Autumn 2018 Season Brochure

Page 1

Our grand re-opening season begins with Cambridge American Stage Tour’s production of one of Shakespeare’s final plays, The Tempest (p6), drawing on British folk tradition and European Physical Theatre techniques. If it is classics you are craving, we won’t disappoint! Our season is peppered with the greats, from Euripides (p21), to Oscar Wilde (p9), and Tennessee Williams (p8). On the other end of the spectrum, we are excited to continue staging new student writing. Our Playroom Season opens with Ham, Egg & Chips (p5), three short plays written by student Noah Geelan about family and food. Over at the ADC Theatre, RIBS (p26) is a part-written, partdevised production, telling the story of cultural resistance in 1950s Soviet Russia. As we get to the end of term, the new musical Cathy: A Retelling of Wuthering Heights (p17)takes to the Playroom stage. Theatre has the potential to introduce audiences to different voices and new perspectives. It is always our aim at the ADC Theatre and Corpus Playroom to represent a wide range of human

experience. This season we are proud to be staging a number of Queer Narratives in both venues. We open with Vita & Virginia (p7) at the Corpus Playroom, a stunning and intimate play staging the correspondence between lovers Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf. At the ADC Theatre we are reviving Lillian Hellman’s The Children’s Hour (p10). Banned when it was published due to its depiction of female homosexuality, it serves as a powerful reminder of the horrors of intolerance. At the end of term we have the new, confessional-style play The Grindr Diaries (p19) – a darkly comedic and unflinching exploration of one man’s dating history. No re-opening would be complete without a few showstoppers. Bringing slick dance sequences and quality tunes to the season, A Chorus Line (p14) is our biggest musical of the term. If you are feeling a bit nostalgic, High School Musical (p27) may be the show for you. This cheesy Disney extravaganza is a perfect late-night treat. We end the term with our famous CUADC/ Footlights Pantomime. The Gingerbread Man (p20) is a treat for all the family, so grab your tickets and join us for a kooky cookie, topsyturvy, curly-wurly story! If our new lighting bridges, ventilation and comfy seating aren’t already enough to tempt you, I am sure what you find in these pages will do the job! We have verse drama, musicals, circus, devised theatre, sketch comedy and so much more. I hope you are all as excited as the ADC team for the wonders ahead. Victoria Collins | Theatre Manager

Welcome to our Autumn 2018 season ADC Alumnus and former Artistic Director of the National Theatre Richard Eyre once stated that theatre has become ‘more lively, more questioning, more diverse, more self-critical’. With each new season at the ADC Theatre and Corpus Playroom, the truth of Eyre’s statement becomes increasingly more apparent. As we begin a new era in the ADC Theatre’s history, re-opening our newly renovated theatre, I am delighted to present to you one of our most varied seasons yet!

adc theatre renovations We are absolutely delighted to re-open the ADC Theatre following our summer renovations. It has been an exciting six months, with ADC on Tour taking us to four venues around Cambridge and the sounds of building work becoming a constant backing track to life in the ADC office, but the team here cannot wait to re-open our doors! The renovations will transform both audience and participant experiences of the theatre. This project began with the aim of improving temperature control in the auditorium. From this we expanded the scope of the project and took the opportunity to bring our lighting infrastructure

up to industry standard. As you are sitting in your seats, look up and you will see our new lighting bridges, which have been kitted out with new, more energy efficient lighting. Finally, we have completely redecorated the Front of House areas of the theatre. We hope that audiences for years to come will enjoy our new plush purple seating. We hope that your interest has been piqued by our renovations and welcome you to come and experience the changes first-hand in our grand re-opening season!

REVERSE COWGIRL

HAM, EGG AND CHIPS

by Bella Hull and Will Owen

by Noah Geelan

Three short(ish) plays about family – and food. In Ham, Flo has just appeared in her first play, and her family are terrified they might accidentally tell her how bad she was. Events play out over a family dinner – Mum has cooked ham, and the irony is lost on no-one. In Egg, Jennifer and Georgia’s brunch party takes an unexpected turn as the dark details of their guests’ marriage is laid bare over scrambled eggs. (’Highly Commended’ by the panel of professional judges at the Downing Festival of New Writing; ‘A sparklingly witty farce’ – The Cambridge Student) Chips takes place over seven nights. When Liam’s dad dies, his career-driven mum now has to make him dinner each night. She’s not used to being at home much, and doesn’t really know how to cook. They eaten frozen chips, watch TV, and try to get to know each other.

Bella and Will shot to fame in the noughties after they won smash-hit TV show Duets! But a decade on, Bella’s losing her voice, Will’s losing his religion, and neither of them can lose those extra pounds. Under the mysterious threat of an anonymous text, they have an hour to prove they’ve still got it. Reverse Cowgirl is a comedy about a pop-star double-act who have lost everything but each other. THE TEMPEST by William Shakespeare

‘I long To hear the story of your life, which must Take the ear strangely.’ Tonight, we hear the story of Prospero’s life. It is a story told around the campfire; one of days gone by. A story told in a night which seems to last a year, from bright spring, to golden summer, to the snows and crisp, starry nights of winter. A story telling of a person at the height of her power relinquishing both strength and revenge before drawing towards old age, alongside her fading world.

