Communications Team Dear Friends, The past year has tested us all in many ways as we have dealt with the challenges and losses brought on by the Covid pandemic. I am so proud of our school community, who have shown such compassion and innovation in the face of unprecedented times. As you read this issue of Tidings you will see the many examples of the creativity and commitment of our students, faculty and staff. Most important of all, you will see that we are continuing to provide the exemplary experience that is the hallmark of an AHA education. Our faculty and students have embraced a hybrid model of instruction this year. Be sure to read about the ways we have adapted our programs and our campus to provide a safe and healthy environment that allows for maximum student engagement. Check out our fall drama radio show, remote business competition and virtual 5K race. See how our Angels are living their faith through remote Awareness Day and Service Day programs. Graduation for the class of 2020 was postponed, but it did happen in person, on campus in July. Concerts, honor assemblies, and so many more student activities have occurred remotely this year. We even had a virtual cookie-decorating contest at Christmas! The year has given us sad times as well. Please remember the AHA alumnae and their families included on our In Memoriam pages. We pray for the members of our school community who have passed away or who have lost loved ones to the virus. The financial toll for many of our families has been significant and we are very grateful for the donors who supported our Angel Tuition Assistance Fund this year, which allowed us to help students remain at AHA. Your gifts have truly impacted the lives of these young women. We are so thankful and blessed by the support of all of our donors, acknowledged in our 2019-2020 Annual Report included in this issue. Along with many schools and campuses this year, in the wake of the George Floyd murder, our leadership has recognized we must reexamine our policies and programs. To that end, we have partnered with Olive Branch Educators Diversity Consultants to work with all members of our school community to provide training and guide us on our journey towards improving equity and inclusion at AHA, with the goal of creating an environment where all feel welcome. Our community has selected “Improving Cultural Proficiency” as the topic for our Middle States Colloquium. A new Director of Diversity and Inclusion will join our team in February. I hope you can see how we are not just adapting, but looking to the future with great hope and anticipation. I am delighted to share with you the exciting news of the addition of a middle school here at the Academy of the Holy Angels. Opening in September 2021, we will be offering a comprehensive curriculum for girls in grades 6, 7 and 8 to prepare them for high school. At a time when many schools have faced closing, we are positioned to offer a personal individualized program to students. Please visit our school website to learn more about AHA’s middle school program (and read about it in this issue!) Our theme for this school year is “Sharing our love, faith and hope,” from the words of our foundress, Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger. This is our wish for all of you in the New Year. Thank you for your support and loyalty to Holy Angels. Stay safe and healthy! I ask for your continued prayers, please be assured of mine. Blessings,

Melinda A. Hanlon, Ed.S. President

Summer Ceremony for 140th Graduating Class On July 28, 2020, Academy of the Holy Angels hosted an in-person outdoor graduation for the 124 members of the Class of 2020. The Academy’s 140th graduation exercises, held on the Demarest campus, were the realization of many months of cautious planning set in motion by the COVID-19 pandemic. Those in attendance were reminded to wear their masks and adhere to prescribed social distancing measures. AHA President Melinda Hanlon welcomed the graduates and their families, noting the strength and character of this class. She congratulated the Angels for having faith in themselves and one another. President Hanlon thanked the members of the AHA community for their support, including parents, administration, faculty, and staff. Sophia Luongo was Senior Commencement Speaker, the highest honor AHA can confer upon a graduate. Sophia, who graduated First in Merit, was a Sister Nonna Dunphy Scholarship finalist, and distinguished herself in her studies of Chemistry and Italian. She is a past-president of the Italian Honor Society and a member of the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society, and Math Honor Society. She earned The George Washington University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science medal, and attended the Georgetown University Forensic Science Institute. She participated in AHA’s study abroad program at Oxford. Luongo was co-president of the Forensic Science Club, as well as JOY, a club that organizes concerts at assisted living facilities, and lastly, Project Greenhouse, a group that grows and donates produce to a local food bank.

4

She was active with many clubs: PowerBack, Operation Smile, Lean In, The Society for Animals, Veganism, and Ethical Decisions, and the school newspaper. She is attending Boston College. “We had no idea that Friday, March 13, would be our last day together,” Sophia said, referring to the day New Jersey closed school campuses to curtail the pandemic. “I’m incredibly grateful for how we’ve stayed connected and optimistic despite the hardships we have faced in the past several months.” Luongo said she missed walking the halls of AHA, and having the chance to say goodbye. She looks forward to the future with confidence, adding, “The Class of 2020 is filled with extremely thoughtful, hardworking, humble, loving, and courageous women.” Katherine Gazzini graduated Second in Merit. Gazzini is a member of the National Spanish Honor Society, the National Math Honor Society, and the National Honor Society. She is a political columnist and an award-winning member of AHA’s Model United Nations organization. She is continuing her studies at Dartmouth. AHA English teacher Stephanie Gibney Dowling ’08 was the alumna speaker. Mrs. Dowling is a graduate of Loyola University. She holds a master’s degree and is pursuing further studies. In her address, Mrs. Dowling noted the graduates’ endurance, saying, “You are strong…and eager to take on what comes next.” She compared the moment to standing before a blank canvas, and reminded the Angels to focus on their values as they make decisions for themselves.

