TWENTY-SIXTH ANNUAL DINNER CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF YIWP

HONORING RABBI SHMUEL AND AHUVA GREENBERG Guests of Honor RACHEL MIRSKY ARYEH SCHONBRUN Youth Service Award

SUNDAY, THE TENTH OF JUNE TWO THOUSAND AND TWELVE

‫כ ' סיון תשע " ב‬

‫ב"ה‬

Dear Members, Friends, and Guests, Looking back, it is amazing to realize that it is already twenty-five years since Ahuva and I arrived in White Plains. As we reflect back over the years, we are so proud to see how the community has grown. When we first moved here, there was a core group of approximately six or seven families. The Shul was moved to the basement in our home shortly afterward. It was challenging at first, but as the community grew it was very rewarding. The Shul then moved from our basement to the house on the corner of Gedney and Old Mamaroneck Road. Finally, with great communal sacrifice, the Shul was able to build our existing home in our beautiful building at 135 Old Mamaroneck Road. Our Shul is not simply a place to daven and get together, but it is truly a home to the community. It is here that we forge the bonds of love and dedication that make us a family. It always makes me proud when visitors to our community remark that they feel the warmth and caring of the members of our community. Indeed, whatever is happening in our lives, we are always there for each other. I must say that the true guest of honor here tonight is really not me, but rather Ahuva. She has juggled being the mother of seven, seeing to it that I was able to attend every meeting and event at the Shul, and at the same time look after the needs of the community. Rebbe Akiva in addressing his students said it best when he spoke about his wife. He said, “ ‫– “ שלי ושלך שלה‬ what is mine and what is yours is all hers. I can never thank Ahuva enough for all her sacrifice on behalf of myself, the children and the community. We are thankful to all of you for this wonderful honor. It is not merely tonight that is so special but rather all the time we have spent together over the last twenty-five years. These years have been so enjoyable and greatly rewarding. May Hashem bless each and every one of you here tonight with good health and much success in everything you do.

Sincerely, Rabbi Shmuel Greenberg

‫ב"ה‬

Dear Members, Friends, and Guests, It is hard to believe that another year has passed - but this is a year not like any other. This past October we celebrated our Shul’s 25th Anniversary. It may be hard to believe, but just over 25 years ago our shul started with a handful of people and a borrowed torah in the Eisenberger’s living room. Slowly but surely, our congregation grew, first into rented space, and then into the house at 2 Gedney way. In 2000, the vision of a dedicated but small group of individuals was realized with the completion of our building at 135 Old Mamaroneck Road. Of course, a large part of our shul’s growth is due to the leadership of tonight’s guests of honor. Rabbi Shmuel and Ahuva Greenberg have been our shul’s only Rabbi and Rebbitzin, and have led us for nearly 25 years. Their leadership and guidance has not only helped our shul grow, but it has helped many of us grow as individuals and all of us grow together as a community. As you will see from the ads in this dinner journal, the Greenbergs’ reach extends far beyond the border of White Plains into the broader Westchester Jewish Community. It is with their leadership and guidance that our shul not only welcomes in people from all backgrounds and levels of observance, but also makes them feel at home. While we do celebrate our past, we also need to look to our future. Tonight, our future is represented by two talented and dedicated young individuals who we honor for their leadership. It is hard to believe it, but at 17, Rachel Mirsky has been leading Shabbat morning youth groups for nearly 5 years. Rachel brings her energy and enthusiasm into her Shabbat morning groups and uses it to inspire and entertain our youngest members. In addition to leading youth groups, Aryeh Schonbrun has shared his love for torah and tefilah with the congregation. An accomplished Ba’al Koreh, Aryeh has been one of our regular Torah Readers since his Bar Mitzvah. He has also taught Anim Zimirot to the young men who now lead the end of Mussaf every shabbat. As they head off for a year of study in Israel, please join me in honoring these two exceptional young adults. While this evening is all about celebrating our honorees and their dedication to our community, none of this celebration would be possible without the work of an elite group of volunteers. First and foremost I would like to thank Avigyle Gorodischer, our dinner chairwoman, for putting this event together from start to finish. I would like to thank Andy Pressner, our treasurer, for making sure that we stayed on budget and met our fundraising goals. I would like to thank Sheri Krausz for taking on the elephantine task of putting together our dinner journal, and as we honor the dedication of our teenagers to our community, I would like to thank Eden Gorodischer for running our dinner auction. Of course, I always save the best for last, and as I conclude, I would like to thank you our members, friends, and guests - for your generous contributions to our synagogue and for joining us here tonight.