THE PHYSICISTS by Friedrich Dürrenmatt

‘It’s I who decides who my patients think they are. I know them far better than they know themselves.’ Murder is just the background at the private sanatorium, Les Cerisiers. The investigation into a nurse’s murder reveals not one of the patients is quite what they seem’. Everyone is hiding a dangerous secret and all are drawn into an increasingly dangerous game to protect it and themselves. Questioning the nature of sanity, the role of science and ‘expertise’ in society, and the responsibilities governments and individuals have to each other, The Physicists is a satire that puts our concepts of society under the microscope. VITA & VIRGINIA by Eileen Atkins

‘She is a pronounced Sapphist.’ So says Virginia of Vita, the socialite wife of an eminent politician, whom she meets one evening in the 1920s. Yet Virginia is drawn to Vita, and Vita is fascinated by Virginia. It is not long until the pair embark upon one of the most high profile of love-affairs in the literary world. Both members of the notorious Bloomsbury set, they share a love of language, of letter-writing, and of each other. Adapted from the correspondence of Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West, Eileen Atkins’ careful composition of the blossoming romance between these two opposite people with kindred spirits is witty, tender, and utterly charming. THE GLASS MENAGERIE by Tennessee Williams

Tennessee Williams’ intimate masterpiece, journeys back through the hazy memories of amateur poet Tom Wingfield to his time spent living in a stifling St Louis apartment with his mother Amanda, a faded Southern belle, and older sister Laura, whose crippling shyness and limp prevent her from leaving the house. Instead, she focuses her energies on the maintaining of a menagerie of small glass animals. When Tom brings his popular colleague Jim home to dinner on Amanda’s request, in the hopes of finding Laura a husband, the outgoing newcomer threatens to dismantle the precarious emotional ties holding the family together. During the evening, disillusionment takes precedent over fantasy, and our characters’ lives and dreams begin to look as fragile as the glass animals themselves. LADY WINDERMERE’S FAN by Oscar Wilde

‘We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.’ O.W. is directing a play. More specifically, she’s directing an old play – Lady Windermere’s Fan, by Oscar Wilde. But she won’t let the script get in the way of her vision. This new production of Lady Windermere’s Fan takes an absurd look at the trend for modernising our theatrical favourites. Should we stick to what we know? Or translate Wilde’s tea-parties into all-night raves? Somewhere between a modernisation and a ‘true’ interpretation of the text, this play within a play challenges our expectations while maintaining all of Wilde’s keenly-observed characters – and his trademark British wit.

I’M HAVING A WONDERFUL TIME IN BADENBADEN by J. L. O’Sullivan

Alone, abroad and in the midst of a housing crisis, it only takes one missed train for Allie to lose all sense of time. Sustaining themself on panic-bought oranges and the sounds of the sixties, Allie dithers between frantic farce and semi-lucid lethargy in the confines of a budget hotel room, when on discovering seven blank postcards bought at a happier time, they resolve to write home - return address or not. But an awkward ‘wish you were here’ soon unravels to reveal a fragile web of uneasy relationships and invasive anxieties.

This is the home run of the University of Cambridge Asia Theatre Tour, who have performed Lady Windermere’s Fan in China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan.

Merging the boundaries between delusion and reality, theatre and film, I’m Having a Wonderful Time in Baden-Baden offers a comical, poignant and innovative take on how we communicate when we’re on our own.

THE CHILDREN’S HOUR by Lillian Hellman

In 1930s New England two female teachers are accused of homosexuality by one of their students. Once the scandal reaches the local community, Martha and Karen’s lives are destroyed as they become increasingly ostracised by society. Lillian Hellman’s The Children’s Hour was banned when it was published due to its controversial depiction of female homosexuality. Now in the 21st century it serves as a powerful reminder of the horrors of intolerance.

THIS BLOOD’S FOR YOU

BEDHEADS

by David W. Christner

Humour is how Charlie James deals with a life gone bad, namely being sentenced to death for killing a cop. When the warden of a state penitentiary tries to convince Charlie to donate a kidney to his sick son, humour is also how he deals with the many people around him who all of a sudden want something from a dead man walking. And what could they possibly want from a man who apparently has nothing? His body, of course. In this dark comedy, we deal with the ethical implications involved with capital punishment, organ donation, and the interaction of the two. PLAYROOM MAINSHOW TUE 23 – SAT 27 OCTOBER AT 7PM TICKETS TUE £8/£6, WED/THU £9/£7, FRI/SAT £10/£8

by Meg Coslett and Lottie Elton All was peaceful at Bedheads Record Company. Who needs sex, drugs, and rock and roll when you have a keyboard with seven different demo tunes and a mildly inept but dedicated office staff? The company even had a musician featured on the Now That’s What I Call Music 2011 album (although this was, unfortunately, the result of a clerical error). But when the unexplained death of one of the company’s star acts lands Bedheads’ two producers in prison, everything changes. As new evidence arises, the police reopen the case – but will it be enough to save Bedheads? Will the law prevail? Does a miscarriage of justice provide good source material for a Top 40 chart hit? Bedheads is a brand-new narrative and sketch musical comedy based around the alibis of all of the dark and quirky individuals that emerge from Bedheads Records! Join us as we dive into the lives of these wacky and wonderful characters, and bring the killer to justice. Everyone knows that the music industry is cut-throat, but not like this. RICHARD III by William Shakespeare