Annabel Hazrati was chosen by her peers to deliver the Senior Response. Annabel is a member of the National Honor Society, the Tri-M National Honor Society, and the National Social Studies Honor Society. She earned the Religious Studies Award for Community Service, and AHA’s awards for both journalism and her work with the AHA Handbell Choir. In 2018, an excerpt from her original poem, “Pink Is the Strongest Color,” was featured as part of the United Nations Day of the Girl celebration. Annabel has been active with the AHA Diversity Council and International Week programs. She is currently a student at The George Washington University.

“Surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you,” she advised. “Embrace constructive criticism.” She reminded the graduates to advocate, talk, pray, and volunteer. “Do something each day,” she counseled. “The world needs Angels.”

“As a grade, we may have missed out on days that we all looked forward to for a very long time, and there isn’t much that will compensate for that, but as a grade, we are not short on ordinary days. We are not short on moments that made us laugh, memories that we’ll keep with us forever, and most importantly, friends (who) became sisters, because after all, it’s hard to even have a conventionally ordinary day when you’re surrounded with such an extraordinary group of people,” Annabel said. As the Angels turned the tassels on their caps, they concluded a class milestone highlighted by 20,702 service hours and over $23.2 million in scholarships.

Legacy Families At commencement celebrations, Holy Angels gives special recognition to the graduates who have continued their family’s Holy Angels legacy. Congratulations to our 2020 legacy families: Christine Franco Bagin ’84; Christina Bagin ’20; Mary Frances Byrne Bednarcik ’83; Maura Bednarcik ’20; Teresa Santangelo Esoldi ’82; Diana Esoldi ’20; Erin O’Leary Flynn ’87; Grace Flynn ’20; Angela Branda Kunz ’84; Mary Kunz ’20; Liz Sawyer Morrissey ’83; Morgan Morrissey ’20; Geraldine O’Shea Wacker ’88; Ciara Wacker ’20; Suzanne Wilz ’86 and Shannon Klein ’20

Holy Angels Implements Hybrid Instructional Model After many months of collaboration with a special task force, the Academy of the Holy Angels’ administration established a plan to reopen the campus on September 9, 2020. The Academy’s new hybrid instructional model blends in-school and at-home learning to emphasize health and safety and, most importantly, maximize student engagement. “I believe Holy Angels is well positioned to begin the 202021 school year,” said AHA President Melinda A. Hanlon, expressing the importance of personal responsibility among every member of the AHA community. “We look forward to a successful partnership with students and their families.” How does the hybrid system work? Every other school day, 50 percent of the students attend in-person classes on campus and 50 percent receive synchronous learning from home via Google Meet or Zoom. Students are assigned to Team Theresa or Team Caroline, so they know which days to report to campus. Team Theresa is named for Blessed Mother

6

Theresa Gerhardinger, foundress of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Team Caroline is named for Mother Caroline Friess, director of the SSNDs in America. The schedule allows Team Caroline and Team Theresa to meet with all their teachers in person during the course of one week. While they are on campus, students establish working relationships with teachers, receive critical services, and socialize with peers. When Angels study from home, they enjoy a consistent schedule, remain engaged for the full school day, and benefit from reduced exposure to COVID-19. “The plan to return to in-person classes is aligned with New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s and the NJ Department of Education’s guidelines shared in midJuly,” AHA Principal Jean Miller explained. “The plan also follows the Centers for Disease Control guidelines for health and safety. Our task force, comprised of administrators, teachers, staff, parents, doctors, nurses,

t i d i n g s | fa l l 2 0 2 0

and maintenance personnel, worked throughout the summer to evaluate schedule possibilities and safety precautions that would best serve our community.” The Academy’s classrooms have been outfitted with plexiglass partitions and reconfigured to permit appropriate social distancing of at least six feet. In addition, air conditioning with MERV filtration was installed in the main school building. Tents were installed and have been used for outside learning, breaks, and lunch periods. AHA’s administration worked closely with Aladdin Food Services to implement Aladdin’s Safe Dining Plan, which includes a cashless payment system. Students and staff are able to go online and load funds onto their ID badges so they may make purchases. A boxed lunch service is available, and spaced seating is offered inside and outside the building. AHA’s 2020-21 theme, ‘Sharing our love, faith, and hope,’ also reflects the importance of taking responsibility for others’ well-being.

AHA’s Future Business Leaders and Emerging Entrepreneurs Earlier this year, business-minded Angels competed at the DECA State Championship in Atlantic City, where team members earned multiple awards. The top honor went to Catherine Shea, who became AHA’s first DECA member to qualify for the national event. Catherine, whose topic was Principles of Business Management & Administration, became a second place national qualifier out of hundreds of student competitors. The chapter was recognized by DECA for its quick growth. AHA DECA Adviser Krystal Hermanns reported that the AHA chapter expanded to four times its size, and qualified twice as many girls to the state competition. The team grew from 13 students in 2019 to 56 this past school year.

8

Emily Nam, Tamara Kim, Chaelin Park, and Brooke Hess were recognized as top placement for the Virtual Business Challenge in the State of New Jersey, with Emily and Tamara having the

highest score for the state in both the October and January rounds. Sophie Cossio was recognized for earning one of the highest test scores in the state, and Laura Carbo was honored for having one of the highest roleplay scores. Claire Dodds and Olivia Leonard received certificates in hospitality/food management for their test scores, and both Laura Carbo and Catherine Shea made the finals. “I am extremely proud of these girls for qualifying and competing at this level. These girls went from barely knowing what DECA involved, to competing at one of the highest levels. I am hoping that they are able to take this great experience with them into the future, and put it to good use in both interviews and in the world of business,” Ms. Hermanns added. AHA Principal Jean Miller noted, “Our DECA club supports the work our students are doing in the classroom. It provides students the opportunity to

determine if they have genuine interest in certain business careers while still in high school, thus making their college experiences more practical. Our graduates are forging a formidable presence in the business sector, and impressively, in leadership positions.”

