PRAYER FOR ANGELIC EVENING

God, our Father and Mother, we gather as one family this evening to celebrate and support AHA’s long-standing commitment to gospel values and academic excellence. Christ, our Teacher, may education at the Academy empower each young woman to reach the fullness of her potential. Holy Spirit, You lavish us with grace. May we lavish with praise and thanksgiving all who have worked hard and long over the past seventeen years to make this evening a success. Give to them as freely as they have given to us. Trinity of oneness and community, may we grow into that oneness that is Christ’s deep desire for us, while becoming a community of one mind and one heart. We ask all this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Dear Parents, Alumnae, Board Members and Friends, The first parents I met upon my arrival at Holy Angels last July were the past and current chairs of Angelic Evening. I suspected immediately that Angelic Evening was a major enterprise here and as the months have passed, experience has proved this to be true. Angelic Evening is the culmination of countless hours of work by many dedicated volunteers who have labored tirelessly to create an event that is both fun and enjoyable and also financially successful. In short, it is a symbol of the community of Holy Angels working together for the common good. The common good at Holy Angels is always to provide an education that is transformative for our Angels. The proceeds from tonight’s Angelic Evening will be used primarily to enhance the security systems at Holy Angels so that the girls may be educated in an environment where their safety need not be their preoccupation. An added focus this year will be on raising funds for our scholarships and financial aid programs. During the Live Auction portion of the evening you will be given an opportunity to donate directly to these funds and your generosity will help us to attract, enroll and retain the best qualified students. Your presence at the Rockleigh Country Club this evening is a testament of your commitment to Holy Angels. Regardless of the level at which you can support Holy Angels tonight, may you enjoy yourselves as you peruse the many attractive gifts and trips, drop your tickets into the tricky tray baskets and purchase raffle tickets, all while mastering the art of text bidding. Of course, your experience will be enhanced by delicious food and the opportunity to meet and mix with guests at this event. Let me assure you that this Friday evening in Lent, the Most Reverend John W. Flesey, Regional Bishop of Bergen County, has graciously dispensed Catholic guests from having to abstain from meat at the Angelic Evening Gala. While my time at the Academy of the Holy Angels is short in duration, it is long in gratitude. Because of you, I am confident that the School Sisters of Notre Dame tradition, in which Holy Angels is grounded, will continue to flourish here. Gratefully,

Sister Patricia Murphy, SSND President

Dear Parents, Faculty and Guests, It is my honor to welcome you to the Academy of the Holy Angels 17th annual Angelic Evening Gala. I am so glad that you are here tonight and I thank you for coming to support this important event. For the past 16 years Angelic Evening has successfully raised funds through the generosity and kindness of people like you. All profits from Angelic Evening are invested directly into the school for the benefit of our students and the AHA community as a whole. The caring and generosity of AHA parents through all these years has provided for essential changes that have resulted in wonderful enhancements for our school and most especially for our girls. When I was approached about being the chairperson for Angelic Evening, I was very excited to accept the challenge but admittedly also very afraid. Angelic Evening is an enormous undertaking and I felt concerned that I would not be able to be as successful as in years past. Some days were definitely more challenging than others but it goes without saying that I could not have succeeded without the help of the volunteers who so generously committed their time and talents over the course of months and months to help ensure this evening’s success. The unwavering commitment of these extraordinary men and women to this event and to AHA meant so much to me personally and was pivotal to bringing tonight together for all of us. I’d like to thank our President, Sr. Patricia Murphy, for her guidance, support and special prayers for Angelic Evening throughout the year. I’d like to also thank Tara Brunt for her guidance from day one. The long planning meetings and strategy discussions were so important to the success of incorporating the significant changes that were made to the event this year. All the support and encouragement she gave me when I presented new ideas was wonderful. Thanks to Dorrie Voulgaris and Trish Murphy for the countless e-mail blasts, weekly connections and monthly letters. Thank you to George Ballane and the faculty volunteers who ensure that the technology needed for Angelic Evening runs smoothly and efficiently. And finally, a very special thank you to Barbara Burklund who is my partner, my friend and a true Angel. The countless hours she commits every year to Angelic Evening are simply amazing and this event could never be as successful or run as smoothly without her. The biggest and most important thank you I have to make is to all of you. Your attendance here and your generous donations, ads, sponsorships and participation in our raffles tonight are the reason this event continues to be a success each year. I am truly grateful for your support of this event and your generosity to the AHA community. My role as Chairperson has been made that much easier this year because of the support of the Administration, generosity and cooperation of the many parent volunteers, student volunteers, Angel Ambassadors and above all the love and support of my family. Thank you all for coming and best wishes for an enjoyable Evening! Mary Ayoub ‘84 Angelic Evening Chair

Welcome and thank you for supporting Holy Angels by attending Angelic Evening 2014! As an alumna, I have always known that a Holy Angels education is truly a blessing. However, it was not until my oldest daughter became a member of the class of 2015 that I realized just how wonderful and important it can be. So much has changed since I was a student; the Home Economics lab has been replaced by The Spola Science Center, with its beakers and test tubes, not pots and pans. The cafeteria was renovated to become the “Student Commons” and the library has been transformed technologically and aesthetically into a state of the art “Learning Commons.” All of this would not be possible without the charism of the School Sisters of Notre Dame who have sponsored AHA since its founding in 1879, by Sister Mary Nonna Dunphy. The idea that she can change the world is instilled in every girl who passes through the doors of Holy Angels. Indeed, future researchers, writers, and perhaps even the first woman President of the United States walks the halls. However, the transformation of persons is not limited to Nobel Prizes, Pulitzer Prizes, or political victories at Holy Angels. The Catholic education that is bestowed upon the girls teaches dignity and respect for human life while nurturing both the mind and spirit. One is just as likely to see an Angel raising money for Operation Smile or St. Jude’s Hospital as studying for her AP Biology test or writing her term paper. Our Angels are and always have been empowered to expand their horizons each and every day, becoming the strong, confident, and intelligent women we all know they can be. The proceeds from this evening will benefit our current Angels and the Angels of the future. Mary Ayoub, Angelic Evening’s inexhaustible chairlady, and the members of her committees have given of themselves tirelessly to make this evening a tremendous success. In closing, I would also like to express my gratitude and heartfelt admiration to Sister Patricia Murphy, SSND for all she has done for AHA as president this past year. Her faith, devotion, warmth and Irish wit has touched our lives forever and she will be truly missed. May God continue to bless the community of the Academy of the Holy Angels. Geralyn Parent Haws ’82 Parents’ Guild President

She shoots, she scores! Playing as both a wing and a forward on AHA’s Varsity soccer team, senior Elle certainly knows how to score goals. But the hard work and dedication that she brings to each game also translate into her studies, as she scores top grades in all four of her AP courses. Elle is also a member of the Student Institute for the Gifted, as well as the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, and she has participated in both of their summer programs at Vassar College and Hawaii Pacific University. One of Elle’s most important goals is to begin a career in biochemical engineering. She is currently taking Organic Chemistry at AHA, kick starting her plan to major in Biochemistry or Biology in college next year. Visit Holy Angels and keep your dreams in play!