Thank You, Yonah

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Young Israel of White Plains 26th Annual dinner. This year, in celebrating the 25 years that we have been a Young Israel, we are going back in time to when our community was just finding its place on the Westchester map. A time when everyone turned out for the local fireworks and a carnival was not something to be missed. We wanted to bring that spirit of summer fun to you tonight with good neighbors, good food and a lot of spirit. The annual dinner is one of our major fundraisers for our Young Israel and we would like to thank all of you who have contributed to keeping our community a vibrant part of the Westchester community - it is truly a group effort.

We hope you enjoy your evening.

Avigyle Gorodischer Sheri Krausz Erika Berger

Guests of Honor

Rabbi Shmuel and Ahuva Greenberg Rabbi Shmuel Greenberg, our esteemed spiritual leader, is a Musmach of the Mir Yeshivah and a recipient of a personal semichah from Rabbi Moshe Feinstein. His insights, compassion and sense of humor combine to make him a terrific teacher and leader. We all value his accessibility as well as his willingness to answer our questions, whether personal, practical, or philosophical in nature. In addition to his rabbinic skills, Rabbi Greenberg also holds a Masters in Business administration. Rabbi Greenberg has been instrumental in setting up learning programs within the Young Israel of White Plains and elsewhere in the Westchester community. Among other activities in which the Rabbi is engaged, he teaches a community-wide Talmud shiur at the Young Israel of Scarsdale every Thursday evening. Rabbi Greenberg also teaches at Westchester Hebrew High School, and serves as the Chaplain for both Burke Rehabilitation Center and the Esplanade - an assisted living facility in White Plains. Rabbi Greenberg and his wife Ahuva have 7 children, and 5 Grandchildren. Prior to moving to White Plains, Rabbi Greenberg taught at Yeshiva of Flatbush High School in Brooklyn.

Youth Service Award

Rachel Mirsky If there ever was a Pied Piper of White Plains, it is Rachel. Wherever she goes the children follow - be it stories in groups, stomp performances or games in the shul parking lot - they respond to her direction. Rachel actively engages our children and her peers in Jewish life. When one walks through the doors of Yeshiva University High School for Girls a life-sized picture of Rachel greets you with a smile. Rachel, the Honor Student, Team Captain and Stomp organizer races through the halls not only to her next class but to plan the next school event. Rachel also imbues her charges with a love of Israel and Judaism. She developed this love when she was little, solidified it as an exchange student at an Israeli Michlala, strengthened it when she played basketball at the Israeli Maccabi games and will further reinforce her love when she spends the upcoming year at Migdal Oz in Gush Etzion. Ever since she was a small child Rachel's smiling face and upbeat personality has brought cheer to our shul.

‫ב"ה‬

Youth Service Award

Aryeh Schonbrun For Aryeh, the Young Israel of White Plains has been a second home since he was born. At its bima -- as an infant and toddler while accompanying his father who was performing gabbai duties, as a precocious preschooler davening the end of mussaf, and now as a baal kriah and chazan. In his second home he counts as close family many congregants who span the generations with whom he learns Torah, prays, and discusses everything under the sun, sometimes in multiple languages. He has always been a full participant in all shul programs and chesed activities: for many years he was the youngest speaker at the Tikkun Leil Shavuot. He has taught a new generation of young boys to daven the end of mussaf, has led youth groups, and most recently lained Megillat Esther for the kehilah. Aryeh will be graduating from Yeshiva University High School for Boys this year. Next year, he will be attending Yeshivat Birkat Moshe in Maale Adumim, Israel.