AHA Fall Theater Brings Back the Live Radio Drama The award-winning Academy of the Holy Angels Theater Department presented three classic radio dramas: “Candy Matson, P.I. – The Cable Car Murder”, “The Shadow – The Face of Death”, and “The Adventures of Superman – The Silver Clipper”. Director Katie McSherry Collins ’04 turned to the vintage radio drama concept to allow her young thespians to practice their craft in a Covidsafe environment, and provide live

entertainment to the general public. “In the dark times of the Great Depression and the years that followed, a genre of theater emerged that gave comfort to those who needed something to brighten up their day: the radio drama. A radio drama depends on dialogue, music, and sound effects to help the listener imagine the characters and story. Actors are not seen, but rather they are heard. In these uncertain times in 2020, we will be using our

talents here at AHA to present a radio drama to bring joy to our community,” Mrs. Collins explained. Radio dramas were developed in the 1920s and remained popular in many areas of the world until the emergence of television in the 1950s.

AHA’s radio drama performers included students from Holy Angels and young men from other schools in the region.

Dancers Recruited by Collegiate Teams Recruiters who seek exceptional dancers for collegiate teams have their eye on the Academy of the Holy Angels, winner of four consecutive national titles. This past summer, Carmela Alessio, Kaitlyn Grifonetti, and Natasha Vafiadis showcased their talents by participating in the virtual 2020 College Dance Team Combine. “It is so humbling that the Holy Angels Dance Team has become a trusted source for recruiters, who feel confident that our program prepares dancers for collegiate teams,” said AHA Varsity Dance Coach Jenny Sweet, who led the Angels to their 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 titles in small varsity hip-hop. The team vied for a fifth title in 2020, missing first place by a 0.03-point margin. Although this year’s combine was booked at a venue in Tennessee, COVID-19 safety concerns convinced event’s organizers to try a virtual platform. The transition was a success.

The country’s top high school dancers learned hip-hop, jazz, and pom routines to highlight their abilities. Participating athletes were evaluated by staff from over 40 college dance teams, including representatives from The Ohio State University, University of Tennessee, University of Minnesota, Clemson University, Rutgers University, Louisiana State University, and the University of Alabama. During the 2018 College Dance Team Combine, Natalie Quinn was signed by The Ohio State University, and

Sahar Ali-Jenkins and Kaitlyn Lack were signed by Rutgers. All three dancers are members of the AHA Class of 2019. Sophia Costa (AHA ’20) was signed by The University of Mississippi Rebelettes following her appearance at the 2019 combine. “We are hoping that our successful signing streak will continue!” Coach Sweet added.

s p irit u a l it y & ser v i c e ‘Who Is My Neighbor?’ AHA Director of Mission and Ministry Joan Connelly organized Awareness Day 2020 as an exploration of Catholic social teaching. Alumnae, faculty, students, and guests presented a host of workshops that promoted greater understanding of complex immigration issues and the concept of global community. During the gathering assembly, Kayla Pringle ’20 noted that welcoming the stranger is a mandate from God that appears in several sacred texts. She added that people are forced to migrate to escape conflict, violence, persecution, and the effects of climate change. She led everyone in a prayer for courage to help others. Immigration specialist and AHA alumna Emily Bendaña ’02, J.D. presented a keynote address outlining facts and laws regarding immigration. Emily shared that she became involved in this specialty because she witnessed a friend who is a Coptic Christian being treated unfairly. She discussed what it takes for immigrants to achieve legal status in the United States of America, outlining the issues of visa overstays, the difficulties faced by those who enter the country without inspection, and the problems of those seeking asylum. She dispelled common myths about undocumented immigrants, and stressed the importance of voting to influence immigration laws. She urged those present to vote, get educated, and get involved. Some examples she suggested include working as a translator or a pro bono attorney. Emily expressed her gratitude to recently retired AHA Spanish teacher S. Carole Tabano, SSND ’59, for helping her learn a second language that allows her to connect with her clients.

10

During the workshop portion of the day, AHA Librarian Catherine Korvin traced her family’s moves through France and pre-Castro Cuba, prompted by the

Holocaust. Mrs. Korvin lost several relatives, including an uncle killed by infamous Nazi Klaus Barbie. She discussed how French collaborating officials and Nazi occupying forces kept detailed files on individuals, prohibited Jews from practicing professions and visiting public places, and expelled them from universities. The trauma her grandparents, parents, in-laws, aunts, and uncles experienced has been passed down through the generations, said Mrs. Korvin, who remains acutely aware of all forms of bullying. Kaitlyn Guintu ’20 and Katherine Gazzini ’20 hosted a workshop on climate refugees. Topics included the people of Kiribati, an island nation that is disappearing under rising oceans. Participants in this workshop also discussed people leaving Honduras due to drought linked to climate change. The presenters pointed out that it is virtually impossible for people to gain asylum in the U.S.A. for issues related to climate change. Sociologist and AHA alumna Kelly Glenn ’13 concluded the day with a discussion of her work with Catholic Charities. Glenn has spent time teaching English to unaccompanied minor migrants, and taught at a middle school in Kosovo. While working with the People on the Move on the Balkan Refugee Trail, Glenn was arrested eight times for delivering onions to migrants, who do without simple items like onions, socks, and undergarments. She collected testimony regarding violence to those migrating through the Balkans, reported incidents, and offered first aid. Glenn urged everyone to learn about other cultures and shrink the barriers that separate us.