It is 1980 and the notorious Yorkist family has finally made peace with their bitter rivals, the Lancasters. Everyone is looking forward to a period of calm under the new head of the families, Edward IV. But Edward’s younger brother, Richard, has other ideas. A political gangster-thriller, in which we watch a cunning, Machiavellian Richard attempt to consolidate his power. Stopping at nothing and noone we see him scheming, tricking and murdering. This modern re-adaptation sees Shakespeare’s least redeeming character seamlessly slot into the modern world by acquiring the position most suited to them: that of a scheming mobster. THE HOUSE THEY GREW UP IN by Deborah Bruce

Living behind a lifetime of clutter, siblings Daniel and Peppy are isolated from the rest of the world. The indefatigable Peppy cares for the autistic Daniel, desperately clinging on to a fragile illusion of life. She finds secret company in Homer’s Penelope, and Veronese’s La Bella Nani, whilst Daniel finds peace and quiet by hiding behind his headphones. Their house sits on a residential street in South-East London, but the neighbours have always seen them as different. Following a misunderstanding, the outside world rushes in, and threatens to turn everything upside down. As the siblings are taken away from each other, rumours fly, and their lives threaten to spiral out of control. Deborah Bruce’s powerful play explores both the darkest and the most hopeful moments in the lives of those left behind by society. The people whose houses we walk past every day, yet who somehow get forgotten.

WITCHES It’s Halloween and everyone’s on high alert for what this coven of witches are up to. Double double toil and trouble-ing? Fire burn and cauldron bubble-ing? Or maybe just supernaturally-inclined women trying to have a nice night in? Who knows. Move over Harry Potter, Witches is a brandnew sketch show from a selection of the finest female and non-binary student minds. Get your broomsticks, black cats and spooky selves down to the Corpus playroom for a night of fresh sketches and character comedy. Although take heed, ye who seek them: with this many women left unsupervised, things are going to get darn scary. The witches are here, they’re hilariously sincere, and they’re ready to obliterate their bad rep from William Shakespeare. A CHORUS LINE

music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban book by James Kirkwood Jr. and Nicholas Dante With its blend of powerful vocals, high-energy choreography, and amusing and poignant vignettes, A Chorus Line is a stunning musical celebrating the talented and dedicated performers of the Broadway chorus. The show depicts the final gruelling round of auditions for a new Broadway musical, and for seventeen dancers, this is the life-changing opportunity they have worked towards for their entire career. A Chorus Line is a powerful metaphor for human ambition, revealing the truth of the glamorous yet competitive world of show business, and what happens when you put everything on the line in pursuit of a dream.

UNSUNG HEROES

Two young boys are caught between dreams of becoming famous football players and their need to join the resistance. Two doctors who cannot reconcile with their political ideologies and personal tragedies. A young girl is unable to decipher reality.

Get ready for Unsung Heroes, a mockumentarystyle night of celebrating the overlooked voices of our society. THE LAST OF THE HAUSMANNS by Stephen Beresford

On the South Devon coast, the Haussman family home stands dilapidated and derelict. Its chief occupant is Judy, an aging, anarchic hippy who – after a minor cancer operation – holds court, welcoming her children home. Libby, accompanied by her daughter, Summer, is waspish and resentful. Nick is flighty and nervous, a former drug addict with little to call his own. Over a few sweltering months, the Haussmans hash out their past differences, remember family dramas and infatuations, and day-drink the summer away. Dealing with the legacy of the 1960s and the Baby Boomer generation, Stephen Beresford’s debut play captures the spirit of a generation, and the consequences in their wake. COLD TURKEY

THE BACCHAE by Euripedes

Ritual madness has descended on Thebes. Dionysus arrives demanding obedience whatever the cost. To some, the arrival brings liberation, to others chaos. With Pentheus’ own mother lost to Bacchic celebration, the King is determined to shame and punish the new God. Civilisation declares war on instinct as the divine tears up the mortal. This visceral new production asks uneasy questions and demands uneasy answers. Explore the fear of the unknown as this divine tragedy exposes the cracks in our own moral compasses. The veil of moral correctness is ripped away in this horrifyingly compelling examination of the human condition.

by Joy Hunter

Turned away from midnight mass, Nick, a homeless outcast, faces Christmas alone. That is, until he borrows Santa Claus’ jacket and a young girl mistakes him for the man himself and invites him in to the hell-scape of the middleclass family Christmas dinner. Don Juan feels like the last man standing, and after years of abstinence, is once again ready to engage in more of the debauchery and sin that made his name. Hero or lothario, is there redemption for this broken man?
