrechnung). The German tax office can provide information regarding exemption amounts and income thresholds and will answer general questions. However, you may consider hiring a German accountant and/or tax advisor (Steuerberater). You should inform your Steuerberater of your special NATO SOFA status, which allows you to remain subject to “limited taxation” (beschränkte Steuerpflicht). You may wish to avoid declaring yourself ordinarily resident by opting for unlimited taxation (unbeschränkte Steuerpflicht), as this may endanger your SOFA status. Notwithstanding your reporting requirements to German authorities, as a U.S. citizen or resident alien, you continue to be subject to U.S. taxation. Your foreign business income is reported on Form 1040, Schedule C. In order to avoid double taxation, you may avail yourself of a tax credit for host nation taxes paid (Form 1116), or an exclusion of foreign earned income (Form 2555.) Insofar as self-employment tax is concerned, you are subject to German self-employment laws for business activities conducted in Germany and exempt from US selfemployment tax. In order to document this to the Internal Revenue Service, you must obtain a so-called “Certificate of Coverage” from the German social security office. Customs You may not use privileges derived from your NATO SOFA status for your private business. For example, you cannot use your APO mailing address, your U.S. Army Europe plated car, or

customs and tax-free items for your private business. Doing so would constitute a violation of customs regulations and could adversely affect your privileges. Permits If you have SOFA status because you are an active duty military member, a family member, or member of the civilian component, you do not need to obtain a residence permit (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung) or work permit (Arbeitsgenehmigung) to operate your business. However, once you lose your SOFA status, you must obtain these permits. Depending on the type of activity, other permits may be required. For example, if your business is considered a skilled craft, you may also want to consult the chamber of skilled crafts (Handwerkskammer, located at Bierstadter Straße 45, 65189 Wiesbaden) to get more information. If your business is dealing with food items, you should contact the German Health Office (Gesundheitsamt), located at Konradinerallee 11, 65189 Wiesbaden. Guidance This information paper provides only general guidance regarding the obligation and process for registering a profit-making activity in Germany. It is not intended for specific legal advice regarding those obligations and should not be used as such. The Legal Assistance Office is prohibited by regulation from rendering case-specific advice on employment related matters or establishing and operating a private businesses you may want to retain the services of a German tax advisor, accountant or attorney.

portion of the base, near the old MP station (the building is being renovated). This poses a problem because at times it is a very busy intersection and when I try and cross it can get complicated. People make lastminute changes in their driving, i.e. a car in the roundabout may switch to the straight lane last minute, which creates a safety concern. Thank you for your time. Response: Thank you for your comment. We reviewed this issue just a couple of weeks ago and decided to install two crosswalks at the old Main Gate area. The first is designed to cross from the ACP

sidewalk to Weberstrasse; the second crosswalk is designed to connect both sidewalks across Boyd Boulevard (Old Main Gate). The Directorate of Public Works will complete this project shortly. Additionally, as we continue with our progress on Weberstrasse we will strategically place crosswalks where we want to direct community members to cross safely.

Kudos for GA Fest

Elizabeth G. said: I wanted to thank everyone for the wonderful German-American Friendship Festival. My husband and I were able to visit several times and enjoyed the food, rides, and general atmosphere. We loved that it was

such a great mixture of typical American fair foods with the favorite German fair foods, like meat on a stick, smoked salmon and crepes. The discounted day and free rides morning were especially fun, since we could have access to more activities on a budget. I know it took a lot of effort and teamwork to pull it off, so great work everyone!

If you treat people fairly they will react in a fair way also.” It’s a lesson he’s led his whole life, into civil service after active duty. Jim Weber, hotel manager, said Mr. Chee is someone that has always been very conscience of his environment and the people around him. “I could always count on Mr. Chee to be honest and respectful to all he came in contact with,” he said.

Riders get revved up for Motorcycle Safety Day Story and photos by William B. King

5th Signal Command Public Affairs Office

Several riders from the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden community gathered for summer riding season refresher training during Motorcycle Safety Day July 17 at McCully Barracks. The training, hosted by 2nd Signal Brigade, was for licensed riders of various skill levels and meant to increase riders’ knowledge a n d experience by assessing their skill, style and risk. Bob Wise of 2nd Signal Brigade, the primary instructor for the day, said it’s important to do routine training and exercises on motorcycle safety and handling your motorcycle properly. “It’s a shame, but far too many