Remote Service Day Outreach is a pillar of a Holy Angels education, so there was no doubt Service Day would continue this past spring, despite the COVID-19 outbreak. Service Day organizers Kathy Sylvester and Maryanne Miloscia from AHA Campus Ministry report that members of the Holy Angels community extended themselves to others in some safe and creative ways while social distancing regulations remain in effect. Service Day participants were also urged to follow the School Sisters’ lead by being advocates for social justice. On May 6, members of the Holy Angels community chose to: • Write letters to their representatives to express their views on today’s important issues • Grocery shop for elderly family members and visit outdoors at a safe distance • Craft reusable cloth face masks for family and friends • Collect books for young students in need • Make donations to support local food pantries • Contribute funds toward meals for medical workers • Help neighbors with their gardening and yardwork • Create a mini-herb garden as a gift • Host a video chat with a loved one who is undergoing chemotherapy Although the school community was not able to assemble and engage in environmental cleanups and other traditional volunteer projects, Service Day 2020 demonstrated the dedication of the individuals who comprise the Holy Angels family.

Sister Kathleen Dunham, SSND

Sister Diane Driscoll, SSJ

This September, the Academy of the Holy Angels recognized the retirements of Sister Kathleen Dunham, SSND, and Sister Diane Driscoll, SSJ. Both women have spent the past five decades as educators.

has been a privilege and joy to work with them. I am proud to say that Holy Angels is a sponsored school of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. It is an excellent school and a real pearl in our history of education.”

Sister Kathleen Dunham grew up in Newark and met the School Sisters of Notre Dame when she was a student at Saint Peter Elementary School. She graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in education at Notre Dame of Maryland. She later received a master’s degree in religious studies from Boston College. Sister Kathleen taught all subjects at the elementary school level, and taught math, science, and religion at the middle school level. During her eight years at AHA, she taught religious studies, prayer and SSND spirituality, and Old Testament.

Sister Diane Driscoll grew up in New York City and in the State of Florida. She attended Catholic schools before entering Chestnut Hill College, where she earned an AB in French and English. She later earned a master’s in French from Middlebury College and a master’s in Christian education from Princeton Theological Seminary. Although she has taught French, Driscoll gravitated toward her primary interest: religious studies. Sister Diane spent the past six years teaching the sacraments and Christian morality at AHA.

Sister Kathleen shared, “I have loved being at Holy Angels; it has been one of the highlights of my teaching years. The girls at Holy Angels are wonderful! The faculty and staff are some of the nicest, most helpful, and supportive coworkers that I have experienced. It

Katie McSherry Collins ’04 and her husband Billy welcomed a baby girl, Keira Rose Collins, born on May 1, 2020.

Mrs. Briana Portuesi and her husband Carlo welcomed daughter Olivia on May 11th at 8:43 pm. She weighed 8 lbs 10 oz. and was 22 in long. Her big sister Sofia was the happiest girl in the world when she finally got to meet her baby sister!

“I am extremely impressed and inspired by AHA,” Sister Diane said. “I would not expect any other school to be like it. It’s just an amazing school with an extraordinary community and a dedicated faculty.” Commenting on her time at Holy Angels, Sister Diane shared, “It was all a gift.”

Dean of Students Andréa Beyer and her husband Phil welcomed their second daughter, Margaret Joan, on August 22, 2020. She weighed 8 lbs 10 oz. and was 21 inches long.

Mrs. Rita Goff and her husband Matthew welcomed daughter Emilia Rose on April 21, 2020. She weighed 7lbs, 9oz and was 19.5 in long.

The Unknown: Embarking on Remote Learning in Spring 2020 Having a growth mindset enabled the Academy’s community of active problemsolvers to smoothly transition from classrooms to distance learning. It was clear that while the world self-quarantined to halt COVID-19, AHA’s teachers, students, and technology team would rise above and continue the Academy’s 141-year mission to educate young women.

students recording themselves playing along with the professional recording so they can continue playing with an ensemble. They send me the recording and I assess their performance.”

AHA shifted to a structured, online school day complete with professional instruction in real time, and “office hours” for students seeking additional guidance. Faculty members rose to the occasion, mastering new technology and devising creative ways to keep students engaged.

Physics teacher Nadine Behrens shared, “Luckily, the online textbook we have been using for the class all year has virtual labs. These labs have online simulations for the students. We had an opportunity to use one in school last month, so the students are familiar with the process.”

“We learned that a school is a building, but we are a community; one that is vibrant, thoughtful, and resourceful, especially in the face of adversity. Our teachers are amazing professionals. Their commitment, passion, and love are apparent in their lessons and in the multitude of ways they connect with our students,” shared AHA Principal Jean Miller.

Julia Fernandez ’21 copied and pasted the links for her classes in a readily accessible location, so she is ready to go every day. She stays focused on her work, but enjoys being able to sleep a little longer, wear casual clothes, and even have a small snack during class. This Angel views online learning as an effective way to adapt to the current situation.

The Office of Academic and College Counseling assisted students with course selection, coordinated virtual college visits for juniors and hosted a celebratory virtual Decision Day so the Class of 2020 could share their college choices with one another.

“I do miss seeing all of my friends and teachers in person. It can feel a little bit lonely when you are sitting by yourself without seeing everyone, so my friends and I have been FaceTiming during lunch,” Julia said, adding that FaceTime also makes group study sessions possible.

