1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I feel I’ve definitely developed my presentation and finishing skills, in previous modules my finishing skills haven’t quite been up to par and I’ve struggled to keep interested in a brief, often hard work didn’t really show because the presentaiton at the end was poor. Over time I’ve learnt preparation and presentation is key and it cane take your work to another level and I feel I’m beginning to make strides in this area, especially with the What is Good element of the module. I also feel I’ve really come a long way with my time management and objective completion skills, I’m beginning to tackle my to-do lists and generally feel much more at ease with the course, having better time-management allows me to enjoy the course more and produce stronger, more considered work.

1. What approaches to / methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I feel sometimes I pick things up slowly, especially in terms of presentation and small details which take work a long way, one area I’ve tried to improve in to create an overall brand and to make the product seem like a viable real-world possibility and I feel my what is good and Studio Brief 3, exhibition poster briefs have been successful in this manner. I used real-world props and products such as ticket reels, lanyards, staff cards, paintbrushes etc, little things I bought from a shop, I realised design isn’t about making everything and anything, there’s nothing wrong with buying a few bits too, it’s about selling a brand and an experience when it comes to presentation. I feel I’ve adopted more of a hands-on approach to design, in the past I spent too long thinking and mulling over work, now I spend less time drawing and more time designing and trying things out. Everyone works in a different way and I’m not a strong drawer of thumbnails and accurate drawings but in my mind I can visualise exactly how I want it to look and I feel this is the best way to work for me, spending too long thinking about a brief or working on a brief too long makes me lose interest and focus, harming the end product.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I feel one of the main strengths of my work, especially in practical terms with What is good and Studio Brief 3 is type and layout and overall visual impact, I’m quite pleased with how it’s turned out and for one of the first times I’ve reached and fulfilled the concept to it’s potential. I also feel my design process and logging of the process is clear and the product is functional and interesting. Moving forward I want to employ the same streamlined and logical design approach, I know how I work and I learn and pick up things slowly, I find it difficult to change old habits but I’m now confident small strides are being made, especially in terms of process and thought process - one of my weak points in the past. This gives me confidence moving forward. I feel my type and layout has come along in strides and it’s reassured me that I can also design in a more traditional and mathematical sense, I’ve become fascinated and hugely engrossed in this art of design and want to carry it forward. Phil’s type and grid sessions have been undeniably useful in giving me some very useful pointers, for the first time I paid attention to point size, hierarchy and even leading in relation to the grid - something I’ve never done before and it’s given me key skills moving forward. I’ve learnt preparation of layout pays off. THis is one of the reasons i really enjoyed working on the Concertina booklet mini-brief.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and have/will you capitalise on them?

I feel I still need to think more outside of the box when it comes to products and be more ambitious, a lot of it comes down to my own personal tastes and ambitions within design which lie within print and I simply love making books, it’s almost like telling a story and I’m always excited and naturally drawn towards it but I feel there’s room to be more adventurous and to be interested in and produce work in less expected topics. I basically need to broaden my horizons more I feel, especialy in terms of research and product ranges. I feel I still need to put work in when it comes to concepts, I often make projects and concepts more complicated than they need to be and also give myself too much work when less products could maybe be more efficient and easier to communicate. I feel Studio Brief 3 as a solution to a problem is one of my most effective of the year but it’s only a quick turnaround poster, but with a strong and clear concept and it made me realise this is the way forward, it only makes life easier for me, and the work, hopefully stronger.

5.Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1 _ Next time around I plan on planning my work in a more focused way so if I ever lose focus, like I did with What Is Good for a brief period, which lead to abandonment of work - I can refer back to a list of a concept presentation to get me back on track. 2 _ I plan on thinking more ambitiously for my product range, I’m interested in print and I feel my strengths lie in layout and editorial but growing as a designer is about testing yourself in more ways than one and this is what I plan to do. 3 _ I plan on working more collaboratively. I’m getting stronger at working collaboratively and starting to see the benefits, it’s an advantage not a hinderance like it sometimes seemed at Level 04. Ttwice the amount of ideas, twice the amount of work and twice as strong work possibly (hopefully). 4 _ I will work more conceptually with clear concepts outlined from the start serving as a constant reminder to not get side-tracked and to produce much stronger and easier to understand work, especially for a pitch or proposal where concepts are very important and need to be clear. 5 _ I will plan more time for obstacles and accidents which may occur unpredictably. Especially in regards to production and printing time, things always take longer than you think they will and having a few days to act as a buffer are essential and help to re-assess work and improve a little more. 06