military bikers end up in an accident because they’re not practicing their skills,” Wise said. Spc. Robert Luurtsema, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Signal Brigade, said the Motorcycle Safety Day training focused on quick stop, box turns, “s turns” and slow rolls. As motorcycle safety program representative for 2nd Signal Brigade, Luurtsema said he checks personal protective equipment and ensures all training and paperwork is up to date for riders in his unit. “The motorcycle program instills safety, camaraderie and morale for fellow riders and Soldiers,” Luurtsema added. One of the recurring themes from instructors and students alike was that no matter a rider’s skill or experience level, it’s always important to review the basics of riding and safety. First Lt. Phillip Hoying, 24th Military Intelligence Battalion, a student at the training with five years’ riding experience, said the training gave riders a chance to practice what happens in emergency situations. “I think it’s important for motorcycle riders to have the opportunity to do training like this because it gives us the

A lot of times when you’re on the road you have to deal with emergency situations that come up because of other drivers not being courteous — this is an opportunity to practice what happens in those situations,” Hoying said. After the initial refresher training per iod at McCully Barracks, the group then went on a ride through the area before

returning to Clay Kaserne for an afteraction review. Luurtsema, who’s been riding for about 10 years, said if there are any beginners who want to get into riding, then they should not hesitate to give it a try. “It’s an experience that I think everyone should endure in their lifetime,” Luurtsema said. “I call it freedom.”

Life as an AFN DJ Commentary by Paul “the Brit” Hughes AFN Wiesbaden

A week in the life of a disc jockey at AFN can go by pretty quickly. Mondays start by eagerly looking at the week ahead and searching for great material. What guests do I have coming in? What topics can I cover with them? What is happening in the community? Who can I meet? Generally by Friday at 10 a.m., you can emerge exhausted and eagerly looking ahead to the weekend. Sometimes, though, and I wish it happened more often, talking points come to you. Answering a knock at the door to the AFN Studios on Clay Kaserne at the beginning of the week, a young man and his mother wore nervous smiles. “Hello, we were wondering if AFN could publicize our event?” the asked. After a couple of quick probing questions, it was definitely something we would want to help out with. Elijah Tenbrink, a slender, slightly selfconscious teenager, carrying himself with a meekness coupled with nervous enthusiasm followed me in to studio A to record his firstever interview. Elijah’s mother Lea joined us and proved a useful prompt to Elijah to help create a great interview. This was then used for broadcasting throughout the week, publicizing a bake sale he had to raise funds. In general, the morning show is a busy one. There is a lot of information to share with the garrison–events, dates, advisories and weather being just a few things. I first aired the interview the day after it was recorded where upon I received a call into the studio from a Ricky

Bly. Bly is a U.S. expat living in Germany, an ex–Eagle Scout and self-titled “Army Brat.” Ricky’s father served as a first sergeant in Germany and had recently passed away. Ricky, a well-spoken man with a perpetual hint of excitement in his voice, wanted to donate to a community that he remembers so well, even though he lives away from it. Ricky donated $500 to Elijah’s target of $1,500. Just like that. I got a hold of Elijah and his mother and invited them to come back into the studio, where I broke the news to him of this donor live on air, they were both amazed at the generosity of Ricky. Elijah went ahead with his bake sale on Clay Kaserne where he and his fellow scouts from Troop 107 sold cakes and other mouthwatering treats throughout the day and by the Friday in the same week, he was back on the morning show to tell us that he had raised nearly $1,500 for this cause! So what is the cause? A community garden for the residents of Hainerberg, as part of Elijah’s Eagle Scout project. Young men and youth organizations continue to make our worlds and our communities a better place, young adults like Elijah lead by example, learning respect, discipline and community spirit in an environment where they can explore and make new friends. Sometimes the causes they support are close to our hearts and I am both humbled and grateful to be part of such a wonderful community. It is a privilege to be able to help in areas like this and to every day serve America’s best. Tune into me, Paul “The Brit” daily, from 6 to 10 a.m. on 98.7 FM AFN Wiesbaden.

Kaiser. “It’s also a great way to say good bye to people leaving.” Kaiser said the first dinners like this were held in Belguim, and when the USAG Wiesbaden Chapel heard about it, they thought it’d be great thing to do for the community. Daniele Bradford, an extremely recent arrival (at the time of the interview, she’d been in Wiesbaden for two days), said it was very thoughtful of the Chapel to hold the dinners. “Trying to figure out what to cook (right now) is hard,” she said. “So this is very helpful.” Memories of their time in the lodge

even helped compel some of the volunteers helping the chapel serve dinner. “Having lived in the lodge for over a month, I know how hard it was to plan dinner for a family,” said Melinda Grimes, who’s been in Wiesbaden for two months. “I thought it was a great idea and wanted to help.” Grimes also had some advice for those newly arrived to the garrison. “There are tons of resources here, take advantage of them,” she said. “Also, get out, you don’t meet anyone sitting in your room. Explore!” Photo by Jacob Corbin The chapel is holding the dinners every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. until Aug. Print Shop offers cutting-edge service By Karl Weisel