Instrumental Music Director Mariann Annecchino reported, “I’m having a wonderful time with my online music lessons. I have the orchestra and jazz

Alexa Watson ’22 added, “I love that I am able to just relax in my living room or my kitchen to successfully complete my

“At 2:05 p.m., I am immediately free to complete my work or to do another activity,” she said. She also uses FaceTime to connect with her friends. “I’m finding myself talking to classmates after 2:05 more than I did during regular school days,” Alexa noted.

AHA Parents say...

keeping my daughter and her fellow students engaged and I’m proud to say that she is a student at Holy Angels.”

Debbie W: “I wanted to reach out to let you know how much I appreciate all that you and your faculty are doing for the students of Holy Angels.

Joseph C: “As I talk with my neighbors (while socially distancing), it is clear that the work AHA put in place in advance of having to be virtual was significant. Other children in local schools are not getting guided instruction throughout the school day and many of the parents are essentially homeschooling their children. While many acknowledge it is allowing them to understand their children’s needs, they fear that since they are not teachers their children will suffer down the road. Because of the efforts the AHA teachers are putting in, the students are still getting skilled instruction.”

“I can’t say enough about the positive and proactive way that you have led the Holy Angels community during this unprecedented crisis. I’ve watched the seamless continuation of instruction from the very first day of the quarantine. By making the decision to follow the regular school schedule, you asked far more of both your students and faculty than any other school, public or private, that I know of. In doing so, I’ve witnessed both the students and faculty rise to the challenge and thrive in these difficult times.

work and video calls.” Without her daily commute, she can enjoy some extra sleep in the morning, which she said enhances her productivity.

“As the weeks go on…the students of Holy Angels are watching their peers develop pervasive apathy toward school. But a direct result of the expectations you and the faculty placed upon your students is that there’s no room for them to formulate excuses and become apathetic about their education. I’ve always strongly believed in leading by example and am so happy to see every one of my daughter’s teachers doing exactly that every day. From my perspective, your students are learning far-reaching lessons about the importance of balancing patience and understanding with accountability. I am so appreciative of all the work involved with

Kerry Ann F: “I can’t tell you how grateful I have been to AHA, once again, for keeping my daughter grounded…(She) has been so busy with her classes and routine. It is a pleasure to see her up at 8am logging in rather than sleeping the day away and staring into the abyss of her phone. When I walk by her in the office and I hear the chatter of her English teacher, it steadies me. This has given (her) such purpose. Not only do the continued classes and schedule keep her brain turned on but, as a mother, you know that feeling of walking by your child’s room at night and seeing her homework all over the bed or desk and feeling that sense of normalcy. “I know in this time of missing so much we will be rewarded with a sense of gaining perspective. We are AHA strong.”

Dear Friends of Holy Angels, On behalf of the Academy of the Holy Angels, I am pleased to present our 2019-2020 Annual Report. This year more than ever, we are grateful for your generosity and loyalty. Learning and working virtually has presented challenges we could not have imagined a year ago, and your support allows us to continue the mission of the School Sisters of Notre Dame to transform our world through the education of our young women. In this our 141st year, we remain a strong community relying on our shared faith and on one another. Each day, I marvel at the fortitude and creativity of our students, faculty and staff as together we continue to navigate through this pandemic to ensure that every Angel receives an exceptional high school experience.

Our theme this year, “Sharing our faith, love and hope,” comes from the words of our foundress, Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger. We rely on these foundational words and the spirit of the School Sisters each day. Thank you for sharing your faith and love for AHA with us and in turn, be assured of our prayers of thanksgiving. Your fidelity to Holy Angels is the cornerstone to all we offer our students. As we look ahead to a new year, I wish you hope, good health and happiness. Blessings,

Melinda A. Hanlon, Ed.S. President

Tuition Donors 19-20 The vision of the School Sisters of Notre Dame teaches us that education means enabling persons to reach the fullness of their potential. The following benefactors through their extraordinary gifts of scholarship allow us to transform the lives of our students.

Anonymous (2) Mrs. Theresa Spola o ffice o f ad v ancement Dorrie Voulgaris Director of Advancement Barbara Bennett Burklund ’77 Assistant Director of Advancement – Events The lists on the following pages contain the names of all who made contributions to the Academy of the Holy Angels Annual Fund either in the form of direct gifts or in donated services between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020. S tudent P rofile A H A S eni o r P ublishes Her F irst B o o k Kaya Simmons has published “Lost Words,” a collection of her original poems, some of which she wrote before entering her senior year at the Academy of the Holy Angels. She decided to assemble her poems into a book, and had the paperback volume self-published through Amazon. Her raw, emotional works explore unrequited love, unspoken words, and perfect endings. Asked about the title she chose, Kaya referred to the dedication page, which reads, “To all those with whom I have no words left to say.” She added, “Those are the lost words.” Kaya acknowledged that people sometimes leave us when words still need to be said.

