Tromsø Photo: Delphin Ruché, Wandering Owl

Tromsø is a major centre for research, education and commerce in Northern Norway. Home to Norway’s third largest university with 15,000 students, world-leading research environments in the fields of polar research, biotechnology and maritime activities help to put Tromsø on the map. The world’s northernmost brewery, Macks Ølbryggeri, is perhaps the city’s best known brand. Tromsø has a rich and diverse sporting and cultural scene, a cuisine that blends local ingredients with international flavours and vibrant nightlife.

Facts • Population: approx. 74,500. • Latitude: 69 ˚N. • University city with 15,000 students. • Polar Night: November 27 – January 15. • Midnight Sun: May 20 – July 22. • Northern Lights: September – March. • Whale Watching: Late October – early February • Average temp. July: 11.8 ˚C. Record high: 30.4 ˚C. • Average temp. January: –4.4 ˚C. Record low: –18.4 ˚C. • There is usually snow on the ground from December to May.

Snow Season • Snow-dependent activities are available as soon as the snow settles, any time between October and January. • The most stable snow conditions are from middle of December until middle of April. • Big variations from the inland (early snow) to the coast (late snow).

Whale Watching Season • The whales come to this region to feed on herring. Over the last couple of years, large herring shoals have migrated very near shore and into the fjords surrounding Tromsø. • The season for the winter whale watching varies, depending on when the herring arrive and leave, but is approximately from late October to early February. • The most common whale species are Humpback, Orca, Pilot whales, Fin whales and the Common Porpoise. • Make use of the light at mid-day during the Polar Night season to go whale watching.

Photo: Maarit Valkonen, Wandering Owl

WHEN TO VISIT & NORTHERN LIGHTS FACTS • Northern Lights Season: from September to April • Northern Lights are most often seen between 18:00 (6pm) and 02:00 (2am) • Northern Lights might be visible for a couple of minutes or for most of the evening. • Northern Lights outbursts visible from Tromsø are mainly green, but large outbursts can also include other colours.

WHICH NORTHERN LIGHTS TOUR TO CHOOSE? • 1. Northern Lights Chases: These excursions go in search of the best possible place on any given night to find clear skies and then the Northern Lights. If you are in a hurry and don’t mind getting back late, then these are a good option. • 2. Northern Lights Experiences: These activities go to one dark, scenic and comfortable location where you have good chances of seeing the Northern Lights, and at the same time can try exciting and interesting activities or experience some Northern Norwegian culture. Choose the tour that best suits you, based on duration, price, group size and what is included.

Welcome to the Arctic capital! Tromsø is an international city with citizens from more than 140 countries. People from all corners of the world live here; Norwegians, Swedes, Chinese, Somali and the Sami indigenous people. Regardless of where you come from, you are welcome in the Arctic capital! Tromsø is surrounded by sea on all sides. We have lived by and from the sea for thousands of years, and that is still the case today. Fishing, marine resources and maritime industries, along with research, satellite technology, culture and tourism, are important and futureoriented cornerstones of the modern-day Tromsø. Tromsø is also known as the “Paris of the North”. We live modern lives in a safe, welfare society with a high standard of living, a thriving cultural scene and countless recreational opportunities. However, the climate is tough with major variations in the changing seasons. Our proximity to the scope and possibilities offered by nature makes Tromsø a perfect starting point for experiencing the unique combination of urban city life and wilderness – in one of the most exciting parts of the world. You are now in the Arctic, which although rich in resources is a vulnerable part of the planet. There is increased interest in what is happening in the Arctic, both politically and economically. Visitors and tourists come here to experience the uniqueness of Tromsø, especially in the winter when the Northern Lights dance across the night sky and enthusiastic guests exhale and see their breath in the cold air while experiencing snow for the first time.

Dress warmly as the winter storms can be hefty and the weather changes quickly. Take care of each other – and enjoy your time in the Arctic capital. I wish you a wonderful stay! Kristin Røymo, Mayor of Tromsø

Photo: Marius Fiskum

When you visit the Tromsø region, you will discover that not everything is organized. When turning a corner, you may discover something exciting that you are curious about. If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask. Enjoy the combination that the urban wilderness of Tromsø offers; the city and nature at the same time. Whatever you do, please spare a thought for the nature and the environment. Taking care of the Arctic is our shared responsibility.

Seeing these huge creatures is an unforgettable experience, made even more special by being able to hear them as they break the surface of the water. You might catch sight of several humpback whales, orcas or pilot whales as they follow the herring shoals. Choose whether you want to go by Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB), sailboat, smaller motor boat or bigger boat. Help research on whales by sending your pictures to the Norwegian ID-catalogue at whaleobs@akvaplan.niva.no

Cross-country skiing is very much a part of Northern Norwegian culture. A short lesson is recommended for absolute beginners, while the more experienced can conquer mountains – yes, both up and down. Fishing

You can’t visit Northern Norway without seeing if the fish are biting! If you head out to sea, catching a fish is virtually guaranteed. Coalfish (saithe), cod or wolf fish are among the most common species. As soon as the lakes have frozen, it’s time to go ice fishing. You are shown how to drill your own hole in the ice, bait the line… and enjoy the thrill of the wait. As it’s often a few degrees colder on a boat or frozen lake, you will be given an extra outer layer of waterproof clothing. Please remember to dress warmly underneath. Fishing gear is included.

Boat Trips

A comfortable way to explore Tromsø and the region. Ever since the early 1900s Tromsø has been the starting point for a host of expeditions to the Arctic. Find your exploratory side by joining a gentle boat cruise or sailing a luxury catamaran to get close-up contact with the mountains, fjords and wildlife. Some of the tours include warm clothes, but as it’s often a few degrees colder out at sea it’s important to wear warmer undergarments. Northern Norway is known for its impressive nature. Less than an hour from Tromsø by boat, you will be able to access the wild coast of the island of Kvaløya, a paradise for many bird species like the white-tailed sea eagle and puffin.
