Editorial Dear Reader We have reached the end of 2023, the second of this magnificent adventure called ABSOLUTE ESCAPE. In the next edition #33, the project will be exactly 2 years old, and we will have a very special edition. Next year the project will grow even more, ABSOLUTE GUIDE will occupy a prominent place, with the participating brands growing with each passing day. The dream called ABSOLUTE ESCAPE continues to live with this 32st edition, and grows every day with our portals and guides. In 2024, SAVORY MAG will occupy a prominent place in our universe, with more editions and articles on the portal.
I end by thanking you for continuing to read my magazines and visit the ABSOLUTE ESCAPE portals, they are the driving force behind this dream project, carried out in a passionate way. An extraordinary year 2024 for everyone, in the company of ABSOLUTE ESCAPE. Until the next edition.

Wabi Sabi is the second project by João Costa and Polina Kartanova. About three years ago, the couple inaugurated the Salvaterra Country House & Spa, in the district of Santarém, and it was the first cover of ABSOLUTE ESCAPE EDITION #01, it is a rural tourism unit with a unique environment in the country. We are in the heart of Alentejo, with the house and the pool surrounded by an oasis-like garden.

Casas da Vargem are located in a valley in Ponta do Sol, Madeira, characterized by a mix of small banana plantations and single-family houses. A narrow road on the upper side of the terrain gives access to the inclined terrain 3 meters below, wich had 2 small stone storages in ruins. The scale of those storages, typical for the traditional construction in this area, were the basis for this project with 2 semidetached holiday houses. The storages were renovated and various new volumes with a similar size were organized sloping down the terrain, creating patios and gardens in between. From the other side of the valley the building shows as a collection of smaller volumes, fitting to the area. On the interior the rooms follow the natural inclination of the terrain, allowing the spaces to have a direct connection to the gardens and patios which have different levels of privacy, solar exposure, and shade. The two houses have a shared pool surrounded by lush vegetation, giving maximum privacy towards the terraces. Each house has a private exterior bathtub. The materials chosen are mostly traditional, natural materials like wooden floors, exposed stone facades for the renovated storages and terraces finished with “calçada portuguesa”, a traditional-style pavement using small basalt stones.

Monte das Lages is a beautiful rural property, composed of two, fully independent terraced houses, that can be rented individually or as a whole. oth houses have free wi-fi and access to the outdoor swimming pool. Monte das Lages was acquired by the current owner in 1995 and only had two ruins blocks. In one of these blocks there was a wood oven with the date 1860 inscribed on the wall. It is estimated that the construction dates from that time. The houses were recovered, a total of three, each with 2 bedrooms and two bathrooms, and it was the home of the owners while the project for the big house was being carried out. The Casa dos Arcos and Casa do Pátio have been repaired and rehabilitated since 1997.

At the time there was only a portion of cork oaks in the farthest zone of the estate. Later, in 2001, 30 hectares of vines and another 100 hectares of cork oaks were planted. A small dam was built to capture water and irrigate the vineyard. In 2005 the owner acquired the adjacent Monte - Monte do Zambujal - and also a herd with about 200 heads.

In addition, about 90 hectares of hay are sown to feed the cows. Despite agricultural subsidies, Monte das Lages is not self-sufficient and so the idea arose, and since the houses in Arcos and Pátio were available, to license them for Local Accommodation. Improvement works were carried out, some items were purchased to modernize and focus on comfort and in February 2023 it was opened to guests. Monte das Lages also has an iconic swimming pool for guests to enjoy with fresh water and very pleasant shaded areas.

PANORAMIC DOMES These state-of-the-art domes have all the comforts of any other house with the extra of unusual architecture: a white dome protects the whole family. The children stay in a mezzanine with two raised beds and experience the joy of having a private second floor. Beneath this mezzanine, the bathroom and kitchenette are concealed, resulting in a particularly elegant double bedroom without distractions from the main thing: the view that rises right in front of the bed. From the valley to the sea, all you need to do is open the doors of the balcony (25 m2) to feel all the aromas wafting in through the dome.