14

At Holy Angels, Kaya explores her interests in writing, track, and soccer in her post as sports editor for the school newspaper, AHA Voice. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society, the

Spanish National Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta (Math) Honor Society. Kaya has been active with the Student Council since her freshman year, and is now vice president of the Class of 2021. She is also executive secretary for the AHA Black and Hispanic Cultural Society. Kaya’s love for learning has taken her to some of the world’s best colleges and universities. This Angel has taken a crime scene investigation course at Brown University and a photography class at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She also attended AHA’s study abroad program at Oxford University, where she took a bespoke course in critical thinking and oral presentation. In her hometown of West Orange, this active young woman participates in a community-wide environmental initiative. Kaya explained that she visits local schools and parks and picks up trash and litter. She then transforms her work into art. “I take pictures of each individual piece of trash and edit them together into a symbolic picture,” Simmons said, indicating a photo she created using images of her town hall and a light bulb. “The light bulb represents my town because Thomas Edison’s museum factory is our main attraction so we, West Orange, use that as a symbol. Therefore, I placed that in front of town hall in the photo to show the power the litter has over every member of our community.”

Prep for Success at AHA Middle School music, and physical education with different teachers. A rich fine and performing arts program will be offered. All are welcome! While Holy Angels is steeped in Catholic tradition, the Academy serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. AHA’s foundresses were committed to meeting the educational needs of immigrant children, and the school now known as AHA was founded in 1879 to provide education to young women. In 1890, the Academy was incorporated as “Institute of Holy Angels: Collegiate Institute for Young Ladies and Preparatory School for Little Girls.” The preparatory school was still in operation when AHA moved from Fort Lee to Demarest in 1965, although the lower school was being phased out so the school’s leaders could focus on expanding the upper school.

Starting in September 2021, young women in Grades 6, 7, and 8 will prep for success at the Academy of the Holy Angels Middle School. The middle school, which renews AHA’s tradition of educating young girls, will be located on the first floor of Kelleher Hall. AHA Middle School inspires young women to cultivate a life-long love of learning and empowers them to navigate the challenges of adolescence, find their voice, and share their unique gifts with others. “We recognize the need exists to provide middle school students with a comprehensive program to prepare them for high school,” AHA President Melinda Hanlon noted. “We are poised to provide the strong foundation needed for success in high school and help students close any gaps in learning. All-girl education provides girls with every opportunity and AHA Middle School will be a place where girls take the lead.” AHA Middle School Dean Traci Koval and her faculty members will offer middle school students a customized educational experience that includes a firm foundation in core subjects, and opportunities to explore individual interests. Each grade will have a homeroom teacher. Students will take core subjects and “specials,” such as art,

AHA’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a firstrate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others. • AHA Middle School’s all-girl setting will allow young women in Grades 6, 7, and 8 to take on all leadership roles so they may become self-reliant, resilient individuals. • Students will enjoy a customized education that features personalized attention. • Young women will define themselves, growing as individuals as they pursue familiar interests and explore new educational pathways. • Each student will receive a solid educational foundation and moral compass in the SSND tradition. AHA Middle School will be funded by tuition and fees, and financial aid will be available. An Open House will be held on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. Please visit our website for up-to-date information on this event.

M ission To inspire young women to cultivate a life-long love of learning while empowering them to navigate the challenges of adolescence, find their voice, and share their unique gifts with others. 18

Dean Traci Koval will take the helm of the Academy of the Holy Angels Middle School this September. She came to AHA to serve as interim dean of students, filling in for Dean Andréa Beyer from June through December 2020. She earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Thomas Edison State College. Dean Koval then continued her education at Seton Hall University, where she received a master’s degree in education leadership, management, and policy through the Catholic School Leadership Program. She has completed the coursework and needs only to finish her dissertation to earn a doctorate in school administration from SHU.

Meet the Middle School Dean

Dean Koval is an experienced Catholic and charter school educator and a certified principal and teacher. She spent most of her career teaching in Catholic schools, and has taught nearly every subject to students from pre-K through Grade 12. Before coming to AHA, she served as a director of admissions, campus minister, principal, assistant principal, and dean of students, and guest taught at the college level. “Being an educator affords me numerous opportunities to meet young people at different stages of their lives; be instrumental in helping them see their inherent goodness, gifts, and talents; and encourage them to reach for new heights as they learn to cope with life’s daily struggles and rewards. I have been, and continue to be, richly blessed with many wonderful educators/mentors throughout my life’s journey and I relish the opportunity to pay it forward as often as possible,” shared Dean Koval. In a recent interview, Dean Koval, provided a preview of the benefits AHA Middle School will offer young women.

How will AHA Middle School inspire new generations of young women? AHA Middle School’s leaders and faculty members care about students and their growth. The school will provide girls with the foundation and groundwork to succeed in high school. Our program will provide a safe and nurturing environment where students will build on their elementary experiences and grow academically, spiritually, morally, and socially.

Why are all-girls schools so important? All-girls schools are an excellent choice because each and every opportunity to lead, manage, coach, encourage, shine, create, and excel is available to a young woman. Opportunities will be available in class, on the field, in

the theater, and in clubs and activities. Learning how to engage in healthy competition with peers is vital to a young woman’s growth into a confident, compassionate, competent individual. Getting a head start on this development in the middle school environment is a priceless opportunity to prepare for success in high school and beyond.

How will AHA Middle School fulfill the SSND mission to help each young woman reach the fullness of her potential? The School Sisters of Notre Dame’s mission to prepare citizens of the world will start at AHA Middle School with an introduction to the values of respect, communion in ministry, joy, transformation, engagement, and excellence. These values will shine through the sense of mission and service. We pride ourselves in educating the young women entrusted to our care, and pay close attention to each student’s intellectual, social, physical, and spiritual development.

Further information and details on how to apply for the 2021-22 school year can be found at

S tudent P rofile AHA s ophm o re accepted to new yor k yo uth s y mph o ny Violinist Faith Youn ’23 experienced a split second of disbelief when she learned she had been accepted to the New York Youth Symphony, but no one who has heard her expressive music would have doubted her success.