Need a new business card? How about a poster or banner to publicize an upcoming event? Wiesbaden’s Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Print Shop can take care of those needs and much more, according to shop employee, Nikolas Rivera. “We offer the personal touch — communicating with a real person — to meet your needs. We can handle everything from business cards to banners, personalized cups to signs,” said Rivera. Located above the Little Italy Restaurant and Catering Center in the Community Activity Center, people can walk in during normal hours of operation — weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. — to get help with their printing project. “The biggest thing is that some people don’t know that we’re here,” Rivera said. “It’s really important for people to know that they don’t have to establish a connection off post for their printing needs. And price-wise – you’ll be saving a lot of money.” Rivera estimated that community members can save an average of 25-50 percent off of what they would normally pay on the German economy. “The main thing is that we’re not one of those impersonal, big business print shops. Thomas Jefferson’s historic visit honored in Hochheim vineyards Story and photos by Shayna Brouker

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Office

“We could in the United States make as great a variety of wines as are made in Europe, not exactly of the same kinds, but doubtless as good,” Thomas Jefferson said of wine, which he considered “necessary to life.” Perhaps this is what the author of the Declaration of Independence and third president of the United States had in mind when from April 6-10, 1788, America’s first diplomat stationed in Paris visited Hochheim am Main. After tasting a Hochheim wine in Frankfurt, he decided he had to go straight to the source. There, he sampled the oldest vintage — a 1726 Riesling. He was so enamored with the varietal he bought 100 vines for his garden in Paris. “The vines, which I took from Hochheim, thrive in my garden and will cross the Atlantic next winter in order to offer a glass of hock from our own production can,” he wrote to a friend. The vines, unfortunately, did not make it to Virginia. But the friendship survived. To this day, Loudoun County, neighboring Jefferson’s famed Monticello, maintains a sister-county partnership with MainTaunus-Kreis, where Hochheim resides. The counties have a student and civic exchange program. Two hundred twenty-seven years later, modern-day diplomats gathered July 22 in those same vineyards to unveil a plaque in Jefferson’s honor, with the Frankfurt U.S. Consul General, Kevin Milas and U.S. Army

More than 80 people signed up for a 90-minute session of warrior ones, low cobras, and downward facing dogs with certified yoga instructor, Capt. Eric Schweppe. Schweppe, a Joint Operations Center battle captain with the 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, started the Bagram Power Yoga – Afghanistan, group shortly after deploying here in November. “The goal is to practice yoga that will strengthen physical, mental, and spiritual resiliency of service members and civilians,” he said. He primarily teaches Baptiste-inspired Power Vinyasa Yoga, a combination of deep breathing and sequenced groups of flowing yoga postures. Because he received donations of mats, blocks, and straps, he’s able to teach 10 classes a week. He said yoga is important because it opens the nervous system, improves mind-body communication and the cardiovascular system, and lowers blood pressure. “Yoga makes people feel great,” he said. “Think of it this way – most of the day we breathe just to stay barely conscious. Controlled, deep breathing encourages mindfulness and presence in the current moment. It takes you away from thinking about the past and future, depression and anxiety.” Schweppe’s Power Yoga Basics classes are held Tuesdays through Sundays at the Napa Studio and Coalition Gym. He also teaches Power Hour Yoga and an Edge Class. And he said it doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or advanced – anyone can go to any class. He said in Power Hour, the class flows through some slightly more advance postures while offering modifications for beginners. The Edge Class involves slightly different postures with special attention triggers and boundaries to those with trauma. “I am committed to be of service to the community here,” Schweppe said. “Afghanistan can be stressful. Yoga is a physical practice through which Soldiers learn ways to handle stressful situations by focusing and calming the mind.” He also teaches meditation classes in the Rose

