to the summer season at the ADC Theatre and Corpus Playroom At the beginning of May we will be transported to New Orleans, humming with music in the summer heat, for A Streetcar Named Desire. This production at the ADC Theatre is followed by the bleakly funny Glengarry Glen Ross before previews for the Footlights Tour Show: Canada. The Playroom sees the Olivier Award-winning God of Carnage, as well as Woody Allen’s Riverside Drive. New writing is presented at both venues, including Surgeons, a medical farce and Last Among the Long Grass, a new play exploring the cracks in a seemingly idyllic relationship as the Spanish countryside is poised on the brink of Civil War. We also host three very different musicals including Jason Robert Brown’s Parade, and winner of Best Musical and Best Original Score Tony Awards, Nine. In Spring 2013 we introduced a series of post-show discussions, with audiences invited to remain behind after the show to meet the director and some of the cast. These opportunities to engage further with performances will continue into the summer; for more information please see our website. Summer 2013 will be my last season at the ADC; I have been involved at the Theatre for the last six years, and have enjoyed every moment. The production of As You Like It in July includes a line that I think sums things up rather well: ‘I like this place. And willingly could waste my time in it.’ Thank you for continuing to be part of the ADC Theatre’s unique community. Wyrd Sisters Bawds

by Terry Pratchett (adapted by Stephen Briggs) Something silly this way comes...

Wyrd Sisters is an adaptation of one of the best and most theatrical comic fantasies in the hugely entertaining Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett. It is a surreal mash-up of pantomime, Monty Python, fairy tale and Shakespeare, with a lunatic version of Macbeth seen from the skewed perspective of the three alarmingly human and dysfunctional witches, the Wyrd Sisters. It is given a fast-moving steampunk production by one of the most experienced amateur companies in Cambridge and directed by an ex-President of Footlights. Suitable for all ages from 10 but expect mild and frankly comic threat. Pied Pipers

book by James Goldman, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Following on from their hugely successful production of The Sound of Music last year, the Pied Pipers presents what is widely thought of as Stephen Sondheim’s most important work. Time Magazine wrote ‘Follies has, no question, the best score on Broadway’ and the New York Times wrote ‘stylish, innovative, it has some of the best lyrics I have ever encountered’.

Past and present, dreams and reality collide for one triumphant, haunting and unforgettable night when former members of the ‘Weismann’s Follies’ reunite on the eve of their theatre’s demolition. Two couples remember their glorious past and face the harsher realities of the present as the shadows of their younger selves remind them of the complicated steps they’ve danced – both on the stage and throughout their lives. Recently thrilling audiences in a hugely successful revival on Broadway, with sassy, show-stopping dance routines, beautiful costumes and iconic songs (‘Losing my Mind’ and ‘Broadway Baby’ to name but two), Follies is a groundbreaking show that defined musical theatre for a generation.

In Williamson’s Chicago real estate office, the Glengarry leads are in and the agents have everything to play for. Levene begs for the leads. Moss will steal for them. All the men bar top dog Ricky Roma are running on borrowed time as they slip down the leaderboard which adorns the office. Mamet’s bleakly funny tale of bombast and desperation portrays the dark side of the American dream and proves that, in the pursuit of happiness, someone has to lose. This Pulitzer Prize-winning play will ‘grab you by the throat and punch you in the gut’ – but only after it has sucked you into its world. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Play and adapted into a film by Roman Polanski, The God of Carnage is one of the most successful and acclaimed plays of recent years. Ferdinand Reille, 11, has injured Bruno Vallon, 11, in a violent altercation. Their respective parents are meeting to discuss how best to straighten out the children’s unruly behaviour. Surely it will be an evening of mature and rational discussion? Or will it in fact be a night of playground politics and spoilt sulkiness?

Christopher Hampton’s translation of Yasmin Reza’s thrilling play is savagely funny and wildly entertaining.

Pitched somewhere between a black comedy and a farce, it owes as much to the Carry On films as it does to Peep Show. As the Spanish Civil War looms, the Andalucian countryside creaks in anticipation. White paint peeling in its exposure to the scorching sun reveals a myriad of fading colours and deep cracks that penetrate into the plaster. Quietly continuing in its midst, a British couple find themselves torn in the approach of the uprising that turns the country and their world on its head. This new play explores the shadows in the still life of sweet oranges on the kitchen table, finding beauty and darkness in the simplicity of the home. As the militant radio chatters away the tea is running out and the milk turning sour. What, then, could be worse than an unexpected visit from a mother-in-law? ‘The conquest of the earth, which mostly means the taking it away from those who have a different complexion or slightly flatter noses than ourselves, is not a pretty thing when you look into it too much.’ Conrad’s canonical novel is adapted into an epic one-man show narrated by Marlow, an English sailor given the task of making contact with Mr Kurtz, an elusive ivory trader working deep inland. Marlow describes in visceral detail the shocking and rapacious nature of European ivorytrading and colonialism on the African continent at the turn of the 20th century. Engaging with a brutal but inescapable aspect of Europe’s shared colonial history we are left with only: ‘The horror! With brilliant music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, this unique musical combines pop-rock, folk, R&B and gospel styles. It is a riveting murder mystery, a gripping courtroom drama, a moving love story and certainly one of the most powerful new musical theatre works of our time.

I mean, I can throw glittery adjectives about, but it’s not like I’m an estate agent referring to some maisonette as ‘elegant’ and ‘well-appointed’. Shakespeare’s popular comedy is re-invented for the peace and love generation in this swinging sixties production of As You Like It.

After Rosalind and Orlando fall in love, banishment and fratricidal intentions force them both to flee the traditional and oppressive court. They find a new home in the Forest of Arden, where a flower power community is flourishing under Rosalind’s father, the exiled Duke Senior. Disguised as a boy, Rosalind keeps her identity a secret while tutoring Orlando in the ways of love and testing his feelings for her.

The couple’s exuberant verbal jousting is one of the show’s many highlights, along with the melancholy Jaques’ vision of the seven ages of man, the troublesome wooing of the lovesick Silvius and the scornful Phebe, and the clowning of the motley fool Touchstone. by Tim Firth Do you really know the story of Calendar Girls? Why does a group of ordinary women undertake such an extraordinary venture? When Annie’s husband John dies of leukaemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They persuade fellow WI members to join them in posing nude for an ‘alternative’ WI calendar. The play explores the effects of the calendar’s success on the women’s relationships with each other, their husbands, those in authority and others trying to take advantage of what becomes an international phenomenon. The humour and sadness demonstrates the support that these women show to their friend in time of need.

Tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. Full Terms and Conditions are available online or on request. Concessions are offered for under-16s, students, senior citizens and jobseekers. In the event of a sell-out, a limited number of Day Seats may be available on the day of the performance from the time the Box Office opens. Any remaining Day Seats are released online 30 minutes later. Please contact the Box Office for more information.