Mrs. Annecchino also invited Faith to join AHA’s Select Strings ensemble and chose her to perform at the School Sisters of Notre Dame’s 2019 Donor Recognition Luncheon. Faith is also a member of AHA’s chapter of the Tri-M Honor Society, a national organization that recognizes talented musicians who demonstrate scholarship, character, leadership, and service.

“For the many years that I have played violin, New York Youth Symphony seemed like an achievement out of my reach,” Faith said, explaining that she competed against some of the tristate area’s best high school and college musicians.

Faith is an active member of the AHA community, where she is involved in varsity golf, the Asian Cultural Society, Angels Anatomy, and Art Club. She is also an Angel Ambassador, and has earned three President’s Volunteer Service Awards.

NYYS, which is now beginning its 58th season, was organized as a showcase orchestra. Musicians who are accepted to this program are encouraged to display a professional attitude as they learn from distinguished educators and play in some of the world’s most famous concert halls.

Outside of AHA, Faith studies violin at Mannes Prep, where she is concertmaster. She has already participated in three performances with the New Jersey Regional Orchestra, and is a member of the VioLIT Quartet.

During her freshman year at Holy Angels, AHA Instrumental Music Director Mariann Annecchino named Fatih assistant concertmaster of the AHA Orchestra.

In her free time, Faith volunteers with Love Violin, an organization that provides music instruction to underprivileged children.

a l u m n a e a sso c i a tio n p reside n t My Dear Angel Sisters, It is our hope that this issue of Tidings finds you all well and safe during these uncertain times. This past year has been filled with countless emotions, many of which have forced us to make connections with loved ones in different ways. Our Angel community has certainly navigated these circumstances in stride. After our Alumnae Weekend was canceled this past October, alumnae in our Facebook group and the individual class Facebook groups remained united to our beloved alma mater. Through this connection, supported by our alumnae relations team, we continue to celebrate together, pray together, and even cry together during this tumultuous year of being physically apart. The AHA theme for this academic year is “Sharing our love, faith, and hope”. In true AHA fashion, despite the challenges of the global pandemic, there was a seamless transition to online learning last March, live streaming of the Class of 2020’s graduation for all of us to enjoy, and the pivot to a hybrid learning model this fall. The faculty and staff of the Academy should be commended for their flexibility and resilience. They are living this theme daily by

continuing to give our Angels hope and an amazing AHA experience, whether in person or remotely. The annual report highlights how you continue to share your gifts with AHA, especially those of you who responded so generously to the Tuition Assistance Fund. Thank you for your continued support. Your love, faith, and hope enable Holy Angels to continue its mission to provide young women with the wings they need to soar. If you’re not currently connected to AHA via social media, we would love to see you online! Please reach out to alumnae@holyangels.org. We look forward to seeing you soon. Warmest Regards, Robyn Assile Ziemba ’96

Mary Ann French ’68 retired from her role as director of student employment at Boston University after 45 years of service. She began her BU career in 1975, first working for the director of the advisory resource center and then in residence life. In 1979, Mary Ann found her home in student employment (SEO). Rising through the ranks of SEO, she began a system of automating the job location, hiring, and payroll functions for students. In the late 1980s, Mary Ann created a homegrown student personnel/payroll system that was cutting-edge for the time. She became a resource for other colleges in how to provide human resources services for students as a distinct class of university employees. In 2004, she was promoted to director and has continued to innovate and expand the program. One of Mary Ann’s proudest accomplishments is her involvement in both launching and stewarding the Boston University Initiative for Literacy Development (BUILD) program. Virtual 5K Unites School Community Hosting community events is a challenge these days, so a virtual 5K was the perfect way to bring everyone together. AHA Physical Education and Health Department Chair Tara Nordsvan developed the fitness and unity initiative that became Angels on the Move. “I had to think of a way I could keep the students socially distant and active, but not lose the connection of the class and the sense that we are in this together,” Mrs. Nordsvan explained. “So, while I was out for a run with a friend, I came up with the idea of doing this together in all our classes.” She recruited her colleagues Sue Liddy and Erin McGee, and the three researched easy 5K running plans. They mapped out the program based on a beginner’s 5K training program, and the students began preparing for the big day when school started in September. “Our aim was to have all our students working toward a common goal as a community,” Nordsvan explained. “We wanted to have students set goals for themselves, helping and supporting each other in class virtually and in school through our run/walk plan. It was also an opportunity for the students to be social while at a distance in our classes.

“After the 5K, I feel much more accomplished,” Senior Camille Rivas said. “I know I can now set and complete more fitness goals. It gave me a lot of confidence!” Senior Julia Oakley added, “I honestly never believed I would be able to run a 5K because I do not like running or exercise in general. To my surprise, I completed the 5K and enjoyed it, too! This was a great experience that showed me how much hard work and practice really do help.” “The 5K was a lot of fun, and an amazing thing to do during this pandemic,” said AHA senior Samantha De Martino, who ran with her mom, Stephanie De Martino. “It was a good bonding experience with my mom (and) got us moving and out of the house!”

“Along with the physical components, students were asked social and emotional questions at the beginning of the class to reflect on their enthusiasm, encouragement, fears, motivation, and growth mindset.”