Service members and Bagram community members start their morning off by participating in Bagram Power Yoga - Afghanistan’s “Yoga Fest 2015.” Garden on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. And he conducts unaccredited teacher training. He’s teaching three students right now with five more in the pipeline. His goal is to build a base of teachers to take over most of his classes so that he can focus on meditation and allow Bagram Power Yoga to continue when he leaves in October. Also, DVD Yoga is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Lt. Col. Scott McKee, commander of the 904th Contracting Battalion from Fort Knox, Kentucky, is one of three yoga instructors being taught by Schweppe. He said he discovered the benefits and practice of yoga at BAF by attending Schweppe’s weekly classes. And when Schweppe offered to teach him yoga, he accepted. “About four months ago, one my NCOs [noncommissioned officers] recommended that we start practicing yoga, so we started attending the Power Yoga Basics class,” he said. “Now, yoga is a new passion that I can take home and share with my family and community. Yoga offers numerous benefits to individuals or a community. For individuals it may be to improve posture, reduce weight, build strength, reduces stress, or just to meet people. That’s up to the individual to decide.” McKee now teaches Power Yoga Basics at the Jirga Center Rose Garden on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings. “Our practice is on green grass, surrounded by trees

and roses,” he said. “I follow the same yoga practice as my teacher, Eric. This ‘Journey into Power’ sequence increases peace of mind.” Spc. Heather Mitchell, stationed here with Task Force Thor, teaches Power Hour Yoga on Saturday mornings at Napa Studio. The class is open to all levels with an emphasis on alignment and power. “The Power Hour class that I teach offers modifications for beginners and also more advanced poses for students, who have been practicing yoga for a while,” she said. “Napa Studio is warm and allows the students to explore their edge and start their day with an invigorating practice.” Mitchell’s been practicing yoga for two years and first became interested in yoga a few years ago when stationed in South Korea. Senior Airman Brittany Boll, deployed with the 455th Expeditionary Medical Operations Squadron, will soon teach a variety of power yoga and connective warrior classes to sub for Schweppe when needed. In the Unites States, she attends yoga at least five times a week. “I think a common misconception of yoga is that it is only for stretching but in reality yoga is good for you mentally and physically,” Boll said. “My favorite thing about yoga at BAF is the escape it provides. If I can have 60 to 90 minutes a few times a week to have an escape from the stresses of deployment, I am thankful for that. Yoga does have a lot of other health benefits through different poses. Some help you energize for the day, helps with stress reduction, and improves physical fitness.” The Sunday night Power Down class, taught by Schweppe, is the group’s most popular class. “It focuses on helping people reset from their stressful week,” Schweppe said. “Power Down starts from a gentler place to get to the same end result. Many people feel comfortable in this class because they identify that this is what yoga is supposed to be. Eventually however, a yogi will develop equanimity in both classes, cultivating gentle calmness in every pose. “It’s already such an incredible community out here,” said Schweppe after the fest. “Right now, lots of people are thanking me and I just laugh and tell them ‘Thank you! You did the practice!’ Because otherwise, this place is just a dusty patch of concrete.”

The four women and four men moving from candidates to the corps were part of the 2013 astronaut class, chosen from 6,300 applications — the second-largest number of applications NASA ever has received. “These individuals have worked incredibly hard to attain this milestone,” said Chris Cassidy, chief of the astronaut office at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. “For many, it is the culmination of a lifetime of dedication and perseverance to reach this goal. We are proud to have them join the NASA astronaut corps.” The group reported to Johnson in August 2013 to begin technical space system training, robotics instruction and specialized hardware and science instruction. They have successfully completed two years of intensive training and now will support mission operations and technical duties while awaiting spaceflight assignments. “It is an honor to have these talented and skilled individuals as part of the operations organization,” said Brian

For your health Innovative treatments offer hope for burn victims By Crystal Maynard USAMRMC Public Affairs

Conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan brought a surge in burn and blast wound injuries from improvised explosive devices. Many who sustain such injuries endure years of rehabilitation and countless surgeries. Finding innovative strategies to heal these complex wounds more quickly, with fewer complications and less longterm impact from scarring, contractures and disability is a high priority for military medicine. In 2008, the Department of Defense established the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine, or AFIRM, led by the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine and Rutgers University. AFIRM was designed as a partnership between academia, industry and the government to deliver regenerative medicine therapies with the goal of restoring form and function to the most critically-injured wounded warriors. “Regenerative medicine is a rapidly growing area of science that aims to unlock the body’s own ability to rebuild, restore or replace damaged tissue and organs,” said Kristi Pottol, director of the Tissue Injury and Regenerative Medicine Program Management Office. “Much of regenerative medicine research in the civilian sector is focused on finding ways to reduce the burdens of chronic illness — diabetes, heart

