In addition to the delivery of valuable industry tools, solutions and publications that include our seminal economics reports, and the upcoming emergency preparedness handbook and economic regulatory manual, an organizational focus this year is for ACI to assume its role as a guardian of the interests of the travelling public. ACI will provide best practice guidance for airports on the facilitation of passengers during irregular operations and will advocate for sound policies at the ICAO Air Transport Conference in March. The A-CDM and the related project to help airports implement the Airport Community Recommended Information Services (ACRIS) are key elements of the initiative. We are also formulating our approach to protect airport commercial revenue from the impending assaults arising from discussions at the World Health Organisation regarding alcohol and tobacco, from airlines that lobby for single till in airport economic regulatory schemes and place restrictions on passengers effectively prohibiting them from shopping at the airport and from governmental entities that cause long processing queues reducing passenger satisfaction and propensity to buy. These are among the topics that will be covered at the 5th annual ACI Economics and Finance Conference in Singapore, 6-8 March and the ICAO Conference in Montreal 18-22 March. ACI remains fully committed to its members in every region of the globe by way of advocacy on the international stage, the delivery of valuable industry tools, solutions and

publications and by our support for events that help our members take their airport and professional development to new heights. We look forward to continued success.

Lou Turpen, Former ACI World Governing Board Member, Inducted into the Living Legends of Aviation On 18 January 2013 at the star-studded 10th Annual Living Legends of Aviation Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California, Lou Turpen, President of the San Francisco Aeronautical Society was inducted into the Living Legends of Aviation. Lou served as a member of the Airports Council International World Governing Board from 1999 through 2004.
Lou was presented the prestigious award and medallion by “The Official Ambassador of Aviation”, John Travolta, actor and wellknown pilot. Considered the most important recognition event in aviation, The Living Legends of Aviation Awards recognizes significant contributions and achievements during aviation’s second hundred years. As the first airport executive to be inducted into The Living Legends of Aviation, Lou joins the ranks of astronauts Dr. Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, Gene Cernan and Colonel Frank Borman; industry leaders that include:
Sir Richard Branson, Edsel B. Ford, Paul Allen, Bruce McCaw and Barron Hilton; and actors John Travolta, Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Morgan Freeman and Kurt Russell. Lou holds a Civil Engineering degree from the United States Air Force Academy, a Masters degree in Business Administration and currently holds several Professional Engineering registrations. As former CEO of San Francisco International Airport from 1981–1995 and CEO of Toronto International Airport from 1995–2004, Lou’s notable contributions to the aviation industry include: San Francisco International Airport (SFO) • Responsible for more than $7.3 billion in airport capital redevelopment including a complete rebuild of the terminal complex at SFO from 1979 to 1987. • The planning, design, financing and initial construction of the new two million square foot International Terminal at SFO completed in 2000. Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) • The completion in 2004 of a total redevelopment of YYZ to include two new runways as well as the replacement of 75% of airport terminal, cargo and maintenance facilities. • Negotiating the terms of a 60 year lease of the Airport from the Government of Canada to the GTAA which commenced on December 2, 1996. • Developing a strategic vision for the Airport Authority and directing the planning and design of a ten year $4.4 billion (CAD) Airport Redevelopment Program completed in 2004. • Completion of an $800 million in strategic acquisitions to support the redevelopment of YYZ. • In 2004 YYZ was recognized as the most technologically advanced in the world and the GTAA was named one of the “Top 100” technology companies in North America. • In 2006 the Airport was named the “Best Global Airport” by the Institute of Transport Management.

Young Aviation Professionals Programme Launched by ACI, ICAO and IATA On 9 January 2013 in Montreal, Canada, Airports Council International (ACI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) establishing the global Young Aviation Professionals Programme. The programme will attract well-qualified young aviation professionals who have an interest in international civil aviation policy development and will bring those professionals to Montreal to the three organizations. “ACI is proud to work alongside ICAO and IATA as we continue to develop professionalism in the industry,” said ACI World Director General Angela Gittens. “The global aviation business is becoming more complex and for the first time this will give the best and the brightest an opportunity to participate in its future development from three perspectives.”

