Martial Arts Advice for New York –

How to Choose YOUR Combat Style, PART 6 This six-part article series provides a brief look at the various different forms of popular martial arts, where we would have recognized them from and what we can expect from their training.

Welcome to the final installment of this six-part article series on choosing the right martial arts systems to suit your needs, goals and interests. Over the course of the past five article installments, we have looked closely at what New York residents can expect from Muay Thai, kickboxing, Wing Chun, Krav Maga, Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training. We have one final popular form of martial arts to examine, so without further ado, let’s take a look at MMA: Mixed Martial Arts.

Choose the Right Martial Arts for You # 6: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

What’s it About? Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA for short, may not boast the same impressive history as some of the eastern martial arts systems, like Taekwondo and Karate, but what it lacks in cultural identity it sure makes up for in popularity! As it’s name suggests, MMA is a hybrid martial art that blends and draws inspiration, technique and skill from a broad range of martial art systems. Today, MMA is most popular as a competitive and full-contact combat sport, which you will have seen in action if you’ve ever tuned in to the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC). MMA has a huge following in New York and – competition aside – offers students the most incredible workout!

Where Have I Seen MMA Before? As it was mentioned, you will have seen MMA in action in the UFC. It’s also heavily featured in many martial arts films, such as Tom Hardy’s “Warrior.”

What Can I Expect from MMA Training? MMA training is hard, fast and fierce. You can expect to learn a great number of combat elements, ranging from stand-up strikes and kicks to ground grappling and wrestling. Most professional MMA fighters have a background in one or more other martial art systems, with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Karate being the most popular. If you don’t have any martial arts training behind you, that’s alright because there are many MMA schools in New York that offer classes for complete novices. It has to be said that you can expect to leave your training sessions exhausted! MMA training is very demanding and not for the faint of heart. You’ll need to adjust your schedule accordingly to make more time for sleep, for practice and for the preparation of healthy meals that will feed your body.

Is MMA for me? MMA is a commitment, so if you’re just looking for martial arts classes that will keep you fit and maybe teach you a couple of self-defense techniques, look elsewhere. MMA is tough, full contact and requires a significant investment of time and sweat. Having said this, the payouts are fantastic. There is a lot of opportunity for New York residents to take their involvement to professional heights and this isn’t even to mention the killer workout that classes offer. MMA can quite easily and quickly whip you into the best physical shape of your life! Mixed Martial Arts isn’t really intended to teach combatants how to defend themselves in real life situations, but it certainly leaves you better equipped than most. Also, you can FINALLY understand and enjoy watching the UFC your father/brother/husband or even hardcore sister makes you watch!