Each class voted on their favorite motivational songs, and Nordsvan assembled and posted an official 5K playlist based on the students’ choices. Selections included tunes from various decades, including “Dynamite,” “Electric Love,” “Walk This Way,” “My Girl,” and “One Thing.”

Students were asked to find a safe route around their neighborhood and include people with whom they would like to

“They all finished as a community. They truly have been working so hard,” Nordsvan concluded.

accomplish their goal, whether they planned to run, walk, or run/walk. Some ran in local parks, some ran at the shore, some ran on treadmills, and others chose to walk their routes, including a student who was recovering from an injury. Each Angel tracked her personal progress, whether she ran alone or with a friend or family member.

Rachel Mina and her group, Knitting for Life, previously donated handmade baby hats and booties to a Bergen County hospital. Because of restrictions, the baby knitting projects were put on hold. Instead the group decided to bring cheer

to others by delivering handmade hearts and handwritten letters of gratitude to dedicated health care workers. Patsy Coleman arranged to send a video of herself singing “Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ral” to the seniors at an assisted living facility in Nyack, NY. Patsy’s first video was so well received that she has continued to share her music. Pat Brady, Tappan Zee Manor Activities Director shared, “What has also been very impressive about Patsy, beyond her gift for singing, is her thoughtfulness in her song selection. She clearly appreciates the power of her art and its ability to lift spirits.”

Brigid Miller and classmates Emma DeMarco and Molly Brooks organized an effort to deliver a lunch for the staff at two assisted living facilities in Rockland County. The students raised over $1,000 and made four food deliveries. “During the quarantine, we were hearing about the many COVID-19 cases in nursing homes. At the same time, we knew that several local restaurants were now struggling due to the quarantine. We wanted to do something to recognize and show appreciation for essential workers at nursing homes and support local businesses,” Brigid explained.

A dynamic lens that leads to transformation and advocacy AHA began the 2020-2021 academic year with an updated antidiscrimination policy in the student and faculty/staff handbooks. The policy affirms the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion as integral elements of the AHA community and education.

Fair and Nadine Behrens shared in their report to faculty, “We must challenge students and community members to be independent critical thinkers on social issues that affect our lives and that perpetuate racism and all biases in our society.”

“We believe that each person is created in the image of God, and we commit ourselves to foster an awareness that impels us to act in the interests of equity and justice for all,” the policy states.

This in-depth look at cultural proficiency will include stakeholder surveys, a self-assessment, a review of research questions, and action plans. These initiatives will be implemented, and a colloquium will be held during the 2024-25 school year.

The Holy Angels community also works to improve cultural proficiency, and has launched a related Middle Statesapproved self-study. The ability to respect and honor the cultural, economic, religious, racial, and gender identification of others aligns with the Academy’s mission to educate young women who recognize the dignity of all persons and promote justice and peace. “The administration has taken training in equity and inclusion, and our entire staff will be training in small groups throughout the year. This is a priority for the school,” shared AHA President Melinda Hanlon. In December, Mrs. Hanlon announced that the Academy’s first diversity director will be joining the Holy Angels family in February 2021. Holy Angels has opted to focus its Middle State’s self-study on cultural proficiency. AHA Coordinators Gail

In 2018, the AHA community explored implicit bias with Dr. Brandy Garlic. In 2019, the IDEAL (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, and Leadership) Council was established. This group of faculty, staff, and administrators has been examining implicit bias, white privilege, and racism with Dr. Diana Artis from Olive Branch Educators. As this year’s election approached, the council moderated conversations in the community to ensure that everyone was heard and included. The school community discussed the impact of the 2016 presidential election, explored the value of unity, and found ways to maintain harmony amidst disagreements.

feedback from alumnae from classes that ranged from the 1960s to the Class of 2020. A virtual meeting was held on December 7 to update alumnae on the progress. Jennifer Cucchisi, a social studies teacher and IDEAL Council member, informed alumnae about the AHA Diversity Council. This student organization focuses on inclusivity, respect, and understanding. Ms. Cucchisi also discussed BRIDGES, an AHA program that promotes inclusion and provides students with a safe space where they can be themselves.

AHA Religious Studies Department Chair Carol Fay covered the faculty training, which permits in-depth diversity, equity, and inclusion learning through small groups. Gail Fair presented a closer look at AHA’s new Middle States study, and Advancement Director Dorrie Voulgaris welcomed alumnae to take part in the process. A virtual workshop, “Authentic Allyship: How You Can Be a Part of the Solution” was held for alumnae on January 26, 2021.

This prayer was written 35 years ago in honor of the Beatification of Blessed Theresa of Jesus, foundress of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

May our living God and Creator care for you and keep you steadfast and faithful. May Jesus be the way you walk, the truth you follow, the life you lead. May the Holy Spirit empower you and keep you in grace. May Mary, the Mother of Jesus, take you into her loving heart and stand by you in life and in death. And may your guardian angels accompany you in all your ways. Amen. Blessed Theresa of Jesus, Pray For Us…

Vivian Bergonzi Beloved AHA teacher Vivian Bergonzi passed away on August 6, 2020. She began teaching at AHA in 1973. During her tenure of 19 years, she taught Spanish and served as the chair of the world language department. Vivian was also the proud mom of four Angels. We learned from her family that she always cherished the years she taught and loved reminiscing about her Holy Angels days. Vivian’s students remember her as one of their favorite teachers, a role model who “was full of life, very kind, and loved what she did.” Vivian’s lessons were long lasting. One alumna shared, “When I visited the beautiful places in Spain she taught me about, all I could do was think of her throughout my entire trip.”