They will contribute to work programs relating to aviation safety, security and environment focusing on the inter-relationships between regulatory activities and the airport and airline industries. The programme pairs well with the successful Airport Management Professional Accreditation Programme (AMPAP) which is a strategic initiative of ICAO and ACI launched in 2007. AMPAP is available to airport executives around the globe and graduates earn the prestigious designation of International Airport Professional (IAP). Over the last 5 years, there have been 1441 participants in the programme from 86 countries. The IAP designation has quickly become the hallmark of excellence among the global airport community and 641 airport executives have earned their IAP designation.

Passenger Traffic Posts Moderate Growth as Air Freight Moves into Positive Territory in November Global passenger traffic continued along the growth path for the month of November increasing by +3.2% from the previous year. A major contributor to the on-going growth was the international passenger market with gains of +6% whereas domestic traffic experienced only a +1.1% gain. With the perpetual concerns regarding the Eurozone, domestic traffic has been stifled with a contraction of -5.5% in Europe. Moreover, although growth prospects are relatively limited in North America since the region is already working at capacity, the fiscal cliff is not alleviating the standstill with respect to year over year growth. Conversely, international passenger markets in AsiaPacific showed robust growth at +11.5%. More specifically, the growth velocity stems from airports based in SouthEast Asia. Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Singapore (SIN) each reported double digit gains of +13.1% and +12.2% respectively for the month of November. Although Bangkok experienced growth of +20.6%, it should be noted that traffic was significantly curtailed in November 2011 due to the destructive floods affecting the region.

ACI World’s Economics Director Rafael Echevarne commented, “Though air freight markets posted an overall net gain for the month of November, the results are mixed across regions with overall flat growth in freight volume throughout 2012 as compared to the previous year. Irrespective of the general rise in business confidence, it is still too early to project sustained growth based on the present conditions and risks. While we also see domestic passenger markets in retreat due in part by the economic uncertainty pervading across Europe and North America, international travel remains relatively buoyant and unencumbered with gains of almost +6% for the year as a whole. This provides some reassurance in the resilience of the industry as a whole since international traffic contains more than 40% of global passenger market.”

New Employees Join ACI World Issa Castro, Manager, Global Training ACI World is happy to announce the appointment of Issa Castro as Manager for Global Training, where she will be replacing Melisa Monje while she is on her one year maternity leave. Issa will be responsible for the operational management and delivery of training solutions for ACI’s worldwide membership. Her tasks include design, scheduling, administration, and delivery of safety training offerings, with a focus on quality service and relationship management in collaboration with GT team members. Issa has amassed over 15 years of international experience in the aviation, travel and service industry. Early in her career, she joined Cathay Pacific Airways as a Flight Attendant based in Hong Kong. She also worked for USbased Princess Cruises as Youth Activities Coordinator, managing all on-board activities for young travelers. In 2006, she joined the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as a member of the IATA Training and Development Institute. By 2010, she was Assistant Manager, supporting the IATA Airline Training Fund, as well as, managing the day-to-day operations for the airline safety and security portfolios. Prior to joining ACI, she also served as Project Administrator, Education with Dassault Systemes Services, LLC. Issa obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, majoring in Industrial Psychology, from the Ateneo de Manila University. She has also received Certificates in Project Management Essentials, and Instructional Standards from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
John Kim, Manager, Safety and Technical ACI World is delighted to welcome John Kim as a secondee to our Montreal office from Incheon International Airport. He brings with him a list of valuable airport experience, which consists of airport master planning, aerodrome design & construction, aerodrome operation, and airport operation & readiness. John possesses a strong knowledge of ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARP) and has provided Korean translation for a number of ICAO documents, including the 3rd & 4th editions of Annex 14. He also participated in setting up airport operation manuals and procedures for Incheon International Airport at the beginning of the airport’s operation. John completed his Airport Certification Training Course from the Federal Aviation Administration Academy, as well as, an Aviation Safety Management System Training Course from the University of Southern California Viterbi School. He also participated to get an Aerodrome Certification of Incheon Airport as a Self Inspector and joined the SMS establishment of Incheon as a SMS advisor. John worked with the Ministry of Construction and Transportation of Korea to revise the Master Plan of Incheon Airport as an aerodrome expert. He also worked at Erbil International Airport in IRAQ for Operations Readiness as a consultant.