disease and others. The DoD wants to use these technologies to treat complex traumatic injuries.” At Fort Detrick, Maryland, the Tissue Injury and Regenerative Medicine Project Management Office at the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Development Activity is monitoring the progress of two new burn treatments under development with DOD funding: ReCell and StrataGraft. Skin wounds are categorized by the amount of total body surface area involved and by the layers of skin tissue involved, both of which determine how the body responds, how the wounds heal and therefore, which treatment strategies are necessary. The larger and deeper the skin injury, the less likely it is the wound will heal without intervention. That’s where innovations like ReCell and StrataGraft come in, Pottol said. The standard treatment for burn wounds is to harvest healthy skin from elsewhere on the patient’s body and to use it to cover the burn wounds. This creates another wound on an already fragile body and is extremely painful for the patient. ReCell, by Avita Medical, harnesses the skin’s own regenerative properties. In the operating room, surgeons take a sample of healthy skin about the size of a postage stamp and place it into the ReCell device to create a suspension of individual skin cells. Within 30 minutes, the resulting

Capt. Sam Brown rests his hand on the knee of his wife, Capt. Amy Brown, during a flight to Camp Korean Village, near the Syrian and Jordanian borders, Dec. 29. Brown was hit by an improvised explosive device in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 2008, and suffered third degree burns to 30 percent of his body. cell suspension can treat a skin wound, which is 80 times larger than the skin sample taken. ReCell speeds the healing process, decreases the need to harvest skin from donor sites and improves the appearance of the burn scars. StrataGraft is for more severe burns. Developed by Stratatech Corporation, StrataGraft is a living, meshable, suturable human skin substitute that reproduces many of the structural and biological properties of normal human skin. Patients with extensive skin injuries sometimes do not have enough remaining healthy skin to take skin grafts from to cover all of the skin injuries with one procedure. In such cases, burns are covered with cadaver skin or synthetic dressings while waiting for donor sites to heal to re-harvest the site. Unfortunately,

after about two weeks, the body rejects cadaveric or synthetic coverings. The promise of StrataGraft is that it may eliminate the need for donor sites altogether. Surgeons would have a ready supply of tissue “off-the-shelf,” saving donor sites, reducing trips to the operating room and minimizing complications. “The promise of both of these new technologies is that they could be the first substantial change in how burn and skin injuries are treated in the last half century,” said Dr. Wendy Dean, Tissue Injury and Regenerative Medicine Program Management Office medical advisor. “Sparing burn patients the pain of large donor sites, or offering surgeons a ready-made, permanent option for wound coverage could lead to a paradigm shift in skin injury treatment.”

FDA clears new traumatic brain injury assessment device By Crystal Maynard USAMRMC Public Affairs

A new handheld medical device for analyzing brain injuries has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA. In May 2015, the Ahead 200 was cleared by the FDA to help clinicians assess mildlypresenting head trauma patients. The device, which was developed by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command’s Combat Casualty Care Research Program, or CCRP, and the BrainScope Company, Inc., uses commercial smartphone technology to analyze a patient’s brain activity for signs of a traumatic brain injury within 24 hours of the injury. “Traumatic brain injuries have been one of the signature injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Lt. Col. Chessley Atchison, program manager for the Technology Enabled Capability Demonstration: Brain in Combat

portfolio of the CCCRP. “There is a great need for a tool like this in theater. A normal [electroencephalogram] machine is a big piece of machinery and can’t be used in the field.” The device works by measuring the brain’s electrical activity via a disposable headset that is placed on the forehead. Once recorded, the Ahead 200 uses algorithms, which quantify and characterize activity associated with traumatic brain injuries. Used in conjunction with other tools, the Ahead 200 medical device will help assist clinicians in the real-time screening and care of warfighters with head injuries. “The size and ease of use of the Ahead 200 allows medics to triage wounded warfighters quickly,” Atchison said. “Our goal is to not only save lives, but to ensure the best possible outcome for those injured in the line of duty, and tools like the Ahead 200 help us reach that goal.”

Shaun the Sheep has an adventurous day.

Movie plots Pixels — In “Pixels,” intergalactic aliens misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them and attack the Earth, using the games as models for their various assaults. President Will Cooper (Kevin James) has to call on his childhood best friend, ’80s video game champion Sam Brenner (Sandler), now a home theater installer, to lead a team of old-school arcaders (Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad) to defeat the aliens and save the planet. Monaghan plays the team’s unique weapons specialist mystery, they find more excitement, and danger, than they bargained for. But they each might also find an unlikely new best friend…in each other. Jurassic World —Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor’s interest, which backfires horribly. Shaun the Sheep — When Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for. A mix up with the Farmer, a caravan, and a very steep hill lead them all to the Big City and it’s up to Shaun and the flock to return everyone safely to the green grass of home.
