Martial Arts Advice For San Francisco How To Choose YOUR Combat Style, PART 5 This six-part article series provides a brief look at the various forms of popular martial arts, where we would have recognized them from and what we can expect from their training.

Welcome to the fifth installment of this six-part article series on choosing the right martial arts systems to suit your needs, goals and interests. Thus far, we looked at what San Francisco residents can expect from kickboxing, Muay Thai, Krav Maga, Wing Chun and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training and just who might find their core teachings and combat techniques most suitable.

Now let’s take a look at Taekwondo, a very popular martial arts system in San Francisco, and whether it’s right for you!

1 Choose the Right Martial Arts for You # 5: Taekwondo What’s it about? Taekwondo is an ancient form of martial arts that was born in Korea and it offers San Francisco students perhaps the most varied and balanced education in the mastery of the martial arts. Why? Because, in Taekwondo, there is a keen focus on physical, mental and moral perfection. Students won’t only be learning the suite of combat skills necessary to defend themselves, but they will also be tuning their inner moral compass and attaining greater spiritual awareness. Taekwondo has more followers in San Francisco than any other combat system and is so popular that it is one of only two martial arts that are featured in the Olympic Games, the other being Judo.

2 Where Have I Seen Taekwondo Before? If you enjoy watching the summer Olympics, you may recognize Taekwondo because – as it was previously mentioned – it is one of only two martial art forms that are held at this prestigious event. Taekwondo has also become exceedingly popular in San Francisco and you’ll find plenty of gyms, studios and dojos advertising this martial art system in your neighborhood. If it still doesn’t ring a bell, just think of video games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter: they’ve all borrowed fighting techniques from Taekwondo.

3 What Can I Expect from Taekwondo Training? In addition to your physical training, which may include quite a bit of sparring, drills and cardiovascular and strength training, you can also expect a fair amount of meditation and relaxation exercises. Remember, Taekwondo is about mastering the mind, heart and body and each requires its fair share of training! Some Taekwondo schools in San Francisco also teach students to break bricks and boards with their bare hands and feet, which is always exciting!

4 Is Taekwondo for me? Different San Francisco Taekwondo classes will place a different emphasis on the various aspects of this martial art form, so if you’re only interested in physical training and self-defense, you’ll need to be discerning in your choice of school. Perhaps sit in on a few classes to get a feel for what you can expect. Generally speaking, however, Taekwondo is an excellent choice for San Francisco residents who want a more balanced martial arts training experience and who would be interested in taking it to professional heights (given its Olympic status).

Stay Tuned for Part 6 Stay tuned for the final installment of this six-part article series to find out about more martial arts systems available to San Francisco residents and which ones might be most suitable to you!
